impact advancing health care

Campaign for Swedish donors ensure stability and growth It has been nearly five months since I joined the Swedish family, and each week I am more proud and honored to be a part of this great health system. Every day, Swedish provides the people who come to us for care with access to world-class facilities, to cutting-edge technologies and treatments and, most importantly, to the thousands of skilled and compassionate caregivers who make Swedish such a priceless resource for our community. This special Campaign Achievement issue of IMPACT magazine describes how the remarkable care available at Swedish has been enhanced by the support we received from you, our donors, during the recently completed, seven-year Campaign for Swedish. All of us who work here are both gratified and inspired by the individuals, private foundations and corporate donors whose support enabled us to not just achieve, but to far surpass our original $100 million fundraising goal by more than $30 million. As you read the stories in these pages, I hope you get a sense of the critical and lasting impact your generosity has had, and will continue to have, on the health and well-being of the many communities Swedish serves across Western Washington. Thanks to you, we have made important improvements to the care we are able to offer patients in all service areas, from cancer to the neurosciences, to women and infants and beyond. The Campaign for Swedish has positioned Swedish for stability and growth in support of the patients and communities we serve. To all of you, thank you for your support. I look forward to the exciting next chapter in the proud story of Swedish.

The Campaign for Swedish

The successful, system-wide fundraising initiative launched on January 1, 2007, can be characterized by a series of numbers: 7 years, the Campaign’s length. $100 million, its original goal — the most ambitious in Swedish’s history. $130 million, the amount of money the Campaign had raised by its conclusion on December 31, 2013. 61,000, the number of people who contributed. 2,000,000, the approximate number of patients these funds have helped. But, of course, numbers don’t tell the whole story — or stories, as the case may be. Because every Swedish patient has a unique story that together combine to tell another, farther-reaching one — the story of a stronger health-delivery system that is able to offer better treatment options and more access to advanced research and clinical trials than it did seven years ago, thanks to the generosity of community members. This latest chapter of Swedish’s history has roots that, like the rest of the medical center, date to 1910, when ten Swedish-born physicians, led by Dr. Nils Johanson, each contributed $1,000 to start Swedish Hospital. Dr. Johanson and his colleagues would undoubtedly have been proud to watch their humble hospital, which began with just 24 beds, grow into the largest nonprofit healthcare provider in the greater Seattle area, as well as to see it continually strive to provide better care to the communities it serves. On the following pages, you’ll read the stories of several Swedish patients and learn about how the Campaign has helped provide them with enhanced care and improved health — and, equally as important, a greater sense of hope. It’s a story we can all be proud of.

from the FOUNDATION

It is a real pleasure for me to write this letter and look back on milestones and achievements accomplished throughout the Campaign. Undoubtedly, the most memorable moment of 2013 occurred on the year’s last day, which marked the official completion of our seven-year Campaign for Swedish. As most of you know, we reached our initial $100 million goal for the Campaign late 2012, more than 17 months ahead of its scheduled completion. Throughout 2013, during the Campaign’s “Homestretch” phase, our donors and supporters continued their remarkable efforts to build a stronger Swedish to benefit patients and families in the community. I am proud to report that by the end of the year, we had reached a final total of over $130 million raised through The Campaign for Swedish, including a capstone gift of $10.1 million from the Robert and Jean Reid Family Foundation. In 2013 alone, we received over $15.5 million in new gifts and pledges from our community. These gifts included over $3.8 million from planned giving donors who made bequests or life income gifts; a 62-percent increase, from 66 to 107, in Founders Circle donors who make gifts of more than $10,000 annually; over $3 million in corporate gifts; and $166,000 in contributions from 661 Swedish employees. All of us at Swedish are inspired and humbled by the record-setting outpouring of philanthropic support from the community that made The Campaign for Swedish a success. Each of you — the generous donors whose names appear on the following pages — was a part of that success. Funds raised during the Campaign built or expanded an impressive list of facilities and programs throughout Swedish, an amazing accomplishment considering the serious national and local economic challenges that coincided with the Campaign. This list includes the True Family Women’s Cancer Center, the Gossman Center for Advanced Healthcare Simulation, the Swedish MS Center, the Ben and Catherine Ivy Center for Advanced Brain Tumor Treatment, the Comprehensive Heart Failure Center, and the Lytle Center for Pregnancy & Newborns, to name just a few. For me, each item on that list brings back fond memories of hard work, enthusiasm and generosity from our supporters. On the preceding pages you found stories that highlight the impact of The Campaign for Swedish on some individual patients and caregivers in this special Campaign Achievement issue of IMPACT. I hope these stories will give you a sense of how important your generosity has been to patients and families who you will probably never meet. “Help Change a Life” was the tagline and spirit of our Campaign, and together we have changed more than two million lives. Speaking for everyone at Swedish, thank you for all you have done during the last seven years. Your generosity will sustain this great institution as a vital, patient-centered resource for our region in the decades ahead. We cannot thank each of you personally, but please know that our gratitude is deep and heartfelt. We hope that it becomes a part of the environment you experience whenever you or a family member comes here for care. Sincerely,

Don Theophilus President, Swedish Medical Center Foundation and Chief Development Officer for Swedish

Record attendance ensures success for Rivkin Center Family & Friends Auction The Marsha Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer Research held its 12th annual auction and celebration on November 9, 2013 at the Bellevue Hyatt Regency. A record-setting 670 guests registered for the event, and attendees contributed more than $1.1 million in support of ovarian cancer research. The Family & Friends Auction was chaired by Joyce Cutler and Eric Morse, both long-time friends of Joe White. Joe and his family started the LorLor & Mom Courage 4 Life Golf Tournament. As it and the Fisher family’s event — which was led by patriarch Eddie Fisher — grew, the two families joined forces to create the largest ovarian cancer fundraising event in the region.

Saul Rivkin, M.D.,Babs Fisher Valor Award honoree, with his wife Joyce and grandson Ezra Cohanim.

Two important awards are made annually that celebrate the founding families: The Courage for Life Award recognizes those who, in the face of ovarian cancer, demonstrate a profound passion for life, a generosity to others, and an important contribution to the efforts of the organization. The 2013 award went to survivor Kim Roth, a generous advocate and champion for ovarian cancer patients everywhere. The Babs Fisher Valor Award recognizes those who provide outstanding leadership in increasing awareness of ovarian cancer, inspire philanthropic advocacy, and help to further the mission of the Rivkin Center. In this, the second year of presentation, the Fisher family celebrated Dr. Saul Rivkin for his tireless efforts to fund research to find a cure. Challenge grants totaling $300,000, from the Wanda Jankelson Foundation for Health Care and Research and in Memory of Lori Pape, combined to inspire attendees to raise their paddles in excess of $300,000. Proceeds from the auction benefit the Rivkin Center, which advances research in areas of treatment, early detection and the prevention of ovarian cancer. The Rivkin Center also provides the Northwest’s only Ovarian Cancer Early Detection Screening Program for women at high risk for the disease. Special thanks to the events committee and our generous sponsors for supporting the event. Donors fund neonatal infant touch and massage training for Swedish staff Thanks to our donors, more than 100 Swedish nurses, lactation consultants, pediatric occupational therapists and respiratory therapists from all five campuses recently participated in a special Infant Development training program. The two-day, hands-on course focused on how caregivers can better support the healthy development of premature infants through positioning, handling and environment. Because premature infants have very special needs and their nervous systems are still developing, there is a potential for overstimulation every time a baby is handled, moved, bathed, or interacted with. Swedish is committed to equipping caregivers and parents with the knowledge and skills needed to minimize stimulation and provide positive touch for these fragile infants. “Our goal is to reduce as much stress as possible and provide a nurturing environment for the babies while they are here so their bodies can focus on growing and developing.” said Ann Blakeslee, an RN with the program. Swaddling a baby during bathing was one technique covered in the course, as well as infant massage. In addition, kangaroo care, or “skin-to-skin” cuddling with a parent, was also reinforced. Participants were able to practice using the newest positioning aids for stabilizing and swaddling infants, which help babies feel secure and safe when they’re not being held. But they can be costly. “This hands-on training is much more beneficial than just listening to or watching someone else. We want to make sure we provide the best and most supportive environment for these babies, and we are so thankful to Swedish donors for funding this program.” Swedish cares for more than 800 premature infants per year across our five campuses. To learn about more opportunities to support our Neonatal Infant Care Unit program at Swedish, please contact Jennifer Blume at (206) 386-3348 or jennifer.blume@swedish.org.

Hedgehog Toffee creates hope through sweets For one couple, chocolate has truly been a life-saver. Kendra and Trevor Wilds began dating in 2011. That same year, Trevor was diagnosed with Adult T-Cell Lymphoma. Despite the difficult news, they became engaged and began planning their wedding as Trevor started treatment, which included eight aggressive cycles of chemotherapy. It was an intense physical, emotional and spiritual journey for the young couple, but they were confident they were in great hands at the Swedish Cancer Institute. “Going through cancer is terrible, there’s no way around it, but the personal kindness, compassion and skill of caregivers at Swedish made the process more manageable,” says Trevor. For their wedding, Trevor’s mom Barb hand-made English toffee as favors. Guests began hoarding favors as they realized how good the toffee was! For years, Barb has supported local causes with the sale of her delectable treats to her community. Continuing this legacy of generosity, the couple decided to transform Trevor’s diagnosis into something positive. Together with Barb they founded Hedgehog Toffee with plans to help others in need. “Hedgehog Toffee is far more than a candy company,” the now cancer-free Trevor explains. “Through the charitable contributions made possible through sales, we hope to touch many lives and help other cancer patients access the high-quality care we received.” Proceeds from sales support the Cancer Patient Assistance Fund, which helps Swedish to ensure patients’ non-medical needs and expenses are supported during treatment. Adds Kendra, “Trevor’s spearheading of the business, motivated by the impact we can have, has helped to give him purpose and focus outside himself through the treatment and recovery process.” Hedgehog Toffee is available at Puget Sound-area Whole Foods Markets, Relish Fine Foods and Home Remedies, or online at www. hedgehogtoffee.com.

Honor Your Caregiver Each day at Swedish, we offer hope and healing through world-class medicine — and it all starts with skilled and dedicated caregivers willing to go the extra mile. The Honor Your Caregiver program provides our patients with an opportunity to celebrate the exemplary care they receive by making a gift in honor of their caregiver. Caregivers will be recognized among their peers for their important role in making our patients’ experiences better. All donations also help to enhance the outstanding level of care our community has come to expect. To honor your Swedish caregiver, please visit www.swedishtributegifts.org. For more information, please contact Breanna Weeks, manager of annual giving, at (206) 386-6796 or breanna.weeks@swedish.org. w w w. s w e d i s h f o u n d a t i o n . o r g

hysicians never want to reach a point where they are out of viable treatment options for a patient. For many people who are diagnosed with cancer and treated at Swedish Cancer Institute (SCI), running out of treatment options won’t occur because they were diagnosed in the earliest stages of their disease or had a good initial response to their treatment. There are, however, some cancers for which we don’t yet have optimal treatment options, just as there are patients with late-stage or recurring dis-

ease for whom standard courses of therapy are not, or are no longer, viable. For these patients and families, clinical trials can offer hope and time. Over the coming years, SCI will roll out a Personalized Medicine Program, where clinical trial therapies will increasingly be able to target individual patients based on an improved understanding of molecular biology and molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis. Physicians can use this new knowledge to find the personal “molecular fingerprint” of both

The research division at the Swedish Cancer Institute operates under two guiding principles: giving cancer patients more choices for treatment and bringing science to the bedside. Clinical trials are conducted in three phases: Phase I trials typically evaluate how a new drug should be given, how often, and at what dosage. Phase I trials generally are appropriate for patients with a specific widespread disease that has not responded to standard therapies and involve a small number of participants. Phase II trials test how effective a new drug is against a particular cancer. Phase III trials question whether or not a new treatment works better than the standard treatment. Today, with so many types of treatment combinations being tested, patients with “common” cancers also participate in Phase II or III clinical trials as part of their initial treatment. Presents
