th 24 ANNUAL ARKANSAS SPORTSHOW By Kent Bridger, 2008 Arkansas Sportshow Chairman The 24th annual Arkansas Sportshow is just around the corner. The show will take place on February 1-3 at the Arkansas State University Convocation Center in Jonesboro. This year’s show has a brand new line up of attractions, seminars and vendors. New to this year’s show will be an autograph session with former NASCAR great, Geoff Bodine. Come meet Geoff and ask the former Daytona 500 champion what it feels like to be in the winners circle. The second annual regional turkey calling contest is back by popular demand. This is a National Wild Turkey Federation sanctioned qualifying contest for the 2009 Wild Turkey Grand National Calling Championship. Troy Cox from Mizmo Bait Company will be demonstrating successful hard bait and soft bait presentation skills in the fish tank. Troy has extensive tournament experience on many local lakes so bring your questions with you to ask the experts how to catch “the big one”! In addition, we will conduct a 3D pop up Archery Tournament during the show. The tournament is open to the public and will be identical to the professional tournaments as seen on television. Phyllis Speer from the Arkansas Game and Fish will be on hand
to discuss her favorite outdoor recipes. Children of all ages will be entertained in the Kid’s Corner. Happy Times Petting Zoo along with the Crowley’s Ridge Nature Center will provide fun activities for the children. We are also proud to have the 875th rock climbing wall in the Kid’s Corner. Kids will once again have the chance to win an iPod shuffle by participating in a coloring contest. We will also have the World’s Greatest Trout Tank stocked to the brim with Rainbow and Golden Trout. If that isn’t enough, we will have the Mid South Big Buck Extravaganza where the largest deer taken in the region are brought to the Convocation Center and judged by an offi-
Jerry Blackshear 623 W. Kingshighway • Paragould, AR 72450 • 870-236-1455
cial Boone and Crockett scorer to see who will win the title. Vendors will have everything from campers and ATVs to the latest outdoor gizmo’s and paintball guns. We have something for everyone in the family whether you are an outdoor enthusiast or not. The Arkansas Sportshow is a service project and fundraiser of the Rotary Club of Jonesboro. For the past 23 years this show has been produced, promoted, staffed and managed by members of the Jonesboro Rotary Club and the Interact Clubs from Jonesboro, Nettleton, Westside and Valley View. All proceeds from this event go back into Jonesboro and Rotary International projects. A few of these projects include Rotary Centennial Park at Craighead Forrest, Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts and Interact Scholarships on the local level and Polio Eradication on the international level. Please come out and enjoy the Arkansas Sportshow and know that you are helping to support many worthy causes in our community. For more information visit our website at www.arsportshow.com.

Arkansas Sportshow Regional Turkey Calling Championship Sadler McGraw made the trek from Alabama to Jonesboro to win the first ever Arkansas Sportshow Regional Turkey Calling Championship in both Senior Open and Friction divisions. The Rotary Club of Jonesboro is sponsoring the second annual “Arkansas Sportshow Regional Turkey Calling Championship” on February 2nd at 12:30pm. The contest will be held in the auditorium of the Arkansas State University Convocation Center in conjunction with the Arkansas Sportshow. This is a NWTF sanctioned qualifying contest for the 2009 Wild Turkey Bourbon/ NWTF Grand National Calling Championship. We have had a great response from contestant inquiring about our contest. This contest is the first qualifying contest in our area for the 2009 Wild Turkey Bourbon/ NWTF Grand National Calling Championship and it is just before the 2008 Wild Turkey Bourbon/ NWTF Grand National Call-
ing Championship. We are going to see a lot of high quality contestants in the Senior Open Division that will be here to sharpen their skills before the Grand National event to be held on February 21, 2009 in Atlanta, GA. We have had inquiries from contestants from all over Arkansas as well as Colorado, Missouri, and Alabama. This contest is also a great opportunity for people that have never competed before to test their skills in the Jakes or Amateur division and win some great prizes. The contest will have five divisions: Jakes, Amateur, Owl Hooting, Friction, and Senior Open. The Jakes division is open to all contestants that are 15 years old and under. Prizes and trophies will be awarded to the top three contestants. The Amateur division is open to anyone who has not previously won or placed in turkey calling contest. Prizes and trophies will also be given to the top three finishers. The
Owl Hooting division is open to anyone that would like to enter. Cash and prizes will be given to the top three finishers with first place receiving 50% of the entry fees in this category. The Friction division is open to anyone that would like to enter. Cash and prizes will be given to the top three finishers with first place receiving 50% of the entry fees in this category. If the winner of the friction category is 21 years of age by February 21, 2009 or older and we have 10 or more contestants in the category, then you are qualified to compete in the 2009 Wild Turkey Bourbon/ NWTF Grand National Calling Championship. The Senior Open is open to anyone who is 21 years old (by February 21, 2009). Cash and trophies will be awarded to the top five finishers. The prize money is $1250 for first, $750 for second, $400 for third, $300 for forth, and $200 for fifth. The winner will be qualified to enter the 2009 Wild Turkey Bourbon/
NWTF Grand National Calling Championship. For more information or to pre-register, go to www.arsportshow. com <http://www.arsportshow.com> or call Marvin Day at (870) 932 1306 (work). Whether you’re a seasoned turkey caller or someone that likes to watch a great contest, come on out to the Convocation Center on Saturday, Feb. 2nd at 12:30pm and experience turkey calling at it’s finest.

Join Phyllis Speer on the main floor this year at the Arkansas Sportshow! "Cooking with Phyllis" is the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission's way of sharing the skills of their very own Phyllis Speer with the public. Several years ago Phyllis Speer and John Philpot teamed up to film Arkansas Outdoors, an AETN television series that shares the beauty of Arkansas and the many activities available to sportsmen, conservationists and others who just enjoy the outdoors. Arkansas Outdoors airs each Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. on AETN. Take time to check out this 30-minute, fun-filled
The Archery Challenge has been one of the most popular attractions at The AR Sportshow in year’s past and this year will be no exception. With the growing popularity of archery and bowhunting, this real life hunting simulation continues to be not only a participant favorite, but a crowd favorite. The Archery Challenge matches archery skills from some of the best shooters in a three state area and is open to the public. New this year, all shooters will receive a free round! the other shooters in your division. There will be over $2500 in prizes to be given away to the top shooters. The Archery Challenge is sponsored this year by The Sun and conducted by Team Bowmasters of Arkansas. Team Bowmasters and Jerry Bowles is known throughout the country and produces many of the 3-D archery shoots that you see on television. Their goal is to provide a high quality, competitive shooting challenge. A free youth archery clinic will be held this year beginning at 9:00a. m. on Saturday morning. Jerry Bowles will conduct a clinic and will provide a brief shooting lesson along with many of the reasons why today’s youth should be involved in archery. Bows will be provided to those who don’t own a bow, all at no cost to the shooter. Participation is limited so come early to reserve your space. Tell your friends about the Archery Challenge and come prepared to test your skills in a real life, nerve testing situation. With $2500 in prizes, a free round of shooting, and a free youth archery clinic, it’s easy to see why the Arkansas Sportshow and the Archery Challenge continues to be a favorite among attendees.

Troy Cox will be at the AGFC fish tank. What is Rotary all about?
It’s about lending a hand to those who need it! It’s about Rotarians providing water and shelter for hundreds of Afghan refugees who fled from the conflict and instability in their country to neighboring Pakistan. It’s about Rotarians giving assistance to the many families who lost their homes in the recent California fires. It’s about Rotarians helping hundreds of families after Hurricane Mitch hit Central America. It’s about Rotarians helping when a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Kobe, Japan, killing 6,279 and destroying 192,706 homes. It’s about Rotarians who have provided relief in dozens of countries throughout the world for the people who have fallen victim to nature’s wrath or man made disasters. It’s about Rotarians who clothe the naked, feed the poor, provide shelter to the homeless, and bring relief to the sick, regardless of their nationality, political boundary, religion or culture. It’s about Rotarians who believe and practice in “Service Above Self”.
It’s About World Peace Ambassadorial Scholarships These scholarships foster world understanding and good will by giving people opportunities to study in another country. More than 30,000 young men and women from 69 nations have studied abroad in 64 countries through the efforts of Rotary.
Group Study Exchanges These provide unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunities for young business and professional men and women between the ages of 25 and 40 and in the early years of their professional lives. The program has provided thousands of people with travel grants for exchange visits between paired areas in different countries.
The first class of 70 Rotary Peace Scholars began their studies at the seven Rotary Centers for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution. These seven centers, located at prestigious universities throughout the world, will support a new generation of peacemakers. This program is indeed a bold and ambitious commitment to the cause of world peace. By educating 70 individuals each year in peace negotiation, conflict resolution, and diplomacy, Rotary will address in a very real way the importance for individuals and groups to better understand one another, find common ground, forego violence, and focus on the pressing needs of the world. University Teacher Grants Rotary grants for University Teachers provide funds to higher education faculty to travel abroad to teach at colleges and universities in developing countries. The program is intended to build international understanding and foster development while strengthening higher education in low-income countries. The program also aims to establish ties between higher education institutions, leading to the exchange of ideas and information across the globe. It’s About Humanitarian Needs of the Children of the World Every minute 23 more children die from hunger and preventable disease. Every hour, scores of children are orphaned by the scourge of HIV/AIDS. Every day, millions of children do not go to school because they lack access to education. Every month children’s lives are disrupted by war and civil conflict. Every year that the problems faced by our most vulnerable population - our children - are not solved, represents another generation that will be all too familiar with war, poverty and despair. In 2002, Rotarians implemented nearly 1,600 local projects with a combined $20 million budget to
