Alan Russell, UK sales director, Louis de Poortere, says: “We’re delighted that Christian Fischbacher has chosen our expertise to realise its Prêt-à-Porter Carpet Collection. Premier pitch on the Ball Executives at a Premier League football club are now enjoying their very own indoor patch of turf, thanks to the strength of F. Ball and Co. Ltd.’s Styccobond F3 adhesive for textile floorcoverings, which has been used to create a striking grass wall-effect focal point in their offices. The project, part of an extensive refurbishment of a 1000m2 office area, sees the wall ‘pitch’ taking pride of place in the club’s business support departments, including fans’ membership and ticket services. Additionally, carpet tiles and luxury vinyl tiles were also used to make a bright, open-plan working environment for the staff. To create the grass wall feature, contractors PMH Flooring applied Styccobond F3 adhesive to plywood panels affixed to an internal wall and placed artificial grass strips vertically, in a similar fashion to putting up wallpaper. Once in position, the ‘grass’ was pinned with nails as the adhesive dried to secure the fixture. Styccobond F3 was recommended for its high initial wet grab and early build-up of strength, meaning it was quickly able to adhere the artificial grass to the wall before drying in just 20 minutes. On the floor, a mixture of grey Milliken Clerkenwell Triangular Path and Naturally Drawn Watercolour Lesson carpet tiles were positioned randomly to create a unique installation in the open-plan area, with light green versions adding a pop of colour inside the seven meeting rooms. Complementing the ‘grass’ feature wall, Forbo Allura wood LVT planks were installed in a chevron formation, also known as ‘Hungarian herringbone’, to complete a natural-looking breakout meeting place. Speaking of the unique installation, Glenn Hitchin at PMH Flooring, said: “The club wanted something with the ‘wow factor’ for their staff, so we captured the spirit of the beautiful game by giving them their own piece of pitch. We were grateful for the help of F. Ball’s expert Technical Services team, who advised on how to approach the project.” T 01538 361 633

Leading in laminate water-resistant tech Marking a revolution in the laminate flooring industry, BerryAlloc first introduced its water-resistant Hydro+ technology to the market in 2008. Some 13 years on and Hydro+ is still regarded as the leading water-resistant laminate technology available. Hydro+ uses precision engineering and a hydrophobic varnish that’s applied to the edges of the plank to form a seal that prevents moisture reaching the water-repellent HDF core. The result is a floor that can hold off standing water for up to 24 hours, plenty of time to mop away excess spills. Hydro+ is available on the Ocean+ laminate collection that features impressively lifelike wood, and stone designs. From elegant oaks to rustic woods full of knots and cracks, there’s 30 original looks to suit any interior, including a stylish stone design and the unique Retro Chic tile to round things off beautifully. Wood effects come in a range of natural structures to enhance the surface of the floor. The highlight is the deep wood structure, an ultra-deep embossed texture and super-matt finish that brings the knots and cracks of grains to life. The collection is made of four different specifications: Ocean 8 V4, Ocean 8 XL, Ocean 12 V4 and Ocean 12 XL so that it can be enjoyed in all sizes of room and in both homes and businesses. Despite its 100% water-resistance, maintaining Ocean+ is no different than any other BerryAlloc laminate. A tough and highly scratch-resistant surface fights off the signs of daily life. FLOORINGNEWS Lab’s flawless flooring Stopgap subfloor preparation products from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. and the company’s Styccobond F44 acrylic adhesive have been used to create a laboratory-standard flooring finish at a new facility for international laboratories operator Tentamus Group, at Pride Park in Derbyshire. Contractors from JDF Flooring used F. Ball’s dual-purpose Stopgap Fill and Prime and Stopgap 1200 Pro levelling compound to prepare 1,500m² of metal raised access panels over two floors before installing vinyl sheet safety flooring throughout. The upper floor was partitioned to create multiple laboratories. Stopgap Fill and Prime is a cement-based primer with a thixotropic consistency, meaning it is easily applied by hand but sets to a gel-like consistency on standing, allowing it to fill gaps at joints between panels, preventing depressions resulting from a subsequently-applied levelling compound sinking into them while setting. Once the primer had cured, F. Ball’s Stopgap 1200 Pro levelling compound was applied to create a perfectly smooth base for the installation of floorcoverings. The product is a fast-setting, fast-drying, two-component levelling compound for preparing sound internal subfloors. Its protein-free formulation makes it suitable for use in clinical and biologically sensitive areas, such as hospitals, laboratories and clean rooms. It can also be used over old adhesive residues, without the need to prime subfloors beforehand. Contractors then used F. Ball’s Styccobond F44 acrylic adhesive to install Polyflor Polysafe Standard PUR heavy-duty vinyl safety flooring. Styccobond F44 is a solvent-free, acrylic emulsion adhesive, which provides high bond strength, strong initial tack and a long open time. It is protected against biodegradation and suitable for securing a wide-range of vinyl sheet and tile floorcoverings, rubber floorcoverings and some PVC or polyurethane-backed textile floorcoverings. Finally, Quantum PVC capping and coving was installed at the junctions between the floorcoverings and walls to produce a neat finish and allow for easy cleaning. T 01538 361 633

Sustainable style Altro Ensemble modular flooring has been used throughout a new development of 21 modern, sustainable holiday homes; part of a new ‘eco’ hotel complex in Thuringia, Germany. The chalet-style, solid wood accommodation has been built with high-quality natural materials, and sustainably equipped as part of an ecological construction project. The build, including the interior design, required sustainable materials, sourced from local companies, helping to reduce the hotel’s carbon footprint by keeping delivery miles low. This local supply chain also helped to contribute to the environmental balance of the hotel’s construction. Flooring company, Alexander Oertel, recommended Altro Ensemble modular flooring for the interior floors due to Altro’s membership of the German Sustainable Building Council (DNGB). Other contributing factors included Altro’s policy of sourcing raw materials locally and these products being manufactured at the company’s nearby German site in Dessau. “It was important to us that we found a floor that fits our sustainability concept and at the same time looks stylish and modern,” explains Katrin Schlottke of Bio-Seehotels. Altro Ensemble has up to 15dB impact sound reduction with added comfort underfoot, making it perfect for front of house areas in hotels including foyers and reception areas, restaurant and café dining areas, retail, offices, and student accommodation – any environment where design is key. With four modular sizes, you can mix and match to create unique patterns utilising colour and design. It combines with Altro Whiterock wall designs for a unique interior statement. Domotex aims to inspire Domotex 2022 opens its doors in Hannover from 13 to 16 January with numerous innovations. The organisers used the pandemic timeout to adapt the world’s leading trade show for carpets and floor coverings to changing market conditions and develop it strategically. The most important aspect is the so-called 2-world-concept with the division of the trade show structure into the two labels ‘Carpets & Rugs’ for carpets and mats (Halls 2-7) and ‘Floor & Wall’ for floor coverings and wall products for the parquet, carpet and resilient LVT segments (Halls 11-13). In addition, many new formats await exhibitors and visitors alike in the halls. “There will be lots of new elements to discover at our next Domotex. We have used the last year intensively to develop new participation opportunities for companies and to create a new brand experience for visitors,” says Sonia Wedell-Castellano, Global Director of Domotex. The upcoming Domotex will offer new formats and new places to be in all product areas. These include the new Mood Spaces, six booths designed by interior designers that represent current trends and express the interaction between floors and walls. Also new on board are the Material Selections, which provide an overview of the most important application and trend topics for architects, interior designers and contractors, but also for trade and industry partners. The Material Selections for wall and floor coverings offer orientation and inspiration. The Retailers’ Lounge is the new meeting place for retailers in which to enjoy the exchange among experts on equal terms. It is also a source of inspiration for retail visitors, as the lounge will be directly integrated into the Mood Spaces. www.domotex.de

FLOORINGBUSINESSNEWS Carpet imports double to catch up

Flooring surge accelerates to 22%

Surging imports from Belgium and Dutch carpet manufacturers are starting to catch up on lost turnover in the first half of 2021 and now exceeding 2019 levels.

The sales surge in flooring is outperforming UK retail sales by a remarkable 22% as pent-up demand is sustained despite a slowdown in the furnishing sector generally.

Carpet imports doubled in June according to figures from HM Revenue & Custom analysed by The Furnishing Report. The total value of imports for the first six months of 2021 was £467.8 million, a 58% increase on 2020 figures and 4% up on 2019.

Analysis of ONS retail data by The Stocklists shows floorcovering sales grew 22.1% between May and June 2021, following growth in April to May of 5.2%. This compares with a 17% decline in furniture sales between May and June and a 10.9% fall in household goods for the same period. Other data from the Bank of England suggests furniture stores are being held back by logistical issues that have reduced the availability of products to meet demand.

Belgium and the Netherlands – the largest two importer for British carpet buyers were up 63% and 50% respectively in the first half of 2021. However, Belgian imports still remain below first half 2019 levels. But Turkey and India enjoyed even bigger gains, taking advantage of European shortfalls, with Turkey up 111% and India up 76%.

Likewise raises £10m on London trading launch Likewise Group plc, the fast growing UK floor coverings distributor, has raised £10m for future growth as its shares started trading on the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange on August 18. The share placing to raise £10m at a price of 25p per share makes the market capitalisation of Likewise approximately £48m. Chief Executive of Likewise, Tony Brewer, said: “Likewise is delighted to be listed on AIM in order to create access to capital and accelerate our growth aspirations. We would like to thank all our advisers and we very much appreciate the endeavours of our excellent Management and Staff to establish a business in the last 3 years. Particular thanks to our Suppliers and Customers for their support in our brief history to date and look forward to continue developing that relationship to our mutual benefit in the future.”

ScS orders up 23% in “strong trading” Leading flooring and furniture retailer ScS says orders were up 24% in June and July after a strong performance in postlockdown sales. In its full year trading update to shareholders for the 12 months ended July 31, 2021, the plc said: “The current and prior year have been impacted by regional and national store closures across the UK as a result of COVID-19. Encouragingly, when our stores have been open, performance has been strong, with the final seven weeks of the [financial] year seeing like-for-like orders growth of 23.7% when compared to 2019.

“Encouragingly, when our stores have been open, performance has been strong with the final seven weeks of the [financial] year seeing like-for-like orders growth of 23.7% when compared to 2019. ” “The same period in the prior year benefited from strong pent up demand following the re-opening of our stores in May 2020 after the first national lockdown,” it said. Despite ScS stores being closed for 17 weeks in the last financial year, it says the full year like-for-like order intake was down only 6.5% compared to 2019. The Board’s statement added: “The Board is encouraged by the strong trading performance since reopening and therefore believes that the Group is in a strong position as we enter the new financial year.

“Floorcovering sales grew 22.1% compares with a 17% decline in furniture sales between May and June and a 10.9% fall in household goods for the same period.” The ONS data overall reports that UK retail sales were up just 0.5% between May and June with the growth coming from increased food sales. Non-food stores reported a fall of 1.7% in sales volumes. Anecdotal evidence from the floorcovering industry suggests that July and August sales have slowed a little with the warmer weather but the sector’s performance since stores re-opened in April means many retailers continue to have full order books.

Salesmark adds to Unilin growth Unilin Flooring is to purchase Salesmark Ltd, the UK regional distributor, to further its strategic growth ambitions – allowing Unilin to offer a greatly enhanced level of service to customers across England and Wales. It will enhance Unilin’s existing distribution model by more than doubling the current fleet of delivery vehicles and adding additional warehouse capacity, adding to Unilin Flooring’s operations in the UK where currently, through Unilin Distribution Ltd, they offer a wide and innovative range of flooring products.. In commenting on the acquisition, Nigel McManus, General Manager at Unilin Distribution said: “Unilin Distribution Ltd was the first distributor acquired by the Unilin Group back in 2009 and since then we have experienced impressive growth and high levels of customer satisfaction. The acquisition of Salesmark will greatly add to this growth by incorporating their excellent customer service model into our own.”

Flooring Superstore accelerates expansion Flooring Superstore is driving ahead with ambitious growth plans which could deliver 50 UK stores, adding to its high profile online presence. More than a dozen new stores have been opened since the retail unlocking in April with the two latest arrivals in Preston and Glasgow and outlets in Leicester and Southampton “coming soon” adding up to a current portfolio of around 40 sites. The group lays claim to offering the biggest selection of flooring in the UK and says it has “great ambitions for expansion”. Flooring Superstore and its co-brands DWF (Direct Wood Flooring) and Grass Direct are operated by Connection Flooring based in County Durham.

FLOORING FOCUS

Moving beyond the mainstream Man-made fibres are the mainstay of the UK flooring industry and an impressive commitment to fibre development has seen a steady improvement in appearance and performance alongside the familyfriendly cleanability that consumers love. Increasingly now there are several synthetic ranges that are moving beyond the mainstream with enhanced appeal, recognising that some consumers are less price sensitive this year as they unlock those unspent savings that haven’t been squandered on holidays and socialising! Given that these products are still highly price competitive, the extra quality gives retailers an opportunity for better margins while offering their customer added value.

homeowners a reassuring lifetime of stain-performance, but also a far better feel that’s akin to premium fibres such as polyamide or polyester,” she says. Through developments in technology, Abingdon has been able to create a polypropylene yarn that feels far softer without trading anything in terms of performance. “Using this new yarn in luxurious pile heights and pile weights, rather than engineering the product to hit a particular price-point, means we’re able to achieve a man-made carpet that delivers added-value, bringing a feeling of luxury that’s hugely accessible,” says Millie. Invictus Carpet, the award winning brand by Associated Weavers, has turned adding value to man-made carpets into an artform with sophisticated products backed up by class-leading instore merchandising. The brand’s message is: invincible comfort – stunningly rich texture – superior stain resistance and Associated Weavers are using a new generation of iVinci polypropylene yarn, for an extra bulky and comfortable look and feel. All are available in 3m, 4m and 5m widths. The all time Invictus favourites Orion and Sirius received an update to the colourbank, giving the range a modern look and making it ready for 2021 (and beyond) to meet customer needs.

Abingdon Flooring StainFree Aristocrat in Mercury

“The StainFree collection underlines our ability to deliver homes stain-resistant carpets that are among the best value on the market.” This approach is exemplified in the latest development from Abingdon Flooring, Stainfree Aristocat. “While the StainFree collection underlines our ability to deliver homes stain-resistant carpets that are among the best value on the market, we’re also focused on making sure that it offers the appealing benefits of manmade fibres in mid and upper tiers too,” says Millie Barlow, head of marketing, Abingdon Flooring. “StainFree Aristocat is a new carpet which demonstrates just how far man-made fibres have come in the last few years, not only offering 32

Shining stars! The culmination of the 2021 awards scheme to celebrate the ideas, imagination and innovation that drive forward the UK flooring industry.

The star achievers: 2021 winners announced After more than 100 top quality submissions and the first round of judging, the “stars” of the Flooring Innovation Awards have been announced. The judges selected the winners (shown right) across 10 categories for the distinction of the prestigious awards, covering all flooring types, design, accessories, installation products, environmental, marketing and technology. “This award scheme has become hugely popular since we launched it in 2018 but we did wonder how the industry would respond after everything that has gone on in the last year or so,” said organiser Bridgette Kelly. “But, needless to say, the industry rose to the challenge and the quality of entries was very high.” The National Flooring Innovation Awards are designed to be different to the usual ranked prizes given out across the industry and instead sets out to identify products and services that are genuinely new and exceptional in the sector. “The winners demonstrate exceptional initiative in making a difference in difficult times,” said awards judge David Spragg, of the scheme’s sponsors, The Stocklists magazine. “Product development has been held back of course but there is clearly no shortage of good ideas out there.”

FLOORINGNEWS Recofloor drives Fantasy success Named 2021 Brand Ambassador in the annual Recofloor Awards, Fantasy Flooring Ltd says the Recofloor brand and recycling waste vinyl flooring is a ‘huge part’ of their business that carries a lot of weight with larger building companies. Since joining Recofloor in 2015 as a drop-off site user, the Bristol-based flooring contractor’s commitment to collecting and segregating material for recycling has earned them a number of accolades. Their previous awards include 2015, 2017 and 2019 Drop-off Site User of the Year and Managing Director, Mark Purnell, securing the Recofloor Champion title in 2016 and 2018.

Great to be recognised South Wales-based Commercial Flooring Contractors Ltd won the 2021 Project of the Year award in the annual Recofloor Awards for their dedication to collecting waste vinyl flooring for recycling from temporary NHS Rainbow Hospitals - a 290-bed facility at Wales Rugby Union’s National Centre of Excellence in Cardiff and the Parc Y Scarlets Rugby Stadium in Llanelli. The hospitals were set up in 2020 to provide invaluable beds and equipment to treat coronavirus patients, if needed, in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Commercial Flooring Contractors Ltd specialises in commercial and public sector flooring projects, including a lot of work for the NHS. Since joining Recofloor eight years ago, the company recycles all its waste vinyl flooring through the waste vinyl flooring take back scheme

Outlining how the scheme works for them, Mark explains that their fitters separate the vinyl waste into the Recofloor bags from 7am every day, removing any possible contamination. The bags are either dropped off at their local distributor 3D Flooring for collection by Recofloor or collected by the flooring distributor when delivering fresh vinyl supplies. Mark continues: “It’s surprising how much waste vinyl can be generated. Sorting our installation waste is an important daily task at the warehouse; 12 fitters striving to make a difference to our environment. Recofloor carries a lot of weight with larger building companies. For example, Skanska recognises our commitment to recycling as we can show them our Recofloor certificate as evidence that we are 100% committed to recycling our vinyl flooring waste.” Mark says: “More and more customers are supportive of what we do with our waste materials. We are always proud to tell the story of our journey with Recofloor; this has made our company more successful with both existing and new clients.”

Early on in the pandemic, their 34-strong team worked tirelessly for eight weeks laying Polyflor vinyl safety flooring at four field hospital sites in South Wales. When the temporary NHS facilities were decommissioned, having fortunately not received any coronavirus patients, Commercial Flooring Contractors MD Chris Hutchings specified the use of Recofloor at the sites. “Having continually used Recofloor for many years, it was an obvious choice to deploy the scheme on these hospital projects. Recycling is part of our ethics, so it makes complete sense to recycle this flooring and prevent it from being landfilled,” he said. More than 11 tonnes of uncontaminated recyclable waste vinyl were collected for recycling. Chris commented: “It’s great to get the recognition with this Recofloor award, which acknowledges the environmental efforts of flooring sector participants across the UK. And it’s a pat on the back for my lads as well.” Set up in 2009 by flooring manufacturers Altro and Polyflor, Recofloor is the flooring sector’s sustainable take-back scheme for commercial waste vinyl to be recycled into new products, including flooring. News Feature Autumn sales of LVT set to increase thanks to Karndean Designflooring campaign Karndean Designflooring, the UK’s leading supplier of luxury vinyl flooring (LVT), is set to support increased sales for independent retailers this autumn with a new consumer campaign. Launching on 1st September, the ‘Life Lived On These Floors’ campaign will raise awareness of Karndean flooring as a practical choice for every home. Featuring real life homes and families, activities will see Karndean Designflooring launch its first TV advertising as well as online and social media promotions.

“LVT is increasingly seen as a convenient and hygienic alternative to carpet, wood and stone flooring across the home and this has been reflected in a year on year increase in sales.” As home decorators turn their attention away from life lived outdoors during the summer to creating cosy indoor spaces, the campaign will highlight the benefits of LVT and encourage them to consider how Karndean flooring can bring their home all the beauty of wood and stone flooring but without any of the practical downsides. LVT is increasingly seen as a convenient and hygienic alternative to carpet, wood and stone flooring across the home and this has been reflected in a year on year increase in sales in this category. In particular, the rigid core format is acknowledged as a more durable and waterproof alternative to laminate or engineered hardwood over uneven floors or new floors that are still drying out. Responding to the trend for interesting laying patterns and a coherent room to room look, Karndean Designflooring continues to innovate and has recently introduced a multi-format Van Gogh collection, including designs in a rigid core herringbone option, which offers maximum flexibility to match flooring across different subfloor conditions. Sophisticated style, and hard wearing Karndean’s rigid core Van Gogh and Korlok designs offer the sophisticated style and hard wearing surface that customers expect from the market leader as well as its registered K-Core technology, a preattached acoustic layer and a familiar 5G clicklocking mechanism for quicker installation with less subfloor preparation. Showcasing brand advocates who have used Karndean flooring to create a home that reflects their unique family life and the memories that connect them, the campaign features their stories of life’s ups and downs. Each social media influencer will explain how their Karndean floor enables their family to live life their own way and why they can count on Karndean to be with them every step of the way. Scott Cochrane, retail sales director at Karndean Designflooring, said: “Practicality and hygiene are currently top of everyone’s agenda and this has resulted in an increased demand for LVT. Our latest campaign promotes the desirability of Karndean flooring as a product that is not only designed to look beautiful but is also resilient to everything that life can throw at it. “At Karndean we have always been proud to say we design floors that people will love for a lifetime. Home decorators are just as proud to show off their Karndean floors and have been enthusiastic about sharing their experiences of living life on a Karndean floor. Taking their stories as our inspiration, this campaign will highlight why Karndean flooring is not only designed for life but designed for every single moment of every single day for every different life.” Visit karndean.com or follow @karndean_uk on Instagram 40

Carpet Recycling UK Trend in refurb recycling

Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK) says it is seeing emerging trends on the repurposing of carpet and textile flooring waste as a resource in all types of refurbishment projects. The independent non-profit membership association works with companies across the flooring sector and wider industries to develop viable solutions for carpet, carpet tiles and other textile flooring waste. Commenting on several emerging trends, Adnan Zeb-Khan, CRUK Manager welcomes the shift towards better ‘outcomes’ for unwanted carpet, carpet tile and textile flooring that is increasingly being moved up the waste hierarchy – one of their key aims. The flooring trade has continued to remain busy and CRUK has seen a surge in enquiries from a new sector, the fit out/demolition contractors stripping out textile flooring such as carpet tiles from offices and quality broadloom from hotels. Built With: Workplace Experts has become CRUK’s first fit out member. Hall A Stand 45 • 0161 440 8325 • www.carpetrecyclinguk.com

Two Jumpax products were tested successfully with both a three-layer engineered wood with a varnish coating and a two-layer with oil in a temperature up to 35°C and the relative humidity to 78%. Flooring

Factsheet Adhesive Types Acrylic/Resin: Ideal for plasticized PVC and most modern flooring. Bitumen: A tar-like material, bitumen has a high degree of moisture resistance and is used for damp-proof membranes and installing tiles, wood blocks and mosaics. Epoxy Resin: A two-part chemical curing system that is used in aggressive environments such as conservatories, wet rooms, commercial kitchens and exterior installations.

ADHESIVES

SELECTION CHECKLIST

The criteria to select an adhesive will cover the following points. Larger manufacturers offer detailed guides to select the correct adhesive – even indexing floor manufacturer’s products by name to ensure an accurate match. For accurate and up-to-date information consult the F. Ball Recommended Adhesives Guide. Open Time: The time you have to fit the flooring into the adhesive after which the bond will no longer be ideal. The time until the floor may be walked on should be checked.

Polyurethane: An adhesive with rapid bonding characteristics, typically used for wood floors.

Odour: Low odour, solvent-free and low VOC products are increasingly favoured and now have the same performance characteristics of older products.

Polyvinyl Acetate: Typically used for close fitting joints in timber, laminate floors and panels.

Coverage: How thick and how far can the adhesive be spread.

Tackifier: An adhesive for carpet designed to increase the tackiness – or the tack range – of an adhesive.

Application Method: Different adhesives may be applied by roller, trowel or spray.

Water-based Adhesive: Many different types of adhesives now use water as their carrier to avoid odours and flammability issues which are common with chemical solvents.

Strength: Including how quickly the adhesive will “grab” the floor covering and its strength when fully cured. Underfloor Heating: A lot of modern adhesives are suitable for use with underfloor heating but this criteria must be checked where appropriate.

Subfloor: What surface will the adhesive stick to most effectively including concrete, sand cement screeds, levelling compounds, plywood and chipboard. While there are multi-purpose adhesives, specialist products will be better suited to certain surfaces. The porosity of the floor is a key determinant of the type of adhesive to be used and its performance during installation. Special Performance: Certain adhesives are more suitable for damp, humid or high temperature environments. Air Quality and the Environment: The old wisdom that the more it smells, the better it sticks is no longer acceptable to modern consumers and solvent-based products are increasingly replaced by water-based adhesives.

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member

Metro Group www.carpet1st.co.uk Contact: Jill Coward Tel: 01204 393539 jillcoward@carpet1st.co.uk

of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing. While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers. The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

www.smg-group.co.uk Contact: Mike Reed Tel: 0118 932 3832 info@smg-group.co.uk

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see what you would actually use

• Check out the product ranges offered including the own-label options and the UK/European mix

• Ensure you understand any rules that may limit your

flexibility to run your business the way you want

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions ne of the key reasons to join a buying group is to O benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. THE STOCKLISTS September 2021

Increase sales • Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

THE STOCKLISTS September 2021

Flooring factsheet Vinyl Flooring Vinyl is a fast growing sector of the flooring market due to its durability at relatively low cost and huge range of designs available. Sheet vinyl and cushion floor by the roll are popular but the sector is dominated by LVT. In reality, most of the products sold today are “LVP”, Luxury Vinyl Planks, as wood decors are more popular than ceramics and stone but the term LVT is still used to cover the whole non-sheet market.

Benefits

• Huge choice in terms of decors across wood, ceramic, stone and geometric designs

• I mpressive realism – not just in the design but infinishing

techniques that allow for wood knots you can feel, tiles you can grout, etc. See appearance options.

• Excellent performance in durability for high traffic areas, scratch resistance and cleanability. Vinyl also tends to be much more nonslip than natural materials. Some products are water resistant for bathrooms and kitchens.

www.bramptonchase.co.uk

Product options

• Dry back – a sheet or tile that needs to be fixed to the sub-floor using an adhesive.

• Self-adhesive – tiles with a peel-off backing paper to stick to the

sub-floor. Some tiles have adhesive overlaps to stick to each other rather than the sub-floor.

• Loose lay vinyl – tiles that simply drop onto the floor and rely on

www.invictus.co.uk

a high friction backing to keep them in place – they demand a very sound, level sub-floor but are the easiset type of tile to lay or replace.

Click – tiles that have a mechanical jointing system to attach to • Warm and soft to touch compared to ceramic and stone floors - and • one another (like a locked tongue and groove system) and ‘float’ on a good heat insulator anyhow, and suitable for use with underfloor heating systems.

• Sound reduction – vinyl has neglible impact sound compared

to the tap/click of laminate and transmits less sound and vibration compared to solid floor.

• Considerably cheaper than the ‘real’ thing – both to buy and to fit – and tile/plank approach minimises wastage.

Installation

Installation preparation Vinyl requires a dry, sound, level subfloor as the relative thinness of vinyl and its light reflection performance will quickly reveal imperfections after installation as well as cause potential wear issues. Exisitng wooden/MDF floors may need a plywood underlay up to 6mm thick and then the joints will need to be skimmed or taped. Non-wood sub-floors will need a self-levelling screed to be laid to ensure a suitable base for the floor. A damp-proof membrane may be required depending on sub-floor moisture levels. However, new rigid core products are less flexible and can be laid more easily over existing floors – see Construction.

Top Coating Wear Layer Decor Layer

the sub-floor without being glued down. There are many proprietary versions of the click system which offer fast, clean installation and stability.

www.karndean.com

Appearance options Vinyl tiles and planks cover a hugh variety of sizes and shapes and can be mix-and-matched to achieve an infinite number of designs. Current fashions include extra wide and long planks for wood through to very small planks for wood. Border effects can be easy to achieve in LVT. Other notable options include:

• Embossed – this is where the top clear layer of the tile has been

www.krausflooring.co.uk

embossed to create a realistic texture that matches the style of the stone of wood decor. Registered embossed is the most authentic – the texture matches the design so that, for example, a wood knot or hand-scraped element in the wood design can be felt on the surface of the flooring.

• Grouting and grooving – vinyl tiles can be laid with grouting inlay strips or beads of vinyl for addewd realism – and there are acrylic grouts that can be applied. In wood decors, planks are available with v-grooves or bevelled edges between planks for added realism.

www.myvictoria.co.uk

LVT construction

Top coating – A polyurethane or aluminium oxide coating provides protection against scratches and stains and gives enhances anti-slip. Wear layer – This is a key layer - determining the performance and resilience of the product. A 0.3mm (12 mil) wear layer is a good for heavy wear areas. Commercial installations need 0.5mm wear layers or above with 0.7mm at the top end. The wear warranties and guarantees carried by products will be based on this thickness. Decor layer – This is the decor itself - in essence it is a paper- or filmbased photographic inkjet print. (A few LVT floors have the image printed directly to the surface of the floor but this implies less image definition and different wear characteristics.)

PVC Middle Layer(s) Fibre Glass Layer(s) PVC Base Layer

THE STOCKLISTS September 2021

PVC and fibre glass layers – The construction ‘sandwich’ can vary between products but a combination of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) layers for strength and flexibility and fibre glass layers for structural stability may be used. Any click-system profile will be incorporated into these layers. Products often use a combination of recycled vinyl which is cheaper and virgin PVC which lasts longer and is more stable. Rigid core LVT has a solid, less flexible PVC layer with maximum stability which means it can be laid over exisiting, less even flooring without showing imperfections and therefore avoiding wear problems. Base (or backing) layer – The final high density PVC layer varies according to the installation requirement and is designed for taking adhesive or as an ‘underlay’ for loose-lay and click installations. 75

Stocklists: Flooring Fact Sheet from Interfloor

Flooring factsheet Eco-friendly underlay Sustainable underlay

Interfloor ‘Says NO to Waste’

renu® is a game changer. Interfloor’s new underlay meets the concerns of our modern world in reducing waste and being environmentally sustainable.

renu® is a sustainable, recycled carpet underlay and is without question the most sustainable underlay in Interfloor’s long history.

It’s made by bringing together raw materials that we save from going to landfill with some that have a positive effect on the environment.

We have used post-consumer waste, car tyres and plastic bottles in the manufacture of our underlay for many years. But with renu® we have gone even further responding to the aspiration for a fully sustainable product. It’s made from 98% recycled materials, using ethically sourced and genuinely recycled materials, which means keeping waste from going to landfill and is 100% recyclable itself! The main body of the underlay is made of foam reclaimed from recycled soft furnishings, this foam is them mixed with a binding agent and subjected to high temperature steam under high pressure. The backing is made from 100% recycled and unbleached paper and we use vegetable-based inks for printing. The facing film is made from an ethically produced, carbonnegative bio-based film made from sugar cane. The sugar cane actively captures CO2 from the atmosphere whilst at the same time releasing oxygen – making this material not just green, but proactively green. Let’s not forget, the point of underlay is that it feels great and prolongs the life of a new carpet and renu®, being made from highdensity foam and with a thickness of 9mm, is suitable for all areas of the home.

The in-store sales support available to renu® stockists

renu® stockists will be included in the online stockist locator on the Interfloor website.

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will...

• Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Combination

Crumb

PU foam

www.carpenterunderlay.co.uk

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.

www.wilsons-carpet-underlays.co.uk

Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets.

www.interfloor.com

Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired. THE STOCKLISTS September 2021

Flooring factsheet Carpet types

Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE

Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop. Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality. Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

BONDED

Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles. 82

CUT PILE

Freize – Frieze or frisée (pronounced freesay) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas. Saxony – Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies. Twist – The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is a versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours. Velvet – Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then sheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP

When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home. Shag pile – Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface can flatten easily and may lack durability.

Woven Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations. Axminster The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets. Wilton Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.
