FLOORINGNEWS Lacquered luxury BerryAlloc’s Les Essentiels and Les Exclusifs engineered wood flooring collections are made using Ultimtec, a revolutionary varnish that delivers natural beauty, durability and the easy maintenance of lacquered finishes. Launched last year after a two-year R&D process, BerryAlloc’s Ultimtec finish is already gathering a fanbase of retailers that want to offer customers high-quality wood flooring with the simplicity to suit modern living. The success of the hybrid finish is in its ability to bring the natural look of oil with the practical advantages of a hardwearing lacquer. By impregnating the wood with an aluminium oxide rich primer before applying a UV acrylic finish, BerryAlloc has achieved a surface with exceptional resistance to wear and scratching and which requires no specialist maintenance. Les Essentiels and Les Exclusifs also provide a new way to approach the selection of wood flooring, embracing the consumer’s natural reflex to choose colour before texture. In Les Essentiels, BerryAlloc presents 10 classic colours offering a solid choice with wide appeal. In Les Exclusifs, the colours feel more premium and trend-leading in 10 options with an enhanced sense of depth. Both collections are constructed with a HDF core that provides numerous benefits: due to the precise machining of the Best Loc X-Treme profile in the HDF core, it helps with fast installation and delivers a consistent and secure lock, while delivering excellent stability and impact resistance. The core’s density also reduces noise and helps underfloor heating to perform more efficiently. Paired with 2.5mm (Les Essentiels) or 3.3mm (Les Exclusifs) real wood veneers and finished with Ultimtec, this high-tech parquet structure delivers a wood floor that’s ideal for today’s homes. Les Essentials and Les Exclusifs can be enjoyed on BerryAlloc’s brand-new Luxe display, providing retailers with an impressive focal point in store.

Richelieu run-away success Louis de Poortere is continuing to establish its new Richelieu Family with the introduction of a complete runner programme, including the customisable Richelieu Classic. Available in an extraordinary 144 colours, the new Richelieu offers extraordinary versatility and guaranteed service of just four weeks. Bringing homes one step closer to the exquisite quality of fine woven wilton runners available in a variety of widths. Choosing from any of 144 colours in Richelieu Escalier, homeowners can create a perfectly coordinated plain runner in 60, 70, 90 or 120cm widths, enjoying the luxurious feel of a heavyweight wool-rich woven quality. Or in Richelieu Classic, a duo-colour bordered style in the same heavyweight quality and width options, they can mix any of the 144 options for their own unique design available with the same four-week service. Alan Russell, sales director UK, comments: “The new Richelieu family is the result of a major programme focused on our production flexibility and efficiency and this is perfectly exemplified by Richelieu Classic. Choosing from a range of standard widths, homeowners can enjoy the whole process of creating a runner that’s unique to their home, something to tell their friends about, while retailers can enjoy the confidence of a guaranteed fourweek lead time - the result of the 144 yarn colours we always hold in stock” From primary red and yellow, through to deep burgundy and tan or grass green and royal purple, there’s a winning Richelieu Classic combination for any interior style, bringing a ‘bespoke’ runner from an impressively flexible off the shelf programme. FLOORINGNEWS Parquet on parade BerryAlloc’s Luxe display brings a multi-format solution for the presentation of its Les Exclusifs and Les Essentiels parquet collections. Starting off as a single unit with space for 10 Les Exclusifs sampleboards, the Luxe display can be used freestanding or against a wall with a simple switch of graphic card inlay. Then, with the addition of another unit, Les Essentiels can be added into the mix, bringing the full range of BerryAlloc’s latest Ultimtec engineered wood floors. With large graphic panels, these combined displays are designed to be used as wall units. By impregnating the wood with an aluminium oxide rich primer before applying a UV acrylic finish, Ultimtec delivers the look of an oiled floor with a surface that has exceptional resistance to wear and scratching and which requires no specialist maintenance. The impact of the display can be maximised with an additional module that houses full plank samples. Demonstrating the different plank sizes of Regular, XL and XXL formats, the module is a recommended addition to fully maximise the value of display. The complete Luxe display concept provides an impressive demonstration of Les Exclusifs and Les Essentiels and acts as a stylish focal point that benefits from BerryAlloc’s striking brand presence.

Premium perfect Louis de Poortere’s Cardinal from the newly relaunched Richelieu Family has been used in a millimetre-perfect project for the personal residence of a successful property developer. Retailer Clarke’s of Romford installed a bespoke Cardinal woven Wilton carpet to the stairs and landings of a private residence, using the carpet’s luxurious velvet finish to create a runner fitting of this impressive family home. When specifying finishes for his own residence, the property developer specialising in luxury homes turned to Clarke’s of Romford for a stair and landing carpet that upheld his high standards. The retailer recommended Louis de Poortere’s Cardinal from the Richelieu Family woven Wilton collection as an option meeting the client’s exacting requirements. Steve Gosling, Sales Director, Clarke’s of Romford commented “We’ve enjoyed a strong relationship with the customer and Louis De Poortere for many years, both of whom pride themselves on delivering the very best. When our discerning customer required a stair and landing runner for his new home, we had no hesitation in recommending the Richelieu Wilton programme as it offered the premium quality desired with an unrivalled colour choice.” This premium wool-rich woven carpet has a luxurious velvet cut pile finish and with a heavyweight 80oz quality which will endure the concentrated footfall typical of stairs and landings. It also offered the client exceptional choice in colour. From a 144 strong palette, the deep blue of 2501 was selected.

The single Luxe display occupies a footprint of 2050 x 581mm in either orientation, while the premium double Luxe display occupies 4100 x 581mm of showroom floor space. Each display is supported by a full range of marketing materials and back up service from your dedicated BerryAlloc sales manager. T +32 56 52 84 80

Clarke’s of Romford then carried out an intricate and impressively precise installation, whipping in colour-matched blue to a bespoke width narrowed from Louis de Poortere’s four-metre wide option. The central staircase and gallery landings meant this was no ordinary installation, testing the skill and expertise of the retailer’s planning and fitting teams. T +32 56 393 393

FLOORINGNEWS Pattern for the people! Abingdon Flooring’s StainFree Wilton is looking to be a hit of the summer. Exclusively supplied as a dual lectern set, StainFree Wilton has enjoyed a strong surge of interest since its announcement to the trade in March and retailers are now beginning to receive this new wave of patterned carpet, ready to capitalise on the market’s strong performance. Divided between florals, tartans, checks and hessian effects, the collection uses a palette of elegant blues, greys and naturals perfectly in balance with today’s schemes. To make selection easy, Abingdon Flooring has grouped the woven Wilton collection on two lecterns. One lectern contains all the modern plaid designs while the other celebrates the elegance of the collection’s floral and damask designs. Made from high-quality polypropylene yarn, StainFree Wilton is an exciting and affordable entry point into patterned carpet. Millie Barlow, head of marketing, says: “We’re seeing pattern playing a significant role in the homes and palettes of influencers and magazines. Bold prints are big news and we’re certainly beginning to see a shift in the attitudes of consumers to embracing pattern in their home. People are becoming more adventurous and StainFree Wilton responds to this with patterned carpet that’s positioned at mid-level consumers, rather than at the exclusive domain of affluent owners.” The range’s combination of a woven wilton construction and polypropylene yarn ensures great pattern reproduction for a quality look while delivering value and family-friendly performance. Enjoying a StainFree for life promise and 10-year wear warranty, the bleach cleanable carpet makes it easy for homes to enjoy the latest interior styles. T 01274 655 694

News Feature First Karndean Select retail showrooms announced Karndean Designflooring has started the roll out of its brand new Karndean Select showrooms as part of its on-going investment in its network of independent retail partners located throughout the UK and Ireland. Inspired by human nature and informed by research, the creation and build of its new instore Karndean Select concept is designed to offer customers an enhanced experience when selecting a new floor. Scott Cochrane, retail sales director of Karndean Designflooring explains it has never been a more crucial time for us to help our retail partners drive shoppers safely back instore. He said: “Our new Karndean Select showrooms will play a significant role in supporting retailers in maximising the opportunity to engage with new shoppers, retain existing customers and increase brand loyalty.” Corinium Carpets in Cheltenham, Berwicks in Horsham and Glenearn in Scotland are three of the first Karndean Select showrooms already in place with more being installed by the end of 2021. Scott continues: “Following the launch of our Karndean Inspire Studios in 2018 and our on-going investment in consumer shopper research, we wanted to be confident our Karndean Select showroom delivered a meaningful and engaging shopping experience. “Acknowledging that customers shop by colour and

texture first, the standout counter top display features an array of angled chip samples that have been arranged by tone. “It allows shoppers to seamlessly browse display boards and use the interactive tablet to find out more and design their perfect floor with the support from retail partners.” The brand has also redefined its three retail partner categories; Karndean Inspire Studio, Karndean Select and Karndean Partner, with each group offering its own individual experience for customers. “With a large number of Karndean Select retailers placed throughout the UK and Ireland, our new showroom roll out will be a long-term commitment with the aim of having all partners offering the same consistent instore experience,” said Scott.

“From traditional to contemporary, or even geometric or abstract, every consumer has a different style that expresses their personality and fits with their interior style.” Whereas Karndean Inspire Studios offer the ultimate showroom experience limited to an exclusive handful of stores, Karndean Select offers the same enhanced customer journey with a wide range of the product portfolio on display, but more accessible with stores in key towns and cities across the UK and Ireland. Karndean Partners are conveniently located throughout the UK and Ireland with a smaller or selected range of Karndean flooring. Scott added: “From traditional to contemporary, or even geometric or abstract, every consumer has a different style that expresses their personality and fits with their interior style. By better defining our retail partner categories, and enhancing our instore presence, we are able to guide customers to the right type of store to suit their needs.” karndean.com

Fast track for fitters The Academy for Excellence in Flooring’s foundation level courses are the perfect introduction for anyone starting out in the industry, opening a fast-track route to the Academy’s famed Master Installer programme. For installers and apprentices yet to explore a route to professional qualifications, the Academy for Excellence in Flooring’s Foundation Installer: Laminate & Wood and Foundation Installer: Vinyl courses are the perfect way to kick-off a new career in floor installation. Taking place over two-days at the Academy’s well-equipped training facility in Manchester, the courses cover various aspects of subfloor preparation and installation giving fitters the basic knowledge and confidence to install a wood, laminate or vinyl floor. A one-to-one mentoring programme ensures success for every candidate, regardless of previous knowledge or experience, so even the freshest industry recruit will leave feeling enthusiastic and excited about their new career. Importantly, it is also the only entry-level course that opens up a fast-track route to the famed Master Installer badge. Foundation course attendees can enrol for the Master Installer scheme just six months after completion, ensuring a top-level qualification with proven business lead generation in less than a year. Lee Thompson, technical and procurement manager for the Academy, explains: “For many entering the industry, even under watchful experienced installers, the right path to future career security and success can be confusing. Here at the Academy, we appreciate that and have developed a course directly connected to career progression. “The Foundation is just the beginning, with guidance through the dedicated technical helpline and a route to the Master Installer scheme laid out. Ordinarily, we require at least two years of experience, making foundation courses the only option for new flooring installers to get up to speed and gain the skills, experience and knowledge that will mark them out as one of the industry’s best.” The courses offer a mix of discussions, practical installations and theoretical learning and courses can be booked by visiting the Academy’s website. www.quick-step-academy.co.uk

Skip the latest cost rise 2021 was no different when it came to increasing skip costs again on April 1st. Landfill tax has now risen by a staggering 250% over the past few years and will continue to rise for the foreseeable future. On the plus side, with improvements in technology and an increase in carpet recycling plants throughout the UK, it now costs less to recycle all types of carpet and underlay waste than it does to send it to landfill. By installing a Kenburn Carpet Crusher (rental or purchase) you are not only going to save money reducing your ever increasing skip costs, you will also improve your sales conversion rates as well, as the public respond enthusiastically to environmentally friendly recycling initiatives. Special feature

Welcome back to better business! UK retail footfall jumped 88% in the third week of April as high street businesses in England, Wales and Scotland were allowed to re-open doors for the first time in months. According to researchers Springboard, UK retail footfall rose 87.8% week-on-week. Compared to this time last year, footfall was up more than four-fold. However, Springboard noted that despite last week’s big improvement, footfall is still down 25% from two years earlier but the momentum could continue to build they say. Diane Wehrle, Springboard Insights Director, added: “The key issue for retail destinations will be whether this momentum can be sustained. From our evidence of the last two lockdowns, we are expecting footfall to continue to increase over the next few weeks, albeit at a lesser rate. However, the reopening of indoor hospitality on May 17 will provide a further boost to retail destinations as many indoor venues are located in high streets and shopping centres.”

“59% of flooring retailers said sales in 2020 out-performed pre-pandemic business and 69% believe pent-up demand will drive revenue growth in 2021 even further.” The Stocklists Reader’s Survey, March 2021

Joe Staton who runs GfK’s Consumer Confidence Index says: “Spring is in the air with increases across the board on personal finances, the general economy – over the last year and next year – and on current major purchase intentions. This is definitely a movement in the right direction – consumers are feeling a tiny spring in their step.” We asked leading manufacturers and suppliers to show us what they have lined up for the selling season ahead...

The Stocklists polled 2,300 retailers throughout the UK during June 2020. Replies and comments are recorded anonymously. Many thanks to all those who took part.

sales@interfloor.com www.interfloor.com @Interfloor Duralay, renowned for its durability, is also the underlay brand of choice for specialist needs. The crumb rubber, foam and sponge rubber underlays are perfect for high traffic commercial areas. Duralay Heatflow is also high performing when used with wood flooring, laminate flooring and underfloor heating.

Luxurious installations to raise the spirit As the UK cautiously begins to move out of lockdown with the reopening of non-essential retail, homeowners are prioritising improvements and turning to brands they know, love and trust. Whatever their budget, customers are always keen on finishing touches which can turn a good installation into something exceptional. Interfloor’s Gripperrods Premier edgings for example, are the perfect choice for retailers keen to demonstrate their commitment to the details which can make all the difference. Interfloor’s Tredaire and Duralay are two leading brands meeting the requirements of consumer and contractors. Renowned for comfort and superb heat insulation, Tredaire Colours Red is an 11mm, dense sponge rubber underlay, making it the perfect option for both domestic and commercial installations. Within the Tredaire range, Palladium 10mm and Chromium 9mm, both have a high-performance Textron backing for more dimensional stability and cleaner cutting during installation, plus exceptional ‘shock absorber’ properties to help give carpets a longer life. The superior heat insulation properties, luxurious feel underfoot and high acoustic ratings to reduce noise make it the perfect installation for all areas of the home. Both Palladium and Chromium are 180kg/m³ offering superior protection for carpets that is longer lasting and better performing.

Whatever your requirements Interfloor products will not disappoint, and the quality Tredaire Palladium won a National Flooring Innovation Award as a new class of Premium High Density (PHD) product, strengthening Interfloor’s reputation as an inventor of quality flooring products. It is made from 100 % recycled foam giving it excellent ‘green’ credentials. PU foam underlays are particularly good at insulation and impact noise reduction and are comfortable underfoot, durable, and easy to install and if you’re looking for a premium luxurious underlay then Tredaire Dreamwalk is ideal. The thickness is designed to help cushion the flooring between the carpet and the sub floor. It also prolongs the life of the carpet and is suitable for any room in the domestic home.

It uses manufacturing techniques that allow the production of underlays with higher thermal conductivity and hence lower thermal resistance than normal. All have lower ‘tog’ ratings, which allow the warmth generated by underfloor heating to pass quickly into a room. They conduct more heat than other underlays, making them the ideal choice for installations with underfloor heating, bringing greater heating efficiency and the potential of reducing heating bills. Interfloor is confident its British-made brands Tredaire and Duralay will continue to be preferred choices.

“Consumers love the high-performance features of our PHD underlays, and fitters have been impressed with how easy it is to install. The range has quickly become a top choice for professional installations in all areas of the home,” said Interfloor Sales Director Gary Cowley. ‘BEST UNDERLAY MANUFACTURER’ Gary also points out that Interfloor has the accolade of ‘Best Underlay Manufacturer’ award in its trophy cabinet for the second year in a row and is confident it will continue to remain a firm favourite. As customers search for the perfect underlay that offers the Interfloor characteristics -comfort and luxury – many want to tick the sustainability and environmental box too. It is reassuring to consumers that Interfloor has striven to do its bit for the planet. The company is committed to focusing on manufacturing sustainable products that meet high ethical standards and go above and beyond the current industry norm. For example, Interfloor continually looks to innovate and push the boundaries and in doing so has achieved all three major accreditations: ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 and is a member of the Ethical Trading Initiative. It doesn’t stop there, in addition, it takes its ethical considerations to the high standards and as part of its commitment to its workforce, CEO John Cooper was proud to announce recently that Interfloor had become an accredited Living Wage Employer.

FLOORINGBUSINESSNEWS Covid support protected weaker flooring firms?

Carpetright owner builds UK flooring empire

Covid support for business may have saved flooring firms that would not have survived in a normal year, prompting comment that Government schemes were maybe too generous to the trade and unfair to more robust competitors.

National wholesaler Carpets & Flooring is the latest acquisition by Meditor, the British investment group that bought out Carpetright in 2019, to grow its position as a major force in UK flooring.

Insolvency rates for furniture and flooring firms were significantly higher pre-pandemic before suddenly dropping once Government financial support became widely available.

Carpetright CEO Wilf Walsh will step down from that role to head a new entity called Nestware Holdings Limited (NHL), formed by Meditor as the home of its flooring acquisitions which now comprise Carpet & Flooring, FlooringSupplies.co.uk, Contemporary Trade Flooring and Flooring Megastore, in addition to Carpetright.

Research by the authoritative news and market intelligence service The Furnishing Report shows that only about two-thirds of the average insolvency rate in our sector occurred during the pandemic. “Furlough, grants, cheap debt and payment deferrals have supported a huge number of furniture and flooring companies, many of which would otherwise not have been able to survive,” says The Furnishing Report. “It was right for the Government to do so, but the response has been arguably too generous. With the correct amount of support, the number of insolvencies across the trade would have been consistent with prior periods,” it adds.

Retailers react against vaccine passports Vaccine passports would be a “barrier to trade” say retail groups as the Government fails to rule out applying such a scheme to the high street. The Times newspaper reported that shoppers may need passports saying a Downing Street spokesperson had hinted they were being considered and refused to rule it out when pressed whether this would apply to shops. “We are looking at how Covid status certificates could have an important role to play domestically as well as internationally. We will come forward with more detail on them and how they may work in due course,” the spokeperson told the Times. Helen Dickenson of the British Retail Consortium called the idea a “barrier to trade” and said: “While Covid status certification may play an important role in certain activities, such as international travel, our members are clear that it would not be appropriate or useful in a retail setting.”

Scottish chain expects strong summer Leading Scottish flooring discounter J & W Carpets reports high demand and predicts a strong summer of trading across its 22 warehouse outlets. The company says turnover has decreased slightly but profits saw a substantial rise after improvements in its margins. “Demand for the company’s products remains high and trading has been good. The company expects strong sales over the summer,” it said. The statement on current trading came in the filing of historic accounts for the year ended 31 March 2020 which showed sales for that prepandemic year had declined by less than 1% to £11.4 million but profits more than trebled to £377,228. The company added that its performance has not been affected by the pandemic as much as the directors initially feared and it added: “There has been no significant impact on the company’s supply chain from either COVID-!9 or Brexit.”

Carpet & Flooring has 11 sites around the UK including a head office and distribution centre in Redditch which has a turnover of around £100m. The company said: “This addition will extend NHL’s reach into the contract and business-to-business flooring space and presents excellent growth potential, alongside valuable synergies in operations and logistics.”

Victoria posts record results - and acquires International flooring group Victoria plc has announced record results for the last year, growing sales 3% to £640 million despite the pandemic and it is forecasting “strong, ongoing consumer demand.” In a trading update to investors, the Kidderminster-based business said the performance for the 12 months ending April 3 demonstrated its efficiency and resilience “despite the impact of the April-May 2020 lockdowns, which saw over £50 million of revenue reduction in those two months compared to the prior year.” The company added that it “capitalised on strong consumer demand by restarting manufacturing and logistics operations as soon as lawfully permitted – ahead of competitors. The result was a post-lockdown double-digit growth in revenues.”

“The outlook is very encouraging. The Group continues to experience strong, ongoing consumer demand across its key markets.” Victoria described the outlook for the months ahead as “very encouraging” and added: “The Group continues to experience strong, ongoing consumer demand across its key markets. Furthermore, housing transactions, a key 12-18 month leading indicator of flooring sales, are at very high levels – not only in the UK, but across our markets (more than 70% of the Group’s earnings are now generated from outside the UK), which suggests demand will be maintained for some period.” Victoria plc is living up to its promise of an acquisitive 2021 with takeover of three Italian ceramic tile companies for €35m. The manufacturers are Ceramica Colli and Vallelunga and Ceramiche Santa Maria, all of which are located near Victoria’s substantial existing Italian operations. Victoria’s Italian business is growing “at a remarkable rate” according to Executive Chairman Geoff Wilding. “This is the first—and smallest—of several acquisitions we expect to conclude over the weeks and months ahead,” he added.

FLOORING FOCUS

Fit tips for vinyl by F Ball & Co Ltd Given the popularity of Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVTs) and planks, and customers’ high expectations for a high-quality finish when choosing them, it’s crucial to understand the processes that flooring contractors need to follow to ensure a flawless finish is achieved and one that will last for the lifetime of the installation. Stephen Boulton, technical service manager at F. Ball and Co. Ltd., provides a guide to designer floorcovering installations. A long-lasting, visually attractive flooring finish when installing vinyl tiles or planks involves following basic principles of subfloor preparation, as well as taking precautions to avoid common causes of floor failure. Selecting the optimum products at each stage of the process will help achieve professional results. The first step in any floorcovering installation should be to check that the subfloor is suitably smooth and dry. Laitance, the crust of fine particles formed on the surface of the screed as it dries, which may still be present if the subfloor is a newly-installed screed, must be removed mechanically along with other surface contaminants. Guarding against damp A moisture test should always be conducted to determine if the subfloor is dry enough to receive floorcoverings. Excess subfloor moisture, whether residual construction moisture or rising damp, can attack flooring adhesives and cause resilient floorcoverings to blister and lift, ruining the appearance of installations and, in extreme cases, causing complete floor failure. Excess subfloor moisture is, by far, the leading cause of floor failure. F. Ball recommends the use of a calibrated digital hygrometer to measure subfloor moisture levels, in line with British Standards. If relative humidity (RH) levels are higher than 75% where resilient floorcoverings are to be installed, a waterproof surface membrane will be required to prevent subfloor moisture rising up and attacking the adhesive and floorcovering. Advanced products, such as F. Ball’s Stopgap F77 are now available that will isolate residual construction moisture where relative humidity values are up to 98% with a single coat application and will fully cure in as little as three hours.

Creating a base A levelling compound should then be applied over the subfloor to create a perfectly smooth and level surface onto which LVTs can be installed. This ensures that the visual appearance of the floorcovering is flawless and not compromised by imperfections in the subfloor showing through. The application of a heavy-duty levelling compound with high compressive strength and excellent self-levelling properties is recommended to create the perfect base for the installation of LVTs.

When working over flexible subfloors, including plywood or steel, the use of a flexible levelling compound is advised to accommodate movements in the subfloor. Where an LVT installation is part of a refurbishment and old adhesive residues are present after the removal of old floorcoverings, specialist levelling compounds are available, such as F. Ball’s Stopgap 1200 Pro, which can be applied straight over old adhesive residues, without the need to prime beforehand, removing the need for mechanical preparation.

Priming to perfection In most other cases, before the levelling compound is installed it will be necessary to prime the subfloor. When used over nonabsorbent surfaces, such as waterproof surface membranes, primers promote adhesion between the subfloor and the levelling compound applied over it. Applied over absorbent subfloors, such as concrete, sand/cement screeds or plywood, priming also prevents the unacceptably rapid drying of a subsequently applied levelling compound to maintain its working time. Priming also prevents ‘pinholing’. These are small holes in the levelling compound that have the appearance of pinholes or blisters caused by the slow escape of air from absorbent surfaces as the levelling compound cures. General-purpose primers, such as F. Ball’s Stopgap P131, are available that can be used over both absorbent and non-absorbent surfaces. Primers are also available for a number of specialist applications, including F. Ball’s Stopgap P141, which is designed for use over non-absorbent surfaces. F. Ball’s Stopgap P121 primer is specially formulated to promote the application characteristics of compatible levelling compounds when applied over calcium sulphate screeds. The optimum adhesive

The high compressive strength and excellent self-levelling properties of F. Ball’s Stopgap 300 HD heavy-duty levelling compound provide the ideal base for Luxury Vinyl Tiles. 52

Pressure sensitive adhesives are often the best choice for installing vinyl tiles or planks. They form an instant grab upon contact, so contractors don’t need to worry about tiles or planks moving about when they are working, making them ideal for where intricate designs or patterns are being created. F. Ball’s Styccobond F46 pressure sensitive adhesive is also specially formulated to reduce the incidence of trowel serrations shadowing THE STOCKLISTS May 2021

This can be further guarded against by going over the adhesive once it has dried to a tacky film, with a roller that has been pre-coated with adhesive, to flatten the ridges formed by trowel application. The adhesive is part of F. Ball’s ‘System LVT’ range, which comprises waterproof surface membranes, primers, levelling compounds and adhesives that when used correctly and in combination are guaranteed to result in an aesthetically pleasing floor finish that lasts the lifetime of the installation. The System LVT range also features adhesives with a variety of other specialist attributes, including Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS, which combines pressure sensitive and temperature tolerant characteristics. The adhesive develops the ultra-high bond strength to hold vinyl floorcoverings firmly in place in areas exposed to extreme temperature fluctuations (from -20°C to +60°C). The adhesive is also resistant to water, making it suitable for installing floorcoverings in areas subject to water and high humidity, including wet rooms and kitchens that require frequent cleaning. Compatibility check It is highly recommended that contractors check the compatibility of particular floorcoverings and adhesives. For this purpose, F. Ball produces its Recommended Adhesives Guide (RAG), which lists adhesives recommended for use with over 6,000 floorcoverings produced by over 200 manufacturers. It is available as a free app or a printed booklet. An interactive version can also be found on the F. Ball website. Alternatively, you can consult the floorcovering manufacturer’s guidelines. FLOORING FOCUS

Toning up stone Much of the luxury vinyl flooring market is driven by wooden shades but despite this often being the more popular choice when renovating, the versatility of stone floorcoverings should not be underestimated. And manufacturers and designers have been just as innovative in tiles as they have in wood decors – maybe more so as new materials are brought into the mix. Matthew Brook, national sales manager for IVC Group UK and Eire, sees strong signs of creativity. “Granite effects seem to be eternally popular in the homes of the UK and we’ve seen people getting bolder with their granite choices, opting for colours and styles which make a statement and really prove to be the key element which a room is designed around.

existing floor, Pure Tiles also use DreamClick, an innovative 360° locking system that speeds up installation. “Once down, through its unique foamed top layer, this same RCB construction delivers exceptional comfort and combined with Dreamtec+ underlay, vastly improved acoustics, reducing impact noise by 20dB. The finished result is a water-resistant, stain-resistant and hardwearing tile floor that’s comfortable, warm, quiet and durable enough for kitchen use. In short, Pure Click’s authentic stone and tile effects come with none of the drawbacks of their genuine counterparts.”

“With Pure Tiles homeowners benefit from authentic modern tile looks” “Granite effects seem to be eternally popular in the homes of the UK and we’ve seen people getting bolder with their granite choices” “Additionally, industrial design is something we’ve seen more of in recent years and we expect this trend to continue. Industrial, more contemporary looking kitchens and lounges we’ve come to expect in homes on the continent, however slowly but surely, they’re making their way into the thoughts of homeowners with a flare for interior design now in the UK. “One of our major benefits is that Moduleo’s stone LVT styles are warm underfoot whilst reducing reflective walking and transmission sound. This makes them an asset for those looking for an industrial design who don’t want the cold feel on feet in the morning and wish also to reduce the typical noise of shoes on a stone floor.”

From next month Victoria Design Floors will be rolling out the sample update for the Tapestry boards on their Distinctive Flooring stands. Tapestry was first shown to the market at Harrogate in 2019 where it won the Flooring Innovation Award for smooths. Due to launch in spring 2020, the pandemic stopped the company in its tracks, but they are now ready to start to roll out and can’t wait to see how the market reacts to this stunning collection. Made up of 20 different patterned mosaic style tiles, Tapestry comes in boxes of 32, 9”x9” tiles from which various designs can be made. As well as being used on their own, they can also be mixed and matched with complementary 9”x9” and 18”x18” tiles to help create unique floors for your customers. They can even be paired with the Landscape Wildwood planks should someone want to mix planks and stones together.

BerryAlloc’s Pure Tiles collection brings a collection of modern stone looks with the performance advantages of the brand’s RCB construction and fast DreamClick installation. Packed full of sleek modern looks, Pure Tiles is a vinyl tile collection that not only looks great, but that performs brilliantly and is easy to install. Scott Arundell, regional sales director UK & Ireland, says: “With Pure Tiles homeowners benefit from authentic modern tile looks – terrazzo and urban stone just two – with the performance of our RCB construction, based on a lightweight and rigid foamed core. SoftStep cushion vinyl is Abingdon Flooring’s answer to tile and stone effects in rooms where moisture is a worry. Millie Barlow, head of marketing, Abingdon Flooring, says: “For homeowners that want a practical and easy to take care of surface that’s also affordable, there are few floors that can match SoftStep. We’ve some great tile and stone effects throughout the collection. From Victoria in our modern and contemporary Grey-Tex range right up to the stylish ceramic tile of Islington in our super comfortable and easy to install I-Tex, there’s something for every taste and budget. This summer will see new additions to the SoftStep range as we look to expand the range of designs and colour choices that the collection offers. “Importantly, all SoftStep floors carry a few shared traits that make them incredibly versatile as a flooring option, so whether homeowners are recreating the look of a rustic flagstone or going for something modern like concrete tile, they always benefit from a floor that’s comfortable and warm. The perfect addition to bathrooms and kitchens, SoftStep is also durable and our best floors feature a special PUR finish that makes them easy to clean.” Leoline’s Ceramica cushion vinyl collection presents the latest stone and tile looks, without the cost or practical drawbacks.

Leoline – Cappella

Ceramica comes with Leoline’s Superguard finish, a protective PUR lacquer that resists permanent staining – often an issue with porous stone floors – and is really simple to clean. Comfortable and warm underfoot so perfect for barefoot bathroom use, Ceramica features a 15-year warranty and comes in two, three and four-metre widths.

“Like all our floors, the designs are handcrafted to reflect the muted colour tones found in natural limestone and have been developed to include subtle veining, delicate mottling and a chalky appearance to create a realistic finish. Each design can be perfectly paired with a wide range of trends including Scandi, modern industrial and minimalist to name but a few. “It also means those faced with the challenge of an uneven subfloor or an existing ceramic floor have the flexibility to opt for a stone design in a convenient rigid core design.” Harvey Maria says that using a stone, concrete or ceramic effect instantly creates a stylish and rustic aesthetic to both commercial and residential spaces. Concrete flooring has been trending for a while and works equally well in period buildings and contemporary schemes.

“Large Ando luxury vinyl tiles create the appearance of contemporary raw concrete slabs, but are far warmer underfoot than a real concrete floor” These large Ando luxury vinyl tiles are a rustic unfinished concrete effect designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando. They create the appearance of contemporary raw concrete slabs, but are far more durable and warmer underfoot than a real concrete floor. This makes them extremely versatile and ideal for high traffic areas, such as lobbies and entranceways. 19th century encaustic floor tiles form the inspiration behind Northmore - Harvey Maria’s best selling collection that blends unique decorative pattern, heritage colour pigment and authentic patina. They have reinterpreted these stylish Harvey Maria – contemporary concrete and prestigious Victorian floor tiles to create a collection that stands up to the demands of modern home life. Organics Stone gives a natural stone aesthetic, perfect for creating modern rustic styling. A classic design for your kitchen, bathroom or bootroom, this collection is available in a gentle palette of natural shades. And you can add feature strips between the tiles to give the appearance of traditional flagstones. Kellars has been building a comprehensive vinyl collection alongside the growing demand among consumers for choice and quality in the sector and the company can supply plain or patterned designs to suit almost any style, including highly authentic appearance in real stone or wood. In Kellar’s Octavian Vinyl collection, there are 11 total ranges, Lusso and Lumea being the newest which offers an unrivalled range of vinyl with a wide variety of colours and decors to choose from. 56

Dark slate from Kellars’ Allora Unico Collection

“Kellars has been building a comprehensive vinyl collection alongside the growing demand among consumers for choice and quality” For 2021, the buzz is all about Allora Unico, a distinctive new collection of SPC vinyl which was launched in December 2020 to great acclaim with 22 products across the three range: Allora Herringbone, Plank and Rigid-Tile. “We introduced our first herringbone range at Kellars into our Allora Unico Collection in 6 colours and all the options have been in high demand during the start of 2021,” says Kellars marketing manager Claire Lewis. The flagship Camaro range from Polyflor takes LVT decors to the creative edge of innovation with options to design and combine shades for unique and distinctive installations. The company is committed to trend research to develop products that inspire and enthuse consumers across wood, stone, slate and man-made materials, and whether it is applying a modern twist to a traditional design or creating a bespoke floor with intricately cut individual tiles, Camaro delivers in style. Alongside timeless classics, Camaro’s gallery of tile design possibilities includes chevron patterns of stone with oak insets, organic and smoked concrete in a hexagonal configuration, herringbone with marquetry strips, and dual-width planks and brickwork cuts to challenge conventional assumptions about laying stone. The exceptionally wide range of slate decors is worth attention, extending from the conventional dark tone of Atlantic Slate through to lighter shades in Highland, Arctic and Ocean Slate options.

Flooring factsheet Vinyl Flooring Vinyl is a fast growing sector of the flooring market due to its durability at relatively low cost and huge range of designs available. Sheet vinyl and cushion floor by the roll are popular but the sector is dominated by LVT. In reality, most of the products sold today are “LVP”, Luxury Vinyl Planks, as wood decors are more popular than ceramics and stone but the term LVT is still used to cover the whole non-sheet market.

Benefits

• Huge choice in terms of decors across wood, ceramic, stone and geometric designs

• I mpressive realism – not just in the design but infinishing

techniques that allow for wood knots you can feel, tiles you can grout, etc. See appearance options.

• Excellent performance in durability for high traffic areas, scratch resistance and cleanability. Vinyl also tends to be much more nonslip than natural materials. Some products are water resistant for bathrooms and kitchens.

Product options

• Dry back – a sheet or tile that needs to be fixed to the sub-floor using an adhesive.

• Self-adhesive – tiles with a peel-off backing paper to stick to the

sub-floor. Some tiles have adhesive overlaps to stick to each other rather than the sub-floor.

• Loose lay vinyl – tiles that simply drop onto the floor and rely on

a high friction backing to keep them in place – they demand a very sound, level sub-floor but are the easiset type of tile to lay or replace.

Click – tiles that have a mechanical jointing system to attach to • Warm and soft to touch compared to ceramic and stone floors - and • one another (like a locked tongue and groove system) and ‘float’ on a good heat insulator anyhow, and suitable for use with underfloor heating systems.

• Sound reduction – vinyl has neglible impact sound compared

to the tap/click of laminate and transmits less sound and vibration compared to solid floor.

• Considerably cheaper than the ‘real’ thing – both to buy and to fit – and tile/plank approach minimises wastage.

Installation

Installation preparation Vinyl requires a dry, sound, level subfloor as the relative thinness of vinyl and its light reflection performance will quickly reveal imperfections after installation as well as cause potential wear issues. Exisitng wooden/MDF floors may need a plywood underlay up to 6mm thick and then the joints will need to be skimmed or taped. Non-wood sub-floors will need a self-levelling screed to be laid to ensure a suitable base for the floor. A damp-proof membrane may be required depending on sub-floor moisture levels. However, new rigid core products are less flexible and can be laid more easily over existing floors – see Construction.

the sub-floor without being glued down. There are many proprietary versions of the click system which offer fast, clean installation and stability.

Appearance options Vinyl tiles and planks cover a hugh variety of sizes and shapes and can be mix-and-matched to achieve an infinite number of designs. Current fashions include extra wide and long planks for wood through to very small planks for wood. Border effects can be easy to achieve in LVT.

www.karndean.com

Other notable options include:

• Embossed – this is where the top clear layer of the tile has been

embossed to create a realistic texture that matches the style of the stone of wood decor. Registered embossed is the most authentic – the texture matches the design so that, for example, a wood knot or hand-scraped element in the wood design can be felt on the surface of the flooring.

• G routing and grooving – vinyl tiles can be laid with grouting inlay

www.myvictoria.co.uk

strips or beads of vinyl for addewd realism – and there are acrylic grouts that can be applied. In wood decors, planks are available with v-grooves or bevelled edges between planks for added realism.

LVT construction

Top coating – A polyurethane or aluminium oxide coating provides protection against scratches and stains and gives enhances anti-slip. Wear layer – This is a key layer - determining the performance and resilience of the product. A 0.3mm (12 mil) wear layer is a good for heavy wear areas. Commercial installations need 0.5mm wear layers or above with 0.7mm at the top end. The wear warranties and guarantees carried by products will be based on this thickness. Decor layer – This is the decor itself - in essence it is a paper- or filmbased photographic inkjet print. (A few LVT floors have the image printed directly to the surface of the floor but this implies less image definition and different wear characteristics.)

PVC Middle Layer(s) Fibre Glass Layer(s) PVC Base Layer

THE STOCKLISTS May 2021

PVC and fibre glass layers – The construction ‘sandwich’ can vary between products but a combination of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) layers for strength and flexibility and fibre glass layers for structural stability may be used. Any click-system profile will be incorporated into these layers. Products often use a combination of recycled vinyl which is cheaper and virgin PVC which lasts longer and is more stable. Rigid core LVT has a solid, less flexible PVC layer with maximum stability which means it can be laid over exisiting, less even flooring without showing imperfections and therefore avoiding wear problems. Base (or backing) layer – The final high density PVC layer varies according to the installation requirement and is designed for taking adhesive or as an ‘underlay’ for loose-lay and click installations.

Flooring factsheet from Interfloor Best Practice Guide Fitting the Right Underlay Selecting the right underlay is not always easy. There are a lot to choose from and there are many factors to consider such as comfort, durability, suitability with underfloor heating, noise reduction, warmth and more. Interfloor has been advocating the use of underlay with new floorcoverings since the 1940s, pioneering its “British method” worldwide and developing its market-leading brands Duralay and Tredaire to supply hundreds of customers in over 70 countries. Here they offer advice on the key considerations for selecting the best underlay …

Our Underlay Range

Sustainability Re-use and recycling are key considerations for determining a flooring product’s green credentials. Interfloor’s crumb rubber and PU foam underlays contain approximately 80%-90% recycled content. The crumb rubber is made from recycled car tyres and some 3 million are recycled every year to make our underlay. We launched FSC® certified carpet gripper in 2011 and produced the first EC1 and EC2 flooring adhesives in 2008.

Impact sound With more people opting for hard floorcoverings there are major benefits to using a specialist underlay; not least, the reduction in sound impact. Interfloor’s Duralay was the first brand to develop special noise reduction underlays for wood and laminate floors. Independent tests prove our sponge rubber Timbermate underlays, with their superior weight and density, reduce acoustic noise levels by up to 30 per cent.

Underfloor heating It’s important to make sure that the effect of underfloor heating is not reduced by the underlay. Choose a specialist underlay for use with underfloor heating and check its thermal insulation value, making sure the thermal resistance of the total installation doesn’t exceed 0.15m2 K/W. Interfloor’s high tog underlays, including Duralay Heatflow and Tredaire King and Defender, help keep rooms warm and cosy.

Quality standards With greater emphasis being placed on building products’ performance, it’s important that those used in residential and commercial environments conform to British and European quality standards. Interfloor’s underlays and accessories are compliant with the relevant quality and safety standards, including BS 5808: 1991 / EN14499 : 2015. They also hold the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) Green Label Plus accreditation, meaning our products conform to the CRI’s high standards for indoor air quality and low VOC emissions.

Interfloor manufactures Tredaire and Duralay, leading brands underlay market, that are recognized by customers as brands of quality, and with over 70 years of expertise, they are trusted by users throughout the world. 62

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels.

www.interfloor.com

The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet. Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home.

www.floorwise.co.uk

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

Benefits

Types

Poor or old underlay will...

Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

• Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Combination

Crumb

PU foam

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).

www.wilsons-carpet-underlays.co.uk

Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.

www.luxeunderlay.com

Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing. While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers. The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Associated Carpet Group www.acgcarpets.com Contact: Richard Moore Tel: 01942 825520 richard@acgcarpets.com

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements, any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

www.beautifulflooring.co.uk Contact: Carl Harris Tel: 01892 549050 charris31@sky.com

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see what you would actually use

• Check out the product ranges offered including the own-label options and the UK/European mix

• Ensure you understand any rules that may limit your flexibility to run your business the way you want

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions

ne of the key reasons to join a buying group is to O benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. THE STOCKLISTS May 2021

Increase sales

• Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support

Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.
