FLOORINGNEWS New age-old parquet Opening the door on a world of expressive and characterful looks, Les Iconics brings the history of parquet with an engineered construction for a floor that looks old but performs just like today’s very best.

Vinyl hotshots2022 Smart and smooth pages 61-72

Available in Aged and Rustic and featuring traces of traditional craftmanship with hand-scraping and sawing effects, this new collection makes the charm of aged oak more accessible. Julia Egeler, product manager parquet, says: “For Les Iconics, we’ve taken traditional hand-applied aging techniques and translated them into modern machine production.

“We can bring the character of aged oak on a large scale, so this popular look is available from a standard collection and at a far more accessible price than bespoke finishing.” For those homes that want a classic oak laying pattern, Herringbone and Chevron bring the 19th century back into fashion in two parquet laying patterns. Available in a natural oil finish in the warm tone of Lutece, and with large knots and discreet irregularities, both laying patterns present a classic and traditional look that’s much in demand.

Showtime in Sollihull Part 2 of our review of the latest launches pages 44-60

Showcasing depth and warm, Aged floors give the appearance of an old wood plank floor that’s been renovated by hand, using slight traces of sawing and hand-scraping for a crafted feel. Using a natural oil finish that develops character with time, it comes in colours of Neroli, Badiane, Galanga and Massala in an elegant 1900 x 190mm plank. To create the distinct character of an old parquet floor, Rustic has a deep brushed finish. In shades of Sylva and Bosco, it sees a brushed and hand-scraped oak in a natural oil finish. Altis and Hortus combine the brushed finish with handscraping and sawing effects. In Altis, BerryAlloc also uses three different thickness of oak top layer to imitate the irregular effect of old flooring and comes in mixed assortments of 1900, 1200, 680mm lengths to make it feel even more authentic. www.berryalloc.com

Added to a natural construction that’s easy to look after, recyclable, PVC-free and which retains air quality; WallTrend not only looks and performs beautifully but also rises to the demand for more sustainable finishes in the home. Paulo Rocha, Granorte, says: “The time for cork is now and as a new generation begins to appreciate the material for its sustainable characteristics, we’re delighted to able to introduce WallTrend to the market.

“ The collection gives consumers a new way to explore the natural and renewable material and experience its unmistakable look. Combined with floors from our TrendCollection, there’s now a chance to bring the unique qualities of cork from floor to ceiling.” Each WallTrend panel is constructed from an agglomerated cork backing to which a decorative cork veneer is added and then finished with Granorte’s unique Parawax matt finish for easy maintenance. The finished panel is exceptionally lightweight and can be glued directly onto walls using a suitable adhesive. Measuring 600 x 300mm, the panels are ready for residential and commercial use, meeting all relevant standards.

FLOORINGNEWS Jubilant Ulster Ulster Carpets celebrated the Platinum Jubilee with the granting of a Royal Warrant from Her Majesty The Queen for carpet manufacturing. Nick Coburn CBE, Group Managing Director, said, “To receive the Royal Warrant in Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee year is a real honour.

“This achievement has taken several years of dedicated work by our staff and it further underpins the huge success and progression of Ulster Carpets, particularly as we look forward to celebrating our 85th anniversary next year.” Ulster Carpets works closely with the Royal household to develop designs for Royal residences as part of their prestigious contract business for luxury floorcoverings.

Nick is pictured top left with Joyce McIvor, Ulster’s Contract Sales Director.

To mark this year’s Jubilee, the company will be making a rug to be presented to The Queen following a competition launched by the Northern Ireland Office for primary school children to design a rug. Still based on the same site that Nick Coburn’s grandfather founded the company on, Ulster’s forward-thinking and innovative approach has helped them to maintain their manufacturing base in the UK. “One of the key reasons behind this success is that we are the only fully integrated manufacturer of woven carpet operating entirely in the UK. From sourcing the highest quality wool and spinning and dyeing the yarn through to the bespoke design and weaving of our luxury carpets, we have complete control over every step,” said Nick. “We are continuing a significant investment programme to create and secure jobs in the UK.” T 028 3833 4433 www.ulstercarpets.com

Perfect super screed Products from F. Ball and Co. Ltd.’s System LVT range, including the company’s fast-track, fibre-reinforced transitional adhesive, Styccobond F58 PLUS, have been used to install luxury vinyl tiles in an ambitious, modern self-build property in rural Cambridgeshire. Contractors from 4 Floor Fittings began by thoroughly vacuuming the building’s concrete subfloor to remove dust and debris. F. Ball’s technical service team recommended treating the subfloor as a newly installed screed for the purposes of moisture management, despite being installed months earlier, as it had been left exposed to the elements since. Therefore F. Ball’s Stopgap F77 waterproof surface membrane was used to create a barrier to prevent excess subfloor moisture attacking adhesives and floorcoverings, potentially causing floor failure. Once the waterproof surface membrane had cured, the surface was primed using F. Ball’s primer for use over non-absorbent surfaces, Stopgap P141. The company’s Stopgap 300 HD heavy-duty levelling compound was then applied over the entire ground floor to create a perfectly smooth base for the receipt of floorcoverings. The product’s high compressive strength and excellent self-levelling properties help create a flawless finish when installing LVTs, while ensuring a long-lasting, aesthetically pleasing floor finish even when subject to high levels of wear. The contractors then used Styccobond F58 PLUS and F. Ball’s Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS temperature tolerant, moisture resistant, pressure sensitive adhesive to install wood-effect LVTs over the 372m2 area. Styccobond F49 was used where floor-to-ceiling windows were likely to cause temperatures to rise significantly as a result of solar gain. The adhesive will hold floorcoverings firmly in place when subject to extreme temperatures and temperature changes (from -20°C and up to +60°C), which can cause floorcoverings to expand and contract significantly, leading to tenting and gapping at the edges of LVTs over time. Styccobond F58 PLUS was used to install vinyl tiles everywhere else. The fast-track adhesive enables floorcoverings to be installed from as little as five minutes after application, transitioning from a wet-lay adhesive to become fully pressure sensitive. Reinforcing fibres in the formulation provide resistance to lateral movement, holding tiles firmly in place and reducing the potential for them to slide around when working. The adhesive’s high bond strength and strong initial tack also prevent excess adhesive oozing between joints, facilitating easier application. T 01538 361 633 34

FLOORINGNEWS Keep it quiet With sound-reducing underlays for wood, laminate and LVT floors, floorwise makes it easier to create fantastically quiet floors. Wood, laminate and LVT floors may be beautiful and practical floors, but they are also noisier than their softer counterparts. Fortunately, with floorwise by their side, installers can soften the sound of footsteps – called impact sound – and reduce the buzz of background noise – airborne sound – with a range of dedicated sound-absorbing underlays. Many ‘acoustic’ underlays struggle to deal with both types of sound, but the rubber sponge constructions of floorwise Acoustica underlays are capable of absorbing airborne as well as impact sound, something particularly true of the range topping Acoustica Gold Supreme. Using a high-density rubber crumb construction, this 3.5mm thick product not only delivers impressive impact and airborne noise reduction, but also supports click joints and copes with subfloor irregularities. With a built-in moisture barrier, this really is a fantastic quality wood and laminate underlay that’s ready to take on the toughest challenge. For more cost-conscious wood and laminate installs, the Whisper collection provides some great options including Whisper Gold, a 5mm high-density PE underlay packed with features including 21dB impact sound, absorption of minor subfloor irregularities, cushioned support and a built-in water vapour barrier. Even Whisper basic foam underlay provides 18dB of impact noise reduction, meaning that whatever the budget, you can have a quieter wood or laminate floor with floorwise. www.floorwise.co.uk wiseup@floorwise.co.uk

Skills super-heroes

Pride of Lion Floor

The Academy for Excellence in Flooring is the perfect place to brush-up those self-taught skills and learn the quickfire tips and tricks that will turn you into a flooring expert from the industry’s very best.

Lion Floor is the cost-effective alternative to good quality flooring grade plywood and the reliable way to a troublefree installation.

There’s no doubt that the flooring industry has its fair share of self-taught installers, many of whom have racked up many years, if not decades, of successful work. However, that’s not to say that there’s no room to improve and even the most battle-hardened installer can learn a thing or two at the Academy. In fact, a course at the Academy can be a way to unlock even more business and tackle those jobs previously thought out of reach. Lee Thompson, technical manager, The Academy for Excellence in Flooring, explains more: “We often find self-taught installers will be wary about complicated jobs or simply just avoid them altogether. At best this is somewhat deflating for confidence and at worst it is damaging to business. Taking a course at the Academy is a way that they can gain skills and make sure they are ready for any challenge.” Take stairs for example, a notoriously problematic topic for wood, laminate and LVT floors. Even measuring them can cause problems. Taking the errors out of tape measures and overcoming the curves that defeat stair spiders, the Academy teaches a simple way to get the perfect measurements on all shapes and sizes of stairs, every time. It’s getting these details right that’s often the difference between a first-class job and a disaster that seems never to go away. The Academy also teaches how to fix problems, so that experienced self-taught installers can become the expert of the moment, fixing the problems that others simply can’t. Teaching how to replace a single damaged plank whether it be laminate, LVT or even nailed down solid, rather than having to remove skirtings and lift the entire floor; is just one example of how the Academy will turn you into a flooring superhero.

By eliminating the core gaps, veneer overlaps and delamination issues that can be found in even the best quality plywood, Lion Floor is the engineered fibreboard subfloor that can be relied upon for the trouble-free installation of LVT and other resilient flooring. Available in a range of sheet sizes for domestic and commercial work, Lion Floor is preconditioned (moisture content 8-10%) so there’s no need to wet and it can be cleanly cut with just a knife, cutting down on mess and noise. Suitable for fixing with nails and screws, this is a versatile, reliable and easy to work with engineered board that’s a better alternative to flooring grade plywood. Peter Jones, Finnish Fibreboard says: “Lion Floor eliminates the problems that can be found in flooring grade plywood, so you can always be confident that it will deliver a lasting and reliable subfloor. We’ve developed the manufacturing process over 80 years and have refined the product so that it not only delivers as a cost-effective alternative to plywood, but one that’s also easy to work with, more reliable and more sustainable.” Finnish Fibreboard manufactures Lion Floor from wood by-products sourced locally and from legally managed, sustainable forests. Lion Floor is the first hardboard panel to be designed and manufactured specifically for the flooring industry. It is also one of a very small number of fabricated underlays which can be used for LVT and other resilient floor coverings that meets British Standards and CFA guidance. FLOORINGBUSINESSNEWS Carpet imports crash in Q2

F. Ball appoints dedicated retail representatives

Carpet imports into the UK have plummeted by 38% at the start of the second quarter while Belgian volumes into Britain, its largest market, have more than halved.

F. Ball and Co. Ltd. has appointed two new sales representatives with the exclusive remit of supporting the retail flooring sector.

In the latest data from HM Revenue & Customs for April, analysed by The Furnishing Report, the value of all carpet imports is seen to have declined by 18.7% to £82.7m but these figures masks the true extent of the decline due to the inflationary pricing of current imports.

Lizzie Farrimond and Gabriela Harper will be the first point of call for information and advice on the company’s range of flooring adhesives and preparation products, as well as the procedures needed to ensure optimum results when using them. They will also coordinate free training courses, facilitated by the F. Ball Centre of Excellence, and raise awareness of the benefits of membership of Ball Rewards – the premium reward scheme for all flooring professionals – including cashback on all purchases of F. Ball products.

The volumes landed at UK ports in April show the full picture with total carpet imports falling 38.1% by volume, Belgium imports down 55%, the Dutch down 39% and volumes from India reduced by 32%.

Spending bubble has burst Falling consumer confidence and soaring inflation mean furniture and flooring are among the biggest casualties as shoppers rein in their discretionary spending.

“Sales continued to see declines as the cost-of-living crunch squeezed consumer demand. Higher value items, such as furniture and electronics, took the biggest hit as shoppers reconsidered major purchases during this difficult time,” said BRC Chief Executive Helen Dickinson. She added: “It is clear the post-pandemic spending bubble has burst, with retailers facing tougher trading conditions, falling consumer confidence, and soaring inflation impacting consumers spending power.” UK retail sales contracted last month as consumers feel the squeeze from the country’s cost-of-living crisis according to the latest British Retail Consortium-KPMG retail sales monitor. On a total basis, sales fell 1.1% in May on the year before. This compared to a surge of 28% in May 2021, though against a lockdown-marred comparison period in 2020. The effect of inflation on the value of retail sales is also thought to mask a bigger slump in the actual volume of sales in the big-ticket item sector.

The new positions were created to help flooring retailers satisfy greater customer expectations when installing particular types of floorcoverings, such as luxury vinyl tiles (LVTs), which have grown exponentially in popularity over the last few years. The retail trade reps can advise on F. Ball’s System LVT range, for example, which comprises products that when used correctly and in combination, guarantee a professional flooring finish when installing these floorcoverings.

Lizzie Farrimond

Responsible for F. Ball’s retail customers in the North, Lizzie Farrimond was previously northern sales representative and distributor account manager for her family’s adhesives business.

Gabriela Harper Heading up the South, Gabriela Harper joins from an accessories manufacturer, where she helped clients in merchandising, training and communications strategies. Her knowledge of interior design is expected to be a unique advantage in her new role. T 01538 361633 www.f-ball.co.uk

Thankyou for the music at Metro! The Metro Group celebrated in style at their social event with music from ABBA - the (almost) real band and not just some digital avatars! The annual occasion was held at the Forest of Arden Hotel & Country Club near Birmingham with more than 130 members, suppliers and guests of the Carpet1st buying group. Everyone who attended had a gift in their room from a small independent business https://www.crescentliverpool.com/ who support mental health & homeless charities as the brothers who run it have personal experience of those areas. Metro took this idea forward to raise money for MIND and SHELTER with a £500 cash raffle prize. With the generous support of all the guests on the evening the raffle raised £1,600. The winner was James Bickerdike of H Morgan Ltd in ,Harrogate who immediately donated the £500 prize back to the charities. This made the total on the night £2,100 and the Metro Group made a further £500 donation which means it will split £2,600 between the two charities. Wally Burns of Tameside Flooring was recognised for having been a Metro member for over 30 years – he retired and sold his business during the pandemic.

CASE STUDY Recognised by COP26

“ Having a fully sustainable underlay

product available is the right step forward for the industry. MJ’s are happy to be using and promoting this product with our clients. COP26 was the perfect event to use this product for the first time.

Jennifer Bishopp of MJ’s Event Services Ltd, the flooring contractor for COP 26, said:

World-class success in sustainability Europe’s largest manufacturer of carpet underlay and flooring accessories was proud to supply 286 rolls of renu, its first sustainable and ethically produced underlay, for the COP26 conference which took place last October. In keeping with the spirit of the International Environmental Conference agenda, Interfloor committed to not only supply the underlay but also to recycle it when the world leaders had left Glasgow. The product’s green credentials were recognised by conference organisers and a key requirement for supplying renu was to ensure no waste. After the event, all the rolls of underlay were returned to Interfloor’s Haslingden site in Lancashire where it was then re-granulated and made into new rolls of renu. “This new product is a game changer, bringing together more materials that we say from going to landfill. One of the most standout qualities of venue is that when the world leaders left the top 26 conference, the underlay was fully recycled,” said John Cooper, Interfloor CEO.

“ It is without question the most sustainable

underlay in a long history and we were delighted that it has been recognised by a COP26 it’s driving for this full circle of no waste, he said.

Driven by a vision to aim for 100% recycling in the manufacture and after life of a high-quality underlay, the Interfloor team that developed this innovative high-quality underlay also built in the company’s established features of luxury and comfort. Jennifer Bishopp of MJ’s Event Services Ltd, the flooring contractor for COP 26, said: “Having a fully sustainable underlay product available is the right step forward for the industry. MJ’s are happy to be using and promoting this product with our clients. COP26 was the perfect event to use this product for the first time.” Part of Interfloor’s Tredaire family, renu is made in the UK from 98% recycled materials – mainly foam reclaimed from recycled soft furnishing – and it is 100% recyclable itself. The backing is made from 100% recycled and unbleached paper and water-based things are used for printing. The film used on renu is made from an ethical reproduced carbon negative bio-based film that comes from sugar cane. The sugar cane actively captures CO2 from the atmosphere whilst at the same time releasing oxygen – making this material not just green, but proactively green. 100% recycled plastic is also used for the packaging. Solihull showtime review – part 2 A second look at more of the latest launches and trends at the season’s agenda-setting show...

On a mission Abingdon Flooring Abingdon Flooring really went to town to showcase the very best of British carpet manufacturing, presenting new qualities to keep buying group members in carpets that deliver style, quality and affordability. There was a preview of Finesse and Caress from the StainFree family and Charter Berber Deluxe and Charter Loop from the wool Wilton Royal collection, as well as a chance to see the hyped Love Story Velveteer and a sneak peak of Wild Silk. With a rounded palette of eternally popular grey and beige, as well as some fresh and modern colours, Finesse and Caress share colours and a 1/10th gauge construction, using differing pile weights and depths to balance affordability and luxury throughout the home. Abingdon Flooring is also making sure a new generation of homeowners enjoy the natural qualities of wool with the 80/20 wool blend of Charter Berber Deluxe. Bringing affordability and the unmistakable look and feel of wool that has been cleverly enhanced with meltbond for improved appearance retention, this classic Berber style come in 20 elegant colours. And for natural purists, the carpet brand showed Charter Loop, a 100% wool quality in a natural and rustic palette.

Headline acts Louis de Poortere Louis de Poortere presented headline acts from its new rug collection 2022 and the Richelieu woven carpet family to visitors at this year’s BGNFS. Showing off improved point of sale with the new Richelieu display, as well as drapes of its latest rug designs, including unique flat woven textures, Bauhaus patterns and the brand’s first circle rugs; the Louis de Poortere stand was certainly a chance to see just how the Belgian manufacturer is making moves in the UK flooring scene.

“The last couple of years have been transformational for our brand,” says Alan Russell, sales director UK. “We’ve had an extensive overhaul of our rug collections, a complete rework of our Richelieu woven Wilton programme to dramatically improve offer, efficiency and service, and the introduction of new point of sale to maximise its presence in stores.

The beating heart of broadloom Balta Balta is very much back in business in the UK after the Belgian broadloom brand was sold to the Kidderminster-based Victoria Group in a deal finalised in April this year – exciting times lay ahead for this mainstream manufacturer. “Balta will continue to operate as an independent brand and carries on doing what Balta does – only we’ll be doing more of it and better,” says Filip Poelman, Balta group sales director (pictured left with UK sales director Wim Verest).

“All the existing ranges carry on but with an added impetus. Product development is the beating heart of Balta so there will be a lot happening under the new ownership.” Balta retains its factories and yarn divisions in Belgium but the focus of the business is in Britain where retailers and wholesalers rely on the company’s extensive portfolio. Most of the original Balta team have transferred under the new ownership to drive the business forward. A key benefit will be the extent of UK stock holding as Balta can now take advantage of the huge Alliance distribution network owned by Victoria which will insure reliable and quick deliveries across the UK. Balta says they will be building on key manmade collections such as Gala, Noble, Made in Heaven, Satino and Eternity as well as its Woolmaster natural fibre range. Balta will be exhibiting at The Flooring Show in September. “We have a big plan,” says Filip. “You’ll be hearing a lot more from Balta.” T +32 56 62 22 62 www.baltagroup.com

Bettering the best-sellers Lano Lano has been busy making its best sellers even better with a colour makeover across several of its most popular ranges. Warmer tones and soft pastels have been rolled across the Heatherwtist collection and the subtlely heathered Startwist range while the re-colouring of Fairfield has also added a pastel blue stripe. And building on the success of Fairfield, Lano has launched a salt-and-pepper option as Fairfield Silk in two weights. “Salt and pepper has been a real success for Fairfield Silk since we launched it late last year Q3 2021 and many were seeing it for the first time at the BGNFS and it gets a great reaction from retailers for its young, fresh style,” says Gary Alp of Lno (pictured left). In its Touchdown collection, new Soft Perfection made its debut at Solihull. This is a clever extension to the Soft Distinction range that made its first appearance in 2020. Lano has selected the ten best selling colours for the Perfection range and created a higher, plush pile construction to show off those shades to best effect. And Lano has also given a new push to its polyamide Touch of Luxury collections with new colours and re-invigorated marketing base around mood boards to reflect contemporary themes. Expect the unexpected Fells Carpets A visit to the Fells Carpets stand is always rewarded with something new and often unexpected as the company thrives on finding unique and unusual designs to delight its customers. This year, the intrigue was around the new Platinum range which creates distinctive, textured designs by pushing double-layer heat shrink yarn techniques to their limit. The result is a striking threedimensional pattern in florals and geometric options with fine definition. An emphasis on silvery grey colours gave rise to the Platinum range name – alongside the Jubilee celebrations – and is made from recycled, bleach-cleanable polyester so it has a lot of benefits to boast about. Fells Commercial Director Carl Cumming was also showing a large range of small pattern geometric designs to gauge reactions from visitors. “I think the trend towards small patterns is gaining more and more momentum and we have had a good reaction to these options,” he said. The selection includes a unique dogtooth plaid, artistic linear designs and a take on traditional florals in striking modern colours. The Platininum range is pictured left with Shona Buchanan. Refining uniqueness Kersaint Cobb The uniqueness of Kersaint Cobb is undergoing a quiet revolution to refine its portfolio of products and build on its reputation for distinctive design and savvy style. “We are not a generic brand and the market doesn’t expect the ordinary from us. So we have to be exciting and exclusive, and we are going to be brave on product development,” says Owen Neal, Sales Manager at Kersaint Cobb (pictured left). The company sells 50/50 between wool and naturals and this year’s focus is on the wool side of the business with a thoughtful process of development on colour and texture across its range of fashionable wool loops. Inspired Directions, a finely crafted tight wool loop in 12 colours, is selling strongly, having boosted its popularity in recent months with a major marketing push that doubled its appearance on social media. Stronger support from manufacturers CRUK Carpet Recycling UK reports growth in support from the manufacturing sector with a doubling in the number of its core funders over the past three years. CRUK Manager Adnan Zeb-Khan (pictured left) commented: “Our presence is helpful at the BGNFS as it helps retailers, contractors and manufacturers to consider the waste that inevitably gets produced and find better and smarter ways of dealing with it. “Support and collaboration from the manufacturing sector has grown significantly. We are pleased to report that for the return of the live exhibition in 2022, we have 15 core funders; up from seven since the last show in 2019.” Positive aspects of the show included more discussion on collaboration with existing and potential new members on the way forward through CRUK’s circular economy initiatives. CRUK also addressed the ‘misconception’ from some retailers that by just disposing of textile flooring waste in a skip doesn’t necessarily mean it is going to landfill. Adnan emphasised that the need to discuss end destinations of all carpet and textile flooring wastes “is an important one to have with existing waste management providers.” Latest CRUK figures reveal that the industry is diverting approximately 65% of textile flooring waste from landfill. Landfill diversion figures from the 2020 survey will be shared at the annual conference on 29-30 June. Around 430,000 tonnes of carpet and textile flooring waste arises annually in the UK. Buzzing for business Kingsmead Kingsmead has moved up a gear with its extensive on-trend offer of mainstream quality carpets. New branding was launched late last year and the consumer website has just gone live so the business is buzzing and keen to get noticed.

“We have a sharper approach to consumers which appeals to modern families,” says national sales manager Adam Medhurst. “We’re being a little bolder about colour and we are also structuring our ranges along the good-better-best approach to give retailers the maximum opportunity to trade up.” Kingsmead’s portfolio has been cleverly organised across three collections – Everyday Home covering a dozen easy-clean polypropylene twists; Natural Home, for the wool ranges with everything from classic twists, berbers, stripes and Kingsmead’s highly respected range of loops; and Luxurious Home, which includes the superior finish of nylon velvets. And finally, a re-colour of Kingsmead’s Berber Traditions was launched in Solihull. Pattern for the people Adam Carpets With its own dyehouse and design studio, Adam is a company dedicated to colour and design, and it used the strange times of the last two years to micro research consumer trends closely and carefully – people want colour and pattern. “We have reached some interesting conclusions about consumer choice right now,” says Chris Adam. “There are a couple of themes that stand out in colour – one of which is the ’goes with grey’ palette that includes yellows, blues, teal, and pink. Then there is a definite move towards the retro colours alongside earth tones and neutrals.”

Reflection – Relationships and emotional well-being form the central theme of all trends, our connection to the natural world, to the power of positivity. Warm neutrals help create spaces to relax and retreat, providing serenity within our homes.

Excelling in accolades Ulster Carpets Ulster Carpets is flying high right now with a lot of positives driving the business forward on all fronts. At the BGNFS, the company was awarded the Supplier of the Year award for the first time by buying group Flooring One and returned from Solihull to announce their appointment as a Royal Warrant holder to supply carpets to The Queen – just in time for the jubilee! Jeremy Wilson (centre) and Andrew Cicquel (right) receive the coveted Supplier of the Year award from Peter Karras from Flooring One. And business has been strong too during the pandemic and the company has taken on four new reps to drive it forward. At the buying group event, Ulster introduced two new designs for their tufted loop range, Open Spaces. Made from 100% Laneve New Zealand wool that is suitable for heavy residential applications, Raglan and Napier are available in colour-matching 5m, 4m, 3m, 2m and 1m Multi Widths. Plaids have always been a strong seller for Ulster and, later this year, Glenmoy, a traditional, large format design will add four new options while Beaumont will add two new colours to its soft, heathered portfolio. Going for gold Penthouse Carpets It is only appropriate that Penthouse Carpets is going for gold in this, their 50th anniversary year – but it is a happy coincidence that the colour has become such a strong theme for interior designers in 2022.

To celebrate their occasion, Penthouse added a vibrant new gold to the 18 colours of their smart Stateside range but the company is no stranger to colour. “We’ve always loved colour so the trend towards brighter shades in carpet that is coming through now is perfect for Penthouse,” said marketing manager Gemma Kopczyk. Celebrating with a Knight on the Tiles Karndean Designflooring The hugely popular Knight Tile range from Karndean Designflooring just got even better with a stunning display at Solihull which showed just how versatile this collection can be. From statement or super subtle, Knight Tile has a breadth that takes some beating in the market now that 10 new wood and 11 new stone decors have been added as well as six new herringbone designs in wood and two in stone. “The new options are beautiful and it’s been incredible to be able to show it all off together on our stand at the show,” says Stella Coyle, retail sales manager at Karndean Designflooring.

Glacial Marble

“We have had an exceptional good reaction from retailers,” said Stella. “The new options have filled in all the gaps and made the collection really accessible to everyone. The new colours follow the warmer colours that consumers want to see and our focus on herringbone is absolutely on trend.” The new mid and light toned woods show those more subtle, warmed tones, all carefully researched by Karndean’s design team from real wood samples. In stone, it’s the urban chic on concrete and slate designs that hit the contemporary target.

Versatile practicality and exemplary performance The versatility of this collection covers a mix of gluedown and rigid core formats in both full-sized planks (36” x 6”) or tiles (12 x 18”) and a modern herringbone size (18” x”3”). The style can flow over different subfloor conditions, including uneven or drying floors or where sound transmission from rooms above is a consideration as the crossover of the same designs in a rigid core format means installers can respond quickly and easily to the demands of each site. All Karndean designs are durable, waterproof and compatible with underfloor heating, as well as low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and phthalate free.

Refined approach to heathers Cavalier Carpets

Hans Lowe of Calvalier Carpets

Cavalier Carpets arrived in Solihull in their strong new “family values” branding which has been very well received in the market since its launch at the end of last year – helping establish the company as a main player in affordable quality.

Cavalier has had huge success with its highly popular Pennine Heathers range which has become a safe bestseller for retailers. Building on the strength, the company has created a premium version called Snowdon, to be launched in Q3. The name Snowdon implies whiteness and hints at the clean, white new Zealand wool which is the starting point for this impressive new collection that sets itself apart with clean, modern colours which have been very carefully chosen.

“This is a refined heather twist where we have increased the weight but not the pile height to give a dense, fine finish,” says Hans Lowe of Cavalier, “Retailers who like wool will really like this carpet.” Cavalier was also taking soundings at the show for additional options in polyester following the successful launch just before the pandemic of Silken, a beautifully soft high quality two-ply twist so expect to see more news at Harrogate about this increasingly popular fibre. The new functionality will allow estimators appointments, calls and follow-ups to be booked into the diary, with a duration of fit based on overall labour charge – emails can be sent to all the participants to keep them on track. And a new feature just launched which is already proving popular is the ability to add photos to a job – specifically to allow estimators to take photos during the visit and upload and annotate these to help guide installers on the type of installation, location, sub-floor condition and access issues.

Affordable options, always in style Mastercraft Rugs The rug industry has performed very strongly during the last two years as consumers looked for options to improve their homes and brighten the mood with fashionable designs and cheerful colours. Lancashire-based Mastercraft is skilled at building design portfolios across the widest range of styles that capture the mood of the consumer and provide affordable options for retailers to make the sale.

“The market has been very positive towards rugs,” said Robert Dickson, “and there has been very little price inflation with increasing costs being offset by currency fluctuations, so we have been able to provide competitive options throughout the pandemic.” Mastercraft’s strongest sellers include DaVinci, where traditional designs are interpreted with the latest colours, and Galleria, high density quality rugs which have appealed to the current trend for more abstract, artistic designs. The berber style pile of Mehari continues to perform well and an eye-catching example of latest trends on show at Solihull were the marble designs in the company’s Quartz range of wilton rugs.

Galleria

Among the bright, bold rugs, Robert pointed to some darker, moody designs. “I have to admit that I wasn’t sure that these were right for the UK market but these Scandinavianinfluenced styles are doing really well – so it just shows you have to have something to cater for every taste,” he said. Mastercraft was voted Rug Supplier of the Year by Flooring One on Solihull. Pictured left to right is Emma Rackley, AIS Home Director, Robert Dickson and Peter Karra of Flooring One.

Don’t get that sinking feeling Woolsafe WoolSafe has produced an impactful new video showing in graphic detail, how the use of unsuitable cleaning products can have a detrimental effect on the performance of wool carpet. “Wool has a natural resistance to liquid stains – they will sit on the surface for quite a while, giving carpet owners time to easily blot them up – but the wrong cleaning product can degrade the fibre and jeopardise this,” says Steve Bakker of WoolSafe. “Once that damage has been done, the wool loses its repellency allowing spills to soak into the fibre which makes them much more difficult and time consuming to remove. The best option in this case is to improve the carpet’s performance by having a WoolSafe Approved Service Provider apply an approved carpet protector, which restores the repellency” says Steve. WoolSafe is promoting the use of carpet care products which it has approved and certified after extensive testing to ensure that they perform effectively for the life of the wool carpet. The video is on the homepage of WoolSafe and is a real eye-opener! – see the link below. T 01943 850817

FLOORING FACTSHEET

ADHESIVES SELECTION CHECKLIST

The criteria to select an adhesive will cover the following points. Larger manufacturers offer detailed guides to select the correct adhesive – even indexing floor manufacturer’s products by name to ensure an accurate match. For accurate and up-to-date information consult the F. Ball Recommended Adhesives Guide. Open Time:

Subfloor:

The time you have to fit the flooring into the adhesive after which the bond will no longer be ideal. The time until the floor may be walked on should be checked.

What surface will the adhesive stick to most effectively including concrete, sand cement screeds, levelling compounds, plywood and chipboard.

Odour:

While there are multi-purpose adhesives, specialist products will be better suited to certain surfaces.

Low odour, solvent-free and low VOC products are increasingly favoured and now have the same performance characteristics of older products.

Coverage: How thick and how far can the adhesive be spread.

Application Method:

Bitumen: A tar-like material, bitumen has a high degree of moisture resistance and is used for damp-proof membranes and installing tiles, wood blocks and mosaics. Epoxy Resin: A two-part chemical curing system that is used in aggressive environments such as conservatories, wet rooms, commercial kitchens and exterior installations. Polyurethane: An adhesive with rapid bonding characteristics, typically used for wood floors. Polyvinyl Acetate: Typically used for close fitting joints in timber, laminate floors and panels. Tackifier: An adhesive for carpet designed to increase the tackiness – or the tack range – of an adhesive. Water-based Adhesive: Many different types of adhesives now use water as their carrier to avoid odours and flammability issues which are common with chemical solvents.

Special Performance:

WORKING IN A HIGH TEMPERATURE ENVIRONMENT?

Certain adhesives are more suitable for damp, humid or high temperature environments.

Strength:

Air Quality and the Environment:

Including how quickly the adhesive will “grab” the floor covering and its strength when fully cured.

The old wisdom that the more it smells, the better it sticks is no longer acceptable to modern consumers and solvent-based products are increasingly replaced by water-based adhesives.

A lot of modern adhesives are suitable for use with underfloor heating but this criteria must be checked where appropriate.

Acrylic/Resin: Ideal for plasticised PVC and most modern flooring.

The porosity of the floor is a key determinant of the type of adhesive to be used and its performance during installation.

Different adhesives may be applied by roller, trowel or spray.

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing. While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers. The bottom line is the bottom line. THE STOCKLISTS July 2022

Flooring factsheet Vinyl Flooring Vinyl is a fast growing sector of the flooring market due to its durability at relatively low cost and huge range of designs available. Sheet vinyl and cushion floor by the roll are popular but the sector is dominated by LVT. In reality, most of the products sold today are “LVP”, Luxury Vinyl Planks, as wood decors are more popular than ceramics and stone but the term LVT is still used to cover the whole non-sheet market.

Benefits

• Huge choice in terms of decors across wood, ceramic, stone and geometric designs

• I mpressive realism – not just in the design but infinishing

techniques that allow for wood knots you can feel, tiles you can grout, etc. See appearance options.

• Excellent performance in durability for high traffic areas, scratch resistance and cleanability. Vinyl also tends to be much more nonslip than natural materials. Some products are water resistant for bathrooms and kitchens.

www.bramptonchase.co.uk

Product options

• Dry back – a sheet or tile that needs to be fixed to the sub-floor using an adhesive.

• Self-adhesive – tiles with a peel-off backing paper to stick to the

sub-floor. Some tiles have adhesive overlaps to stick to each other rather than the sub-floor.

• Loose lay vinyl – tiles that simply drop onto the floor and rely on

www.invictus.co.uk

a high friction backing to keep them in place – they demand a very sound, level sub-floor but are the easiset type of tile to lay or replace.

Click – tiles that have a mechanical jointing system to attach to • Warm and soft to touch compared to ceramic and stone floors - and • one another (like a locked tongue and groove system) and ‘float’ on a good heat insulator anyhow, and suitable for use with underfloor heating systems.

• Sound reduction – vinyl has neglible impact sound compared

to the tap/click of laminate and transmits less sound and vibration compared to solid floor.

• Considerably cheaper than the ‘real’ thing – both to buy and to fit – and tile/plank approach minimises wastage.

Installation

Installation preparation Vinyl requires a dry, sound, level subfloor as the relative thinness of vinyl and its light reflection performance will quickly reveal imperfections after installation as well as cause potential wear issues. Exisitng wooden/MDF floors may need a plywood underlay up to 6mm thick and then the joints will need to be skimmed or taped. Non-wood sub-floors will need a self-levelling screed to be laid to ensure a suitable base for the floor. A damp-proof membrane may be required depending on sub-floor moisture levels. However, new rigid core products are less flexible and can be laid more easily over existing floors – see Construction.

Top Coating Wear Layer Decor Layer

the sub-floor without being glued down. There are many proprietary versions of the click system which offer fast, clean installation and stability.

www.karndean.com

Appearance options Vinyl tiles and planks cover a hugh variety of sizes and shapes and can be mix-and-matched to achieve an infinite number of designs. Current fashions include extra wide and long planks for wood through to very small planks for wood. Border effects can be easy to achieve in LVT. Other notable options include:

• Embossed – this is where the top clear layer of the tile has been

www.krausflooring.co.uk

embossed to create a realistic texture that matches the style of the stone of wood decor. Registered embossed is the most authentic – the texture matches the design so that, for example, a wood knot or hand-scraped element in the wood design can be felt on the surface of the flooring.

• Grouting and grooving – vinyl tiles can be laid with grouting inlay strips or beads of vinyl for addewd realism – and there are acrylic grouts that can be applied. In wood decors, planks are available with v-grooves or bevelled edges between planks for added realism.

www.myvictoria.co.uk

LVT construction

Top coating – A polyurethane or aluminium oxide coating provides protection against scratches and stains and gives enhances anti-slip. Wear layer – This is a key layer - determining the performance and resilience of the product. A 0.3mm (12 mil) wear layer is a good for heavy wear areas. Commercial installations need 0.5mm wear layers or above with 0.7mm at the top end. The wear warranties and guarantees carried by products will be based on this thickness. Decor layer – This is the decor itself - in essence it is a paper- or filmbased photographic inkjet print. (A few LVT floors have the image printed directly to the surface of the floor but this implies less image definition and different wear characteristics.)

PVC Middle Layer(s) Fibre Glass Layer(s) PVC Base Layer

THE STOCKLISTS July 2022

PVC and fibre glass layers – The construction ‘sandwich’ can vary between products but a combination of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) layers for strength and flexibility and fibre glass layers for structural stability may be used. Any click-system profile will be incorporated into these layers. Products often use a combination of recycled vinyl which is cheaper and virgin PVC which lasts longer and is more stable. Rigid core LVT has a solid, less flexible PVC layer with maximum stability which means it can be laid over exisiting, less even flooring without showing imperfections and therefore avoiding wear problems. Base (or backing) layer – The final high density PVC layer varies according to the installation requirement and is designed for taking adhesive or as an ‘underlay’ for loose-lay and click installations. 77

Stocklists: Flooring Fact Sheet from Interfloor

Flooring factsheet Eco-friendly underlay Sustainable underlay

Interfloor ‘Says NO to Waste’

renu® is a game changer. Interfloor’s new underlay meets the concerns of our modern world in reducing waste and being environmentally sustainable.

renu® is a sustainable, recycled carpet underlay and is without question the most sustainable underlay in Interfloor’s long history.

It’s made by bringing together raw materials that we save from going to landfill with some that have a positive effect on the environment.

We have used post-consumer waste, car tyres and plastic bottles in the manufacture of our underlay for many years. But with renu® we have gone even further responding to the aspiration for a fully sustainable product. It’s made from 98% recycled materials, using ethically sourced and genuinely recycled materials, which means keeping waste from going to landfill and is 100% recyclable itself! The main body of the underlay is made of foam reclaimed from recycled soft furnishings, this foam is them mixed with a binding agent and subjected to high temperature steam under high pressure. The backing is made from 100% recycled and unbleached paper and we use vegetable-based inks for printing. The facing film is made from an ethically produced, carbonnegative bio-based film made from sugar cane. The sugar cane actively captures CO2 from the atmosphere whilst at the same time releasing oxygen – making this material not just green, but proactively green. Let’s not forget, the point of underlay is that it feels great and prolongs the life of a new carpet and renu®, being made from highdensity foam and with a thickness of 9mm, is suitable for all areas of the home.

The in-store sales support available to renu® stockists

renu® stockists will be included in the online stockist locator on the Interfloor website.

THE STOCKLISTS July 2022

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

www.floorwise.co.uk

Benefits

Types

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet

PU (polyurethane) foam • This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling.

Poor or old underlay will...

• Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Crumb

Sponge rubber • A more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

PU foam

www.unifloor.nl

Laminate underlay • There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination • A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.

www.underlay.com

Underfloor heating underlay • Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. www.wilsons-carpet-underlays.co.uk

Pre-tackified underlay • A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired. Underlayment for LVT • This provides a smooth surface on which you can glue down immediately. If there is a time or acoustic issue or a problematic underfloor, a stable, smooth dual underlay system will provide the best solution.

THE STOCKLISTS July 2022

CLASSIC

Crumb rubber • Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings).

Felt • This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets.
