Carpet&FlooringReview Tough Choice A new colour palette is behind the relaunch of Cormar Carpet Company’s Primo Choice range. The stain resistant heather collection, originally launched in 2012, has extended its colour bank to 15 shades and been infused with nine new contemporary hues, including Zinc and Light Azore, as well as retaining six of the original best-selling shades. Made from 100% Excellon polypropylene fibre, Primo Choice has all the easy clean, stain resistant and bleach cleanable qualities of Cormar’s other Primo ranges. It is a two-ply yarn, tufted on 10th gauge for a finer look and improved pile density and performance. And from 2019, Primo Choice also comes with Cormar’s increasingly popular 10-year stain and wear warranty. “We had such a great reaction to the relaunch of our Apollo Plus and Primo Ultra collections – both 10th gauge twist piles – so it made sense to reinvigorate this range,” said David Cormack, marketing director at Cormar. “After six years, colour trends have moved on and now there is a demand for a more urban palette of greys and stony neutrals among consumers. And with two weights and price points available, it gives both the retailer and consumer, more choice.” Available in two qualities, ‘Super’ and ‘Elite’, Primo Choice is expected to retail at around £20 per sq metre, for the Super and £23 per sq metre, for the heavier weight Elite. Cormar Carpet Company produces all its carpet ranges from two sites near Bury, Lancashire and through its new regional distribution centre in Hemel Hempstead, with a network of out-bases throughout the UK. Cormar owns its own fleet of over 75 vehicles to ensure a fast, efficient delivery service. As well as servicing its retail customers through a team of over 30 sales representatives, Cormar has an experienced, dedicated sales and customer service office and an industry-leading trade portal which gives retailers 24/7 access to ordering, delivery tracking and online account management. Go wild with style Inspired by the textures and sights of the great outdoors, Wild Luxury is the latest collection of Imprel Opal polyamide carpets from Balta. Shown at the International Open Week and now available for the UK high street, the collection is made of three styles, each offering a quality echoing the varied textures of the wilds. From the shifting sand of endless beaches in Savage Abundance’s 5/64th gauge Saxony pile, to the weathered smooth sandstone of the 1/10th gauge Natural Embrace and the flowing Pampas grass of Bold Indulgence’s 1/8th shaggy berber, Wild Luxury is a range styled by nature. Imprel Opal is Balta’s matt-look polyamide, engineered to bring a wool-like appearance to the softness and resilience of the man-made fibre and gives Wild Luxury carpets that all-important natural appearance. Whether in the fine yarn of Natural Embrace or the chunkiness of Bold Indulgence, Imprel Opal makes for a carpet that provides exceptional quality and suitability throughout the home. “With the Wild Luxury collection, we’re presenting three distinct looks inspired by the great outdoors that allow homeowners to experiment with bold looks for their home.” Says Geert Vanden Bossche, marketing director, Balta, “It’s a family that offers good depth and will provide high-style looks and assured performance – a tempting combination for anyone.” The palettes of each style are rooted in the concept of the natural world: Savage Abundance brings a palette of 14 sand-like neutrals and sea greys, while Natural Embrace brings stone-like greys and rich teals, ochre, plum, terracotta and clay across 18 shades. For the 17 colours of Bold Indulgence, Balta has been inspired by a similar palette of intense natural colours and tonal greys. All carpets in Wild Luxury come with Balta’s TwinBack secondary backing for improved underfoot feel, better stability and easier fitting. T +32 56 62 22 1 www.wildluxury-carpets.com

Flooring high fidelity Altro Ensemble luxury vinyl tiles have been used in hi-fi and home cinema specialist Fidelity Acker & Buck’s flagship Hamburg store. The store concept includes six studios designed by renowned artist Margarita Kriebitzsch, giving Fidelity’s customers a realistic impression of how their chosen home entertainment system could look and sound at home. Each studio features different design and equipment, and there is also a headphone lounge for audio/video installation systems - a comprehensive sound universe. For the 1,000m² of floor space for the studios on two floors, the designer Roman Mundhenk of WildWalls recommended Altro Ensemble modular flooring system, which offers 15dB sound reduction, to Fidelity. The premium floor combines the functional requirements of the studios with their aesthetic and high-quality atmosphere. Fidelity took several months to design and implement the studios, which included testing Altro Ensemble at the studio. This showed its 15dB sound reduction meets the requirement for a noise-reducing environment. “It was very important to us that the floor is absolutely quiet, so that our customers can hear very fine signals undisturbed,” explains Hans-Joachim Acker, Managing Director of Fidelity. “ The room acoustics are excellent.” The low-reflective surfaces, good acoustic properties with 15dB reduction in impact noise, sound transmission, and 2.6mm thickness with added comfort underfoot and durability, make it perfect for reception and general circulation and living areas as well as student accommodation, restaurants and cafés. NEWS The finest fitters need to move fast! The NICF’s hugely popular Fitter of the Year competition is now open for entries and the UK’s finest fitters need to move fast as the deadline for entries is Sunday, March 31. Fitters enter online and need to complete a web questionnaire in order to be considered for selection as one of the semi-finalists. The semi-final takes place at the FITA training centre in Loughborough with the grand final at The Flooring Show in Harrogate in September.

John Wright of Leighton Buzzard was the 2018 winner

The competition, which is sponsored by The Stocklists magazine and other leading trade organisations, changes after this year to alternate between carpet installation in 2019 and LVT – so next year it will be the LVT Fitter of the Year 2020. Fitters who fancy their chances should check out the NICF website for the full details - but you don’t have to be an NICF member to enter. www.nicfltd.org.uk

Wool carpet is cool again! Wilton Royal, from Abingdon Flooring, is making wool carpet cool again with the launch of Balmoral, a thoroughly modern wool-rich twist for today’s eco-conscious homeowner. In a collection of 10 heather shades including wide-ranging greys and modern tones of beige, Balmoral moves the natural appeal of wool firmly into the colour palette made popular by man-made stainresistant and super-soft yarns. Giving wool carpet a new lease of life in a sector it once dominated, Balmoral is an exciting launch not only for Abingdon Flooring, but the sector as a whole.

Effective authenticity Isafe vinyl safety flooring from IVC Commercial, formerly marketed under the Itec Contract Floors brand, has been extensively re-engineered with new technologies designed to improve performance and the authenticity of wood, stone and architectural looks. Now as Isafe 70, the new heterogeneous vinyl flooring provides permanent TRRL36+ Low Potential for Slip and R11 Slip Resistance performance, making it suitable for general areas in a range of environments looking for a surer footing. An ideal floor for walkways, congregation areas, receptions, cafeterias, washrooms, retail spaces and more; Isafe 70 from IVC Commercial features a 0.70mm wear layer for Class 34 Commercial Very Heavy use. All Isafe 70 floors are equipped with IVC’s new HyperGrip polyurethane layer to protect from scratches and marks without affecting slip performance. Improving the cleanability of Isafe 70’s enhanced particle wear layer, the permanent HyperGrip also delivers an improved mattlook, bringing extra-realism to the natural designs found in the collection. With 11 realistic oak looks, ranging from natural through to a complete spectrum of on-trend grey, Isafe 70 Woods can bring the appeal of wood to commercial interiors with a floor surface that’s slip-resistant, lasting and easy to maintain. Available in two and four-metre width options and compatible with Invisiweld for a strong and invisible joint, Isafe 70 heterogeneous vinyl safety flooring is the first new product launched by IVC Commercial, as the Belgian company looks to strengthen its position as Europe’s leading manufacturer of heterogeneous vinyl, LVT and carpet tiles. Martin Peace, sales director, Abingdon Flooring, explains: “We’ve taken the most popular colours for today’s carpets and added these to a great-value 80/20 wool blend to bring a carpet that’s absolutely spot-on for modern homes – Wilton Royal Balmoral is a range where you’ll not find any royal reds or racing greens. Great value for money, the new style breaks the modern-day myth that wool is a more expensive option and is ready to reignite a new generation’s love for this natural and sustainable fibre.” Made in Britain and featuring an 80% wool, 15% PP and 5% PES melt-bond blend for a pinpoint finish and lasting definition, Balmoral’s cut-pile twist is an elegant look that’s suitable for use throughout the home. Abingdon Flooring has also given Balmoral its Soft Fleece Bac for easier fitting and a discernible softer feel on feeler samples, helping to make its wool-rich blend even more tempting. In 40oz (Balmoral - 10-year wear warranty) and 50oz (Balmoral Deluxe - 12-year warranty) qualities and 2.5m, 4m and 5m widths, the carpet has plenty of scope for bringing wool back to home across the country. Wilton Royal Balmoral is now available on a dedicated lectern at a special price of just £49. T 01274 655 694 www.abingdonflooring.co.uk

Carpet&FlooringReview

Feature

Voice of the trade Laurance Bird on his retirement from Carpet Recycling UK Are you happy that the flooring industry is serious now about its environmental responsibilities? The commercial sector, particularly tile suppliers, are fully engaged with customers in taking back fitting offcuts and old tiles. They are supported by recyclers who are finding second life options for tiles.

Where do you feel the industry is still dragging its heels? It would be great to see more efforts directed towards changing the construction of tufted carpets to allow effective and financially sustainable recovery of polymer based materials. We see this gathering momentum in composite plastics but not yet in carpets.

In the domestic sector some forward looking manufacturers such as Cormar have had great success in reducing their environmental footprint, but not all in this sector are engaged.

If you had to single out one thing, what does the industry need to do better? Focus on recovery of end of life carpets along with fitting wastes to demonstrate circularity of sustainable resources. Good examples of this have been achieved with short life exhibition carpets and fibres from tufteds being recycled to felts and equestrian surfaces but much more is needed.

What has pleased you most about the industry’s response to your recycling campaign? Carpet Recycling UK core funders have consistently supported the principles of sustainabilty and have enhanced their business by their actions. Their enthusiasm and leadership has been cascaded down to their retail and flooring contractor customers so that they too have benefited financially and reputationally. What is the single achievement you are personally most proud of? During 2018 passing the milestone of 1 Million Tonnes of carpet diverted from landfill to reuse, recycling and energy recovery, since CRUK was founded ten years ago.

What is the next big environmental challenge for the flooring industry? The flooring industry and carpets in particular need to make their products more recyclable or face potential penalties for non recoverable materials as new regulations are introduced. Take as an example the planned tax on plastic packaging if recycled content is not increased to 30% or more. What’s been the biggest change you have seen over your career? My career has spanned 54 years in textiles of which the last 35 years have been involved in soft flooring. In carpets the reduction of UK manufacturing capacity and the increase in imports was very significant. Alongside this the resilience of the independent retail sector and remaining UK manufacturers has shone through well. Sustainability is now a key factor for all businesses to address. Will more things change in the next 10 years than have changed in the last 10? Yes, as resources become scarcer more valuable products will be modified or changed to meet changing legislative demands and consumer needs. What should you have done differently? Devoted more time to my family. What was the most fun you’ve had in your career? Launching DuPont Stainmaster carpets in UK. What are you most looking forward to doing in the future? Playing an advisory role in research on material recovery, and supporting the growth of the heritage railway industry.

An evangelist for carpet diversion from landfill!

What are you most looking forward to NOT doing in the future? Driving in rush hour conditions which can only get worse. I will use the old routes for more relaxed driving again. If you hadn’t ended up in this industry, what might you have done? My plan was to be a chemical engineer but I ended up as a textile chemist instead.

Marketing insights Future fibres in carpet As consumer trends and needs evolve, it’s reassuring to see continued innovation and investment by the carpet industry. New innovative fibres such as polyester have delivered super softness and convenience, at the same time, we cannot underestimate the longevity of fibres such as wool which show a resurgence in popularity in both fashion and interiors. So, we have taken the opportunity to share views from across the industry. David Cormack, Marketing Director at Cormar Carpet Company shared his thoughts on future fibres for carpet, “We’re constantly looking at ways to bring innovative new products to the market and Gemini, one of our latest collections, is a key example of that.

Victoria Carpets - Shimmer

“It is our first range to be made from 100% Dura polyester, a fibre which is exclusive to Cormar. It has been developed to combine resilience, softness and durability with practicality and stain resistance. It is also manufactured using 10th gauge machinery to give a dense pile surface that’s ideal for all areas of the home.

“developed to combine resilience, softness and durability with practicality and stain resistance” Cormar Carpet Company - Gemini

Victoria Carpets believe that today’s modern consumer demands much more when looking to choose a carpet for their home, though with the new addition of Arcadia to their Easi-Care polyester collection they believe they have it covered. Easi-Care is made from 100% solution dyed polyester and used across three ranges, five pile weight options and two widths, designed to meet consumer demand. The benefits of Victoria’s Easi-Care solution dyed polyester ranges continue to outweigh that of traditional soft polypropylene products. Essentially it is more resilient, so not only do you achieve that soft touch, you also have peace of mind that it will withstand even the most demanding traffic areas of today’s home.

“today’s modern consumer demands much more when looking to choose a carpet for their home” “Market led and in tune with today’s consumers, Gemini meets the demand for softer, more luxurious feeling, premium carpet and contains 13 on trend, plain shades, including a wide range of subtly different greys and neutrals. It also comes with a 10-year stain and wear guarantee.” 36 February 2019

A fine 10th gauge finish and 40oz pile weight, Arcadia really hits the price point for every room in the home. Moving on from Arcadia is their Shimmer range, available in a 45oz and 65oz pile weight, this more traditional twist offers a de-lustered elegant finish. Though if you’re looking for pure indulgence then Victoria recommend Celestial, available in 55oz and 70oz, as it’s their best of the best.

Cavalier Carpets - Silken

“British Wool firmly believe that wool is the original future fibre.... Wool is naturally fire resistant and considered one of the safest fibres for flooring and fabrics” This means British Wool carpet is naturally hard-wearing and easy to care for – increasingly important in today’s busy family homes. There are also other benefits that British Wool is focusing on explaining to consumers. Wool is naturally fire resistant and considered one of the safest fibres for flooring and fabrics. It’s also hypoallergenic, contributing to healthier air indoors by trapping allergens in the top layer of the fibre so instead of floating around and aggravating allergies, they can simply be vacuumed away. continued overleaf...

British Wool - unscoured wool

The sumptuous palette of neutral hues ranges from a timeless white crepe, to soft chiffon greys and the easy to use taupe cravat. Silken is manufactured in the UK, in a 50oz pile weight with an extra heavy domestic rating and is available in 4 and 5 metre widths. This new collection is sure to be a hit with consumers wanting on-trend colour, softness underfoot and easy maintenance.

“Cavalier Carpets new Silken range comes in ten contemporary colours. The 100% stain resistant, 2-ply polyester construction offers a superior combination of outstanding resilience and super soft fibres” British Wool firmly believe that wool is the original future fibre. Designed to protect sheep from all kinds of weather, it’s naturally constructed to last a lifetime. They explain that British wool performs particularly well in carpets because it’s grown specifically to protect British sheep from wet, cold and windy British weather, so it’s naturally more resilient and durable. Wool is composed of proteins, like human hair, giving it a complexity that man-made fibres could never replicate, and offering superior performance characteristics thanks to its natural oils, scaled structure and springy construction. from The Stocklists

Marketing insights Future fibres in carpet continued Adam Carpets - Panache Stripe, Boutique

“We have a strong commitment to the use of British wool in carpet with the famous Brintons blend still being used today” today. The combination of 80% wool with 20% nylon means that our carpets are luxurious to touch but still hardwearing. Wool is natural, renewable and sustainable plus a great insulator of sound and heat. Wool also has hypoallergenic and anti-bacterial properties, so we have always championed this most versatile of fibres.” Expect more communication around the new licensee scheme being released throughout 2019.

This can be seen in their recent collaboration with Little Greene paint company on updating their Castlemead Twist colour palette, as well as the launch of their new Stripes collection for Spring 2019. When it comes to fibre, Managing Director, Chris Adam has a clear vision of future trends, “We trust in wool. It is the oldest and most enduring fibre to be used in carpets, because its strength and beauty have stood the test of time, and the fact it re-grows every year makes it right up to date and relevant for today’s consumers. Wool is a natural fibre which is renewable, sustainable, biodegradable, an excellent insulator and highly resilient, delivering both comfort and durability. At Adam Carpets, we recognise that consumers expect value for money as well as valuing sustainability, and the finest UK wool we select delivers on both fronts”. Savvy support for smart retailers The Stocklists’ annual overview of the UK’s buying groups looks at the various options of each one, including their individual services and USPs. The Metro Group reports it is not the biggest or lowest cost group but provides quality service. It underwent a significant relaunch four years ago and has since consistently won Business Support and Buying Group awards.

SMG has launched its own brands, Pure Carpets and Pure Flooring, and in 2019 will be demonstrating to members and non members alike all of the options that this initiative gives them, as well as all the other financial benefits that group membership brings, it states. Greendale Carpets & Floorings is a Hereford-based, multi-million pound, 140-store member-owned cooperative with a stock of over 2,000 carpet rolls from the main British and continental manufacturers. Run on a “not for profit basis”, negotiated savings are passed onto members and with preferential pricing on most main manufacturer’s products, own labelling is a key ingredient with 200 ranges renamed at colour level. The main Greendale brand is complemented by the upmarket Platinum and budget Nice Price labels from £4.99 to £100 per square metre across all product and fibre types. Additionally, a package of UK Wool twists manufactured exclusively for the group offers outstanding margin opportunities and the ability to retail with confidence.

Metro Group – POS “We offer the widest range of sales and marketing benefits, most importantly lower prices, 200+ Carpet1st own label ranges, website templates and video content, social media marketing, Carpet1st display stands, credit card deals, interest free credit, utility and broadband deals,” it states. “Our unique merchandising service delivers everything from a business card to a shop front, all tailormade to your requirements. We can rebrand your business under your name or use the Carpet1st brand to avoid internet issues. Members have benefited from a £500 free allowance against this service for the last two years. “Your independence remains unchanged, everything we offer is optional, nothing is mandatory. You can take part in as little or as much as you like,” says Metro Group. SMG says it is the largest and most progressive flooring buying group in the UK. With over 380 retail outlets, members benefit from extra discounts, promotions, rebates and preferential terms as well as accessing any product from any of their approved suppliers without the need for a direct account. Members remain completely independent to run their businesses their own way and SMG can offer any level of assistance with marketing and branding as required, as well as guaranteeing more profit to their members’ businesses.

Additional support includes a website, advertising, instore ticketing and membership of the British Independent Retail Association, with a range of support services for independent retailers, and a bi-annual show and dinner for members and suppliers takes place with over 50 suppliers in attendance. ACG says it is dedicated to supporting independent carpet and flooring retailers as a not for profit organisation, funded by an annual subscription which is comfortably offset from the discounts and rebates on offer.

“Pure Carpets” and “Pure Flooring” are SMG’s own brands

The group has negotiated preferential terms with the main industry suppliers and in turn encourages members to support them. Membership has grown to over 310 retail stores nationwide, with members remaining “fiercely independent”.

DOMOTEX 2019 Hannover 2019 Review •

Optimism is antidote to market caution Our guide to some of the highlights at Domotex 2019 A vibrant Domotex delivered on style and enthusiasm at the world’s largest flooring show though the event was tempered by the realities of a tight market in the sector across Europe. But while visitor numbers were down a little and the roll-out of exhibitors was some 200 below the 2018 high of 1,600 stands, the organisers’ research reported that orders taken at the show were in line with the previous year and the amount of display space sold had risen, they said. “Thanks to its strong international drawing power, Domotex serves as the sector’s definitive global marketplace,” said show organiser Dr. Andreas Gruchow of Deutsche Messe. “The positive and optimistic outlook on the 2019 business year that was tangible in the trade fair halls proves the success of this year’s exhibition.” The mixed outlook was reflected in the responses of exhibitors including the UK companies that had made the trip to Hannover with most reporting an encouraging level of interest and quality visitors from around the world. But caution across the flooring market was reflected in a substantial reduction in product development with a noticeably smaller number of truly new innovations compared with the usual level at this event. For British exhibitors and buyers, it was unavoidably all about Brexit and though the overwhelming mood now is that the UK industry expects to weather the storm whatever happens, it became clear repeatedly that manufacturers have been spending precious cash in 2018 on filling warehouses with stock and raw materials in case of disruption, rather than investing in the next idea to tempt consumers. But while re-launches and re-colourings were more common than innovation this year, Domotex is such a large event that there was still plenty to excite the 40,000 visitors from some 60 nations. In this issue, we’re focussing on some of the agenda-setting news and launches from manufacturers who support the UK market and there will be more next month including a trends analysis of what the show reveals about the direction of flooring in 2019. (And more reviews next month plus our trends report.) www.domotex.de

The home of heathers Cormar Carpet Company

Primo Choice has established itself as a go-to heathers range since its launch some six years ago making it one of Cormar’s most successful product introductions ever. But being about the best doesn’t mean you can’t get better!... Cormar has been updating many of its key, flagship ranges – most recently with Home Counties (the first relaunch in the company’s impressive new branding livery) and then Gemini – but the market is likely to be especially enthusiastic about the latest upgrade to Primo Choice given its reliability as a bestseller for heathers. “This was one of our first easy-clean ranges and has enduring popularity,” said Cormar’s Carl Quail. “Now it is right up-to-date with the kind of colours consumers really want.” Primo Choice is introducing nine new colours and retaining six. This 2-ply, tenth gauge carpet is available in two weights and 4 and 5m widths. Cormar’s new MD Tim Eagles (pictured above) took up his new role on January 1 from outside the industry so his visit Domotex was a fast track to find out what’s happening in the flooring sector across Europe. “This huge event gives you a great impression of the energy and innovation that exists in the industry and I am enthusiastic about the role Cormar has as a market leader in this sector to develop still further,” he said.

Sealing in the sound Interfloor Interfloor aren’t keeping quiet about its unique noise-reducing, acoustic underlay innovation! The Decibel Soundseal technology is changing the way floors are built with a specially designed product that is embedded in the construction of the sub-floor itself. Working in partnership with Par Lindstedt of Aprobo, Interfloor’s innovation is an advanced sponge rubber mat that is buried within the subfloor, typically sitting on top of a concrete construction floor but below the screed subfloor. Placing the sound absorbing layer at this level, rather than simply under the primary flooring surface itself has proven to have enhanced acoustic performance. This approach also means that the acoustic layer is part of the building construction itself with increased longevity, independent of different flooring types and services that may be laid above it. Already, more than two million square metres of flooring has been installed using the Decibel Soundseal system in Scandinavia, but Interfloor is now committed to expanding its reach internationally as the flooring system of choice to manage acoustic issues, especially in residential high-rise, hospitality and commercial installations. “There is a growing demand for effective solutions to meet more demanding building legislation and as architects and specifiers are increasingly uncompromising about the need for excellent acoustic performance,” says Interfloor’s CEO John Cooper. “This is a fantastic and well proven system that provides a built-in solution to acoustic problems which has a long life and is independent of the different flooring surfaces that may be laid above it.” Interfloor will be leveraging its strong relationships with architects and specifiers and has been developing its export team to take this technology to the widest possible audience. T 01706 213131 • www.interfloor.com

“There is a growing demand for effective solutions to meet more demanding building legislation and as architects and specifiers are increasingly uncompromising about the need for excellent acoustic performance,” Par Lindstedt of Aprobo Interfloor is building its export team and recently Martin Passauer (far left) has joined to cover the Germanspeaking territories and Yassine Lamraoui for North Africa and the Middle East.

Interfloor’s technology-led approach to serving specialist markets is further demonstrated in its innovative development of flame retardant underlay products. The company has just launched FR6, a sister product to its successful FR7 range of flame retardant underlays which are widely used in hospitality installations. FR6 offers a slightly thinner, denser construction which is particularly suited to commercial office environments. Interfloor now has two products which meet the stringent International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations for use in shipping and cruise liners including Counterflame, a unique, premium underlay made with an unusual latex construction. The chemical composition of this material breaks down under extreme heat to release molecules of water and so it is self-extinguishing. This unique characteristic means it is the only underlay specified by the Ministry of Defence for use in warships. “Interfloor’s expertise and innovation is what has driven the success of our product development, whether we are creating optimal comfort for home consumers or a highly technical solution to meet specialist needs,” says Laura Ashall, marketing director.

Adventurous innovation ts FEBRUARY 2018_FEB18 10/01/2019 Tapibel

09:53 Page 1

Tapibel’s transformation as a design led carpet tile company has really gathered momentum since the installation of its advanced Myriad tufting machine two years ago and 2019 will give the market a real flavour of just what this clever technology is capable of. “We have now had time to see just what we can do with this machine and we are starting to be more adventurous and this is really getting noticed in the marketplace,” says Mike Packwood of Tapibel. “We have seen strong performance in this sector as a result.” The Myriad machine allows individual tuft placement and therefore infinite design opportunities. Some of the first products from this approach were seen last year in Hannover but now the company is the more ambitious and the new Normandy, Earth and Beach ranges launched at Domotex demonstrate how combinations of three and four coloured yarns in one carpet can create striking textured effects that are so on trend at present.

“We have now had time to see just what we can do with this machine and we are starting to be more adventurous and this is really getting noticed in the marketplace,”

Marketed under the Incati brand name, Tapibel is offering 50x50cm tiles, 100x25cm planks and full 4m broadloom and with a confident choice of bold colours, the products are doing increasingly well in the hospitality sector as well as established markets in commercial contracts.

A further demonstration of Tapibel’s designer credentials was also seen for the first time at Domotex in the form of luxury hospitality rugs using high-definition print technology with top quality nylon 6.6 carpet and tufted designs created by the Myriad technology. “These rugs are ideal to enhance an entrance or delineate zones in a hospitality area,” says Mike Packwood. “The well-defined, vibrant colours have excellent resilience in these high performance products.” Tapibel is showcasing the quality of this approach with a gallery of art selections but in fact the technology is completely customisable, matching branding colours and graphics with the ability to print from any high quality artwork supplied. The soft printed rugs will be offered in three sizes initially –2 x 3m, 2 x 2.5m, 1.7 x 2.3m plus bespoke size up to 2m wide. While the rugs from the Myriad design set will be available in bespoke sizes up to 4m width.

The antidote to dull Condor

Condor’s commitment to product development is undimmed in this competitive market and they are lining up a whole range of options for 2019 which will include new polyesters and solutiondyed nylon products but the focus for the first part of the year is on it’s best selling polypropylenes. “We have been busy building the best possible response to the current demands in the market,” says UK sales manager Paul Harris. “It’s always full speed ahead here in bringing forward new products and there’s never a dull day at Condor!” The antidote to dull can be seen in the updates to the flagship polypropylene ranges Eclipse, Pegasus and Emotion which have a new colour bank with contemporary colours including some bolder, fashionable shades. Eclipse and Pegasus are two weights of the same fine tenth gauge carpet with an impressive pin-point finish with a pile a little shorter than Saxony but comfortably soft and it will be available in 16 colours.

“We have been busy building the best possible response to the current demands in the market,” Paul Harris, Manager of UK Sales

2019 will also see the launch of Emotion, a popular and versatile go-anywhere range that is also available in two weights and also mainstream seller Dreamfields will be relaunched with six new colours. But if you really want to brighten up your store, Condor’s iconic Carousel range which is marketed as the “one-stop shop for colour” will be updating its collection of 44 colours. “Everyone needs this range in their store as the complete answer to those customers who just don’t want greys and beige,” says Paul. Focus on fresh Ball & Young There’s a focus on “fresh” at Ball & Young as the company promotes a unique feature of its Cloud 9 underlays to give retailers an added opportunity to secure quality underlays sales to savvy consumers. “Everyone talks about freshening up their product range – with Cloud 9 we do it for real by building a technology into our underlays that actively protects carpets and the families that live on them,” says Ann Shaw. Ultrafresh is an advanced antimicrobial technology integrated into the manufacturing process that provides protection against fungi and bacteria and has deodorising properties. This feature has been introduced across all the Cloud 9 ranges so the company is now going to increase its promotion including point-of-sale and window stickers for retailers. Domotex was also an impressive display of the striking new graphics that Ball and Young has created to promote Cloud 9 including the fireworks exploding over London’s Tower Bridge theme which has been carefully carried through a full range of marketing including a set of new product binders for retailers. Ball & Young’s new CEO Ian William Robb is pictured with Ann Shaw

Ball & Young’s parent company The Vita Group appointed a new CEO on January 1st and Ian William Robb made Ball & Young’s stand at Domotex one of his first appointments to find out more about the business. “The professionalism of this team is outstanding and I can see the opportunity for further investment to continue the innovation that will build on our brand leadership and give customers the best products possible for their needs,” he said. DOMOTEX 2019 review New dimensions in design Brockway Carpets Brockway is British wool carpet manufacturing at its best and the company set out its stand at Domotex to showcase that quality in both design and construction to an international audience. So centre stage was one of the company’s most fashionable flagship ranges, Dimensions – recently re-styled with new colours across the coordinated plains, stripes and heathered options – and beautifully presented at the show with a wide swathe of stripes embedded in a bold, Tomato Red plain. This was a statement floor that would makes exhibitors take notice but would be equally engaging in a smart residential location (and a retailer’s showroom floor!). “The challenge is to be creative and differentiate your ranges and we play to our strengths in terms of design and our exclusive commitment to quality wool in order to reinforce our reputation,” says Shaun Lewis of Brockway (pictured far right with Steve Glover) . “I’m pleased to say that more and more people have got to know us and to appreciate our approach both in the UK and Europe, and we are well placed to respond to a resurgence in the recognition of wool as the fibre of choice for discerning floor buyers,” said Shaun. Sticking to reliability F Ball

F Ball has a relentless commitment to product development throughout the year but the Domotex exhibition gives the UK company a chance to present some of their best new ideas to an international audience. The export market is growing for F Ball who already has an office and warehousing in Singapore and their technical research in problem-solving is highly respected around the world. Two quite different examples were on show in Hanover. First is the new reformulation of Stycco Flex, the highly versatile rapid curing adhesive that is known as the trade’s superglue for its ability to fix cappings, skirting, nosing and trim. In line with F Ball’s eco agenda, Stycco Flex can now fix PVC, avoiding the use for solventbased products.

“The company prides itself on listening to what installers really want to work faster and more effectively,” David Jervis, Product Manager 48 February 2019

The second innovation on display was the new Stopgap P141, a clever textured primer to promote adhesion of Stopgap levelling compounds on non-absorbent sub-floors. It contains a recycled uPVC filler that stays in suspension and dries to a hard textured surface which provides better grip performance. “The company prides itself on listening to what installers really want to work faster and more effectively,” says product manager David Jervis (pictured left). “Then we deliver, with reliable solutions that our customers know they can trust.” T 01538 361633 • www.f-ball.co.uk

Sustainable support Beaulieu Beaulieu Yarns created a buzz in Hannover with the major launch of new sustainable yarns that set the agenda for best practice in high performance fibres with excellent environmental credentials. Beaulieu’s new Resilya yarn family answers the need for a high level of durability, quality and originality in design from the contract market – engineered for the highest standards of resilience and with unique colour capabilities. This product complements Beaulieu’s EqoBalance polyamide product launched last year as the world’s first biomass-balanced yarn which ensures that at the very start of the supply chain, natural renewable raw materials replace fossil resources in the production of polymers processed into yarns. A new name in the market for comfort is Softitude, a solutiondyed nylon yarn with a uniquely effective combination of softness and durability for carpets in the residential and hospital sector which is being offered in uni- and multi-color yarns and with a spectrum of lustre levels.

“Sustainability is a significant consideration, and we look to encourage our customers’ efforts by helping them to create more durable carpets and to reduce their CO2 emission.” Emmanuel Colchen, Global Sales Director

Alive with ideas Lano Lano is alive with ideas and enthusiasm to invest in extending its diverse portfolio of market-leading products from its high-end X Collection of luxury carpets, the innovative technology of SmartStrand, through mainstream polypropylene, to a new concept in grass. “There’s always a lot going on at Lano and we make sure there’s always something new and fresh for every type of customer,” says UK Sales Manager Gary Alp who has thoughtfully tailored the portfolio to meet British trends. The latest developments of Lano’s polypropylene best sellers Startwist and Heathertwist demonstrate the approach with smart new colours that will be well received by UK consumers with sampling going out in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, the ever popular Genius has been reengineered with a softer new yarn as well as undergoing a complete colour refresh. At the top end, Lano were showing off their sumptuous cut pile carpet Evita which is a dense, thirteenth gauge deep nylon fibre which got a fantastic reaction at the show and the company is promising several new luxury launches in the X Collection as the year unfolds. Finally, Lano’s new grass concept makes artificial turf a more accessible sale for retailers and consumers with eye-catching POS displays and a flexible range of four qualities all in multi-width options across 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 metres to cater for everything from a balcony and decking through to hospitality installations and landscaping. Cost and eco consciousness Despite nearly eight out of 10 of the UK’s SMEs actively encouraging their employees to be more environmentally responsible, the cost of goods is still more important than their environmental impact when it comes to procuring products for 76% of business owners. The findings are based on Close Brothers Asset Finance’s quarterly survey of 900 businesses in the UK and Ireland. “These results clearly demonstrate the decisions business owners are faced with every day,” said Neil Davies, CEO, Close Brothers Asset Finance. “On the one hand they really want to be ethical in the purchasing choices they make, but on the other they need to protect their profits. “What is encouraging is that the will is obviously there; as less environmentally damaging products become available and, importantly, affordable, they will be considered by those making the purchasing decisions.” Neil Davies, CEO. Recycling is a priority for 81% of firms, most notably in the engineering sector, where recycling rates rise to 92%. “There are well-known issues with recycling in the UK, including China’s decision to ban foreign waste imports from the start of this year,” said Neil. “But that, along with the public’s increased awareness of the impact of plastic, appears to be accelerating positive changes to the UK’s recycling system, which will make the efforts businesses are making worthwhile.” Close to two thirds (64%) of firms would consider offering employees one day off a year to volunteer for environmental causes. In London, the figure rises to 79%. Business owners are far cooler about home working than volunteering, with only 45% of those polled encouraging working from home as a way to reduce their organisation’s carbon footprint and environmental impact; 48% rejected the notion outright with 7% ‘unsure’. Greater London is the most open to homeworking, with 73% encouraging the practice. T 07736 286 144 www.closebrothers.com

Flooring

Factsheet Adhesive Types Acrylic/Resin: Ideal for plasticized PVC and most modern flooring. Bitumen: A tar-like material, bitumen has a high degree of moisture resistance and is used for damp-proof membranes and installing tiles, wood blocks and mosaics. Epoxy Resin: A two-part chemical curing system that is used in aggressive environments such as conservatories, wet rooms, commercial kitchens and exterior installations. Polyurethane: An adhesive with rapid bonding characteristics, typically used for wood floors.

ADHESIVES

SELECTION CHECKLIST

The criteria to select an adhesive will cover the following points. Larger manufacturers offer detailed guides to select the correct adhesive – even indexing floor manufacturer’s products by name to ensure an accurate match. For accurate and up-to-date information consult the F. Ball Recommended Adhesives Guide. Open Time: The time you have to fit the flooring into the adhesive after which the bond will no longer be ideal. The time until the floor may be walked on should be checked. Odour: Low odour, solvent free and low VOC products are increasingly favoured and now have the same performance characteristics of older products.

Polyvinyl Acetate: Typically used for close fitting joints in timber, laminate floors and panels.

Coverage: How thick and how far can the adhesive be spread.

Tackifier: An adhesive for carpet designed to increase the tackiness – or the tack range – of an adhesive.

Application Method: Different adhesives may be applied by roller, trowel or spray.

Water-based Adhesive: Many different types of adhesives now use water as their carrier to avoid odours and flammability issues which are common with chemical solvents.

Strength: Including how quickly the adhesive will “grab” the floor covering and its strength when fully cured. Underfloor Heating: A lot of modern adhesives are suitable for use with underfloor heating but

this criteria must be checked where appropriate. Subfloor: What surface will the adhesive stick to most effectively including concrete, sand cement screeds, levelling compounds, plywood and chipboard. Whilst there are multi-purpose adhesives, specialist products will be better suited to certain surfaces. The porosity of the floor is a key determinant of the type of adhesive to be used and its performance during installation. Special Performance: Certain adhesives are more suitable for damp, humid or high temperature environments. Air Quality and the Environment: The old wisdom that the more it smells, the better it sticks is no longer acceptable to modern consumers and solvent-based products are increasingly replaced by water-based adhesives.

Isn’t it time for a change of tack.

Tip Sheared

Tufted With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILE

Berber – Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop. Level loop – When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop – The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.

BONDED

Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally used for commercial carpet tiles. from The Stocklists

The yarn is tightly twisted of the finest carpets which are used for and often heatset to retain this feature and prestigious installations. the result is a versatile, textured finish that is Axminster ideal for plain colours. The pile of the carpet is inserted into the Velvet – Velvet textures (sometimes called backing as it is woven and cut to length, ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pile creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is surface. The process locks in the fibre then sheared to give a smooth finish. occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOP

When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home. Shag pile – Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface can flatten easily and may lack durability.

Wilton Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability. Flat weave Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.w February 2019 53

Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale – with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high customer satisfaction levels. The Carpet Foundation and its Consumer Code of Practice approved by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) recommend that new carpet underlay is bought with every new carpet.

www.interfloor.com

Many consumers are now aware of the benefits of underlay but more needs to be done to provide information about the different types available and their suitability for different areas of the home. Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results. Some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units and foot testers.

Benefits

Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet Poor or old underlay will...

• Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

Sponge rubber

Combination

Crumb

PU foam

www.interfloor.com

Types

PU (polyurethane) foam This is now the market’s most popular underlay and is typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options and densities and provides great insulation – and its light weight helps handling. Sponge rubber Introduced in the 1950s, this is a more traditionally manufactured underlay available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention.

www.carpenterunderlay.co.uk

Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall – offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-floor. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating of 2.5 can be used – which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

www.underlay.com

Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) undelay is made from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets. Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired.

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter

• shedding • pulled loops

Fading on Wool Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics. A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).

Soiling Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common: Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Colour matching Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’. This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly. Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure.

A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching.

It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.

N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.

Static

Sprouting Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out. 60

Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions. Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment. THE STOCKLISTS February 2019

• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

Flattening

Shedding

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.

Shading

Indentations

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

Pile Reversal Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. The underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet. The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Pulling Loops

Samples

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.

The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Flooring factsheet Buying Groups Pick the right one How to decide whether to join a buying group – and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently • Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member of the committee

Why join? Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving independents the extra edge they need to compete effectively with the retail park chains. More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of the several buying groups which operate in our sector and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a ‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements,

any fees that would relate to your membership, how the bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a consultation to estimate your potential savings

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident, the resistance to the buying group concept among nonmembers appears to be centred on fears of surrendering some control to a committee – and most particularly compromising long-established relationships and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling across a broad range of products is likely to improve margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefits Increase margins • Group purchases to get beneficial rates • Rebates • Exclusive higher-margin products • Special promotions

ne of the key reasons to join a buying group is to O benefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyer from manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates are passed on to members varies between groups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll need to work out how this compares with discounts you have already negotiated locally with preferred suppliers. Access professional services • Business and financial services • IT and internet support • Training and workshops • Professional bodies Some buying groups offer an excellent range of other services which may be valuable to your business. Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loans and insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offering marketing packages, software systems to help you run your business operations and customised websites ready to use. Relationships with professional and training organisations can also offer discounts. THE STOCKLISTS February 2019

Increase sales

• Best of both worlds’ proposition • Wider ranges and exclusive products • POS, displays and merchandising support

Your customers will like the proposition that you are independent but with the buying power of a group – this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ with personal service and competitive pricing. Most groups will also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with pointof-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholding may also be on offer. Network with other independents • Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers • Regular meetings and supplier presentations • Regional workshops • Helpline A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment of being independent but not alone out there on the High Street. Groups hold regular meetings and some have their own trade shows, regional meetings and workshops to help you develop your business. The network gives you someone to call when you need advice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.
