Calling creative types THE Great Gippsland Gatescape, Gippsland Arts Festival 2013 is about to be launched. This year the theme is “S p a c e” and the possibilities are endless: head space, my space, outer space, inner space, crazy space, serene space. The feature event is The Great Gippsland Gatescape and everyone is invited to get involved and be in the running for some super prizes. Coordinator for the Gatescape project is arts identity, Janice Orchard. “Make your garden gate, farm gate, school gate, yard gate, in fact any gate, your blank canvas. Make it stand out from the crowd with your creative ideas and ingenuity,” she said. “You may want to partner with a community group. You could also partner with a winery, restaurant, accommodation, or other arts event to put together a deal that means our visitors just have to stay longer to enjoy the Bass Coast region!” Your creations will be promoted on the Creative Gippsland website, the Bass Coast Shire website

as well as in a brochure for the events and exhibitions taking place during the month of May as part of The Great Gippsland Gatescape, Gippsland Arts Festival 2013 “S p a c e”. For more information please contact Bass Coast

Loch’s long Lent

THREE crosses strategically placed in the paddock to the north of St Vincent’s Catholic Church in Loch are exposing South Gippsland Highway motorists to an important message.

Staying longer: Meeniyan Art Gallery has extended the exhibition of Russell Petherbridge’s sculptures until April 8 due to popular demand. Russell’s sculptures are crafted from metal, using only the most basic hand tools, and this exhibition is a selection of the extraordinary work he created in his career spanning 45 years. Some sculptures are mobiles you can play with, much to the delight of children and parents alike. The exhibition will be open over Easter holidays. Russell is pictured at the exhibition opening with his sculpture Sophia.

According to Di Stewart, a dedicated member of the Loch congregation, the crosses are to be seen both day and night to remind people of what Lent is all about. “This is about preparing for the death of Jesus and his resurrection. Lent is not just about Easter holidays, Easter eggs and hot cross buns,” she said.

Night-time delight: the lit up crosses create an eerie effect at night, helping to remind people that Lent is not just about Easter eggs.

EASTER SUNRISE SERVICE 7am, 31 March at EAGLES NEST

Scary sight: in scenes reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic, The Birds, corellas gathered in the Leongatha CBD last week. If you were paranoid or an avid film buff, you may have believed they were planning an attack. Whatever their true intention, they made an awful lot of noise and mess.
