Phillip Island Golf Club’s junior pennant title THE South Gippsland District Golf Association’s Junior Pennant season was played out at Leongatha Golf Club last Sunday. With the final qualifying round played in the morning, the pressure was on to see which two clubs were to play off in the final following the lunch break. At the end of the morning rounds, Phillip Island, who were unbeaten for the season headed the ladder, whilst second was claimed by Leongatha who were loaned a player from Aussie Golf Ranch. Both clubs retained the same teams for the final. However it was a bit unfortunate that Leongatha had to forfeit one game for the final due to one of their team members breaking an arm earlier in the week. By the half way mark, it was too close to call with Phillip Island leading three matches to two. The final of the matches to pass through the nine saw Phillip Island a mere one up. The back nine saw Phillip Island assert their dominance of the competition by winning
the four matches to claim the pennant. The remaining match was won by Korumburra’s Steve Bromby. The final result was Phillip Island 4 defeating Leongatha 1. The results of all matches were: Chris Lawrence (match forfeited) 10/8; Christian Bennett d Jeremy McCarthy 19th; Ben Inch d Nick Cairns 2/1; Ben Clarke lost to Ben Matthews 2/1; Scott Fullarton d Reanna Matthews 2/1. The first named player in each result is from Phillip Island Golf Club. The South Gippsland Junior committee also took the opportunity to present two of their annual awards at the pennant final presentations. The 2009 Junior Golfer of the Year award was taken out by Reanna Matthews from Leongatha Golf Club, whilst the South Gippsland ‘Rising Star’ award went to Jesse Cicala from Wonthaggi. There is no doubt both juniors are showing considerable talent and have a bright future.
