THE latest to hit this typhoon-prone country of 114 million people has raised once more the bulletin board on how the national government and local government units respond to any devastating weather disturbance.
Two days after leaving the country, Typhoon Egay’s havoc left at least 25 people dead, 13 injured and 20 others missing, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
Egay destroyed rice, corn, highvalue crops, livestock, and poultry as well as agricultural facilities and fishing paraphernalia, according to officials.
Corn damage accounted for 47.5 percent of the total with P648.2 million, hitting 38,401 metric tons of produce in 58,497 hectares of land. Damage to agriculture has been estimated at P833,889,970.48, livestock at P23,762,020 and infrastructure at P1,191,137,926.36, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said.
A total 76,093 farmers and fisherfolk and 91,651.56 hectares of crops were affected, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council also said.
The damage due to the combined effects of Egay and the southwest monsoon breached the P5-billion mark, the Office of the Civil Defense said.
Latest figures showed the damage to infrastructure is pegged at P3.5 billion, while damage to agriculture so far is at P1.9

In face of all this, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. commended the national government and local government units for their joint efforts to ensure immediate and proper disaster response in areas affected by Egay which exited last weekend.
Instance, during the distribution of various government assistance to typhoon victims in Bangued, Abra, the President also expressed elation that displaced families temporarily sheltered in evacuation centers were safe and getting the necessary assistance from the government.
He gave assurances the government would also help typhoon victims staying outside the evacuation centers.
“The disaster response teams of the LGUs and the national government are doing a good job. The national and local governments have good communication line. That’s why I am optimistic that we will soon be able to restore the services needed,” the President said.
The President led the distribution of food packs and P10,000 worth of cash assistance per family from the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
He also turned over agricultural assistance from the Department of Agriculture to farmers, as well as monetary aid from the Office of the President to LGUs in the Cordillera region. At the onset of the typhoon, President Marcos ordered a whole-of-nation approach and directed all concerned government agencies to ensure the rehabilitation of the affected families.
