Market jumps; SM Prime advances T HE stock market sustained its rally Tuesday, with select blue chip issues leading the new surge on improving economic prospects.

The Philippine Stock Exchange Index jumped 133.86 points, or 1.7 percent, to 7,885.97 on a value turnover of P8.7 billion. Gainers beat losers, 110 to 91, with 47 issues unchanged. SM Prime Holdings Inc. of retail tycoon Henry Sy Sr. surged 7.4 percent to P38.30, while major property developer Ayala Land Inc. advanced 3 percent to P42.25. MacroAsia Corp., which provides aviation-related services, climbed 5 percent to P27.50, while Wilcon Depot Inc. rose 2.2 percent to P11.82.

But Asian markets mostly fell on Tuesday as trade moves back into view with China and the US holding more high-level talks this week, while oil prices held gains as tensions in the Middle East simmer. Hong Kong was one percent lower after racking up gains of more than five percent over the previous six sessions, while Tokyo ended 0.2 percent down. Sydney shed 0.6 percent, Singapore fell 0.4 percent and Seoul sank 0.7 percent, with Wellington, Taipei, Bangkok and Jakarta also lower. However, there were gains in Shanghai and Kuala Lumpur. And Mumbai’s Sensex jumped 0.6 percent as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP looked on course to win a key state election just a year ahead of national polls. A recent run-up in equities over the past week has also led to profit-taking,

with Hong Kong hit after six straight days of gains. US markets rose again as Chinese Vice Premier Liu He—President Xi Jinping’s right-hand man on economic issues—headed to Washington on Tuesday for a new round of talks aimed at heading off a trade war between the economic giants. There are hopes the two sides can hammer out an agreement to end a spat that has seen both sides threaten tariffs on billions of dollars of goods. Donald Trump’s call to help get Chinese telecom equipment maker ZTE “back into business fast” soothed nerves, while Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said Monday he was exploring “alternative remedies” for the firm, which was in April banned from buying crucial US technology for seven years. “China is reportedly close to remov-

ing tariffs on agricultural products in exchange for relief for ZTE,” said Stephen Innes, head of Asia-Pacific trade at OANDA. “It helps explain why President Trump said he’d work with President Xi on this company.” The talks come as US officials try to reach agreements with Canada and Mexico on revising their three-way trade pact, while EU steel tariff exemptions are due to end on June 1. Concerns about the already tinderbox Middle East have helped put upward pressure on oil prices, with deadly clashes in Gaza during the opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem coming less than a week after Trump ripped up the Iran nuclear deal. “In general, the market is wholly focused on the hornet’s nest in the Middle East that is an accident waiting to happen,” Innes added. AGI posted net income of P3.5b in first quarter By Jenniffer B. Austria ALLIANCE Global Group Inc. of tycoon Andrew Tan said net income in the first quarter of 2018 inched up 1 percent to P3.5 billion on year after higher interest charges and unrealized foreign exchange losses tempered the gains of the property, liquor and fastfood businesses. AGI said in a disclosure to the stock exchange first-quarter revenues rose 5 percent to P35.3 billion from the year ago level of P33.7 billion as all of the group’s major subsidiaries delivered a good performance, led by Megaworld Corp., Emperador Inc., Golden Arches Development Corp. and Travellers International Hotel Group Inc. “Our operating performance in the first quarter 2018 remained stable, attributed to the hefty investments we continue to pour into our various businesses as part of our long-term growth strategy,” AGI president Kingson Sian said. Megaworld reported an attributable net income of P3.2 billion in the first quarter, up 11 percent year-on-year. Consolidated revenues rose 9 percent to P13.1 billion, boosted by a 17-percent growth in rental income to P3.4 billion and a 6-percent improvement in residential revenues to P8.8 billion. Liquor unit Emperador registered an attributable net income of P1.6 billion in the first quarter, up 6 percent, after consolidated revenues increased 8.5 percent to P9.7 billion. Whisky revenues rose 13 percent year-on-year, while brandy revenues climbed 6 percent from a year ago. TIHGI, owner and operator of Resorts World Manila, registered a 28.2-percent decline in net income to P444 million on lower gross gaming revenues. The decrease in gross gaming revenues was due to lower revenue contribution from the non-VIP segment as a result of lesser gaming capacity and despite a 22-percent growth from the VIP segment.

JG Summit’s Q1 net profit fell to P4.8b JG SUMMIT Holdings Inc., the listed holding company of the Gokongwei Group, posted a 35.8-precent decline in first quarter net income to P4.8 billion on weaker earnings from the petrochemicals and food businesses, coupled with foreign exchange losses due to weaker peso. Core net income, which excludes non-operating and non-recurring items, amounted to P6.35 billion, down 22.9 percent from P8.23 billion in the same period a year ago. The group’s consolidated margins in the first three months of 2018 were also diluted by rising input costs given the inflationary pressures and weaker peso. First-quarter consolidated revenues, however, rose 4.7 percent to P70.6 billion from P67.51 billion on year, according to JG Summit’s financial report filed with the Philippine Stock Exchange. “Going through the business cycle is indeed tough but we are confident that JG Summit can withstand the volatilities in foreign exchange rates and commodity prices, and ultimately overcome these challenges as we continue to maintain a well-diversified portfolio with a balanced income stream and healthy source of recurring cash flows,” JG Summit president and chief executive Officer Lance Gokongwei said. Net income of the group’s food manufacturing unit, Universal Robina Corp., declined 12.4 percent to P2.95 billion, while revenues inched up 1.6 percent to P31.19 billion. Airline business Cebu Air booked a 12-percent increase in first-quarter net income to P1.28 billion as total revenues rose 8.3 percent to P18.2 due to a 10 percent increase in the average fares Net income of property unit Robinsons Land Corp. increased 12 percent to P1.5 billion on the back of a 17-percent hike in revenues to P6.4 billion. The group petrochemical business registered a 65.5-percent decline in first-quarter net income to P826.3 million, after revenues fell 3.2 percent to P10.4 billion on lower sales volume. Jenniffer B.
