NBA: Refs missed late KD fouls, 1 by LeBron
Diaz is TOYM awardee
NEW YORK—An NBA “last two minutes” game report reviewing referee calls released Tuesday said officials missed two late Kevin Durant fouls and another by LeBron James in a controversial finish Monday. Defending champion Golden State defeated Cleveland 99-92 in a Christmas rematch of the past three NBA Finals. It also marked the third year in a row the teams have played on the holiday. James complained about being fouled twice by Durant on late drives to the basket that were not whistled as violations, leading to the Warriors taking over the ball and the Cavaliers unable to reach the free throw line down the stretch. Durant, according to the league, fouled James twice but was incorrectly not called for a violation, James complaining in vain each

time he was fouled. The first time, the referee review found Durant made forearm contact to James that affected his speed, quickness, balance and rhythm. The second time, Durant struck the arm and body of James, affecting the Cleveland star’s shot, which Durant blocked. “He fouled me twice,” James said. “But, whatever. What are you going to do about it?” The review also said Durant had fouled James seconds earlier when James was ruled to have lost the ball out of bounds. The league also said James should have been called for a foul on Golden State’s Draymond Green with 33 seconds remaining, saying James held the arm and jersey of the Warriors forward, impeding his chance to grab the rebound. Diaz created a big bang when she snared the silver medal in the women’s 53-kg weightlifting event in Rio Olympics in 2016. Just when everybody thought she had already reached her peak and would slowly fade away, she made the country proud again by bagging the bronze medal in the same event of the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Turkmenistan last September. Showing that she remains a force to reckon with in her sport, the proud Zam-

But it’s not just her achievements in the competitive arena that set her apart from the rest, she showed her big heart by putting up the Hidilyn Diaz Weightlifting Gym to develop young talents that may want to follow in her footsteps. “It’s my way of giving back to those who want

Els still trying to qualify for Masters WASHINGTON—Fourtime major winner Ernie Els clarified his status for the 2018 Masters on Tuesday, saying he is still working to qualify after receving an honorary invitation to Augusta National next April. Els tweeted on Sunday “Thank you for a Great Xmas present! @TheMasters Can’t wait!” and multiple reports said Els had received a special invitation to compete in next year’s tournament. A five-year qualifying spot in the Masters from his 2012 British Open triumph ended this year for the 48-year-old South African. Els received an honorary invitation to appear at Augusta National during Masters week in 2018 rather than being granted an automatic spot in the field for the year’s first major championship. “Wanted to clarify my excitement getting an invite from @TheMasters. Work continues to qualify to compete!” Els tweeted Tuesday. Honorary invitees are given such perks as clubhouse access and tournament badges and in past years had been permitted into the Par-3 Contest and onto the course for practice rounds.

Mirotic powers Bulls past Bucks, 115-106 LOS ANGELES—Chicago forward Nikola Mirotic came off the bench to score 24 points and spark the visiting Bulls over Milwaukee 115-106 in an NBA matchup Tuesday. The 26-year-old Montenegroborn Spaniard made 9-of-18 from the floor, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range, and grabbed eight rebounds to spark the Bulls to their 11th win in 33 games. “Great game by us. We really stepped up,” Mirotic said. “We’re moving in the right direction.” G reek st ar Gian n is A ntetokou n mpo led the Bucks (17-15) with 28 poi nts. “We executed really good against
Giannis,” Mirotic said. “Offensively they really found me. We were pumped up. Defensively we rebounded really well. Offensively we need to keep improving.” J.J. Barea led Dallas with 20 points and Dirk Nowitzki added 18 as the Mavericks upset visiting Toronto 98-93. The Mavericks took only their third win in 11 games to stand 10-25, still the worst record in the Western Conference. The Raptors, led by Kirk Lowry’s 23 points, saw their six-game win streak snapped and fell to 23-9 with just their second loss in 14 games. Raptors coach Dwane Casey lamented his club shooting only 33.7
percent from the floor. “None of us came out in the right disposition, ready to compete,” Raptors coach Dwane Casey said. “Any time you shoot 33 percent you’re not going to beat too many people in the league. “Defensively, I thought we tried to lock it down the stretch. But again, the way they started the game going coast-to-coast, we were still on Christmas break.” Tobias Harris scored 30 points, 26 of them in the first half, and the Detroit Pistons routed visiting Indiana 107-83. Andre Drummond added 21 points and 18 rebounds for the Pistons, who won for the fifth time in six games. AFP
Monsalve, Uy grab 2-shot lead in National Doubles RYAN Monsalve and Lanz Uy combined for nine birdies and dominated the opening four-ball format with a 59 to seize a two-stroke lead over Paolo Wong and Don Petil in the National Doubles Amateur Golf Championship at Camp Aguinaldo Golf Club in QC yesterday. Monsalve and Uy, who yielded the overall crown to Carl Corpus and Yuto Katsuragawa last year, broke away from a four-way tie after nine holes with five birdies at the backside of the par-68 layout, capping their romp with back-to-back birdies for a 3128 card in best ball. They hope to keep their charge as play shifts to aggregate today with the final round tomorrow to feature the tougher two-ball, foursome (alternate shot) format. “We played pressure-free throughout. It’s been smooth and quite easy since even if one gets into trouble, the other will step up and save the hole, We just enjoyed it,” said Monsalve, whose partnership with Uy netted them

the Group I title in last year’s staging of the season-ending tournament organized and conducted by the National Golf Association of the Philippines and sponsored by the MVP Sports Foundation. Wong and Petil, who matched Monsalve and Uy’s 31 start, actually grabbed the lead with three straight birdies to start their backside drive but the duo slowed down and missed a couple of birdie chances, settling for a 30 and dropping to second instead with a seven-under 61. Lester Lagman and Gab Manotoc also carded an opening 31 and birdied Nos. 11, 12 and 14 but fumbled with a bogey on No. 14 and slipped to third with a 62 in the premier division. Many-time national champion Rupert Zaragosa and Adrian Romero also failed to sustain their hot 31 start with a birdie-bogey stint in the last nine holes and fell five strokes off the pace at 64.
