Durham Region Federation of Agriculture
The Durham Region Federation of Agriculture (DRFA) an affiliate of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) is a member based farm organization , led by a volunteer board who advocates on behalf and for the interests of the farm families and agribusinesses of Durham.
The DRFA has representation on several advisory committees which provide input to our local decision makers. The local Durham agriculture perspective is communicated as well as the impact issues may have on our farm business members.
The DRFA meets on the 3rd Tuesday of most months throughout the year. Some upcoming topics for 2025 include: land use planning and farmland preservation, farm business succession &
transition planning, On Farm Diversified Uses, emergency services for rural & farm residents.

Farms can be very complicated to get financed sometimes. With one of our preferred farm lenders, they send a farm appraiser to value the entire operation and then loan based on that amount. Having a lender that understands agri-business is key because as your operation grows and new projects arise or more capital is needed, they will lend accordingly.
Often times the market garden type farms are located near urban centres, now that the equipment is
sold, the farm can be marketed to the strongest buyer pool, ie- a land banker or developer (a land banker buys and holds land that is close to development, they often pay a premium over straight farm land values, knowing that their investment will grow and some day be sold to a developer.
