SPORT

Tennisathon On the 29th January 2022, all houses had the opportunity to take part in the Tennisathon, a 24hour charity sporting event that raised money for Bright Ideas for Tennis. I interviewed Mr Gent, Head of Tennis, about the event.

hours sleep after leaving the younger staff to supervise the night-shift, I went back at around quarter to six and Wargrave were buzzing with all the boys running around the sports hall. It could’ve been anytime, day or night, like an airport, 24-hours on the go.

Hi, Mr Gent. What was the event like?

We played for a charity called Bright Ideas for Tennis which supports the wider participation in tennis, especially for disabilities, in the local area. We first began relations with them last autumn when we went to play their own 24 hour tennis tournament with a number of other schools at the National Tennis Centre. The idea came from that and we thought we could run our own.

The key thing was trying to get the whole school involved, which is why we divided it up into sections per house.

That’s great. Do you think there are going to be any more events like this in the future?

Well, it was very popular and I think that it might become an annual thing but we will have to see if people would like that.

Miguel Santos (Cpt of Boys’ Tennis) wrote: The event brought people from different year groups and skills together. We had a fantastic time and many people volunteered for the night shifts when they heard it was for charity.

Maia Mountain (Cpt of Girls’ Tennis) wrote: It was amazing to see people of all ages and abilities join together for such a great cause in such a unique way. We had a great time planning and running the event and hopefully it’s the first of many.

Why choose Bright Ideas for Tennis to support?

They are a very well known charity and their ethos was something that a lot of the tennis squad felt was very attractive and appropriate by widening participation. Their focus on disabilities and efforts to plough tennis back into the local area was also extremely important and what a lot of the squad felt very strongly about.

What was your favourite part of the day?

I think just seeing the buzz and the excitement. I got a few 3

A Westminster Dictionary You only have to glance at the news to be bombarded with political jargon from every angle.

So, what are they really talking about?



Doublespeak: Language distor ting the meaning of words to make the truth more palatable.

Firehose of falsehood: Messages br oadcast r apidly and repetitively through multiple channels without regard for truth or consistency.



Flag-waving: Attempting to justify actions on the grounds that they are patriotic.

Gish gallop: Bombar ding an opponent with obnoxiously complex questions in order to make it appear as if they don’t know what they are talking about.



Glittering generalities: Emotionally appealing words applied without concrete argument or analysis

Paltering: The active use of selective tr uthful statements to mislead.

Status Quo: The cur r ent or r ecent state of things, usually defended by those who are resistant to change in terms of culture, society and organisation.

Dead Cat Strategy 

This term refers to the introduction of a dramatic, shocking or sensationalist topic to divert attention away from a more damaging topic.



E.g. PM Boris Johnson reducing and eventually removing Covid-19 restrictions, perhaps in a desperate bid to distract from ‘partygate’.

Whataboutism 



Technique used during discussions attempting to discredit an opponent’s position by calling them out for hypocrisy rather than directly refuting or disproving the argument.

E.g. Johnson making allegations against Sir Keir Starmer about his supposed failure to prosecute notorious paedophile Jimmy Saville. (No evidence has ever been found to support these claims.)

Pork Barrel 

The use of government funds to indirectly buy support, such as overspending on infrastructure and giving the contracts to allies.



E.g. £1 billion in contracts given to ‘friends and donors’ of the Conservative Party since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Meet Lily Harley As we approach the end of the netball season, I thought it was appropriate to interview the captain of the Girls First Team, Lily Harley. She told me all about the team, the season and her aspirations for the future.

Who would you say is your sporting hero?

My sporting hero has got to be Eleanor Cardwell.

She is diligent and pragmatic in all areas and elements of her game. Her grit and determination are qualities that I aspire to have.

Are there any sports you’ve never done that you want to try?

I have never tried skiing!

Me neither! What do you see yourself accomplishing in the next five years?

Hi Lily, how do you think the team would describe you?

In the next five years, I hope to be playing for Leeds Rhinos as I travel north for university. I also aspire to be putting on an England Roses dress at some point in the future.

What are the highlights in your sporting career?

I think that my team might describe me as competi- The highlights in my sporting career are playing in the U15 England Netball Tournament and my recent tive but very motivating. success of starting as goal-attack (GA) for U19 London Pulse NPL. That’s true! As this is your final season in the Eastbourne dress, how would you say the season has gone so far?

The season so far has been extremely promising.

SISNA was successful. We finished 4th out of sixteen teams and had some very promising wins.

However, more challenging games such as Brighton and Bede’s are yet to come!

So there are definitely some tough games ahead then! How do you feel about being selected as Netball Captain?

Being selected as captain has been nothing but a privilege. The squad is full of my closest friends and I enjoy watching everyone progress.

MUSIC

For a few this event would have been their last…

Sav Winston (Year 13), Sasha Rosanov (Year 13) and Sacha Hood (Year 13) all sang their hearts out and continued to show off the Nugent girls’ dazzling skills!

This night, as many would know, is not an easy event to coordinate so a very special well done and thank you to Tom Williams and all the teachers involved for being able to pull this night together. It was truly music to everyone’s ears.

The live band, of course, could not go without mention as they created masterpieces which extracted the real life and soul of music. A immense thank you to everyone behind the scenes of this too. Musical creations like these are not easy to create out of nowhere!

What’s next? Many of the audience members walked away wanting more! Luckily, this array of talent can be found on Spotify if you want to hear more. Just simply type in “Eastbourne College” and you will get to discover the musical genius from the past, present and, as the Live Lounge clearly showed, our future. Incredible!

‘London Archived’ Leander Walters, a Year Twelve pupil in Wargrave House, recently displayed seventeen of his photographs in the foyer of the JWA building. This exhibition was called ‘London Archived’.

Leander created the exhibition as part of his Skills Development Plan for Gold Arts Award. This qualification is open to young people aged 11 to 25, and once completed is worth sixteen points (the equivalent of half an A-Level) on the UCAS tariff.

Each of the photographs was taken somewhere in London, with the locations varying from Covent Garden to Chinatown to Shoreditch. I found that all of the shots had a slightly dark, dangerous ambience to them, conveying a side of London that you wouldn’t find on a postcard. This was part of their appeal for me.

How did you get into photography and when?

‘The mixture of policemen and members of the public in this Jewish bakery in east London, Shoreditch reminds us that law enforcement aren’t just separate from us, they too go about their daily lives like you and I.’ When I found out that Leander was running this exhibition as a Maths, French and Geography A-Level pupil (and not doing photography), I was 8

I got into it about a year ago, when I was looking at old pictures my grandad had from family holidays. I started asking questions, and I became fascinated by the process of film. One day when I visited he gave me a point and shoot camera, which is what I shot my first roll on. And I just loved it. You have to focus a lot on the composition you make; every shot matters more. You want the roll to come out well, so you end up becoming more aware of your surroundings. And then I developed the skill by watching videos about film compositions from the 80s, reading the Kodak books, and just taking photos!

MEDIA people move around, this will all influence the final composition. But I don’t go out with a set theme in my head. I see what happens. Sometimes, I’ll shoot barely anything, sometimes I’ll shoot a lot. I don’t like to feel restricted.

Do you have any opinions on the current resurgence of disposable film cameras?

I think it’s great! You could argue that disposable cameras have economic and environmental downsides… But they’re easy to use, and they’re allowing people to enjoy the more tactile experience that film has to offer. It is the wait for the picture that makes it so special.

What type of film did you use?

The main film I used was the Ilford Delta 3200, or the black and white one. However, I also used Fuji film C200, a bog-standard commercial film, and Lamography Metropolis which helped to create the dim, urban, sombre look.

Tell me about your process in creating your compositions…

There’s no set way that I do it. I like to go to a location which provides inspiration for me. And then the way that the weather and the light changes, the way 9

HOUSE CONCERT REVIEW

Reeves House Concert The Reeves House Concert took place on Saturday, 5th of March. Parents, guardians, pupils and family were welcomed to drinks before sitting down in the JWA to watch the first Reeves revue in years. The concer t began with an amazingly edited video introducing the compares of the night: Ben Beaton, Will Cutler and Nasim Bellagnaoui. The hilarious trio started off the night with a joke which earned them many laughs, kickstarting the first three acts of the night.

Year 9 showed off their slightly unbalanced ballet skills The first act of the concert was the Year 9s and their rendition of Swan Lake, kitted out in neon tutus they showed off their slightly unbalanced ballet skills, with two of the boys even lifting another boy up as part of the dance. The next act was a drama piece performed by Billy Mannion and Noah Gould and displayed the Year 10s’ fantastic acting skills.

Other individual performances included Zizie Ndlovu singing, Charlie Maidens also singing, Seb Pearson and Zizie wowing the audience with their saxophone performance, a Year 10 acapella group and a phobias sketch performed by a group of Year 10, 11 and 13.

The Year 10 sketch was a highlight of the night with the boys performing a sketch of Take Me Out. The boys all dressed up in dresses with Noah being the presenter. The act was simply hilarious with all

of the Year 10s putting in a huge amount of effort.

The Year 11 video again showcased Zizie’s acting skills as he played the detective in a murder mystery of ‘Who Killed Mr McVeigh?’.

There seemed to be a theme with the boys dressing up in dresses as the Year 12s came to the stage for their dance. It was split up into three groups with the first group doing a medley of tiktok songs. The second group was lead by Ben Van Noort who was dressed as Elton John, while the rest were dressed in silver shirts and flares. The final dance consisted of four Year 12s who started off with a slow dance, with two of the four dressed up in dresses. The lighting quickly changed, however, so they could make a quick change into neon clothes to do a slightly more upbeat dance.

An incredible £400 was raised for the Ukraine emergency appeal The penultimate act was the Year 13 video which was titled ‘Who Stole Jay’s Moped?’. The editing of the video was incredibly well done which made the video even funnier. The final act of the night was the house song of ‘Slow Hands’ which was sung well by all the boys. A huge congratulations goes to Mr McVeigh for putting the whole thing together, and all of the boys, especially Ben, Will and Nas, for bringing the night together by comparing.

Another well done is in order as an incredible £400 was raised for the Ukraine emergency appeal.

RECIPES

Easter Egg Blondies The Stag’s very own Recipe Queen, Tiggy Tutt, has found you the perfect Easter treat.

the mixture into the melted chocolate and butter mixture along with the vanilla. Carefully fold in the rest of the egg mixture until smooth, then fold in the flour, baking powder and a pinch of salt until everything is combined. Roughly chop 100g of the mini chocolate eggs, then fold into the batter. Pour the batter into the tin and gently shake to level the surface. Press half of the remaining whole mini chocolate eggs into the top.

STEP 3

Ingredients: 225g unsalted butter, cut into cubes, plus extra for the tin 100g white chocolate, roughly chopped 250g light muscovado sugar 150g caster sugar

3 large eggs 1 tbsp vanilla bean paste 325g plain flour

Bake the blondies for 45-50 mins. Check they are cooked by giving the tin a gentle shake – they should be mostly set, with a slight wobble in the centre. Remove from the oven and immediately press the rest of the whole mini chocolate eggs into the top (these can be roughly crushed or halved first for a different texture, if you like). Leave to cool completely in the tin. Don't worry if the mixture sinks slightly. Once cooled, the blondies will be gooey, fudgy and moist, cut into squares and serve. Will keep in an airtight tin for up to four days.

1 tsp baking powder 160g mini chocolate eggs Method: STEP 1 Heat the oven to 190C/170C fan. Butter a deep 20 x 20cm brownie tin, and line the base and sides with baking parchment. Melt the butter and white chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water, stirring now and then until smooth. Remove from the heat and leave to cool for 5 mins.

STEP 2 Tip the muscovado and caster sugars and the eggs into a large, clean bowl and whisk for 2 mins until the mixture is thick and foamy. Whisk a quarter of 11

OE INTERVIEW

Interview with Patti Clare In December 2021 Old Eastbournian, Patti Clare came to the college to watch the school’s production of ‘Les Miserables’. Before she watched the fantastic performance, she sat down for an interview about her time at Eastbourne in the early 90s and her experience as both a stage actress and a TV actress. Most famously she has stared as “Mary Taylor” on Coronation Street since 2008 and is a three-time winner of the British Soap Award for Best Comedy Performance!

Which A levels did you take?

I did English literature, history, and classical civilisation. The stuff I learnt in classical civilisation actually helped me so much in my acting Do you have any advice for aspiring actors who are currently at the college?

I would think very carefully because the business has changed with covid. The old fashioned route of repertory theatre’s aren’t as much there for younger actors but having said that there aren’t any rules anHi, Patti. Which house were you in? ymore! There’s never been a magic formula on how Nugent. So, when I came it was only the sixth form one becomes an actor and progresses through. I that was mixed. The rest of the school was just boys, would say get your exams and if you want to go on so we were like these exotic strange creatures, and to further education then do that because there’s we all stayed in one house and that was Nugent. But plenty of time unless you’re absolutely burning with it was split into two, there was the main house and almost vocational zeal! But even then, I would then there was a house on the other side where the strongly recommend getting your education out of day girls tended to be. That was the house to try to the way because it is a long journey. get into because (I shouldn’t say this!) you could sneak out because our housemaster was on the other side of the house!!

What is the role that you’re most proud of?

Boy, that’s a really good question. I think in terms Do you have any lasting memories of Eastbourne? of theatre it was a role up at the citizens theatre in Glasgow. I worked there from the age of 18 to 36, so I do, I loved my time here. I’d come from a convent, many years. It would be a role I did for them in a so it was a huge change. The sense of space and freedom and how we were treated as an adult and a human being. Especially as a female you were absolutely equal to everyone in the school.

The freedom of being able to go out in the afternoon is what I loved most though. You couldn’t keep me in! I loved going to the beach. On top of that my education and the help from my teachers. Eastbourne was just a wonderful, wonderful school, for me anyway.

OE INTERVIEW Noel Coward play called Cavalcade. It was the story of a posh family and a maid, and I was the maid! It was really wonderfully done. So that part I was very proud of because I had to age from 19 up to about 50. I was in my thirties when I played the role and it was just so enjoyable. In terms of telly, most of my work has been in theatre up and till I landed this role in Coronation street, which is now 14 years in. so in a way I’m quite proud of that, because it’s quite a feat to keep going and to create something from scratch. The comedy which I’ve been able to bring to the character was enjoyable too.

Are there any roles that you would like to play in the future?

Yes! Now the weird thing is, since doing Cory my tastes have changed, which I think is a good thing.

I’m intrigued to see, if I ever do leave Cory what it will be like for me because I’m not just a Soap actress, I have got years of theatre experience behind me too. In an ideal world I would like to be in Les Mis as Madame Thenardier. Another musical I’d like to have a go at would be Mrs Lovett in Sweeney Todd. I don’t sing but I just think they’re great roles! Mostly theatre I suppose, but in terms of telly I would love to play Miss Marple one day.

If you can really hold onto your own belief of what you can do then that can take you further than anything else, because you will undoubtedly get a whole load of no’s. but its just part of the business to get knockbacks. Every successful actor has had rejections at some point in there life What’s it like being back in Eastbourne?

Oh I love it! Although I don’t recognise it, it’s mutated into this city. It’s fabulous, just wonderful. I can see that you’re going to get great training here And finally, how did you get the job at Coronation Street!?

I had a straightforward audition. I decided to go into the audition and do it how I wanted to do it. So I went in all in green. Green top, green skirt, green tights, for no particular reason. I learnt the script inside out and got on really well. During the conversation we started talking about the character and I said she could be into colour therapy! Which they laughed at. I don’t think they knew what they were Do you have any funny audition stories?

Oh yes. There was one where I was so nervous that looking for, they were just looking for a certain qualwhen the director asked my name, I forgot my name! ity.

I was that nervous. There was one at the national where I got into a bickering fight with this really established director called Kate. I was going to just be an extra but before I got into the audition, they gave me a script and I told them that I was only coming as an extra to carry a tray! So, it didn’t start well. And from there it just went downhill. She was trying to direct me, and I was resistant. Looking back at it I should have just gone for it actually.

Do you have any advice for auditions for any aspiring actors at the college?

Really prepare well. Learn it inside and out, especially for telly. They expect you to be off script and 13

Mardi Gras Mardi Gras may be unfamiliar to some of you, but it is a widely celebrated holiday in many different parts of the world! You may be wonder ing, what is Mardi Gras? Mardi Gras is a tradition that dates back hundreds of years and is held as a prelude to Lent. ‘Mardi’ is the French word for Tuesday, and ‘gras’ means ‘fat’. In France, the day before Ash Wednesday came to be known as Mardi Gras or ‘Fat Tuesday’. Traditionally, in the days leading up to Lent, merrymakers would binge on all the rich, fatty foods including meat, eggs, milk, and cheese that remained in their homes in anticipation of several weeks of eating only fish and different types of fasting over Lent.

HOUSE CONCERT REVIEW

Pennel House Concert The whole of Pennel House, including all years, participated in their house concert on the 5th of February, 2022. Freddie Ferro provides a greater insight into the concert with more information of what was performed and behind the scenes action: “Pennell held their annual house review earlier in the term, with Gary Gao and Oriol Chazarra leading us through the evening. The Year 9s started the event with a rendition of The Three Little Pigs with which they also won the inter-house drama competition. The Year 11s’ stereotypes video was very amusing, along with the Year 13s’ trip to Tesco video. There were also several solo performances, including Sam Sanders on the guitar, James Yee on the violin, Steven He with a performance of the traditional Chinese flute, Victor Lam on the piano and

The Year 10s performed a synchronised version of Swan Lake, whilst the Year 12s provided us with some excellent moves on the dance floor. The Year 13 leavers’ video gave us some extraordinary before and after photos, with the night being wrapped up by a performance of the house song, which secured Pennell second place in the boys category in the inter-house singing competition.

The Geography Department Reads...

Mr Wingfield Digby recommends ‘The Power of

Mr Lamb has just finished reading Sir Earnest Shack-

One’ by Bryce Courtney which he first read and loved when he was about 13 or 14. It is a wonderful adventure of resilience and growing up and is set in South Africa in the war and during apartheid. It is pretty hard-hitting at times, but you can’t put it down.

leton’s amazing diary “South” which charts the exploits of his team in the Antarctic from 1914 to their eventual rescue in 1917. This is an even more poignant read as the world has just been reunited with Shackleton’s ship The Endurance, sunk during that ill-fated expedition and only just now rediscovered on the sea bed of the Weddell Sea in almost pristine condition, some 107 years later.

The words in this book are Shackleton’s own, written in the style and tone of the time, where nothing was too onerous, everything was politely delivered and understated, when people did not show weakness and yet where the spirit of excitement and adventure was no less palatable either.

Mr Longden loves non-fiction. The latest book he read was ‘The Power of Geography’ by Tim Marshall, a respected and credible foreign affairs correspondent and author. It is a sequel to ‘Prisoners of Geography’ which was a previous geography department recommended read. It seeks to illustrate how future issues and potential or probable conflicts are rooted in historic and present geopolitics. He would recommend it as, after reading it, far more of what people read, see or hear in the news will make sense to them. Crucially, they will likely be able to understand not just what is happening but have a more nuanced understanding of why.

Following on from COP26, he also recommends ‘Climate Change: A very short introduction’ by Mark Maslin. It is a small book but provides a really good foundation understanding of climate change, so it is a good place to begin for anyone interested in the issue.

His final recommendation is a general eye-opener called ‘Weapons of Math Destruction’ by Cathy O’Neil. It shines a light on big tech companies. It poses the questions of some of their practices and uses of big data and algorithm targeting. It questions whether these are actually good for individuals or society and is a thoughtprovoking, and hopefully eye-opening read. When paired with a knowledge of the Facebook—Cambridge Analytica scandal, it poses the question as to whether these algorithms are so powerful that, above and beyond marketing products to people, they can be used to selectively influence major things like voting outcomes in elections or referendums and therefore risk undermining the concept of democracy itself.

You have just minutes before your body freezes

Picture this: you fall through the ice in your sleeping bag during the long Antarctic winter and are pulled soaking wet from the water by members of your team.

There are no spare sleeping bags and you have minutes before your body freezes. No phone calls to medical aid, no lightweight sleeping bags and spare warm kit….. Out of nowhere, your leader then hands you his own duckdown sleeping bag, one of only a handful with the group and he takes your wet woollen sleeping bag away to sleep in… Now, that is leadership.

Shackleton’s style and approach to leading his men comes through loud and clear in his own writings in this book: the pressure of responsibility, and the strength of character and the inner determination that he possesses. If you want a pulse-raising read then this is not the go-to book. If you want to read a bit of incredible history, a tale of derring-do written in the style of the time it was written, then this is the book to go to. And when you are a bit weary of reading, jump on your legs and walk up to St Andrews Prep School and view the house he lived in. It is only a stone’s throw away from the school – you can see the blue plaque on the wall!

His ship is called ‘Endurance’, by the way – a perfectly selected name for the adventure that Shackleton and his merry band of explorers called home before it was crushed by the ice and sunk. Google it and check out the underwater footage. Now that is exciting!

Tu Youyou As part of the Be You Race and Ethnicity Group, we hope to share some key figures who have been influentional in their field of work. In this issue, I will be presenting Tu Youyou. She is the Chinese pharmaceutical chemist who discovered a cure for malaria.

Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease caused by a parasite that infect mosquitos. These then act as a vector transmitting their disease to humans through bites. People who get malaria are usually sick with high fevers and flu-like illness. In 2020, there were an estimated 241 million cases of malaria worldwide with deaths at 627,000. The African region carries a disproportionately high share of the global malaria burden and is home to 95% of malaria cases and 96% of deaths in 2020 with children under five years old, accounting for an estimated 80% of all malaria deaths in the region.

Powell House Concert On the evening of the Saturday 26th of February, the Birley Centre hosted the exciting Powell House Revue.

The Year 13 comperes started off the show with a BANG! They introduced the audience with a comedic video showing how they prepared for the event.

Tom, Zac and Will welcomed us, as well as continually amusing us throughout the intervals between acts with some arguably funny jokes.

They finished off the showcase with their house song I’m a Believer which I’m sure people outside the Birley Centre could hear.

The acts started with the Powell House Band performing “Stacy’s Mom” which featured Ben Young as the main singer which the audience loved.

Next up was the Year Nine dance act which they performed with loads of confidence and smashed it out of the park. Practice does make perfect.

The Year Ten boys created different advertisements which were very amusing, and the audience were laughing at too.

The Year Elevens performed a live sketch of The Chase, asking loads of questions to do with Powell.

Some of the boys played Mack the Knife on different instruments which was impressive, and loud!

This interview with Mrs Smith has really illustrated to me how inspiring the work of the Learning Enrichment Department is, and offers a glimpse into the bright supportive future for our school.

Out of Eastbourne College’s 630 students, 170 are known to have dyslexia. Dyslexia is much more common than many people realise. Currently, the department provides around 50 students (and many more during exams) with learning and exam assistance, such as reading pens and technology, coloured filters, scribe technology, exam readers, and extra time in examinations. The assistance provided is tailored to the individual needs of the student.

Although the department’s building is small, and they only have a team of four; they provide a great deal of assistance.

They provide one-to-one sessions and cognitive tests.

These tests sound quite intimidating but are really quite the opposite; they check how you read, write, spell, your speed of work, and how you learn. The tests also check for signs of dyslexia and ADHD. The department will then set up an Individual Education Plan (IEP) outlining the nature of what you need and how teachers can support you. Mrs Smith, Head of Learning Enrichment, mentioned how some students have referred themselves for these tests as they feel they are struggling and want to establish if there is anything more.

This year’s London Fashion Week was held from February 18th - 22nd. The event has evolved to promote British fashion designers in the UK and internationally, shaping trends for current seasons as well as those upcoming.

Standout Shows Simone Rocha - Simone Rocha administrated her show in the medieval church of St Bartholomew in the city of London, unveiling a collection with the motif of motherhood signifying new beginnings. This incorporated infantile oversized collars and inspired nightgowns. 1 Molly Goddard - Molly’s Fall 2022 ready-to-wear collection was inspired by her inter-generational family memories growing up in West London during the 80s. Her main and iconic feature has to the be the ruffle net dresses and skirts. Goddard has a representation for exploring fabric manipulation and careful construction with transparent materials. 2

Street Style London Fashion Week strikes inspiration from beyond the catwalk with photographers capturing a series of inventive looks and ensembles being modelled through the streets of London by fashion fanatics.

Poster Girl - Poster Girl, founded by two young female best friends, has recently had a surge in popularity known for its pop of colour, shimmer and fitting pieces contributing to being one of the most in-demand shows. Its affordability and figure-hugging prices bring a fresh aspect to modern fashioned overruled by oversized pieces. 3

London Fashion Week is not only for fully established designers, but the inclusive expressionist event encourages and welcomes emerging individuals into the industry. Central Saint Martin’s numbers of students presenting their work increased from 20 to 32 as they displayed their work of ‘diversity, inclusion, community purpose, and creative solutions’.

Inclusivity in catwalk casting has continued to escalate, boosting representation in the fashion industry for body inclusivity.

Blackwater House Report I think it is safe to say that Blackwater have had a brilliant past few weeks.

The term started with a bang, as the girls were able to get out their costumes and transform themselves into movie characters for the Blackwater and Craig house dinner. Once again, Miss Simmons did not let the team down as the night was filled with endless amount of activities, music and delicious food that really made the night! From Mario and Luigi to the glamorous Audrey Hepburn, our version of Disney Land was successfully created!

Blackwater House ended House Netball on a major high as the girls won the inter house netball competition, winning the Junior B, Senior A and Senior B as well as the overall competition! Blackwater girls were brimming with happiness and excitement and as always they had given it their all. A huge thanks and congratulations to everyone who got involved and for all the organisers.

A night that many will not be forgetting Noticeable achievements have not been overlooked, as events such as the ‘Charity Revue’ was organised

by MeiLusha Askaroff (Year 13) to raise awareness and create an event where musicians can show off their incredible skills, including one of our own Megan Lee (Year 13). The Live Lounge event was a night that many will not be forgetting especially when Mimi Gould (Year 12) and Mary KeastButler (Year 10). Both sounded phenomenal as we got to hear and see a sneak peak into their creative song writing minds as they both performed their own tunes!

Achievements have not just been outside the classroom but very much in, as Year 13s and 11s had to cope with the gruelling mock exams! However, the girls have all been working unimaginably hard and without fail they will all do amazingly. Congratulations to all.

With a score of 0-0 at half-time, it was an intense game, but by full-time, the girls managed to pull it out of the bag 2-1. What an achievement! We are so proud of you all!

Inter-house netball was a thrilling event and a great atmosphere, especially from the School House girls! Overall, School came 3rd, which some may say was not the best result but they can’t say the team spirit wasn't there!

CHARITY UPDATE

Charity Update Gonville House raised over £400 for Matthew 25 Mission (a charity which seeks to rebuild broken lives, including those who are homeless). In addition, over 4 boxes of fleeces and rain jackets were hand delivered, just part of the on-going great work Gonville is doing to support this charity.

Reeves House had a fantastic revue and in the process raised over £400, which will be donated to The British Red Cross, for their work with Ukrainian refugees.

Watt House, raised more money for charity – this time at their House Revue, with over £320 for Macmillan Cancer Support. This supplemented over £700 raised in a Cake Sale - the power of cake!

A 24-hour Rowathon was undertaken by Wargrave House raising over £5000 for the charity Warming Up The Homeless.

It was a really monumental effort by the whole House.

The Charity Lunch in January raised over £370 for the Chapel Charities, showing that small sacrifices can be a practical (as well as a symbolic) help to others.

Finally, Powell House raised over £340 at their recent House Revue for The Chaseley Trust, which is a unique nursing home in Eastbourne, specialising in caring for residents with complex neurological disabilities or progressive conditions.
