For 16-year-old Mariana Correa the words “If I were your parents I wouldn’t let you play tennis” was the motivation she needed to thrive at Texas A&M University-Kingsville as an international student and an athlete. With a suitcase full of dreams and determination to prove that statement wrong, Correa traveled from Brazil to TAMUK in 2017 to play tennis and pursue a degree in Civil

For Correa this accomplishment emphasized that her family’s sacrian international student, Correa strives to standout in her academics with the

goal to succeed in the job market. “We [Gustavo and Paula Correa] are very proud of the dedication Mariana puts towards her studies, her internships and her tutoring job. She’s getting closer to graduating, and she has grown so much as a person over the years… I’m most proud of Mariana during the toughest times, when she remains focused on her goals no matter the circumstance…we are proud of the person she is becoming,” Paula Correa, mother of Marianna Correa, said. summer of 2019, Correa worked alongside SpawGlass Contractors and had the opportunity to work on the new School of Music at TAMUK focusing on construction management. Correa has also worked with BGE Inc. where she provided engineer support for water infrastructure design projects. As a sophomore in college, Correa joined the Pathway Academic Assistant Center (PAAC) as a tutor for Civil Engineering and enjoys helping others succeed. Correa’s involvement and extracurricular activities have made her a top performer among the engineering program. “I talked to other faculty in the department and we found that she was one of our best students. There was a group of really good students but when we were adding things together she had a few more things that put her above other students. She’s done a really great job during her undergrad studies,”

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental illness that impacts about one out of 40 adults in the United States. People with OCD deal with obsessions and compulsions that can be uncontrollable and time-consuming. Obsessions can be unwanted thoughts such as constantly worrying about the well-being of others, awareness of physical sensations such as breathing, blinking, hair moving or skin crawling, and suspicion of people without a reason to be suspicious. Compulsions are doing tasks in a set routine or a certain number of times, such as counting one’s steps, checking locks, ovens, or closet multiple times, and or refusing to touch something out of fear or disgust. It is unknown why people have OCD. Stress can contribute and wors-

en the symptoms. There are mixed results on whether women and or more than the other. Everyone can have habits, have negative thoughts or worry, but for people with OCD their actions and they live. Their obsessions and compulsions interfere with completing work, engaging in their social life and takes up about an hour or more of their day. enjoyable and make the person feel out of control, powerless, exhausted and drained. There are four categories of OCD types: symmetry and ordering, contamination, ruminations and intrusive thoughts and checking. Although OCD comes in all forms, these four are the most common. Symmetry and ordering are the impulse to line things up in a certain pattern; in a way that is supposed to be correct.

With contamination, people with OCD refuse to touch items they believe are contaminated or infested with germs and a compulsion to clean profusely. Ruminations and intrusive thoughts are obsessions with a certain thought, or the mind being plagued with negative and/or violent and disturbing thoughts. These thoughts tend to pop up unannounced Checking, possibly the most common, is the compulsion to constantly check locks, switches (oven, lights), closets, etc. Many cases of people with OCD stem from fear, trauma, anxiety, depression and tics, and/ or hereditary. While there is no cure, there are ways one can cope, manage and treat OCD. Addressing one’s OCD, keeping a journal, mentally and physically refocusing, keeping stress at a minimum and

rewarding oneself are some ways to manage. Give your OCD a name and a shape, this helps address it head on. Writing down your compulsions and how it made you feel helps you understand why you committed to the compulsion and why you felt it was necessary to do. Mentally refocusing such as counting, spelling out a name or saying the alphabet can help shift your attention. Physically refocusing ercise, humming or singing, or snapping your

There is no doubt that as a college student and young adult you will live with roommates at some point. Whether it is in an apartment, dorm or house, living with roommates has almost become the right of passage when it comes to being an adult. do you be a respectable and good roommate? Well, here are some tips when it comes to sharing a living space as a college student. in with your new room-

mates everyone will be on the look out and be on their best behavior, but as the weeks go by you will relax and feel more comfortable, which is nice, but can also be very dangerous depending on the people you end up living with. When your roommates get comfortable things tend to get sloppy. You may want to times, they may be going through something and if that’s the case just pick up the extra slack and maybe do their dishes for the week. However, if this per-

Make a few house rules or split up chores and make a schedule to keep things tidy and organized. If you end up with messy nightmare roommates who refuse to pick

Tamir Rice was 12 years old playing with a pellet gun when cops shot and killed him. “It was the parent’s fault,” some comments said. “Where was his father to teach him?” “He was 5’ 7’’ and bigger than most cops who wouldn’t shoot?” “It was ers said. How could anyone say that a child deserved to die? If a 12-year-old me sat in the park pointing a gun at people, I would still be alive, but because Tamir was black and tall, he is no longer with us, and his family will never get to watch him grow up. Why were the messages from the callers not relayed when they said, “probably a toy” and “is a juvenile” and if the

That as a kid my life was never endangered because I sat in a public park. I am grateful for life and will live remembering and lost to police brutality I acknowledge that not all cops are racist, and a majority of cops are not a part of the problem, but I recognize that there is a problem in this country, and I will do everything in my power to do what is right in my publishing career.
