Recently, Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) met with faculty and students to discuss a fee increase proposal that would affect incoming freshman and graduate students. Voting opened online on Blue and Gold for students on Monday, Oct.11 and closed on Oct. 12. Students were given a yes or no option of whether they supported an athletic fee increase. The fee would increase from the current $20 a semester to $40 with the intention of supporting the general operations of TAMUK athletics and student athletes. Votes were totaled and the fee increase proposal ultimately did not pass. “Nearly 1,000 students voted in total - 955 to be exact,” Vice President for Enrollment Services and Student Affairs Dr. Rito

Silva said. In the end, 792 students did not support the fee increase and 163 did support the increase proposal. Emails and reminders by the university were sent out days before voting, encouraging students to log into their accounts and use the voting as an opportunity to make their voices heard. The emails also went into detail as to what the athletic fee increase would go towards, that way students could get a better understanding if they did not attend the available hearing the week of Oct. 4. The voter turnout appeared to be significantly higher this time than in previous referendums. “This indicates our students are actively participating in the decision-making process on our campus,” Silva said. Even though multiple fee increase proposals were discussed in an earlier meeting, the athletic fee was the only one that students were able to vote on. See Fees, Pg 3

Chatter filled the room as individuals who had not seen each other in a long time and those who see each other every day, engaged in conversation. Whether they left or stayed, everyone in Room 219 on the second floor of the Memorial Student Union Building (MSUB) found another place to call home at Texas A&M University – Kingsville (TAMUK). The university held a Tejano Heritage Awards Banquet at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 14 at the Memorial Student Union Building to celebrate

four Tejano pioneers who have made an impact on the university. TAMUK invited four honorees, Oscar Gonzalez and Roberto Gonzales, who received a Tejano Heritage Award, as well as Antonia Alvarez and Alicia Arredondo Clarke, who received a Tejano Service award. These four individuals were recognized by the university at this event for the mark they made and for paving the way for the Hispanic community. Their work was acknowledged and rewarded with a plaque during the event. “I know many people are out there that could be honored in this way. So, it means a lot because you get recognized for the amount of time and dedication that you give to the university. It’s definitely a very important award for me,” Alvarez said. I learned a lot. I grew up here, I was 25 years old when I started, this kind of was my life. Just to be here, in a place that I love so much, that I gave so much of my time and effort to, is very nice to be recognized in this way,” Alvarez said. Gonzales, a Falfurrias

native and a track record holder, was recognized for the impact he left while attending what used to be Texas A&I University. “The award means that people appreciate the things that I’ve accomplished at the high school level and college level and when somebody appreciates what you’ve done, it keeps the memory alive,” Gonzales said. This banquet was hosted by Dr. Manuel Flores, a professor at the university and member of the His-

They should encompass our multi-cultural heritage, and everyone should be made aware of them,” Flores said. “I don’t want future generations to forget the great legacy laden with opportunities we have now were obtained by struggle and sacrifice of many.”

TAMUK students participate in escape room

Thrones themed event brings together student body SimonPoe|Contributing Writer

Jon Snow may have known nothing, but university students had to use their brains to participate in a recent escape room on-campus event. The escape room event, hosted by the Campus Activities Board (CAB), was held on Oct. 12 at the ballrooms in the

Memorial Student Union Building. The escape room consisted of two chambers full of puzzles and riddles for students to solve. The CAB set up two identical escape rooms and students participated in groups of six to eight. The rooms took about 20 minutes to solve. The event was “Game of

Thrones” themed, with decorations and music inspired by the show. “We brought this activity back because it is different to some of our other events,” Carmela Martinez, a member of the CAB who worked at the event, said. “Most events we hold are more physically active, while this is more of a brain teaser. It’s something you can use your brain for instead of your body.” This is the third time the CAB has hosted an escape room. The CAB members plan on hosting more events to help students meet each other. “Especially after COVID, it’s been really hard to get to know other people and put yourself out there,” Martinez said. “We definitely have tried to make as many events as we can so that students can have more opportunities to meet

Many students go to events like this one to meet other people. “I feel like every student gets to meet other people on campus. You meet people and get to enjoy events like

pave the way for women to pursue a career in this field of work. The organization is currently working on one community service project for which the members go out to Jesus R. Perez Elementary School in Kingsville to educate the fifth-grade class on a STEM outreach program. Thus, biweekly WIMENS volunteers conduct a STEM-based experiments with the class to show them that STEM based fields are plausible career opportunities for everyone. “One goal of WIMENS is to go to a local elementary school and demonstrate science projects to young children. We are expecting this to be a wonderful way to encourage the youth to be excited by science, and at the same time, we expect this to help with their future standardized state test,” member Morgan Apostol said. The program is affiliated with the nonprofit organization Nerd Squad. Nerd Squad was founded by Dr. Cagney Coomer when she recognized she was often the only minority in her classes. She had a desire to see change in her own community, this was her motivation to develop Nerd Squad and this has inspired WIMENS to reach out and be active in the Kingsville community as well. “I do expect to see

an increase in women joining STEM industries in the coming years.” Co-President Natalia Flores said. “It is only a matter of time until women start to populate the STEM workforce as our society’s culture begins to change. “Organizations have a huge impact on this, especially STEM organizations that do outreach since we are able to maintain STEM major retention and create competitive students for higher education.” WIMENS is dedicated to providing a safe space for women in STEM to come forward with their concerns, experiences and future prospects at TAMUK. WIMENS will provide women with the opportunity to: participate in group forums, volunteer opportunities, group activities, exposure to research opportunity and guest speakers. Fossil Roadshow, hosted by the Campus Activity Board (CAB), educated students on fossils through an interactive activity on Oct. 13. The Fossil Roadshow event took place at the pavilion during which students were able to sift through murky sediment for the chance to take home their own fossils. Many students felt a change of scenery at this event was great to see and even more exciting to be part of. The two men in charge of the organization, Noah Royak and Bill Berry, operate the event to educate students about life beyond fossil hunting. “Whatever your passion is, chase it with everything you have, and you will always end up in a good place,” Berry

said. CAB members were excited to host the event as it differed from their usual events. “We were looking to mix it up, so we decided on the idea to celebrate national days,” CAB Public Relations Officer Carmela Martinez said. “Today is actually National Fossil Day which is why we brought in the Fossil Roadshow.” Many students were able to find fossils that they could take home with them ranging from a small turtle shell to a giant bull shark tooth. Freshman Christian Lopez was extremely pleased with the event and how inclusive it was. “I really like how it appealed to people who like geology and that I get to say that ‘I found this or I found that while enjoying this event hosted by our university’” Lopez said. “I thought that this was a really cool experience. I feel like more people should be into stuff like that. It is pret-

ty interesting and almost never seen around places like our own campus. I would really reccommend that events like these are implented more within our reach. As college students it was nice to have access to this event right in the center of TAMUK.” Senior, Karina Deleon, said it was very fun to be involved with this event. “This was probably the first time I had seen an event like this hosted on campus and it has been nice to enjoy all that I can before graduation this fall,” Deleon said. “As a current student I believe that I can speak for everyone when I say that we would like to have more unique events hosted on campus just like this one.” The Fossil Roadshow travels frequently to introduce people to the world of archaeology along with their comedy entertainment business.

Texas A&M University- Kingsville (TAMUK) Women in Mathematics, Engineering and Science (WIMENS) organization was founded in 2017 by student Camila Salcedo. Her vision to establish WIMENS was to create a space where women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) can support and empower each other to overcome inequality. The organization is dedicated to help inspire women to pursue a career in a STEM field. “It is vital to the growth of WIMENS and the growth of women in STEM for organizations like ours to continue to prosper. In the past year that was affected by the pandemic, we relied on our existing group of members to stay active,” Co-President Mauricia Gallegos said. “Studies have shown that individuals in STEM who do not have a community, or any kind of support are more likely to change their major. Therefore, we worked hard to continue to offer weekly virtual meetings to keep providing a safe and supportive environment for our members.” WIMENS believes that service is an essential component to help

Gomez takes reigns on CAB: Organization members predict a successful year New CAB advisor takes place of Roberton Erik Estrada| Contributing Writer

From being an undergraduate student at Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) to becoming a student worker with the institution, Ju l i a n n e Gomez returns to take on her new role at the Courtesy of @tamukcab university Julianne Gomez as Campus Act ivit ies Coordinator and Campus Activities Board (CAB) Advisor. Gomez is a current graduate student working towards her Master of Interdisciplinary Studies and makes it her top priority to keep a school/worklife balance. “During my undergraduate career, I was a student worker for student activities. I worked here at the office, did my schoolwork

and at the same time balanced student teaching,” Gomez said. “It was like having two jobs, but I found a balance and applied that skill towards being the CAB Advisor and Campus Activities Coordinator.” Gomez brings a new type of leadership and guidance to campus. Her role is vital to CAB and looked upon with high expectations. “The expectation is to host events that students can enjoy and to make sure it’s the type of events they want to see,” Gomez said. “We’re also trying to improve the retention of CAB members and would also like to greatly improve participation at our events. I feel like students are ready to come back out into the open and get involved.” CAB was recently under the direction of former Assistant Director of Student Activities Loreal Robertson. Since 2012, Robertson has hosted many events for the organization, but with Gomez now advising, it is a chance for new opportunities. CAB Public Relations Coordinator Carmela Martínez anticipates what

the group can gain from this new change in leadership. “I think by having Julianne as our new advisor, I’m expecting a fresh start. I am hoping to change it up this year,” Martínez said. “We already had some awesome events and ideas lined up this school year but with the recent change, I think she will spice up our plans and the outcome for this year will be more than what CAB hoped for.” Gomez offers a new point of view and CAB staff are excited to continue working with her. CAB Vice President Ysenia Granados hopes Gomez’s new role will benefit not just the organization but all student activities. “We look forward to providing exciting, new events for students and getting innovative ideas for our organization,” Granados said. “I hope to gain a new perspective from Julianne and to see where we can improve for TAMUK students.” Gomez looks forward to getting the ball rolling on more student activities and is excited to see what CAB can bring to campus in the coming year.

“The University will implement the other fee increases if they are approved by the Board of Regents at their meeting in November. The fee increases would go into effect Fall 2022 and will not affect anyone on the fixed tuition plan. Fee increases of ‘lab fees of $30 or less’ do not need Board of Regents approval and they will be instituted,” Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Lou Reinisch said. Different students had different reasons for why they voted to either support or not support the proposal. “I voted no because I don’t want to spend money on resources that are extraneous to me. Financially, this proposal does not make sense for a student who does not want to pay for something they do not use. This is a factor on affordability and ultimately leads to more expenses and an unnecessary amount of money those potential future students have to pay,” sophomore music major Oscar

3A Cantu said. The university’s affordability draws the attention of many incoming students and makes the campus stand out amongst others. “Our goal at TAMUK is to keep tuition and fees as low as possible. With that said, at times there is a need to propose an increase in specific fees in order to enhance specific student services,” Silva said. Students who supported the fee increase were influenced and encouraged to vote with an understanding that the university is in need of changes in certain departments. “What student athletes like myself have noticed was that our conditions in the school building were not up to par with other universities. It affects me because I would love to attend a school that is top tier and has a nice facility to learn,” junior business marketing major and track and field athlete Felix Hernandez said. Although the university hosted an open fee hearing for all students

and faculty, not many attended to get firsthand information and ask direct questions to those departments who made their proposals and stated their reasons as to why it was needed. “I truly feel this did not pass because of the lack of knowledge our students had, and that’s why they voted a certain way. Students don’t really attend meetings so if the university were to have taken a different approach in promoting the fee increase, such as posting on social media, sending videos to the students or even allowing professors and faculty to directly speak and propose the increase to the students, then it might have passed,” Hernandez said. TAMUK focuses on providing all students from all departments an outstanding college experience and that is why it proposed fee increases after years of maintaining the same fees. “The university will assess how best to move forward now that the athletic fee referendum did not pass,” Silva said.

Review: Venom: Let There Be Carnage Venom joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe

AnnalisaPerales| Contributing Writer

Marvel does their magic again, folks with more comedy and action in the latest movie, Venom: Let There Be Carnage. This sequel begins with the backstory of Cletus Kasady, a character who was introduced in the credit scenes of the first movie who is in prison for murder. His backstory shows him in a facility along with a young girl, Frances Barrison, who has a supersonic scream. Due to Barrison’s ability, she gets taken away from Kasady to be held at a top-secret facility and is believed to be dead by most. In the present time, Eddie Brock is still having a hard time living

with the symbiote Venom who resides inside him. Although the struggle is truly real, Brock still manages to get his notorious journalist role back and is beckoned by Kasady to do an interview. As multiple interviews take place, Venom makes the mistake of infecting Kasady with symbiotic blood which in turn creates the villain, Carnage. When Carnage strikes a deal with Kasady and the now prison escapee, Barrison, they all three plan to kill those they see as a threat which includes Brock and Venom. Brock would be prepared for an alien symbiote to attack, but unfortunately he and Venom got separated after fighting with each other. Now racing to fight for not only his life but the life of his ex-fiance, Brock and Venom have to work through their

issues and find a way to survive Carnage’s attack. There were quite a few things about this specific Marvel that make me iffy about how I generally feel about it. One thing I thought that made the movie worthy of watching was that, unlike the first film, we actually get to see Venom’s true personality. While he is an alien symbiote that needs to eat humans or more specifically their heads, you learn that Venom is an outsider when it comes to his kind and just wants to be accepted and appreciated. It was nice to see Venom more as a person or close to a person as he can get rather than just being a symbiote inside of Brock. Throughout the film, the audience gets to see the quirkiness and oddly loveable personality as

he shows his own type of innocent humor and various emotions. As the last movie, Tom Hardy once again does a fantastic job in his role as Eddie Brock/ Venom. Hardy portrays his character very well and in a comedic way as this film showed more of how Brock is coping with his new life and ability. The one disappointing aspect of this film was the so-called symbiotic villain, Carnage. While he was intriguingly gross as a villain should be, he didn’t exactly have or give an exact motive on why he should kill Venom. But Carnage wasn’t the only bad villain in this film, as his human version who is played by the loveable Woody Harrelson, also is a villain. As much as I can see why his character was needed in order for Carnage to be born, his murderous background

With the final round of blind auditions coming to an end, The Voice is loaded with amazing talent across all four teams. Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Ariana Grande and Blake Shelton will now prepare for the next round of competition known as the knockout rounds. As all four teams now identify themselves full, it will be intense to witness which artists will advance. If you have never watched an episode of The Voice, it may be best to catch up on Season 21 as this year contains plenty of artists who will blow your mind. Raquel Trinidad, a 23-year-old singer from

Miami, expresses herself through singing and creates glass art to inspire creativity. With an eager heart, Trinidad was hopeful to lure a coach in her direction. It would be later that round, during which Ariana Grande would claim the young artist after an impressive take on Stevie Wonder’s “I Wish.” As several individual artists take the stage, a certain trio would gather the attention of two coaches. This trio from Redlands, Calif., is made up of Neil, Gentry and Rob, and the latter two have known each other for more than 20 years after meeting while playing music in church. While struggling through their own trials and tribulations, The Joy Reunion solidified a ticket to the second round on Team Blake. The most wholesome part of these auditions

Whether you’ve been driving for a while or if it’s your first time, these steps will take your parallel parking skills to a whole new level. First, find the right parking spot. You do not want to parallel park into just any parking spot; find a spot that is at least one and one half the size of your vehicle. Or, you can pull up

This goes for 30-yearold Holly Forbes, who lives with her partner Seth and their children Oliver and Violett in Catlettsburg, Ken., where she writes songs and works as a caregiver for patients with autism. Forbes’ story and talented voice is like none other. After singing backup for so many years, Forbes was pre-

pared to step into the spotlight during the blind auditions. With a stellar four-chair turn, Kelly Clarkson ended up victorious in becoming Forbes’ coach. After witnessing the blind auditions, so many were left wanting more and attempting to guess who would claim the end prize in the season finale. While so many teams are looking sharper as the weeks continue, it is safe to say that my bets are placed on Team Kelly Clarkson to win Season 21 of The Voice.

How to Adult: Parallel Parking next to the parking spot and see whether your vehicle fits, then get your vehicle in position. Second, signal and assume position. After you have located a spot, you want to approach it slowly with your indicator or signal on to let others know you are about to park and which way you are parking. Third, check your surroundings. This is an important step as you do not want to put yourself or others in danger. Check your mirror and make sure no one is approaching. Make sure to also keep an eye on the parked cars to avoid hitting them. Fourth, start reversing and turn the wheel. Line up your car’s rear bumper as close as possible to the vehicle parked in front of you, assuming there is one. Make sure your car is in reverse! Again, you want to avoid accidents. up with the other car’s rear bumper. Fifth, head towards the curb (carefully). Turn your steering wheel all the way to the direction of the curb to position your car to a 45-degree angle. Continue until you can see the headlights of the car behind you in the driver’s-side mirror. Sixth, straighten out and turn the wheel the other way. Once you are at your 45-degree angle mark, unwind your wheel and line up your window pillar to the brake light of the other vehicle. Essentially, you are

about a foot backwards. Seventh, unwind the steering wheel the other way, straighten out and continue backing. At this point, you should already be parked (congratulations!). However, it is not over yet. After you have parked, fix yourself. Move forward or backward if you need to. Leave a good space between the vehicles in front and behind you so everyone can leave with ease. Truth be told, it takes a while to get the hang of it; but don’t fret, practice makes perfect.

Anticipated, anticlimactic, all around disappointing RaeMartinez|Entertainment Editor

Entertainment.editor @thesouthtexan.com

As a horror fan, Halloween kills was one of the movies I had been waiting to watch and I finally got the opportunity to do so. The movie starts off moments after the 2018 Halloween movie. Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), her daughter Karen (Judy Greer) and granddaughter, Allyson (Andi Matichak) think they got rid of Michael Myers until they hear he survived and is killing people again. Thus, the terror continues. This movie has a few nostalgic touches. We take a trip down memory lane and watch old scenes from the first Halloween movie made in 1978. We see old characters like Officer Hawkins, Lindsey the babysitter, Tommy Doyle and more make a comeback. What do these characters have in common? They all survived the boogeyman’s attacks. Now, inspired by Strode, the residents of Haddonfield, Ill., team up to put an end to Myers once and for all. However, if you have seen any of the other Halloween movies before, you know it does not end that way at all. I was excited to watch this movie; it was all I talked about for weeks. To say I was disappointed after I watched it would be an understatement. I understand that focus on teamwork within the community was a

major theme in the movie. However, it still felt like it strayed from its original purpose, which was for Michael Myers to get rid of his bloodline, especially Laurie. In this movie, Myers killed almost everyone but Laurie. It was mentioned a couple of times that he was headed to the hospital where Laurie was, but never made it as he was preoccupied with the residents. I as upset with how quickly some of the main characters died. They survived 40 years of terror just to die so easily? Their deaths were caused by a slip up, a careless mistake they could have prevented given their experience. Again, upset. Make no mistake, the movie was not bad, but it could have been better. It pains me to say it, but to me, it felt like a last-minute project. Like the directors were just piecing random scenes together until they met their hour mark. Like the other movies, this one satisfies all gore lovers as they get to see the ways in which Myers murders his victims. The creators of this movie really meant what they said in the title. Spoiler ahead, we actually get to put a face to the name! While trying to get Michael to not kill her daughter, Karen removes Michael’s mask, this does the trick. After 40 years, we finally got to see what Michael looks like. This does not last long, Michael ends up getting his mask back but it was fun while it lasted The end scene hints at another movie to come, but let’s just hope the next movie is better than this one.

Waiters only make at most a little over two dollars per hour, so tips are very much relied on. In other jobs, people don’t work for free, so why would it be any different in the service industry? When people go out to eat at a nice restaurant, they go for the experience because that’s what makes it different than just picking up fast food. The people who provide that experience deserve to be treated and appreciated. Waiters depend on tips as their main source of income. It’s what pays the bills, so technically, they rely on you, the customer. At the bottom of most tickets, there should be a gratuity tip percentage for the customer depending on how expensive their meal was. The rule of thumb is to always at least tip 15 percent, but that rule is outdated. Customers should tip according to how pleased they were with the service given. If they really liked their waiter and the food was excellent, a bigger tip won’t hurt their wallet as much as they might think it will. A lot of waiters like to serve big parties because they have a mindset of “the bigger the table, the bigger the tip,” but that’s not always the case. If you know your table was one of your server’s bigger ones or you know your table made a pretty big mess or even if you know your table was a bit needy, constantly asking for more, then your waiter deserves a bigger tip. Yes, some restaurants have people designated to cleaning up the messy tables, but if it’s busy and people are waiting for open seats, the waiter usually cleans their own tables. So, your tip essentially is paying for their service and clean up. The bottom line is to just be a kind customer and tip out of the kindness of your heart according to how much you liked the service. Servers don’t have to go out of their way to have conversations with you or get to know a customer. Don’t make excuses that you didn’t know they don’t get paid minimum wage because everybody at some point has heard that. Be respectful just as they have towards you and thank them with more than just two or three dollars.

Halloween is more than a holiday, it’s a culture Halloween is right around the corner. I want to address an issue that has bothered me for m a n y years. EvCalista ery year Reyes around Contributing this time Writer is when I begin to hear one of the oldest rumors in the book: that Halloween is the day of the devil. First off, this statement is incorrect and incredibly disrespectful. As someone who is of Irish descent, I find it extremely frustrating and sad that for years many

people have spread false and damaging ideology about this holiday. Halloween, or Samhain, began centuries ago by the Celtic people in what is now Ireland. The purpose of this holiday was to honor our ancestors who have passed on and ward off evil spirits. This day was when the Celtic people believed that the veil between the worlds was at its thinnest, therefore, our ancestors who had passed could return to earth. As they honored past loved ones, they were also aware that just as there were good spirits, there were evil spirits, which is why they wore costumes. They wore

animal hides and other pieces of clothing to mask themselves so that the evil spirits would leave them be. There was never any black magic, Satanic rituals or other dark practices. Just like everything else, Halloween has mutated from its original form. Most obviously, the nature of costumes has changed as you wouldn’t have seen many sexy nurses at the ancient bonfires. It also wasn’t until the Middle Ages that the exchange of food and drinks began which then turned into what we now know as trick or treating. I would like every-

one to keep in mind that even though there are some individuals who have given Halloween a bad reputation by conducting dark rituals, not everyone celebrates that way. This holiday is meant to bring joyful celebration of life and to commemorate the end of the summer. Everyone can celebrate whatever and however they want but please keep in mind that you should educate yourself on something before you make claims about it, especially if it has to do with someone’s culture. It’s time to put these rumors to rest and treat every culture with re-

Beware of Halloween ghosts

With Halloween right around the corner we’re sure to run into some unfriendly witches, trolls, but above all else, ghosts. I don’t Makaylah mean the Chavez Opinion stereoEditor typical, spooky ghosts that people either fear or center reality shows around, those at least give some type of hint that what they’re about to do will haunt you forever. Oh no, I’m talking about the immature, coward and selfish ghosts that we’ve all encountered at some point in time who vanish out

of the blue with no explanation as to why. With that being said, let’s talk about ghosting. The talking stage in a romantic aspect is vital in the formation of a potential relationship. This is when you really start to build a connection and fall into a routine of daily communication with someone who has piqued your interest. However, sometimes things don’t always go in the direction we had hoped, hence the term ghosting. Ghosting is essentially when somebody you have been talking to suddenly cuts you off with no warning or explanation as to why and leaves you questioning yourself and everything that led up to that point. Let’s face it, we have

all, at some point or another, been ghosted. It’s a sucky feeling, especially when we had a genuine care for the person who chose to immaturely leave the way they did. Even though getting ghosted creates feelings of negativity in one’s self with thoughts of not being good enough and wondering what you did wrong, life goes on. We have to move on to the next. According to certified psychiatrist Margaret Seide, people who ghost usually do so for one of two reasons. The first reason is that the ghoster could not be the confrontational type and would rather dip than have an uncomfortable talk as to why they didn’t see it going any further.

The second reason is that they could have been balancing multiple other options the entire time and you just didn’t make the cut. The worst part is you’ll more than likely never know the reason they left. You’ll never get that closure you deserve. Yes, you’re going to be sad for a while, but eventually that feeling will go away and someone new will come along. People say they always come back but you can’t let them back in, not after what they did to you. You’re better than that and you’re better than them. So, a final word of advice to you: this spooky season be someone’s boo, not a ghost.

Letter to the Editor: Halloween for Elites Does anyone know how the rich people celebrate Halloween? Usually they have their butlers, maids, cooks, gardeners and professional contractors to help set up the main mansion party room and set up the back (10 acre) yard with all kinds of simple things like: A por-

table 200’ x 200’ haunted house, professional actors and actresses to dress up as evil bankers, politicians, CEOs and CLOWNS! They even help set up children’s gift bags with gifts that are from Neiman Marcus for the trick-or-treaters. Compare that lifestyle to

the average broke middle-class person or hungry poor class person in this country. The point is that we have a large corporation made wealth inequality problem in this country and it’s only going to get worse if we keep the same rigged economic system in place.

So for most of you I suggest you put on your best “fake happy face” because that’s all you can afford.

Literary Calaveras: a TAMUK Tradition Marco O. Íñiguez Alba| Lecturer

Literary Calaveras are humoristic parodies about living beings taken by Lady Death, la Muerte. These verses personify death in comical encounters with the living, alluding to particular questionable behaviors of a person. The living, in their attempt to elude death, struggle, negotiate, or

flounder, finally succumbing to entombment. Yet, in almost all cases, death ovewrcomes its opponent. The tradition is to write Calaveras about public personalities, people in power, politicians, neighborhood maladies or unfavorable social formations like the Border Wall, fracking, contamination, or natural disasters. The style is a popular vernacular,

¿Qué no ves…?

Si no vas a mejorar, No te quiero ver llorar

¿Cuántos llantos has oído? ¿Cuántas manos has tomado?

No sé, pregúntale a tu tía.
