ATB Financial’s new economic outlook to show continued decline

The good news is Alberta isn’t technically heading into a recession, but the bad news is the economy is still sliding in the wrong direction. ATB Financial released its economic outlook Tuesday morning. The report says Alberta’s GDP will be flat, maybe 0.4 per cent this year and a big part of that is because of struggles in the energy sector. ATB Financial Chief Economist Todd Hirsch says while this downturn isn’t as deep as what we’ve seen in 2009, it may linger around longer. “The second half of the year, things have kind of stabilized a little bit at a low level, but there’s still a lot of volatility in these oil prices and that will remain a challenge for Alberta in the second half of 2015,” he said. It’s not all doom and gloom: he says other sectors like forestry, tourism and agriculture

are doing very well; in fact, cattle prices are at record highs. Hirsch says he understands the challenges of people losing good paying jobs in oil and gas, but he says the province still added 38,000 new jobs over the last year. Still, the unemployment rate is expected to rise as high as 5.8 per cent next year before coming back down in 2017.

Calgary-based Chevron Canada Resources confirms plans to cut 130 jobs

Chevron Canada Resources has confirmed it is laying off 130 people as it restructures operations. Chevron spokesman Leif Sollid says the cuts are part of the company’s efforts to establish a competitive foundation in its key focus areas of Alberta, British Columbia and Newfoundland and Labrador, but declined to provide further details.

The job cuts amount to about 20 per cent of the company’s workforce of more than 600 full-time employees. Calgary-based Chevron Canada Resources has interests in crude oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids projects. Last December the company shelved plans to drill in the Beaufort Sea due to the “level of economic uncertainty in the industry.” The cuts do not affect Vancouver-based Chevron Canada Ltd., which is a separate subsidiary of Chevron Corp. that focuses on retail sales. It has a further 350 employees, according to the company website.

Dozens charged in Calgary prostitution stings

The Calgary Police Service has laid several charges in relation to two prostitution stings that took place earlier this year. One four-day operation, held between March 24 and March 27, targeted known strolls in the Beltline and Forest Lawn Industrial Areas, identified as being problem locations by police and the community. During the operation, 32 individuals were charged with obtaining sexual services for consideration. During the second operation, which ran from June 22 to June 25, police specifically targeted offenders attempting to purchase sexual services online from underage fe-

males. Following a four-day operation, four individuals were arrested. Nam Voong, Muneeb Uddin Alvi and Mark Kennedy from Calgary, as well as Justin James Harder from Ontario but living in Calgary, are facing various charges. It is estimated that 90 to 95 per cent of prostitution occurs indoors, facilitated online. The Police Service states prostitution is complex and it is hard to lay charges in relation to it, but add their highest priorities are cases that involve minors.

Heat, wind, smoke spur severe Calgary allergy season

Even people who’ve never had hay fever are noticing irritation for the first time this year, according to a Calgary doctor who told 660News a severe allergy season has moved in. The same hot, dry conditions keeping firefighters busy are putting a lot more reactants like pollen into the air. Dr. Joel Doctor said even those who have never had hay fever in the past are noticing it this season and should head to the pharmacy for some antihistamines. “If symptoms are more severe, simply taking an antihistamine alone will not control

the problem and changing to a different antihistamine similarly will not control the problem either,” Doctor said. In those cases a trip to a physician and a prescription may be in order. Doctor said a person’s key defence is to start taking allergy medications early and consistently. “It’s really hard to get on top of the symptoms once they get quite severe.” Doctor said, for some, the symptoms are being made worse by the small amounts of smoke wafting into the Calgary area from northern fires.

Police locate youth missing since Sunday

Cold Lake prepares to host hundreds of evacuees fleeing wildfires in Saskatchewan Hundreds of evacuees have been expected to arrive in Cold Lake as they escape wildfires in Saskatchewan. According to the Cold Lake Mayor Craig Copeland up to 1,100 people were expected to arrive Sunday and will be staying at the Cold Lake Energy Centre. Mayor Copeland told there were cots set up and they planned to use the cafeteria at the high school to feed everyone. “The basic needs of the evacuees are provided for the same as our shelters we’re operating in the province with items such as cots blankets hygiene meals and kits to help keep people as comfortable as possible,” Cindy Fuchs with the Red Cross explained. The evacuees include those from the Town of La Ronge, the Village of Air Ronge and the Lac La Ronge Indian Band. Executive director of Saskatchewan’s Emergency Management and Fire Safety explained the fire near the Town of La Ronge jumped the fail-safe line Saturday night causing officials to call for an evacuation of the nearby town. “Approximately 1,136 people were actually registered and transported out. “Many thousands of individuals evacuated on their own.” He estimated about 500 of those were on their way to Cold Lake. A representative

Calgary police say they’ve found a 12-year-old boy who went missing from his southeast home on Sunday. Isaiah Cote-Stoffels, 12, was last seen at about 2:30 p.m. on July 5 in the 1300 block of 35 Street S.E. He was reported missing when he failed to return home. from the Ministry of Social Services said the government was still holding on to vacancies in Regina and Saskatoon, which was why people had to be sent out of their province. “We need to maintain some capacity because our numbers will fluctuate within the province,” Kerry Kempf said. Canada’s Minister of Defence said he expected to be sending in about 1,000 members of the army to help combat the fire. “There is support work needed to dig ditches and that kind of manual work that we expect the army will be asked to do,” Jason Kenney explained. Donations will not be accepted from the public at this time. Evacuees who have questions or may be in need of support have been advised to call Canadian Red Cross, 1-888-953-3463. Cold Lake is about 295 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.

Isaiah was expected home at 8:30 p.m., but called and said he would be late. The boy failed to turn up later. Police say that the boy returned home late Monday night. They thank the public for their assistance in the case.

Oilsands cleanup may not be adequately funded: Alberta AG Alberta’s auditor general says the province may not be requiring oilsands companies to save enough money to ensure their gigantic mines are cleaned up at the end of their life. “If there isn’t an adequate program in place to ensure that financial security is provided by mine operators ... mine sites may either not be reclaimed as intended or Albertans could be forced to pay the reclamation costs,” says a report released Monday by Merwan Saher. Saher says current rules could allow companies to overestimate the value of their resources. That allows them to delay increases to the amount of money they sock away to fund cleanup. As well, Saher says the government hasn’t met its own targets when it comes to ensuring each operator is assessed a large enough amount to pay for reclamation. Only about one-quarter of the audits promised in 2011 have been completed.

“The level of verification activity has been insufficient,” says the report. Alberta Environment Minister Shannon Phillips said the government agreed with Saher’s concerns and accepts his recommendations. The Mine Financial Security Program was instituted in 2011 and currently holds security deposits from eight oilsands mines and 19 coal mines. The fund holds $1.6 billion to cover about $21 billion in eventual liabilities. The program allows companies to keep remediation funds low until the mine has less than 15 years of life left, or until the company has less than three times as many assets as liabilities. But current rules can help companies inflate the asset side of that equation. Saher also noted the rules don’t take into account long-term price swings such as the current downturn.

Cosby said he got drugs to give women for sex: AP Bill Cosby admitted in 2005 that he secured quaaludes with the intent of giving them to young women he wanted to have sex with and that he gave the sedative to at least one woman and “other people,” according to documents obtained Monday by The Associated Press. Cosby’s lawyers insisted that two of the accusers knew they were taking quaaludes from the comedian, according to the unsealed documents. Nevertheless, attorneys for some of the numerous women suing Cosby seized on the testimony as powerful corroboration of what they have been saying all along: that he drugged and raped women. The AP had gone to court to compel the release of a deposition in a sexualabuse case filed by former Temple University employee Andrea Constand, the first of a cascade of lawsuits against him that have severely damaged his good-guy image. Cosby’s lawyers had objected to the release of the material, arguing it would embarrass him. Ultimately, a judge unsealed just a small portion of the deposition. “The stark contrast between Bill Cosby, the public moralist and Bill Cosby, the subject of

serious allegations concerning improper (and perhaps criminal) conduct is a matter as to which the AP -- and by extension the public -has a significant interest,” U.S. District Judge Eduardo Robreno wrote. Cosby, with his oft-espoused views on topics including childrearing, family life, education and crime, “has voluntarily narrowed the zone of privacy that he is entitled to claim,” the judge wrote. Cosby, who starred as Dr. Cliff Huxtable on “The Cosby Show” from 1984 to 1992, settled Constand’s lawsuit under confidential terms in 2006. His lawyers in the Philadelphia case did not immediately return telephone calls seeking comment on Monday. Constand consented to be identified but did not want to comment, her lawyer said.

WHO suggests hiking tobacco tax to curb use Taxing cigarettes up to 75 per cent of their retail price is among the most effective ways to reduce tobacco use, but too few governments levy high enough taxes, according to a World Health Organization global report released Tuesday. The WHO’s 2015 report on the global tobacco epidemic said more than half of the world’s countries -- encompassing about 2.8 billion people -- had implemented at least one of six sets of agreed-upon tobacco-control policies. The figure is up from 2.3 billion when the previous report was released in 2013. But it said many nations continue to have very low tobacco tax rates or no taxes at all. The report and officials said tobacco taxation could be a key source of funding to implement health and development goals. Around 6 million people die each year from tobacco-related diseases, and the number will rise to more than 8 million a year by 2030 unless strong measures are taken, the WHO said. “Raising taxes on tobacco products is one of the most effective -- and cost-effective -- ways to reduce consumption of products that kill,

while also generating substantial revenue,” WHO Director-General Margaret Chan said in a statement. “I encourage all governments to look at the evidence, not the industry’s arguments, and adopt one of the best win-win policy options available for health.” The tobacco-control policies introduced seven years ago under the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control include monitoring and preventing tobacco use, protecting people from tobacco smoke by implementing a comprehensive smoke-free law, offering to help tobacco users quit the habit, warning people about the dangers of tobacco, enforcing bans on tobacco advertising and raising tobacco taxes.

Western wildfires: Hundreds of fires burn, thousands out of their homes Wildfires are burning across the parched West. Here is a look at the situation in Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia: — There have been 582 wildfires in Saskatchewan so far this season. As of Tuesday morning, 113 were active. — There were 184 fires burning in British Columbia Tuesday and 93 in Alberta. — About 600 soldiers from Edmonton have been deployed to northern Saskatchewan; 360 of them are to receive fire training in Prince Albert and be deployed to fire lines. — Another 500 troops from Shilo, Man., are on standby. — About 600 firefighters, including some from

Ontario, have been battling fires in northern Saskatchewan for nearly two weeks. — Fifty-four Saskatchewan communities have been evacuated or partially evacuated. — The Saskatchewan government says 7,320 people have registered as evacuees and are staying in hotels or shelters in Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, North Battleford and Cold Lake, Alta. It estimates 2,000 others are staying with family and friends. — Fires have destroyed 12 homes, remote cabins and other structures in Saskatchewan. — Nearly 4,000 square kilometres of forest have burned in Saskatchewan’s high-priority zones this year.

B.C. asks Ontario, Australia for help in battling wildfires across province VANCOUVER – All available crews have been committed to fight against British Columbia’s burning forests, a situation that has forced officials to triage response to the worst fires and call in reinforcements from as far away as Australia. On Tuesday, 184 fires were burning across B.C., engaging more than 1,000 personnel and triggering evacuation orders and alerts, as well as air-quality advisories. Kurtis Isfeld of the BC Wildfire Service said 23 of those fires had broken out Monday and the ministry predicts 30 new wildfires will start every day as dry conditions grow more acute. “The availability of resources is at a critical level, and any significant increase in fire load will be difficult for us to manage,” he said. “As such, we’ve begun prioritizing fires based on human life and safety, property, critical values, critical habitat and timber, and before any of those the safety of our responders will come first and foremost.” He said all the service’s available crews are engaged around the province, including 622

contractors. The government had already spent more than $90 million this season fighting the fires, well over the $63 million set aside in the budget. Forests Minister Steve Thomson said 70 firefighters from Ontario were expected to arrive in B.C. on Tuesday, and the province will be getting help from Australian crews, while firefighters from New Zealand will likely head to Alberta. Thomson said he didn’t have specific numbers of how many firefighters would be coming from Australia and New Zealand. Smoke from two wildfires near Whistler is contributing to very poor air quality in the town renowned for its outdoor activities. Environment Canada’s air quality health index lists the risk for Whistler at 10, and everyone, especially people with respiratory problems or related concerns, is being warned to stay indoors if possible. Dr. James Lu of Vancouver Coastal Health said air-quality advisories are also still in place in the Sea-to-Sky corridor, the Sunshine Coast, Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley because of air pollution from the smoke.

Canadians like their jobs, but feel overworked: survey Canadians sure like getting down to business. According to the Staples Advantage Workplace Index, despite 49 per cent of us feeling burnt out, 89 per cent of us are happy at work and are motivated to rise up the ranks. Scott D’Cuhna, Vice President of Marketing, said there’s at least one explanation for this mentality. “The changing demographics, with younger members of the workforce that have grown up in a digital way, always feeling on,” he said. “It seems to be the new reality of everybody,

right? You don’t ever turn your phone off.” D’Cuhna said despite sleeping with our phones, four out of ten of us value work life balance. We also appreciate jobs have more flexibility, more perks, and better technology. “I don’t think it’s a question of less work, it’s really more a question of how the work is being done, and what employers can do to try and engage employees and make them happier,” D’Cuhna said.

Smarter approach to defence spending could save $10 billion: report A new report says there are smarter ways to spend scarce defence dollars that could save $10 billion while at the same time boosting Canada’s military capabilities. The study by UBC professor Michael Byers says the government needs to rethink major purchases like the F-35 fighter jets and reallocate funding to the military’s more immediate priorities. Byers, who once ran for the New Democrats, says current procurement decisions are holding back the Canadian Forces’ ability to contribute more meaningfully to missions like the one currently underway in Iraq and Syria. For example, he says the air force needs more planes that could provide closer air support to soldiers and more trucks to help get them supplies. But money is earmarked instead for equipment like submarines, which he argues aren’t a necessity, or the F-35s, which may not be the right plane for Canada’s needs. In total, the report makes 23 recommendations, which also touch on rebooting the entire defence procurement process.

Jindal criticises Obama, Hillary over gay marriage views Indian-American Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal has lashed out at US President Barack Obama and Democratic presidential aspirant Hillary Clinton for their views on same sex marriage, alleging that they evolved their views based on opinion polls. “Both the President and Hillary evolved their views because of opinion polls. They can read opinion polls just like the Supreme Court,” said Jindal, the 13th Republican aspirant to aim for the White House in 2016 election. “My view of marriage is based on my Christian faith. No early court’s decision is going to change that. I think marriage is between a man and a woman,” Jindal, 44, told ‘Meet the Press’ of NBC News in an interview on Sunday. Obama has said the ruling is a victory for America while Clinton also praised the landmark decision of the US Supreme Court which legalised same sex marriage, holding that gay people can get married in all 50 states of the country. “I think they’re all created equal in god’s eyes. And I think we need to respect and love those we disagree with. I think we can have religious liberty without discrimination. My views on marriage aren’t evolving with the polls. I can

read polls just like the President can. It’s based on my faith. I think it should remain between a man and a woman,” he said. Jindal said America has moved towards a much better view on race relations. “I’ve said we need to stop viewing ourselves as hyphenated Americans. We’re not African-Americans, or Indian-Americans, we’re all Americans. I think viewing people by the color of their skin is the dumbest way to view people,” he said. “So, I think it’s offensive to equate evangelical Christians, Catholics, others that view marriage as between a man and a woman as being racist. We’re not racist. We love our fellow man. We think we’re all equal under god’s eyes. We simply believe marriage - we don’t believe we should change the definition of marriage simply because of opinion polls or because of a court that, quite frankly, isn’t looking at the constitution,” Jindal said. Jindal’s popularity rating in his own home State is quite low and when asked about it, he said he does not take decisions based on opinion polls. “If I were afraid of polls, I never would have been elected in two landslide elections, winning the highest percentage in our state’s last election for governor,” he said.

Scotland Yard team in Pakistan to investigate 2010 murder of MQM leader A two-member team of Scotland Yard arrived in Pakistan on Monday to interrogate the suspects believed to have been involved in the 2010 murder of Dr Imran Farooq, a senior leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), a party of Urdu-speaking Muslims who had migrated to Pakistan after partition in 1947. Dr Imran Farooq was killed outside his home in Green Lane, Edgware, London in a brutal manner on 16 September 2010. Farooq’s post-mortem examination revealed that he died from multiple stab wounds and blunt trauma to the head. Less than two weeks ago, Pakistan had arrested two men near the PakAfghan border in Chaman region of Baluchistan accused in the murder of Imran Farooq. The persons -- identified as Mohsin Ali and Khalid Shamim -- were wanted in the murder case of Dr Imran Farooq. Last year, the BBC had mentioned Khalid Shamim in its report as a person believed to have helped the return of alleged murderers of Imran Farooq to Pakistan. The other -- Mohsin Ali -- was mentioned in the same report as one of the two suspects who were believed to have travelled from Pakistan to London to assassinate Dr Farooq. The MQM, however, has disassociated itself from both the suspects. While refuting news circulating in local media mills for last several days about the presence of a seven-member team of Scotland Yard in Pakistan to quiz the suspects, the interior ministry said that earlier reports of a six to seven member team in Islamabad were baseless. Farooq, the slain leader, had claimed asylum in Britain in 1999. He was wanted in Pakistan over scores of charges including torture and murder but always claimed the accusations were politically-motivated. Local media quoted a senior official of Federal Investigation Agency as saying that the British

investigators also want to record statements of some MQM leaders in Karachi but it is up to the government whether or not to allow the team to do so. Another anonymous FIA official was quoted by media as saying: “It’s a reciprocal approach. Our team may travel to the UK to collect evidence pertaining to BBC’s damning report on Indian funding to the MQM.” The MQM is a party of Urduspeaking Muslims who migrated to Pakistan after partition in 1947. Its chief,Altaf Hussain, lives in self-imposed exile in London, where he is being investigated by British authorities over money-laundering allegations. Pakistani politicians have advised the MQM to take legal action against the BBC over its latest report about its involvement in receiving funds from Indian authorities to avoid further damage to the party and its leadership.

Stop calling terror group ‘Islamic State’: Cameron tells media British Prime Minister David Cameron has called on the BBC and other media outlets to avoid using the term Islamic State in reference to the terror outfit, saying it gives undue credibility to the “poisonous death cult”. “I wish the BBC would stop calling it ‘Islamic State’ because it is not an Islamic state,” he told the?BBC’s ‘Today’?programme. Cameron believes it gives undue credibility to the “poisonous death cult” that is “seducing” young Britons to go and fight for the terrorist organisation in Syria and Iraq. The Prime Minister preferred the use of the term ISIL ?- the abbreviation of the self-proclaimed Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. “What it is, is an appalling barbarous regime that is a perversion of the religion of Islam and many Muslims listening to this programme will recoil every time they hear the words.’So-called’ or Isil is better,” he said.

Cameron was speaking after it emerged that the number of Britons dead in the attack by an Islamist gunman on a beach resort in Tunisia on Friday could go upto 30. He warned that the fight against the barbaric terrorist organisation was “the struggle of our generation.” “We have to fight it with everything we can,” he asserted. Cameron also pledged a “full spectrum” response to the attack by Seifeddine Resgui, who was gunned down himself by police after his murderous rampage that left a total of 38 people dead on the Sousse beach resort. British officials have already confirmed 17 of his victims are British but Cameron said the country should be prepared for the news of more UK casualties as officials continue to identify those killed on the beach.

lawmakers. “What to me is so great about this event is raising new leaders in the Indo-American Community and this community as we can see is definitely expanding politically. I’ve always been impressed by this community that

is always ready to fill new roles and responsibilities in our great country,” senator Dan Sullivan said in his remarks. “I am so please to be able to say how much we appreciate the Indo-American Community Service that is growing rapidly in its success and its influence in Illinois as well as in DC,” said Congressman Robin Kelly.Congressman Danny Davis spoke about India being largest democracy in the world and Indians contributions here in US. He pledged to continue to support IndianAmerican Interns at his office, a media release said. Indian-American community comprise about 3.1 million people alone and are the second-largest self-reported single- race Asian ancestry group after Chinese Americans.

‘Indian-Americans provide important bridge between India, US’

The small but influential Indian-American community provides an important bridge between India and the United States, American lawmakers have said. “We look forward to building the relationship between India and the United States and we thank the community here for the bridge that they help provide so that these two great democracies can work ever closer together for a common goal,” Congressman Ed Royce said. Royce, Chairman of the powerful House Foreign Affairs Committee, was speaking at a leadership reception organised by the Indo-American Community Services, a Chicago-based Indian community organisation. The event was attended by a number of US

Commodity prices up, but drought fears linger for farmers

May was another good month for commodities. The Latest Commodities Report from Patricia Mohr at Scotiabank says prices were up for the second consecutive month, thanks to higher demand for energy. Mohr expects oil prices will continue to rise slowly in the coming months, but it will be a while before that leads to increased activity in Canada or south of the border. She also says people are closely tracking the weather because of its possible impact on agriculture, especially in our part of the country. “Some agricultural experts say that if there isn’t significant rain in Saskatchewan and Al-

berta by July 10, that we may actually have drought in that part of Western Canada,” she said. If drought conditions do develop, Mohr says consumers will be hit with higher cereal prices, adding it also doesn’t appear as if beef prices are coming down anytime soon.

City Council votes down measure to allow secondary suites

A move that would have allowed secondary suites in four inner-city wards has been voted down by city council. By a vote of 9 to 6, City Council rejected the proposal to allow the suites in wards 7, 8, 9 and 11. The bylaw, which previously passed first reading, would have eliminated zoning restrictions for basement dwellings. Speaking before the vote, Councillor Brian Pincott said it was shameful, a decision on the issue took so long. “We the 15 of us tie ourselves in knots, and we compromise and then we try to find another compromise on top of a compromise, and we

do another compromise on top of that compromise,” he said. Also on the “yes” side with Pincott, were councillors Woolley, Carra, Colley-Urquhart, Farrell and Nenshi.

Some Calgarians skipping Stampede The “Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth” is about to open in Calgary. The Stampede kicks off this Thursday, July 2 and runs until July 13. There are some worries this year that out-of-town attendance might suffer because the slow economy is expected to adversely affect summer travel. However, according to one city travel agent, that same downturn means more Calgarians are looking at “stay-cations” this year. “Certainly I’m seeing with younger families a tendency to go to Vancouver or Victoria, “said Lesley Kayter, the Travel Lady. “And there’s a growing trend towards camping.” Kayter said there’s a bit of a love it or leave

attitude towards the Stampede amongst locals and that could translate into greater attendance if those lovers choose to stay home. But if you’re in the “hater”” category, Kayter said there are some pretty good travel deals out there, including week-long trips to Mexico for under $300 and Caribbean cruises.

In search for ‘prince charming,’ Luka Magnotta joins dating site for prisoners Luka Rocco Magnotta, the convicted killer whose grisly crimes made headlines around the world, is looking for a “prince charming” on a matchmaking website for prisoners. Magnotta’s profile was posted Sunday on Canadian Inmates Connect Inc., a website that tries to hook up lonesome convicts — some behind bars for violent offences like first-degree murder — with potential companions on the outside. “Seeking single white male, 28 – 38 years of age, white and in shape,” reads a blurb the website’s founder says was written by Magnotta himself. “One who is loyal, preferably educated, financially and emotionally stable for a long term committed relationship. If you think you could be my prince charming, send me a detailed letter with at least 2 photos.” The profile features two photos of the former stripper and prostitute, who was convicted in December of first-degree murder for the 2012

Montreal killing and dismemberment of university student Jun Lin. In both images, Magnotta is wearing an unbuttoned white dress shirt. Magnotta, who’s serving a life sentence, lists his expected release date as 2037. He describes himself as a “single white male, 33, 5’11” and 175 lbs with dark hair and blue eyes.” “Only those I deem compatible will receive a response,” he writes on the profile, which also includes his current postal address north of Montreal: Archambault Institution, in SainteAnne-des-Plaines, Que. “Serious inquiries only please. All unsolicited mail will be discarded.” Melissa Fazzina, who created the site about four and half years ago, said Magnotta sent the information to her through a contact. The application and $35 fee arrived via regular mail — convicts don’t have Internet access — about 10 days ago.

Salman Khan reveals first look of Hero remake Salman Khan shared the first look of Hero remake, starring Sooraj Pancholi on Thursday evening. Hero, a joint production of filmmaker Subhash Ghai and Salman Khan, will mark the debut of Aditya Pancholi’s son Sooraj and Suniel Shetty’s daughter Athiya. The film is slated to hit theatres on September 4. Sooraj and Athiya are stepping into the shoes of Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Sheshadri respectively. Directed by Nikhil Advani, Hero is a remake of Ghai’s 1983 movie of the same name.

Amjad Sabri, a prominent qawwali singer from Pakistan, has planned to sue the producers of Bajrangi Bhaijaan for using a qawwali, to which he claims to own the copyright, without permission. On the other hand, the country’s largest record label, EMI Pakistan, says it owns the song’s copyright. “Revamping the qawwali without my permission or consent is simply unethical and inappropriate, Amjad Sabri told Urdu newspaper, Daily Express. “It is the property of my family and will continue to be so for the coming seven generations. This is an asset of my father Ghulam Farid Sabri and my uncle Maqbool Sabri. The original qawwali was written by Purnam Allahabadi, composed by Maqbool Sabri, and performed by the Sabri Brothers in 1975. Sabri also feels Bollywood has not done justice to the reworked version, composed by Pritam Chakraborty and performed by Adnan Sami.

“They have not done justice to the heritage of our elders. I have hired a lawyer to sort out this matter, he said. Meanwhile, EMI Pakistan will send separate legal notices to Salman Khan Films and Kabir Khan Films (the film’s producers), Media Concepts (the company responsible for airing its music in Pakistan), and 8xM and Jalwa music channels (subsidiaries of Media Concepts). “The qawwali ‘Bhar do jholi’ is an EMI product, not only released by us but also recorded and produced under our banner. None of the authorities involved in the making of Bajrangi Bhaijan approached us to acquire the rights. So, we have sent them legal notices, Zeeshan Chaudhry, EMI Pakistan’s general manager, told The Express Tribune. Watch Adnan Sami in Bhardo Jholi from Bajrangi Bhaijaan: Chaudhry also said the company had legal documents to prove that Sabri wasn’t the owner.

Reports now suggest that Priyanka Chopra was offered the female lead in the film. However, the Mary Kom actor wants her cousin Parineeti Chopra to play the part. Priyanka Chopra has recommended Parineeti’s name to the makers, as she wants them to offer her Sultan, which she feels will help revive the latter’s career. Veteran actor Rishi Kapoor is on a roll these days. After making news with his Twitter post on Damini co-star Meenakshi Sheshadri, Rishi ensured the spotlight continued to be on him: this time by sharing the first trailer of his next film, which also stars Abhishek Bachchan. Helmed by Oh My God-fame director Umesh Shukla, All iS Well traces the story of father-son duo, Abhishek and Rishi. Supriya Pathak plays Rishi’s wife while Asin essays Abhishek’s love lady. Rishi Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan, Asin and Abhishek Bachchan at the trailer launch of All is Well. Abhishek plays a disturbed son, traumatised by his father’s wayward ways, and for torturing his mother. Turns out that It is not the father’s fault but something is terribly wrong around the entire family. From what the trailer reveals, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub plays the villain in this film. This is the first time the actor, who has been critically acclaimed for his performances in hit films like Raanjhana and Tanu Weds Manu Returns, will be seen in a negative role. The 2:49 minute-long video is not exceptionally funny, and fails to pique the audience’s interest. However, with veterans like Rishi Kapoor and Supriya Pathak, supported by good actors like Ayyub and others, here’s hoping the film is much more (and better) than what the trailer offers.

Salman’s bhai power: Bajrangi Bhaijaan song to take over prime time TV

When it comes to promoting his own films, Salman Khan is Bollywood’s undisputed king. As part of his pre-release plans for Bajrangi Bhaijaan, we hear that the Dabangg star is taking over TV in a big way. Just before the film’s release, Salman will be seen in Indian Idol Junior and Dance India Dance, Comedy Nights with Kapil, and even in a few soaps including Yeh Hai Mohabbatein, Qubool Hai and Taarak Mehta ka Ooltah Chashmah.

My daughter is off limits: Abhishek on Twitter abuse

Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan, who was recently trolled on Twitter by a user, says that being a public figure he is open to “bouquets and brickbats” but his daughter Aaradhya is off limits. Recently, a Twitter user commented that Abhishek’s daughter Aaradhya would not like his movies like Drona and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom when she grows up. Abhishek retorted sharply and slammed the user for bringing his daughter into the picture, following which the tweet was deleted. “I do understand that both me and my wife and my parents (Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan) are public figures but my daughter is off limits. I am not here to talk about her. I said what I had to,” the actor said when asked about the incident at an event. The All Is Well star is active on social networking sites and has learnt to take things in his stride. “I wasn’t deeply hurt. This is something I am used to. I always have this attitude that if you can’t stand the heat then get out of the location. If you are on public platform you have to be ready for brickbats and the bouquets ... and I am fine with that. I have always taken things in my stride.” Abhishek also said that he appreciates the fact that the tweet was deleted as the guy probably realised that he had gone a bit too far in what he had to say. “He apologised and removed the tweet... I appreciate that. I think when you are in public domain it is important to allow freedom of speech... it is a constitutional right. But it is also important to take objection... it is my platform and he tweeted something to me, I replied. If you are on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram this is going to happen... it’s healthy, fine and fun most of the times,” he added.

“We are doing multi city media conferences to reach to a larger audience. Bajrangi Bhaijaan is a family entertainer and festival release. The film will be highly visible on television to reach out to the family audiences,” a spokesperson of the film’s production house revealed.

Robert De Niro is the only person whose feet I’ve touched: Farhan Akhtar

Farhan Akhtar has directed Shah Rukh Khan, written dialogues for Aamir Khan, and when on camera, he’s played everything from a rock star and a sprinter to a vacationing magazine writer. In fact, to play sprinter Milkha Singh in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Farhan put in enough physical selftorture that his trainers were convinced he was ready to compete professionally. But don’t call him a ‘method actor’, because this actor and filmmaker maintains that the moniker belongs to Hollywood great, Robert De Niro. Successful movie people are always talking about how much they admire even more successful movie stars, but Farhan’s De Niro fawning is up a whole other gradient: “He’s the only person whose feet I’ve ever touched in my life,” he reveals. Farhan’s met the man twice, but says that he was tongue-tied. “It was a weird thing and I didn’t know what to say. After ‘How are you, sir?’ I’d get uncomfortable,” shares the 41-year-old actor

in an interview given to GQ India, in their July edition. In the ’80s, a young Farhan saw De Niro play Al Capone in The Untouchables at Sterling Cinema, and was amazed that De Niro would do so much for a role. “(He) put on all that weight, shaved his head, just for those seven or eight scenes. That kind of dedication is just amazing,” he says.

There is something genuine about Alia: Kareena Kapoor

While Alia Bhatt has gone on record to call herself a fan of Kareena Kapoor Khan, the latter, too, feels that the young actor has the potential to make it big in Bollywood. “I think Alia Bhatt is supremely talented, and is a lovely girl. I have only seen her work in Student Of The Year (2012), but I still like her. Her vibe is nice, she’s relaxed. When you meet her, you can tell that there is something genuine about Alia,” says Kareena.

Waiting for the release of her next, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Kareena says that having spent 15 years in the industry, she’s no longer part of the rat race. “I’m in a secure and happy place. I can do a song with Sidharth Malhotra, at the same time I’ve played Anil Kapoor’s wife a decade ago (in Bewafaa; 2005) and now I’m playing his nephew’s (Arjun Kapoor) wife (in a film being directed by R Balki). It’s amazing,” says the 34-year-old. Looking back, Kareena says that she always knew that acting was her first love. But would she ever be something else if not an actor? “Since I love travel so much, I would’ve been an air hostess. Considering I’m always ready to get on an aircraft and leave, that would be ideal, because I’d get to see new and exciting places,” says

Kareena. Ask the actor why she is off social media and she’s quick to say that she’s never wanted to be on it in the first place. “I was never on it to be off it. But I have fans on social media who keep me alive. But, I don’t feel the need to be on it. And between my work and Saif (Ali Khan; husband) and my travelling, I have my hands full,” says Kareena.

Deepika Padukone wants to keep Piku earrings Actor Deepika Padukone has made a special request to the makers of hit film Piku. She wants to keep the earrings from the film as memento. “Piku has been an extremely special film for me so I wanted to keep something that will remind me of the film even years later,” Deepika said in a statement. Deepika is seen in the role of a selfless daughter, who spends more time listening to constipation tales of her father (played by Amitabh Bachchan) than on her professional or marital pursuits. Shoojit Sircar’s Piku not only mesmerised moviegoers with its storyline, but also got an admirer in President Pranab Mukherjee.

He not only loved the film, but also found the ‘Bengali-Hindi accent’ in the slice-of-life family entertainer flawless. The movie also starred Irrfan Khan.

I can’t cast myself, I’m not that stupid: Karan Johar

Filmmaker Karan Johar made his acting debut in Bollywood with director Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet. The film didn’t become a hit, but Karan’s performance was appreciated by the critics. Now, he says that he would never cast himself in a movie made by him. “I can’t cast myself; I’m not that stupid,” says Karan, adding, “Not even one person has offered me a role. I’m waiting eagerly for some offer, at least a poor offer, which I can refuse.”

The 43-year-old says that he worked hard on his acting, but it seems it didn’t ring a bell with anyone. “I tried my best, but I think nobody wants to see me act in films,” he says.

HOME & LIVING

All for an eco-friendly lifestyle There are several eco-friendly changes that home owners can opt for, without giving up on basic comforts. Merely making a few small changes in your daily routine, can have considerable positive repercussions on the environment. For example: - Home owners can urge their housing society, complex or building officials to opt for solarpowered units. These units can be either used to supply hot water to residents or to supply electricity to the common area lighting fixtures. Not only will this help in substantially lowering electricity and maintenance bills but it also reduces the emission of carbon dioxide into the environment. - Avoid throwing oil or any type of chemicals down the drain, since it will contaminate the wa-

ter table and eventually end up polluting the very sources that supply water to our homes. - When installing your air-conditioner, make sure that it is located away from direct sunlight. If that is not possible, have a wooden shelter built around the air-conditioner, which provides it with some shade and helps it to run more efficiently. - Include more indoor plants in your decor. It not only refreshes and revitalises a room’s decor but also acts as an air filter. Remember that you should water your plants only when the top layer of soil seems dry. - Opt for reusable water containers to carry your water when you go outdoors, instead of buying bottled water. Besides saving on expense, you’re also reducing the use of plastic bottles that are harmful to the environment.

5 ways to make baby shower fun Are you planning to hold a baby shower in the near future? Here are some activities that can be made to make the event even more fun. Not only are these crafty and useful for the mother-to-be, but they can also be a station for the guests to showcase their talent and involve them while they are just mingling. So, after the elders are done with the prayers and blessing the motherto-be, bring out some fun. OnEsies or stencil bibs Keep stencils, bibs and different colours ready. Ask guests to use stencils and paint images, like heart, circles or anything else they feel like on them. It’s a fun activity and parents can later use the bibs, take pictures and can even show it to the friends who drew them. Hair accessories Make good use of your guests’ crafting skills by having a hair bow-making station. You can make a few as examples and print out instructions or just let them work on their own creations. Either way, the new baby will be outfitted in adorable headwear.

Create an ABC book Take a scrap book and write an alphabet on each page. Later, when guests arrive, ask them to draw and colour an image corresponding to the alphabet. The guests can even ask their children to fill colour in the images. Get this scrap book laminated to present it to your kid. Wishing tree Make a small tree using twigs and small branches and spray paint them. Put it in a large vase. Keep small post-it-sized note cards nearby for the guests to write wishes or advice to the new parents. The notes can be put on the tree using a ribbon. Later, the wishes and advices can be slid into a photo book. Baby song game Give each player a piece of paper and a pen and as you play a few seconds of each song, they have to guess the song title and artist. They get a point for each correct title and each correct artist. The winner gets a prize.

Keep the nursery gender-neutral with these ideas One of the first things that expecting moms and their supportive husbands plan while preparing to welcome their newborn is to design their nursery. While many sex-specific themes are available for reference, you can give your child’s room an elegant twist by keeping it neutral. Apart from avoiding the girly pink and boyish blue, here are some interesting ideas that can lend themselves to the nursery without screaming the sex of the child aloud... Choose a simple theme When you start designing the nursery, spin off from a neutral theme.Instead of opting for fairytales and colourbased ones, go for interesting ones like puzzles, nature or holidays, for instance. Keep a central design One of the best ways to work around a theme is to choose a motif around which you can create

the rest of the designs. Some of the tried-andtested ones are nature, transport and geometrical shapes. Throw in some alphabets and animals Try incorporating stuffed animal toys and the alphabet into the decor. Display large letters and numbers on wall racks or line one shelf with stuffed toys. Make the nursery a playground To keep your child physically active, you can use mini slides, word builders and toy houses to decorate the nursery .Make sure none of them have sharp edges which can hurt the kid. Opt for walls and floorings with geometric patterns Subtle, low-key patterns and prints like simple stripes and helixes make the nursery look chic and elegant. While opting for shape shifters, remember to used toned-down colours that are not gaudy.

Take care of your appliances this season While monsoons are synonymous with romance, it also brings along with it a lot of woes, home care being the major one. Much has been written about rainproofing your home, however there’s one area that we tend to overlook — the electronic appliances. They are the first to get damaged in this season. Here’s what you can do to ensure that they function smoothly even in the rains... Ensure proper grounding for your appliances The moisture in the air spells bad news for your appliances; there is always a chance of your appliances emitting current. Make sure all electronic appliances in the house are properly grounded. This will prevent damage by the high power static currents arising out of lightning. Check if all your heavy power consuming appliances like home theatre system, refrigerator, ACs, geyser, microwaves, etc. are always three pinned as they can withstand more statics than two pinned plugs. Try not to operate these appliances bare feet, they might be unsafe.

Unplug it in heavy rains There a reason why several warnings to turn off and unplug appliances during heavy showers, thunder and lightening, are issued. The chances of sudden power cuts go up at around this time. This can seriously damage the appliances as they are not made to withstand such heavy power fluctuations. Frequently clean the appliances with dry cloth The moisture in the air can help fungal growth in your appliances. In fact they rust quickly during this season. To avoid this, make sure you must clean them frequently with dry cloth. Things like a CD player or USB port should be cleaned well, as they are compact. Run unused appliances once a fortnight Do not keep any appliances packed and lying in closed places for a long time during the monsoons. Things like vacuum cleaners that are rarely used should be operated once in a week or two to ensure they are not jammed or damaged, due to excessive moisture.

Yami Gautam finds her shoe size only in South East Asia!

Yami Gautam’s spacious apartment in Andheri is simple and basic — a reflection of her own style and personality. When it comes to style, Yami admits she’s gone from being a nerdy Chandigarh girl to an elegant Bollywood diva. Her shoe fetish is of epic proportions; you’ll find more shoes than clothes in her closet. Also, she’s quite the reader, as is evident by the massive book-shelf. What style means to you: I would hear actresses say that it’s about comfort and being yourself. I understood it after becomi n g one myself. It’s clichéd but true. I’ve also been a part of the race where you try hard to get the best designers for award functions, events, etc. But when I did a self-assessment, I realised that it’s important to understand your body type and see what looks great on you. The actor’s love for shoes takes her to South East Asia, courtesy her tiny feet. (HT Photo/ Ritwik Ghosh) At home, we’ll catch you wearing: Cotton harem pants and a tank top paired with some nice flats or Kolhapuri chappals. As basic as it gets. Shoe crazy: If I could have had my way, I

would’ve chopped off every possible heel from every shoe. I used to hate stilettoes. It took me a lot of time to understand how to walk in them and look graceful. And eventually you realise their importance. I have every basic colour in shoes. Shoes are important to me because I don’t do much with my clothes. h t t p : / / w w w. hindustantimes. com/Images/

popup/2015/7/48hrs22.jpg Bag person: You will always see big, chunky bags around me. I have always been fond of bags. Bags are extremely essential because I keep my books in them. Best cities to shop in: Hong Kong and Bangkok because I have tiny feet. I’m ridiculed by every stylist because they have to almost go to kids section to look for shoes; I don’t get my sizes here. So when I go to South East Asia for work, I shop for shoes. Go-to outfits: Dresses. There’s something very ‘easy’ about them. I especially like floral prints. I’m not a big fan of glitter or anything with too much sequins on it. I also love bright colours; you can effortlessly pair them with pumps, a hand bag and a nice watch. Go-to designers: I really like the way Masaba revolutionised the saree. I like how Sabyasachi got the Indian look back. Aki Narula is good with contemporary styling. Pankaj and Nidhi are great with their colour palette.

research... Sanjay Gandhi, his life and death have always been shrouded in mystery as has been his relationship with India’s own Iron lady and his mother, Indira Gandhi. I feel both challenged and privileged to be making this important film,” the National Awardwinning director said in a statement.

FTII stir: Students protest Gajendra Chauhan’s appointment

More student organisations have come in support of the students of Film and Television Institute of India. Over 200 students protesting the appointment of actor and BJP member Gajendra Chauhan as the chairman of FTII were detained on Friday by the Delhi Police. Besides students from FTII, others from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University and Delhi Technological University also joined in the protest. They held a demonstration outside the ministry of information and broadcasting at Shastri Bhavan here. “FTII is being saffronised and people close to

the BJP are being appointed as heads of cultural and art institutions,” said Kisley, a FTII student. Police said the detained were taken to the Parliament Street police station. “This is to ensure that the protest does not go out of hand,” an official said. The students also demanded that the FTII governing council should be reconstituted. The students of the institute earlier went on an indefinite strike, saying that Chauhan’s appointment was politically motivated.

The LGBT video is not about me: Monica Dogra Earlier this week, indie musician Monica Dogra received a lot of flak when she asked fans to help her source Rs 50 lakh to crowdfund a video based on the LGBT community. Even though, at the time of going to press, the crowdfunding website (ketto.org/shiver) showed that Rs 2.56 lakh had been raised, the initiative is yet to get the support it was perhaps expecting. Here, Monica clarifies her stance, and defends her video. “A lot of people believe that Rs 50 lakh is a big amount for a music video. I am asking for funds for a music video art project that has expanding goals. The project has a double-fold agenda intending to make transgender representation in pop culture more mainstream. The greater intention is to chisel away at gender binaries that exist around us. Depending on the amount of funds we raise, we’ll either make a music video, or an installation documentary art piece.” What do you make of this backlash? I just got into town. I was in California, USA, looking after my dad who hasn’t been keeping well for a month. I haven’t slept in three days. I think I have had too much time to process everything. Aside from just being tired and overwhelmed, I feel really good that so much attention has been given to my work before it’s even been made. Have you received any positive responses? The only positive responses have been from peo-

Choices made in college define you: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra

It is difficult to assimilate memories from my three years in college. It was a very vibrant time for me in SRCC (B.Com honours, batch of 1983). College is the time when you get out of your school uniform and enter a life with more freedom and choices. And with choices comes responsibility. Very soon, one realises that you are responsible for your own choices. The choices you make are what will define you. I think college is a great foundation for the times to come, and is not just a time to party. Students often have questions about whether to choose a course or opt for a college of their choice, if they aren’t getting both together. I feel that you must always go for the course. I have seen a lot of students who have gone for a certain college, but woh teen saal kharab ho jate hain. You must travel the road you want to travel or find a new path for yourself rather than listening to someone telling you, ‘yeh aacha hota hai’. As a friend, all I can say is that college is a cool time in your life. There is so much to imbibe. Colleges in Delhi University are closely knit and there is interaction with students from other colleges. Then there are festivals and cultural exchanges, where you get to meet people from all over the country. You get a chance to travel. I won’t call these distractions. I would say cultural experiences are more important than just academics. This will take you further in life. This does not mean that if you get into co-curricular activities, you should stop studying. But going only with one and not the other, is not such a good idea. There needs to be a balanced approach.

ple who are coming forth to defend who I am, as a person. But I just want to reiterate that this work is not about me. I’m not even a subject in the music video. I am just using whatever powers I may have, which, until this point, I thought were meek. But now with the backlash, I am realising that people feel that I have enough power to hamper an entire movement, or to misrepresent an entire group of people, which was never my intention. This project is about inclusion. What is the video about? It’s a fictional narrative that follows our protagonist, a young boy, who chances upon this palace, this mirage… we are using magic, mysticism and metaphors to tell a story. He meets a sisterhood comprising lesbians, transgenders, women — short, fat, tall and skinny — all representations of the feminine across humanity. You called the work a “high art project”. What did you mean? Music video, documentary film, art installation and live performances — I don’t know of any one term that describes all of them. I am very

sorry that I used a term like “high art”, because I had no idea that it would spark an instant image of western imperialist privilege, and that too, coming from my mouth — an NRI in India, God forbid! Now that I know, I will be extremely sensitive henceforth. What is the status of the project as of now? I have put a complete pause on the promotion of this campaign until my voice has been heard. I have been personally attacked. There is no point in me promoting something, when the only content out there is slanderous and misrepresenting the project. But this project will happen… I am more confident about it now. I am more certain of its positive impact. I need to reiterate that there is no part of me that needs to be doing this. It will not earn me any money. I’m doing this because I want to. I believe in it. I want to do it even more now, even if I have to self-fund it, which I know won’t happen. I actually can’t self-fund it (laughs). But it is happening. I can’t even feel the jet lag anymore; I only feel an insane amount of determination.

Salman Khan grooves to Mika’s voice in Aaj Ki Party Looks like Salman Khan has hit the home run with a final burst for the promotions of his upcoming film Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Soon after releasing a string of promos and songs for the film, the Dabangg star released another song on Friday: Aaj Ki Party, in Mika Singh’s voice. Not really a typical Salman song (this one isn’t as peppy as his earlier songs), Shabbir Ahmed’s lyrics are a winner. Pritam has composed the music for the song. What is the same, however, are the heavy doses of ‘Salmanisms’ in the song: Khan’s wearing a red pathan suit, and makes all his signature moves. It is Kareena Kapoor who disappoints in the song: It seems like she hasn’t yet got past her Tu Chahiye mode (a romantic song from

the same film). Instead of partying and having fun, Kareena concentrates on measured moves. Bajrangi Bhaijaan, which also stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui in lead roles, is slated to hit theatres this Eid.

Bollywood tips: Mallika Sherawat shares her college experience I had a great time at the Delhi University. I graduated in Philosophy Honours from Miranda House, and the college had a very cultural atmosphere that was high on arts and learning. Studying some of the world’s greatest philosophers like Socrates, Plato, and also Indian philosophy like Hindu philosophy, Jain philosophy, etc made me realise early on that we make our own destiny by the choices we make. I always thought that if these great minds are saying this, then it must be true, and that gave me the courage to follow my path … to be an actress and not succumb to the pressures of the society! The high point of my college life came when my parents gifted me a car to drive to college, and I was thrilled at the thought that I won’t have to travel in the university special (bus)! The low point was when I failed in one of my exams ... I was devastated! But that’s not what I carry with me. Instead, I choose to remember the good things. My most memorable moments were bunking classes and going to watch movies in a theatre nearby.

Ranbir, Vidya and Emraan: The reason why they flopped While the younger lot of Bollywood actors including Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Shraddha Kapoor and Sidharth Malhotra, among others, continue to deliver hits, a few established stars in the industry have failed to impress with their past

few releases this year. Ranbir Kapoor, Vidya Balan, Saif Ali Khan, Emraan Hashmi and Imran Khan have either had a string of flops, or average releases, in the recent past. Since they still carry a certain brand value, filmmakers continue to get them on board for big projects. But industry experts say that it is high time they deliver a hit.

the roles,” says trade expert Komal Nahta. Trade tip: “Ranbir should select roles that suit his image and age,” says Komal. Upcoming films: Movies with filmmakers like Imtiaz Ali, Anurag Basu, Ayan Mukerji and Karan Johar. Vidya Balan

“Today, your success eventually boils down to how successful your films are at the box-office,” says trade analyst Taran Adarsh. Here, industry experts share their views on why these actors have failed to impress, and suggest measures they should take to sustain their market value and fan base. Ranbir Kapoor Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma in a still from Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet. Off the mark: Besharam (2013), Roy (guest appearance) and Bombay Velvet Trade talk: “The scripts of these films did not do justice to Ranbir’s stardom. He was not apt for

Emraan and Vidya in a still from Hamari Adhuri Kahani. Off the mark: Bobby Jasoos (2014), Shaadi Ke

Side Effects (2014), Ghanchakkar (2013) and Hamari Adhuri Kahani Trade talk: “The process of experimenting with different characters did not work in Vidya’s favour. But she should not be solely blamed for these failures,” says Taran. Trade tip: “She is a talented actor. She just needs to opt for powerful roles that can create an impact,” says Taran. Upcoming films: There have been no official announcements yet. Saif Ali Khan Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif on the sets of Phantom. Off the mark: Bullett Raja (2013), Happy Ending (2014) Trade talk: “The films he signed didn’t go well with his image. He is known for his intelligent humour. He has admitted his mistakes (in a report, Saif confessed that Humshakals 2014 was a “mistake”),” says film exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi. Trade tip: “He has a good multiplex audience. So, he should focus on that,” says Rathi. Upcoming films: Phantom directed by Kabir Khan, films by Vishal Bhardwaj and Sujoy Ghosh. Emraan Hashmi Emraan Hashmi as Azhar in the cricketer’s biopic.

Preparing Professionals for the Real World NAC-OSCE Program for IMGs

4 weeks (Friday-Saturday-Sunday), 48 Total Hrs i.e. 12hrs/week

PROGRAM SUMMARY

Be ready to enter Canadian Health care System after passing National Assessment Collaboration-Objective Structural Clinical Examination (NAC-OSCE). Most residency programs in Canada encourage International Medical Graduates (IMGs) to take a clinical examination which is an OSCE. In Canada, the clinical assessment tests (e.g. Qualifying 2, NAC-OSCE and other provincial clinical examinations) are also OSCE and in USA, assessment on Clinical skills is a part of USMLE-2., which is similar to OSCE. OSCEs are structured to assess the techniques of history taking, physical examination, problem solving, data interpretation, investigations, management, communication skills and understanding of professional ethics. Excellent proficiency in every step of the exam is also essential along with sound knowledge. OSCEs are considered complicated exams due to the limited experience of IMGs with Canadian Health Care system. Most IMGs find this exam different from how they used to manage patients in their practice/practical life and taking exams with time constraint is always a challenge. Evergreen College’s NAC-OSCE program will prepare you for the exam using real case scenarios. If you are planning to take any practical clinical exams (Qualifying 2, NAC OSCE, ECOS for extern in Quebec universities, other provincial exams or USMLE step2 CS) in the near future, Evergreen College will be very pleased to offer you such a course. Our program will not only improve your exam-taking skills, but will also enrich your clinical knowledge, practical acumen and as a whole the clinical competence.

 

The Course consists of XX modules covering all probable exam cases. The modules are scheduled according to the convenience of the participating group with ample opportunity to work in small groups and practice with simulated patients.   

COURSE DURATION & SCHEDULE 

Off the mark: Ungli (2014), Ghanchakkar (2013), Raja Natwarlal (2014) and Hamari Adhuri Kahani Trade talk: “They (film-makers) make him do the same kind of roles. Another drawback is that Emraan has limited range as an actor. People expect an actor to do something different every time,” says trade analyst Vinod Mirani. Trade tip: “He should opt for two-hero films for some time,” says Mirani. Upcoming films: A biopic on Mohammad Azharuddin and an international film with Danis Tanovic. Imran Khan Imran Khan and Kangana in Katti Batti. Off the mark: Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola (2013), Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara (OUATIMD; 2013) and Gori Tere Pyaar Mein (2013) Trade talk: “Imran Khan did not suit the role of a don in OUATIMD. His other films were not entertaining,” says Rathi. Trade tip: “Among all the other actors, Imran

needs to be most careful while picking scripts. He is likely to be accepted in urban roles. He should consider films that appeal to the multiplex audience,” says Rathi. Upcoming films: Movies with Nikhil Advani and Tigmanshu Dhulia.

Pan Ams: Canada earns 7-7 tie against Brazil in women’s water polo Goalkeeper Jessica Gaudreault made a brilliant save with 17 seconds left to play as Canada held on for a 7-7 tie with Brazil in women’s water polo on Tuesday in the first event of the Pan American Games. Preliminary round water polo matches are being played before Friday’s opening ceremonies so that the competition will be completed in time for the world aquatic championship starting July 24 in Russia. Brazil’s Helene Badocco scored the tying goal with 2:33 left in the fourth period. Gaudreault preserved the draw with a save on Izabella Maizza Chiappini with 17 seconds left to play. Canada regained possession but couldn’t penetrate the tough Brazilian defence at the other end of the pool. Emma Wright, Christine Robinson, Shae Fournier, Dominique Perrault, Katie Monton, Krystina Alogbo and Monika Eggens scored for No. 8 Canada, which is ranked six positions ahead of Brazil.

“I think the first (game) is always a little bit rough,” said Robinson, who is making her third Pan Am appearance. “This is the first Pan Ams for a lot of girls too so I think they were maybe feeling a little bit jittery and nervous. “Now that we know what it’s going to be like, we can just get back to the game. I think we’ll be better tomorrow.” Canada will play Venezuela on Wednesday. In the other early games, Puerto Rico and Venezuela played to an 11-11 tie and the United States crushed Mexico 25-3.

Raonic out, Pospisil in for Canada’s Davis Cup tie against Belgium

Canada’s Davis Cup captain hopes Vasek Pospisil’s recent return to form will be a shot in the arm for a team heading into the quarter-finals without its top-ranked player. Martin Laurendeau said Tuesday that he expects Pospisil and his teammates to step up their game after world No. 8 Milos Raonic announced he will miss next week’s Davis Cup tie in Belgium with a lingering foot injury. “It’s disappointing as a team not to have Milos in the lineup, but injuries are part of the sport and we have to step up as a team like in any team event,” Laurendeau said on a conference call. “When you’re best player’s not there the other ones have to step up and I believe that the timing couldn’t be better for Vasek to go over there and face the challenges, but still rise up to the occasion.”

Vancouver’s Pospisil is the last remaining Canadian singles player at Wimbledon after highprofile players Raonic and Eugenie Bouchard made early exits. Pospisil has been a warrior at the All England Club, making headlines Monday by spending almost six hours on the court in a pair of matches. He came from two sets down to beat Serbia’s Viktor Troicki in his fourth-round singles match, then partnered with Jack Sock in a tough five-set doubles loss later in the day.

BMX pioneer Scot Breithaupt found dead; cause undetermined

Scot Alexander Breithaupt, who helped turn BMX bike racing from a backyard backwater into an international action sport, has died, authorities said. Breithaupt was among the first to organize bicycle races on dirt motorcycle courses in the early 1970s, becoming first a founder of BMX — or bicycle motocross — then a champion, then one of its first famous faces. “Scot was one of the key figures in making BMX

become what it is today. He would say he was the key figure, because that was the kind of guy he was,” said Craig Barrette, spokesman for USA BMX, which runs the sport’s Hall of Fame, where Breithaupt is enshrined. “He was involved in every aspect of BMX.” The sport, which later took on some of the same high-flying freestyle features as skateboarding, now draws crowds of thousands, fueled by energy-drink company sponsors and featured on ESPN’s X Games. Among its biggest current stars is Jamie Bestwick, a 13-time X Games BMX gold medalist, who was part of a social media outpouring in the action sports world for Breithaupt. “Sad to read about the passing of one of the alltime greats,” Bestwick said on his Twitter and Facebook pages. “Scot Breithaupt thank you for your amazing contributions and dedication to BMX.”

Serena Williams beats Victoria Azarenka to reach Wimbledon semis

Even as Serena Williams piled up aces and groundstroke winners from all angles, even as she stormed through seven games in a row and 10 of the last 13 in yet another comeback, her Wimbledon quarter-final against Victoria Azarenka never felt like a runaway. That’s because Azarenka, a two-time major champion and former No. 1 in her own right, was playing spectacular tennis, too, nearly the equal of Williams in every facet. For when Williams finds her best game, she becomes unbeatable. And for her past 26 Grand Slam matches she is, indeed, unbeaten. Erasing an early deficit at Centre Court, Williams got past Azarenka 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 Tuesday with the help of 17 aces and a remarkable ratio of 46 winners to 12 unforced errors. “It’s been up and down, up and down, but somehow I’m still alive. I don’t know how,” said Williams, who twice was two points from losing to Britain’s Heather Watson in the third round and is now 14-0 in three-setters and 37-1 overall in 2015. “So we’ll see what happens, but I’m just happy to still be here.”

She is closing in on a fourth consecutive major title for a self-styled Serena Slam, which she already accomplished in 2002-03. Pull that off, and Williams also will have the third leg of a calendar-year Grand Slam and go to the U.S. Open with a chance to become the first player since Steffi Graf in 1988 to win all four major trophies in one season. “I haven’t seen her play like this, honestly,” said Azarenka, who has lost 17 of 20 matches against Williams and all 10 meetings at majors, including after leading by a set and a break at the French Open in May.

PGA pulls Grand Slam event from Donald Trump’s L.A. golf course The PGA of America is moving its Grand Slam of Golf from Donald Trump’s course in Los Angeles, the first significant fallout for golf from the Republican presidential candidate’s comments on Mexican immigrants. Trump and the PGA of America met Monday. Both groups said they mutually agreed not to hold the Grand Slam of Golf at Trump National Golf Club in Los Angeles on Oct. 19-21. Trump said because of the backlash over his comments he does not want the PGA of America to deal with any consequences. ”I have great respect for the PGA of America and everything they stand for,” Trump said in a statement. The PGA Grand Slam is a 36-hole exhibition for the four major champions of the year. Jordan Spieth already has qualified by winning the Masters

and U.S. Open. Martin Kaymer will be the alternate as the defending champion. The PGA said it was exploring options on where to move the Grand Slam, along with its annual PGA Junior League Golf Championship that also was to be held at Trump National Los Angeles. The Grand Slam was in Bermuda from 2007 until last year. NBC, Univision and Macy’s are among several businesses that already have cut ties to Trump over his comments. The real estate mogul stood by his remarks, issuing a new statement Monday in which he said the Mexican government is “forcing their most unwanted people into the United States” and claimed that in many cases, those people are “criminals, drug dealers, rapists, etc.”

Pospisil calm before facing Murray in Wimbledon QF

Playing on Centre Court against a former Wimbledon champion and local favourite doesn’t intimidate Vasek Pospisil. He’s been there before and has his own title to show for it. The 56th seed from Vancouver won the men’s doubles title with American Jack Sock last year, so squaring off against 2013 champion Andy Murray in Wednesday’s quarter-final on the biggest stage at the All England Club isn’t daunting. “I had one Centre Court experience, and it was a great one,” he said. “I’m looking forward to going out there again and giving it my best for sure.” Pospisil was concentrating on recovery Tuesday, a day after spending six hours on the court in a fourth-round singles win over Viktor Troicki and a third-round doubles loss with Sock. Both matches went five sets, which has been the Wimbledon pattern for Pospisil. He has finished only one match in less than five sets.

“Obviously I played a lot of tennis, but one day of recovery is a lot,” said Pospisil. “I’ll do a lot of recovery and stuff. Then come out strong on Wednesday.” The third-seeded Murray has been playing well for his home fans. The Scot pulled off a four-set defeat of Croatian serving giant Ivo Karlovic in the fourth round. Pospisil hasn’t beat Murray in three career tries. “It’s going to be a tough one, he’s had a great results here over the years,” said Pospisil. “He’s one of the big four, as they say. “But I’m serving well, I’m playing well. I know I’ll have my hands full and I have to go out there and play to the best of my abilities. And that’s what I plan on doing.” The two have never met on grass before and Murray is not taking him lightly. “He’s had a good run here,” said Murray. “He won the doubles last year and he can play well on the surface.
