don’t tell anyone, members, this really stuck with me and will probably stay deep with me my whole life.

As the project grew and developed the more secrets I began reading from strangers all over the world, from every continent, the more I was reminded of some of the deep confessions and hidden parts of myself that were deep inside me.

In the end maybe the real reason I started the project even though I didn’t know it at the time was because I was keeping secrets from myself and maybe this whole project was just an elaborate way for me to become more accepting and compassionate and whole with myself.”

Are you surprised with how the project has grown?

“I feel very fortunate that everyday I have mail; it’s a privilege that millions of strangers from around the world have trusted me with their deepest confessions. I am surprised by how the project has grown in ways I could have never imagined.”

What started as a simple art project in Maryland USA has evolved, appealing to a global audience.

This November marks the ten year anniversary of PostSecret, as well as the release of the sixth

Postsecret is a community art project started 10 years ago by Frank Warren as a side project to his “boring” day job.

The idea for PostSecret came to Frank in a lucid dream he had while on holiday in France. The project was started for reasons that he is aware of and some that he will never know.

Frank pre-made 3,000 post cards with instructions to anonymously mail in a secret, revealing anything, just as long as it was true and never before shared.

The project quickly caught fire and over the last ten years PostSecret has developed into something much bigger than a simple art project, a very special collection of over one million postcards containing people’s deepest confessions What was your main motivation and reason for the project?

“I was aware of secrets that were kept in my family and secrets that I kept with family 4

, tell everyone to write down the address, to remember how much you have to put in terms of postage on the postcard, to walk it to the mailbox, to take ownership of your secret and words and express it in an artful way.

That process becomes a ritual for people and because of that the secrets that arrive in my mailbox, to my home, are very special confessions that are often very heartfelt.”

Frank gets hundreds of post cards a week delivered to the same address since the project began. “I get every postcard here at my home, I read them all and keep them all. I think it’s a very special collection.”

Frank has built an extra room in his basement, full of bins of secrets, and is currently sorting through a

PostSecret book. Being five years since the last PostSecret book, Frank is promising all sorts of great stuff in this one, packed with unseen postcards and secrets from the original PostSecret app.

Also, there is an awesome PostSecret play: an album of live-recorded secrets scored to music: a website that has reached six hundred million views and has NEVER advertised and has raised over one million dollars for suicide prevention, which is something that Frank is very proud of. “I feel that it’s a higher purpose of the project to give people the courage to tell their stories to find the help they need or inspire others to tell their truth.”

The PostSecret app launched in September 2011 and quickly became the best selling app in the world but within three months it had to be killed because it became an unsafe place for people to share secrets, which is never what Frank wanted it to be.

How can you describe the physical, tangible quality that exists through the project and how was that hindered in the PostSecret application?

“The process in writing and mailing a postcard is not impulsive. It takes effort and time to find a postcard, 5

two make it onto the website. The rest will eventually make their debut in the PostSecret books and the incriminating secrets that are banned from the books are shared at PostSecret events.

Frank’s work with the PostSecret project continues to raise awareness for suicide prevention.

As a keen traveller and excellent motivational speaker, Frank hopes to pursue these passions and provide a unique and inspiring platform for people to share secrets. With increasing popularity of PostSecret worldwide, we should look forward to seeing more of Frank and PostSecret in the future.

What’s your favourite secret?

“I like all kinds of secrets, I don’t know if I have a favourite. But, maybe the one that came with a wedding ring or the one that was written on a Starbucks cup that said “I serve decaf to people who are rude to me.”

Why do you feel it is important for people to want to share secrets with others?

“I think that secrets are the currency of intimacy and by telling our deepest stories we form our deepest bonds with others and experience empathy not just with our community but with who we truly are. I think that by sharing our secrets, we become who we are.

The idea of the power that secrets can have over us, or the power that we can have to transform ourselves through sharing secrets. In many ways including something very simple, like a postcard.”

What is the most common secret?

“On a lighter note I get a lot of “I pee in the shower” but maybe more than that are the secrets coming from people who are searching in different ways for intimacy, for that one person who they don’t have to keep any secrets from. I get hundreds of those stories, all different and those secrets arrive in my mailbox everyday.

MY DIRTY LITTLE SECRET There’s really only one rule when it comes to choosing shower beers. This pearl of watery wisdom was handed down to me by a grizzled lineman in a Squamish campground. He was all-pro in the shower beer game and would squash an entire sixpack during his afternoon suds session.

Whatever you choose to drink it is imperative that the taste of the beer should remain the same no matter how much shower water is inadvertently added to it.

So, don’t let the throat-bearded beer snobs tell you that some beers are better than others. Take it from me, there’s no such thing as a bad beer, just the wrong drinking occasion.

I think it’s fair to claim that everyone has at least one dirty little secret.

Something so awful, which if it were to come to light, would destroy one’s general standing within society.

It’s not an easy thing to admit for a self-proclaimed aficionado of alcohol such as myself, but I love Coors Light. Absolutely love it. Yup, that most tasteless and watery of all the tasteless and watery beers is a classic of its kind. 4.2% of taste bud suppressing blandness. The endorsement by everyone’s favourite streetfighter, JeanClaude Van Damme, only serves to reinforce my position on this beverage... no retreat no surrender.

It’s not an everyday habit you understand (I’m not some sort of pervert) but when you’re in the mood you’ve just got to give in. After a full day cragging or punching out lap after lap in the DH park, as you try and remove the caked on dirt, blood, whatever, you really need a shower companion to help you get properly clean. And mine happens to be Coors Light.

The landscape interests me on many levels as it feeds us both physically and emotionally. Landscapes present a changing vista, daily and seasonally, depending on the light, weather, plants and animals occupying it and how each individual looks at the landscape. My work explores the way we see, feel and remember the landscape.

Allowing an array of moods and perspectives to be represented in a collection of small paintings creates an encompassing image of a landscape’s character.

This town holds many secrets.

The secrets that many of this fair land hold close to their chest. So called ‘skeletons in the closet’ are an everyday occurrence for many Queenstown and Centralites. Family Violence is here in this area and I for one think we need to stop calling it a secret and start talking about it.

Aside from blogging about the lovely side of Queenstown, the walks, the ice-cream, I have another side of my working life that has belonged in the field of Family Violence for over five years. Jigsaw Central Lakes has been chugging away behind the tourism wheel in this town for nearly 20 years and it still shocks people to their core when they ask the age old question “family violence? in this town?”. This town, although different to many parts of Aoteoroa, has and will always have the same issues as many other towns and cities. The fact that where there are people, there are issues, where there are issues, there is anger and upset and where there is anger there is more often than not a series of events that occur that contribute to the name of family violence. It’s not a secret that New Zealand has one of the highest rates of child abuse in the

modern world. The reasons why is another huge question and answer session but the fact of the matter is Queenstown has violence and yes this encompasses sexual, physical, neglect, psychological and verbal and yes, it isn’t going anywhere and yes, we need to talk about it.

25th of November sees White Ribbon Day arrive again at our door. And again we will look at how many men, women and children have died at the hands of something that isn’t easily fixable. It is complex, difficult and heartwrenching for some who experience it day after day. Children who grow up experiencing this as ‘normal’ and others who still and have always turned a blind eye to what is happening. We can all (and I mean all) stand up and say we have been abusive to some extent to make ourselves feel better, whether as a teenager in the playground or during a heated argument with a loved one.

So why do we still say this is not our problem. Stop the secrets, start talking truth.

THE FIRST BATCH

I was going to be a mother.

Shaking, I fought to calm my breathing. This wasn’t supposed to happen yet. In two weeks’ time I was supposed to present myself at the Facility for Internment along with everyone else.

I hadn’t asked for this pregnancy; none of us had. But The Men, the scientists who fed us the Anti-Poison that kept us alive in this dead, godforsaken world, had fed us something else. We’d come to realise their plan to bring new life into this darkness, into this world devastated by radiation and ravaged by despair. They called it Project Eden.

I cried out and grasped at the wall for support. I needed to get down into the bunker.

Rifling through the medical supplies there, I bit my tongue against the pain, sterilising the knife to cut the cord, gathering towels. My huffing breaths broke on screams. I lay on the bed, hands clenched in the sheets and hoped. I hoped this would turn out all right. I hoped I was strong enough. Then came the blood.

I’d been waiting for the knock that sounded on the door. I went into the hallway, hands settled over my stomach. I needed no mirror to tell me I was pale. I could barely walk.

Three of The Men entered purposefully but stopped short at the sight of me. The heavy, black, rubber gas-masks that they always wore regarded me steadily.

“What happened?”

I sucked in a shuddering breath. “I was premature. It came on so quick.

But it was a stillbirth. It - she - was already dead.”

The masks loomed, impassive. What were they thinking?

“What did you do with the remains?”

I swallowed the lump in my throat. “I took care of them. In the wood burner.”

They paused and I held my breath. Then they marched into the kitchen, placed my meds on the table and turned on their heels. With no word of condolence, they left.

I went down into the bunker, where my newborn child was screaming.

But the bunker was solid concrete lined with lead. I could keep her silent 12

down there, keep her hidden, keep her safe. I didn’t know why I’d lied to The Men, only that it was the right thing to do.

Days passed in a tightly-wound routine, startling at every cry. I relaxed only after the darker black of nightfall, long after the med-run, when I knew The Men were all back at the Facility. That’s when I could hold my daughter, the tiny being that had come from me - and feel something other than fear.

I gazed in wonder, familiar now with the claw, the sunken shape of her head, its mixed up features. Her eyes shone. I fed her and held her to me, tiny and harmless and innocent. I crushed Anti-Poison to powder and dabbed it on her tongue with my fingertip. She scrunched up her face in cute complaint. I called her Ellie.

Nearly three weeks after her birth, I left her in the makeshift cot and crept up the stairs, dread knotted inside me and mounting with each step.

I ascended as though a rope were buried inside my gut and someone held the other end, drawing me up.

In the cottage, I turned away from the hatch and went to the window.

I stopped and stood silently, my hand swiping clear a spot in the duststreaked pane of glass. I was supposed to be due today. I was supposed to be in a hospital bed at the Facility. With the others.

My hand rested on the window, pressing against it. I stared at the pillar of smoke twisting its way up to the heavens. I could smell it. I could taste the ash on my tongue. I could hear the screams echoing in my ears.

My fist clenched against the glass. The batch of babies must all be like Ellie, like Ellie or worse. A strangled, alien cry split the air. I spun around before I realised it came from me.

Could I have warned them? No, not without sacrificing my secret.

I clenched my eyes shut a moment, trying to deny what every fibre of me knew to be the truth. Tears squeezed from the corners and tracked down my face.

They were burning the babies.

There’s this urban legend that when The Sex Pistols played their first gig, there were 15 people there, but they all started a band. It was kinda the opposite when new upstart QT band Silkworm played their debut gig last month. There were way more than 15 people in the crowd but it seemed like most of the crowd was in a band.

Such is ‘the scene’ in Queenstown, musicians supporting musicians, artists supporting artists, people supporting people. Helps that this new band is filled with old friends - Pol Nicholson (Guitar), Shay Muddle (Bass) and Martin Guy (Drums), but none the less the local artistic riff-raff was out in unwashed force, The Source included, to catch their first gig.

Straight ahead 90’s pop-punk anthems, Silkworm is a guilty pleasure for all of us who perfected our air guitar and rock moves to Dookie era Green Day (when they still mattered), Sublime (when they were still alive) and a healthy dose of ‘where are they nows’ - Everclear, Jimmy Eat World, Blink-182, with the odd modern-classic-in-the-making thrown in for good measures.

This flavour of fire-brand post grunge packs the musical punch of losing your virginity, it’s full of passion, chaos, lasts two and half minutes and

by the end you aren’t sure what just happened, but you want to do it again.

Jump up and down dancefloor fillers, anthemic angst welded to distorted guitars, snarky vocals, double kick drums and three seasoned players who know how to play.

The secret is out - there’s promise of originals on the way and a host of gigs this summer. For those of a certain age, this era of music has the nostalgic connection of first girlfriends, first beers, first lots of things. It’s the post-grunge era version of classic rock and a long overdue addition to the local music scene. Whether you were there the first time or not, this music is like a well loved flannel shirt - it just feels like home.

Pull on your Chucks, dig out your ‘No Fear’ T-Shirt, chain your wallet to your belt and settle in - Silkworm are here to stay, right where we left them - and right where we want to go.

Cynthia (Brenda Blethyn) is a woman whose life has been a long series of painful disappointments. She’s single with no romantic prospects and a dead-end job. One day Cynthia receives a call from a woman named Hortense (Marianne Jean-Baptiste), who claims to be the daughter she put up for adoption years ago. Cynthia initially reacts with panic but she agrees to meet her and is surprised to discover that she’s a successful eye doctor - and that she’s black. Cynthia is soon convinced that Hortense is who she claims to be and they form a friendship that gives Cynthia a new source of emotional strength. However, when Cynthia decides to introduce the family to her new “friend” it forces them to confront the lies and evasions that have kept them apart all these years.

Why couldn’t it work for drugs? As it stands, the current avoidance messages surrounding drug-use can be regarded as negligent. They neglect to inform or educate their audience but this can change.

We could teach kids and the public a realistic, relatable message: “Don’t take drugs. They’re unregulated, you don’t know what’s in them and they could cause you serious harm. But! If you do try them: always be with people you know and trust, drink moderate amounts of water, don’t have too much at once - no more than one pill at first and tell someone sober what you’re taking, how much and where you’re planning on going.”

Sure, plenty of people will ignore these ideas, just like plenty of people ignore the messaging of safe sex and binge drinking but at least they’ll understand realistic consequences of their actions.

Helping people understand that drugs affect everyone differently and are more addictive for certain personalities is important too.

People need to be educated about safer drug using practices because, let’s face it, they’re not going to stop taking drugs. Illicit drug use is on the rise in Australia, the US and NZ. In fact, The NZ Drug Foundation found one in two New Zealanders has tried an illicit drug in their lifetime.

It’s true then what Dr Adam Winstock, the founder of the largest ever global drug survey says: “The first step is to treat people who take drugs as rational adults who wish to be informed.”

Recent Queenstown visitor Jillionaire agrees. In 2013 he said “It’s going to sound weird but we need to teach kids how to do drugs, the same way we teach them about drinking responsibly and having safe sex.” So plenty of people agree we need to teach the public about drugs but how and what would we say?

So what has worked? The current harm reduction strategies tell kids “DON’T DO DRUGS OR YOU’LL DIE!” This approach just alienates its audience because it’s untrue. Just as Jillionaire said, liken it to safe sex education. Did celibacy messages of the 60’s work? “DON’T EVER HAVE SEX BEFORE MARRIAGE OR YOU’LL GET PREGNANT AND GET AN 24

how to take drugs? does this help? If you’re expecting MDMA and your Marquis test doesn’t turn your pill the colour signifying MDMA, you could have anything from dangerous PMA to rat poison.

If you decide to take the non-MDMA pill anyway, you’re taking a huge risk but it’s a risk you’ve decided to take. Don’t forget though, most kits only test the dominant ingredient; pills and powders can still include random, dangerous side-ingredients that won’t show up unless the drug is tested in a lab.

The public, both young and old, can make decisions for themselves but these decision should always be well informed. If we told kids and the public the truth about drugs, it may lead to safer drug taking practices which the recent Global Drug Survey has found can reduce harm. Bring on the billboards with realistic, helpful messaging that could genuinely help prevent overdoses and accidental deaths.

Throw the internet into the mix and anyone can Google cocaine and see that, in fact, you don’t die from trying it (unless you have far too much, or a toxic batch).

But let’s get specific. Risk reduction guidelines - The Highway Code have been put together by Dr Adam Winstock. Fourteen Guidelines including test dosing a new batch, avoiding when depressed, eating properly when taking the drug and avoiding it for four weeks between sessions are all mentioned in the MDMA guide, just one of the many vices listed. While these suggestions may make non-drug users wince at their detail, they’re logical, realistic and helpful tips that should be readily accessed.

But how can you preach safe drugtaking messages when you don’t know what’s in every pill, powder or bag? The reality is, people will take drugs whether they know what’s in it or not. Over 5000 Kiwis participated in the Global Drugs Survey and 5% said they’ve snorted mystery powders.

There is no 100% reliable home-test for drug ingredients but there are plenty of kits that can tell you the main ingredient of your pill. How 25

THE COLONEL’S SECRET RECIPE The world’s most famous secret recipe would have to be KFC’s Original Recipe of 11 herbs and spices invented by Colonel Sanders in 1940.

The recipe is not patented because patents eventually expire, whereas trade secrets can remain the intellectual property of their holders in perpetuity. A copy of the recipe, signed by Sanders, is held inside a safe inside a vault in KFC’s Louisville headquarters, along with eleven vials containing the herbs and spices. To maintain the secrecy of the recipe, half of it is produced by Griffith Laboratories before it is given to McCormick, who add the second half. Although Sanders obviously never revealed the recipe before his death in 1982, he did admit to the use of salt and pepper and claimed that the ingredients “stand on everybody’s shelf”. So while of course this isn’t the recipe, this one seems to be the most popular knock-off version: 1 egg, beaten 1 cup buttermilk 1.5kg worth of chicken pieces 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon ground oregano 1 teaspoon chili powder 1 teaspoon dried sage 1 teaspoon dried basil 1 teaspoon dried marjoram 1 teaspoon pepper 2 teaspoons salt 2 tablespoons paprika 1 tablespoon onion salt 1 teaspoon garlic powder 2 tablespoons MSG seasoning (yum) 1 can Crisco (lard), enough to cover chicken in a pressure fryer Combine the egg and buttermilk in a large bowl. Soak the chicken pieces in the mixture.

Add the flour to a separate bowl and fold in all the herbs and spices. Roll the chicken in the seasoned flour until completely covered.

Add the lard to a pressure fryer and heat to 180C. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s directions for your pressure fryer.

Use a utensil to carefully lower three pieces of the chicken into the hot oil and quickly lock the lid in place.

Allow to fry for 8 to 10 minutes until the chicken is golden brown and thoroughly cooked.

Once the pieces are cooked, release the pressure according to the manufacturer’s directions and remove the chicken to paper towels or a metal rack to drain.

Repeat with the remaining three pieces of chicken. The real secret to making this is the Crisco in the recipe and using a pressure fryer!

Here is where the problems would start.

It sounds ludicrous but in reading the exploits of the CIA’s covert operation “MK Ultra” you’d think it was made up by some crackpot conspiracy theorists. From dispensing LSD to deputy directors through to trying to get dolphins to speak, it seems it wasn’t just the hippies who were off their gourd.

The dolphin one is, in hindsight, a particular shocker.

Put in a semi-submerged or flooded house, a dolphin was placed with a trainer with a view to teaching them how to speak. Being a young dolphin this was all well and good in the getting-them-to-pay-attention 28

NIGHTHAWKS by Edward Hopper they are from one another. Although Hopper denied that he purposely infused any of his paintings with symbols of isolation and emptiness, he acknowledged of Nighthawks that “unconsciously, probably, I was painting the loneliness of a large city.”

In selecting his vantage point, Hopper eliminated any reference to the diner’s entrance. The viewer, drawn to the light shining from the interior, is shut out from the scene by a seamless wedge of glass, a characteristic of Art Deco design. Fluorescent lights had just come into use in the early 1940s and the eerie glow flooding the dark street corner may be attributed to this innovation. The moody contrast of light against dark and the air of menace inside has been linked to film noir, a movement in American cinema that featured stories of urban crime and moral corruption.

easily one of the most famous paintings in american art history, nighthawks is a powerful and iconic snapshot of american culture during the 1940s.

Although trained as an illustrator, Edward Hopper spent five years studying painting under Robert Henri, a member of the Ashcan School of painters who focused on the gritty realities of the city. Hopper explained that Nighthawks was inspired by “a restaurant on New York’s Greenwich Avenue where two streets meet.” The diner has since been destroyed but the image, with its carefully constructed composition and lack of narrative, has a timeless quality that transcends any particular location. The painting reveals three customers lost in their own private thoughts. The anonymous and uncommunicative night owls seem as remote from the viewer as 29

By: Paul Shipman of Public Bar & Kitchen Speakeasies started cropping up and then cocktail parties were brought home, all far away from the watchful eye of the law. With these secret establishments and drinking dens, out poured this incredible creativity that has continued to push the alchohol industry from strength to strength.

By far one of the best things about Prohibiton was the advent or gained popularity of mixed drinks. They initially came about as a way of masking the more unpleasant notes of homemade spirits but soon became more and more refined.

Here’s one of my favourites -

Let me talk a little about a horrendous time in the world. It happened in 1920 with the passing of the 18th Amendment. It was started by pietistic Protesants. Yup it was Prohibition.

Now for a person who makes a living by talking about and pouring alchohol, I can’t think of anything worse to happen but once you look a little closer, Prohibition was actually the catalyst to many amazing changes in the world of alcohol.

Prohibition was forced upon most Americans by hugely vocal religious groups looking to curb antisocial drunkenness and reform the (in their eyes) blissful country that had not long ago been founded. Now this brought about a few things, some positive, some negative. The negative ones are obvious – unrest, protesting and organised crime in the form of cartels selling illegal and often dangerous homebrewed liquor. But then Americans started travelling to sip on illicit elixirs. Mexico for tequila (and hence the popularisation of margaritas) and Cuba for delicious rum, again bringing classics like the daiquiri and the mojito to American palates.

Prohibition also brought cocktails and the leisurely enjoyment of drinks to an equal stage. Bars and lounges used to be a male dominated society with women being excluded from partaking but this all changed when
