taxingslipperytech TIME TO PAY UP? The phrase ‘Slippery Tech’ is used to describe the habits of an increasing tribe of digital pirates operating on our shores. Every year the annual accounts of the world’s borderless business empires surprise us as we swoon over their massive profits. Facebook, Amazon and Google’s owner Alphabet all report eye-watering numbers and yet the trickle down effect of this wealth is negligible. This fuels the debate on whether big technology companies pay enough tax in countries outside their US bases - something that’s been discussed for several years. The difference is that now politicians in several countries are talking about and implementing changes that could mean such companies pay significantly more in future. (We recently saw a shift in thinking when the EU fined Google $7.5 billion for monopolistic trading practices.) As a result of President Donald Trump’s recent tax changes, some US multinationals are bringing home money earned internationally and held offshore. Earlier this month Apple said it would pay $38bn (£27bn) in repatriation taxes – but while it presented this as part of supporting the American economy, it was presumably tempted by the bargain 15.5 per cent rate it will pay on the $250bn cash-pile in question. One-off moves don’t change the fact that tech giants are likely to continue to make vast amounts of money overseas, on which they

hot stuff

often pay little tax. This has sparked criticism and some countries and companies have already made changes, although generally with underwhelming results. Last year, Facebook said it would book nonUS advertising by major clients in countries where it has offices, rather than through its international HQ in low-tax Ireland. A small step in the right direction or just lip service? Tax is the only way our governments can generate revenue for our countries to develop. Education, health, conservation, law and order... the list is long and shows how expensive it is to run a country. If you allow slippery tech to avoid tax in your country you’re starting down a road to bancruptcy and that’s not somewhere New Zealand can afford to be... 4

The Sacred Eels of Lake Wakatipu

the word

are more females in the lake than males and that they will breed only once in a lifetime then travel all the way to the salty seas around Tonga to produce eggs. A journey that no one has ever fully witnessed or documented. How do they make it to the Pacific Ocean? Follow the Kawarau River tributaries to the west coast? Or maybe they slip over the Remarkable Mountains and on to some other meandering stream? Author James Prosek, who spent time in New Zealand to study the illusive longfin, wrote; “We allow ourselves to believe nature can be explained. In the process, we confine nature to those explanations.” Maybe our sacred beliefs will remain as wondrous as that tale of your mate, who claims to have lured a man-eating eel out of Lake Wakatipu with nothing but a bit of string and a piece of sausage…

Is it merely coincidence that sacred is an anagram of scared? Or do reverence and fear make the best storytellers, turning our local surroundings into something more… supernatural? Ask a tourist in the K-Jet underwater observatory and they’ll tell you the eels that slink past are just creepy fish. But for thousands of years Wakatipu’s waters – so deep that the lake floor drops below sea level – have writhed with the mystery of these creatures. The longfin eel is native to New Zealand and was a traditional food source for Maori in the Otago region. Yet foreign explorers reported disturbing rumours of a sea monster that haunted the Wakatipu and dragged unwary humans from shore. Were the tales connected to the Maori legend of Matau, a terrible taniwha giant whose lying body forms the shape of the lake? Or does the famed monster of Loch Ness have a southern relative? When facts replace estimations, the eels grow even more mystical. Scientists know they can live to be over 90 years old and grow to extreme sizes; the largest recorded longfin was pulled out of Wakatipu in 1886 and stretched 170 cm long. They have pathetic vision but can climb vertical surfaces 40-plus metres high. Statistics suggest there 6

Slippery When Wet

You either love Bon Jovi. Or you hate Bon Jovi. Or you’re a millennial and you plain just don’t KNOW about Bon Jovi. Too much radio play and bleached blonde hair has caused an instant dislike for some music fans. But Bon Jovi somewhat redeems himself with his third studio album ‘Slippery When Wet’. Ha... slippery when wet. The mind turns to filth straight away. What a great name! Allegedly, Bon Jovi wanted to call the album ‘Wanted - Dead or Alive’. It was 1986 and the band was recording in a remote town outside of Vancouver, Canada. They’d found an old shack. They’d done the photo shoot. But the rest of the band weren’t feeling the cowboy vibe. Even guitarist Richie Sambora said “it felt a little put on”. Then, on the ride back to the studio, manager Doc McGhee noticed a sign outside of their favourite strip bar #5 that read; ‘Slippery when WET’. Hilarity! And a new, slippery idea – sans cowboys. The photo shoot was re-organised. Mega babes with big boobs posed outside Bon Jovi’s beach house in Bradley Beach, New Jersey, soaping automobiles and wearing cut out tops that read ‘Slippery when wet’. But the big-breasted album sleeve wasn’t a hit with the label and Bon Jovi had to improvise – fast! Garbage bag. Spray bottle. “Squirt.

Squirt. Squeak.” “THERE! Take the POLAROID!” Snap. Bon Jovi walks out the room. ‘Slippery When Wet’ is still their most successful album. 28 million copies have been sold worldwide and the album houses some of the biggest hits like ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’ and ‘You Give Love a Bad Name’. It remains one of the top 100 best-selling albums in the United States. It’s been described as a “diverse, pop-rock masterpiece”. Don’t think Bon Jovi has headlined a Gibbston Valley show yet but that audience would sip and slip all over them, all day long... Anyway, there you go! The album name meant exactly what you thought. It was the most fantastic name with the most terrible album art. Shame. Disclaimer: No Bon Jovi tracks were listened to when writing this review.

Our regular agony column - if you’ve got something on your mind let us know and we’ll get Frisky on the case... By AUNT FRISKY

Fighting fire with fire...

Dear Aunt Frisky, I keep getting sent filthy Facebook messages late at night from an old school friend. We’ve not seen each other for over 20 years and we have no history but late at night I get these messages then the next morning I get an apology, with him putting it down to drunkenness. How can I put him off me? I just want it to stop.

OWN GAME! He’s clearly up for a bit of fun but I’m not sure he’d be expecting you to fight fire with fire. I’m not suggesting you humour him so much as turn the freak factor to the MAX! If he asks you if you’re horny, mention to him that you’ve just felt a little hot under the collar watching a Midsummer Murders middle-class maelstrom. Who wouldn’t want to get steamy with John Nettles? Or you could go the whole hog and I admit this is a risky strategy - tell him a story about the time you went to town on your ex with a strap-on. Of course, if he’s into that kind of thing you’ll have to block him and hope you never bump into him at New World by the cucumbers... Best of luck my dear!

That’s awful sweetheart, no one should have to go through that. I used to get naughty text messages from the local priest. Absolute depravity they were. Telling me if his bitch wasn’t going to behave he’d take it to Pound Town. Can you imagine?! I only found out later my number was very similar to the lady that ran the local dog obedience school. Which was a relief let me tell you! You’ve got a few weapons at your disposal my love. No, no, no, put the meat cleaver down petal! We don’t want to chop his hands off this isn’t Saudi Arabia, we like our bacon too much! In your suitor’s bid to squire you with his less than romantic endeavours, he’s shown himself to be a right Randy Andy, so I say BEAT HIM AT HIS 10

humour

A kilted Scotsman was walking down a country path after finishing off a large amount of whisky at a the pub. He felt quite sleepy and decided to nap against a tree. As he slept, two female tourists heard his loud snoring. When they found him one said, “I’ve always wondered what a Scotsman wears under his kilt.” She boldly walked over to the sleeper, raised his kilt and saw that he wore nothing at all. Her friend said “Well, the mystery is solved! Let’s thank him for sharing!” She took off her pretty blue hair ribbon and gently tied it around the Scotsman’s endowment. A while later, he was awakened by the call of nature. He raised his kilt and was bewildered at the sight of the neatly tied blue ribbon. He stared for a minute then said, “I don’t know where you’ve been laddie...but it’s nice tae see you won first prize!”

The doctor looked concerned and said “Show me where.” The blonde touched her own arm and screamed “Ouch!” Then she touched her leg and screamed “Ouch!” She touched her nose and cried “Ouch!” She looked at her doctor and said “See? It hurts everywhere!” The doctor laughed and said “Don’t worry, it’s not serious. You’ve just got a broken finger.” ........................................................ You know you might be a redneck when you only take your toothpick out for wedding pictures. ........................................................ “There’s no way you’re going out in that skirt kiddo!” “But mum, I’ve got great legs, why should I hide them?!” “Because it’s so short your nuts are showing out the bottom!” ................................................................. 14

Hobart’s Music & Arts festival

For the uninitiated, across the darkening weeks of June and culminating in the winter solstice, Dark Mofo envelops Hobart in a world class curated festival of art designed to provoke thought and challenge perceptions. Masterminded by creative director Leigh Carmichael and assisted by Hobart’s MONA art gallery owner David Walsh, the festival has extended the gallery’s commitment to challenging art into a city-wide experience that lights Hobart in red, this year assisted by dozens of huge illuminated inverted crosses dotted across the harbour front.

guitars and amps of the late Lou Reed to create hours of hypnotic feedback. The musical acts showcased this year included St Vincent, Autechre, Einstürzende Neubauten, Merzbow, Electric Wizard, Zola Jesus, Alice Glass and dozens more.

On the winter solstice Ryoji Ikeda’s light installation Spectra shot a gigantic beam of light out of MONA into the night sky, a supercharged version of what we saw at our own LUMA festival this year. Highlights of the many art installations across the fest were Invisible House, which showcased the occult artwork of Barry Hale, based on the Enochian angel language of alchemist John Dee and Drones which utilised the 16

Mushers and a team of 16 dogs, of which at least 5 must be at the finish line, cover the distance in 8–15 days or more. The event began in 1973 to test the best sled dog mushers and teams but has evolved into a highly competitive race. In 2017 the fastest time on record was 8 days, 3 hours, 40 minutes and 13 seconds.

Something Else

Vinyl review

The late Anthony Bourdain viewed the BJM’s mastermind Anton Newcombe as possibly the greatest musical creative since Bob Dylan and it stands to Newcombe’s credit that for the majority of his career he has released his prolific body of work outside the framework of the major record labels, an industry he loathes. Newcombe has just released his 18th studio album with Something Else and that shows his endurance as an artist while the quality of the album’s nine tracks of lush, reverb drenched psych rock prove that creatively he is still a force to be reckoned with. If you haven’t tuned into the BJM before this is actually a great place to start and if you dig it, you have the opportunity to dive into one of the most impressive back catalogues around.

Anton and BJM prove that you can work outside the system, own the rights to your music and be…. righteous, brother. Something Else is out now via A Records and Cargo Records UK.

is Lighting a Fire whether you can play in time and get the notes right. Sometimes it feels like that ‘80’s movie trope where someone turns up wearing the wrong t-shirt and people start judging them based on their clothing selection but then they start playing and everyone suddenly doesn’t care what they’re wearing. Except it’s not just a t-shirt, it’s your whole being and you have to work just that much harder to push past those preconceptions. And then there’s the novelty factor. To me, gender shouldn’t be an issue - but it is. And a lot of it is down to learned behaviours, old ways of thinking. I believe the more we see women out there doing their thing, the more normal it will become. It’s about creating an environment that encourages people to work together, irrespective of their biological differences. Do you have any words for other female/non-binary artists trying to get into the industry? Believe in yourself. Do the mahi. Look out for each other – build friendships, build your community, build trust. And practise, practise, practise! What can we expect at your Sherwood gig? A damned good time!

THE MUSIC INDUSTRY’S HAD AN ISSUE WITH GENDER FOR A LONG TIME. THE USC ANNENBERG INCLUSION INITIATIVE FOUND THAT IN 2017, JUST 16.8% OF ARTISTS WERE FEMALE. Julia Deans is on a mission to help balance the numbers; her album release tour We Light Fire will feature a local female or nonbinary support act at every stop. Playing at The Sherwood on 25th August, we called Julia to find out more… Your new album in three words... “Buy. It. Now.” Just kidding (not kidding). Ummm... “songs for humans”. You’ve carefully selected female or non-binary support acts for your show – what’s that process been like? Selecting the acts for each town has been so much harder than I anticipated – there are so many great musicians dotted around the country! What’s it like being a woman in the music industry? For the most part, my experience has been good – at least in the bit where you’re actually in the moment creating and making music. Most musicians don’t care what your gender is, they care 22

By BETHANY G. ROGERS

Five Minutes with

Freestyle Skier Finn Bilous

Hailing from Wanaka, freestyle skier Finn Bilous became New Zealand’s first Winter Youth Olympic Medallist in 2016. He represented NZ at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics and is currently ranked 15th in the world in Slopestyle Skiing. When he’s not competing, he’s skiing at Cardrona. What’s your best memory at Cardrona? I’ve been skiing there since I was just two years old. I’ve got too many good memories from skiing at Cardrona! However, I’d say most of them are from ripping down through the terrain park in springtime with my buddies. What does a typical training session look like? It’s a funny thing with freestyle skiing, you can’t train like you would for a running race, for example. Every time we go out on the slopes we’re putting ourselves at high levels of risk, so the weather often dictates what a training day entails for us. When it’s a nice sunny day, I’ll be working on my jump tricks but then when the conditions aren’t so good I tend to stick to the rails where the risk isn’t so high. How do you keep your cool when competing? I’ve done many contests in all different types of sports whilst growing up and for me, the way I compete has always remained the same. I focus as much as I can on

the process and try to forget about the outcome as I find this a good way to hone in on what I need to do and not get distracted by other things such as the crowd, cameras and other competitors. Do you have a favourite spot at Cardrona? I love riding the Big Bucks Park, which sits right below the Whitestar chairlift. It’s a really fast lap and features in the terrain park never seem to get old. What’s the most common thing you see folk doing incorrectly when they try slopestyle? A classic one on skis is when people try to use their edges whilst sliding a rail. This one never works out and people usually end up with their skis above they’re head. No good, haha. Three tips to become a stereotypical park rat… Never wear a jacket (steeze before freeze), get some baggier ski clothes and wear your goggles underneath your helmet, haha. Instagram: @finnbilous 28
