INTRO:motion Never take your eye off the ball. Things are happening faster than ever and if you’re not in the know, the whole thing will pass you by. This month we’re taking a closer look at the world around us and the stuff which never stands still. Hold on tight people, it’s 2018 (yep, where did that come from?) and this rollercoaster ride into the future is heading for the loop da loop. We’re upside down and sideways, arse about face and inside out. Where does it end? Who knows.

We’ve got a veritable freight train of motion heading your way from the Hyperloop travelling at the speed of sound through to an unexpected detox enema, fast-talking comics from who knows where and space rocks from another galaxy, everything is in motion. A perpetual state of flux where the only thing that’s certain is that everything is changing.

One thing’s for sure, that 2017 thing is done and we’re all about the big one-eight. Source Out.

gone untapped – excess energy from human motion. Lots of devices have been proposed to capture the energy from low frequency human motion but often the materials work best when the movements happen over 100 times per second – missing out on the energy from the majority of human movements. This new device is 1/5000th the thickness of a human hair and able to extract even the subtlest of human movements. “When incorporated into clothing, our device can translate human motion into an electrical signal with high sensitivity that could provide a historical record of our movements. Or clothes that track our motions in three dimensions could be integrated with virtual reality technology. There are many directions that this could go.” Ultimately, devices like this could free us from the slavery of running from outlet to outlet to charge our personal electronics.

Scientists have created an ultrathin energy harvesting device that generates electricity from human motion. The material could be placed in the fabric of clothing to charge your smartphone, fitness tracker and other personal electronics while you go about your daily life. “In the future, I expect that we will all become charging depots for our personal devices by pulling energy directly from our motions and the environment” said researcher Cary Pint from Vanderbilt University in the US. A lot of research has been conducted into the harvesting of so called ambient energy sources, such as energy from vibrations and deformations, temperature variations, or energy from light, radio waves and biochemical reactions. Recently, we have even witnessed the invention of a smart phone that used ambient radio waves to power itself. But one valuable energy source has 4

Five Minutes with a Colon Hydrotherapy Expert

Colon hydrotherapy is the process of shoving a tube up your bum to flush out the crap. Though it’s not the kind of thing you’d pop on Facebook, colon cancer is the second leading cause of death in New Zealand, one of the highest rates in the world. So, is it time you got a back door spa? The Source talked to Tracey Neil from Inside Out Health, Queenstown, to find out more. Tell us about Inside Out Health I started Inside Out Health nearly two years ago. Having been a hypnotherapist and life coach for nine years, I realised that gut health is massive for head health. It’s like the body has two brains, your head and your gut. Both need to function correctly, so I introduced colon hydrotherapy to my practice. When it comes to health, I think it’s important to look at the whole body, emotionally, physically and mentally. How does colon hydrotherapy work? All we’re doing is using pure, UV filtered, warm water to soften up and flush out the faecal matter, toxins and bacteria. Because of our diets and lifestyles (even your skin care can be toxic!), many people are constipated or have gut issues. What does it feel like? The tube is smaller than the width of a pencil, you insert it yourself and it’s very private – it’s not as invasive as some of the other systems out there. You’ll have a

feeling like you’re going to get a bowl motion and the session takes about 40 – 60 minutes. Some people get cramps, especially if they’re constipated, but it can be very therapeutic too. What are the benefits? With our modern lifestyles, we don’t go to the toilet as often as we should – some say the body is designed to do a bowel movement after every meal. Colonics can support the body, it’s like an instant detox, easing a variety gut issues. I believe everyone can benefit from giving the “garbage dump” of the body a clean out. Since I’ve been having colonics, my immune system is the strongest it’s ever been. As Hippocrates said some thousands of years ago, “all disease begins in the gut” - so look after it! Start the year healthy from the inside out. Win a free colon hydrotherapy session at Inside Out Health worth $145. Email info@ thesourceonline.com with ‘Clean Me Out’ in the subject line by 30/1/2018 to be in to win. 6

Oumuamua

Alien invaders from outer space don’t show up every day, so when they do, we sit up and take notice. Our latest alien invader isn’t from ‘ordinary’ outer space either - it’s from another solar system somewhere near Vega in the Lyra constellation. Nicknamed ‘Oumuamua’, it’s the first interstellar invader we’ve ever detected. My favourite part of the story - where Earth astronauts, scientists and traffic cops rapidly retask one of our hypervelocity spaceships to intercept Oumuamua and get a closer look - is unfortunately the part that didn’t happen. Sadly, our space programme doesn’t have anything like that kind of budget or resource - though given the undoubtedly huge stacks of cash that could be made ticketing travellers moving at 314,900 km/h over the limit, it seems fertile ground for a Muskian mashup of Tesla and Space-X, so perhaps next time. But for it to be a solid earner, we’d have to improve our detection network. Oumuamua was only detected on its way back out of our solar system - all those telescopes have been staring at is its tail lights as it recedes back into the void.

As soon as it was spotted on 19th October 2017, a flurry of terrestrial and orbital telescopes slewed away from what they’d been doing to stare at this new arrival, like a battalion of traffic cops dropping their donuts and aiming radar guns at a supercar. Darkly metallic, spaceburned red from millions of years rocketing through interstellar space and roughly the size and shape of Battlestar Galactica, our donut-dropping attention shows a speeding ticket well earned - Oumuamua clocks in at 88 km/s - 315,000 km/h (still, they probably just didn’t see the sign, eh?). This extraordinary speed is how we know Oumuamua is interstellar. When you’re moving that fast, you don’t get captured by the sun’s gravity into a solar orbit; you plunge headlong toward the sun, slingshot around in a tyre-shrieking tight turn, before zorching away again back into space. In December, we started listening for its radio. Funded by a Russian billionaire, SETI’s Breakthrough Listen Initiative started listening for Oumuamuan radio signals and other signs of artificial construction or origin. So far nothing yet, but it’s a fair way away. 8

Our regular agony column - if you’ve got something on your mind let us know and we’ll get Randy on the case... By UNCLE RANDY

Tash Teaser

Dear Uncle Randy, My gf says she’ll leave if I don’t shave my Movember tash off... but I think I look sexier with it. What should I do?

nature bursts through the clean shaven and tame facade. It is the virtuous man who bridles and grooms his own inner beast, who reigns his carnal spirit and shapes it to his liking, all the while wearing it on his face as a daring mark of the potency that lies within. Such men are pillars of community, leaders of nations, livers of legend and myth. Songs are sang and festivals are held in their honour. Some even attain immortality, outlived by their moustache, as their hirsute image becomes synonymous with their actions. For charitable ends or not, there is nothing more sacred than the relationship between a man and his moustache. It is a personal statement of one’s autonomy, integrity and, of course, raw animalistic sex appeal that none can deny. There is no greater aphrodisiac than the lustrous whiskers, the brisk bristles of the top lip of a real man. Grrr. If your girlfriend cannot see this, she is clearly defective and dangerously unbalanced and you must leave her immediately. In the words of the great moustacheer Albert Einstein, ‘stash before gash, brah’.

For millennia — before even the charitable pursuits of Movember — moustaches have adorned the faces of great men; the virile, the gallant and the devilishly sexy. Whereas the common beard is more often than not a means of disguising one’s feckless face in some shameful manner — hiding an ill-defined jaw line, veiling the chinless declivity of mouth into abrupt neck, compensating for the lack of hair elsewhere, or simply redressing a face so bland and characterless that it commands no interest at all — the mighty moustache springs forth from the very depths of character, from the spiritual well pools of masculinity. These shocks of brush, these lustrous lip ticklers, brandished by only the manliest of manly man men, are emblematic of the delicate balance between rugged nature and civilised man. Forever bristling beneath the surface of polite society, man’s animal 12

Plastic Walk of Shame Every day, you reinvent yourself. You’re always in motion. But you decide every day: forward or backward. James Altucher

by Liz Breslin

The walk of shame. You’ve been there. You know how it goes. You’re in the supermarket and you’ve successfully navigated the fresh things, the bad things in packets, the good things in bottles and the last-minute coconut ice trap at eyesight level in the checkout line. And then disaster strikes. raising and awesomenessgenerating workshops to up the joy quotient of choosing to do without plastic at those awkward checkout moments. Their success was such that they’ve been able to make sustainable bags to sit alongside the plastic alternatives in the checkout line. Roomy, so plenty of space for your extra last-minute coconut ice. And branded, so, souvenir value. Plastic Bag Free Wanaka’s secret weapon is Plastic Free Paula, a nerd with the highest fashion credentials and impeccable re-use suggestions. Lining bins with paper. Saying noooo to plastic straws. Paula (a secret pseudonym) makes short vids on YouTube and her FB page, telling you just what you can do to reduce. The point, explains Plastic Bag Free Wanaka founder Anna van Riel, is a bit of flipping fun. We’re always so serious and so shaming about action or lack of it around plastic reduction. Walk tall not shamed. Get amongst it. plasticbagfreewanaka.org.nz facebook.com/plasticfreepaula

You have reusable bags. The ones looking at you from the kitchen bench as you left the house this morning but your head was too full of caffeine and deadlines to hear them calling out to you at the front door. So now you’ve got a trolley full of goodness and a very high chance that someone’s going to see you leaving the premises, not only approximately a million dollars less well off (because, shopping in the Lakes District) but also packing a trolley full of plastic bags. And what’s the option? Purchase more actually-made-from-plasticanyway-reusable-supermarketugly-eyesore-bags to join the rest of the crying baggies on your bench? Luckily for Upper Clutha walk of plastic shamers, Plastic Bag Free Wanaka has a stylish, aspirational and come-on-boardable alternative. They’ve had great community support from the get-go. When they launched their custom made reusable bags in 2016, they aced $6500 of PledgeMe funding in 10 days and have since had bag making and awareness16

humour Lucy replied “Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.” Next up was Johnny. “My uncle Ted fought in the Vietnam war and his plane was shot down over enemy territory. He jumped out before it crashed but could only take a case of beer, a machine gun and a machete. On the way down, he drank the case of beer. Then he landed right in the middle of 100 Vietnamese soldiers. He shot 70 with his machine gun but then he ran out of bullets! So he pulled out his machete and killed 20 more. Then the blade on his machete broke, so he killed the last ten with his bare hands.” The teacher looked a little shocked. After clearing her throat, she asked what possible moral there could be to this story. “Well,” Johnny replied, “Don’t mess with Uncle Ted when he’s been drinking.” ............................................................ Two elderly ladies are sitting on the front porch, doing nothing. One old lady turns to the other and asks, “Do you still get horny?” The other replies “Oh sure I do.” The first old lady asks “What do you do about it?” The second old lady replies “I suck a lifesaver.” After a few moments, the first old lady asks “Who drives you to the beach?” ............................................................

Tired of constant blonde jokes, a blonde dyes her hair brown. She goes for a drive in the country and sees a shepherd herding his sheep across the road. “Hey, shepherd, if I guess how many sheep are here, can I keep one?” she asks. The shepherd agrees. She blurts out “352!” The shepherd is stunned but keeps his word and allows her to pick a sheep. “I’ll take this one” she says proudly. “It’s the cutest!” “Hey lady” says the shepherd. “If I guess your real hair colour, can I have my dog back?” ............................................................ Little Johnny’s teacher asks the class to go home and think of a story to be concluded with the moral of that story. The next day Suzy goes first. “My dad owns a farm and every Sunday we load the chicken eggs on the truck and drive into town to sell them at the market. Well, one day we hit a big bump and all the eggs flew out of the basket and onto the road.” When the teacher asked for the moral of the story, Suzy replied “Don’t keep all your eggs in one basket.” Little Lucy went next. “My dad owns a farm too. Every weekend we take the chicken eggs and put them in the incubator. Last weekend only eight of the 12 eggs hatched.” Again, the teacher asked for the moral of the story. 18

Guy Williams: Finally a festival in Queenstown not sponsored by fast cars or credit cards... Who do you think are the mustsee acts? Angella Dravid is one of my favourites from the New Zealand festival, she recently won the Billy T award. Ronny Chieng is going to blow Queenstown’s mind, he recently went from small shows to filling out theatres and appearing on the Daily Show… but I don’t think TV is his best stuff, it’s his stand-up that’s really amazing. Sam Campbell is a comedian’s comedian. Comedy genius is a term thrown around these days, but Sam is it. He’s my favourite underground comedian and I’m excited to be on the same stage as him. How should one approach a comedy festival? I think everyone needs to buy tickets to at least three shows! Solo shows and line ups are different beasts. If you know who you like, I recommend solo shows because there’s more story, depth and emotion. If you’re not sure, go to the line-up, because you’ll get a taste for each act and if you don’t like one, someone else will be on shortly afterwards. There’s a saying in comedy – the more you give the performer, the more they give to you. If everyone comes along and supports us, we’re all in for a great weekend!

COMEDY CENTRAL’S ANOTHER FRICKEN COMEDY FESTIVAL HITS QUEENSTOWN NEXT MONTH (9TH & 10TH FEBRUARY) WITH A PLETHORA OF TOPNOTCH COMEDIANS… THE KIND WE USUALLY DON’T GET TO SEE AROUND HERE OUTSIDE OF WINTER FESTIVAL. THE SOURCE GAVE COMEDIAN GUY WILLIAMS A CALL TO FIND OUT IF IT’S WORTH A LOOK. Is it true you only became a comedian because your hopes of getting in the NBA were dashed? I probably have a selective memory, but yes, I’m pretty sure my first comedy gig happened the week after I got cut from the basketball team. Tell us about the festival in a nutshell. At the big Auckland festivals, you get a lot of great comedians but you also get a lot of trash. This festival is going to be great. Only the best bits are coming to Queenstown. I feel like festivals in Queenstown are usually sponsored by Audi. I usually perform in front of a car or a giant credit card or something – but this one’s all about the comedy. travel

in Kurow

To most travellers, Kurow is a pass-through. Located on highway 83 between Omarama and Oamaru, it is, at first glance, a one-horse town. Driving at a normal speed, you’d leave town just a moment after entering it. But if you find yourself in that moment, perhaps on the way to the hot pools in Omarama or a steampunk festival in Oamaru, consider a pause. Pull off the highway and take a stroll along the braided channels of the Waitaki river. Hydroelectric dams in the Waitaki Valley provide electricity to hundreds of thousands of South Island homes. Upriver are a series of impressive dams and stunning lakes, as well as some of the region’s finest trout fishing. Next make a stop at the rugby pitch, a humble patch of grass where former All Blacks captain and world-renowned player Richie McCaw cut his teeth as a child.

McCaw isn’t the only notable Kurowian - Charles Saxton, former coach of the All Blacks and a player himself, came from the same humble beginnings, as did mathematician Roy Kerr, whose contributions to his field include the exact solution to the Einstein Field Equation. Kerr’s equations suggested the presence of spinning black holes before the possibility of their existence was widely acknowledged. Having covered Kurow’s

contributions to sports and science, it’s time for the arts. Head towards Duntroon - if you’re up for a pedal, take the Alps 2 Ocean cycle trail, which passes directly through Kurow on its 300-kilometre path from Mount Cook to Oamaru. 25 kilometres outside of Kurow is the Takiroa Rock Art Shelter, where you can see red ochre paintings made several hundred years ago by the Maori inhabitants of the Waitaki

valley. The drawings, which vary in age, colour and complexity, depict animals, spirits and people. It’s a small but fascinating piece of a bygone era, both mysterious and melancholy. After some quiet contemplation, head to the Kurow Pub for a few beers and if you’re lucky, a live band, a game of pool and a long night of dancing. Kurow may be tiny but it’s filled with history, scenery and most importantly, plenty of character.

Familiar Footsteps:

music

After three of his concerts in Auckland sold out in minutes last year, Te Awanga-born Connan Tant Hosford, aka Connan Mockasin is touring New Zealand for the first time in eight years. CONNAN MOCKASIN SUMMER TOUR Wednesday 31st January - The Sherwood with John Carroll Kirby Thursday 1st February - The Sherwood, with John Carroll Kirby

Mockasin currently splits his time between Los Angeles, Paris and New York but is returning to his homeland for a series of shows including two at our very own Sherwood Hotel, Queenstown (Wednesday 31st January and Thursday 1st February). He’ll be accompanied by Los Angeles’ underground session legend John Caroll Kirby. The psychedelic pop musician toured with Radiohead in 2012 and released his critically acclaimed solo album Caramel in 2013. He’s also known for his work with French songwriter and actor Charlotte Gainsbourg (Rest, 2017) and a 2016 collaborative album with Sam Dust (of Land of the Pier), called Soft Hair. Mockasin, (a nickname apparently born out of his love for shoe making) spent much of last year working on new material as well as making appearances alongside James Blake, MGMT and in John Cale’s Velvet Underground tribute band. The music videos and album covers might look a bit creepy but the gig promises relaxed, sweet summer sounds. Tickets are available online via undertheradar.co.nz 34

When you become successful in any type of life, there are people who are not contributing to the motion. Tom Cruise

ONE TO WATCH

Creature Comforts (1989) A stop-motion animated short from Aardman Animations and director Nick Park, the creator of Wallace & Gromit. Creature Comforts has a documentary-like structure, presenting a series of interviews with zoo animals about their lives and homes. All the inhabitants speak with British voices and mannerisms, from a slightly embarrassed turtle to an enthusiastic polar bear cub, expressing different viewpoints about zoo life, with some appreciating the security and care provided, while others bemoan the confined space and unnatural environment.

Green Business is Gaining Momentum Words: Esther Whitehead

YOU HAVE PROBABLY HEARD OF THE TRIPLE BOTTOM LINE FOR BUSINESS, IT’S ABOUT THE 3 ‘P’S; PLANET, PEOPLE AND PROFIT. DOING GOOD FOR PEOPLE AND PLANET IS BECOMING MORE OF A NECESSITY. By conventional measures, the economic performance of a business is determined by the inflow/outflow of monetary value. Under the 3 P model, performance is concerned with a business’s impact (both negative and positive) on the natural environment which may include impacts on waste, emissions, contamination, air and water quality and biodiversity. The social impacts of a business or its activities may include positive and/or negative impacts on health and social wellbeing, quality of the living environment, material wellbeing, culture, family, institutions, politics, social cohesiveness and aesthetics. Whilst economic criteria may be measured in dollars, social and environmental criteria are not as

easily quantifiable and it can take time to see past mistakes! The language of mitigation makes very clear a trade-off approach. This has often been the approach to date but with foresight one can appreciate that the cumulative impacts of development projects may result in ongoing social or environmental degradation. This is where the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) come in. Achieving the SDGs requires a whole crossgovernment effort. Already NGOs and businesses are considering how their work contributes to achievement of the SDGs and are engaging productively with government agencies. If you have a business and you’d like to consider the ‘how’ in creating greater impact on the social and environmental side, then be part of Sustainable Queenstown’s Breakfast of Champions. I’m launching the Sustainable Business Network’s Breakfast of Champions in 38

Queenstown to ignite the fire already in so many of our business leaders. We will discuss successes and challenges and what we want to see happening in Queenstown. My goal is to help co-create the positive collective, a local community of practice for businesses and individuals to talk, gain trust and collaborate

and then we will see where it goes. Exciting times indeed. The Breakfast of Champions will be hosted by Esther Whitehead at Yonder in late January. Find out more on Sustainable Queenstown’s Facebook page. Invites are limited, so sign up early!

Hyperloop

Imagine being blasted down a steel pipe at the speed of sound. Now that’s moving... The Hyperloop Alpha concept was first announced by Elon Musk in 2013, proposing a route running from Los Angeles to the San Francisco Bay Area. The concept is a transport system which would propel passengers along the 350-miles (560 km) at a top speed of 760 mph (1,200 km/h), allowing for a travel time of 35 minutes, which is considerably faster than current rail or air travel times. Preliminary cost estimates for this route came in

at US$6 billion although some analysts had doubts that the system could be constructed on that budget; suggesting that the Hyperloop would be several billion dollars overbudget, taking into consideration construction, development and operation costs. The Hyperloop concept has been explicitly “open-sourced” by Musk and SpaceX, and others have been encouraged to take the ideas and further develop them.
