When

ROBBIE met BOBBY

We are very privileged to have this soul surviving messenger not only gracing our front cover but featuring his interview courtesy of Robbie Vincent and Mike Vitti. Interestingly this has come about in a 360 degree turn from when I met Robbie Vincent at the 2011 Bobby Womack Jazz Cafe concert and managed to secure him a couple of places in the VIP section. In return Robbie gave me a rare and long awaited interview opportunity for the Soul Survivors magazine. The trilogy is now complete with this interview featuring the man Bobby Womack that subliminally made it all happen. First I’ve got to ask you, how is your health? My health is ok and it’s gonna get better as I had prostate cancer, pneumonia and had a cataract removed. I lost 20lb and my balance is slightly off but I’m cool and can’t be more honest than that. Are you not being a slightly naughty boy still working? Yeah very naughty but I felt like I’m hanging with all these people with white coats filling me with morphine and everything and it’s still killing me. But I’ve worked all my life and it’s a passion and one day I decided I gotta stop doing drugs. Everyone thought I wasn't going to make it but I knew I walked myself in and can walk myself out. We touched on this last time we spoke about the drug abuse now I’ve heard that drugs are good for you but I haven’t seen anyone that’s benefited from them. I thought it was good for me cause I wouldn’t talk about certain things unless I was stoned. You get people like 04 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

your best friend who tells you “I never liked you” when they are drunk, it’s just that they cannot tell the truth straight. Lol Your dad was a disciplinarian and all you boys were well brought up, and I know he wasn’t keen on you doing secular music. Has the religious church love and passion way of life stuck with you even in the troubled times? Yes and my mother would say I don’t care how many hit records you have don’t forget to preach about Jehovah. If you get to a point where you’re afraid to call on Jesus you’re in trouble. So when I got to that stage I wanted to sing gospel songs in my performances. I promised myself I would never prostitute myself again with my talent as I’m doing this for Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson and Wilson Pickett. None of them overdosed except for Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix but they were all friends of mine before they were recognised. People ask what was it like to work with Janis Joplin and I’d say like working with everybody else as we were trying to figure out how we gonna eat the next day.

Fitzroy chats to

RICHARD SEARLING about PRESTATYN SOUL WEEKENDER

With The Prestatyn Soul Weekender back on the calendar this year and only a few weeks away, we took the opportunity to grab a quick chat with Richard Searling, one of the faces behind the return of what many people view as one of the highlight events of the year: Q: How is it all going for the relaunch weekender this March? A: Well, Pontins went on sale with the event last June and from day one the response has been incredible really. In the first week over 300 booked in and to date the sales are close to 3,000. Q: Why do you think Prestatyn is so well loved? A: The team there that ran the event from 2002-2011 did a really good job. Although initially predominantly a Northern Soul event, the Modern side of things under the guidance of Fish and the management team had really taken off by 2005 meaning that the weekender had real credibility with soul fans of all ages and all tastes. You only have to look at some of the great acts that appeared there over the first 10 years to understand it's appeal: Ann Nesby, Phil Perry, Adriana Evans, Jesse James, Chuck Jackson, The Spinners to name but a few, total quality. Q: Why did the weekender not take place in 2012 then? A: In early 2011 Pontins sadly went into administration which had a knock on effect at the 10th anniversary in March of that year. The business was purchased by the Britannia group shortly before the weekender took place - however the event was able to go ahead, albeit with some last minute artist and DJ cancellations. Britannia then undertook a root and branch review of the Pontins business and decided to approach things differently in the future, which meant there was not time to organise weekenders in 2012. Q: So what got Prestatyn back on track so successfully this year then? A: The directors of Britannia/Pontins made a decision that they would seek out a team of specialist consultants who could shape the future of the Prestatyn Soul weekender. I, along with several other people, was approached early last year and after some detailed planning the 2013 weekender was relaunched. It's also important to remember that following on from their purchase of Pontins in late 2010, Britannia embarked on a huge refurbishment programme, both in the accommodation and the venues. This took time and no little investment and was another reason why there had to be a period of absence for the event last year. We should not forget also the simply incredible relaunch pricing struc12 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

ture that has been put in place for March 8-10th 2013. With accommodation significantly improved, yet prices started from as little as £29 per person for 3 days and nights of brilliant music it was a great way to say "welcome back Prestatyn". Q: What will people notice that is different this year then? A: Not too much I hope! I 'm a great believer in the addage "if it ain't broke...", and I'm sure that special friendly Prestatyn vibe will be there in abundance once again. The bar was already set high regarding exclusive American acts and the line-up this year bears comparison with any other year .. We have (at long last) Ronnie McNeir with a full live band on the Friday and on the Saturday afternoon we welcome the immensely talented Vince Broomfield (from Audio) and then later at night, jetting in for their first visit to the UK since 1966, iconic Northern Soul foursome The Vibrations who will be performing the Chess rare groove classic "Shake it up" in their set! Q: You have the task of organising the Modern Room, how challenging has that proved to be? Well, as I mentioned earlier, I think it's vital to recognise and then retain the successes from the previous Prestatyn events so the DJ line up in the Lunar Bar sticks very close to what went before. So most of the key DJs who built the Modern Room reputation so successfully previously will be with us again. Names like Mark Randle, Fish, Steve Hobbs, Mick Farrer ... In addition I’ve extended the running times slightly so there is no break in proceedings now. In turn the extra hours have enabled me to bring in many of the Blackpool Hilton Luxury Soul DJs such as Terry Jones, Andy Davies, Bigger, Mike Stephens (and yourself!) and the extra time means that we can feature the full spectrum of today's Modern Soul scene- from the sing-a-long 80s and 90s weekender anthems to the upfront and yet to be released contemporary songs and specialist Soulful Dance and Jazz sets appropriately scheduled. It doesn't end there though, as we also have a separate Modern room running upstairs called "Sanctified Soul" - in there you’ll be able to hear a great mix of connoisseurs "crossover" 70s soul to evoke memories of the legendary and much-missed "Tent" sessions from the Cala Gran weekenders back in the 90s. Q: Are there any plans laid for Prestatyn 2014? A: Indeed there are. Pontins are currently in negotiation with some exciting American artists who I think will be perfect for next year. There will also be the opportunity to book for next year at the forthcoming event in March at very advantageous prices for those who book up early. Thanks for your time, Richard

FLOYD MILLER OF

SLAVE

speaks to Fitzroy

I interviewed a previously illusive Steve Arrington in 2009 which provoked enquiries about a Slave reunion. Mark Adams, the late phenomenal bass player of Slave died March 5th 2012 (Steve Arrington’s earthday). A year later on 3rd March there’s a House Of Slave benefit tribute night to help raise funds for Mark’s headstone. Thanks to the benefit’s promoter Dennis Deemac Johnson who arranged this interview. He is a huge Slave fan whose relationship with the group developed after they signed his Bad Enuff album in 1984 and now the image artwork for the forthcoming event. This interview with original band member Floyd Miller, horn player, percussionist and close friend of Mark Adams was recorded on Wednesday 16 January 2013 a day that happens to mark the 148th anniversary when African American slaves were promised the unfulfilled 40 acres and a mule deal. To add to this conundrum Django Unchained is currently the most talked about film, one about a robust, determined and previously frustrated slave. It just goes to show what significance there is in a name as it was Floyd Miller wearing a slave t-shirt at a band rehearsal, that gave birth to these Ohio players we honour still to this day.

Steve Arrington in 2009 described how much immense talent there was in Dayton Ohio with acts like Platypus, Sun, Lakeside and Slave who practically battled against each other at shows. But there was no infrastructure to support the talent so what was life like as teenagers growing up with so many funk bands, not forgetting the forefathers Ohio Players? Back then we did live concerts around town where we’d compete on stage although it wasn’t negative. We came together as one to entertain the people and show our talents. I’m not sure how to explain this but we could have been in the streets involved with gangs, breaking into houses and causing trouble but all we wanted to do was play music in our basements. We practiced and took pride and time in our music to become the best we could be. All the bands in Dayton felt the same way, there was a huge mutual respect. How did the Young Mystics, which was you Steve Arrington, Tom Lockett and a very 14 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

young Mark Adams merge with the Black Satins (Mark Hicks, Steve Washington and Tim Dozier) all meet? I grew up with these guys from school. When I moved to Dayton from Florida in 1966 Mark Adams was the first person I met and we became very close best friends, in fact he was like my brother. We brought Steve Arrington into the group and when he left for California we just continued working together. Mark Hicks came to our rehearsals to pull us into forming a new group that consisted of me Lockett, Drac, Tim Dozier and Steve Washington initially. We didn't know how it was going to pan out but in our first rehearsals, we knew we could build on something. We later collated the rest of the group Orion Wilhoite, Carter Bradley and Danny Webster. How old were you guys? I was 16 nearly 17 and Mark Adams was 13/14 playing a regular lead guitar then he switched to the bass.

S D R O W with Ginger Tony

“It’s here!” Well, it’s actually been here for a wee while now. It came crashing through the door showing very little respect for any New Year peace & quiet. And for the door too for that matter. Always exciting is the start of the year as I get to fill in my calendar (fluffy kittens, in case you were wondering) with all your important dates. The Village is now into its 3rd year and we’ve some very exciting guests joining us over the coming months including Bob Masters, Stretch Taylor, Abbo & Sponge plus Stevie Cee & Curly CJ. For more information about this 4th Sunday of the month event, check out our website: www.thevillage-club.co.uk Saturday 4th May sees the 3rd Revenge Of The Soulboy gathering and this time we’ll be returning to Winkers Farm, Chalfont St. Peter for 12 hours across 2 rooms of all things Soulful and lovely. All sold out barring one or two places for the folk who can get themselves to the party, is The Ibiza Soul Week (19th to 26th May). I’m extra excited about this as I’ve never been to Ibiza before and I like to broaden my horizons whenever the opportunity arises. Speaking of horizons, quite a way off (like a horizon (if you have to explain the links then they don’t work)) is The Campsoul Music Festival which is being held at Milton Hill, Oxford over the August bank holiday weekend (24th-26th). Feel free to get in touch about these 3 massive events, info and tickets are available from Music Meltdown 01273 413800. Tell them I sent you... (Actually don’t - they might put the price up.lol)

“The serious bit...” Very much a favourite on the “Jump Start” is Jonathan Radford and he’s back with a brand new single released on 20th February on Buried Treasure Records. He is course better known as Diesler and the new track is collaboration with Double Yellow entitled “You’re Not Dead”. This confident and edgy groover is available exclusively from www.buriedtreasure.bandcamp.com both as a strictly limited vinyl 7” (250 copies, so be quick!) and as a download. We’ve had a lively old start to 2013 on the show, with some excellent new tracks from Lucas Arruda (“Sambadi” on Favorite), Second Hand Audio’s hip hop gem “Got It Like That” (on Ghetto Funk) and I must confess to a little bit of catch-up with last year’s “Shake it Out” from DJ Rudd. In my defence this wasn’t released till the back end of twenty-twelve and with it’s very original use of Karizma & DJ Spen’s anthem “4 the Love” and The Supremes “Set Me Free” means it needs your attention! ;-) If you’re into the latin / percussive / dancey thing (I know I am!) then DJ Greg and Hozay’s “Give Me” is absolutely divine. Featuring Lisa Moore on vocals you really should check out the the “347 Latin Vocal” Mix and give praise to the wonderful Quantize label for serving up another dancefloor essential!!! Anyway, till next time! Ciao for now. GT X

Fitzroy talks to

KENNY BOBIEN One of the most recognisable and distinctive falsetto voices of gospel proportions. Kenny Bobien speaks to us about his incredible recording and performing history and his love for the almighty; enough to spread love like Al Hudson universally moonlighting as a practsing pastor in his native New York surroundings of Newark. Many thanks to Barry King for giving us an exclusive ahead of Kenny’s forthcoming projects.....

At what point did you realise that music in general had such an impact on your life? I started singing at the age of three and have always known that’s what I wanted to do. I grew up in the church singing in the choir aged 8 and was raised listening to gospel singers like James Cleveland, Aretha, The Winans, Andre and Sandra Crouch as well as the whole Motown sound like the Temptations etc. I was born in 1967 and started singing professionally at 18 straight out of high school with CC Rogers. Did you start off singing falsetto or were you able to do other octaves but preferred falsetto? I didn't start off falsetto but it was always part of my voice development and it was a choice I made later on. Which falsetto vocalist do you admire? Eddie Kendricks and Sylvester are up there. What was the first record you sang on? The first record I sang background vocals on was Eddie Stockley’s I Will Always Love You then I sang for Keisha Jenkins and started doing stuff with Marshall Jefferson and Ten City. I later sang for Celine Dion, Teddy Pendergrass and anybody who was somebody. You mention Ten City and you sang on their Foundation album. You’ve also covered their song Superficial People, a favourite of mine, and it makes good sense as Byron Stingily is another great falsetto vocalist who deserves recognition. Those guys are very good friends of mine. How do you balance being a practicing pastor and a singer songwriter? Not very easy I must say but over the years I’ve found ways to cope. There was a lot of conflict at first and certain things did suffer in my life but I’ve now become accustomed to it and juggle them around to suit my lifestyle. There has always been a struggle with the cross over from gospel to secular music as testified from many artists I have interviewed. You are in a unique position to your predecessors in that secular music today incorporates so much gospel. It must be a pleasure to be able to practice what you preach? In the beginning I had my battles with the church too, singing gospel and the devils music. I went through all kinds of stuff but what I was able to convey eventually is that it’s in the message and not everyone is going to receive it in the same way. You have to structure the message in a way that others can understand. I can’t sing At The Cross in the club like I do in the church but if you want the people in the club to hear the message then you have to tailor it differently.

Record reviews Issue 44’s review pages mix up a Muller light music selection from Europe including Amsterdam and Sweden. Some old school USA hip hop soul, a conscious concept, a classic reissue, the new Luxury Soul and a Tarrentino film depiction.....There were so many titles excluded due to the lack of space that I'll be including them on a new blog feature on our website for you to view. Enjoy... Da Buzzboy Tatham, Mensah, Lord & Ranks (2000 Black) Four exponents of the established genre of broken beat template come together to perform and produce their 16 tracked 2000 Black album. Amongst a mixture of jazz funk, fusion, boogie, latin, an equalled balance of strong vocals and ad libs this album’s spectrum is quite wide. The first four tracks pave the way with Bembe Segue on an energetic Naive and my personal favourite a well journeyed Celebrate. The rhythms are complex and syncopated like watching a body popper on Badly Pursuaded and Stars Shine For You. Mr Pickles exemplifies how the 80’s boogie moog and synth instrumentation once ruled supremely. Jazz fusion is running rife via a Mizell Brothers simulated Don’t Give Up, T.H.B, an inspirational, interchanging Quantum and an Airto vibed Ooh Monseigneur. If you like your music sophisticated and syncopated like the System classic This Is For You. Mandrill - We Are One (Cherry Red) Arguably one of the most innovative and indigenously funky east coast outfits of the 1970’s was Mandrill. The funky monkeys served up a mean feast of afro funk latin disco, jazz and boogie to be digested by the hungry. With serious synths, percussion, conga’s, zulu chants and jungle rhythms this album delivers a variety of monkey chops like Dan I. Vocally Mandrill are ferocious on Can You Get It and Funky Monkey, banjo twanging on Happy Beat and spine chilling on the underestimated Holiday. Unified in exploring various tempos and cultural rhythms Gilly Hines, Closer To You and Love One Another enhance this superb album’s continuity. With 2 great 7 inch versions of the album’s funk bombs this is an appropriate testament to Sweet Lou aka Lou Wilson the eldest brother and trumpeter who sadly passed early January 2013. Luxury Soul 2013 (Expansion) Flying out like a swarm of Star War’s space ships at the recent 2013 Luxury Soul Weekender was this triple CD compilation containing over 30 vintage and future classics. CD 1 features quite a few artists who’ve recently performed at Blackpool including; Kloud 9 ‘Dime’, Valentine Brothers’ ‘Taste Of Your Love’, Sheree Brown’s ‘Time For The Party’ and Natasha Watts’ ‘Go Slow’. Nice to see on there also is Personal Life scintillating Morning Light and Patti Austin’s funky rock tinged Practice What You’re Preaching. CD 2 increases the tempo with a four floor production from the gifted Lady Alma and proudly features two of my productions, a previously unreleased uptempo remix of She and Junk Funk’s Just Like Me. Worth checking are two sexy jazz bossa cuts from Real and Khari Cabral Simmons, soulfulness from Soul Talk and one of two Noel McKoy vocal tracks Someday We’ll All Be Free. Sounding glorious on CD 3 Bobby Thurston’s Very Last Drop paves the way for an entourage of established artists. Some 80’s love is spread by D Train’s Thank You and Jean Carne’s Closer Than Close whilst Beggar & Co’s 2012 jazz funk cut Rise sounds like Fred Wesley’s Horny Horn’s section. Adrianna Evans always sounds fantastic and graces Suddenly with the album closing with two ballads from the stapled voices of Keni Burke and Howard Hewett. Always something for everyone so nab one for a Valentines pressie:O) Amalia - Makings Of (Tokyo Dawn) This label definitely swerves left of the right in providing alternative future soul and funk. Amalia collaborates with 16 different artists on as many diverse productions. Similar to Sy Smith, Amalia exercises her psychedelic vocals on a vocoder led Just Like Magic then flips into an almost JA Funk themed Get Caught. Echoes of P Funk and a lowdown 70’s sensual funky horn correlation rumble through Hysteria and Cuttify extenuating Amalia’s lazy singing style. Some tracks like Bodysnatcher and Monologue In A Zoo are more electronic and bionic sounding in a Kraftwork like nature. Whilst others like Where Do I Belong have a subtle minimal house production. The overall production is snappy, crisp and retro with a millennium twist and Amalia’s sometimes sexy and sleazy overtones slide roughly like a baseball player stretching for fourth base. Radio jocks be careful as Still In Love With You needs subtle censoring. Recommended!! 22 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

Django Unchained (Film) Quentin Tarrentino adds a warped comical satiric twist to the seriousness of bounty hunting and slavery and their abhorrent connotations. This good, bad and ugly spaghetti western styled flick also depicts a slight hint of the horrific treatment and distain that the earth’s first indigenous children of African descent endured in the slave trade’s peak years. With a handpicked cast starring the moody and magnificent Jamie Foxx there are some worthy potential Oscar nominee performances from Leonardo Di Caprio, Christoph Waltz and especially the frightening Uncle Tom characterization from Samuel Jackson. The term business not personal is underpinned in this movie when you measure how violence is tolerated by those who administer it. There is a love story, a plot plus a revenge conclusion with subliminal twists and something evoking, whether you are black white, Asian or otherwise, to stomach and digest on. It is a film that’s artistically captivating, subjectively emotive and it cross pollinates smidgens of the American 19th century economic, historical and southern demographic facts. All said and done after you’ve watched the film ask yourself this question... “have you been DJANGO’d?” Seravince Here To See (Moovmnt Records) When I receive random music like this I’m reminded of why I do this. This abstract funk jazz and salivated soul tulips from Amsterdam are sign sealed and delivered for you to hear like Stevie. Aided by drummer Richard Spaven, the lucrative vocals of Sharlene Hector and Zhane’s Renee Neufville composer and keyboardist Vince Helbers invites you to a musical aquarium of mind altering severance. Every track is a winner like Kleeer making this a rare listen from end to end album. Sharlene (Sy, High & 94) and Renne (Perfect Stranger, You Love and World Won’t Stop) alternate lead vocals respectively with Esperanzah Denswill spitting rhymes on 94 and Rika. If you like something contemporary that revisits the good groove in its own imitable style I recommend this album. Black Jazz Radio - Snowdog Records Compiled by Gilles Peterson As an independent label Black Jazz had it’s own prestige sound but was primarily designed for uplifting the African American consciousness. Gilles Peterson has selected from it’s vaults 11 tracks including label owner and pianist Gene Russell's own Black Orchid. There’s plenty of spiritualism in Rudolph Johnson's The Highest Pleasure and the rumbling funky bass carrying Henry Franklins Beauty And The Electric Tub groove. Doug Carn’s Higher Ground is as jazzy as it is funky with hints of John Coltrane Love Supreme antidotes intwined. Preceeding Bama Boogie Woogie, Cleveland Eaton’s funky jazz bass cello simulates a Papa Was A Rolling Stone themed All Your Lover, All Day, All Night. IDJ or Brothers In Jazz dancers would have relished letting off to a Head hunter’s fusion esq Second Wave. From my only Black Jazz owned album is Kellee Patterson’s high octave vocal version of Herbie Hancock’s classic Maiden Voyage. Great nostalgic black powered jazz!!

Al Kent presents Disco Love Al Kent unearthed some more gems and re edits them in his own traditional style. Out of the 15 choices the Mighty Gents and the Patrick Adams influenced Hungry were the only ones I knew out of the 15 selected. I cannot say they are all exceptional tracks but they are against the grain of the norm. Worth noting are the Teddy Pendergrass sounding Bo Galigher TSB Inc Oh Baby and Marion Javius is a short but so sweet disco boogie delight Waiting In The Wings. I’m also partial to the hustle jazz soul steppers arrangements of Ronnie Aprils’ Dancers Theme and Frank James’ How Long Is Forever. Rhond Durand Disco Fever with it’s wah wah guitar, disco prominent bass line and vocal echoes is one of the album’s highlights. If you like the lure of the obscure this is a nice pick and mix for you. Groove Stu Artofficial Substance - Artofficial Substance This is a group of young men who love hip hop and soul and fuse them together harmoniously to make live and positive music. Practically every track deserves merit from the first 6 introduced tracks, most notably Make Believe and my personal favourite the ode Back In The Day. Very slickly produced, some of the atmospheric slow ballads like Where I Wanna Be and Places beg to be listened to intently. There’s classy elements of latin and pizzazz jazz within Ain’t Worth A Thing and How U Want This? There’s so much flavour of the old school on here with funkier cuts like Make It Last, Celebration and a house grooved Get It Right. It’s refreshing listening to some tight musicians, great vocals and intelligent songwriting. Look out for these young bloods carrying soulful music forward. John Morales M+M (BBE) One of the nicest, hardest working and renowned remixer Dj’s on the planet John Morales has a new volume three album coming out on BBE in the next few months. Off the 8 track sampler Brown Sugar’s Going Through Changes Now primarily and Moment Of Truth’s Humming for me personally are the sweetest Philly harmonious mixes. Stripped down to a rawness minus the rollocking lead guitar is BT Express’s Peace pipe and with added spaced out vocals and revamped totally away from Tom Moulton’s mix is Ready Teddy P’s Bad Luck. The Jones Girls sound glorious on the elongated mooged You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else and check out this special 11 minute extended mix of Jackie Moore’s OJays covered This Time Baby. Another slightly up-pitched marvel to note is Al Green’s Let’s Stay Together and another extended pleasure is Unlimited Touch’s penultimate I Hear Music In The Streets. Brilliant!! Root & Groove Element - EP Portobello Dave and Nick Philpin follow up on their successful last EP with another winning formular fusing the old school in today’s contemporary climate and making it sound so retro yet up to date. With their unique young vocalist Coko who sings with an older soul, we are treated here to a nice brass jazz soul creation Fly Free that’ll be breezing through your membranes like George Benson. Coko then takes a back seat singing the hook for a ska and rap rhythm Am I Good Enuff delivered in an authoritative old school Rakim manner by Shadowstar Boxer. This definitely has the potential to cross over and chart nationally if the right generals can feel the force. Don’t sleep on this...when it comes Grab It like the Olympic Runners. Stars - Carina Andersson This young Swedish lady graced 4hero’s album almost 12 years ago and rekindles with the outfit’s Marc Mac and another drummer and producer Luke Parkhouse on this Stars EP. The title track has two mixes one titled Organic which Carina vocally caresses a slow but eerily funky groove. Without You is another slow cut that allows Carina to smother the crisp production quite beautifully. Love Inside is a previously unreleased version from 4hero’s seminal Playing With The Changes and sounds incredible. Pitching the tempo up and still remaining funky hear some consuming orchestral strings and precise vocal synergies on Time To Break Free and a moog boogie production on Spiritually Active Understanding. Carina wrote six of the EP’s eight compositions and sings with quite an array of hypnotic octives which totally captivated me so she’s gained at least one more fan and hopefully many more. Pure quality!! Message From The Soldiers - Marc Mac (Omniverse) Marc Mac sonically collages elements of soul funk and jazz grooves with some poignant social commentating dialogue conveying the involvement of black Americans in the Vietnam war and the rippling effects it had from their perspective on the African American community. Within the twenty plus short songs, experience the consciousness like that of profile boxing legend Mohammed Ali sacrificing his wealth and his belief in refusing to fight as highlighted in Feeling Like Clay. Afro Pride Soldier and Boom Dap Bap shows how cultural identity was observed amongst the souljahs at war. Re-evaluate and Different Light depicts the injustice of the war against the Vietnamese whilst Reflection Time and GI Resistance hints at the discontent experienced by those disillusioned at the reason of the war. Produced with old school hip hop loops and temperament in segments like a it’s movie soundtrack this is getting immense thumbs up from reviewers universally. 24 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

Event reviews/letters Bobby Womack HMV Forum Kentish Town It was a personal triumph for Bobby Womack to actually make this gig having been seriously ill in recent times. Oddly, the show was split into two parts, firstly a promo for the latest album and secondly his usual show featuring all the old favourites. Being a huge BW fan of course I purchased the recent album and tried really hard to like it. Vocally he sounded great but to me the album sounded like an incomplete demo with guitars, drums and horns to be added to the mix which somehow never happened. Sadly the album never really wedged into my conscious as anything other than mildly interesting and this live performance of the songs didn’t add up to much either. Bobby entered stage right in red leather outfit and matching cap to enthusiastic applause. He sat on a stool, duly thanked Damon Albarn and Richard Russell for resurrecting his career and proceeded to reproduce a few tracks from the album. Following this we then had another 20 minute break while the stage was re-set for his American band. This time Bobby reappeared in black leather with matching cap. He then proceeded with exactly the same set as his Jazz Café shows last year but somehow without the excitement which those shows generated. Altrina Grayson sounded great as usual and even Bobby’s daughter Gina emerged from backing vocals for a short vocal slot. His legacy is second to none and his albums of the 70s and early 80s are amongst my very favourites but it may be time for this 68 year old soul music legend and hero to bow out gracefully. Chris Tyrrell - Soul Survivor Member Freestylin in Manchester On Sunday 9th December Freestylin promotions held their 3rd anniversary bash at Matt and Phreds bar in the trendy Northern quarter of Manchester. Janet Crowe promoter greeted everybody with a glass of free bubbly, mince pie and xmas cake. Freestylin is 70% jazz and 30% soul with the focus on dance. DJs on the night included Teecee whose sets included the best in bossa, latin and nu jazz. Paul Goldsmith spun some nice modern soul and two step choons. The final set was supplied by Pete Haigh who provided an excellent uptempo soulful house and jazz funk boogie sets. The crowd on the night included crews from Manchester, Telford, Hull, Birmingham, Liverpool and the Gloucester boys who provided the excellent sound system. The dance floor was hot and sweaty all night long because the music was top draw. I take my hat off to the Freestylin promoters for providing an excellent event which along with VYBE compliment an excellent healthy Black music scene in the North West. Raph Parkinson - Soul Survivor Member The Xmas “Hoot” Alldayer 2 at the Dunkenhalgh Hotel The 4 star Dunkenhalgh Hotel and spa in Clayton Le Moors was the luxury venue for a Northern Soul and Modern Soul all dayer. Over 600 packed into the venue covering the Pendle Suite for the classic, rare and underplayed Northern and Motown. The djs during the day were Ginger Roman, Des Jones, Keith Fletcher, Richard Searling, Barry Maleady and guests who kept the faithful shaking their pants to some fine 60s, 70s and 80s sounds. 26 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

Most of my time was spent in the Dunklaw suite where DJs Kev Oxberry and Paul Goldsmith provided the best in Modern Soul and cross over tracks. Soulful House bangers were supplied by Paul Garland and David Humes. The jazz dancers were kept happy by Tony Clooney and Pete Haigh who spun classic Jazz funk, Bosa and Latin choons. Excellent chicken curry and chilly con carni was available for the punters at a reasonable price and the bar prices were quite good for a hotel as well. Big respect to Richard Searling, for putting on this Blackpool weekender warm up event. An after party in room 714 will be continued in Blackpool! Raph Parkinson - North West Soul Survivor

Soul Train – Ashton Court, Bristol December 29th 2012 Saturday 29th December 2012, a key date for UK Soul Music, the 20th Anniversary to the day of the now legendary and multiaward winning Soul Train event in Bristol. This was the second Soul Train that I had been invited to play at. The first was at Motion last August with Loose Ends, while this one was at the fantastic Ashton Court, a beautiful estate surrounded by the Somerset countryside, the perfect venue for a sophisticated evening of quality music. If it sounds familiar, it probably should as it is also the the home of the famous Soul Network Mansion parties, and now, I am pleased to say, the new home for the the forthcoming Soul Train events for 2013. There is something very special going on in the South West and it always pleases me to see successes happening outside of London. The pedigree of the event is spectacular too. Soul Train has hosted and promoted: Jazzie B, Alexander O’Neal, Average White Band and Fatback (twice!). They have even played Glastonbury. Covering all aspects of music that comfortably fit beneath the ‘Soul Music’ umbrella Soul Train had ten DJs and a pa from Royazza Hopkins. There is little doubt that Soul Train has become a firm fixture in the calendar for residents of the South West and now the event is growing beyond that. Entering its 21st year, Soul Train has undergone a gentle facelift too with a new website www.soultrainuk.com, a new logo and additions (myself included) to the already fantastic DJ line-up. When considering your plans for each of the forthcoming Bank Holiday Sundays this year, factor in a visit to Soul Train. You will not be disappointed. See you on the dancefloor! Mike Vitti January 2013

Shalamar at the Indigo2 - 21 December 2012 Managing to virtually sell out again for their second consecutive year at the Indigo2, Shalamar could not have chosen a more appropriate time to perform as all the audience where in a festive mood and more than ready to get the party started. The tremendous trio comprising of original members Howard Hewitt and Jeffrey Daniiels then replacing Jody Watley, Carolyn Griffey daughter of Dick Griffey founder of Solar Records and booking agent for the legendary Soul Train TV Show, were on fine form. With a tight band and great backing vocals you knew it was going to be 'A Night to Remember.' With a vast back catalogue at their disposal, we were treated to all their great hits including 'Take that to the Bank', 'Friends', 'Make that Move' 'I can make you feel good' to name but a few and we were also treated to some ballards 'This Is For The Lover In You' and 'Somewhere There's Love'. We were also treated to Jeffrey singing the Robin Thicke hit 'Lost Without You' showing he has a great voice and should not just be remembered for his brilliant dance moves. Carolyn also wore a very fetching Christmas outfit while singing the Mariah Carey Christmas classic 'All I want for Christmas is you.' I'm sure Shalamar will return for another sell out show next year as they have so many 'Friends' here and can always 'make you feel good.' June Furlong Soul Survivors December 2012/January 2013 was a busy two months with me multitasking Djing and attending various events. Starting with December on the 1st was Ray Pereira’s United Soul hosted on two floors at Old Salt Quays in Rotherhithe which was well attended with a great vibe. The 9th December was The Xmas Soul Boat cruise on the Thames Soul Boat and a successful debut venture for Jazzfunksoul’s Neville who invited myself and Tony Rodriguez to spin some eclectic sounds as we rocked the boat like Hues Corporation. Great turn out and plenty musical and edible soul food was stomached next one will be on 7th April 2013. Next up was the 2nd installment of Musicology in Clapham with a nice mixture of faces dancing to some more illusive cuts of the jazz funk boogie soulful house and broken beat persuasion with Dezzi D, Colin Scott, Tony Rodriguez and myself - next one in March 2013. Celebrating their 3rd anniversary at Hidden We Love Soul did not disappoint with three packed rooms of diverse music under one roof and a PA from The Chimes’ Soul Network NYE Pauline Henry. Great atmosphere and end to another successful year - next one 16th Feb with Mr Greg “Soul Spectrum” Edwards and an earthday set from moi! New Years Eve at Soul Network is always a spectacle and this year was at The Alchemist with Vivy, Tony Rodriguez, Mark Williams, Darrell and myself played a balanced mixture of soulful and classic house, R&B, soul, rare groove and reggae with party poppers and champagne going off and consumed in abundance - next one is on 20 March 2013 get ya tickets early! One of the friendliest and anticipated weekenders is always the

extended festive one at the Luxury Soul Weekender in Blackpool Jan 46th 2013. Atlantic Starr with Sharon Bryant were well received as was Natasha Watts during the Saturday afternoon jazz session. Nice happy Funkadelic gathering and great sets from the dj’s in particular Andy Davies Friday night in the Lounge. Very inspirational indeed and gonna say a big thanks to all who had kind words to express about my 3 sets. I look forward to 2014 already. Lastly but not least great atmosphere at Funky Sensation at Ronnie Scotts Sat 19th Jan. Wow is was packed from 8pm according to DJ June Furlong who kept the audience busy till I took over at 12 midnight till 3am. The night under a new promotion team will continue at Ronnie Scotts so watch this space. This is Fitzroy aka John Craven with the end of the news round up for Dec 2012-Jan 2013. Fitzroy with Atlantic Starr

Ok so Fitz has stolen my idea of doing one big review....bloody cheek! There’s no point in me repeating reveiws so I won’t. You may remember that everyone was ill in December.....everyone except me luckily. There were a few events that I missed out on and couldnt review because my poor friends were ill! Still, I did get to Banks in Maidstone who had their second soul night for the oldies of Kent (their normal clientelle is a lot younger and more beautiful....and that’s the men!). Anyway, DJs on the night were Greg Edwards, Jeff Young and Paul Clark who all played fab sets and kept everyone on the dance floor. I don’t think it was quite as busy as the previous event because of being Christmas and so much on but it certainly proved that there is a Kent Soul crowd and we need to be catered for. Well done to Banks for looking after us. The Luxury Soul Weekend Luxury Soul Weekend was fabulous as always with top venue, music, concert and people; pure luxury. I am now looking forward to the new Hayling Island weekend in July which promises to be equally fabulous. See you there! Now talking of Kent events, I went to the Kent Soul Sessions at the Clarendon Hotel in Gravesend last night and whilst I am proof reading today I thought I would squeeze a few words in about it. It was Tony Matthew’s birthday which may have added to the crowd but it was jam packed by 9.30pm when we got there. The bar staff found it hard work to keep up with the crowd and it was as hot as you would expect it to be with so many people but it was a great night. The hotel has been recently refurbished nicely and there were two bars and two rooms of music. I believe the next one will be March and worth checking out so keep your ears open for more info. Anna There are some great events coming up this year and we can’t get to everything so if you have a great night then we would really love to hear about it. You don’t have to write pages and if you can send a photo aswell then we will be delighted.

We would love to hear your reviews of the events you have been to. Please do forward your review (max 250 words) and photos by the cut off date and we will publish. anna@thesoulsurvivors.co.uk
