Fitzroy talks to.....

PHIL THOMAS OF CROWN HEIGHTS AFFAIR

The last time CHA performed in the UK in 1998 I had the pleasure of being their DJ so it was great to speak with lead vocalist Phil Thomas who graced Galaxy Of Love, You Gave Me Love and many more CHA classics. He shares the group’s journey as performers and as a consortium controlling their business interests away from the scrupulous hands within the music industry. Come with me and you will see the reality of the CHA galaxy... Who or what outfits inspired you before you got into music? I listened to people like The Flamingo's, The Platters, The Dells and Sam Cooke as my male influences. Due to my father being a minister I listened to gospel acts like The Dixey Humming Birds and female vocalists included Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn. I listened to a wide variety of music like jazz, R&B, blues and classical music which I’m trained in and almost joined an opera company. Were you part of The Neu Day Express line up? No I wasn’t. Donnie Linton who was the bass player for Neu Day Express at first was replaced by Lorenzo “Muki” Wilson. Donnie then met me at Howard University as a freshman and thought I’d be good for his band who needed a lead vocalist so I got into Crown Heights Affair early on. 04 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

Was this when Crown Heights Affair’s first album was on RCA? I didn’t sing leads on that but I participated on some background vocals as the producers called me in to do sessions. Kool & The Gang and The KG’s were already on Delite Records and waving the flag for the East Coast street funk with brass sound bands. What was it that sealed the deal for you to join the label? I think we had a different Euro friendly sound. If you remember Kool & The Gang’s first album was more geared towards jazz and R&B and the label was used to bands doing that kind of music. Our sound was less funky and more fusion. We actually crossed over from various styles and wanted to make music to please the audience and our own ears. We didn’t set out to do that but we were being described like that.

On the Foxy Lady album there is an equal amount of lush disco with Dreaming A Dream on the vocal and instrumental and funk influences on I Am Me and Foxy Lady. We heard the familiar template that the CHA horns with Bert and Raymond Reid, William Anderson's lead guitar licks and Howie Young's keyboard skills would provide over the next couple of albums. This gave you a different edge to the other street funk bands like Fatback, BT Express and Brass Construction as you flourished where disco was becoming dominant. How exciting was the switch to Delite from RCA? You have hit it on the head as all the bands you mentioned were from the same area and we had band competitions going back a long time. Kool & The Gang were our heroes and although they were not much older than us, excuse the pun, but we were delighted to be on Delite as it was an incredible dream. When you’re very young you do not understand the intricacy of the business, which changed later, but we always felt we were in the place where our heroes were and that has never changed. My favourite album, without question, is Do It Your Way because it defined your versatility with disco, jazz funk and boogie. (That was probably our biggest seller in the States and close to the biggest around the world). Every track has its own merit on side one, especially Dancin, which is an extension of Dreaming A Dream. But side two is the killer side with the expressive Music Is The World, Sexy Ways and a cheeky Do It The French Way. The ultimate is Far Out for us in the UK as it was on another level with the intricate chord changes and one that dancers over here relished showing off to. What happened when the song was brought to the group by the Reid brothers and what inspired it? We jammed in our own studio in Manhattan and the horns came via Ajax and Tyrone, the trumpeters who were heavily influenced by some of the best jazz musicians. Our studio was downstairs to drummer Steve Gadd of the band Stuff. We spent time with Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke in his studio and soaked in all of that ambience. We started with the drum and the bass which was Muki and Raymond Rock the drummer, who is actually Chris Rock the comedian’s uncle. Chris was one of those bad little kids who we used to chase out of the studio lol. I think Bert was going through some things at that point and knowing my dad was a minister he suggested we take some life experiences and put it into our music. We used to go to the big clubs in Manhattan and before the virtual world took affect you could really assume you were already in a virtual world. Places like Studio 54, Paradise Garage, Melons, Starship and 2001 Space Odyssey were featured in movies and newspapers but they were real places to us. You could lose yourself inside them places and you could let your mind go far out. Bert and Ray loved to

dance and were always at the clubs so this is where we’d get it from. Sometimes after going to a club we’d let all that we experienced influence us to do what we had to do. Technically the musicians in the band were top shelf. Dream World comes out on Mercury and provides one of the defining space disco classics of all time Galaxy Of Love. This came out at the height of the space disco themed songs that many jumped on around the time of the Star Wars phenomenon. I spoke to someone today who said he remembers a Dj opening the sealed import copy in front of the crowd at an all dayer in Purley, playing it and the place went ballistic. How big was that moment for the group when that charted? I wrote the lyrics for that but I was heavily influenced by the Star Wars phenomenon as well as my fellow writing partners. When Bert wrote “Open up your mind people when you do what you do” (Far Out) it influenced me to expand on “Release your mind as we can fly so much further as we explore our souls” (Galaxy Of Love). We were now able to focus on the band’s personality and everything was more of a Crown Heights Affair signature with the horns sparkling. Even though we loved Kool & The Gang we made our horns more dynamic and I arranged the vocals to sublimate my vocals with backgrounds from the whole band so we were a total entity. Between Ajax, Ray and Bert Reid they took care of the horns, me the vocals and the rhythm section was from the others. Thinking about it, Galaxy Of Love was like an extension of Dreaming A Dream and Dancing but as a fuller song. Yeah it was the growth of progression as a band and with me doing the vocals you could tell it was written by a singer but it was a group vocal lead. I did it first in the studio and then played it to the band and they mirrored my idea. We trusted ourselves and assumed that people would like it although the commercial success was not part of our calculus. I love Say A Prayer For Two off that album and also a single, and the underestimated Things Are Gonna Get Better. The next album I want to speak about is Sure Shot which gave you another massive UK hit You Gave Me Love and even though it became really commercial I personally loved it. Not as brass constructed as previous CHA tracks but it had a great disco boogie vibe to it, did this help define the band further? We were with Mercury at that point but Delite distributed it. It was the first album where we changed management and producers. Our contract with Delite was up and we did a one album deal at a time and took care of things ourselves as we felt we were not being looked after properly.

FONDA RAE

This east coast singing starlet sang on quite a few soul and boogie classics during the 1970’s and 80’s but not always been given her deserved dues. As well as being a vocalist she is also artistic in other ways and has brought a unique flavour and approach to her music working with certain pioneers of disco soul and boogie music. With some great stories, read Fonda’s soul sursurviving story ahead of her pending performance in June 2013 for the Street Sounds extravaganza. 14 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

I’ve read that your first intended career path was painting and design but you were a natural born thriller when it came to singing, who were you listening to growing up and what was inspiring you? The Temptations, Rare Earth, Def Leppard, James Brown, Ohio Players and some rock roots like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. I can also be influenced by a bird or crickets! I read that your first recorded song was ‘This Bird's Gonna Fly’ by Foreign Funk. I’ve never heard it so what kind of track was it? Ha ha ha Ohh I’m curious as to where you dug that out from? I discovered it when doing my research on the internet. That was from my first group when I moved to Canada. Me and Bobby Weinberg, a fan tastic all round musician, ended up writing that song at a Jewish temple and then recorded it. It never came out but we went on tour during which we had a car accident going over a cliff and luckily with the grace of god we survived. The group broke up after that as we didn't have any money. I was the only one out of the group who con tinued on the musical path and this was around 1976-1977. Coming from the New York area how vibrant was the club and nightlife, as speaking with Phil Thomas of Crown Heights Affair, he said it was something to behold? Being honest with you I enjoyed my teenage years of the 70’s more than the 80’s as it became more about house music which was never really my cup of tea. I was disappointdisappointed that funk and rock was taken over by house music which was more technical. I prefer the rawness of musicians and when hip hop came in I was happy because the funk was back. I had hit records in the 80’s but I loved my funk in the 70’s. You become associated with the ZE label working first as lead vocals with Don Armando’s Second Avenue Band Deputy Of Love in 1979. How did you land that job? I was living with a room mate in the Bronx and I’ll never forget that experience as it was the first time I’d come across mice run ning up and down the curbs and I was petri fied. My friend was Freddie Harris, a great guitarist and a friend of August Darnell. He told me to audition and I sang ‘The Way They Were’ and I got the gig. I ended up singing background with Christine Wiltshire and Jocelyn Brown on a track. I must have passed the test because I ended up singing Deputy Of Love which put me in a bracket that I didn't want to be in even though it was a classic. You are reputed to be the first coconut from Kid Creole And The Coconuts and are pictured on Kid Creole’s album pro viding lead vocals for Maladie D’Mour which I used to play years back. How was it working with Kid Creole?

“Whizzy, whizzy, whizzy!” It’s terrible – I’ve such a busy head, filled with gigs and tunes and I need to get them onto this page in some kind of a coherent fashion. Wish me luck... The Soulnaturals new single “If Its War (You’re Looking For)” is a dynamite piece of British Soul Music (Ooh, get me liking Soul music.lol) that takes you back to that glorious period in the early ‘90s when Acid Jazz ruled the airwaves. Hailing from Tooting, writer/producer Tony Cannam has followed the glorious “Rise Brother Rise” with such a classy track that it only makes the forthcoming album “The Sunshine Decision” more of a genuinely exciting prospect. The new single is out now on British Soul Standard (don’t you dare miss it!) and the album is on its way along with an arts project – for more info: www.britishsoulstandard.com Another gold star for the UK scene goes to Lifford Shillingford who’s back with an absolutely beautiful single entitled “Sinking Swimming”. Taken from the forthcoming “Blue Dye – Soul Sessions” album, this song deals with Lifford’s long-term battle with depression and he hopes it will reach out to those who share this illness. Of course there’s an Official video on Youtube so, go check out this wonderful track. From slightly further afield (Brussels) and on more of a dance-tip, we’ve been smitten with UC Beatz new floor-filler “Your Love Is Diamond” (Underluxe Records). It’s slightly trance, slightly euro feel has certainly got “Jump Start” listener’s attention on a Saturday

morning, either that or I’ve nagged everyone into submission! If you’ve caught the show recently, you’ll have definitely heard me banging on about Sonic Funk Foundry’s “African Life” on Spring Strut Records. This composer/remixer/DJ from Vienna has set the bar already for my fave track of the year with a gloriously simple but infectious groove that’s not only been dominating my sets and shows but at home too – no mean feat, I tells ya! X Before I get off the subject of tunes, I really should mention how good the new album from Random Soul is. Extremely well put together and covering as many sides of the Soul/Dance genre as you’d like, it’s a great way to welcome the warmer months! “So many activities...” With the aforementioned warmer months on their way (Oops, I’ve said it now.lol) there’s plenty of dates to go in our diaries including: Sunday 28 April – The Village @ East Village Saturday 4 May – Revenge Of The Soulboy 3 19-26 May – Ibiza Soul Week @ Ibiza Saturday 1 June – Soul Carnival @ Basildon Saturday 29 June – Summer Soulstice 7 24-26 August – Campsoul Music Festival 25-27 October – Bournemouth Soul Weekend Phew, best I get to work on my stamina and wardrobe for the rest of 2013 – looks like it’s gonna be a fun one. ;-) Ciao for now! BLUEY For 35 years Bluey, aka Jean Paul Manuick, has truly been the Incognito man behind the mask. As a musician, singer, songwriter, arranger and producer he has worked with a huge entourage of old and new school musical maestro’s behind the scenes but comes to the forefront with his debut..yes debut solo album. Here Bluey gives an insight to the album’s inspiration... How different was it recording this album, taking centre stage compared to the countless others you have since 1978 with Light Of The World’s debut album on Ensign from the background? Well it is the biggest leap of faith to put myself in the forefront. It’s something that many singers have suggested I do before. I’d be singing with artists of Jocelyn Brown’s stature and they’d comment on my voice but I’d treat it as them just being kind. I began to realise that there was a body of work I’d written, sung by fantastic vocalists of varying ranges but they didn’t capture the essence of what I’d written. As well as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Chaka Khan I have another world of listening to Boz Scaggz, Ned Doheny, The Doobie Brothers, Hall and Oats and The Beach Boys who have different vocal sensibility. Whenever I wrote certain songs I shelved them although people said I should put them out. I felt confident to do something that represents me as a songwriter and an arranger and I gave myself four weeks, and no more than four other people to work 20 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

with. I worked with each person individually and then the rest of the album with my friend Richard Ball. It was recorded in a small room no bigger than most people’s bathrooms. It was very spontaneous waking up in the morning and recording a track within a day and I finished it in 27 days, 3 days less than I’d given myself. What musicians did you assemble to play on the album? I chose three keyboard players who had worked with Incognito in the past, Ski Oakenfold, Matt Cooper and Simon Gray, with each one adding different colours. I wanted to do things that showed my passion like the songs with Richard Ball that sound more 80’s is where I found my own comfort as a songwriter and a voice as a singer. If you listen to my voice singing on the first Light Of The World album on Mirror Of My Soul it’s very weak. I worked with Ski for my love of deep house and Matt for the pop sensibility he brought to Live Like A Millionaire. On Why Did I Let You Go I worked with Simon Gray who had a broken beat backing track and I liked those elements in the record. How did you find switching from your soft delivered vocal to a falsetto? I can’t really hit high ranges but I’ve always had the falsetto and often throw it in on Incognito records like Nights Over Egypt. I’ve never been confident to use it until this record and my friends are the kind of people that will tell me if I got a bogey at the end of my nose so the fact they didn't say anything tells me I nailed the vocal pitch. How did you find writing this album which is quite poetic on the mellower grooves and on occasion self examining on the uptempo housey tracks like Ain’t Nobody’s Business and Why Did I Let You Go? Yeah you read that right? lol. I have made mistakes in my life, realised it and accept some responsibility for relationship break ups but there was a time in my life where I could only see my side. It was easy to make the record in addressing those aspects of my life by writing about it. So I’d go in on a day and just write without any interruptions apart from eating and going to the toilet. I can write a song in an hour when I got time to think and I allowed myself the time of 3-4 hours a day to achieve that. Leap Of Faith is about the inspiration of people whose life stories I’ve read like Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela. I couldn't do things like that as Incognito but as a solo album you speak about the things you feel like Ain’t Nobody’s Business which shows my humility and strengths within my statement as a 56 year old making my first album. Aint Nobody’s Business reminds me of Bobby Browns My Prerogative? Ha Ha I never really thought of it like that but I guess that’s what it is and you’ve made me see my own creation in a different light. With me being a bit of an earlobe trainspotter let’s talk about a few of the songs which to me have some familiar classic signature overtones? Stronger with singing lyrics and a Leap Of Faith reminds me of early Urban Species a very relaxed spoken word style on a lowdown backbeat. That would have been too late as an influence as it was more Robbie Robertson when he left the band and Jack Carrawack when he read his poetry that is where I drew from. Mintos from Urban Species was more of a conscious spoken work artist as opposed to being a rapper so I can see where you make that reference. Got To Let My Feelings Show sounds like a classic early 80’s soul Malvasi/Peter Jacques Hi Fashion Feeling Lucky Lately production.

Fitzroy speaks to

MARTHA HIGH

For over 45 years Martha has been languishing her soul sister octaves, at least 30 of them with Mr Dynamite James Brown. Now working with Speedometer on a joint album, Martha is performing at Under The Bridge in April and shares her history working within the JB camp and her limited solo album experiences. Still full of energy and appreciation for her long lasting career, Martha speaks humbly about her highs and lows as a soul survivor!! Hi Martha may I ask how you are feeling as we were scheduled to speak last week and I was advised that you were taken ill and in hospital? I’m doing ok thank you, it was totally unexpected. I thought it was just fatigue as I had just returned from a tour with Maceo from Japan and Australia. I was feeling sluggish whilst touring and I hadn’t been exercising like I usually do. I live in the country and decided to go for a walk during which I struggled for breath and had stopped six times. I called my doctor when I got home who after examining me said I had to go to ER immediately as my heart rate was very low. The next day I had surgery and now have a pacemaker. I’m just grateful that I have angels looking out for me which gave me time to go to the doctor. I can see and feel the difference and am glad I paid attention to my body as I could have not been here today. Thanks for asking and how are you? I’m good thanks and thanks to the creator for you still being here. I’m looking forward to speaking with someone who shared space and breathed the same air as James Brown as he impacted on my life so much. So lets speak about how you were a member of The Four Jewels who toured with James Brown in 1960’s. After the group disbanded you chose to stay with James which lasted for over 30 years. How was that initial meeting with soul brother number one? It was 1966 when we joined him. We were performing at the Howard University in Washington DC and it was such a ruckus when he came in. In fact I thought the audience were over22 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

whelmed and reacting to our performance on stage but I later realised that James Brown had entered the building, so the hollering and screaming was for him. After the show he came backstage and congratulated us on our performance. We were really giddy and school girlish because he had come out of his way to talk to us and he was at his peak at the time. We then met him again four months later when we opened at The Apollo Theatre in Harlem and the same thing happened with us performing and him entering the building. Again Mr Brown came back stage to congratulate us but this time he asked us to join his review. Oh my god this was the man I admired for many years going to his shows as one of his fans hollering and screaming. Mr Dynamite is here in our dressing room asking us to join his review!! We thought about it and joined him about six months later for just over a year. The other girls decided they had enough of travelling on the road and wanted to return back home for several reasons which will be revealed in my book. I went to Mr Brown and told him I’d like to stay. He said ‘Well Miss High, nobody told you that you had to go home, I didn’t fire you so stay and be my personal background singer’. I said ok and it lasted for over 30 years. I’m elated as I learned so much from him as I was only 18 when I started with him. It’s been a great experience, he was my mentor, my brother and my father. I worked closely not only as his background singer but I travelled with him doing his hair and doing the payroll for all of his collective. It was a bitter sweet experience as I’m sure you know he was very firm and fined us for different things on stage. But I don’t regret it and he was a great entertainer and I feel that everything I learned and know was through Mr Brown.

Record reviews These reviews are of an eclectic fashion with a classic soul jazz best of, some new soul funk and jazz solo albums, an all star collaboration of an Italian stallion and a remix project from Foreign Exchange. There is also a classic 2 albums on one CD, another M+M remix project and an advance heads up from the soulful house genre. So it's a right pick n mix selection of edible quality beats.. Enjoy ... Da Buzzboy Honey Larochelle - The Yes Feeling Written and delivered by an evolving singer songwriter Honey Larochelle, this album has a winning formula full of harmonious, melodic, varied key changes and musicianship qualities. Sounding maturer than her tender years Honey’s voice could rival Joss Stone or Faith Evans easily on the mid tempo 70’s grooves Heaven and Be Your Baby. Hey Love and Yes The Feeling are good contenders of contemporary soul merging with commercial crossover. Embracing a perfect balanced vocal and rapping delivery Canadian Girl is the funkiest interweaving cut aided later by Dear John sounding very funky and Graham Central Station influenced. Whose Gonna Love You and The One That Got Away both hallmark some classic doo wop production and an equal balance of reggae, funk and soul is blessed on One, 2 Three and Open My Heart. Flipping the script check a sleazy and sexy organ grinding Back Of My Car and the uptempo jazzy rhodes brass and funky Fight For Him. Very impressive!! Leon Thomas The Creator 1969 - 1973 The Best of The Flying Dutchman Masters BGP Leon Thomas’s vocals had the most versatile and unique instrumentation quality that befitted the new spiritual direction jazz was entering. Encapsulating with his extraordinary yodeling techniques Leon reigns supreme on all fifteen chosen titles. He also wrote the majority of these funky, jazz, big band and mellow compositions. His story telling on Shape Your Mind To Die, Just In Time To See The Sun and It’s My Life I’m Fighting For make compelling listening. Leon is enlightening on Creator Has A Master Plan whilst Let It Rain and Bags Groove get the Big Band production treatment. China Doll is the most exquisite individual worth checking and Leon showcases plenty of universal togetherness on the vocal scatted One and Love Each Other mixed with a contrasting blues influence Welcome To New York. Mind altering and captivating check out these creative Flying Dutchman masterpieces. Kev Beadle Presents Private Collection BBE Kev Beadle is a niche club/radio dj playing and compiling music for over 20 plus years. Collating 12 straight ahead meets fusion jazz, funk and soul influenced compositions, I could only train spot two Olli Ahvenlahti Grandma’s Rocking Chair and Reverie In Every Way. It opens with Here Comes The Family a steel pan and afrocentric spoken word cut followed amiably by a funky Grant Green Ain’t It Funky Now vibed Brotherhood. Quite a few tracks have the hallmarks of things I’ve heard before like The Pharoahs Freedom Road, Southern Energy Ensemble and Roy Porter’s Jessica evoking respectively afro funk rhythms by Carlos Garnett, the jazz soul of Tarika Blue and The JB’s Blessed Blackness. Kitty Bey famed Byron Morris gets mellower with an interchanging melodic Sunflower and Seeds Of Fulfillment’s Namasta is my album favourite with its journalistic syncopated tempura. If you like something a little left of the right check this out!! Bluey - Leap Of Faith (Dome) After 35 years as a recording artist since his Light Of The World days back in 1978, Bluey releases his debut solo album. Recorded in less than a targeted 30 days he’s co written sung lead (on occasion falsetto) and background vocals on 10 diverse tracks. The lowdown funky tracks like Stronger and Leap Of Faith show Bluey easing in like Edwin Starr with soft vocals and some spoken word linguistics. He lavishes on a High Fashion 80‘s boogie simulated Got To Let My Feelings Show and gets up close and personal housing up Ain’t Nobody’s Business. Secreted within are various influences like a Don Blackmon vibe on Take A Chance On Me. Another mellow cello song is If You Really Wanna projecting nice melodies and metaphoric sentiments. Express yourself listening to Live Like A Millionaire and you’ll be flying high like Freeze on the beautiful samba driven Sky. The man has finally come out from behind his incognito mask to reveal his smiling face!! Tweet - Simply Tweet Here are 5 tracks from the singing songbird who off her debut album back in the early 2000’s gave us the soul/R&B classic Oops, Make Your Move and the party anthem Boogie Tonight. Tweet sprinkles her unique brand of sweet stuff like Sylvia on Aretha Franklin’s Daydreaming very much to mine and hopefully your liking. This is far removed from her debut material as Tweet plays with a live music sound bed and delivers a hypnotic vocal on Way To Love almost in an early Rufus and Minnie Ripperton production. Keeping it classically retro and soulful Tweet expresses eloquently varied emotions on the ballads Sorry and Enough. Real music from one that would usually be considered another female R&B artist proving the point to not limit an artist’s talent and capability. Must get album!! 26 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

FE The Reworks Foreign Exchange release 21 remixes featuring Deborah Bond, Zo, Sy Smith, Phonte and Eric Roberson. Highlighting a few of the boombastic fantastic titles, check out the 90’s vibe on So What If It Is and the incredible 4hero mix of Zo’s Flight Of The Blackbirds. There’s some beautiful jazz soul on Fight For Love and All The Kisses feat Paris and Amber Strother. Stevie Wonder’s If She Breaks My Heart gets a mellow drum and bass touch feat. YahZarah and an infectious 4floor bouncer features a sweet voiced Chantae Cann on All Is Well With Love. Slow jamming Sy Smith and the multifaceted Phonte ooze on a serenading Love Songs plus Phonte duets again with Carlitta Durand on Gonna be A Beautiful Night. The Art Of You featuring Sy Smith is an amazing jazz fusion and mind blowing like Heatwave uptempo cut. Like Leroy Hutson sang there’s more where this came from!! Tabu - Tabu Records Reborn for 2013 Demon Music This is just a taste of things to come from the one time subsidiary label of both Sony and BMG records between the mid to late 1970’s and 1980’s. Hosting acts like Brainstorm, Manfredo Fest, Woods Empire, SOS Band, Alexander O’Neal and Cherelle, Demon Music have scheduled these reissues with added bonus tracks. The itinerary for 2013 -2014 includes the label’s flagship release Brainstorm featuring the late Belita Woods debut album with Lovin’ Is Really My Game, Wake Up And Be Somebody and the funk pounding Stormin’. Manfredo Fest’s infamous Jungle Kitten, SOS Band’s Take Your Time and Wood’s Empires Sweet Delight and Universal Love are some of the late 70’s and early 80’s club classics you can once again enjoy. Alexander O’Neal and Cherrelle’s classic 80’s albums and a not so available Sharon Ridley album make this series collectable for those who no longer have the original vinyl. Essential!! Jarrard Anthony - Ready To Live This is an independent soul artist whose music caught my attention via a music submit subscription I receive. Worthy of mentioning the track that initially caught my ears was Jarrard’s rendition of Weldon Irvine’s Don Blackmon composed I Love You which features a duet with Patricia Covington and the cosmic astral travelling Lonnie Liston Smith. Produced with brightness check out Lucky Day with its positive message and Damn Sista a mellow moog ode to a future figuratively speaking fine soul sister aided by the voice of Mr nice guy singer songwriter Eric Roberson. Also worth sourcing is a retro Love Unlimited sounding Never See Her Again. Jarrard’s voice is definitely one of smoothness and ooziness so watch out baby like George Duke for this soulful brotha!! Mario Biondi - Sun (Sony) Having met and interviewed this gentle giant and Italian Stallion I know this is a personal dream project for Mario Biondi. With Incognito’s Bluey who co wrote several tracks and produced the album, Mario collaborates with various leaders of the old and new school and from the intro to outro it’s like listening to a live show in ya own home. BNH Jan Kincaid co wrote Sun a plush swinging soul jazz opener, suiting Mario’s embellished voice. Come To Me is typical of how Mario rides a big band sound and on Never Stop he duets and harmonises with Omar on a Bill Withers Use Me rhythm. With James Taylor, Mario gets brass funky on Deep Space and later he two steps with minister of sensuality Leon Ware. He sings Italian on the highly strung orchestral samba production La Voglia La Pazzia L’idea and is equally smooth with Al Jarreau on rare grooved Light Of The World. Check out his brass fevered twist on Stevie Wonder and Syreeta’s Girl Blue, an Earth Wind & Fire influenced I Can’t Read Your Mind and his cover with Incognito of Boz Scaggz’s Lowdown with Chaka Khan. Pure quality deserving the highest production accolade as it’s all real time and live music. John Morales The M+M Mixes Volume 3 (BBE) John Morales accesses many previously unheard of vocal adlibs and instrumental parts of practically any song he chooses, like the corporate banks do to our hard earned money. In John Morales’ playpen he toys with many well known titles and on occasion percussively revamps their arrangements. All tracks on both CD’s are invariably reconstructed but Barry White’s Never Gonna Give You Up, Side Effects’ Alway’s There, Third Worlds’ Now That We Found Love and a previously unknown to me Hamilton Affair’s You Can’t Have My Love are the sore stand out musical thumbs on CD 1. CD 2 conjures some interesting conundrums starting with a dual male and female vocal on Loose Joint’s Is It All Over My Face which was previously released as two separate versions. T Connection’s Do What You Wanna Do and Skyy’s First Time Around are two more monster club hits also mixed with noticeable difference. 80’s classics I Want Your Lovin’ by Curtis Hairston and Do It To The Music by Raw Silk have had a subtle yet raw treatment that remains faithful to the originals. Marvin Gaye’s I Want You the most downtempo cut is stripped down to almost a bare minimum with breakdowns and build ups as the album’s finale. A must for remix connoisseurs. Odyssey Sessions Vol 1 2013 Bobby & Steve aka Zoo showcase some uplifting soulful house as exampled in Faith Hope & Charity with its punchy vocals and hypnotic gospel keyboard stabs. No Time Like The Present features Leroy Burgess and Tyrone Williams from their 1988 vocal session of El Bee & Tee’s version of Over Like A Fat Rat on Zoo Experience. Its got more harmony than the hairspray and gives you that happy feeling like Maze. Salaciously Sara Devine sings lead on Louie Vegas's Fabulous which is pure 2013 boogie. To get you in party mode Groove Thing with a funky male rap in tow works perfectly. My Everything embraces the 80‘s vocal, moog and synth traits with some wonderful ad libs. Exposed at the Miami Conference last month watch out for this!! 28 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

Biggroove Records Funky House Vol 1 Biggroove Records www.biggrooverecords.com For those of you who like your funky house with both an old and new skool vibe; Biggroove Records Funky House volume 1 is the album for you. Available as both a download or physical copy that can be delivered to your door! The album is made up of tracks from the labels 2 earliest signings E.K.A and Indiscretion. The album opens with E.K.A's Destiny Of Luv, great diva vocals, big beat and nice house piano which moves onto the MXT mix of Something More. Old skool club track to nu skool Jus The Groove, Indiscretion's thumping club sound is given the remix treatment by the label's Luvva Boyz. Compare this to the very smooth house/jazz original with its very sensual sax lead. The rest of the album sees different remixers take on EKA and Indiscretion dance tracks, giving them a big house feel. If you like your funky house you will not be disappointed! Ekow Johnny Guitar Watson 2 Classic Albums On 1 CD (Cherry Red) Johnny Guitar Watson already had a prolific history 20 years preceding this double CD package from the mid 1970‘s. Here you can sample his clever songwriting, distinctive lazy vocal style and charismatic guitar licks in a jazz, blues, funk and soul nature. From Ain’t That A Bitch revisit the dance floor classic I Need It, a sleazy, I Wanna Ta Ta You Baby and the inspiration to Redman’s 90‘s rap interpretation Sooperman Lover of Johnny’s Superman Lover. The album tails off with a sweet pizzazz jazz delicacy Won’t You Forgive Me Baby. The album titled A Real Mother For Ya was cleverly used in a food advert years ago and is followed by an improvised scat within Nothing Left To Be Desired. Sounding like Herbie Hancock on the vocoder check out Your Love Is My Love and the very topical, atmospheric and at times monologued concept of Tarzan. I found myself repeating I Wanna Thank You with its infectious groove and glistening production which pretty much sums up this double cd package. Great combo worth purchasing!! Kevin Le Gendre - Soul Unsung Soul music is generally known for its singers but in this book jazz writer and broadcaster Kevin Le Gendre highlights the players and instruments that form the music of soul, showing that, in musical terms alone, soul has created a wealth of riches. After initially exploring the relationship of soul to blues, funk, jazz and – yes – rock, he proceeds to use King Curtis’ ‘Memphis Soul Stew’ as a model to investigate the roles and development of the major instruments associated with soul – bass, drums and percussion, guitar, keyboards, horns, strings and, perhaps surprisingly, the spoken voice. In the later chapters the focus changes to take in an overview of soul in Britain, France, the Caribbean and Africa, and to consider the relationship of soul to hip hop and R&B. He ends by charting the rise and decline of Neo-Soul and identifies his own pantheon of contemporary artists who are keeping the music alive – Me’Shell NdegeOcello, Erykah Badu, Bilal Oliver, M. Nahadr, Omar, I.G. Culture, Peven Everett and Jhelisa Anderson. The emphasis throughout is on soul as a catholic music, constantly changing, absorbing new influences and fusing electronic and acoustic sounds. Reading this book will prompt soul lovers to search through their old vinyl for long-unplayed tracks and scour the internet for unknown artists. Above all it’s a reminder of the sheer majesty of soul music. Stuart Bradshaw

What was the rationale behind the Scottish Soul, Funk and Jazz Society? We (Paul Lafferty and Frank Devine), established the Scottish Soul, Funk and Jazz Society just over 14 months or so ago determined to re-establish quality soul, funk, house and jazz events in the West of Scotland, specifically the Lanarkshire area. As well as re-establishing quality events with top soul spinners and live PA's, right from our inception we were determined that the main focus and direction of any monies accrued from promoting these events would be to raise money for Mary's Meals. What is Mary's Meals and how did you become involved with this? Mary's Meals is a fantastic Scottish based charity which works with children in Africa. The beauty of the charity lies in the simplicity of its message. The charity feeds over 750,000 children in developing countries every single day of the school year. In order to encourage the children to attend school Mary's Meals provides a nutritious meal at lunchtime. It’s a 'win win' for everyone as the children are fed and they are also provided with a potential means of escaping the suffocating poverty all around them. Of course, and we get to dance to the best music in the world! How does the Scottish Soul, Funk and Jazz Society help these children? At our 'Mary's Meals: Giving Back To Africa' events - we promote 5 events a year for the charity - we charge a special admission

price of £7 which is exactly what it costs to provide a child in Malawi with a nutritious meal throughout the school year. We have been told that everyone who participates at these events gives their time free of charge or donates their appearance fees back to the charity. In an age of austerity this is quite a feat when people are struggling to make endsmeet. It’s an indication of our success in relaying the Mary's Meals 30 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

message that everyone who has agreed to work for us has requested that any fees due should be donated back to the charity, a wonderful gesture by them. US Soul legend, Howard Johnston actually flew to Scotland from Los Angeles and performed at Blantyre Miners Welfare Social Club to a packed audience which had travelled from all over Scotland and parts of England to see him. We also had a Mary's Meals Back Pack Appeal on the evening of the Howard Johnson concert where people donated a considerable amount of stuff like rulers, toothpaste, bars of soap, pencils and pens, all of which were shipped out to Malawi by us. Howard's wonderful example of putting others before himself encouraged soul spinners like Neil Hanratty (Bournemouth), Greg Edwards (London), Alex McDermott (Liverpool), Willie McKenzie (Stirling), Bob Jeffries (Kilmarnock), Mark Linton (Edinburgh), Billy Hazlie (Airdrie), and Joeboy Higgins (Glasgow) to waive their fees for the charity. We are also given significant assistance by a wide range of people, including Sharon Lafferty, Karen Brown Lindsay, Jen Dunbar, Finbar Francis Bryson, Gary Doonin, Charlie Docherty, Paul Murray and Arlene McWilliam Green, all of whom have rendered sterling service towards Mary's Meals and towards our calendar of events. So what has been achieved through promoting Mary's Meals: Giving Back To Africa events? Well, as well as everyone who attends having a wonderful evening listening and dancing to some of the best soul spinners from Scotland and England, we have just raised £7,500 in order to build a school kitchen in Malawi that will feed somewhere in the region of 2000-3000 children every single day. A magnificent gesture by all and one that we are extremely proud of. It’s humbling that so many people want to help others in poverty on the other side of the World. We are naming the school kitchen in honour of Howard Johnston and in recognition of the contribution he has made to heightening our profile and the profile of Mary's Meals since his visit. In a separate development we have just returned from an aid/fact finding mission to The Gambia, where in partnership with the editors of a book of poetry 'Changing Places: An Anthology of Verse' and Blantyre Soccer Academy, we delivered a significant amount of aid to a number of schools and to the Father Gough Sports Academy in the Manaji area of The Gambia. We are currently in the process of publishing a journal and DVD which will evidence the good work that was achieved in this poverty stricken African state. We have been involved, collectively and individually in raising a sum in excess of £40,000 for good causes over this past 24 months.

What about Soul In The Park? Soul In The Park is a larger event which we promote in one of the premier hotels in Lanarkshire, the Alona Hotel which is situated in Strathclyde Country Park in Motherwell. These are brilliant evenings in which people travel from all over to attend attracting a number of top soul spinners again. We are fortunate in having established a great working relationship with the management at the Alona Hotel and we have negotiated wonderful rates of ÂŁ50 per twin room for all our events. We have already had Gary Poole performing a live pa at a recent event and we are looking forward to welcoming Monique Thomas to Soul In The Park on 30th March which is sure to be packed out with soul music lovers from near and far. What are your plans for the coming years? Do you have other events planned? The Scottish Soul, Funk and Jazz Society have an exciting calendar of events organised throughout 2013. As well as our Mary's Meals: Giving back To Africa events in Blantyre Miners Welfare Social Club, we have, as indicated above, a range of events and interventions organised. We intend to ensure that our Soul In The Park events continue to go from strength to strength. We have the fabulous Monique Thomas performing live at Soul

In The Park at the Alona Hotel on March 30th and that will be a cracker which will cram the Marquee Suite in the hotel with black music lovers from all over. However, we have no intention of resting on our laurels. Frank and I are off to Birmingham and London in the next few weeks to participate in a range of meetings/events, the benefits of which will hopefully become apparent in the coming months and years. We are always attempting to take our events on to a higher level and are constantly looking for new spinners and live acts to come on board and assist us in what is a fascinating and fulfilling journey. We are also going back to The Gambia in November which will further evidence our commitment to poor and marginalised communities in Africa. Skills Development Scotland is a company registered in Scotland Registration Number: SC202659

Congratulations to Paul, Frank and their friends for their dedication to such a great cause. We will keep you up to date with the progress of this fabulous project. Anna

Event reviews/letters Leon Ware at Islington Assembly Hall 1/2/13 It was a last minute decision Leon Ware & to go along to this concert Vanessa Haynes but I am so glad I did. The crowd had been warmed up nicely by the support act Hannah Williams & the Tastemakers so Mr Leon Ware came on to raptuous applause. Accompanied by Vanessa Haynes on vocals and a fantistic band including Bluey, you really couldn’t go wrong. They performed the favourites including ‘I Want You’ which had full background vocals from the audience, ‘Why I Came to California’, ‘Rockin’ You Eternally’ and ‘Come Live With Me’ along with more. He is no spring chicken as we know but he still has an amazing stage presence and gave us a great night. Anna & Laura Deller! Betty Wright Islington Assembly Hall, Sunday Feb 17 2013 I wondered if she could still reach those high notes. I’d read that she possesses a six-octave vocal range and is adept at using the whistle register. After all she is almost 60 and was not feeling too good, troubled by a chest infection so much so that she even made her adulating fans promise not to post anything on YouTube because her “man voice” might somehow cast her in a bad light. Impossible surely! My worries were soon allayed shortly into the set at the grandiose Islington Assembly Hall, when it soon became clear that she still had it, as she started to blast out those distinctive high notes. Betty Wright is one of those sassy, irrepressible, no-nonsense soul artists who tell it like it is, she describes herself as being “real”. She certainly is! She gave us the old classics “No Pain, No Gain”, “Cleanup Woman”, “Thank You For The Many Things”, “Girls Can’t Do What The Guys Do” and an extended rendition of “Tonight’s The Night” with her eldest daughter Aisha, which all went down a treat with the sold out venue. At one point Betty had a dig at some of the many samplers of her records preferring to call them “stealers” of her songs, including Color Me Badd with their breakthrough hit, “I Wanna Sex You Up”, but at the same time went on to integrate snippets of James Brown, Kool & the Gang, the Staples and Bob Marley into her act, which seemed a little incongruous. Still, it worked. She came back to rapturous applause and gave the appreciative audience the sweet “Keep Love New” as an encore. One thing that was lacking was any on stage chemistry between the band and Betty. The band, who although competent, came across as rather inanimate. This was Betty’s show and the band had an aura of being unloved, which was exacerbated by the compère referring to them more than once simply as the “band”, and the backing singers as the “backing singers”. How difficult can it be to make a note of the people’s names I wonder? Overall she still has the voice, and the show, albeit a little brief, was good without blowing your socks off, even though the sound system wasn’t the best I’ve heard. She may be back to visit in October it seems, and if you like your soul music “real”, you could do a lot worse than to check her out. David Moran - Soul Survivor Member 32 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

The Jackson’s Unity Tour. Birmingham at the NIA 26.02.2013 Been waiting in anticipation for this event for a while now, I have not seen them perform since 1979 at the De Monfort Halls in Leicester. On entering the building and viewing the merchandise I realised how expensive most items were, the programmes were £15. I heard some music in the background and entering the arena found the support act was a Denise Pearson of 5 star. The next thing I noticed was the arena which can easily cater for 10,000 people was reduced, I could not believe this, there were only about 2,000 people there, obviously The Jacksons without Michael was not worth attending to the majority of the fans which was a shame. About 8.45 the lights dimmed and the intro to Can You Feel It rang out, they finally entered the stage to a rapturous applause and a standing ovation. Just seeing them on stage again in England was very emotional. Blame It On The Boogie kept the momentum going then to lights dimmed where the focus was directed to the big screen where they showed pictures and early footage of the family in concert. The footage of Michael alone brought a loud cheer from the crowd. Then performing their early hits, I Want You Back, The Love You Save, A.B.C, I’lI Be There, sharing the vocals between Marlon and Jermaine. They never missed a step, they still have it, Marlon showed his best JB moves which added to the entertainment, Marlon was the entertainer of the group telling stories about Micheal and bringing this tour together. They went into a MJ tribute starting with Wanna Be Starting Something, Don't Stop etc with a great reaction from the crowd. Then back to the J5 songs, Wanna Be Where You Are, Heartbreak Hotel, Looking Through The Windows. Jermaine had the stage to himself for a solo spot, 3 songs which included Why Don’t You Do, a big hit for him in the 80s, he has stage presence and a voice which is in fine shape. All of the group came back on the stage for a long version of Shake Your Body which was performed impressively with a lot of crowd participation, which ended the night on a high. The show will never be the same without Michael but if you are still loving the tunes and are a Jackson fan the show is still worth attending, so when they come again grab yourselves a ticket. Simon (Leicester) - Soul Survivor Member Fitzroy’s Round Up for Feb/March Well February kick started with the last Soul Network Mansion Party @ Ashton Court, Bristol. Many travelled up for the weekend and on the Friday night partied till 1.30am in a chill out area of one of the main hotels. Saturday night was packed beyond capacity with 700 plus dancing and prancing in the mansion’s three rooms throughout the night. Great atmosphere all round as many danced off some of the extra pounds they endured in their 3 course meal. Thanks to all who’ve come to the four events over the past two years.

Celebrating Valentines, We Love Soul hosted their usual three rooms with a special guest set from Mr Soul Spectrum Greg Edwards who kept the boogie room faithfuls happy dropping tunes like Georgy Porgy by Charme. The House room was jamming all night and the Party R&B room was in full swing too. Look out for the Bank Holiday specials 5th and 26th May at Hidden SE11 and check their Facebook and website pages for further info. Teedra Moses @ Jazz cafe. There has always been a great demand for this unique niche soul vocalist and she did not disappoint to a packed mixed audience at the Jazz Cafe. Her voice totally consumes her audience and I was, as were many, in my element when she sang Be Your Girl. Apparently going to be appearing at Coco in Camden in 2014 the demand is that great for her. One of the March highlights was

Floyd Miller & the House Of Slave gig at Scala Johnson Kings Cross put together by Percussionists

Dennis Dee Mac Johnson. Live sets from Atmosfear performing Creators Dream, Interplay and Dancing In Out Of Space, Root & Groove Element with Coko’s mature and mesmorising voice went down very well and Slave’s Floyd Miller with the Johnson percussionists were all appreciated and applauded. Myself, Dez Parkes and HB were slam dunking the funk and there was an impromptu version of Just A Touch Of Love that was the event’s pinnacle touch. Look out for more info on the full band coming over in the near future. Next stop Prestatyn for the massively attended weekender with 5 different arena’s. The heavyweight room was the massive and always packed Northern Soul one which catered for those then late 60’s and early 70’s diehards who still dance and dress the same with their own occasion athletic routines and mesmorising spins. Ronnie McNeir performed Friday which I missed as I was Djing in the modern room but I did catch The Vibrations who were well received and did my favourite Shake It Up, a two step rare groove choon. In the modern room Mark Randle, Terry Jones and Andy Davies created a nice ambience and I got to say thanks to the lovely people I met and for the appreciation during my debut sets. The whole set up is quite a spectacle with the fashion stalls and record collecting enthusiasts and stalls, so well done to Richard Searling for a job well done. Next year they have the mighty Impressions so start booking now.

I must advise you that Funky Nation at Ronnie Scotts is somewhere you must reach early as it was packed by the time I went on around 11.30. Great West end audience who love a bit of commercial with some deep funky stuff and it rocks around till 3am. Check out the advert for April and May for guest DJ’s as it’s on every Saturday. Chow for now!! Fitzroy Project 5 at Bar 10 Maidstone 15/2 My friend Tash informed me that a Jazz Funk band were going to play in Maidstone and why don’t I go along. Bar 10 is in the small Star Arcade in Maidstone and is a rather strange set up with a nice friendly bar and marquee that spreads into the main shopping area and can be made larger or smaller depending on the audience I guess. The event wasn’t widely publicized so it wasn’t jam packed but there were a few in our group and more trickled in throughout the evening. The band sounded great with some fab musicians and I so wish I had typed this up the day after because I might remember all the covers they did! They did do a great funky version of Bill Wither’s Use Me Up, which I loved, along with some latin stuff; Luther classics, Level 42 and even some reggae which I have to say the singer had a perfect voice for. By the end of the evening everyone was dancing and there was a great atmosphere. I am not a huge fan of cover bands but would definitely go and see them again and recommend you do too if they are in your area. Anna Masters of the Airwaves: Book launch I felt really privileged to be invited to this event but really had no idea what to expect. There has been much talk about the book over the past few months and now I know why. The launch was held in a bar in Farringdon and was heaving when I got to what seemed like a school reunion night. Piles of books everywhere being signed by DJs and artists; hugs and kisses all round and at one point it was mayhem! Everyone made their way downstairs to the party, which was stopped for a short while for writers and compilers Dave VJ and Lindsay Wesker to say their thank you’s and explain a bit about the project. The book itself is bit like a school memory book that are all the rage now. Easy to pick up and put down when you have a moment. It’s full of photos from the past, memorabilia, stories from over 70 contributors inlcuding Trevor Nelson, Chris Hill, Gordon Mac, Robbie Vincent, Greg Edwards and even our own Fitzroy who were either radio DJs, artists, producers or club goers. It is beautifully put together and really is something you need in your collection for the children, grandchildren or just a night in with your friends to reminisce. I love it and recommend you get your copy as soon as you can just in case they run out! I believe it is available in all good book shops. Anna

We would love to hear your reviews of the events you have been to. Please do forward your review (max 250 words) and photos by the cut off date and we will publish. anna@thesoulsurvivors.co.uk
