talks to Fitzroy

You come from a Pentecostal Gospel background. How do you transform from that protective in someways world, to the one that exists outside with the glam, fame and trappings of the music industry? It ain’t much different from when I was a kid when gospel music then is what is termed as R&B now. I’d sing before my Father preached at the church and my Mother played piano and I used to watch how my father handled the people in his congregation. He was a very strong and powerful preacher and growing up as a little boy aged 3 singing and imitating his father, that’s how I performed and approached things when I became older. We transcended and changed the style of beats as the Gap Band via the music genres of the time as we were coming through. We kinda skipped through the disco thing and started to add percussion and some hints of gospel with funky flavours. I still approach the songs today with the same feeling as that’s how I learned and I’m having a good time. Why was the band in 1967 called Greenwood Archer and Pine Street Band and later shortened to the Gap Band in the early 70’s? My older brother started the group in 1967, which I became part of in the early 70’s. Greenwood, Archer and Pine were the three streets of black metropolis in Tulsa Oklahoma where we lived. In the early 1920’s Greenwood was full of rich black entrepreneurs and millionaires. It was like the black Wall Street and everybody on that strip was black and everything was black owned. Something happened in the elevator with a black man and a white woman on their way down in a lift and when the doors opened she ran out of the lift to an audience of white people as though the black man had done something to her. An angry white mob burnt down Greenwood and all in the neighbourhood and this caused a riot. Archer and Pine ran perpendicular to 04 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

Greenwood forming an H and again everything was black owned on those three streets. We took on the name because of the story but the name was too long on the posters if you tried to read it whilst driving by, so we abbreviated to G.A.P. and once through a typographical era the dots were omitted and the GAP jumped and stood out so we just added the band. You had a large multicultural band that developed a psychedelic funk rock and jazz overtone like Sly Stone and Funkadelic. The first “Magicians Holiday” album highlighted the formula showcasing funk bombs like “Fontessa Fame”, “I Yike It” and “Tommy’s Groove” and some social conscious songwriting depth. How did you feel about the first album as you guys didn’t really seem to get the acknowledgement of its true merits till the third album when you signed to Mercury Phonogram? It was our very first venture and we were around Leon Russell, Joe Cocker and a lot of those guys and we were excited just trying to get our feet wet without really knowing what to say and how to say it. It was a learning experience and tunes like “Fontessa Fame” were just grooves with crazy lyrical ideas. “All in the name of entertainment”, that phrase has just come back to me as I haven’t repeated it or heard them records since the 70’s. We were just trying really hard and Buddy Jones came up with a lot of those crazy madness lyrics to fit with what we were playing and we just were going for it. When I hear them now I find it funny. It wasn’t till 78-79 that we found our direction but that was the progressive experimental journey. The 2nd Gap Band album on Tattoo was another flip on the script with “Knuckle Head Funking” a cross between EWF, early Commodores and the Brothers Johnson and the short but so sweet “Hang On To Yourself”. With noticeable distinction your voice at times has a Stevie Wonder ad libbing and growl style to it, so how influential was the 8th Wonder?

RAHSAAN PATTERSON

Speaks to Fitzroy You are named after Rahsaan Roland Kirk and born in the Bronx growing up in the Pentecostal faith and was cast in Kid Incorporated with Shanice (I Like Your Smile) Wilson. Can you give us some background of growing up and your move to LA? I moved to Los Angeles to do Kids Incorporated and prior to that I sang in church, around the house and on local streets. My older sister forced me to sing in a talent show that eventually led to me being cast for Kids Incorporated. My professional life began literally overnight and I did the show for four years. I later started singing for Martika on her debut album in 1988 and toured with her in the early 90‘s. I then met Les Pierce through Martika and we wrote my first solo album in 1992. We then went to MCA records and secured the deal to do the album. As a resident DJ at Twice as Nice I remember amongst the prodominently hip hop and R&B beats there were two purist soul cut records that both Steve Sutherland and I used to break the beats monotony. One was Derrick Dimitri Get It On Tonight and the other was your Where You Are. So much so we put Where You Are on the first Twice As Nice compilation album. What did you think of the Steve Silk Hurley’s remix? I absolutely loved it as Steve is one of my favourite remix producers and we also did a house version of Where You Are and we worked together on Get Here from Love In Stereo. During that same session we also did I’ll Go which was meant for my second album but we didn’t use it. When the Love & Basket Ball soundtrack was in process they initially wanted me to sing the version on the album but chose Donell Jones who had more notoriety. Did your version ever come out? Yes on a Soul Togetherness compilation. 12 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

Although it was a big tune that I was hammering at the time, I never realised you wrote Baby for Brandy. How did that happen? I wrote that with Keith Crouch whilst writing for my first album and he had invited me prior to work with a young 14 year old Brandy and the rest is history. Were you aware that amongst at least the fans whom I spoke with that Love In Stereo is considered thus far to be the fans’ favourite? It depends, I’ve done my own investigation on Twitter and such forums and for a while it seemed to be Love In Stereo but now it’s neck and neck with After Hours, which could be a US based thing but with the UK it’s clearly different. We spoke earlier on about Get Here and when we met 2 years ago back in Blackpool you advised me the break beat used throughout the track was The Message by Grandmaster Flash. The album ...was it produced by Randy Jackson of American Idol fame? No Randy was my A&R person at MCA and an executive producer. Individual songs were produced by myself, Jamey Jaz, Van Hunt, Steve Silk Hurley and one cut by Soulshock & Karlin. Humour reminds me of Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder, have you ever made that connection? Ahh really?? I know during that time many opinions of my first and second album in terms of songwriting and production referred to Stevie Wonder. Stevie has been a main influence in my life and musically and I’m always paying homage to all of the greats who’ve taught me to do what I do.

S D R O W with Ginger Tony

It’s all about the music... I Love this job! Probably cos (as Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff once wrote) “I Love Music”. I must explain, I find the summer months hard going as they dip in the quantity of new releases. That didn’t seem to happen this summer... If you’re about early enough to catch the “Jump Start” on Solar Radio you’ll already be aware of these, if not, IMHO you need to be! On a soulful/funky tip we welcome the return of The Sweet Vandals with “So Clear” and Laura Vane & The Vipertones and “Sugar Fix”. Both albums are full to the brim with dynamite vocals, funky guitar riffs and are as cool as you like. Another release that sneakily crept up on me was Carmen Andria & The Radel Azul Band’s “Things You (Should) Know” on Qalomota Records. When I say it sounds Old Skool, I don’t mean 1980s; I’m talking about 1960s. Beautifully made with real musicians playing real instruments, all 3 albums deliver funky soul in abundance and rock in a way I definitely approve of. It’s not that long ago, but if you cast your mind back to early June you’ll recall the return of 2 of the major players on the Nu-Jazz scene. Nicola Conte’s “Love & Revolution” is simply wonderful! It has an adventurous feel to it. Mr Conte certainly seems to be reaching into new areas as he covers Norman Connors, Simon & Garfunkel and re-works one of Northern Soul’s darkest gems “Gone With The Wind Is My Love” by Rita & The Tiaras into the swinging, uplifting title track. It’s an album I’m yet to tire of and the opening gambit featuring Gregory Porter on vocals is absolutely timeless. Track it down, give “Do You Feel Like I Feel” a spin and you’ll know what I mean.

fine Lounge, Bossa and pretty much making the NuJazz genre what it is today. Easily the finest track is the opener “Little Piece Of My Life”. Mario Biondi has one of the smokiest, jazziest voices I can think of but his soulful outings are always worth a listen. Available as a single CD /vinyl release “Change Of Scenes” also makes up one half of a special double pack deluxe edition of 2006’s “Handful Of Soul”. About the time you should be reading this (1st August to be precise), Grupo X release their 3rd album “As Hills Go By”. Once again I’m biased in my comments. I’m a big, big fan and my uncontrollable excitement when this dropped through my letterbox should be embarrassing for someone in their 40’s. But flip & blink, I don’t care! As good as anything they’ve ever made, this 9 track collection moves away from their latin soaked earlier albums and has a more grown up, mature (if you choose) vibe. Although the traditional Grupo X sound is still here in snippets “Reach” is stunning; it’s the “newer” sound that’s grabbed my attention. The lead single “Waiting All Day” is gorgeous (check out the single for the “Johnny Machin Remix” which adds a stomping Northern Soul feel) and “Little Bit Better Than That” is just one of those songs you feel you’ve known forever. Personal fave has got to be “Big Town”. It drives, lifts and is just so well constructed and produced. A bit like the whole album really – just go buy! Anyway, is that the time!!! I’ve been waffling away and you really need to be out picking up some of these little gems. I’ll catch you very soon. Ciao for now. GT x

Also back in the room is Mario Biondi, his latest project “Change Of Scenes” is a collection of unreleased tracks & new remixes. It’s all part of Schema Records celebrating 20 years of giving the world some damn

Kindred

speak to Fitzroy

Coming from the rich soul soil and home of TSOP Philadelphia, Kindred continued the reality story telling of the social climate in the black communities in the same tradition as Gamble & Huff famous 70‘s Philly sound history. This album is a continuation of where Far Away started in 2003. What keeps that thirst of creative positivity when so many groups start off that way but fall victim to the hit making process? The ever present struggle as a family and as artists keep lots of things in perspective. The current climate and state of the world fuels great creative expression because there's so much on our minds. Don't get confused, we want to make hits as well, that's the only way to stay relevant, so we did concentrate on the song writing aspect of this album very much. This album has a very 60‘s civil rights and 70’s black power and pride theme running with Above Water skits, the Malcolm X and Martin Luther speeches on Take A Look Around with Bilal, We All Will Know with Raheem DeVaughn and You Got Love with Snoop. Musically you’ve incorporated some of that swish production we heard on acts like The Stylistics. What is it, in your opinion, about that period which resinates through your album with a 2011 twist? About the album taking on 60s and 70s theme feel, I’d say the bravery and truth that came from the music during those difficult times helped to define a generation and inspire so many thru the hardships. I do believe that is what we were striving to do for the people who we feel rarely hear their story in the music these days. We did utilize certain elements from those time periods (grooves, samples, speeches) but it was important for it not to feel like a completely plagarized throwback record, we wanted it to definitely be a 2011 record. Magic Happens again lends itself to the love ballads from the many 70’s outfits. Is this your ode to each other?

Apart from the movement that was coming out of Philly, how big and important was the Go Go scene in the neighbouring Washington DC which Chuck Brown is universally recognised for his part in it’s prominence? Aja, being from DC and the influence of Go Go music there, is equally as important as the soul in Philly. It was important to pay homage to the scene but also to be sure it was authentic, so having Chuck on the album is like icing on the cake. Authentically You features Lady Alma on an uplifting Motown influenced vibe with a message of staying strong even in the face of adversity. This has got the potential of crossover commercially like Ceelo has had. Is that part of the plan? Oddly enough on Authentically You, we never thought of it like a single to be honest, it was just the part of the album where I felt we needed to do something fun and having Lady Alma on that took me back to our days at the Black Lily when things were fun and carefree. I like the metaphor of Love Has No Recession, showing its importance and status is more valued and richer spiritually than money at a time when so many struggle. Was there a defining incident that made you write that song? I think a few defining moments actually forced the hand on the writing of Love Has No Recession. My father’s passing was one thing in particular and Aja references her grandmother in the song. The love endures from people that have left an imprint on our souls. Why are the 2 instrumental intro and outros called The Sheddington? The intro and outros are called the Sheddington just so people would ask that question.... no seriously when musicians get together to practice and play they call it shedding....we added the ‘ton’ to make it officially our thing.... that's our theme music on the album. Your connection with the UK is cemented with your recent concert at the Jazz Cafe with Simon Precilla and appearing on a recent Luxury Soul comp with Ralph Tee who’s releasing your album on Expansions. What can you say to the fans about this album concept and why they should get it?

Well with Magic Happen I suppose it’s not a Kindred record unless we have an ode to our love on the record, so I guess you could call it that. I think though it’s a personal record that people can still find themselves in it whether you’re in love or not. There are lots of people making the "magic happen" everyday.

Well first off to the people of the UK we say thank you for your support over the many years. We are still striving to bring quality soul music to the people with emphasis on making classics cause that's what we enjoy. It is our hope and prayer that folks hear their story in this album or relate to it on many levels as it was for the people mostly on our minds and hearts as we made the record. God bless enjoy.

Giving the album a feel good lift is Chuck Brown busting loose with DJ Kool on Going To The Gogo.

Thank you.

Record reviews Rahsaan Patterson Bleuphoria Bleuphoria is Rahsaan’s latest experimentation of his vocal and musical prowess. It’s ballad mid and uptempo collaborations are enhanced with some ol & nu school soul surviving talent. Doing those honours are Jody Watley, Faith Evans, Lalah Hathaway, Shanice, Tata Vega and the Andrae Crouch Singers. Very atmospheric and ambient sounding, Rahsaan’s familiar and sometimes pandora vocals deliver firstly with a versatile version of The Flamingo's classic I Only Have Eyes For You. There’s a hint of Prince‘s 80‘s funk rock semblance on Ghost and Goodbye and an Art Of Noise Moments In Love twist on the hypnotic Making Love. The Andrae Crouch Singers nudge a Sounds Of Blackness elbow throughout the diasporal Mountain Top. Out of the 13 my personal faves are Crazy (Baby), Easier Said Than Done and 6AM. A definite exhilarating play all the way from start to finish experiencing the euphoria of Bleuphoria!! Soul Unsigned the 2011 (Summer) Sessions Phil Driver collates a nice Mr Sheen polished compilation full of varying retro 80’s influences. Plenty of moog bass and electro drum programming can be heard on the uptempo Moonshoes Boogieland, Max Sedgley’s All Around Me and Enois Scroggins You Saved Me. E.R.I.C. enticing and boogiefied Betcha Didn’t Know with a Jeffery Osbourne Plane Love vibe had me mesmorised like Faith Evans. Like Pleasure it’s joyous to have two classy jazz funk minimal vocal instrumentals with Katzuma With Time and the Afro beat Nairobi by Maestro Garofalo. Out of the various 4 floor selections, Katie Cole’s summer breezed Back Into The Sun and Kyra Simone’s Lets Just Be Friends are the most simple, catchy melodic yet infectious ones that caught my attention. No ballads but the albums defo got more bounce to the ounce like Zapp!! Tracy Cruz-Universoul Symphony-Tracycruz.com Experience some more Philippine surviving soul from an artist I first reviewed 3 years back. Interpolating live instruments, soul R&B rap and funk, Tracy creates a symphony of palatable sonics with positive and universal anecdotes. Lets Go Back reflects Tracy’s peaceful and tranquil musical place with an infectious chorus and a smooth rap in tow. Her duet on the inter-phased and changeable Flowers and Candy is definitely the slow jamming.com crew. Tracy’s lyrics on Struggle Reprise speaks universal volumes with a nice rippling harp orchestration. The uptempo and uplifting numbers come courtesy of Dream Flight and my favourite jazzy and soulful Happy. With 2 short but sweet Peace Of Mind interlude’s and the military drummed Mind Travel, you’ll find this assortment as plentiful as a tin of Quality Street’s chocolate. Out August 2011!! Harvey Mason Groovin’ You - SoulMusic.com Out Now Instrumentalist, composer and renowned pioneering drummer Harvey Mason’s 4th Arista album gets an expanded edition release with bonus cuts. With comprehensive sleeve notes from Soul Music.com’s founder David Nathan, this 1978 classic sounds amazing 33 years later. It resinates a touch of Earth Wind & Fire in it’s music and vocal production at times, exemplified on I’d Still Be There, The Race, We Can, Never Give You Up and Say It Again. The jazzier dimension is represented by two inspiring instrumentals Wave a Xylophone and Marimba solo’d downtempo groove and a smooth Katuai featuring Bob James, Lee Ritenoir and Ralph MacDonald. Last and definitely not least are three versions, 7”, album and 12” of Gusto’s Disco Revenge sample Groovin’ You, the infectious stand out dance cut featuring Harvey’s brother Kenny on lead vocals. Definitely a groove to make you move if class is were you spend your brass! Kindred-Love Has No Recession - Expansions Always promoting positive love and social messages of unity within the black community throughout the American townships, Kindred share the vision with a few chosen guests Snoop, Bilal Lady Alma and Raheem DeVaughn. Many of the songs champion the 1970‘s blaxploitation soundtrack template, especially on We All Will Know, Take A Look, Sticking With You, Magic Happen and the funky instrumentals The Sheddington intro and outros. Chuck Brown and DJ Kool bust loosely on Going To The Go-Go and throughout the cd the 3 part monologued Above Water depicts the economic and social climate of the USA today. Hints of The Chilites and the 60‘s civil rights movement influences are evident as well as the Motown themed Authentically You in this retrospective concept. Kindred have not strayed consciously “Far Away” from whence the titled hit broke in 2003! Nice album!! Jill Scott - The Light Of The Sun (Blue Babe Records/Warner Bros) A long wait since her last but worth it! A change of label, still a joyful playful vision of meaningful soul and dance. The easy loping beat of “So In Love” already a number one hit in the States sets the standard closely followed by the beauty of “So Gone” (what my mind says) “Hear My Call” with a seamless tapestry of strings woven by Larry Gold is also very easy on the ears. Eleven years since her debut “Who is Jill Scott?” her voice still has that captivating lift that moves the heart and spirit. An album destined for a long tenure on your decks. Bobbi Humphrey Freestyle SoulMusic.com Out Now The young, gifted and black Bluenote prodigy flautist Bobbi Humphrey’s second Epic album Home Made Jam is tasty enough for a second outing, produced by the rhythmic hands of percussionist Ralph MacDonald. Bobbi introduces a more sweet vocal substance to her album concepts as well as keeping the musicality real on the slower jams I Could Love You More and Good Times. There is an album and 12” version of Home Made Jam featuring the familiar harmonica overtones of Stevie Wonder complimenting Bobbi’s trademark flute playing. There are two stand out right instrumentals, My Destiny and Sunset Burgundy with a 7” bonus version included worth checking. Freestyle and If You Want it are a slight reminder of her work with the Mizell Brothers earmarked in her challenging history. With the aid of Marcus Miller, Gwen Guthrie and Tom Scott, this is indeed a tasty piece of homemade musical jam! Ramsey Lewis The Best Of Ramsey Lewis - Jazz Fm Records One of the most celebrated classical jazz keyboard players has 32 of his best tracks compiled by Jazz Fm. Many amazing Ramsey Lewis cuts shine from the first cut of Stevie Wonder’s Spring High to the happy Every Chance I Get and the funktastic Tambura. Robbie Vincent introduced me to the seductive Romance Me 30 years ago from the Three Piece Suite album and Ramsey’s cover of EWF’s Thats The Way Of The World is one of four EWF influenced tracks on this double CD. The spiritual EWF penned Sun Goddess headlines side 2, with four bullets from the classic Tequila Mockingbird album That Ole Bach Magic, Camino El Bueno,Victor Feldman’s Skippin’ and the album title. From the mesmerizing Salongo comes the much sampled Brazillica and from the Legacy album Ramsey gets jazz funky with All The Way Live. Versatile for the longest while, this is a must have CD! Funky Sensation - Jazz Fm Records Compiled by Jazz FM’s MIke Vitti, relive the 70’s & 80’s jazz funk and disco anthems and a few unfamiliar ones. Side Effects vocal supreme vocal Always There and Gwen McCrae’s Keep The Fire Burning always set the dance floor alight. Chic’s I Want Your Love (Dimitri from Paris) mix and Teddy Pendergrass’ The More I Get, bring the delightful string arrangements that always touch our soul surviving hearts. Gary’s Gang, Lets Lovedance Tonight gets a nice funky sax instrumental edit and side one ends with the galactic SlickSpace Bass. Side 2 includes Odyssey, Inside Out, George Dukes, P Funky Reach Out and UK Brit Funkers, Touchdown, Ease Your Mind. Seawinds, He Loves You and Ned Doheny, To Prove My Love supply the Jazz Fusion and the lesser known mortals Steve Shelton, Don’t You Give Your Love Away and Orlando Johnson, Turn The Music On embrace that infectious 80’s moog boogie groove. Funky and sensational!! Americano Rock Your Soul - BBE Ex Reckless Records music boffin Zaf releases a “blue eyed soul” comp that champions what Dr Hook and Chicago had commercial chart success with. Possibly my chosen cut is Eric Tagg, Living Off The Love with an almost early Leroy Hutson production. Jaye P Morgan, Can’t Hide Love is very close to the EWF version musically but not vocally. The most weird and wonderful concoction is Jesse McFall & The Funk Elegant Orchestra, a Barry White and Gene Page flavoured Thought You Ought To Know with an unusual off key vocal that will work for some. Much of the album has the black R&B watered down to pop standards that intermingled in the 1970‘s. The singing is not exceptional but the music on Life Force Slow Dancer and Society Of Seven will most certainly capture people’s attention step rare groovers. There is a gap in the market for this to flourish. Out now!! Josh Milan presents Honeycomb Music Vol 1 - Honeycomb Music Putting the rights to what’s wrong with 21st Century live music, the gifted Josh Milan of Blaze goes right black to the future. The intro monolouge on cd 1 is compelling followed by T’Zelle floating vocally on the enchanting Kipepeo. Josh’s female entourage continues to ride the melodious via rhythms Angela Johnson, Forever I Do, Cinnamon Brown and the disco b lined Under The Moonlight and the euphoric vocals of Dawn Tallman on GOD. Cd 2 opens with Lamone’s impassioned delivery of a percussive Your Eyes and two Afro latin warrior dancers from Honeysweet. First feat Cassio Ware is a prophetic Fela meets Roy Ayers Centre Of The World tinged Honey Sweet, Wake Up and feat Raul Rosario, a snake hips charming instrumental, We Miss You. The pierre d resistance is my fave tune of 2011 with China Black, Till You Go Home, the ultimate bad boy boogie to round off the sweet suckle of Honeycomb Music. Sarah Fonteyne - Debut - Aesthetic Sounds We may have our own budding UK Adriana Evans songstress after rapping my ears around this salacious collection of soul jazz with pizzaz like Patrice. Deserved of any publicity singer songwriter, Sarah Fonteyne’s mature tapestry is weaving the pattern for the younger new cool to embrace the musical principles of the old school. A nice balance of 21 century production and musical equilibrium is written all over this Debut album. With not a duff track in sight we hear everything eclectic from flute, piano, double bass, brass and fatback drums over a wonderment of soul jazz and broken fusion beats. Spoilt for choice experience her rendition of Stevie Wonder’s If She Breaks Your Heart, Music Is The Key, B.I.S.Y., Messing and the jazz jumping Breathe. Bringing you the sounds of London Town I am joining the campaign for Sarah Fonteyne. Awesome!! 24 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

Down To The Bone-The Main Ingredients-Dome Conjuring up a live session at an intimate venue, Down To The Bone bring an abundance of that instrumental funky jazz the UK have developed for over 25 years, that often tires me. However, this is very snazzy and reminiscent of a few recognisable established predecessor outfits but deserves it’s own individual merit. A Change Has Got To Come a pulsating jazz funky and Second Nature with its EWF ad lib vocals cater definitely for the dancers. Ex Incognito vocalist Imaani co writes and sings with panache on Watch Me Fly and Closer. Changing the tempo, A Universal Vibe takes a subtle ubiquitous journey in the vein of Roy Ayers. The album finishes with Cut and Run, a rumbling bass line, brass stabs, Ramsey Lewis piano rolls semblance with a throwback sound to the early 80’s Brit Funk era. Stuart Wade’s multitasking production mixing, arranging and editing skills are to be commended. Good stuff!! Mario Biondi-Changes Of Scenes-Ishtar Celebrating Ishtar’s 20th Anniversary, their vocal Italian stallion Mario Biondi lends his trad jazz tonsils to soul funk and hip hop break beats genres as well as the bossa and mambo he’s famed. Check out the lush samba strings on No Mercy For Me and the begging to be sampled break beat on On A Clear Day. An organ stabbed A Handful Of Soul and the reconstructed alternative bossa version of This Is What You Are typify the albums pristine production. Mario’s voice for a minute may take some getting used to on these varied grooves but are musically complimented as heard on I Can’t Keep Crying parts 1 and 2. More uptempo freestyle jazz is supplied via a rollocking Rio De Janeiro Blue and a subtle bonus Dimitri from Paris mix of This Is What You Are. In the words of the late Eddie Jefferson this is 2011 freedom jazz dance! The Real Sound Of Chicago and Beyond-BBE Mr Peabody Records dispels the myth of Chicago’s musical legacy being one of just House music, and uncovers a few buried gems!! Kurtis Scotts, Build exemplifies the classic soul progression embraced by soul fans north of the UK. Hot Peppers Cancion Ritual instrumental has a Don Ray Body & Soul meets percussive disco latin rock sound. Clive Stevens’ Chega mimics a native Chicagoan Patrick Adams’ Sine synth style and Total Eclipse, Disco Boogie delivers some bass line funky boogie! The aped Windy City sound championed by Curtis Mayfield comes via Space Arks social messaged Do What You Can Do. The Energy Commission convert a bullet version of I Only Have Eyes For You. Check for the mellow cuts from The Moore Brothers, I Want To Marry You and its impromptu instrumental jazzy jam break and Crystal Winds sublime Cuba Gooding sounding It Ain’t Easy!! Enjoy a few Euro disco templates that Chic, Peter Jacques Band, Michele and Chantel Curtis performed from Vanatti, I’ve Got To Break Away, Judy Clayton’s amazing Loves Gonna Find You and Nadia La Fonde’s Three Way Situation. I’ve been limited to name just a few but must mention Mugged By Love, Nate Williams... a hustle chanting jazz boogie bad boy for sure!!

HARVEY MASON Were you banging on the steps of your home, on the tables and walls like Randy Muller told me he did when he was a child before practicing for real aged 7, taking drum lessons and partaking in the school bands? Yes, I was playing with spoons, sticks, pot, pans, oatmeal boxes and banging on everything and anything. My Mom took notice and urged me to perform for anyone who came by the house. Thanks to her urgings I started formal drum lessons in the 3rd grade and from the very beginning I was better than anyone else around and my teacher took a special interest in me. The opportunities presented themselves so along the way I played in drum & bugle corps, orchestras, bands and eventually dance bands, all a part of public school music education programs. Eventually, I was making wonderful money freelancing but I never seriously contemplated being a professional drummer because I saw it as a very hard and inconsistent lifestyle and I wanted to elevate my life which was financially very poor. During my senior year of high school I read a Downbeat article featuring Larry Bunker and it sparked the desire to be a studio musician. They often wore ties to work and primarily worked during the daytime. Frequenting The Wonder Garden venue in Atlantic City, who did you see and how did they inspire you? The first artist that inspired me was a teenaged Stevie Wonder at a Motown review in a skating rink. That got me interested in playing the drumset, although I couldn’t afford a drum set. Aged 16 I had a card that allowed me to 26 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

go and play in clubs and I got to see every jazz artist that came from New York to Atlantic City. I saw Roy Haynes, Art Blakey, Cannonball Adderley, Yusef Lateef, Roland Kirk, Ahmad Jamal, Jimmy Smith, Billy Hart and too many more to mention here. It was so much fun and I learned a lot. I never really had formal drum set lessons until I went to Berklee, previously I had orchestral snare drum lessons and I developed my chops just from playing snare drums. You studied under Vic Firth learning a multitude of instruments including the marimba, vibraphone and xylophone? When I transferred to New England Conservatory at the invitation of President Gunther Schuller, I worked like crazy to catch up with the percussionist already in attendance. I’d only played tympani in high school and none of the other mallet keyboard percussion. In short order I was in the regular percussion rotation for the “A” orchestra and wind ensemble. My proudest moment coming when why Vic Firth called me the hardest working student he ever had. I’m extremely proud of that. You mentioned Billy Hart earlier; is it true he was instrumental in linking you with Herbie Hancock? Absolutely, I met him as a kid and he was very encouraging and always supportive. He was always talking about me and mentioned me to Herbie, advising him to check me out for his new band.

We hear the result on audio but what was it like to be part of the innovative Headhunters project with the tornado twisting Chameleon, your arrangement of Watermelon Man and the deceptive Sly as the synergism is unbelievable? I had moved to LA in 1970 to live my dream of being a studio musician. I was prepared to excel in all kinds of music and pursued that quite successfully. I still loved jazz and followed different bands, Billy Hart was with Herbie Hancock and I used to check them out and Herbie was with Miles Davis. When I got the call from Herbie I had already made big records with Bluenote during that fusion crossover with Donald Byrd and the whole crew as we had like a factory production going on then. So in the middle of that Herbie called and having loved what he stood for, I stopped working in the studios to devote myself totally to him as I wanted to be musically successful with him. The opportunity was amazing and we spent a lot of time rehearsing and creating the music. The vibe and music just came together and it happened quite easily like we were meant to play together. It was a great time for me, I heard the Watermelon Man arrangement whilst in the shower and told the guys. Bill Summers was an Afro-musicologist and he introduced me to different calls using the Hindihu whistle. The idea to include that on the track came from him. I wanted Herbie to have the success that I helped others to have as he hadn’t had a big record up to that point and I wanted people to hear him. So I dedicated myself to that album and making it as good as it could be which was amazing. After the record I didn’t go on the road which caused a bit of a riff as I went back to living my dream of being a studio musician. I believe there was a divine intervention as to why we didn’t speak as planned yesterday and I’m assuming that you may have heard... about Fonce Mizell? No did he die? Yeah he did. Ooh wow I was just talking about him not too long ago,I knew he wasn't doing too well..that’s really sad. Indeed and as part of the Mizell Brothers with whom you’ve made legendary recordings on Johnny Hammond's Gamblers Life, Gears albums as well as Bobbi Humphrey's Black & Blues, Satin Doll and Fancy Dancer ones. Lest we forget Donald Byrd’s Blackbyrd, Street Lady, Places and Spaces, Caricature and Step In To Tomorrow albums. How colossal a force were they in not only the jazz fusion world but the black music history period with their Motown history also? The question you asked is the statement I would make. They were immensely important dating back from Motown to the beginning of the fusion crossover music. I learned a lot working with them about how the music was created, so when I worked with Herbie I knew what it took to get the music to be acceptable across multiple genres. I had a feel for that, having worked with them as though we were in a factory at a place called the Sound Factory. We’d stay there for a week at time or more doing two or three projects, sometimes not knowing who the artist would be. We had a ball and they were very creative and a good crew to

work with. It was like what I heard happened at the beginning of Motown; it was a fun time. I’m sorry that you only heard that via me. The music that came out of the Sky High camp could be mistaken for being a movie soundtrack to the lives of the black community struggling to find a place in America at the time of so many social changes. In creating those soundscapes and living the experience I’m guessing that in those tough and challenging times, like Gary Bartz’s classic music was, and always has been your sanctuary? Music has always been my sanctuary and as I became mature, whatever was going on in my life I was so engulfed in music that nothing else mattered. It’s uplifting and you leave everything at the door when you start playing music. Before and during your record deal with Arista you made tidal waves on various artist’s albums including Patrice Rushen, Grover Washington, Freddie Hubbard, Isaac Hayes, Chic Corea, Dave Grusin, Seawind, Hiroshi Fukamura and George Benson. How did you maintain the energy to put together that distinctive trademark military drum style, as you live a fast and furious life with your hands flying all over, with coordination? For many years I ran and tried to stay in shape but to be honest it’s just natural and a gift. I haven't been as active physically and probably did beat myself up too much. I do cardio 5 days a week in the gym and not as much weight lifting, as it’s very natural to me. Even at this advance stage I’ve gone back to learn to play drums in a formal technical manner. I had technique before but it’s exciting to learn new things. My style is an accumulation of all my varied musical experiences. I’ve tried to come from a musical approach rather than a drummer’s perspective. I love music much more than I love the drums! Working on the the Brecker Brothers’ sessions, an impromptu conversation with Clive Davis at Arista whose book you’d just read led to him offering you a five album deal as a solo artist. Yes, it was amazing the way that fell into place as I had no immediate plans to become a solo artist. I had begun to write more as I saw the value of that and was exploring different musical concepts (i.e. the drum and bugle corps approach). I was prepared having worked day and night on various writing projects, sessions and thoroughly understood its process of making records. Having spent valuable time with Quincy Jones, he became my major influence for producing and fostering relationships. I just followed the Quincy Jones model. The debut Marching In The Streets album’s masterpiece includes the Headhunter anthem Wild Rice and Hopscotch with an A list of players including Herbie Hancock, Benny Maupin, Blue MItchell, Randy Crawford and Hubert Laws who were already very established artists. I’m assuming Arista did their research on you but how did the label react to having such musical royalty brought to the album? I got the impression Clive didn’t care much about that and this became evident in my future recordings. They didn’t make much fuss when the first record came out and were more concerned that I had a hit. Clive directed me more and more in that direction but he let me have my own devices on the first one. Being a bright and intelligent man he’d done his research on what I’d done musically and was hoping and guiding me to have a hit by design from his standpoint. To my credit he did allow me to produce everyone of the cds I did for him. My son, Harvey Mason Jr. works with him extensively now producing the winner of American Idol and other acts on his label. www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

WE ARE INTRODUCING AN INTERIM MAGAZINE TO MEMBERS ONLY! The next issue will go out in September and include interviews with: Louis Vega Beverley Knight and DJ Robbie Vincent!!

Out The Box

......its not all four to the floor you know! Words DJ Marcia Carr In the last few months we’ve all heard about numerous sad losses to the world of Black music; from jazz, soul, funk through to House/Electronica some special people have gone: Alphonzo “Fonce” Mizell (Michael Jackson/Bobbi Humphrey/Donald Byrd), The Gap Band’s “Godfather of bass guitar” Robert Wilson, DJ David Camaco who flew the New Jersey flag for US House, and UK-wise Kenny Hawkes, one of the original Girls FM pioneers, all of whom I dedicate this page to. On the singles front, look out for new material from Lifenotes recording artist Eric Riko. Touring extensively in Africa, Europe, S E Asia and the US, just this spring, his song ‘Wonderful’ – the AfroLatin Rumble; a mix up of Boogie, Afro Soul from the EP ‘Feeling Wonderful’ EP also includes a exhilaratingly fresh rework of ‘Journey Back To Me’ – out now on all major digital outlets or Eric’s website – http://lifenotesmusic.weebly.com For the generation of newer DJ’s, some of whom have toyed with re-edits of their favourite music, should definitely get their hands on the fabulous rework of ‘Behind The Groove’ by Teena Marie for their sets. Lovingly revived (did the song ever fade away, I think not!) by New York’s John Morales, he has stripped things back to the basic music – his new M + M mix fixes upon the raw essence of Teena’s voice and her instrument handling, with John’s added signatory efx as well as a simple smooth and steady beat justifiably makes this an essential R & B gem for dance floors everywhere. Another track that has been spruced up is classic ‘Dancing & Prancing’ Candido. This 2011 remake comes with light orchestral piano stabs, layers of brass, an infectious bass synth throughout; the whole arrangement has a wonderful swing to it, plus the uncredited female vocalist has nicely covered the lyrics in her own style. I’ve tried and tested this white label at many a gig as I am sure the producer has to great success – thanks to you whoever you are. Please continue to come with the Boogie flow ;)

I never have enough room to even begin to tackle LP’s but do check out the following cuts made for airing, playing and dancing to: the Horse Meat Disco DJ duo are onto their III Strut compilation instalment of the same name – go for dancer Dimitri From Paris & DJ Rocco’s ‘Downtown’. The entire Messages 3 (what’s with the no. 3?) double CD compiled by UK talent Martin Atjazz for Papa records featuring names such as Noel McKoy, Leroy Burgess and includes remixes from Broken beat (IG Culture, Atjazz), R & B Soul (Reel People) and plenty for you House heads. Away from the four to the floor if you relish the sounds of African Hi Life, Latin and more world music influences definitely purchase ‘The Best Of Quantic’ by Quantic (Tru Thoughts) – my choice cuts include the highly acclaimed Mi Swing Es Tropical’, ‘Sabor’, ‘I’m Thankful’ just for starters. Making her entrance onto the Underground scene is Londoner Sarah Fonteyne whose formidable collection of Boogie, intelligent R & B Soul and Broken Beat songs are impressive and made with eloquence and finesse minus the random (pointless) expletives, her LP ‘Debut’ is out now. Trainspotters out there who don’t dance but collect vintage musical gems check out ‘The Real Sound of Chicago and Beyond on BBE with full length mixes – every Boogie and Disco track is a winner and beautifully compiled by Mr Peabody Records – nuff said! Catch me on Ministryofsound.com/radio/ co-presenting with the Ladyz™ every Sunday 8pm-10pm and the last Thursday of each month co-presenting with Sy Sez on www.colourfulradio.com; 9pm-12am. Event reviews/letters Soul at Glastonbury? Not much! Never is at Glasto. I don’t go for the soul, not even for the music. I just love it’s out of this world non-music attractions which I reckon everyone should experience at least once. Soulful expectations were therefore low. Sure - I checked in at the B.B King gig to top up on some blues heritage. And Kool and his latest Gang put on a fab disco party on the final night. I also accidently discovered an impressive soulful house-dominated set from ‘Hercules and Love Affair’. And that’s about it from 59 live music stages! No – the highlight was a bar called ‘The Meeting Point’ and it’s wicked DJ’s. Pick of those was ‘DJ Bonebookbang’ (Dan Walters) who produced some fabulous old and new jazz funk and soul throughout the weekend and made it an oasis amongst the mud and rock music! And the large crowds present should provide a strong hint to the organisers – MORE SOUL PLEASE! Jonathan Mills (SS Member) Soul Network Charity Bash June 9th @ Cape, Wood Street This was a one off charity special to raise money for ACLT and Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. The Vibe Mistress, Vivy B, combined this fund raiser with hers and Floria’s Birthday bash to make it a double celebration. The venue was Cape, just a stone’s throw from St. Pauls Cathedral and it was packed to the rafters as people came to support two worthwhile charities and two lovely Ladies special day. With the Soul Network vibe working it’s way through every molecule of your body, it’s hard not to dance as DJ’s Da Buzzboy Fitzroy, Tony Rodriguez, Rudy Ranks, Vivy B and more, laid down the finest 80’s grooves next to Soulful R’n’B, House and sweet Reggae. The night was a major triumph with £4302.02 being raised. This will be divided between the two Charities and will hopefully bring some smiles to faces. Darrell.S Soul Kandi, June 8th @ Club Replay, Wood Street, Stockport, Greater Manchester You may be forgiven for thinking that you have read this review before. And in a way you have. The last time I reviewed this night was back in 2010. But since then the night has moved from the plush Jasmines Bar to the much larger Club Replay. This is testament to the sterling work and fantastic following that the Soul Kandi Boys have built up over the past 2 years. Musically it’s as solid as it has been from their early Tollgate days. As is the thing in Manchester, the music is quality upfront Soul. And when I say upfront I mean UPFRONT. DJ’s Roger Williams, Geoff Allman, and the Soul Brothers Mark and Darren seem to find tracks from albums that most people overlook. It takes a night like this to get you dig32 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

ging in your record collection again. Hats off to Soul Kandi. The next two are 12th August & 9th September. Darrell.S As a footnote, it’s only just occurred to me that both these nights were on Wood Street. One in Manchester the other in London! Bootsy Collins IndigO2 Sadly the former James Brown bass guitarist turned P. Funk figurehead fell a bit flat here in a quarter full IndigO2 on a Monday night. He didn’t do himself any favours by keeping the small crowd waiting until 9.45pm for a show due to start at 8.30pm and then we had to suffer a tedious presentation from his female back up singer to a young fan that had previously contacted the website. Come on Bootsy your strict James Brown show biz schooling should have told you this was all wrong. Eventually the great man did appear with a large band including vocals, horns, guitars, percussion, and the irrepressible Bernie Worrell on keyboards and synthesizers. Visually the whole entourage looked good and Bootsy went straight into the hits Pinocchio Theory and Hollywood Squares. Several Bootsy costume changes ensued which added to the spectacle. (This was a plus point for me after last year’s Earth Wind & Fire gig where the 70s African robes had been ditched for disappointing casual jeans and T shirts)! The old favourite “Flashlight” was another high point and it looked at this point that the band may yet turn this night around into something special. Still, this was hard work for Bootsy and his constant appeals for crowd interaction were greeted with only half hearted response. However, the evening was brilliantly lightened up during one of Bootsy’s disappearances for a new shiny outfit. The back up male vocalist took the stage to perform “Don’t take my fonk away” from the new album and turned in a remarkably good vocal performance on a great track with real soul and gutso! Top marks. Another highlight was the female back up vocal who looked like she’d been lifted straight from a 70s blaxploitation movie with huge afro, colourful garb, high heeled boots, mini skirt and skipping rope! She was an excellent dancer and her moves were very eye catching for the mostly male contingent present in the crowd. Bootsy re-appered after yet another costume change and tried to get the crowd going again with tired old P. Funk calls to “turn this mutha out” but I’d had enough by then and left to get the tube home, a bit disappointed overall with the concert. Chris Tyrrell (SS Member)

Bobby Womack @ The Jazz Cafe, Tuesday 21 June Soul legend Bobby Womack was tonight performing to an expectant and enthusiastic audience that included Mick Hucknell, Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood. He was given a rapturous welcome when he joined his twelve piece band and accompanied by his constant female vocalist Altrina Grayson. He started the set with Stylo, a recent collaboration with the Gorrillaz, and then concentrated on his music from the 1970's including Harry Hippy, Nobody Loves You, amongst many others, but we did hear some earlier material when Bobby and his brothers recorded under the name the Valentino's 'Looking for Love' and also included the Sam Cooke classic and civil rights song 'A change is gonna come', which I believe is a song close to his heart. Newer material 'If you think you're lonely now', 'I wish he didn't trust me' and 'Daylight' were also brilliantly performed. Some of my personal favourites were omitted from the set, but a 'Womagic' performance from one of the last great soul singers who is a true soul survivor. Miss Sparkle

Adriana Evans & Hilz @ Jazz Cafe 24 - 25 June I had the pleasure to warm it up like Kris Kross before during and after this transatlantic bisonic duo serenaded a class double act performance. Hilz of Hil St Soul is a different class and acoustically sang three songs, Smile, Pieces and Where Love Hurts from her forthcoming album Bring Back The Love effortlessly. As a bonus she sang the incredible Don’t Forget The Ghetto kickstarting a memorable evening. Adriana’s debut 1997 album revolutionised her as the Nubian Queen of hip hop jazz & soul. Adriana wowed, charmed and sang to us all with a tower of power energy usually associated with her predecessor soul sisters. She bellowed out Reality and Seeing Is Believing and Love Is All Around from her debut and Kismet albums. Her serene delivery of the conscious street penned Hey Brother and the boogiefied Surrender was for me totally captivating. An incredible voice with a childlike cuteness when she giggles with her excitement to perform makes Adriana a 2011 reigning millennium soul queen. Raphael Saadiq @ Roundhouse Camden NW1. 17 July 2011 I was fortunate to at lastmin.com obtain tickets to experience Raphael Saadiq raining in from California with fellow soul survivors Sue Chrispin and Charlotte Boogie Bates. A wicked venue almost a mini circular Indig02 was full with a mixed audience to rock & soul with the ex Toni Tony Tone and Lucy Pearl singer songwriter musician. With the ultimate professionalism Raphael whipped through many songs from his popular crossover Rollin Stone album including Heart Attack, Go To Hell and Moving On Down The Line. This was received greeted with raptous audience applause, as was to my delight his seductive Never Gonna Give You Up featuring Stevie Wonder and my highlight was the 9 and half minute version of the mystical Sky OMG bad boy!! Raphael as an artist has morphed his persona to embrace the iconic imagery of the 60’s period that black R&B rock & soul genres created in opening a new generation of super bands and looks super cool!! Brilliant gig!! 34 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

Mansion party in Bristol 18th June 2011-07-22 Vivy B and Jerry Bascombe collaborated their promotional skills to pull off an amazing feat attended by a mature 750 following from around the UK partying hard like Doneao at a luxurious summer mansion dinner and dance. Three sold out hotels and kind weather set the stage for a much anticipated and well planned event. The 3 course wine and dine started around 6.30pm with everyone dressed to impressed and ready to work off the pounds in the party, jazz funk alternative, rare groove and revival reggae rooms. Vivy, Jerry Bascombe and Mastermind's Louis were in the mix continuously till 4am banging the R&B hip hop and party soul classic to a capacity filled room. The jammed rare groove & reggae revival room was perfect and full of rewinds and slow dancing and romancing like the old blues parties. The Jazz funk alternative featured Tony Rodriguez, Darrell S, Da Buzzboy and Bristol’s local jazz funker’s Soul Train spinning the more specialised underground choices for the fling foot fraternity. There is easy access to all 3 rooms with good toilet and bar facilities in the grand settings of the mansion. It’s success has prompted a confirmation of 28th January 2012 so be warned this will sell out faster than speedy Gonzales can say “arriba arriba underleh undeleh”. Fitzroy Soulful Sunday 12 June @ The Horn & Horseshoes Harlow Raising the awareness of helping families dealing with cancer, the Silversmile charity organisation, in collaboration Soul Network's Vivy B, held an afternoon event with a selection of DJ’s, stalls and children's activities. Although the weather wasn’t too clever there was a good attendance from people travelling from London, Essex and the surrounding counties. Giving up their time, DJ’s Stretch Taylor, Colt 45, Da Buzzboy, Darrell S and MC Patrickson provided the music and entertainment which included Cameo’s Candy Dance in the rain and we didn’t need Gene Kelly! There was a variety of food from West Indian to Burger Bars and stalls selling jewellery and shoes as well as pony trekking and slides that the adults unashamedly indulged in too. Looking to do it again next year, let’s show some soul surviving love and support the cause. Fitzroy Boating Club on Temple Pier 26th June 2011 This popular event has been running around three times a year and is sold out with lastmin.com people scrambling desperately for spare tickets. Scott James and Stretch Taylor as alternate guest Dj’s to play an eclectic mix of old school hip hop, R&B, jazz funk soul, boogie and soulful house to an appreciative following on two tiers. It was my turn to spin and a new boat to christen with the best weather a June Sunday afternoon could muster. The music was kicking from 2pm-8pm when the boat actually docked with people enjoying the West Indian food cuisine, standing on deck, catching sunrays, dancing and prancing like Candido and licking the wood of the boat’s ceiling with the palm of their hands whenever they wanted a rewind…a regular ritual!! Always a good mixed happy crowd, try and experience it sometime soon! Fitzroy

We Love Soul 29th May 16th July Both the May Bank Holiday and July summer specials retained the atmosphere that We Love Soul is accustomed to having at Hidden with 3 busy rooms, 9 hours of jazz, boogie, soulful house and old school party 80’s and 90’s R&B anthem music variety and an eclectic selection of DJ’s. There is a warm outside smoking zone and continuous traffic throughout the night in all three rooms cooking on gas. HB Vivy B, Mastermind's Louis and Jigz have those party room revellers eating out of their hands whilst Clemy Reiley and Paul Trouble Anderson keep the 120bpm hitting the top of the Richter scale. In the jazz funk boogie room Colin Scott, Sticko Zazza, Lee Drummond, Scott James and Da Buzzboy revisit their formative deeper 70’s education to a crowd who like to dance fast and furiously. The next one is a humongous one on Bank Holiday Sunday August 28th with a special PA from the bad boy king of boogie Leroy Burgess. If you haven’t been try the next one…you might just like it!! Fitzroy Funky Sensation @ Ronnie Scotts W.1 This weekly event attracts a mixed West End and underground crowd that reach there early and party till 3 am to a mixture of old and new jazz funk soul and millennium treats. Jazz FM’s Mike Vitti heads the line up guests that include myself, Gavin Page, Ralph Tee and Chris Phillips on rotation with Ash Selecta joining the roster. The atmosphere is always upbeat and the audience love to dance to everything and anything. So if you fancy a boogie and some hot music in Soho give Funky Sensation a whirl!! Fitzroy

Weekend Girl, You’re The Only One, Why You Follow Me and Georgie Porgie, to name but a few. His band and female vocalist were all brilliant and helped to make this show quite spectacular. You would expect an artist of this calibre to be whisked in and out of the hotel five minutes either side of his concert but no….he stayed in the hotel for the duration of the weekend, having photos taken and chatting to fans. I think even the men wanted to be his Weekend Girl!! Well done Ralph, Richard, Mike and Ollie; we can’t wait for Blackpool in January. Anna Soul on the Harbour @ Ramsgate It’s always good to hear about local events wherever you live and although Ramsgate isn’t that local it is Kent and Hilary and I thought we’d take a trip. The event is free and held in a smart pub by the Harbour. We made the mistake of getting there after 10pm so unlike London events, it was in full swing and I felt we might have missed a lot already. Quality choons all night with a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere. It is situated right next to a Travelodge so worth staying and taking in the sights on Sunday. Thanks for a great night; I am now looking forward to the Margate Carnival/Soul Weekender on the 6th August which promises to be just as welcoming. Anna

Soul Shack @ Surya N1 Solar Radio’s Ash Selecta and James Anthony have been running Soul Shack since 1998 at various venues but the new found home is once a month in between Islington and Kings Cross. A mixed regular mature crowd get down like Gene Chandler to a broad selection of jazz funk and soul anthems, R&B classics and soulful house groove till 4am. Club Surya is the first eco friendly venue and has two floors and a luxurious relaxed setting. It’s on the 3rd Saturday of the month with good parking locations and a friendly atmosphere!! Fitzroy Birmingham Luxury Soul Weekend – May 2011 With a line up of some of the country’s finest DJs, a first class hotel and Eric Benet in concert, I struggle to see where you could go wrong. Always incredible value for money, this weekend lived up to expectations again. Eric Benet blew the crowd away with When You Think of Me,

We would love to hear your reviews of the events you have been to. Please do forward your review and photos and we will publish. anna@thesoulsurvivors.co.uk www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk
