It is clear that from a very early age you were a gifted musical child prodigy gaining classical piano training and learning various instruments, as well as writing, composing and arranging. Being so young and gifted, who recognised your talent and how did you deal with the pressure before you got your first record deal at Prestige, remembering you gained that aged 20 in 1974? It was a pre school teacher who noticed that I would light up, especially during dancing and singing activities. She told my parents of a program designed specifically for children, which I was enrolled for at University of Southern California. It was a relatively new graduate course for music education majors studying music development with kids. I studied there until my teenage college years and learned body eurythmics, music and piano aged five. I didn’t feel any pressure as it was a nurturing passion and gift. I had great teachers who knew how to balance my needs and wants. It kept me grounded and developed my skill sets and its given flight to the things I do in the professional world still today. Also at my school were Ndugu Chandler and Gerald Albright and we felt proud as African Americans that we attained that knowledge. In America today the criteria is that anyone who studies music has to understand the African American Diaspora as it’s key, even though some of the truth isn’t pretty. How much were you influenced by Quincy Jones and Herbie Hancock and anyone else? Quite a bit, as my parents listened to a lot of jazz and although I liked it I didn’t really take much notice. It wasn’t until high school that I started to get a vocabulary of understanding and realised Herbie Hancock had great harmony, rhythm and a melodic style that stood out. That coincided with a musical study at our school of American classical music, which was the study of jazz. In an all black high school situation we learned about sociology, social graces history and the music being a catalyst for that and we absorbed a lot of information. The forward thinking of our instructors helped us to understand and relate it to jazz and it's place in music. We had high school competitions and Quincy Jones used to be a judge on many occasions. I arranged the music for the jazz band occasionally and he heard and judged the band and singled me out and asked what I wanted to do and I told him I wanted to write music. He cautiously asked if I was ready for that as I had to be really good and I said yes. He’s watched me from a distance and he often referred people to me and he’s dropped a lot of pearls of wisdom on me. It’s good that you had that infrastructure on your cultural history as my limited memory of black history at school was that we were slaves and came from Africa. The Prestige label was like Bluenote championing the best Jazz influenced talent around with its subsidiary label Fantasy nurturing acts like the Blackbyrds and Johnny Hammond. I liken you at Prestige to being what Bobby Humphrey was to Bluenote, a young gifted and talented black woman who between 1974-76 released an album a year. The first was Prelusion, a more straight ahead jazz album with my fave Haw Right Now. You seemed to develop a more Herbie Hancock funk fusion flavour with Before The Dawn, especially on Razzia and Prestige's first ever 12 inch Kicking Back. The final album Shout It Out set the tone for the future Elektra albums with Hang It Ups prelude The Hump, the George Duke ish Roll With The Punches and the spiritual Let Your Heart Be Free. That line up of Harvey Mason, Hubert Laws, Lee Ritenour, Ndugu and Joe Henderson must have been incredibly experimental
and spontaneous at times. We can hear the result, but do you recall how rife the creativity was on that trio of successful albums? Oh yeah - on Prelusion I was around 19 and Joe Henderson was a label mate. Prestige signed me on the basis of seeing me at the Monterey jazz festival with a small combo of my high school band a couple years prior. We managed to get a half hour slot after winning a competition and a lot of record companies were looking for new talent. Like you said, Bobby Humphrey was a peer at Bluenote and there was a market for young women. I didn’t want a record deal but needed some money to help my parents towards tuition fees and it was also a platform without a major contractual commitment of having to make a hit record. Orrin Keepnews, the primary producer, deserves credit for nurturing and developing that ethos at Prestige. The label surrounded me with pro’s who would help enhance me. They encouraged Joe Henderson, Ndugu and Tony Dumas to play with me, whom once I was in awe of but felt comfortable working with and all were very supportive. With Before the Dawn I wanted to experiment with the music that was leaning towards what was starting to happen. This was a balance between the jazz tradition jazz and the commercial sensibility. I grew up listening to James Brown, Motown, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Sly Stone, Earth Wind and Fire and Marvin Gaye as it was what my peers were listening to. I experimented with the electronics and met Hubert Laws who agreed to play and I delved into the fusion listening to John McClaughlin and Jon Luc Ponty. By the time we got to Shout It Out it was clearer that what I was doing was pushing the improvised jazz and making it more funky to see how it felt. My relationship with Prestige allowed me to push the boundaries so it was ok as long as it was jazz orientated. I don’t know if a label would allow that experimentation to happen today and support it. How smooth was the transition of moving from Prestige to Elektra’s label? Shout It Out got a lot of commercial radio attention so when I signed with Elektra it coincided with their new jazz fusion interest which was more groove oriented. My label mates were Donald Byrd, Lee Ritenour, Grover Washington Junior and Dee Dee Bridgewater. The label had a platform that could support the aspects that were more commercial and gain more airplay, not just on the jazz but black R&B radio. When Hang It Up came out radio found it and jumped all over it but the label wasn’t ready for the commitment to signing the jazz fusion acts as they were used to white rock acts like The Eagles and Linda Ronstadt. They didn’t know how to develop the marketing strategy for the black acts like the rock acts. They knew that the music was important but didn’t recognise that black radio had the same set up to promote the music as they had on the white side. www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk

MORGAN KHAN talks to Fitzroy about Street Sounds & celebrating 25 years of the historical UK Fresh
As an Asian growing up during that period of the 70’s and early 80’s, where did you go and and get educated musically on black music? I grew up in an environment where radio was very white. My parents were into Sinatra and Mantovani whilst my mid brother was into Deep Purple and Uriah Heep. My older brother was still landlocked in rock and roll so I had very little exposure to black music. The most significant moment was getting a transistor radio on my 17th or 18th birthday and listening to Greg Edwards’ Saturday night Soul Spectrum show. I can’t explain how excited I was hearing music that was so new and fresh that, in fact, I remember one particular tune I heard on that show that resinates and is a ring tone on my phone. It’s called “California Strut” by Walter Murphy which is the B side of “A Fifth of Beethoven”. I was going to be a doctor; coming from an Asian half-caste background it’s what you aim at professionally but I went to Capital Radio in Warren Street in my school uniform one Saturday and met Greg. I heard, as corny as this sounds, songs about love, friendship and via a lot of Philly and these angelic voices I hadn’t been exposed to and my appetite became insatiable. I’d go into Greg's studio and meet some of the artists on his show, like Jean Carn, as I was hooked. I knew that my vocation was to be in the music industry. I remember moving out on a Sunday morning from my home in Ham near Richmond and went to a terrible bedsit in Lavender Hill. I was jobless and 12 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk
ended up working for Manpower employment agency doing remediable work cleaning plates etc. but with the purpose of getting into the Industry. What was your break into the industry? I remember Colin Curtis mentioning having friendly banter with you when you were a plugger or working in club promotions, possibly at Pye Records? I was doing a lot of menial jobs through the agency daytime and one night I walked past a club called Cherries in Coventry Street, London. This guy comes flying out landing in front of me on the pavement after being thrown out of the club. The bouncer looked at me as if he was asking what am I looking at and asked if I was a DJ and I instinctively said yes. I’d never spun a record before and he invited me to come into the club. I fumbled my way through and would play a record, jump onto the dance floor and dance with the punters and jump back into the DJ booth, and they loved my enthusiasm. So now I’m working for Manpower in the day and DJing at night and Greg put me in touch with Calender Records who had a track called “Magic Mandrake” by the Sarr Band. I got a job plugging records on Radio 1, Capital and established radio stations and clubs. I created my own promo company called Megafusion Promotions and hustled the majors without getting paid. The first of those records was Aquarian Dream’s “You’re A Star”.

STREET SOUNDS UK FRESH UNION Morgan Khan’s inspirational vision in transcending cutting edge music from the streets with art and fashion enabled him to create a historical and unprecedented event on July 19th 1986. Like Blaze’s Motown album title 25 years to the week on Saturday 16th July 2011, the Street Sounds UK Fresh Reunion celebrates that milestone at the Scala in London. With a collaboration of artists and DJ’s that championed or influenced that Electro Hip Hop movement, this promises to shake the capital’s foundations like Newtrament’s “London Bridge Is Falling Down” Electro Rap Boogie 1983 classic. The 1986 UK Fresh event was the biggest rap and first of its kind in Europe, staged at Wembley Arena, and hosted a line up of cutting edge Electro and Hip Hop talent performing live and together for the first time in front of 15,000 fans. Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Flash, Mantronix and Roxanne Shante were some who were part of that historical line up. In the UK the commercial radio airwaves were navigated by two essentially different presenters with a mutual passion and friendly rivalry for the emerging underground Electro movement’s audience. Mike Allen of Capital and BBC Radio London’s Dave Pearce had loyal followings and were approached by Street Sounds entrepreneur Morgan Khan. Morgan, who’d already cornered the Electro compilation market and was breaking Hip Hop tunes like BDP’s “South Bronx” on his Streetwave label, had an idea to collaborate and do a UK version of USA’s Fresh Fest. Neither of the 3 amigos had any prior experience of putting on such a huge event but with “Faith, Hope and Charity”, like Fun Boy 3, it did happen!! In celebrating the 25th anniversary, the confirmed acts include Newcleus (“Wikki Wikki” & “Jam On It”), Captain Rock (“Return Of Captain Rock”), The B Boys (“Two Three Break” & “Cuttin’ Herbie”) and Grandmixer D.ST, who appeared in the B Boy trail blazer film ‘Wild Style’ as well as the scratch master on Herbie Hancock’s monster hit “Rockit”. With more artists to be confirmed, the evenings MC is the versatile Dave Pearce who was monumental in presenting BBC’s first Hip Hop Show in the 80’s and introduced the early Def Jam tours at Hammersmith featuring LL Cool J, PE and The Beastie Boys. ty grace the wheels of steel at the 25th Reunion. The USA’s Arthur Baker (Producer/DJ/Remixer) was making street waves in 1981 releasing the electro boogie production of “Happy Days” by North End on Emergency Records. His immense impact on the Electro forum was cemented when, whilst working at Tommy Boy Records, he produced the infamous Afrika Bambaataa And The Soul Sonic Force floor shaker “Planet Rock” in 1982. Also in 1982, he produced another timeless Electro anthem “Rocker Revenge’s” excellent cover of Eddie Grant’s “Walking On Sunshine”. He also contributed "Breakers' Revenge" to the ‘Beat Street’ score and movie soundtrack, which he also helped produce. Both songs impacted massively on a regular Friday night that I frequented at the double disco championed by George Power and Paul Anderson at Electric Ballroom Camden NW1. Just a stones throw away from the 2011 reunion and almost 30 years prior, the memory of a packed dance floor inspired to body pop, pop lock and body rock is as fresh as this UK reunion. DJ Greg Edwards, a UK resident, came from the USA via Grenada in the late 60’s and to date is still cited by the late 70‘s and early 80‘s generation to have the essential listening Jazz Funk and Disco show ‘Soul Spectrum’ on Capital Radio that on occasion broadcast live from London’s Lyceum Ballroom. A fantastic and relaxed jive talking radio presenter, Greg helped to break the most happening UK and US Black music promos which influenced the audience that embraced the Electro movement. Lest we forget, he was a major influence on Street Sounds catalyst Morgan Khan, so his link to this event is integral in more ways than one. Nu Electro Stars confirmed so far are Darxid Lektroid & Xidus Pain and the artistic B Boy battle performances, Graffiti Exhibition, Street Sounds Memorabilia and so much more, add extra dimensions to this exciting and anticipated celebration. Record reviews R Kelly - Love Letter on Sony/Jive Records He has been in the music business for over twenty years writing for many others as well as himself. He holds the reigns throughout this set and his talent for writing seductive ballads shines all the way. The first five tracks have an easy loping tempo with lyrics to melt a few ladies’ hearts. On the song Taxi Cab the vocals start to build a more strident tone, Percy Sledge dramatics also enter into When a Woman Loves and How do I Tell Her? On Love Is he has lady vocalist K Michelle adding to the drama, verging on the hysterical! Radio Message has the Tamla Motown beat of the sixties and seventies. Just Like That returns to the sweeter sounds of the opening tracks and the title track is repeated towards the end with a Christmas rap included. Overall a good CD to play on a quiet night in with your loved one. Paul Clatworthy (Soul Survivor member) Eric Benet “Lost In Time” on Reprise This set kicks off with a beautiful mid tempo ballad Never Want to Live Without You and on the second track Feel Good, Benet is joined by Faith Evans in a first class arrangement by George Nash and Benet. Sometimes I Cry gets an equally good down temp setting from the same perfectly matched arranging team. On the up tempo Paid, Benet is joined by veteran Eddie Levert featuring elements of The Back Stabbers, on Take It Christette Michele, on Summer Love, India Benet, Good Life adds Ledisi to the mix. All eleven tracks have that uplifting vibe which is infectious in the nicest possible way, you cannot go wrong adding this to your collection. Highly recommended. (Paul Clatworthy) Beggar & Co-The Legacy MJB via Expansions Without question Beggar & Co are purveyors of retaining the essence of the musician players association ethos championed by their peers Kool & The Gang, The Blackbyrds, Fatback and Brass Construction. The Legacy pays homage to that in respect of the subtle placement and tones of their vocal chants within the crescendo of jazz funky music. Making Music The Legacy and Mind Over Matter are the funk front runners as well as a revamped Somebody Help Me Out and a cover of War’s Slipping Into Darkness. Check out the journalistic Mizell Bros influenced Walk and the smooth jazzed Carnival. Kenny Baps & Breeze’s 30 year original concept with the help of a few dedicated musicians preserve and continue the legacy we hold in high esteem in 2011. Fitzroy
Soul Togetherness presents The Skip Scarborough Songbook - Expansions Here’s a smidgen of the gifted Skip Scarborough’s discography, a prolific songwriter of his generation. His songs have been covered by many popular soul surviving artists in various tempos and genre styles from ballads to uplifting jazz and soul tempos. Maxi Anderson’s Lover To Lover, The Emotion’s Don’t Ask My Neighbour and LTD’s Love Ballad inclusion are examples of how Skip’s work allowed those interpretations. Amongst the chosen eighteen cuts is EWF’s Earth Wind & Fire, Dionne Warwick’s version of Can’t Hide Love and Phyllis Hyman’s tantalising Living Inside Your Love. Not just a two step ballad writer, we hear his disco vibes on Thelma Houston and Jerry Butlers Let’s Get Together and the belting vocals of Patti Labelle’s It’s Alright with Me. Truly an enticing soul serenading songbook to treasure! Fitzroy Nick Pride & The Pimptones- Midnight Feast Of Jazz Records Kicks This mixture of live retro blue eyed jazz with a touch of psychedelic funk sounds like potential candidates for one of Ginger Tony’s Jump Start comps. Crisp production and tight musicianship is directed by guitarist Nick Pride who wrote and arranged the whole album. It’s mostly instrumental with a few strong vocal deliveries from Zoe Gilby on Lay It On The Line, Jess Roberts on Waiting So Long and Susan Hamilton on Brighter Day. Come And Get It burst the album into the anticipated excitement to come and Midnight Feast Of Jazz transforms from straight ahead jazz into a latin groove and back again, so is perfect for the energetic jazz dancers. This could easily have been mistakenly a Freestyle release but Record Kicks have landed this one. These toons are far from loony and represent like the Maggies in the North East of UK. Fitzroy Omar - Dancing - Tru Thoughts After the success of It’s So from a few years back, Omar has since been consistently experimenting with broken and afro beats. He teams again with Zed Bias for another future carnival anthem Dancing with that Caribbean rhythm and deep sub bass production spawned from the UK drum & bass/UKG era. Funky percussive swinging and perfect for Omar’s vocal delivery you are guaranteed to be dancing like the title suggests. With a flowing toasting vocal from Fox this comes as an instrumental radio original and accapella and an alternative Zed Bias remix of It’s So. June 27th with limited vinyl! Bah Samba - Shake The Dog - Fav Bah Samba have famously worked with many, including the vibe master Roy Ayers, and West London DJ Producer maestro Phil Asher prior to this Shake The Dog CD. It’s full of latin, jazz, afro, live music and collaborations with Monique Bingham, Daddy’s Girl, Phil Asher, Quentin Harris and Ashley Beedle. Tracks 2-5 are all uplifting afro beats with It’s Just Your Love being the most seductive. Personally I’m feeling track 6, Kite Yo Autumn, feat Jephte and Ashley Beedle with it’s earthy dubness and double bass kicking driving rhythm and haunting live horns. Everybody Get Up and Have You Got Your Boots On? borrows the 1980’s happy singalong electro boogie template and interestingly, Pimp feat Princess is an insight of the seedy world that ladies of the night endure, told in spoken word and an eerie production. Nice variety if your mind is eclectic!! Fitzroy Soul Togetherness presents The Spirit Of Philadelphia 3 Expansions The beauty of the Philly sound is that it was spread across various labels outside the PIR camp and here are 17 showcasing that. Tapestry's It’s Not The World That’s Messed Up retains that funky message in the music ethos and kick starts the compilation nicely. Barbara Roy’s unmistakeable vocals on Ecstasy Passion & Pains I Wouldn’t Give You Up comes via the Roulette label. Sharon Paige a feature artist with Harold Melvin sounds delightful on the airy faired and lush New To Me. Sounding more Salsoul than Philly Brown Sugar’s I’m Going Through Changes Now is infectiously sublime. Impact’s I Thought You Would Like To Know typifies the way good vocals ride a Philly good groove whilst an early harmonious Sister Sledge ballad Thank You For Today melts hearts like the sun does ice. Can’t go wrong investing in this!! Fitzroy Leon Haywood - Consider The Source - Get On Down A few years before his disco smash Don't Push It Don’t Force It, Leon was making even more blatant innuendoes on this classic 1975 21st Century label album. Oozing sensuality and sung in a softer smoothness than label mate Barry White, it carries the original version of This Feelings Rated Extra excellently covered a few years later by Carl “Bad Mama Jama” Carlton. With strings orchestrated by the magnificent Gene Page, listen to the inspiration for Dr Dre’s sampling of I Wanna Do Something Freaky To You for Nuthin’ But A G Thing. Completely and erotically rude it truly is an amazing piece of metaphoric soul history. Clearly inspired by The Isley’s, Al Green and The Staple Singers check out Who You Been Giving It Up To Just Your Fool and believe Half Of What You See. Wonderful strings and things!! Fitzroy
Josh Osho ft Ghostface killah - Redemption Days(Island) It’s a pleasure to review this one as Josh is the son of a strong gifted soul brutha I’ve known and worked with on occasions for 20 years. Deep routed in his African culture and struggling as a teenage youth escaping the everyday issues on the inner city blues streets, Josh found his redemption in writing songs and music. Featuring Wu Tangs Ghostface Killah rap, RZA’s production has a simple head nod hip hop beat with Josh’s raw vocals bellowing over. But I believe with a nice mature soul groove underneath it would fly like Virgin Airways. Fitzroy Seven Heven - BBB This 21st century jazz funk and soul comp was woven by Webbo aka Mark Webster, a 20th century club radio journalist, TV presenter and music encyclopedic boffin. Amongst the 20 diverse tracks are at least 6 covers given the millennium revamp. They are Hypnotic Brass Ensemble - Brass In Africa (Shaft In Africa) Sunlight Square’s - I Believe In Miracles, Soopasoul’s - It’s Just Begun, Filthy Six’s - Get Carter, Kova & Miles(Meter’s cover )-Clap Clap and Speedometers funky JB reincarnation of Eddie Bo’s Lover & A Friend. In the popular jazz dance vein the stylish Milano Jazz Dance Combo Much More and Samba Madness by DJ Graham B are here for the light and fast footed hoofers. The classic Philly produced Ron Hall & The Muthafunker’s The Way You Love Me adds another twist as does Loretta Heywood’s broken styled Little Angel. There’s a few more variety surprises but you’ll have to purchase this to get them. Fitzroy 94 East feat Prince-The Cookhouse Five Original 1975 session-Reo Deo It’s amazing what gems can be preserved from yesteryear and to whom were involved before their prominent rise to fame. From the twin city of Minneapolis, 94 East, fronted by an influential Pepe Willie, these sweet recordings showcase the innate talent of a 1617 year old Prince Nelson aka Prince. Personally I found 94 East’s sound soulful with a touch of jazziness and beauty that typifies the vast amount of buried treasures undiscovered by the masses. Pepe’s voice is definitive and smooth and amiably supported by Marcy Ingvolstad and Kristie Lazenberry’s harmonious BV’s. Listen to the four diverse mid tempo If We Don’t, If You See Me, I’ll Always Love You and Games and the ballad Better Than You Think, to hear the wanderlust and creativeness that till now has been slept on. Prince’s flare for the guitar is so evident amongst the musical talent on here, so I declare this great unearthed discovery!! Fitzroy 24 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk
John Morales - The M&M MIxes Vol 2 -BBE BBE release the 2nd M&M Mixes Vol 2 from the humble mix king John Morales. These unreleased mixes have a few surprises including two renowned street funk hustlers Brass Construction’s Now Is Tomorrow and an elongated version of War’s Slipping Into Darkness. There are 3 Inner Life feat Jocelyn Brown’s on here including Make It Last Forever and an interesting and percussive breakdown of Candy Staton’s Young Hearts Run Free. Whilst in the albums promotional stage the loss Salsouls first lady of Loletta Holloway gives more credibility to John’s improvised mix Of Dreaming with never released before vocal parts. Naturally there are some Burgess projects with Aleem and Logg on here and Gary Criss’s picturesque Rio De Janeiro. Another midas touch is John’s mix of Teddy P’s The More I Get and First Choices The Player. Essential listening!! Fitzroy Freddie Lee - Searching single from forthcoming Soul Intentions (Butterfly) Here comes the hurricane from the American south blowing in with some sassy swing soul via his new single Searching. Freddie has increased his profile somewhat since we interviewed him in issue 22. He’s appeared on Channel 4‘s T4 as dj Freddie Murphy as well as doing countless live dates around the country. This mixture of gospel soul with a jazzy production is catchy, melodic and sung with compassion in his search to find that perfect love. Currently getting a lot of airplay, you may find you can’t help toe tapping to this soul searching piece - just one from his forthcoming Soul Intentions album...nice one Fab Five Freddie!! Fitzroy Beverley Knight Soul UK - Hurricane Records Bringing back the “Flavour of the Old School”, like her mid 90’s UK swing beat debut, Beverley Knight MBE pays homage to some 20th century UK soul, adding her 21st century revamps of cuts she found inspirational before or during her arrival on the music world. Here are 6 from her forthcoming Soul UK CD due in the summer covering artists including Soul To Soul, Jamiroquai, Young Disciples, Junior Giscombe, Lewis Taylor and George Michael. Soul To Soul’s Fairplay gets a modest and funky treatment with a few lyric changes whilst Jamiroquai’s When You Gonna Learn is slower and jazzier than the original but with the twists and turns that Beverley’s voice is amiably capable of. YD’s Apparently Nothing gets a low down funky treatment with Roots Manuva’s poignant 2011 sign of the times rap adding new dimensions. Junior’s Mama Used To Say is one of the most commercial crossover hits and yet surprisingly given the most versatile and subtle updated mix of all on this sampler. Lewis Taylor’s Damn is given that smooth almost acoustic lazy and jazzy soul twist with great harmonies. Not being too familiar with George Michael’s One More Try, I can only imagine Beverley’s almost Aretha Franklyn gospel delivery befits the original respectfully. With plenty more on the CD Beverley certainly enjoyed reminding us UK Soul Surviving Lovers of our musical heritage and well worth investing in!! Fitzroy

A AN RI AD Like the Michael Douglas and Karl Malden 70‘s TV cop show, you come from The Streets Of San Francisco around the bay area which famously nurtured teenage soulja bruthaz The Black Panthers and music icons Sly & The Family Stone and Lenny Williams. Apart from your legendary Mother, who were your influences? My Mother is a jazz singer so she introduced me to an eclectic mix of great jazz singers like Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne and Andy Bey. I liked the soul singers that my older cousins would play, like Natalie Cole, Gladys Knight and Minnie Ripperton. I like a lot of Brazilian music like Djavan and Bennini. My Mum sang with Dizzy Gillespie and came back from Brazil with a lot of the music and my Dad is Afro Cuban, so there was this potpourri of different sounds that stimulated me at a very early age. Were you into Airto and Flora Purim as well? Yes and what’s interesting about the Brazilian singers is that they are so key to melody. They have the genius of simply singing the melody straight. Brazilian melodies are so beautiful that you don’t have to do a lot and their voices just fly naturally. I love Alice Regine and Maria Bethinia and I had the fortune of living in Bahia Brazil for a couple of years when I left Loud Records. I have such a respect for their musicianship as they live eat and drink music because it’s everywhere. Your Mother, Mary Stallings, a more refined straight ahead jazz vocalist that I liken to Nina Simone, worked with Count Basie, Cannon Ball Adderley, Dizzy Gillespie and your Godfather Pharoah Sanders. With your Father coming from the Afro Cuban culture, you were predestined to become the 21st Nubian queen of jazz hip hop soul singer we respect today. Having met rapper producer Dred Scott, how did your relationship flourish and you end up singing on his 1993 anthem Check The Vibe? Wow thank you for the title. Dred and I met in college and he was doing the underground hip hop thing and I was one 26 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk
of the kids with the back pack, Adidas sneakers and the Black Moon tape. We had that mutual love for hip hop and he had a similar musical background to me. His mom was a dancer and his father an opera singer, so we clicked as kids of performers. Our thing kinda happened organically as kids just having fun singing and rhyming. Around the time your debut dropped in 1997 the UK were already on the back end of our mid 80’s rare groove epidemic and were entering our 10th year of making our organic brand of jazz soul and funk. After the Acid Jazz period multi-instrumentalists like Don E and Omar had and lost major deals and were independent acts on occasion major labels. It appeared that the Americans caught in R&B swing and rap were returning with new soul from around 1992-1996 via Mary J Blige, Maxwell and D”Angelo. I happen to know you respect the underground black UK soul movement and that is important for us here to hear from an American. How much did you know about what we were doing here? I loved Loose Ends and when I heard the Brand New Heavies Brother Sister, that song changed my life because being over here during that period I had checked out of RnB. I didn’t like it and was really into hip hop and loved the way that music sampled the cool rare groove records. I’d listen to Soul 2 Soul and the Brand New Heavies and think “damn why are we not having this over here?” (We both lol) Back in the mid 90’s everything was super electronic and drum machines and this corny synthetic music but I loved listening to artists like Marvin Gaye and here we weren't getting that. RnB had really dropped off but we were getting dribs and drabs of what was coming out of the UK. I was so involved with that underground hip hop scene and the British soul music was a part of that here so we got exposed to the rare groove and acid jazz stuff. It wasn’t getting major play on the radio with things you heard like Jodeci on the radio so it was considered underground and in the clubs you’d hear James Brown, BNH and then...Wu Tang!

“Well that wasn’t dull...” A lot’s happened since the last edition of Soul Survivors. We’ve been everywhere from Germany to Leicester and bumped into everyone from Marc Evans to Darth Vader (seriously). The one thing the last few months have not been is boring. The summer has a lot to live up to... Whilst “The Village” (with myself alongside Phil Levene & Ed Stokes) continues to deliver the goods at East Village, EC2, “Feel Soul” will be making a welcome return on the last Saturday of every month at Rendezvous, Chadwell Heath, Essex. Kicking off July (Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd) is the EMS Summer Soul Weekender at The Ramada Birmingham Oldbury Hotel with DJs: Colin Curtis, Chris Bangs, Mark Randle, Gavin Page, myself & many, many more. All profits will be going to MacMillan Cancer Support. Then a quick dash down to Kent for the Margate Jazz Festival, where on Sunday 3rd July Solar Radio’s James Anthony and little old me (again.lol) will be hosting the day’s events at The Old Town Piazza. Entry for this is FREE!!! Feel free to contact me directly for any more info etc. “Now back to the studio...” I’ll do my best not to dress this up as anything other than me listing my bestest (now I know that’s not a proper word) albums of the moment. Hawa’s “My Little Green Bag” is yet another example of Favourite Records leading the way for all things cool. Hawa’s influences cover the complete spectrum from Soul and Jazz to Folk and Gospel, they’re all here on her debut album produced by the everwonderful Patchworks. If you’ve not yet grabbed a copy of Nick Pride & The Pimptones “Midnight Feast Of Jazz” (out now on Recordkicks) then I really need to ask why??? Many, many standout moments but I still have to take a cold shower after hearing Zoe Gilby’s vocals on the extremely sexy “Lay It On The Line”.
Mo’Horizons have timed their return to perfection. “Mo’Horizons & The Banana Soundsystem” is truly a festival of Latin beats and grooves and I’ve got to give you advance warning that if you’re a fan of the mundane, safe & predictable you’re gonna hate this! There’s so much creative, exciting fun over these 13 tracks I thought I might explode! Fan-flipping-tatstic!!! Following on from last time’s recommendations, don’t forget your copy of Smoove +Turrell’s “Eccentric Audio” on Jalapeno Records. Listeners to the “Jump Start” will already know why... ;-) “Listenable... (part 2)” Yes I realise I’m banging on about “Jump Start Music vol.2 “again, but I really wanted to share my Dad’s review of my 2nd compilation with you all. “I played it last week and liked it.” Thanks Dad! Event reviews/letters Move On Up @ The Greyhound, Streatham This was my first visit to Stevie Dundee and Tony Rodriguezs' night in South West London and it was the visit of music maestro Erik Rico that drew my attention to this now well established night. I was never familiar with Mr Rico's music but after watching his performance I was won over and will be parting with some sheckles and buying his stuff. There was also a PA from an up and coming talent, Ayisha Renee, who performed her new single Mind Your Business admirably. The Greyhound is a spacious high ceiling pub venue with a good dance floor and beer on tap (hoorah!), and this night goes on until 3:30am and is a snip to get into. A friendly crowd and a good sound system top this night off nicely. Darrell S Organic Soul @ Veranda Bar, Brixton This is a new night for South London, and hosted by the Need A Place To Go and TSOL radio crews. It's a night of Classic R'n'B, Soul, Rare Groove and a touch of Reggae and it's in a very plush setting, namely The Veranda Bar in Brixton. I went to this night on my own and, as it is sometimes, I was a little bit nervous as I didn't know anybody at this event. Oh how wrong I was. This is a very friendly crowd of party people that dance and smile a lot. Musically it does what it says on the tin, classic R'n'B and Soul played by DJ's Pete Mello, Reggie Stiles and Jerry Bascombe. Veranda is a stylish place with murals and pictures adorning the bar and walls. The sound system is good but could probably do with a bit of a tweek but all in all that is the only thing that could be said about this night. Oh that and the fact that some of London's beautiful women all seemed to be in Veranda on this night. Hat’s off to Jerry Bascombe for an excellent night. Darrell S Dexter Wansel at the Southport weekender, May 2011, was widely anticipated, with the Connoisseurs Corner packed by 3pm. Those lucky early arrivals had been entertained by Terry Jones and Andy Davies since 1pm to their usual classic DJ set and then a PA from Marilyn Ashford Brown. Dexter Wansel appeared on stage an hour earlier than scheduled, supported by his “Philly Sounds” backing group and that is exactly what he provided, a repertoire straight from TSOP. Starting his set with the initial haunting keyboard introduction of Life on Mars, it was clear that he and his band were there to party. They followed with “Love Train”, “Aint No Stoppin Us Now”, “Sweetest Pain” with Marilyn Ashford Brown taking vocals. At this point there were tears in the eyes of many in the room and that was just the men. Looking round the Connoisseurs Corner was now rammed, with the doormen sadly not allowing any more people in the room.
The set was finished by “Nights Over Egypt”, “Love TKO” and “Disco Inferno” for which Al Johnson came on stage for lead vocals. Dexter Wansel by then was emotionally and musically drained. It was lovely to see a humble musician in awe of the 32 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk
crowd, who were equally in awe of a master craftsman. During the Al Johnson set I had to explain to both Anna and Fitzroy that they had missed not just Dexter Wansel, but probably the best live performance that I and many others have ever seen at a weekender. Mark Collison Southport Weekender at Minehead! The Good Timmy Regisfords slamming after party session! Proper Shelter style vibes. Loads of driving Regisford/Rios beats and dubs interspersed with overlayed original soul/RnB vocals and acapellas. Hands in the air and massive cheers for almost every mix dropped ALL NIGHT LONG - easily one of the weekends major highlights. Motor City Drum Ensemble - superb selection, great technique mixing across all styles... House, Disco, Funk, Boogie, Acid, techno... the lot!! Another big big fav of the wknd for me. Benji B - Another great set from Benji - not much more to say really... reliable as ever. Gilles Peterson - he lost it towards the end for me but for 45 mins had the crowd in his hands. Played Kinks E79 (my fav House tune from last year) so was obviously well happy with that! Kev Beadle - covered what should have been a peak time Joy Orbison set (who played a fairly decent set Friday night instead) and went down a storm! Kev's a good mate so I'm biased but he’s rarely played a bad set in 30 years for me. Stu Patterson - proper connoisseurs selection! He was up against stiff competition with Theo and Sanchez and was in the smelly "no-go" room but despite some technical issues (broken deck) soldiered on and recovered to fill the floor - no problem at all! :0) Lenny Williams Gotta Lotta Luv and Nature Zone's Porcupine were big for me. Rahaan again... impeccable selections and glorious disco boogie edits galore! Didn't think you could improve on Mass Production's Cosmic Lust! Perfect warm up for Timmy's real deal after party session! Live Acts - Saadiq, Wansal, N'Dambi were all superb. Rasmus Faber was surprisingly good but the Soulphuric latin house sounds a bit dated now. I'm done with S.O.B to be honest but for anyone who's not seen them (although I'd imagine most Southport goers have now?) they're still a perfect Sunday afternoon finalé.
The Bad Theo, Karizma, Spen - generally OK with selections but leave the knobs alone. The Ugly Roger Sanchez - never been a fan to be honest - but he was
awful... truly awful. Wedding/predictable mastercuts Hed-Kandi - best of overplayed house set. I only stayed for a short while but those that persevered were all saying how bad he really was. Missed for one reason or another: Rodigan, Spinna, Avery Sunshine, Rub n Tug, Todd Terje. In general I had a good time, caught up with loads of old friends and enjoyed some good sessions. DJ AKA (Mucho Soul) Baltic Soul Weekender - 5 April 2011 Believe it or not the BSW had remained under the radar to me until NOW! Set up at an existing holiday venue in Northern Germany, it follows the time honoured tradition of a number of musical venues and djs playing all your soulful music. However, what makes a difference is the BSW 15 piece Orchestra, which graced the massive sound stage of the main venue, with various live acts ranging from The Trammps to Eli Paperboy Reed to Gwen McCrae and others. In all over a dozen live acts which graced the various venues on site. For me the great vocals of Marc Evans stood out above all others, a fantastic experience. Accommodation was more than adequate and serviced by a great supermarket and bakery as well as a number of restaurants serving great food at very reasonable rates. It has by leaps and bounds ticked more boxes than any other similar outings for me. I was also impressed by the number of Brits who make the journey for this event and had the pleasure of meeting old and new friends alike. So impressed was I by its total experience that I've booked for next April. Peter Ralph Atlanta Soul & Gospel: Avery Sunshine, Heston & Monique Thomas. The Drum, Birmingham. Sunshine. Everybody loves the Sunshine. That was certainly true on Saturday night at The Drum in Birmingham. The room was HOT. The night started with local singer/songwriter Monique Thomas. WOW. This lady had the most amazing voice. Clear, crisp, intonation; rich vocal tones, and the confidence of a professional. With a newly released album – “Unbroken”, and her single “Colourful”; on rotation on Roger Williams’ Soulsorts on Solar Radio – Monique Thomas is one to watch. Check out her website: http://moniquelawson.com/ Now Heston (calm yourself ladies) – could be compared to the likes of Maxwell etc, with his sensual, seductive ballads and funky up-tempo tracks. But his unique vocal style and natural raspiness make him stand out from the crowd. The Dominican-born singer, with his second album “Warm Human Cold World” (Dome Records), captured the audience with his laid back Atlanta soul. Caressing his guitar like it was his baby. A cover of Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song” had the crowd swinging, and Heston’s vocal tone was not too dissimilar to Mr Marley himself. A very tight acoustic set, in a laid back atmosphere, was definitely the calm before the storm. Which brings me to the Sunshine. Walking on the stage singing “I’ve Got Sunshine”, immediately requesting audience participation, Avery Sunshine commands attention with her presence, and she gets it. The audience are putty in her hands.
She has the gospel power, but also, sweet subtle tones. Sitting at her keyboard, very laid back kind of style. Think Jill Scott and Ledisi. With a funky cover of Jill Scott’s “He Loves Me”, D’Angelo’s “Lady”, Gladys Knight’s “Midnight Train To Georgia” and Anita Baker’s “Sweet Love”; peppered within her own material throughout the set (“Like This”, “Pinin” ,”All In My Head”; being a favourite of mine), – the night felt like an impromptu jam session, especially when Michael Grant from Musical Youth was called up from the audience, and was embarrassed into a mini duet of Pass the Dutchie! Avery Sunshine is an incredible singer/songwriter. She tells the story with her facial expressions and warms to the audience immediately. If you get the chance – go and see for yourself. You just can’t help loving the sunshine. Bettina Bernard, Birmingham We Love Soul @ Hidden, Vauxhall 24 April & 1 May 2011 The first two of three Bank Holiday trilogies, both went successfully to plan with all three, the Party, Jazz Funk Boogie and House Rooms busy with people partying hard like Doneao till 7am. Guest PA’s included Noel McKoy performing Family & Lucky Fellow and Omar with There’s Nothing Like This and It’s So. People travel from London, surrounding counties and as far and wide as Manchester, so look out for 16th July and the next Bank holiday 28th August. Fitzroy The Whispers @ Indigo2 14th May 2011 The Whispers were due to perform in London 2 years ago but was disappointedly cancelled, so now we got to see them perform in the tradition they have for over 47 years. They performed some very lush ballads and their popular and familiar classics, And the Beat Goes On, Its A Love Thing, Lets Go All The Way and Olivia (Lost & Turned Out) to my delight. They were polished with the old school stylish dance routines that befit the trademarks of how artists could choreograph dance and sing like in the Motown era. The busy audience were respectful and appreciative of such a professional performance and stayed for the after party, being entertained by Bobby & Steve (Zoo), James Anthony and Rudy Ranx. Soul In The Algarve 6, Portugal 28 April - 5 May 2011 After last year’s roller coaster experience due to the volcano, it was a challenge to at least equal an event running into it’s 6th year. 420 people from around the UK and Europe descended upon the Algarve for a week of sun, fun and bad boy music. After being greeted with Sangria and being shown to the luxury apartments and on site accommodation, it was time to Get Loose like Aleem. The fancy dress themes were based around the event of the Royal Wedding so smart dress or Kings and Queen’s outfits were the criteria. There were some amazing efforts made by all, as was there for the infamous white night and the open choice saw vicars, nuns, army fatigue and officers and gentlemen guises. The afternoon jazz and soul sessions, as always, go down a treat, as did the exercise on the beach and the zumba class sessions. The football tournament was the most competitive yet, with the Algarve dj all-stars competing with the local restaurants and winners of the five-a-side team in the Final. The music was consistently firing on all cylinders with residents Vivy B, Tony Rodriguez, Darrell S and new kid on the block Rudi Ranx and guests. The all day lounging by the designer beach pool area with cocktails, good weather, music and happy feeling like Maze was equalled by the infamous quiz night that followed. Always a highlight, and shows the camaraderie between the holiday revelers and the SITA staff. The final night was amazing with many staying till 8am to see the sunset in by partying on the beach and dancing in the sea. Next year the dates have been moved to May so there is plenty of time to save up and lay down your deposit. Half the people rebooked before they returned to the UK! Fitzroy
Dwele at The Jazz Cafe Monday 11 April 2011 Detroit based Dwele was tonight performing the last of an impressive four night sell out at the Jazz Cafe. Performing a discography of all his albums including some tracks from his first group Slum Village, this musical genius did not disappoint. Dwele formed an instant rapport and great interaction with his audience, particularly with his good guy/bad guy chat up lines and jokes. Dwele also paid tribute to the sad passing of Nate Dogg and performed a personal tribute to him and sang a Marvin Gaye song, as he was one of his biggest musical influences. There was also a rendition of Maze's 'Joy and Pain' which had the audience singing that well known and loved chorus. I would recommend you see Dwele next time he tours as he brings his strong musical multifaceted talent to the stage from start to finish. 34 www.thesoulsurvivors.co.uk
Indigo2 Friday 15th April 30 years Of Brit Funk Celebrating 30 years of Brit Funk, the Indigo2 were presenting an amazing six acts encompassing some of the very best artists that have emerged from this bygone era. Junior started proceedings performing just a few of his hits, which naturally included his biggest to date 'Mama used to say' and seemed proud to be part of this special evening. Hi Tension’s David Joseph followed and performed 'Joys of life' and 'You can't hide from love'. It seemed as if a long time had emerged since he had last performed live, as vocally he was disappointing. Central Line then took us through their many hits including their first hit 'You Know You Can Do It'. They finished the set with their chart hit 'Walking into Sunshine' which had the whole crowd remembering the words and singing along. Leee John from Imagination came on stage looking very dapper in an eye catching suit. Leee's performance was one of the best of the evening as you couldn't fail to see his love for performing and entertaining. Sounding strong vocally, he sang many of Imagination's hit songs, including 'Music and Lights' and 'Just an Illusion', and was applauded by everyone. Second Image performed many of their hits including 'Don't You', 'Can't Keep Holding On' and 'Special Lady' sounded as good as it did 30 years ago. Billed as Beggar and Co, many of the musicians were also in Light of the World and performed hits from both bands, including the evergreen 'Swinging', which made you appreciate the tight horn section that has always been present in both bands. Noel McKoy assisted with vocals on 'I'm So Happy', sung with real feeling and emotion. Leaving us with the anthem 'Somebody Help Me Out' - we were being transported back to that special time where we would all sing along to this chorus.
Conya Doss at the Jazz Cafe - Saturday 16 April 2011 Conya Doss was making a return to this venue after a six year absence for two shows which were both sellouts. Soul Survivors Fitzroy Da Buzzboy keeping the sweet sounds flowing with his musical choices between the sets. With two support acts, Bashiyra 'The Voice' started the evening off with tracks from her two albums to date, looking good and sounding confident I'm sure it won't be long till she is the main act you will be going to see.
Canada's Jeff Hendrick was next, the accomplished singer/songwriter featured songs from all three albums and found many new fans amongst the audience, showing what a great voice and how accomplished he is as a saxophonist, marrying the two together effortlessly. Conya Doss came on stage to a rapturous applause from her loyal fans when 'What We Gone Do' got the crowd in the zone to hear more from the five albums Conya’s recorded. 'Come Over' 'Missing You' and 'Coffee' were performed with Conya's real passion and genuine enthusiasm for music. The very topical 'Wi Fi' from her current album 'Blu Transition' had the audience singing along and she involved the audience in a competition to win a CD if you could sing any of her songs. Two ladies rose to the challenge with faultless renditions which left Conya wondering if she could add to her already strong line up of backing singers! Conya left us with her rendition of Norman Connors 'Starship', a perfect song to end a really entertaining and enjoyable evening. Miss Sparkle Sundays 7-9pm on Stomp Radio Southport (Minehead) 47 6500 black music enthusiasts travelled from around the world to the new spacious Butlin’s site with upgraded accommoda-
tion and larger venue rooms compared to the old Pontin’s residency. Friday nights highlights included Raphael Saadiq with his eclectic soul show and David Rodigan who packed out the new Funkbase to capacity creating an atmosphere that took Anna of Soul Survivors’ breath away. After missing Dexter Wansal and Al Johnson, due to the time change, we made sure we saw N’Dambi. She put on an energetic show performing I Can’t Hardly Wait and my fave Daydreamer. We later managed to catch Steve Wren’s perfect prelude set before Grandmaster Flash took the wheels of steels and spun the Funkbase into a frenzy for an hour and a half of old school rap, hip hop and a touch of glam rock. On Sunday we went to the Powerhouse where Phil Asher played a mixture of House and soothing soul before the real Sunday sermon began with the mighty force of Sounds Of Blackness. Naturally they performed The Pressure, Black Butterfly, I’m Going All The Way and Optimistic, but for me it was all about the song The Drum, deep, spiritual and inspiring. The new venue is so much bigger with much more to offer as the weekender settles into it’s new home. Lots of old faces and devoted diehards will have lots to talk about and look forward to next year. The usual record and T shirt stands and familiar dj’s were loyally there in support of Alex and Dave’s vision of extending the weekenders’ legacy. Their hard work is to be commended, as unless you run an event of that magnitude you have no idea what it takes with lastmin.com hiccups, to put things together. Although I had a banging headache for most of it I still had a good weekend though like many I’m still recovering!! Fitzroy
