Concert Season 2016 - 2017

Welcome to The Sixteen’s 2016 – 2017 Season Our fruitful relationships and residencies continue with London’s Wigmore Hall and Kings Place and Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall, exploring the music of Buxtehude and Purcell, as well as the Golden Age of Portugal. The Choral Pilgrimage is of course central to The Sixteen’s season and I am thrilled and indeed humbled that audiences have found such great pleasure and solace in this year’s programme of William Byrd and Arvo Pärt. The focus of next year’s Choral Pilgrimage will be on Palestrina and Poulenc, including Poulenc’s evocative and soul-searching setting of Un soir de neige reflecting the sentiments of occupied France during World War II. We have had great enjoyment over the past two seasons touring Monteverdi’s Vespers and Handel’s Dixit Dominus, and once again our inspirational period-instrument orchestra will be joining the choir for a UK tour in February of an all-Bach programme centred around his exuberant Magnificat.

In November and December, we will be returning to Austria and Spain with Handel’s Messiah, welcoming back Carolyn Sampson as a soloist performing in front of the group with whom she spent many of her formative years.

I look forward to seeing you during the season either at home or abroad. Do spread the word and if you are new to us, do come and say hello.

After a gap of some seven years, we will be making a long-overdue appearance at the BBC Proms. The Sixteen will be joined by 16 Genesis Sixteen alumni (how I like that number!) to savour works by Bach and Pärt. But the undoubted highlight of our season has to be the world premiere in London’s Barbican Hall of Sir James MacMillan’s Stabat Mater. We have had a long and quite wonderful association not only with James but also with John Studzinski and the Genesis Foundation who commissioned this monumental work. I am especially excited to be conducting Britten Sinfonia who will be joining us for this project.

These performances are well@TheSixteen nigh flawless. The subtlety, the range, the juxtapositions of timbre are mesmerising.’ Bachtrack ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 3

The Choral Pilgrimage 2017 The 2017 tour centres around the themes of conflict and atonement. Palestrina’s mass based around the famous L’Homme Armé tune was immensely popular in the 16th century and its warlike nature serves as a timely reminder of the savagery of conflict, something which deeply affected Poulenc. Poulenc’s Un soir de neige, composed in December 1944, reflects both the inner feeling of peace generated by Christmas and the bleak solitude of another winter of occupation in France. James MacMillan Stabat Mater The Sixteen gives the world premiere of James MacMillan’s Stabat Mater, surrounded and illuminated by music from some of Britain’s greatest composers. Few living composers communicate with the emotional directness of Sir James MacMillan, and performances of his new Stabat Mater are eagerly anticipated. For him, ‘beauty is at the heart of our Christian faith’ and this piece is sure to be profoundly shaped by his beliefs. But this is a work with deep roots and a universal message, a celebration of both tradition and radical renewal. The Sixteen Britten Sinfonia Scottish Chamber Orchestra (23 & 24 March only) Harry Christophers conductor

This dynamic programme of Italian and Portuguese Baroque music for choir and three instrumentalists is at times reflective, at times uplifting and always inspired. Rebelo’s sumptuous setting of Panis Angelicus is almost opulent while Melgas’ Lamentations are prayerful and imbued with a sense of hope. There is no doubt, however, that the tour de force is Scarlatti’s virtuosic setting of the Stabat Mater. Wigmore Hall allows you to go deep into the continuo colours, and it’s just the perfect place for the human voice.’ Harry Christophers

14 January 2017, 11am The Fairy Queen for Families

20 February 2017, 7.30pm Buxtehude Membra Jesu Nostri

Join puppetry and physical theatre group, Box Tale Soup, and members of The Sixteen for a new family adaptation of Shakespeare’s enchanting A Midsummer Night’s Dream with two actors, two singers, a guitarist and a cast of beautiful handmade puppets.

For some people, the cyclic title of these cantatas by Buxtehude might conjure up a rather morbid picture. However, this meditation on the Passion, in which each of the seven cantatas contemplates parts of Christ’s body on the cross (feet, knees, hands, side, breast, heart and head), is full of beauty, hope and invention.

Be transported to a world of magic and mishap where Shakespeare’s language remains intact and is made accessible to a younger audience through the use of innovative theatre and live musical excerpts from Henry Purcell’s The Fairy Queen.

This concert will feature a small consort of singers and instrumentalists. The Sixteen Fretwork Harry Christophers conductor

15 November 2016, 7pm Handel Acis & Galatea Temple Church, London

13 May 2017, 3pm Poetry in Music St Mary’s Church, Painswick

The Arundel Choirbook was created in 1525 and is one of few part-books to have survived the Reformation. It reveals a wealth of extraordinary music including pieces by Ludford, Fayrfax and Sheppard.

Handel’s pastoral opera is a tale of tragedy, eternal love and liberation, telling the story of the mortal Acis, the goddess Galatea and their love doomed by the cyclops Polyphemus. It was the first full-scale work that Handel set to an English language text and he would only have had a small number of singers and musicians at his disposal.

Explore the intimate relationship between poetry and music in a programme of a cappella English works from across the centuries. Enjoy powerful settings of works by writers as varied as Edmund Spenser, Christopher Fry and W. H. Auden.

Harry Christophers will stay true to the opera’s premiere performance in 1718, using a small group of five singers and nine instrumentalists.

Forthcoming Releases Edmund Rubbra September 2016 Release COR16144 The distinctive style of 20th-century composer Edmund Rubbra’s music is unmistakable – his love of counterpoint, his sense of tonality, and his clever working of melody make him stand out from many of his contemporaries. In this beautiful new recording The Sixteen explores some of his little-known choral music, including the extraordinary Tenebrae Nocturnes and the Missa Cantuariensis with its fabulous double-choir writing.

Now entering its sixth year, Genesis Sixteen is a unique free training opportunity for talented young ensemble singers hoping to progress from student to professional. During the year-long scheme singers receive group tuition from conductor Harry Christophers CBE and associate conductor Eamonn Dougan, individual mentoring from members of The Sixteen and masterclasses run by some of the industry’s top vocal experts. The programme also recently developed a Conducting Scholarship, supporting graduate conductors in the early stages of their careers. Thanks to a close partnership with the Genesis Foundation participants not only receive free tuition but also a bursary to cover all additional costs.
