MAN SIZZLES.....! Well, i was checking out magazines on the stand when i saw the premiere issue of MAN and absolutely had to have it. It’s unanimous, AZIM JAMAL is hot. I loved getting to know more about him. I really like his perspective on life. I read the magazine from cover to cover and am still re-reading it. I just have one concern is it possible to include some name of shops where a trendy, cosmopolitan man can get some good quality clothes and leather shoes? Otherwise, I would like to tell my fellow men to forget about the girlymagazines as MAN is the magazine for us. Keep it up the good work. Michaelmas Michaelmas, We are glad you enjoyed the first issue and believe you will continue to be a regular reader. We have taken into account your main points, as we forge ahead, you won’t be disappointed! Enjoy this issue!

Gadget Review

2010s’ must have

Gadgets Dual Touch Screen Laptop:

We’ve already witnessed top-notch laptops with touch screens. But what about dual touch screens? Apparently, the Italian firm V12 Designs will launch its new version of Canova, a dual LCD laptop. This time, both will be touch screens.

4G Phones.

The real download speed of most 3G phones is not more than 384 Kbps, and sometimes a lot less. That’s because it might have a 3 Mbps announced download speed, but the real one is a lot less. The 4G phones promise data transfers of 100 Mbps, and could reach up to 1 gigabit per second when static. That could mean downloading a full length DVD movie in about a minute.

XBox:

Ever heard of Project Natal? If you spend more than half an hour on the Web a day, you probably have. Otherwise, please first check out this YouTube video. Impressed? Well, after Nintendo’s Wii, Microsoft had to do something about its own console. And since the Wii was such a big hit, this one has to be bigger. Project Natal will definitely score some big points for the Redmond company.

Hydrogen Rulz!

Hydrogen powered phones might be the next big thing. French researchers will probably announce by next year that a hydrogen fuel could be used as backup power source for mobile communications, letting users have some independence from electricity supplies to charge up their phones.

Ford’s MyKeety:

If you give your car to your kids frequently, you might find that it sometimes gets hard to sleep well when they’re out, as you’re worried about what could happen to them. That’s why next year Ford’s releasing MyKey, which uses a chip in the car’s ignition key so that the driver cannot exceed 80 mph. It can also be programmed to limit the car’s audio levels and to sound loud alerts if the driver’s not wearing a seatbelt. MAN Feb -March, 2010

Feature

By Tina Chacha

Valentine is here! The unofficial month of love is here! Shades of red, pink and crimson are ingrained in the minds of women, the excitement leaves them chattering like magpies. Men folk just have to watch in awe as their women go into a charade of love sick mode that they have no clue about but to which they are expected to provide suitable remedies to.

St. Valentine’s Day, a western concept, which we have earnestly embraced with gusto and has permeated our systems to a point of almost endowing it a Public Holiday status. Thanks to our media, advertisers and shrewd business people, materialistic expectations during the

occasion are high and bounding. Women’s expectations for fancy gifts escalate; it’s no surprise that men squirm with apprehension as the day approaches. Strategic businesses make a kill. This is the one day in the year that women expect their men to style up; out of their masculine impoliteness and African mannerism and treat them like special queens. The women are simply saying: “We spend so much time taking care of everyone else’s needs. Valentine’s Day is the one day where we know it’s just about us”. Plus, the real world is romancestarved; even basic common courtesy and chivalry can seem like endangered species in modern society. Unlike men who are taught that the world is harsh, many women folks love life is fed on expectations that match fairytale standards leading them to believe that there are princes out there ready and willing to treat them like princesses. However, most men aren’t exactly riding around on white horses ready to sweep women off their feet — even if they have already put a ring on their fingers. So on this day Women are ready to forget the bad times and focus on the gift of loving. The origin of Valentine’s Day is quite unclear but thanks to the internet I discovered there are at least 8 theories about the day. Interestingly three of them resulted

8

MAN Feb -March, 2010

MAN MAGAZINE LAYOUT.indd 8

in the death of the men-which should tell u something-. Thus Valentines is a day that men stare death in the eye as the expectations of women escalates. Woe unto the man that does not at least make effort to include flowers, wine,

dinner, chocolates or any valentine gift part of his February 14th expenditure. A friend confessed to me that it around this time that he looks for an excuse to break up with his girlfriend just to avoid all the pressure that Valentine’s day puts on him only to reconcile after the day. That is just crude, Valentines does not have to be such a bad ordeal, all you need to do is understand a womans mind during this time. For those with women in your life, chins up! It’s time for a head-count, there is no escaping this day. There are some things about this day that women consider to be the ‘Law of St Valentine’s Day’. First of all, this is a public outcry to ye forgetful and busy men; Valentine’s day is on the 14th of February. Not a day earlier or after and definitely not a month later. This day is programmed into every woman’s head as a day to expect some special treatment so it cannot be substituted with any other day. Just like you didn’t wake up and head to work on Nyerere Day, you cannot forget this day too, don’t conjure up any excuses on Valentine’s day, it just might dig up ugly wounds best

forgotten. If you did not know then please note that Valentine’s Day is every woman right to be loved and appreciated. I am sorry; we may not accept the post Valentine gift. Save, borrow or beg, we don’t care, just make it special.

the weather. She may smile when you give her the plastic flower but trust me she is so sorely disappointed with you inside!

Secondly, it is on this day that we get to gloat to our girlfriends about how special our men made us feel while providing physical evidence. So this is a warning to all’ya player s, Valentine’s day is not a day for romantic diversification. It’s a trap day so keep your act together do not try to kill two birds with one stone.

As earlier stated, women reign supreme on valentine’s day so make an effort to show her it’s a day that you appreciate and love her. A romantic dinner is mandatory on this day. It does not have to cost you an arm and a leg, try burning your fingers and make her a home cooked meal.

There is a story about a man who confused his wife’s gift with that of his girlfriends. It does not take rocket science to put two and two together to catch a thief. Be warned, the romantic mode spreads to the wider female fraternity and our senses; even a slight similarity in wordings of cards is likely to arouse suspicion. Unless your women are spread in 5 different cities, try it at your own peril. Find that ONE special someone among your women and make the day for her!

Thirdly, Valentines may be about the thought and not the gift but you still need to put some thought in whatever you send. Thankfully, this year’s Valentine’s fall on a Sunday so there is no excuse to send withered roses to your woman. I do not care where you live, if flowers are your gift choice please let them be fresh, if chocolates are your choice, please don’t let them melt into chocolate paste then blame

This is a cry to you all; thou shall not send plastic flower, it just isn’t right!

When you do, take time to gaze into her eyes and tell her how much she means to you. It is not time for you to text or to invite your friends to the table or worse still eye other women, make it all about her. Remember to show genuine interest in her, no boring work related talk, economic recession stuff or your World Cup speculations. Look at her and talk about her. On the other hand, men do not go overboard with gifts forgetting the meaning of Valentines. She may be crazy about Valentines but one thing for sure; she only wants to feel appreciated and happy. Whether you choose to make her a charcoal stoked dinner at home, or bring home shells picked up from the beach, she will appreciate it. Whatever effort you put into it she will bubble over in rapturous appreciation. Trust me if you hold onto this advice this Valentines, she will not disappoint you, expect a happy woman. And you all know what that means, you get what you want. Yap! Most men love sex, and love to share a sense of closeness and connection that sex can bring. Play your cards rights and there might be a good chance that a dash of perfume, an unbuttoned nightshirt and an open hand gesturing towards the bedroom will be forthcoming. MAN Feb -March, 2010

Being a Man

By Guy Picard

At last a guy has taken the time to write this all down

The Guy’s

to all men 10

Finally, the guys’ side of the story. (I must admit, it’s pretty good.) We always hear”the rules” .......from the female side.

MAN Feb -March, 2010

MAN MAGAZINE LAYOUT.indd 10

Now here are the rules from the male side. These are our rules! Please note... these are all numbered “1” ON PURPOSE!

1

Men are NOT mind readers. Learn to work the toilet seat. You’re a big girl. If it’s up, put it down. We need it up, you need it down. You don’t hear us complaining about you leaving it down.

1

Sunday sports It’s like the full moon or the changing of the tides. Let it be.

1

Shopping is NOT a sport. And no, we are never going to think of it that way.

1

Crying is blackmail.

1

Whenever possible, Please say whatever you have to say during commercials.

1

Christopher Columbus did NOTneed directions and neither do we.

1 1 1

ALL men see in only 16 colors, like Windows default settings. Peach, for example, is a fruit, not Acolor. Pumpkin is also a fruit. We havenoidea what mauve is. If it itches, it will be scratched. We do that.

1

Ask for what you want. Let us be clear on this one: Subtle hints do not work! Strong hints do not work! Obvious hints do not work! Just say it!

1

Yes and No are perfectly acceptable answers to almost every question.

1

Come to us with a problemonlyif you want help solving it. That’s what we do. Sympathy is what your girlfriends are for.

1

A headache that lasts for 17 months is a Problem. See a doctor.

1

Anything we said 6 months ago is inadmissible in an argument. In fact, all comments become null and void after 7 Days.

1

If you won’t dress like the Victoria’s Secret girls, don’tExpect us to act like soap opera guys.

1

If you think you’re fat, you probably are. Don’t ask us.

1

Thank you for reading this. Yes, I know, I have to sleep on the couch tonight;

If something we said can be interpreted two ways and one of them makes you sad or angry, then we meant the other one

1

But did you know men really don’t mind that? It’s like camping.

1 1

You can either ask us to do something or tell us how you want it done. Not both. If you already know best how to do it, just do it yourself.

If we ask what is wrong and you say “nothing,” We will act like nothing’s wrong. We know you are lying, but it is just not worth the hassle, besides we know you will bring it up again later.

1

If you ask a question you don’t want an answer to, expect an answer you don’t want to hear.

1

When we have to go somewhere, absolutely anything you wear is fine...Really.

1 1 1 1

Don’t ask us what we’re thinking about unless you are prepared to discuss such topics as baseball, the shotgun formation, and or golf. You have enough clothes. You have too many shoes. I am in shape. Round IS a shape!

Pass this to as many men as you can - to give them a laugh. Pass this to as many women as you can - so they understand. MAN Feb -March, 2010

“The challenge is knowing that as a leader you’re sometimes supposed to lead from behind and not always from in front”

2/12/10 5:06 PM

Q Brief us on your background. I was born, grew and educated in Tanzania. I did my Primary School at Hasanga Primary School and Secondary School at Mbeya Secondary School both in Mbeya region, and later I went through Milambo High School in Tabora before Joining University of Dar Es Salaam where I graduated in 1999. At school I was always in leadership position starting for first time when I was in standard two where I was a school prefect for grade six and this was in 1982! This was the first and last time in the History of the school to have a prefect of the school coming from the grade two, it’s also a normal standard across Tanzania to have a school prefect at least from grade three and so I am proud of that record in that school! I also started engaged in business at the age of 12 years selling some items to my fellow students and it’s no wonder that after completing my A-level studies I engaged myself first into business before joining University of Dar Es Salaam. An early engagement into the business and having been always in leadership position especially in my school life from Primary School to University has probably contributed to whom I am today, every experience matters in life and all combined together it makes who you are to a great extent ahead of the class performance! I am married to a lovely wife called Mercy who works with Plan International as the head of human resource and we are also blessed with three children named Jeremiah, Cynthia and Nehemiah junior.

Q What does your job entail? Well as the Chief Executive Officer of the bank, I am accountable and responsible for the whole business in this organization, which means taking care of share holder’s money and interests, staff interests, customer’s interests as well as regulators and the public in general. In short you’re the last stop point where all the buck stops with you! However your success depends on the total quality of the people surrounding you especially the management team, and that’s why some people believes that as a leader you’re as good as the people surrounding you! With banking, as much as you look forward to making profits, you must also be conscientious to risk management especially with customer’s deposits and that’s why banks are very closely regulated across the world and in Tanzania in specific! So as a CEO you’re always expected to be on top of the organization affair and in ensuring that the interest of your entire key stake holder are met and protected.

Q What does it take for one to reach your level? That’s an interesting question, before I used to think these were position for privileged and connected people that are open to few selected people, poor as I was, our almighty GOD proved me wrong. However a clear Vision, Determination and right attitude are the corner stone of growing up the ladder much faster. Success to me doesn’t mean the absence of failures but rather the attainment of

ultimate objectives. It means winning the war and not every battle. Therefore knowing your ultimate objective, having clear and a preferably a written plan and a determination will always take you to the next step, of course there could be an element of a luck sometimes but everyone has a luck and our small difference is on the ability to seeing and seizing the opportunity when you come across it! This is close to the common saying I have come across which says that “Winners don’t do different things, but they rather do things differently”. Becoming a CEO was my dream for a long time, but this dream was consolidated the day when I was celebrating my 30th birthday, this was the same day when I was promoted to be the Head of Global Markets which was one of the business division and the position that had elevated me to the top management team of the bank and on the same day when my boss asked me to be the acting CEO in Standard Chartered Bank for two weeks. Having the right mentors is also fundamental, because you learn a lot through the process since growing up the ladder is also not a quick fix! However I think it should be noted that, to me I don’t think it’s the level that matters in life but rather what you do with that position, and in this aspect I would like my fellow young Tanzania not to be driven by position on its own sake but rather the vision and the legacy they want to leave and the position will come and fill the gap almost automatically!

Q What are the main challenges that you face as the leader in such a senior position at your age? I think the first challenge for any leader is to be able to appreciate the difference between the influential power that can make someone a leader even though no in a leadership position and the power that comes with your title, I call it the power written down in papers. And once you appreciate this difference then you will be forced to act in a manner that other people respect and trust you as they’re natural leader, and when this is coupled with the formal power that comes with your position then you become a preferred and a trusted leader by both people on the top and lower ranks in your organization. The second challenge is knowing that as a leader you’re sometimes supposed to lead from behind and not always from in front. As a young leader you’re always full of energy and you want to get things done much faster you always feel comfortable to be on a driving seat always, and the challenge is how to balance and accept to lead from behind, and also knowing the right time, issues and places where you have to lead from behind and from in-front. Being in a leadership position it doesn’t mean that you must always find the solution on your own way because you don’t have all the solutions of the entire problem facing your organization or your people. However you’re full responsible to drive your team to come up with the collective solution and for this you must drive your people to get to a point where they take ownership and commitment to come up with solutions. And appreciate this fact is also a challenge especially when you are young and you want to prove that you can! MAN Feb -March, 2010

2/12/10 5:06 PM

Q What setbacks did you face at the beginning?

Q How has your bank’s performance been and talking

Not so much that I can remember, may be this is because I have always expected that there will be some setbacks and I will fail on some battles but still win the entire war and hence a need to choose the battles to fight! But certain the lack of trust to our young Tanzania leaders is one of the major setbacks on getting the growth opportunity and even on delivering sometimes. And if you allow to be dragged by some negative people who only see the glass being half empty and not half full then this may become a major setback, and certainly I have come across this one.

of the Financial Global Crisis; how did you weather it?

On this one we do seem to be forgetting very fast the history of this country where a good number of our ministers at the time of independency we are very young and without the experience, but yet they did the good job! So why do we think some of our chaps in their early thirties are still very young to take big challenges?

Q What lessons have you learnt about this profession? From the industry perspective of banking, it regularly calls for honesty, high integrity, trust and confidentiality .That’s what the banking industry calls for, and today this what I have learned to be!

Q What is your general overview about leadership especially in regards to the young Tanzanians? Personally, I have come to learn that leadership can be attained at any level. It’s about being in a position to influence people to make changes at any stage; however I have a feel that we haven’t invested much on this one but rather the formal position is what seems to matter a lot. If this country is to move forward, it will need strong leadership that include a good number of young Tanzanians, because as young people we have most of our emotional equity in our future while the old generation have emotional equity on the past. My general overview is for one to look at leadership as a means of making an impact and bringing change. We all have different levels of leadership which means we have ultimate solutions to all the problems around us and we therefore need to aim at becoming part of the solution to this problem facing our country.

Q What do you love about what you do? The most aspect of what I love about this job is the fact that it gives me an opportunity to impact positively on someone’s life including i.e. our staff and customers. It’s very encouraging and rewarding when you come across the customer who was well taken care of by your staff bank and equally the staff who are motivated and engaged on their daily routine. The challenges that come along with this role is also part of the good enjoyment that I love most! If anything goes wrong, I’m expected to intervene and make the last call. I do enjoy such moments. 14

The Bank’s performance has been good. On average the bank has been growing over 100% year on year over the last four years, this is an incredible results that is good and far above the industry average growth! When I joined this bank in 2006 it was the smallest of all the 33 banks by then in Tanzania. However as of mid last year we were ranked at numbers 14 and 15 on different criteria and ratios. As for the financial crisis, we did see some setbacks. There was a slowdown of business growth in quarter one and two. However 2010 seem to be a good year and the Economy is coming back on its terms.

Q What is your take on the East African Federation with all the free movement across these countries? Are you concerned about it? I am not concerned at all. As far as I know, this will give our region and countries an enhanced prospect of enjoying a market of more than a one hundred million people across the East African region. I know people are concerned with losing jobs and all that but there is truth in that statement if you don’t upgrade yourself and workhard.Free labor movement will force people to work harder and smart. If you are good at what you do, there is no need to worry about a Kenyan or Ugandan. Despite of the criticism from some people on our education system, I am still very confident that our education system is still strong and good enough and it can enable someone to compete better in this free market, however one will need to have the right attitude, confidence, work hard and smart, vision and determination to move compete better and these issues are not thought in any class! These issues are affected by the Environment that we grow, the Experience that we come across in our life from our early child hood and of course from Education both formal and informal and not just the academic qualifications.

Q Have you ever thought of moving into politics one of these days? It’s not the first time that I come across this question. In simpler terms I don’t intend on getting into politics, though as a CEO you’re job requires you to be aware and being able to manage the political dynamics. The divergence is that at corporate level you deal with corporate politics while others deal with political partys. Being a leader in the corporate world gives you a lot of chances to impact people’s lives at equal levels or more than what you would have done in a political party though we all both need each other as well.

Q What have been the highlights 2009 in regards to your work? It has been a great year I should say, we have sustained the aptitude to make profit despite of the prevailing

MAN Feb -March, 2010

MAN MAGAZINE LAYOUT.indd 14

2/12/10 5:06 PM

financial in 2009. We are in the process of opening other branches this January where will open our Ohio main Branch, and two more branches in Mwanza and Arusha coming this March and another branch in Kariakoo by April this year, January 2010.

Q What are your biggest achievements to date? Transforming a loss making bank to become a profit making and a significant player within a period of less than a year with the organization that is 100% managed by local staff. I will endeavor to look out for more opportunities to push forward CBA; I seem to be getting very contented with the results.

“Winners don’t do different things, but they rather do things differently”.

Q What goals do you have for the future? I will categorize these into three; Family, work and personal business. Spending more quality time with family is of very essence. Work wise, I am determined to personally see to it that this business grows and that C.B.A makes it as one of the top ten banks by 2012. And I would also like to retire at the age of 45 and focus on my own businesses.

Q What is your guiding principal in relations to your work and work place? As a leader, my dream has been to make a working place a living place after all if you take time to think about it, it’s where you get to spend most of your time; it’s actually your real life. I am a strong believer on strong performance, that you have to over deliver and out shine your performance, Network with the right people, and being able to sell your results and celebrate. All these are related to each other. If you don’t work hard and smart, you won’t be able to outperform and you won’t sell because there will be nothing to sell and celebrate about. I hope am clear with that point. Treat people with integrity and honesty and learn to have courageous discussions. I call these success rules.

Q What else are you passionate about? Real estate. I think it has a big impact on the economy. I see it as the centre of our life .All the wealthy people have either earned wealth through real estate or are maintaining it through real estate. It can transform our culture. It is actually an area that has vaguely been overlooked and that’s where C.B.A comes in. MAN Feb -March, 2010 MAN MAGAZINE LAYOUT.indd 15

2/12/10 5:06 PM

We were the first bank to start mortgage financing for fifteen years and with effect from January this year, the mentioned mortgage finance will be up to twenty years.

Q What other roles do you play besides being a C.E.O and family man? Beside my work in CBA, I also serve as the Chairperson of University Of Dar Es Salaam Faculty Of Commerce Alumnae Association, A Board Chairman of Rightway Schools, A Board Member of the Tumaini University Dar Es Salaam Campus, A Board member of the Ardhi University Real Estate School, a Trust member of the Presidential Trust Fund which is the Government owned Microfinance Company under the President Office and A Director & Founding member of the CEO Roundtable, a policy dialogue forum that brings together CEO’s of the top 50 companies in Tanzania. I am also a Member of several other country task forces.

Q How do you balance your time between family and all these demanding tasks? It’s a challenge that goes without saying, but that you have one has to undertake. I spent the weekend with my family and evening time whenever possible. With the job demand sometimes it’s very difficult even to get a time for physical exercises and therefore to I do try to go to the office using my bicycle at least one a week, and of course I hate the heavy traffic jams of Dar and riding a bicycle helps me reach the office much earlier than driving I really enjoy on that! Four to six hours are good enough to sleep and especially if you take the deep sleep and I am close to that!

Q How do you cope with stress and disappointment? Stress has been a part of my life and most of the time I don’t notice if I am stressed. I think I had built a strong resilient from my first job where I was a bank dealer. As for disappointment, I should say that I am lack that I don’t keep disappointment in my heart! I prefer communicating to other part where I am not happy on their conduct and why I have been disappointed. But sometime most of the disappointments are our own make, it all depends on our expectation on the other part and whether our expectation are clearly communicated and agreed by the other parts. I think beginning with a very clear communication and confirming the expectations from the both parties and having a candid feedback on the outcome or progress helps a lot reduce the number of disappointments and while managing it better. We have all sinned at some point in time in our lifes and we have therefore disappointed God, we have also disappointed others as well in our conduct and therefore while this is the case however we need to be aware and manage ourselves to avoid more disappointments, and therefore the game start with self individuals!

16

Q If you had to do it all over again, what would you change? There’s little or none at all. I think I would have done it all the very same way I have done. Like I said before, I have some long term plans. As we speak; I know what I’d like to do thirty years from now. I have very tiny regrets besides thanking God for all this.If anything I can only think of what I intend to do in the future to impact positively other people’s lives and make this World a better place for everybody in my own little hemisphere. And any good and progressive CEO, this will always be part of their thoughts!

Q Any words of wisdom for those aspiring to be like you? We all know the story of David and Goliath. There was a giant who was bullying and harassing the children in the village. One day, a 17 –year old shepherd boy came to visit his brothers and asked “why don’t you stand up and fight the giant?”The brothers were terrified and they replied, “Don’t you see he is too big to hit?” But David said, “No, he is not too big to hit, he is too big to miss.” The rest is History. We all know what happened. David killed the giant with a sling. Same giant, different perception. And therefore some dreams are worth pursuing but you need to have the desire, commitment, taking a full responsibility on your journey, working hard and smart, having a right character and attitude, positive believing, giving more than you get, having a pride of your performance and be willing to be a student by getting a good mentor are the key corner stone’s! I am asking everyone to look at life like a green field. Every part of the grass you happen to be standing on is green but when you look further on the other side of the fields, the grass tends to be greener. What am trying to stress here is that it’s one thing to aspire being like me but you have bigger potential to do more than what I have done. All these people we call successful have not spent 25%of there total inborn capacity. The inborn capacity may be huge but the core line is knowing what you want, having written goals, planning what you want and pursuing it. The spiritual power should not be forgotten. Don’t forget to say your prayers. Everything is possible. Some people may aspire to be C.E.O’S or Ministers and look at it as a success. Success is what you do to impact peoples’ lives, what you do with that title, the legacy you live, and what people will say when you die. Success is beyond the title you carry. It’s a seat that drives you to the destination of your dreams.

Success to me doesn’t mean the absence of failures but rather the attainment of ultimate objectives. It means winning the war and not every battle.

Financial Tips

MANAGING YOUR INVESTMENT Opening and maintaining an investment account can be handled in a variety of ways. Some investors take a hands-off approach, preferring to let the broker, as the voice of experience, call the shots and handle the transactions. Other stockholders take mixed roles. Here are some of the ways that you can oversee your stock holdings or mutual fund portfolio:

it falls, you might want to purchase additional shares. The more you understand about the market, the more effectively you can manage your accounts or collaborate with your broker to ensure maximum growth.

1. Keep tabs on stock market reports.

Some brokering firms offer an investment survey that will help evaluate your financial attitudes toward the stock market and an investment account. Knowing your risk level can also help guide you toward the kind of strategies you will want to consider making. For example, moderate to high risk stockholders may be interested in buying and selling stock options as opposed to stock shares. A low risk taker may be more interested in a simpler strategy like rolling stock, or buying when it’s cheap and selling when the price goes up.

Even if you decide not to get actively involved, at least you’ll have a general understanding of the market conditions and your holdings, and can monitor your investment broker’s actions on your behalf. Read the business section. 2. Follow the stock indexes along with your particular holdings. That way you’ll have a pretty good idea of how well your stock is performing and what you would like to do with it. For example, when it goes up, you may decide to sell for a higher profit. Or when

3. Decide if you are a low, moderate, or high risk investor.

4. If you are a take-charge person, it may be difficult for you to trust your holdings to an investment broker.

While you may let that person do the actual trades with your stocks, you may wish to make the decisions and advise him or her as to your choices. But if you feel unfamiliar with the market, it may seem more comfortable to let the broker make the decisions and keep you informed through annual reports. 5. Give some thought as to the purpose of your investment account. For example, you may want to earn interest on your holdings to pay for a son or daughter’s college education. You might prefer to let the interest compound and increase your holdings over time. A broker can discuss options like these with you to provide clear-cut possibilities for the best use of your money. Managing your financial assets can be exhilarating as well as sobering. It may be worthwhile to take an investment workshop or enroll in a seminar to learn more about this dynamic opportunity for financial growth MAN Feb -March, 2010

Management Tips

TIME MANAGEMENT

Ask Yourself: • • • • •

Am I clear about my priorities? Is my time spent in alignment with my purpose? Am I organized and methodical? Do I have effective systems in place? Do I manage time or does time manage me? Do I plan and use my most productive time to do the most productive work?

Some practical and inspiring tips for you are: • • • •

Have a purpose-oriented system Be organized and methodical Measure time Set a time management goal

Have a purpose-oriented system The first step to this system is to understand your purpose. What is the purpose of your work? What is your role in your progress toward your journey? How is your performance being measured? Once you have clarity, the next step is to spend your time around the most important things you need to do to achieve your goals. The more you involve yourself in activities that carry the greatest meaning and value for you, the greater are your chances for experiencing real growth. This may mean giving up some of the things that you are habitually involved in. By doing fewer of these nonessential activities, you free up more time for the essentials. You increasingly focus on areas that are consistent with your goals, objectives, and purpose. If you have too many priorities, you have no priorities!

Be Organized and Methodical Being organized and methodical will enable you to manage time with maximum efficiency. Combined with purpose-oriented timemanagement system, you’ll be able to achieve effectiveness and efficiency. Some practical tips on being organized and methodical are:

• • • • • •

Do the most important work first thing in the morning – as the first hour goes, so goes the day! Don’t shuffle papers; make quick decisions. Some people look at the same paper several times because they are not decisive. Avoid too many interruptions. Some interruptions are necessary for doing business but you also need to carve out some non – interrupted time to get your important work done Delegate effectively. Be clear in your instructions when you delegate. Use deadlines to create results. By creating timelines you can increase your productivity. Do just one thing at a time, finishing it before you move to the next thing (as far as possible). Jumping from tasks to tasks makes you lose momentum and focus.

MAN Feb -March, 2010

MAN MAGAZINE LAYOUT.indd 24

• • • • • •

Be decisive. “Sit, walk or run. Just don’t wobble.” Goes an old Zen saying. That’s another way of saying. “Don’t waffle; be decisive.” Break large tasks into smaller steps. You chew an apple one bite at a time. Breaking big tasks into smaller chunks makes the task more manageable and allows you to get going. Make waiting time more productive. A lot of time during the day gets wasted in ‘wait time’. Make good use of waiting time by spending it in planning or reading important material. Write down your goals every morning. Writing rings clarity and clarity helps focus. By writing your goals each morning you become very clear of where your focus should be. Eliminate clutter. Too much clutter results in a lot of wasted time looking for things. A clean desk with good filing system not only saves time but increases effectiveness. Emphasize results, not activities. Just because you are busy does not mean you are effective. It is not how much time you put in, but what you do achieve that matters. Measure Time

A lot of time daily is wasted because we are not aware of where it is going. There is enough time in a week for work, family, health and even spirituality. Prepare a budget of how you want to spend your time. This is how a weekly budget could look like:

• • • • • • • •

Family/Activities Health/Exercise Spirituality Work/Training Reading Sleep Plan Flex time/Commuting Total

20 7 7 60 7 45 7 15 168

Keep track of where you time goes; it will help you understand and manage your time well. What gets measured gets improved as the old saying goes. In your weekly measurement look at the quantitative aspects of time spent as well as the qualitative aspects. Remember that you have lots of time – 86,400 seconds daily!

Your Goal - Setting Exercise What is the one big obstacle getting in your way of mastering time and life management? Set a goal and timeline to overcome this obstacle.

Goal-setting Example: • •

Lack of clarity is my biggest obstacle to mastering time. I will ensure that I understand my highest priorities at work and the results that are expected of me. I will write my goals every morning so that I keep my highest priorities top of mind. I will begin this exercise NOW!

Curtains for the home or office are made out of all types of materials; lace, cotton, even silk. Factory made curtains are nice but if you’re in a rush for curtains and don’t have money to drape every window in your house, you can make your own with a few materials. One of the best possessions to use is bed sheets. They come in an assortment of colors or prints and also different sizes to accommodate most windows. Usually the top and the bottom of the sheet have already been hemmed, and if the sides aren’t hemmed, they have the finished selvages that don’t need a hem. This cuts down on the time needed to make your curtains.decide on the size of sheets you need by measuring the window, then checking the sheet measurements, or just decide by the size of window. If it isn’t a very wide window, a twin sheet, cut in half, might be sufficient. If it’s a little wider than that, 2 twin sheets should be fine. A very large window, might need 2 queen or king sized sheets to allow some for gathering. There are a couple of different ways to choose the size of your curtains, once you’ve decided on how full you want them to be. One way is to throw the sheet over the curtain rod, stand on a ladder, and pin the rod pocket in place. Pin the hem for the bottom, if needed. If the curtains are the perfect length for your window, just pin the rod pocket in place then remove from the rod then get the seamstress around the neighborhood to sew across the rod pocket Another way to measure the curtains is to lay the sheet out flat, measure the window, then mark the measurements back on the sheet. After you’ve gotten your sheets cut or pinned to the appropriate size, get them hemmed by the raw edges and sewed in all the rod pockets. When making the rod pockets ask the seamstress to add a slight gathering of fabric above the curtain rod. For this look, she should fold the top of the sheet down about seven inches, Stitch across the bottom of the folded piece, then stitch again, two inches from the top. This will give you a pocket to slide in the rod, then additional fabric for gathering at the top. You can now add a material or color print of your choice to the bottom of the curtains, or a piece on each inside seam of the curtain, where the two curtain panels meet. You can also add a gathered lace piece across the top, which hangs down below the rod pocket. For more of a drape look, place two sheets with right sides together under the foot of the machine and get them sewn from the top corner, down. They should be Sewed across the bottom, then back up the other side, leaving the top open for turning. Turn the fabric right sides out and press. Sew across the top, tucking the raw edges inward. then use a piece of sheet or lace which will attach to the front top portion of the curtain, go over the rod, and attach to the top back section of the curtain Stitch under all raw seams. For this design it’s best to have another strip which attaches at the very top front of the curtain and hangs down over the rod pocket to cover the rod pocket itself. You can separate two sheet panels by placing one or two panels of lace in between. You can just throw the lace over the rod, align the front and back bottoms the same length, and then gather it all on the rod, or you can take the time to get your lace pieces hemmed. For small, short windows, like in a kitchen or bathroom, just cut the sheet in two, trim to desired length, get it sewed in rod pockets and hem. Now you can add lace or ruffles, even tie backs made from sheet material or lace. MAN Feb -March, 2010 MAN MAGAZINE LAYOUT.indd 27

Education

by Stephen Mhando

The College Degree

Its benefits are enormous. With it come pride, a sense of achievement and a certain level of respect. It doesn’t come easy but once acquired, lasts a lifetime. In today’s job market, it serves as a rite of passage by which employment is virtually impossible without its presence. One may question what this “it” could possibly be. An old quote sums up the answer quite well; “The roots of education are bitter but the fruits are sweet.” Or are they? There are so many fortunes and perhaps misfortunes that come with the completion of studies. In other words, the fruits may be sweet but it takes quite some patience to get to the sweet part. One is usually issued with a certificate that acknowledges their conclusion of studies after a certain period of time pursuing a field 28

of study. This certificate is better known as a degree or a diploma. It signifies the end of an era and the beginning of another; one we’re not all too familiar with. A degree may spell success, and to others, doom, or both. Fresh from college, we all greet the world with a warm embrace, enthusiastic about the challenges that lay ahead of us. Life is sweet at such a moment. We boast at every chance we get about our newly acquired degrees and our future resolutions. Every social gathering becomes a “must-attend”, we yearn for that occasional “hongera” and we are ever so ready to shout our achievements to the world. After all, we earned it following those years of arduous work in college.

The restless nights trying to fit a whole semester’s worth of studying material into a week, or a three hour study session, and for the adventurous ones, onto a small piece of paper better known as a “mwakenya” or a “chabo.” It was not in vain we tell ourselves, the end product justifies the means. We playfully refer to ourselves as graduates and we resemble bundles of energy ready to provide solutions to each of life’s problems and challenges. Unconsciously, we plot our own downfalls with our naivety, the root cause. Our expectations are as high as ever and optimism is the order of the day. We’re all fervently looking forward to that first pay-check. We’ve already made plans on how to best spend money we don’t yet have. Perhaps a best way to spend it isn’t really what occupies our minds; instead, we’re drafting plans to just spend it. After all, a first salary should be celebrated not saved. Wedding pledges have been made, shopping sprees have been arranged and our expenditure increases. A rough idea of our salary scale already exists in our so called “brilliant” minds. We ignore that thin line between optimism and sheer madness because at this point, we’ve crossed it. This is certainly

MAN Feb -March, 2010

MAN MAGAZINE LAYOUT.indd 28

2/12/10 5:07 PM

the life we’ve craved and the one we apparently deserve. We’re now living a movie, a Hollywood one indeed. “Nobody can burst my bubble,” we dare say. A few weeks down the line, we’re still in a buoyant mood. We’ve taken our ‘sweet’ time formulating our CVs and we believe that an employer’s glance will instantaneously lead to a job. To our knowledge, they are perfect. True to form, the phone rings and the interviews commence evenly distributed once a fortnight. We cannot help but brag about them here and there just so that people feel we’re in demand. “Niko bize na interview” is the standard answer to every “Where’ve you been man?” Soon afterwards we find out that our applications have been unsuccessful and we timidly tuck our tails between our legs. Reality checks in slowly. Fast forward to five months and beyond since our graduation ceremonies, seems the world is crashing down fast with no silver lining imminent in our clouds. Staying home with no job and money isn’t exactly fun (“kufulia” is the most appropriate street slang that describes our predicament). Even sadder is the fact that the interviews have dried up. The monotony has become a constant source of irritation. Those television channels aren’t as exciting as they once were and those social gatherings have now been labeled “no-go zones”. This isn’t what we signed up for by virtue of graduating. What was once a holiday is now equated to a nightmare we wouldn’t wish upon our worst enemies. Things are beyond bad. For those who still haven’t found employment continuing with studies

is an option but for others that isn’t the case. Why go back to school without experience and should I study the same thing or vary it up, they secretly ponder. From left to right, all fellow colleagues seem to have found someone who knew someone to ‘hook’ them up with jobs; others seem lucky because they got them quickly while others have begun their own business

ventures. Self pity ensues and we regret a few things. We begin to wish we’d studied different courses so our skills would be the “hottest” requirement on the market. We even recant the advice we’d given to our peers on choosing courses because of relevance with the job market (our earlier stance was that we’d rather be unemployed than be employed in a job we hate), now we’d just rather be employed for the sake of it. We’re ready to settle for second best and our values diminish quicker by the day. Life has changed drastically right in front of our very own eyes. We are now so self conscious to the extent

we find ourselves embarrassing. We become anti-social because we no longer want to meet new people who’ll ask us what we do for a living. We’ve repeated it several times to people that we’re still searching for employment till we’re afraid that if we blabber it once more, we’ll lose friends because we aren’t exactly the kind of people that others want to associate themselves with. Nobody really likes being around idlers, this is not to say that we are, but we feel that way. We’ve tried numerous ways to make ends meet but all are to no avail. The walls seem to be closing in on us. The word paranoia has just got itself a new definition and we’re it. This is pretty much a low point, perhaps the lowest we’ve got. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel. We were so engulfed in our dismay we nearly forgot the important things in life. Thoughts of God, family and friends spring to mind, we realize that we’re not alone in our struggles. They’ve been there in our triumphs and sorrows, most significantly in this hour of need. We recall religious stories, the one of Abraham and Sarah, their struggles for a baby. We remember the wise saying; ‘good things come to those who wait.’ Close ones tell us that employment isn’t an end; it is a means to smoothly navigating our way to our destiny. We go to school to learn and not to seek employment. We find solace in our faith. Suddenly our hope is restored and we wait patiently knowing that tomorrow will be better than today. Our time will come. Silently we confess to ourselves that with a degree comes a bunch of positives balanced by an even number of negatives, a package we’re all too willing to accept.

Business

G

Marketing strategy

ood marketing skills can help the firm overcome the handicap of operating in an unfamiliar market. Experience has shown that a company’s success in foreign markets depends less on the unique attributes of its products than on its marketing methods. Once a company has been organized to handle exporting, the proper channel of distribution needs to be selected in each market. These channels include sales representatives, agents, distributors, retailers, and end users. A company may also sell directly to a foreign retailer, although in such transactions, products are generally limited to consumer lines. The growth of major retail chains in markets such as Europe and Japan has created new opportunities for this type of direct sale. The method relies mainly on traveling sales representatives who directly contact foreign retailers, although results may be accomplished by mailing catalogs, brochures, or other literature. The direct mail approach has the benefits of eliminating commissions, reducing traveling expenses, and reaching a broader audience. For best results, however, a firm that uses direct mail to reach foreign retailers should support it with other marketing activities. Manufacturers with ties to major domestic retailers may also be able to use them to 30

sell abroad. Many large retailers maintain overseas buying offices and use these offices to sell abroad when practicable. A business may perhaps also sell its products or services directly to end users in foreign countries. These buyers can be foreign governments; institutions such as hospitals, banks, and schools; or businesses. Buyers can be identified at trade shows, or international publications. The company should be aware that if a product is sold in such a direct fashion, the exporter is responsible for shipping, payment collection, and product servicing unless other arrangements are made. Unless the cost of providing these services is built into the export price, a company could end up making far less than originally intended. Locate foreign representatives and buyers A company that chooses to use foreign representatives may meet them during overseas business trips

or at domestic or international trade shows. There are other effective methods, too, that can be employed without leaving the country. Ultimately, the exporter may need to travel abroad to identify, evaluate, and sign overseas representatives; however, a company can save time by first doing homework at home. Once the company has identified a number of potential representatives or distributors in the selected market, it should write directly to each. Just as the firm is seeking information on the foreign representative, the representative is interested in corporate and product information on the export firm. Therefore, the firm should provide full information on its history, resources, personnel, the product line, previous export activity, and all other pertinent matters. The firm may wish to include a photograph or two of plant facilities and products or possibly product samples, when practical. (Whenever the danger of piracy is significant, the exporter should guard against sending product samples that could be easily copied.) A company may obtain much of this information from business associates who currently work with foreign representatives. However, exporters should not hesitate to ask potential representatives or distributors detailed and specific questions; exporters have the right to Continued on page 32

Business explore the qualifications of those who propose to represent them overseas. Well-qualified representatives will gladly answer questions that help distinguish them from lessqualified competitors. In addition, the company may wish to acquire at least two supporting business and credit reports to ensure that the distributor or representative is reputable. By using a second credit report from another source, the firm may gain new

Marketing strategy or more complete information. Reports are available from commercial firms. Commercial firms and banks are good sources of credit information on overseas representatives. They can provide information directly or from their correspondent banks or branches overseas. If the company has the necessary information, it may wish to contact a few of the foreign firm’s domestic clients to obtain an evaluation of their representative’s character, reliability, efficiency, and past performance. To protect itself against possible conflicts of interest, it is also important for the firm to learn about other product lines that the foreign firm represents. Once the company has qualified some foreign representatives, it may wish to travel to the foreign country to observe the size, condition, and location of offices and warehouses. In addition, the company should meet the sales force and try to assess its strength in the marketplace. If traveling to each distributor or representative is difficult, the company may decide to meet with them at local and worldwide trade shows. Negotiations The potential representative is interested in the company’s pricing

structure and profit potential. Representatives are also concerned with the terms of payment, product regulation, competitors and their market shares, the amount of support provided by the exporting firm (sales aids, promotional material, advertising, etc.), training for sales and service staff, and the company’s ability to deliver on schedule. To ensure a conscientious sales effort from the foreign representative, the agreement should include a requirement that the foreign representative apply the utmost skill and ability to the sale of the product for the compensation named in the contract. It may be appropriate to include performance requirements such as a minimum sales volume and an expected rate of increase special attention must be paid to safeguarding the exporter’s interests in cases in which the representative proves less than satisfactory. It is vital to include an escape clause in the agreement, allowing the exporter to end the relationship safely and austerely if the representative does not work out. In all cases, escape clauses and other provisions to safeguard the exporter may be limited by the laws of the country in which the representative is located. For this reason, the exporting firm should learn as much as it can about the legal requirements of the representative’s country and obtain qualified legal counsel in preparing the contract.

Prostate Cancer by Sheila Siima

DIAGNOSIS

A

variety of excellent tests are available to screen for and diagnose prostate cancer.

The prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test is one of the best ways to screen for prostate cancer. This blood test measures a protein made by the prostate that normally is present in the blood. The amount of this protein in the blood increases in men who have prostate cancer. The PSA test is reported in nanograms per milliliter (ng/ml). • • 34

A PSA count of 0 to 4 ng/ml is considered below normal (and in some men, 1.0 or 2.0) is normal. A PSA count of 4 to 10 ng/ml is considered slightly elevated.

• • •

A PSA count of 10 to 20 ng/ml is considered moderately elevated. Anything above 20 ng/ml is considered highly elevated However, one abnormal PSA test does not necessarily mean that other diagnostic tests must be performed immediately. Factors other than cancer can cause PSA levels to fluctuate. In this case, the doctor may suggest repeating the PSA test a short time later to see if the level returns to normal. When PSA levels continue to rise over time, other tests may be indicated.

MAN Feb -March, 2010

MAN MAGAZINE LAYOUT.indd 34

2/12/10 5:07 PM

An elevated PSA does not automatically mean a man has prostate cancer. Conditions other than cancer, including an infection or a beginning in enlargement of the prostate, can result in higher-than-normal PSA levels.

The PSA test is not foolproof. • •

False positive tests results can occur when the PSA level is elevated, but no cancer is actually present. False negative test results can occur when the PSA level is in the normal range even though prostate cancer is actually present.

For this reason, experts recommend that the PSA test should be combined with a digital rectal exam for best results. In a digital rectal exam (DRE), a doctor inserts a gloved, lubricated finger into a man’s rectum in order to feel the prostate. If the doctor finds a roughness and irregular unevenness to the tissue, prostate cancer might be suspected. An enlarged prostate that is not cancerous will likely still feel smooth. The DRE cannot diagnose prostate cancer. It is used to examine the size and surface of the prostate to determine if further investigation is needed. Experts recommend that all men over the age of 50 have a DRE yearly along with a PSA test. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan is a computerized picture made by magnetic fields that can show detailed, cross-sectional images of the inner body. MRI scans can create a clear picture of the prostate gland. Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves that bounce off organs and body structures and produce a computerized image. Ultrasound most often is performed by passing a sensor over the surface of the body. The prostate can be examined through a type of ultrasound called transrectal ultrasonography. In this exam, a tube is inserted into the rectum that carries the sound waves to the nearby prostate, producing a better image. A CT (computed tomography) scan is a sophisticated x-ray producedure that uses a computer and rotating x-ray beams to produce images of soft tissue, bone, and blood vessels. Areas of dense tissue, such as tumors, can be seen better than with onedimensional x-rays. A biopsy is a technique in which a small sample of tissue is taken through a fine needle and examined under a microscope to see if cells are malignant Biopsy is a highly accurate way to tell if prostate cancer is present. The way in which the biopsy is performed varies among doctors. Before having a biopsy, a man will want to ask his doctor about: What the procedure will involve, whether medication can be given to block any discomfort, .and questions regarding risks associated with the biopsy procedure MAN Feb -March, 2010 MAN MAGAZINE LAYOUT.indd 35

Parenting

Teach toddlers to OBEY Toddlers who do things they shouldn’t sometimes entertain us with their antics. When they mimic their parents by saying “No!” or let their hand creep along a tabletop toward something they know they shouldn’t have, we may chide briefly and laugh about it, thinking their behavior is cute. But ignoring disobedient behavior, no matter how innocent or appealing it may be, can send the wrong message to young kids during their formative years. Overlooking, laughing at, or inconsistently correcting a wrong action tells the child that he or she can get away with it, or in fact, may actually win a parent’s attention or praise. It is vitally important for a parent to establish clear boundaries and to ensure the child understands and follows them. If you don’t start early, when kids are young, they will quickly develop a taste for getting their own way and fit parents harder each time they are thwarted. 36

By the time they are twelve or fourteen, they may be talking to parents and other authorities any way they wish, they will continue to ignore rules and follow their own inclination, and will consider disciplinary action as unfair practice by the parent who failed to provide consistent supervisory responses in previous years. Getting a toddler to obey involves a series of steps, none of which is terribly difficult. The hard part is supervising the child adequately to consistently catch and appropriately address wrong behavior. Start with a verbal reprimand. A sharp “No!” or “Stop!” should not take the form of yelling, but it may require the raising of the parent’s voice to a firm tone. This can be followed by a brief explanation as to why the child should not do it:

What upsets you about the industry?

Besides the local soap “Hukumu ya Tunu” what other productions have you been involved in? Before that opportunity I was a model with a local magazine in town called Bab- Kubwa and later advanced to another modeling agency called Dollywood and continued in the very same profession as a model for small billboard advertisements but I was also an up-coming music artist under the group zero–brain some where in Posta where the new Benjamin Mkapa building is. I do have a few tracks with Mandungu – digital and also have a programme with Lamar from Fish–Crab cookout. But for now am based in the movie industry as well as local soap arena. The reason is that the music industry needs a lot of financing and promotion, I thought I should first go into the film industry and it seems to be working. Currently am now working with the Top-Shots in Tanzania’s film industry and i am sure that am making my way to the top. After the soap Hukumu ya Tunu, I got roles in three different movies I also did play a role in a local series called “Darubini” that was being aired by ITV. Right now am working with PilI-Pili Entertainment. I already have two soaps done and a movie called “Nani.” For starter’s “Martin” was showcased on TBC early last December and was already showing in one of Kenya’s TV stations. What are some of your personal achievements? I have gained a lot for starters, popularity. Getting to know different people in the movie

The biggest problem is, artists don’t have unity . There is a lot of hatred and selfishness. Some of the male artists they tend to bring local ladies who don’t have any talent and leave those that have been in the industry toiling to find roles to play. It’s very sad. This is what makes our movie industry lag behind - people tend to consider relationships before career. How do you spend time away from production?

industry as well as my fans has also been something that has made a difference in my life. For now I thank God that to some extent, I can depend on my movie career for survival to What are some of the challenges you faced? For Hukumu ya Tunu was my first soap so everything I was doing was new to me. What lessons have you learnt about the profession? The biggest lesson I learnt from all this is living with people of different characters. It has also given me enough confidence and has broadened my knowledge and have learnt the basics of the movie industry and how to deal with people in this same field. I have also learnt how to live like an actor . it has brought a lot of impact to in life.

Am always doing something off production. You’ll catch me in the studio writing lyrics. What do you love about what you do? Because it’s more of reality. It entertains and educates. It’s got me off the streets so I do respect my work. What is most stressful thing about your job and how do you ease it? Misunderstandings with fellow cast members really ticks me off or acting a role with someone who hasn’t mastered there lines - it’s very tiring going through the same scene over and over plus having multi-purpose directors who play the lead acting roles, and want to be directors and the camera man at the same time. The best way to ease all this stress is to get off set, relax, get some counselling or talk to someone, calm down then you’ll be as good as new to continue.

Relationships

IS SHE READY For Marriage

When a man decides he has found the perfect woman to marry, how sure is he that she’s ready for the next step? You’ve found the perfect woman, the woman you’ve waited all of your life for. The next coherent step is then to ask her to marry you. But prior to that last step into the unknown. you might want to stop and ask yourself some pretty serious questions. Since every relationship is different, nobody can probably tell you everything to consider. The most important question, however, may be whether or not she is ready for marriage.

40

A crucial part of any relationship is learning to communicate. Understanding each other’s wants and needs both in the present and the future is inevitable. If you have decided on a career in Aviation that takes you away from home, and your lady is intent on raising a family together, this probably is something you’ll want to work out. Finding out these things about each other is one of the ways you can decide for yourself whether a woman is ready for marriage, and possibly save what could be a very embarrassing moment.

Of course you may perhaps just simply ask her either directly or discreetly how she feels about marriage. Either way you might be surprised at her answer. She may have bad experiences with marriage in the past, which would prompt her to be completely negative about marriage, or she may have had wonderful loving parents and a great childhood, which may have given her a positive outlook on marriage. Whatever her answer may be, you will need to listen carefully not only to her words but to her attitude as well. You will have to decide for yourself what impact this will have on any future plans.

Are there “taboo” areas of your lady’s life she refuses to discuss with you? Assuming we’re not talking about a law breaking record, her reasons may or may not affect your eventual decision. All of us have some experience from a life before we met that we may not at first decide to discuss. Since good relationships are based on open and honest communication, any taboo areas should be resolved before entering into a enduring commitment.

MAN Feb -March, 2010

MAN MAGAZINE LAYOUT.indd 40

2/12/10 5:07 PM

As human beings we all tend to carry around experiences with us from previous relationships. A frequently used term for this is “baggage”. Although not always negative, it’s good to understand what kinds of relationships our prospective spouse has had in the past. If the woman you’ve set your romantic sights on is young, her experiences may have been with a boy in school who shunned her affections, or if older may be an ex-husband who abused her. Before anyone can move on to a better relationship, they must first deal with any previous baggage. This always takes each individual a certain amount of time, and cannot be rushed. Gauging another person’s maturity level can be very tricky and isn’t always based on their age. We can’t naturally assume that someone is mature simply

because they’ve reached an arbitrary age. In some countries maturity may be based on age fifteen, while in others is not recognized until twenty-one. Maturity is always something to consider since it will affect your relationship, because one of the measures of maturity is the ability to accept responsibility. marriage isn’t just some long-term commitment but also a big responsibility to each other. In the end, the decision to marry, and whom we decide to spend the rest of our lives with is an individual decision. We can certainly decide to rush headlong into marriage with someone we barely know, but we must also be willing to accept the additional risks involved with that decision. The wise man will stop and give serious thought both to the timing of his proposal and to the person he is offering his life to. MAN Feb -March, 2010

Construction

SAFETY TRAINING FOR YOUR TEAM Planning has constantly been part of our lives. Every day, we plan for things that we are going to do, may they be for that particular day or for the next few days. In business, planning is very crucial. It is the course of action that enables all the members of the business to do specific activities efficiently, in order to make the organization successful. Without careful planning, things would probably fall apart. In the construction business, planning could mean everything. This business engages the building or structuring of buildings, establishments or sites. They are responsible for our homes, malls, schools and other establishments that we see daily. Effective constructing is crucial; a mistake in the building or structuring of buildings could mean the eventual of a particular structure. When this happens, a lot of people could be harmed. This is why planning is the very foundation of the construction business. Without planning, numerous things can go wrong; there could be delays in schedules, costs could go beyond the budget or materials could be neglected. Without planning, failure of the construction project is not only possible, but likely. This is why many construction businesses today

have turned to the construction management software program. The construction management software program makes the management of a particular construction project a lot less difficult and a lot more convenient to take on. It helps abridge the work of the construction project manager by bringing all the crucial details of a construction project together for easy and regular checking. Some of the elements of a construction project that the construction management software can automate are the budgeting, scheduling and the materials. With the budgeting, it logs on the costs of the construction project and the costs that are already taken from the budget so that you can check it regularly. With the scheduling, the construction management software can help you make sure that there are no delays with the timeline. If there are, it allows you to be alert to it immediately so that you can take appropriate action. With the materials, it can log on all the materials to be used for the project as well as the ones present so that you can keep tabs on what is needed all the time. Planning need not be difficult. Everything is automated and logged

on. When you are not sure of something or if you forget something, you only need to access the construction management software program to be able you determine the status of your construction project. This software can also make projections or estimation regarding your construction project which can significantly help you plan carefully and wisely. Customer trust credibility is built.

and

Because the construction management software can give you estimates and projections regarding your construction, you are able to give your clients a future look on the project they have entrusted in your hands. This builds trust and brings up your business credibility. Details are automated for easy checking. You can easily keep tabs on the way your construction project is going because details on the elements of your project are automated in the construction management software. This way, you are able to handle possible problems immediately. With the construction management software, you are able to manage your project from beginning to end with efficiency. FINDING LIFE

BALANCE AMIDST CHANGE

Azim Jamal has spoken about achieving life balance amidst change and chaos and igniting your untapped potential to over 1,000,000 people worldwide. He is the author of several books, including The Corporate Sufi and the co-author of # 1 Amazon best seller The Power of Giving. Visit his website at www.azimjamal.com.

Just as creation is constantly evolving; so too are we as individuals. With every breath we take we are being created afresh. The last century has arguably seen change happen at a more rapid pace than ever before. Consider how the Internet and other technology have revolutionized the way we communicate and do business. Or how the recent crisis triggered by greed have altered our perception of the world. So how can we find life balance amidst the current environment of constant change? In this article I will address three questions:

be living balanced lives! These are people who are busy doing what is really important. What one needs to consider is that balance means putting enough quantitative and qualitative time into what is important to you! So really what you are looking for is a meaningful existence and a place to channel all your passion, as opposed to just covering the bases. The secret for Maya Angelou, who is one of the most popular living poets today, an Emmy Award-winning actress and producer and mentor to Oprah Winfrey, is “finding many ways to feed my soul.” Balance for you may also mean finding many ways to feed your soul.

What is life balance?

Why do we need life balance?

It is important to know what life balance means to you. To do this, you need to know what areas of your life are important to you.

How do we get life balance?

Why do we need life balance?

What is life balance? When our lives are balanced it means we are centered. We are able to make life decisions from our core values and principles, rather than succumbing to a reactive mode or “fire fighting.” Having balance, also means being able to spend sufficient quantity and quality of time in areas that we have defined as being important to us. Life balance can be viewed in many ways. It can be a balance between home and work. Or a balance between body, mind, and soul. Or it may be a balance between one’s material and spiritual lives. If you define balance as devoting equal portions to different areas of your life, then most successful people – CEOs, Nobel Prize winners, Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela, and Mother Theresa – would not 44

If your life is balanced, you are better able to sustain your success — without burning out. A recent article in a Canadian newspaper reported that $400 billion has been spent on stress-related illness in the work place. In many cases, stress comes about because of lack of balance. If you are worth billions of dollars, but in the process of acquiring that wealth you lose your health, your wealth will not replace your health, even though you may be able to afford the best medical treatment. Money can also not replace the loss of a family member if you have become estranged from them in the process of acquiring wealth. And if your financial ambition causes you to lose your connection to your spirituality, your success may not allow you the degree of satisfaction and a deeper understanding of the nature of that success.

MAN Feb -March, 2010

MAN MAGAZINE LAYOUT.indd 44

2/12/10 5:08 PM

Balance creates synergy. An active and healthy body helps the mind and the spirit. When your mind is active and positive, it helps the body and spirit. And when your soul is nourished, it helps the body and mind. The synergistic effect that occurs through balance results in better all-round productivity. When you are able to spend enough quantity and quality of time in areas that are important to you, the result is immense satisfaction with your life. You will find meaning and fulfillment and happiness. As Og Mandino, the author of The Greatest Salesman in the World so appropriately said, “When all is said and done, success without happiness is the worst kind of failure.”

How do we find life balance? Finding life balance starts with having clarity of purpose — knowing what you want and why you want it. Without clarity, we are unable to focus. This leads us to do too much, and results in imbalance. Remember, it is not how fast you go or how efficient you are that count, but rather whether you are going in the right direction. If you are heading in the wrong direction, even thinking positively will help only temporarily. Knowing where you want to go helps you to say “No” to things that are not important to you. There is an inverse relationship between urgent and important. What is important is generally not urgent. Things only become urgent because we have neglected to do the important things. For many of us, our health is not an urgent issue — until we neglect it and it becomes urgent. Most of us take our mental alertness for granted. But if we don’t do the important work of developing our mind, over time it will not stay sharp. On the surface, spiritual alertness may not seem to be a priority in our lives. However, if we fail to reflect and meditate, over time our connection to our spirit will become weak. The key is to spend the bulk of our time on the things that are important in our lives, and to eliminate that which is unimportant. Having clarity of purpose can help in determining what is important and what is not. If you find that you cannot eliminate the unimportant things in your life, then delegate or procrastinate these activities. This leaves you free to

focus on executing around a tight set of priorities. To find balance, remember that less is more. I have found that spending twenty minutes each day doing exercise, twenty minutes reading, and twenty minutes meditating helps me achieve balance. I call this the hour of power. Starting your day with an hour of power gives you a head start. Where can I find this hour, you ask? Try going to sleep an hour earlier at night. Another way of finding balance is to combine two important activities. We multitask in so many other areas of our lives, so why not in the areas that are important? Try listening to educational CDs while driving or running on a treadmill. Or spend twenty minutes a day walking with your spouse or child or a colleague. That way, you make sure you are spending time with the people in your life who are important, but are still getting your exercise. By scheduling weekly important items such as family activities, exercise, reading or praying time, you can ensure that you always include them in your busy week. Finally, true balance comes from being integrated. When we are able to fuse our life in such a way that everything we do is grounded on principles that are important to us, we are living with integrity. If we integrate the way we walk, talk, eat, and run our business, we will feel centered and balanced. Having life balance brings meaning, fulfillment and happiness to our lives. Despite the constant changes in our environment, it is possible to find life balance. Most often, this is achieved by being able to spend enough quantity and quality of time in areas that are important to you -- as defined by you, not by someone else. Focus your time on the important stuff of life and strive to live an integrated life. Copyright © Azim Jamal. All rights reserved

Health

CURE WITHOUT

DRUGS Understanding what causes a headache is the first step toward figuring out a cure. Your brain is surrounded by fluid, and a headache is merely a change in the amount of that fluid. So if you have too little fluid, you get a headache. Too much fluid around your brain, nonetheless, causes most headaches. It is transported by your vascular system, which consists of your veins, arteries, and capillaries. Constrict the veins in your head so that they pump the fluid out of your brain more quickly. Put an ice pack on your head or on the back of your neck, and you will find that your headache slowly dissipates. If ice on your head makes your veins pump fluid more quickly, put your feet into warm water while icing your head. Your headache will fade away hastily. Opt for a cup of coffee, or a coca cola to be precise. Caffeine constricts the blood vessels in your brain, so a big cup of coffee can often make that pain in your head disappear like magic. Caffeine is commonly used in pain relievers that are touted as ‘pain killers’. Certain foods also cause headaches. When you get a headache after eating a particular type of food, you are essentially having a mild allergic reaction to this food. To relieve this type of headache, eliminate a food you 46

suspect is causing the problem. If that doesn’t cure the headache, eliminate another until you find the culprit. Other headaches are caused from tension, and they are mostly centered in the neck. To mitigate type of headache, sit by yourself in a quiet room for a few minutes. Then run a warm bath in the bath tab and soak for a while, making sure that your neck is submerged. After the bath, sit down with your hands in your lap, neck relaxed. Drop your chin to your chest, then gently rotate your neck in a circle until you feel the muscles relax. You soon may find that your headache has vanished. Headaches have many causes, and it doesn’t always necessitate a drug to cure them.

Heartburn: Tired of waking up

in the middle of the night begging to die and pleading for the ease of the pains of ongoing heartburn? Eating spicy foods and chilies peppers are great cures for heartburn. It couldn’t be more wrong. Spicy foods especially if you have an ulcer, or a severe case of acid reflux, only seem to make the pain greater, and even more frequent. Try this out: When awaking from heartburn discomfort, stand up immediately. Go to the kitchen and drink at least 8 oz of cold

“Understanding what causes a headache is the first step toward figuring out a cure.” water. After drinking water, take 1 tablespoon of dry baking soda and mix it with 1/2 cup water. Drink the entire mixture (additional water may be needed to remove rough feeling on tongue). It will not keep heartburn away forever but it will coerce it away in approximately 3-5 minutes and should keep it away for 24 hours or more before a supplementary dose is needed. An additional quick plan is to drop 1/2 teaspoon of vinegar onto a single slice of white bread and eat it immediately. This may leave a discomforting taste in your mouth for some time, but it should keep heartburn away for at least 48 hours. Check with your doctor for more conventional medical therapy

Trying out a low-carb diet?

Here are some tasty substitutes to enjoy: Look for low-carb pasta. Macaroni and spaghetti are carbohydrate-intensive, so plan to avoid these. But many super markets now carry a lowcarb version that you can enjoy occasionally. Read the box to see how many carbs each serving contains, and add those to your daily count. Experiment with different textures, sizes, and even colors to add variety to your meals. Give numerous types of rice a try. Although rice also has a fair

MAN Feb -March, 2010

MAN MAGAZINE LAYOUT.indd 46

2/12/10 5:08 PM

amount of carbohydrates, you may be able to find prepared mixes that have low-carb value. Also, since rice comes in natural grain form, you can probably eat a smaller portion to get full than you can with pasta. Just be sure you follow the carb counter’s measurement for getting the right-sized serving to stay within your daily intake limit. Rice mixed with low-carb vegetables helps to ensure you get more produce and less grain per serving. Add more veggies to your meals. While some of these vegetables have higher carb levels than others, most are still lower than starchier foods like potatoes. You also can fill up on fresh salads or chopped veggies dipped in low-carb dressing for a refreshing and filling side dish and potato substitute. Eating potatoes on a frequent basis is more of a habit than a need. With a few thoughtful changes, most of us can rearrange our diets to reduce the amount of starch we eat while increasing healthy veggies and carb substitutes without overdoing our protein intake.

How much protein do you really need to build healthy muscles. Protein is commonly found in many different types of food, especially in meat and dairy categories. A three ounce serving of beef, for example, contains roughly thirty grams of protein. One cup of yogurt has about ten grams of protein in it, while peanut butter contains roughly four grams per tablespoon. Milk, cheese, soy products, fish, eggs, and nuts also contain protein, just to name a few more foods.

It’s essential for the proper operation of your body’s functions. It plays a major role in regulating the glucose level in your bloodstream. It also helps our bodies create antibodies to fight against infection. Your hair, fingernails, toenails, bones, muscles, and cartilage are all created from protein.

if you consume eighteen hundred calories, that two hundred and seventy of those calories should be from protein. It is estimated that the average man consumes about ninety grams of protein every day, while the average woman consumes around sixty grams of protein daily. Therefore, according to these statistics, the average man and woman get a sufficient amount of protein in their diets every day. However, consuming a lofty amount of protein will not make your muscles grow stronger and healthier. A blend of a proper, well - balanced diet and exercise will accomplish that goal. If you consume more protein than your body needs, the excess will simply be thrown off as waste from your body. In fact, an excess of protein can actually be stored in your body as fat, not muscle. Another negative factor in consuming too much protein is that it can cause undue stress on your kidneys because they have to work harder to banish the excess from your system. If you are an active athlete, and are seeking to build healthy muscle, you should then eat a balanced diet daily that consists of the major food groups and see to it that your daily diet contains a sufficient amount of protein in order to further your muscle building goals, but be cautious not to overdo it. Even if your goal isn’t to build additional muscle, you should still eat a healthy daily diet and make sure that you get enough protein in your diet so your body can function appropriately.

If you are a fairly inactive adult, you need to consume 0.36 grams of protein per pound of body weight every day in order to get the needed amount. That means, for example, that if you weigh one hundred and fifty pounds, you need to devour about fiftyfour grams of protein daily. Your protein intake should make up about fifteen per cent of your daily caloric intake too. That means, for example, that MAN Feb -March, 2010 MAN MAGAZINE LAYOUT.indd 47

Drink Responsibly

Take your beer safely There’s hardly a man who doesn’t enjoy his drink, but few among us know what the happy elixir does to the body and the mind. This article on alcohol is not meant to turn you away from your beer, but to let you know what happens when you throw a few ones back.

Alcohol lowers inhibitions

Alcohol acts as a sedative on the central nervous system, which explains impaired speech, vision, coordination, and concentration. But the part of the brain it affects the most is the part responsible for behavior and emotion. Your sense of judgment is weakened, and suddenly speaking your mind doesn’t seem so bad. You feel braver since your socially conditioned safety stops or filters are circumvented. This is why drunken people sometimes think they’re OK to drive. The one time a drunken friend could be annoying indeed is when they won’t let go of the car keys!

48

Makes you develop a higher the lining of the stomach. This is what causes the familiar upset tolerance to alcohol Any fast-living college dude will tell you that it’s getting more and more expensive for him to get drunk. No kidding. Prolonged alcohol use does increase your tolerance to the stuff. The body becomes more efficient at metabolizing the alcohol -- the process is up to 72% faster in alcoholics -- so it takes more booze to achieve the same drunken state. But beyond that, your organs simply become less sensitive to alcohol, so you don’t feel it as much. Be careful; this is a precursor to permanent tissue damage. Good thing you read this article on alcohol before your skin blisters yellow.

It’s possible to get sick when drinking

Like many of us, you’ve probably had an upset stomach or thrown up at one point after drinking. A byproduct of alcohol breakdown by the liver is acetaldehyde, a toxic substance. It is, in fact, this molecule that causes impairment, not the ethanol in your drink. In high concentrations, acetaldehyde attacks the liver, the brain and

stomach and heartburn. If it’s too much for the body to handle, it forces the stuff out, resulting in a make-out session with a toilet bowl. Acetaldehyde poisoning is compounded when different alcohols are mixed.

It’s bad to drink alcohol on an empty stomach

It’s bad only if you plan on enjoying your night to its fullest. When you drink on an empty stomach, there’s no food to slow the absorption of the booze. Result: the alcohol gets absorbed faster (within five minutes) and you get intoxicated more rapidly. You’ll get just as drunk as if your stomach was full, but it will hit you harder. On the other hand, drinking alcohol on a full stomach allows you to go through a gradual ascent into tipsiness.

Dehydration becomes high

The body starts breaking down alcohol as soon as you take your first sip, in order to safely excrete it. To properly dispose of it, your liver needs water to dilute the toxins, so it pulls water reserves from other

MAN Feb -March, 2010

MAN MAGAZINE LAYOUT.indd 48

2/12/10 5:08 PM

parts of the body. But since alcohol is a diuretic (it stimulates urination), water leaves your body at a higher rate, so your liver must obtain water from other organs, including your brain, which essentially leaves you high and dry.

One can loose life out of too much drinking

Yes, and in more ways than one. We’re talking about a variety of conditions, including liver and heart disease caused by alcoholism, suicide, drunk driving, and just drinking yourself to death. In fact, a blood alcohol level above 0.45 grams/100 milliliters of blood will kill you either from brain malfunction or respiratory arrest. Alcohol effects on the liver Your liver is your body’s detox center (detoxication), and it works full-time to rid your body of the poisons you ingest. Alcohol is one of the liver’s biggest foes, constantly attacking its cells. If you drink moderately, your liver has enough time to repair itself. However, persistently high alcohol levels in the blood will cause your liver cells to die, forming scar tissue. This is called cirrhosis, and it can be lethal. Some men are likely to become emotional when drinking alcohol You already know that alcohol dulls your judgment and your inhibitions. This may bring out some emotions

that are usually kept in check by your “show no feelings” strongman persona. Although alcohol increases the female hormone estrogen in men, there is no evidence that this affects their emotions in any way. However, prolonged alcohol use and the related estrogen boosts can cause loss of body hair and muscle mass, enlarged breasts, shrunken testicles, and impotence in men.

Guys, you might wanna read this again…I am! Time that alcohol remains in our the bodies

There’s no single answer for all people since the rate of alcohol metabolism varies and you need to factor in the rate at which it’s absorbed. On average, healthy people eliminate alcohol at a rate of 0.5 ounces per hour. This can change according to how much you had to eat before, your body mass, your gender (men metabolize faster), your age, how hydrated you are, and how efficient your liver is (alcoholics tend to eliminate alcohol faster, though this changes once the liver becomes damaged).

Drinking red wine might make our teeth red Like coffee, nicotine and some

fruits, red wine has colored molecules that get deposited on the tooth enamel. The ones in red wine are called tannins and polyphones, which are also antioxidants. Some dentures and treated teeth are especially susceptible to red wine stains, so ask your dentist about methods of prevention. Don’t drink while taking antibiotics Despite a widespread myth that combining antibiotics and alcohol can be dangerous, alcohol can only diminish the efficiency of a few antibiotics, namely metronidazole, cefamandole and oral ketoconazole. Though not life-threatening, the mix can cause unpleasant side effects, like flushing and extreme drunkenness. Otherwise, alcohol can simply delay recovery. However, mixing alcohol with certain painkillers, especially acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil) and acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin), can increase the risk of damage to the intestinal lining, which can cause gastrointestinal bleeding and ulcers. In chronic heavy drinkers, excessive acetaminophen use can increase the risk of liver toxicity.

WHAT NEXT?

Now that you know some of the effects that alcohol has on your body, use the information for your own benefit. Have fun, but always drink responsibly.

If you’re still reading this article after the opening line, congratulations. You’ve just made the best decision you’re going to make today. By reading the first line alone, chances are you think I’m the stereotypical guy who hates Valentine’s Day; and doesn’t believe in love. I’m not. I’m here to enlighten you. Now, while I am no Dr. Michael or expert at love, I would like to share with you my ideas on how to use this year’s Valentines Day for a better future relationship for that special one in your life from this man’s prospective. When celebrating Valentine’s Day, you’re celebrating the person you love and what you have with that person, but chances are what you have is of no relevance. Valentine’s Day shouldn’t be a holiday or celebration, because if we were to stick to its core values and true meaning, shouldn’t it be a celebration that exists every day? Don’t get me wrong.

Valent ine’s Day: A Real Man’s Perspective

50

Every relationship has its ups and downs. But shouldn’t you have the same feeling most days, that you do when your boyfriend gives you flowers on Valentine’s Day? Shouldn’t sex be just as good every normal day as it is on February 14? Shouldn’t we be excited to talk to, and see our significant other every single day of the relationship? Ladies, don’t get me wrong -- we’re as much to blame as you, if not more. We get lazy, we stop caring, we stop going down on you, we stop listening; I get it. That doesn’t mean we should dedicate a day to mass producing chocolate when our people in Morogoro are starving, selling pink and red teddy bears, and putting pressure on ourselves to make Valentine’s Day magical -- only to be reminded that we need to work harder on our relationships. In my own life, most people that know me (including myself) would say I’ve been nothing short of cavalier with just about every female that’s come into my life (references available upon request). I’ve messed up. A lot.

But even with all of the mistakes I’ve made, I never tried to change who I am or what I was about, even on that one “special” day out of the year. Instead of creating a formula on “how to make Valentine’s Day special,” “what to expect on Valentine’s Day,” or an overall “guide to Valentine’s Day,” I propose that the following list be worshipped every day of the year (for guys and girls, married and unmarried): 1. Be a listener more than a talker. Put down the newspaper, turn off the television, put the cell phone on vibrate, and focus on your spouse. The all but forgotten rule: God gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason. I believe that that reason is to listen twice as much as we talk. Take it from someone who has learned from experience, many a relationship as well as marriages could have been saved over time if this rule was followed more often and faithfully. 2. Be hero/heroine in bed. Make love at least 5 days a week (get down at least 3 of these 5 days for extra happiness). It should be quality love making. Spare me the details, please. You should know better. 3. Don’t lie. Whether you’ve cheated, or something’s bothering you and you tell each other otherwise; be honest. 4. Share your appreciation for your spouse publicly. Let your partner know that you appreciate him and all that he is doing for the family. Do not do this with words that evaluate and rate performance, such as “good,” “fantastic,” “wonderful.” Instead, be specific about what you appreciate and describe the effect his effort has had on you and your family life. Let your children overhear some of this specific appreciation 5. Demonstrate support for your spouse by encouraging her aspirations and interests. Remember, you are parenting as a team. Rearrange your schedule if needed so that your partner can enjoy that Tusker at his or her favourite pub, pool table game, or reading quietly. When only one person’s interests are being met in a relationship, imbalance occurs and the entire family feels the effects of the load being placed on the other parent. Create balance by supporting your spouse’s interests so that your family can run more smoothly.

6. Establish a date night every couple of weeks and actually spend time together as adults. Get a babysitter, pass the kids to the grandparents, or take turns watching another couple’s children. Make the time to nurture your relationship on a regular basis. The kids will be comforted in knowing that Mom and Dad take care of themselves, too. 7. Keep your commitments. Do what you said you would do. When you say that you are going to pick the kids up at a specific time, do it. If you say that you will watch the children while your spouse takes a parenting break, then step up and handle the situations that arise. 8. Succeed at home first. Yes, your jobs are important. Yes, it is important that your careers flourish and that you find meaningful work that is satisfying and rewarding. And what is the value of being successful away from home if you are unsuccessful in creating a loving, connected family? Make one of your Valentine gifts to your family a commitment to place family first. 9. Refuse to speak negatively about your spouse (or ex-spouse) in front of your children. Keep your feelings and comments to yourself or share them privately with the person in question, regardless of the circumstances. When you need to vent, do it with a friend, a family member, or a therapist. Negative comments about your child’s other parents are never to be uttered in their presence. 10. Take her out to eat. It doesn’t have to be (at least for most) a fancy wine and dine meal at Movenipick Hotel. Just spend time and talk and have a relaxing evening while enjoying a good meal. You can even get creative and take her on a picnic/beach or back to the special place you met her if possible. I assure you -- if you follow these simple rules, you’re in for a much happier relationship than the one you currently have. If you’re already doing the above, regularly, you’re doing better than 99 percent of the population. And lastly, if you’re alone this Valentine’s Day, don’t sit around moping, trying to feel bad for yourself while asking what you’re doing wrong. Valentine’s Day is the biggest day of opportunity to meet people in your position. Go out there, land a one night stand, and enjoy yourself. Come on! MAN Feb -March, 2010

Success

Compiled by Zaynabu Turuku

It is time of the year, the American business magazine Forbes has published its annual list of the richest people on planet Earth and ClickAfrique have had a look through to see how Africa fared. 2008 was a tough year all around, the credit crunch unleashed havoc across the globe, commodity prices crashed, export markets shrunk, stock markets have headed downwards and foreign investors have fled riskier markets as they rushed for safety. The culmination of these factors has seen some big changes in the league table of African wealth with many fortunes deciminated and a new man at the top.

Mohammed Al Amoudi (Ethiopia) He ranks No.1 in the African rank No.43in the world’s rank with his Wealth amounting $ 9 billion. He has the honor of the being the “Richest man in Africa”. Ethiopian born Mohammed Al Amoudi is based in Saudi. Al Amoudi has successfully preserved his $ 9 billion fortune through these troubled times and that act of financial stewardship alone has seen him rise from No. 4 to the top of the list and No. 43 in the world. His interests are spread across Sweden, Middle East and his home country.

Nicky Oppenheimer & Family (South Africa) He is in the second in the African rank, World Ranked at 98; his Wealth is $ 9 billion. They say diamonds are forever and the Oppenheimer family proved this as they remain as a mainstay of Africa’s rich list and they have weathered the financial crisis relatively unscathed. They were aided by having sold a significant part of their Anglo American empire at the peak of the market. 52

Africa’s Richest Men Nassef Sawiris (Egypt) With his Wealth of $ 3.1 billion Nassef ranks No. 3 in the African rank and No. 196 in the world’s rank. Nassef may have only dropped one position in the list but losing that one place was accompanied by a loss $7.9 billion. His wealth has been hit by blows of falling valuation of his construction interests, Orascom Constructions which has dropped over 80% from its peak, and falling oil prices which have affected many of the Middle Eastern clients. Last year there were three Sawiris brothers in the list Naguib, Nassef and Samih.Move forward one year, mix in a global financial crisis and only two brothers are left in the billionaires club with Samih ejected. Naguib who last year was the richest man in Africa has lost an eye- watering $ 9.7 billion over the year as the value of his telecommunications empire, Orascom Telecom Holding crashed by close to 90% and he now finds himself nestled in fourth place on the list. He was positioned No. 4 in the African list, World Rank No.205 his wealth amounted$ 3.0 billion

Aiiko Dangote (Nigeria) A few years ago, the Nigerian Stock exchange was one of the world fastest growing exchanges but it has plummeted over the last few months and with it has gone a substantial proportion of Dangote’s wealth, dumping Dangote into the 5th position in the African list while the World list ranks him No.261 with $ 2.5 billion wealth. Despite losing over $800 million he still moves up to two places as others have suffered even more painful loses.

Mo Ibrahim (Sudan) ClickAfrique omitted Mo Ibrahim from the list last year, this time they didn’t want to make the same mistake twice. He is in the 6th position in the African rank, World Rank 430, Wealth at $2 billion. Mo Ibrahim made his fortune building up the Celtel mobile phone empire. And selling it on to Kuwait investors. In recent years he is most famous for his $ 5 million African leadership prize.

number 7 in the African Rank No.430 in the World’s rank his wealth being $ 1.3 billion.

Patrice Motsope (South Africa) African Rank No.8 – World Rank No.559 Wealth $ 1.3 billion. Patrice Motsope was a new entrant this time last year his mining empire benefiting from record commodity price to make him the first black south African to make the African rich list. A year on, the fall in commodity prices particularly platinum has hit hard his personal wealth falling to $ 1.1 billion placing him number 8 in the African rich list and number 559 in the World list with $ 1.3 billion.

Femi Otedola (Nigeria) He is in No.9 on the African rich list, World Rank No.601 Wealth at $1.2 billion. Last year saw the debut of Aliko Dangote s the first entry from Africa’s most populous country, Nigeria in the Forbes Billionaire list. This year sees another entry, oil magnate Femi Odetola.Odetola is one of a cortege of moguls who prospered under Nigerias last administration, others include Aliko Dangote, Jim Ovia (Zenith Bank) Michael Adenuga (Glo Telecoms) and Tony Elumelu (UBA) bank. It would be no surprise if one of the latter three makes the list next year.

Onsi Sawiris (Egypt) In 2008 the Sawiris family was easily the richest family in Africa with father Onil and sons Naguib Nassef and Samih boasting a combined wealth of $ 35.7 billion. The global crisis has seen this wealth decimated. The patriarch of the Sawiris family, Onil saw his personal wealth plunge from 9.1 billion to 1.7 billion on the back of the collapse in the value of the Sawiris construction group, telecommunication group and leisure interests. Despite that fact Onsi Sawiris was able to claw to

Johann Rupert and Family (South Africa) African Rank No.10 – World Rank No.601 Wealth $ 1.2 billion it is another bad year for the Rupert’s family. Once ranked No. 3 on the list of the richest in Africa. The family is in danger of slipping out of the list all together. The bulk of their wealth is tied into the Richemont Group, a major player in luxury goods and this is a sector that has been particularly hard hit by the global downturn, slipping Johann MAN Feb -March, 2010

FOR THE FAN OF 4X4s !

For fans of serious 4x4s, there’s nothing like the combination of a big off-roader powered by an even bigger diesel engine. That’s because gutsy, lowrevving performance means a V8 oil-burner will propel even the heaviest vehicle up the steepest slope, leaving petrolpowered alternatives strug-gling noisily with wheels spinning. Although Land Rover’s fresh 3.6-litre V8 unit was made available in the top-spec. 54

Displaying all the urgency of the supercharged flagship, the newcomer still manages a respectable 25.5mpg. It also offers an enormous 640Nm of torque from 2,000rpm, with 500Nm of character of the original car. that available from 1,500rpm. Capable of 0-60mph in 8.5 seconds, this diesel model is further improved by changes to the gearbox. A new Sport mode speeds up shifts, particularly when changing down a ratio. But the most impressive attribute of the V8-engined machine is the way in which all of this has been achieved without spoiling the

So while stylists have given the TDV8 its own look with a reworked front grille, changes to the interior - and more importantly, the chassis - have been kept to a minimum. The result is a vehicle that feels very stable, even on uneven roads. Only under heavy braking is the extra weight of

In fact, it sounds so much like a petrol model, we had to check under the bonnet to be sure we were driving the right one! Luckily, to avoid any confusion at the pumps, Land Rover has developed a new top to the fuel filler which makes it impossible to put anything but derv in the tank

BEST BODY EVER

THE MORDEN GUIDELINE New bodybuilding training tips are at your disposal. These days, the most intense, energy-infused muscle building routines as well as the best bodybuilding workouts from the best gyms are being introduced in a more extreme and powerful way. The body deserves nothing but top-of-the-line training, that’s why proven winners in muscle building and breakthrough formulas provide better assistance to help the body achieve a more defined core and extreme muscle growth with simultaneous activation of fat burning reaction within the body. The following bodybuilding workouts act as a muscle building catalyst - igniting muscle fiber expansion, flooding the veins and employing vascularity. In bodybuilding, the abs serve as the main attraction. For out-and-out ab development, one should employ an improved version of shredding the abs faster than ever. instead of drawing the cable from the shoulder to the opposite knee in your ab workout, doing it in every line of action is considered effectual. You must determine your start and end points (shoulders, waist, knees and ankles) and perform a maximum of 12 reps in one line, changing sides

and repeating the routine. If you are committed to torching fats above your belt, compound exercises will rally round in training trunk muscles and building a stronger and leaner midsection. Doing Proper Deadlifts. The most common weakness among novice body builders is the difficulty of doing proper deadlifts. For starters, pin-pull deadlift or the use of a pin in the rack will help. What you need to do is to set the deadlift at a certain height one finds comfortable with the use of a pin in the rack and execute the routine mindful of maintaining proper posture and form. Another variation is the trap bar deadlift. This routine works best for those who have shoulder and hamstring inflexibility. Among the deadlift deviants, this variation works the quads further, even if one is working on the same muscle group. The moment you reach shoulder flexibility and strength, you can now go on to more advanced bodybuilding workouts. Add Few More Pounds to Your Bench. Another top-of-the-line bodybuilding training is by boosting your bench press. This can be done by mimicking a sit-up exercise by means of raising the head and upper

back off the bench as you lower down the weights to your chest. As an end result: the body loosens and uncoils like a weighted down spring, helping you push and impel more weight. If you can’t keep up with an almost likely sit up routine as you do the bench press, you can always try on an inclined bench. You can lie face up with two feet flat on the ground holding weights in both hands. Slowly lower the bar to the sides of your chest taking particular attention of bringing all the weights down to the sides as you pause and push back up. These are just few of the newest and modern guide to muscle building training. As a general rule, the reps and sets are of case-to-case basis and reliant on ones improvement. Therefore, for beginners, it is important to stick to the standards of accomplishing bodybuilding workouts five sets of five reps with a few minutes rests in between sets. According to bodybuilding gurus, a maximum of five reps is just right in between. You won’t find it too light, but neither will you find it too heavy as you likewise manage to keep your posture and form strict all throughout the routines. MAN Feb -March, 2010

GREAT READS

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Dr. Ben Carson offers a touching and very personal look at the inspirations for his own life. Revealing the challenges his mother and he and his brother faced help the reader connect. What a refreshing point of view! Although he is highly skilled and intelligent, he takes the time to offer hope to those faced with life challenges, it’s a good reminder of the importance of determination and faith.

Would you like to make more friends? Would you like to be able to persuade more people to your way of thinking? Would you like to be a better parent? A better salesperson? Then you will want to put How To Win Friends & Influence People on your annual reading list. How To Win Friends & Influence People is one of the granddaddies of the self-help genre. Dale Carnegie first published the book in 1937. It has continued to be popular because of the always-appealing topic and because of Dale Carnegie & Associates, Inc., the organization that perpetuates Dale Carnegie’s courses. What is the principal message of this book? It’s basically to live the Golden Rule -- “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” How do you do this? Through empathy. Take an interest in other people. Understand their interests and motives. Give them praise, encouragement and appreciation. Understand that one of the greatest human needs is to feel important.

Iam an avid reader, who reads a wide range of books from management and leadership; to historic documentaries and other novels. I am currently reading “The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness” written by Stephen R. Covey, which is an extension (or continuation) to his previous best seller, “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.” The book that made a significant impact to me would be “How to Stop Worrying and Start Living” written by Dale Carnegie. I would like to invite my friends Ramadhani Unguu, George Byabato, Desmond da Silva and Joe Laurent to join my Book Reading club.I would like to recommend “How to Stop Worrying and Start Living” as this book is incredibly inspirational and conquers work and fear. People believe that they are alone in misery but indeed there are so many others that suffer from similar afflictions. This book will guide you on how to appreciate what one is, and what one has; and will also guide on how to turn misery or liabilities into success or assets.Another book, if I may add; is by the same author (I am a fan of Dale Carnegie’s writings) is titled “How to Win Friends and Influence People” This book demonstrates the means of interactive problem solving and inter-personal skills for day to day business and social activities.

THE SECRET By. Ronda Byne

It help me think positive.Basically the book talks about positive thinking. Just like Mother Teresa said “If you call me for an antiwar meeting am less likely to show up bout if you call me to a pro-peace meeting I will very well show up.”you have to think positive. It may sound selfish but frankly speaking it has helped me get almost everything I want. We are all in a struggling world. Struggling to archieve so you will find quotes by famous philosphers such as Davincci, Abraham lyncoln. It’s weird how you get to realise that you can connect with these philosphers even plato. If you always think positive, the universe attracts your mind to what you want. It may not be now, today or tomorrow but someday, you will get what you want. That’s the power of the mind. I learnt that the universe is there for all and that we can all archieve our dreams .it’s just about putting your mind to work. I have many but I can give a few examples: john grisham, jeffrey archer, Ben carsun, sidney sheldon, danielle steel and James hardely chase.

Who was the Man with the Iron Mask? have been ‘The Man with the Iron Mask’. Little did St-Mars know at the time just how famous his prisoner would become.

The mystery surrounding this famous French prisoner has intrigued historians, writers and the public for centuries. Archives containing letters and documentation are to be found in their abundance in many French libraries and museums, not to mention the many fictional novels that have included the story. However, the identity of this mysterious figure has remained an enigma until as recently as just before the outbreak of World War I (1914). This article will describe the myths, the facts and the romanticism surrounding ‘The Man with the Iron Mask’. The first official report of this prisoner was written by the Officer-in-Charge of the main tower of the Pinerolo or Pignerol Fortress, Benigne d’Auvergne de St-Mars. At that time, January 1665-April 1681, there were five prisoners under St-Mars’ control and one of these is believed (by the German historian Dr. Wilhelm Broecking) to 60

St-Mars was transferred to Exiles where he was the Governor from 1681-1687 (the masked prisoner was not at Exiles), before he became the Governor of the French islands Saint Marguerite and Saint Honorat (called the Ilês de Lerins off the coast of Cannes in the French Riviera today). The masked prisoner went with the Governor to these islands before St-Mars was finally, under King Louis XIV’s orders, made the Governor of the Bastille in Paris (1698-1708). The masked prisoner came with St-Mars to the Bastille where he stayed until his death five years later on November 19th, 1703 at around 10pm. His death was sudden and unexpected, so rapid in fact that the prison chaplain had not been able to perform the last rites. The name - Monsieur de Marchiel - was entered into the register and his burial cost 40 livres (old pounds). The original death certificate was kept at the City Hall in Paris until 1871 when it, and the building, was destroyed in a fire. His final resting place was St. Paul’s cemetery in Paris. It was not until after his death that public interest in the Man with the Iron Mask reached epic proportions. Stories abounded growing more fanciful by the day, fed by writers who had talked to prisoners at the Bastille, and by people in high-ranking positions. It was during this time that the legends

took root and many accepted the stories as facts. The people of Paris believed that the masked prisoner was actually the twin brother of King Louis XIV, imprisoned because he was seen as a threat to the throne. He was kept masked (under threat of death if he removed his disguise) so the story goes, to prevent anyone from knowing his true identity. There were various ‘twists’ regarding the prisoner’s heritage; some believed he was the younger or elder brother of King Louis, others that Louis was a bastard and the prisoner the rightful King. The question of who his father was, was also greatly debated - being given alternatively as the Duke of Buckingham, a monk called Fiacre, Louis XIII and Cardinal Mazarin. Most believed his mother was Queen Anne of Austria, the wife of Louis XIII. Not everyone thought the prisoner was a royal prince however, including Duchess Elizabeth Charlotte of Orleans. In her letters she suggested that the masked prisoner had been an English Lord, imprisoned for his involvement with the Duke of Berwick against King William of England. Writers, including Voltaire, contributed to the many myths surrounding the prisoner by writing that the masked man had tried to communicate his true identity to the outside world by writing on a silver plate and throwing it from his prison window to the river running beside the Bastille. These, and similar stories, suggested that this prisoner was given special privileges, including the contention that Governor St-Mars himself attended to his needs and wants. It was also widely believed that prison

officials gave him the utmost respect waiting to be invited before they spoke to him, providing fine linens, special meals and expensive books for his use. Much was made of his supposed love of fine linens, ‘proving’ to many without a doubt that he must have been a Royal. The last thread of stories regarding this, now famous, prisoner, were directly concerned with the mask that he wore. Many believed that it was made of iron; constantly encasing his head and that there was a moveable, hinged jaw to enable him to eat. There is no truth in these stories however because documentation quite clearly reveals that the mask was made of black velvet. That he was given special privileges is also disputed. The evidence reveals that when he first arrived at the Bastille officers had furnished his room. This suggests that he was not wealthy because at this time prisoners were expected to furnish their own rooms. That he was royal is also open to question in that he did not have his own room the entire time he was at the Bastille, but rather, in 1701 when the prison became overcrowded, he was made to share with two others (Ricarville - imprisoned for criticizing the government when he was drunk, and Tirmon - a servant accused of dealing in ‘black magic’ and in seducing young girls). If the government had wanted to keep his identity secret and prevent him talking to other prisoners, the argument goes that they would have

kept him segregated in a room of his own. There is also no conclusive proof

that he wore the mask while in his cell (putting paid to the notion that it was a permanently-fixed iron mask) and also that in the seventeenth century it was quite common in Italy (less so in France) to mask prisoners. In fact, while the prisoner was at the Bastille there were two other masked prisoners in custody there. In the Ilês de Lerins and Cannes there is another legend. The people there believe to this day that the Man with the Iron Mask was Louis XIV’s brother, the rightful King of France. They also believe that he escaped in the dead of night via a rope from the island of St. Marguerite and met supporters with horses on Cannes’ shores. There he rode a white horse to Paris where he was killed in an ambush. However, the facts, careful research and deductive reasoning led Dr. Broecking to the conclusion that the masked prisoner was probably the Italian Antonio Ercole Matthioli,

born December 1, 1640 at Bologna. Matthioli, an astute, clever man became the Secretary of State to the Duke of Mantua, a province of Italy. He was awarded the title of senator by the Duke’s successor, Ferdinand Charles IV - which held the hereditary title of Count. Matthioli became powerful and rich but his unscrupulous selling of a treaty drawn up by Louis XIV of France and the Duke of Mantua (whereby Louis pledged to buy the fortress at Mantua) to France’s enemies resulted in him being kidnapped by French soldiers and held at Pinerolo for treason. The Duke of Mantua disowned him and Matthioli was given the fictitious name of Lestang, kept masked for his protection. It is notable that the Man with the Iron Mask was buried under the name of Marchiel - this may have been a French misspelling of his true name. In conclusion, the story of the Man with the Iron Mask captured the imagination of the world. It is tempting to believe that he was really King Louis XIV’s brother but the facts suggest that he was probably a powerful Italian Count. Regardless of the truth, the Man with the Iron Mask’s story led many French people to mistrust the French Bourbon dynasty and may have contributed to the French Revolution. Napoleon has even been connected to the mysterious masked prisoner - many believed he was a direct descendant and therefore had the divine right to overthrow the monarchy. The myths surrounding the masked prisoner live on today in film, books, plays and poetry. His fame has therefore surpassed the historical facts.

A DIFFERENT ME

A Different Me is Cole searching for that one man that can make her whole. Sure, it’s not a new topic. However, the allure to a Keyshia Cole album is how well she can deliver that concept through her voice and lyrics. Her hit single “Love” wouldn’t have been as massive had it not been for the emotion that emoted from her throat. On her latest venture, the stress and conflict isn’t as prevalent in her voice. Rather, a pleasant smile can be heard in this outing for better or worse. Songs like “You Complete Me” and “Brand New” feature Cole at her finest. Both songs exhale a certain relief that provides a soothing soulfulness similar to what a warm blanket and bowl of soup can provide on a chilly night. The moody production of “Oh-Oh YeahYea” gives Keyshia a canvas to paint her feelings on while Nasir Jones drops by to punctuate the offering. As good as her life may be now; it always doesn’t translate on record. Some songs just fall a flat. “This Is Us” may be a good song for any other vocalist. But for Keyshia, it lacks the energy that she is known for.

LIONEL RICHIE JUST GO

A quick look at the writing and production credits for Lionel Richie’s latest reveals his obvious desire to connect with an audience too young to remember mid-’80s hits like “Dancing on the Ceiling” and “Hello.” Akon, Ne-Yo, Stargate, “Tricky” Stewart and the-Dream all contribute to an album with an up-to-the-minute digital sheen. Yet thanks to Richie’s confidently grown-up vocals and his consistently mature subject matter. Here’s a guy whose romantic timeline stretches past tonight to “Forever and a Day,” as one track puts it”Just Go” never sounds calculated or desperate. In fact, highlights like “I’m in Love” and “I’m Not Okay” showcase a cultivated cool. Perhaps a first for this longtime champion of tenderness and devotion. TRUE RATINGS: 62

Give us your thoughts on the music industry. Music is altering now because of various upcoming artists that are very talented. But the music industry itself has already put borders around the genres and the media has also contributed to fans being categorized for example A.Y; he was nominated for the M.T.V music awards but didn’t get enough support from the people at home because of categorization by the media. Some give you massive air play while others don’t Tell me about your upcoming album? It’s an album with different music genres and arrangement as well as the singing skills since I have reggae r&b and Afro-pop to be exact. Whom did you work with on this album? I worked on it myself as well as some other producers though I am a producer myself. I worked with Allan Mapigo, Sagini Majura, Arthur Chilwa, and Slach k . What was it like working with them? I was contented because they believe in me as an artist and they have something in music that I don’t have so when you put two and two together you get something beautiful and worth-while. Which is your favorite track on this album? It was called Africa Unite until I altered it to Peace because when I sing this song, I feel like am convincing Africa to unite and come as one. All this fighting ends up taking us a step back. In the process of working on this album, who inspired you? A lot of people. For starters, my family who have been supporting me tooth and nail from day one of stepping into the studio right up until the last minute of my new video. Then there is my sister Lady J.Dee whose band I was a member of for four years. I have learnt lots of things from her. I learnt to be confident and believe in myself as an artist and stick to my God –given talent. She also immensely inspired me to do live music. Ruge Mutahaba has also been a never-ending inspiration to me. Hehas always praised me when I do well, he is more of a brother and mentor and confidant as well. What is this album about or what message is this album supposed to send to your fans? It’s an album dedicated to motivating and encouraging my fans in general. What more should we expect from you this year? I just released my new track with Blu called “WATASEMA” ;come January 2010 a new hit will be dropped called “I LOVE YOU” which will be supporting my album called “Mama don’t Cry” which consists of ten songs. Mwanza Region.

Mwanza is found in the extreme northern part of Tanzania. Its mainland is dominated by Africa’s largest lake; Lake Victoria which the lake’s half portion is found in Tanzania. Mwanza is Tanzania’s second largest city and the economic heart of the Lake Region. Geographically, Mwanza lies between latitudes 1, 30’ and 3, 0’ south of Equator. The region’s altitude is 1.134 m above sea level on the southern shore of LakeVictoria. Come feel a fresh and gentle breeze, a friendly humidity and nice temperature throughout the year. Its location gives tourists dramatic pleasure of viewing unique features like Bismarck Rock especially while trekking in the evening. Mwanza is an important crossroad of the region with a railway connecting Tabora,Dodoma and Dar es Salaam. Ferries to Ukerewe Island, Kamanga, Bukoba and Port Bell in Uganda are available at a reasonable price. In the past one could find itdifficult to visit remote tourists’ attractions that are in Mwanza but with a quick growth of tourism industry in the region it’s not hard anymore. Mwanza’s background dates back to the existence of the late Aniceti Kitereza, born 1896 in Sukumaland/Tanzania. He was the grandson of the King Machunda from Silanga-Clan in Ukerewe Island in Lake Victoria. After attending the missionary school and studying theology he worked as catechist and translator. He knew German, English, French, Sukuma, Kikerewe, Swahili, Greek and Latin. He wrote several books on historical topics of East Africa, collected folk tales and wrote the big family saga of King Machunda in the Kikerewe language. The latter has been published in German under the title of “Die Kinder der Regenmacher” and “Der Schlangentter” In 1873 the explorer Stanley came to Ukerewe, where he asked King Lukongo to help him construct canoes to enable his team to cross to the north western part of Lake Victoria. In return, Stanley offered to teach the king how to transform human beings into lions and leopards. A promise, which Stanley never fulfilled. Cultural Tourism in Mwanza. Bujora cultural centre, It’s a sukuma museum centre situated 20 km eastern Mwanza along Musoma road. Visiting this centre you get a chance to learn about Sukuma culture. Among other things if you visit this centre you get to see 66

traditional Sukuma dwellings; a house of a traditional healer and a royal drum pavilion that was used by Sukuma kings. There is also along time church built in 1969 by David Fumbuka Clement the Quebecois missionary priest who is the founder of the museum. For visitor that would like to spend a night at the centre there camping sites on the very grounds of the centre. Historical sites and museums, Kagaye is a historical site found in 1800s.It is a small village very prominent in the past years. This village is part of Sukuma Kingdom. Sukuma land comprised of 52 separate and independent kingdoms (chiefdoms).Kagaye is the smallest of all. However, Kagaye is one of the oldest historical sites in Tanzania. The colonial explorer named Stanley was the first man to measure its precise Geographical position, Longitude 33, 13’east and Latitude 2, 31’South. There are monuments of the memory of those unfortunate and innocent victims of slave trade. Slaves were chained for a long and terrible journey to a distance of about 720miles (1200kms) between Kageye and Bagamoyo. The historical site also has Grave yards of Frederick Barker an Explorer who died of Dysentery on April 23rd 1875.Jonh Smith a Missionary died on 11th May 1877 and other black men that were buried at Kageye. During colonial era the village was visited by explorers like Dr. Fisher a German who made his way to Kagaye in December 1885 when he was travelling from Buganda. Mv. Bukoba graveyards, it’s a place where victims of the 1995 ship sinking accident were buried. The accident occurred in Lake Victoria and claimed lives of a huge number of peoples’ lives. Mv. Bukoba’s sinking was the largest marine accident to ever occur in Tanzania’s history. The graves are in Igoma area 13 km eastern Mwanza.. Mv. Bukoba memorial tower, the tower was built for the sake of preserving the sad memory of the place where Mv. Bukoba sank claiming lives of about 700 people in 1995. The tower is built on the top of the rock pointing into the lake specifically where the ship sunk. The tower is in Bwiru place, cars and motor bikes are available to take you there.

Islands and Bird watching, Rubondo Island is in the lake’s south western corner. Get to feel a lovely tranquil atmosphere and see excellent birding. For birds’ lovers the island bares almost 400 species of birds and fish; eagles, stork, ibis, kingfisher, and cormorant. The island also has chimpanzee, hippos, crocodiles, and elephants (introduced a decade ago) as well as sitatungas “amphibious” antelopes that like to hide among marshes and weeds along its shoreline. An island provides for spot fishing, trekking and camping sites in its eleven smaller islets. Find the Island which is named after Saanane Chiwandi a caretaker of the island boat executions. BEST FOOTBALLERS WHO NEVER PLAYED IN THE WORLD CUP

Football's global showpiece doesn't always feature the best players from around the world. MAN MAGAZINE lists ten of the finest who never got the chance to flourish on the highest international stage...

9) LIAM BRADY (REPUBLIC OF IRELAND) Like Johnny Giles before him, Brady was unfortunate to excel in an era when the boys in green were unable to qualify for a major tournament.

10) KAZUYOSHI MIURA (JAPAN) 'Kazu' was Asia's first soccer superstar and pursued his dream all the way to Brazil where he turned professional in the 1980s.

During his long career he played in Serie A with Genoa and became Japan's first recipient of the Asian Player of the Year award. Miura was a star draw in the early years of the J.League and clocked up almost a century of appearances for the national side. He announced his retirement from the international game in 2000 so was unavailable for selection when Japan co-hosted the tournament two years later. At 42, Kazu is still going strong with FC Yokohama in the second tier of the J.League. 'Kazu' remains a legend in Japan

68

but despite representing his country on over 120 occasions he never got the chance to show his class on the world stage. The Finns came agonisingly close to reaching the play-offs for France '98 and, at 38, Litmanen continues to play for the national side. Given that his nickname is Merlin, don't bet against him weaving some magic for Brazil 2014 when he'll be 43. Remember Roger Milla...

An outstanding midfield talent at Arsenal and Juventus his international career ended ignominiously when Jack Charlton substituted him before halftime in a friendly against West Germany in 1989. Given his experience of Serie A he would have made for a decent impact sub against the Azzurri in Italia '90.

Finns didn't work out on the international stage for Litmanen 7) ERIC CANTONA (FRANCE)

8) JARI LITMANEN (FINLAND) Finland's greatest ever player won everything in the game at club level Lit up the Premier League during the 90s but Cantona fell foul of authority too often to feature at a major tournament, including an untimely insult of French coach Henri Michel on national TV. France's lamentable showing at Euro '92 doesn't count.

Les Blues blew it in the last minute at home against Bulgaria for USA '94 and by the time France '98 rolled around the gallic playmaker had long since hung up his boots after being replaced by Zinedine Zidane in the affections of Aime Jacquet a year previous. Cantona in typically brash mode

Along with Neville Southall, Mark Hughes and Ian Rush, the young winger was part of Terry Yorath's exciting Welsh side which should have qualified for USA '94. Needing to beat Romania at home in their final group game, they squandered a golden opportunity to reach their first finals since 1958 when Paul Bodin missed a penalty and the Romanians ran out 2-1 winners.

6) VALENTINO MAZZOLA (ITALY) A tragic case of what might have been. Mazzola was an integral part of the outstanding Torino side who dominated

Giggs clutches another honour but international success eluded him series of rows with the German Football Association. Schuster's decision was hastened after dividing the nation by deciding to be present at the birth of his son instead of playing for his country. Without him, West Germany reached three World Cup finals when Schuster was at his peak playing for Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Serie A in the 1940s. The Italian Duncan Edwards, the versatile player perished along with 30 others in the Superga disaster in 1949 having represented his country on only 12 occasions. For one of those matches the Italian side was made up of 10 players from Il Grande Torino. His son Sandro would play in three finals tournaments, including the 1970 tournament, in which he featured on the losing side against Brazil in the final. 5) BERND GERMANY)

Up there with Cantona for talent and controversy, the formidable German starred for his country when they won the European Championships in 1980.

Schuster: Hmm, who will I fall out with next? 4) RYAN GIGGS (WALES) Brazil coach Dunga said Giggs would walk into his national side, but English football's most decorated player was born in Wales instead.

3) GEORGE WEAH (LIBERIA)

One of Africa's players of the century came closest to football's highest stage in 2002 when Liberia missed out on qualification by a single point. Weah was more than just a player in his final playing campaign as he invested his own money and coached the national side to within a whisker of the World Cup. In a 2002 interview Weah said, "If I only wanted to play in the World Cup, I could have played for France. I also could have played for Cameroon, and I think with either I could have made a World Cup." A patriotic Liberian Weah made an unsuccessful bid for the Presidency in 2005.

2) GEORGE BEST (NORTHERN IRELAND) Best by name, Best by nature according to Pele. The extravagantly gifted boy from Belfast only made 37 appearances for his country, which were most notable for a cheeky disallowed goal against England at Windsor Park when he outfoxed Gordon Banks, and for nutmegging Johan Cruyff in a World Cup qualifier in 1976. He was briefly considered for Northern Ireland's squad for Spain 1982, but at 36 and his body ravaged by alcohol it didn't happen. Arguably the Best player ever. 1) ALFREDO DI STEFANO (ARGENTINA, COLOMBIA, SPAIN) Playing for three different countries and winning five European cups wasn't enough for the Real Madrid genius to feature at a World Cup. His Argentina side refused to take part in both 1950 and 1954, by which time di Stefano was ineligible having represented Colombia. The blond arrow took Spanish citizenship in 1956 but couldn't help La Roja qualify for the finals in 1958. Four years later it looked as though his time had come as Spain reached the finals in Chile, but just before the tournament di Stefano picked up a muscular injury which was to rule him out of the tournament. Without him the Spanish were home before the postcards and di Stefano quit the international scene for good.Di Stefano had to be content with five European Cups instead of World Cup glory.

M OV I E S

Last Word

By John Paul Asenga

REAL MEN DON’T BEAT THEIR WIVES!

BE A HERO

Her desperate wailing wafted eerily in the silence of night. The wounded cries started out strong then grew feeble as the beatings became more intense! We all knew what it was an endemic and violent disease. That night we were moved, as one angered by the desperate cries, furious with the callous husband, we handed him a beating! A taste of his own medicine! It was an experience that got me thinking about the many women out there are abused, who are suffering and succumbing to mental and physical injuries that have been inflicted on them. I sympathize for those who die in silence and misery because they are too afraid to speak fearing reprisals from their menacing husbands or even having the issue sorted out by family members thereby perpetuating the torture.

Domestic Violence is an issue that needs to be talked about aggressively and ultimately stopped. It is a culture that is degrading, its goes against all rights of freedom civilized humans should enjoy. Your woman, be it the wife, girlfriend or partner, is an equal. Consider her sacred role in your life, the numerous supportive and loving things for you that balance your life, from pampering and caring for you to nursing and nurturing the children. She defines your social standing, representing you out in public as a grounded man, she is you’re your reflected image, if that is image is hurt, you are hurt as well. A famous East Africa songstress sang a haunting ballad lamenting the abuse of women, she sang; “Musa, when you married me, my face didn’t have any blemishes, my skin was as smooth as a baby’s face, now I have I have scars!” Her song goes to show that that it is important to speak out against this vice.

I may have ruffled a few feathers, maybe even got some on a guilt trip, but there is no way we can ignore the issue. We need to speak out and come out if we know we are perpetrators. How does one feel after the act? Brothers, Fathers, uncles, my fellow men, please! We need to stop the violence! As it is in life, today it is your partner, tomorrow it may be your sister, aunt or even worse, your child! We have the power to stop the pain, heal the heartaches and dry the tears! Yes, we are strong, but our warrior strength should protect the home and village, bring back a lion’s head, which today is the daily bread. Our present day crowning as a fierce Moran is proving to be a family hero, not by beating a woman.

Treat her as queen and she will treat you like a king!
