Kids Korner Your Update on Kids’ Activities, Events & Informational Tips

The Parent’s Guide To Back To School (ARA) - Getting organized for the first day of school is key to a successful year ahead, so parents and students should start early, make a plan and set a budget. Get started by taking inventory of items left over from last year. Avoid overspending on unneeded items by developing a shopping list based on what’s really essential. Try repurposing old folders or notebooks by covering them in patterned paper to create a new look. For students in elementary school, Target.com/backtoschool is an online resource with tools to help parents and kids prepare for the first day of school. Parents can find a link to TargetLists, an easy-to-use, list-making service to help keep track of everything needed for the back-to-school season. ENROLL NOW!!

The next step is to set a budget. Try involving kids in the shopping process by giving them a budget and encouraging them to stick to the shopping list. If they come in under budget, set that money aside for supplies or clothes that are needed later in the school year. Including children in the process will help teach them to shop responsibly. Designate a back-to-school space to stay organized at home, suggests Sabrina Soto, Target style expert for home. “Hang a yearly calendar and a dry erase board so it’s easy to keep track of everyone’s schedules. Set up storage bins with extra school supplies so kids have everything they need for each project they are assigned,” she says. Finally, it’s important to transition the family into the school year routine. Avoid morning madness when school starts by gradually easing into school season bedtimes and wakeup calls two weeks prior to the first day of school. This will make the transition back to school easier for kids as their body clocks will already be adjusted.

Getting ready for school is no easy task, but making it stress free will get kids excited and start the year on a positive note. Parents can also help their children’s school succeed by enrolling in Target’s Take Charge of Education Program, a school fundraising initiative where by shopping with a REDCard, you can give money to your child’s school and receive 5 percent off of everything on the back-to-school checklist. QAC Economic Development Initiatives Approved The Queen Anne’s County Board of Commissioners voted July 26, to approve two new economic development initiatives designed to create and retain jobs in Queen Anne’s County. The approved programs are part of the county’s Revolving Loan Fund program; the Strategic Assistance Revolving Loan program and the Commercial Vineyard Establishment Revolving Loan program. The goal of the Revolving Loan Fund program is the creation and retention of jobs in the county and to date, five businesses have received assistance through the Business Development loan program and each have created employment opportunities. The purpose of the Strategic Assistance loan program is to assist existing companies in growing their business through expansion within the county, support product diversification and other growth opportunities. The fund is available to companies that have been located in Queen Anne’s County for three or more years and are well positioned for growth. Projects seeking funding must be located within established Priority Funding Areas (PFA) in the county. Priority funding areas include incorporated municipalities, business parks, and other areas within the county including Kent Island. The adaptive re-use of vacant commercial buildings is strongly encouraged. As a direct result of receiving this funding, the company must demonstrate the retention and/or creation of full-time jobs. The Strategic Assistance program encourages the utilization of existing commercial/industrial buildings for companies seeking to expand. The Commercial Vineyard Establishment loan program is to assist in the preservation of agriculture land and to promote agri-tourism in the county and on a regional level by providing financial assistance to aid in the establishment of commercial vineyards. Recognizing that the establishment of a viable commercial vineyard takes approximately three years, this program allows borrowers the flexibility in repayment options during the time that the vineyard is not fully operational. The use of loan proceeds must relate to the installation of new commercial vineyards, including, but not limited to, the prepping of land for vineyard installation, purchase of vines, vineyard equipment and supplies. The purchase of wine making equipment and rolling stock, such as automobiles and trucks, are not eligible for financing under this program. For more information about these programs, including specific guidelines, contact Jean Fabi, Queen Anne’s County Economic Development Manager at 410.604.2100.

In November 2010, when 59-year-old Debra Mende started experiencing short episodes when she could not speak, she knew something was wrong. Her primary care physician immediately followed up on the symptoms and learned from an MRI and CT scan that Mende had a lesion about the size of a quarter on the left side of her brain around her speech area. The discovery meant that she needed brain surgery Debra Mende of Centreville visits with immediately to determine the neurosurgeon Kurtom Khalid, MD, who performed a rare surgery that helped diagnature of the tumor. Fortunately for Mende, nosis his patient’s brain tumor. who lives in Centreville, there was an option to have the surgery done in nearby Easton by local neurosururosurgeon Khalid Kurtom, MD. Mende comments, “Dr. Kurtom is a very nice ce physician and values family in his practice. He wanted to meet my family ily and explain everything to them. That meant a lot to my family, especially ally my husband, as they wanted me to go over the Bridge for my surgery. Once ce they met Dr. Kurtom, they knew I didn’t need to do that. In order to diagnose Mende’s tumor, Dr. Kurtom had to perform orm an awake craniotomy. In this technically demanding surgical procedure, the he surgeon exposes the brain while the patient is awake in order to get a tissue sample from the tumor without affecting the patient’s speech areas. The he procedure involves the surgeon performing electrical testing of the surfacee of the brain to determine where the patient’s speech areas are located while doing a biopsy. The patient receives intravenous sedatives to relax and is able to talk throughout the procedure, which lets the surgeon know the exact location ation of the speech area. Dr. Kurtom comments, “The significance of Debra’s story is that hat you see this surgery once every two to three years in a large medical center. er. This was the first awake craniotomy at Memorial Hospital and the first outside ide of a teaching institution in the region. Dr. Kurtom adds, “Debra tolerated the procedure well, with her speech in tact, and we were able to determine the type of cancerous tumor she he has, which will help her in finding the best treatment options. Getting the complete mplete diagnosis to know what type of tumor she has could not have happened d without this procedure. Other benefits of Mende’s procedure were that she had a small all incision and was only hospitalized two days following the surgery. Since the surgery, she has seen physicians who are helping her manage the cancer, which is predicted to be treatable and slow growing. Mende, who was back to work five weeks after her brain surgery, comments, “Dr. Kurtom was very confident in how he approached my surgery, which gave me confidence in fighting this disease. Since my surgery, two of my friends have been operated on by Dr. Kurtom. He is making an impact here. Dr. Kurtom specializes in brain and spinal chord tumor management as well as minimally invasive spinal surgeries. Patients needing these advanced operations now have the option to receive treatment close to home. Dr. Kurtom’s focus on complete tumor resection, when possible, through minimally invasive approaches, is important and attractive to patients seeking care for these types of lesions. Dr, Kurtom practices at Chesapeake Neurosurgical Services, 401 Purdy Street, Suite 204, in Easton. For more information or to make an appointment, call 410-820-9117 or visit www.cnseaston.com.

News In Brief Brought to You By MARYLAND BOND RATING SECURE Maryland’s triple-A bond rating is secure with Standard & Poor. Treasurer Nancy Kopp says she and Comptroller Peter Franchot believe all the rating agencies will see something positive with Maryland’s fiscal management. NO CHANGE TO HARVEST RESTRICTIONS Watermen who work the Chesapeake Bay will not be happy since it appears harvest restrictions are not likely to change. The latest assessment of the Bay’s crab population says the Bay needs more female crabs to reach the population targets. Apparently it will be at least another year before anyone seriously sits down and reconsiders that position. WALMART OR TARGET IN FUTURE? Queen Anne’s Commissioners passed the ‘big box amendment’ by a vote of 3 to 2, making way for a Walmart or Target. The amendment removes the space restrictions on land, meaning that almost any size building can be erected. Residents generally were opposed, and local businesses say this may be the end for them. FORMER MARYLAND FIRST LADY DIES Memorial services were held former first lady Matilda Lee. She was the wife of Governor Blair Lee who took over when Governor Marvin Mandel was indicted for racketeering. Matilda Lee died at the age of 91. ROCKFISH REGULATIONS The Department of Natural Resources plans to give lawmakers proposed changes to rockfish netting regulations after many tons of rockfish were discovered in illegal nets near Kent Island. Proposals include a “fishing plan” where anglers would file with DNR to tell them where

BOATER DROWNS ON WESTERN SIDE OF BRIDGE Another boater’s body was recovered on the western side of the Bay Bridge. Fifty-two year old Dean Dixon of Harwood disappeared while boating on the West River. Dixon’s body was found not far from where his boat came to rest on the river bank. There was no word on cause of death, but investigators are not ruling out a medical emergency. O’MALLEY AND MARKELL PARTNER Governor O’Malley and Delaware Governor Markell have made it official: they announced a joint informationsharing effort involving violent offenders. The partnership will allow parole and probation officials and law enforcement in both states to exchange arrest information, such as parolee violations. QUEENSTOWN BOAT FIRE A boat fire in Queenstown caused approximately $10,000 in damage to a 21-foot Seaswhirl White Striper. The fire apparently started in the boat’s interior, but no word yet on the cause. Investigators are asking anyone with information should call the fire marshal’s office at 410822-7609.

The Walk of Angels By Sandra Zunino A prayer, an encouraging word, the gift of a warm, soft blanket: these minor gestures can bring a ray of light in an otherwise dark time for a cancer patient. Such is the mission of Cancer Comfort Angels, a non-profit Christian-based group in Queen Anne’s County. Founded by Laurie Rasinski of Chester, Cancer Comfort Angels provides a simple act of kindness in the form of comfort kits. Each kit includes a handmade blanket, a cross, words of prayer to let the patient know he or she is not alone, and a small poem to offer inspiration and hope beyond the clinical prognosis. Laurie, who was diagnosed with stage-four breast cancer in 2008, was the first unofficial recipient of a blanket - a simple gift that started a domino effect helping more than 75 cancer victims to date. “A very sweet teenager gave me the first blanket when I was diagnosed,” says Laurie, “and I was so overwhelmed and touched by the love that someone could give me in this simple gesture, that I, in turn, wanted to do something for other people.” Laurie began writing poetry as a way to help cope with the ongoing struggles inherent with cancer treatment. Consequently, all the poems in the comfort kits are her own works. A blanket committee makes the fleece blankets that are especially soft, as cancer treatments often cause the patient to become over-sensitive to any tactile stimulation.

Page 15

Since then, Laurie has been invited to give speeches about her personal fight with cancer and how she manages to maintain a positive outlook throughout her treatment. “People always say, Laurie, you give a different face to cancer,” she says. “I think I’m here to be encouraging and to show that I understand the pain as well as let people know they have to make the most of every day.” While Laurie says she has always been involved with community service, with the challenges she faces with her own ongoing treatment, she acknowledges she could not have brought Cancer Comfort Angels into fruition without the help of her close friends. After making inquiries as to the best approach for launching the non-profit endeavor, Laurie decided to align with the Foundation for Community Partnerships. A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the Foundation for Community Partnerships takes donations from willing contributors and expands the potential funding options to include foundations, Federal Government grants, individual contributions, corporate sponsors, etc. The Foundation enables people with philanthropic interests to easily Cancer is not right or wrong. and effectively support the issues they care It doesn’t own you. about. MAKING NEWS Market Points to Home Buying Opportunity Recent fluctuations in home prices have created a great opportunity for home buyers here in Stevensville according to recent market trends. We have seen an increase in buyer activity in our market. Sellers are happy with this recent upswing in showing of their homes & with interest rates even lower it truly is a great time to buy your dream home. “A lot of people are taking advantage of these conditions and are being rewarded by finding homes in areas that have in the past been difficult to find inventory,” remarked Debbie Houck, Broker, of EXIT Gold Realty. “What a great time to buy a home.” Many homeowners have gone beyond thinking about moving, to spending some time with a REALTOR® to find a home that best fits their current needs. “We’re in a bit of a window right now,” Houck remarked. “I’m pleased with the quality of the homes available to show my clients.”

(ARA) - If you owe more on your home than its current market value, you may feel tempted to walk away from a bad investment, even if you can afford to make the monthly mortgage payment. * Defaulting on your mortgage is the second most damaging thing you can do to your credit, even if you continue to pay your other bills. Only bankruptcy will affect your credit score more adversely than foreclosure.

* Foreclosure remains on your credit report for seven years. During that time, securing other credit at reasonable terms and rates will be very difficult, if not impossible.

* Potential employers are looking at credit reports. In fact, 60 percent now check applicants’ credit reports, according to an article in the Washington Times. By impacting your credit, a strategic default may affect your ability to get a job.

ONLY $499,000

* Last year, Fannie Mae, the government-controlled mortgage giant, said it would implement a policy to prohibit strategic defaulters from getting a new Fannie Mae-backed mortgage for seven years from the date of foreclosure. * Finally, in some cases, the debt that foreclosure “erases” may be recorded as income, which means you will have to pay taxes on it.
