AJ’s Driving School Welcome to Langlade County 4-H. In its early years, 4-H was an agricultural program for farm families. Today, 4-H is for every family, urban and rural. In Langlade County, the 4-H tradition of animal husbandry is as strong today as it was in 1912, with programs in dairy, beef, sheep, swine, horses, rabbits, cats, dogs, and poultry. Along with those familiar projects, there is now a wide variety of activities in which 4-H’ers can participate, including archery, photography, creative writing, clothing, woodworking, computers, trash and treasure, scale models, electricity, aerospace, cake decorating, small engines, theater arts, and much more (over 40 active projects in all). Who can join 4-H? 4-H is open to everyone, regardless of race, religion, color, disability, gender, or place of residence. Members of 4-H can be any boy or girl from kindergarten through 13th grade (one year out of high school). Leaders of 4-H can be any adult who completes the Youth Protection Process (including background check, training, and orientation). How do you join 4-H? To enroll call the UW-Extension office at 627-6236 to ask about projects offered, and local clubs in the area. Or, stop by in person, at 837 Clermont Street in Antigo, to fill out a Member Enrollment Form. Who provides leadership for 4-H? The U.S. Department of Agriculture oversees the Cooperative Extension Service of the University of Wisconsin, which in turn sponsors 4-H. The UW-Extension system works with the local leaders of every county, to ensure that 4-H is the right educational fit for the needs of each community. Why do youth today enjoy 4-H? They “learn by doing,” and the activities are as fun as they are educational. They belong to a community of other learners. They lead their own way, and learn skills that will take them to the next level. They explore the possibilities, and take responsibility for
their futures. Their successes are shared and displayed every year at state and county fairs. Their leadership experiences are enhanced at regional and national conferences. What does the name “4-H” mean? The four h’s stand for: head, heart, hands, and health. The 4-H pledge is, “I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to greater service, and my health to better living, for my club, my community, my country, and my world.” Research has proven that participation in 4-H has a significant positive impact on young people. Recent findings from the Tufts University 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development indicate that, when compared to their peers, young people in 4-H are: • Nearly 4 times more likely to contribute to their communities, • Two times more likely to pursue healthy behaviors like, and • Two times more likely to engage in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs in the out-of-school time. Also during National 4-H Week, hundreds of thousands of youth from all around the nation will complete a single, innovative experiment on 4-H National Youth Science Day, which will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013. The 2013 National Science Experiment, 4-H Maps & Apps, will introduce youth to the importance of geographic information systems (GIS) and geographic positioning systems (GPS) as they design and map their ideal park, use mapping to solve community problems and contribute data to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) The National Map program as citizen scientists through The National Map Corps project. Each year, more than 4,000 Americans die in fires, more than 25,000 are injured in fires, and more than 100 firefighters are killed while on duty. Eighty three percent of all civilian fire deaths occurred in residences. Many of these fires could have been prevented. FIRE PREVENTION TIPS BEFORE A FIRE The following are things you can do to protect yourself, your family, and your property in the event of a fire: SMOKE ALARMS AND CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS • Install smoke alarms. Properly working smoke alarms decrease your chances of dying in a fire by half. • Place smoke alarms on every level of your residence, including the basement. • Install a working carbon monoxide detector in the common area of the bedrooms. • Test and clean smoke alarms once a month and replace batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms once every 10 years. COOKING SAFETY • Never leave cooking unattended. • Always wear short or tight-fitting sleeves when you cook. • Keep towels, pot holders and curtains away from flames • Never use the range or oven to heat your home. ESCAPING THE FIRE • Have an escape plan. Review escape routes with your family. • Make sure windows are not nailed or painted shut. • Teach family members to stay low to the floor, where the air is safer, when escaping from a fire. • In high-rise, never lock fire exits or doorways, halls or stairways. Never prop stairway or other fire doors open. HEATING SOURCE • Place space heaters at least three feet away from flammable/combustible materials. • Use only the type of fuel designated for your space heater.

MATCHES/LIGHTERS AND SMOKING • Keep matches/lighters away from children. • Never smoke in bed or when drowsy or medicated. • If you must smoke, do it responsibly. ELECTRICAL WIRING • Inspect extension cords for frayed or exposed wires or loose plugs • Make sure outlets have cover plates and no exposed wiring. • Make sure wiring does not run under rugs, over nails, or across high traffic areas. • Do not overload extension cords or outlets. DURING A FIRE If your clothes catch on fire, you should: • Stop, drop, and roll until the fire is extinguished. DO NOT PANIC • Do not assume someone else already called the fire department get out of the house then call the Fire Department.

ESCAPE A FIRE • Check closed doors with the back of your hand to feel for heat before you open them. • If the door is hot do not open it. Find a second way out, such as a window. If you cannot escape through a window, hang a white sheet outside the window to alert firefighters to your presence. • Stuff the cracks around the door with towels, rags, bedding or tape and cover vents to keep smoke out. • If there is a phone in the room where you are trapped, call the fire department again and tell them exactly where you are. • If the door is cold slowly open it and ensure that fire and/or smoke is not blocking your escape route. If your escape route is blocked, shut the door and use another escape route. • If clear, leave immediately and close the door behind you. Be prepared to crawl.

Final 2014 Ice Age Trail hike in Langlade County scheduled for October 4th
The final 2014 hike on the Ice Age National Scenic Trail in Langlade County will take place Saturday, October 4. The event will serve as a local annual observance of National Trails Day held earlier this summer in other parts of the country. The special day is organized each year by trail groups to observe the October 2, 1968 signing of the National Trails Act by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Interested persons and groups should meet at 9 am in front of the Langlade County Forestry Office at the fairgrounds. Charter membership or fees are not required as the outing is open to the public. Hikers are encouraged to wear suitable clothing and bring a lunch for the early fall stroll. Transportation to the trailhead northeast of Antigo will be carpooling from the fairgrounds. The hike will be a five mile round trip on the Kettle Bowl segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail northeast of Polar. The segment includes scenic high ridges and large kettles formed by ice chunks lodged in the landscape by the retreating continental glacier over 10,000 years ago. The hike will also include a stop at the historic Norem Sheep Ranch which once flourished in the Polar area. An added feature for outing participants will be the awarding of a 40th anniversary hiker patch. The hike will be the final opportunity to earn the patch for persons who participated in at least one of the other charter outings held in 2013 or this year. Consumer-Friendly Changes for Wisconsin’s Do Not Call Program
Submitted by: Kathy Schultz, Elder Benefit Specialist Aging & Disability Resource Center of Central Wisconsin Consumers may not notice the difference right away, but big changes are just around the bend for Wisconsin’s Do Not Call program. As of August 1, Wisconsin consumers are no longer required to register their numbers every two years to receive protection under state law from unwanted telemarketing calls and text messages, and new registrations will be active the following day rather than the next quarter. “The changes to the state’s Do Not Call law will benefit consumers,” said Sandy Chalmers, Division Administrator for Trade and Consumer Protection. “Consumers can sign up once and not have to worry about whether their registrations will lapse or whether there will be a three-month delay before they are protected under the program.” Changes in the state’s Do Not Call law will make phone numbers on the Wisconsin Do Not Call Registry permanent by moving the registration process to the Federal Trade Commission’s nationwide list. Phone numbers on the previous Wisconsin list will automatically be transferred to the federal list. If a Wisconsin consumer has previously registered their number to the federal list, they do not need to re-register for protection under the new law. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) will continue to enforce the state’s Do Not Call laws, protecting Wisconsin residents registered on the federal list. The following changes to Wisconsin’s Do Not Call law are effective next month: • Wisconsin residents no longer have to sign up every two years. If you answer the phone and hear a recorded message instead of a live person, it’s a robocall. You may have received robocalls about candidates running for office or from charities asking for donations. These robocalls are allowed under the law. But if the recording is a sales message and you have not given your permission to get calls from the company on the other end, the call is illegal and the pitch is most likely is a scam. “It’s relatively cheap and easy for a criminal to call you from anywhere in the world,” said Chalmers. “Don’t send money in response to a robocall that violates state and federal law, because it’s most likely a fraudulent pitch as well.” If you receive an illegal robocall: Hang up the phone. Do not press a key to speak to a live operator or to get your number removed from their list. If you respond by pressing any number, it will likely lead to more robocalls. Consider contacting your phone provider and asking them to block the number. Some providers may charge for that service. Remember that telemarketers change caller ID information easily and often, so it might not be worth paying a fee to block a number that may change. Review smartphone features that allow you to block or redirect calls, or consider a third-party app that identifies and blocks robocalls. Report the violation to DATCP online or call 1-800-4227128 to request a complaint form by mail.
