Appreciation Week We want to thank the most important people at Karl’s Transport, our drivers. It is so hard to put into words the gratitude we have for each one of them and their families. They are road warriors, the eyes and ears of our great nation, sales, customer service, recruiting and advertising, all in one. We have great customers because we have great drivers. We get so many compliments and emails on our drivers. Their great attitudes, their safe driving, their professional appearance, their on time deliveries and I could go on and on. These drivers are out for days, away from their families, putting up with weather, construction, impaired drivers, people on their phones or texting and a government who seems to think they can run the trucking industry better than they can. Truck drivers are the backbone of this country and without them this country would be crippled. We are blessed with the best drivers out there!!! We are so grateful that God has sent all of you to Karl’s. To have the caliber of drivers that we have is more than we could have ever dreamed. Our office and shop is truly phenomenal. They always make sure that our drivers have the best and safest equipment possible and that the load they are taking is to a place they want to go. The trucking industry is a 24 hour 7 days a week job for them. Trucking is very competitive and is very stressful, your long hours do not go unnoticed. As a boss to have such an extraordinary office and shop is priceless. We are so blessed!!! In this industry it truly is a team effort and we have great team players! Starting with our drivers, our customers, dispatch, to the shop that makes sure the truck is ready to go, to the departments that do their paperwork, to the girls who clean, to Uncle Bob who mows the lawn, our company is truly a great team. It never ceases to amaze me when one is going through a tough time how everyone pulls together. We know that God is the head over everything and we are so grateful that he has sent each one of you to Karl’s. Nothing is by accident. When you see one of our trucks or any truck on the road please wave and say a prayer for them and their families. Many of them have served and protected us in the military and now as a road warrior. You wouldn’t have what you have all around you without them. Thank you and God Bless our Karl’s family and God Bless America. You all are truly the best. Karl, Jil, Hannah, Karleemae & Eden

AUGUSTYN SPRINGS TRAIL: The Augustyn Springs Trail is approximately 20 miles of rolling to very hilly terrain. Parking is on Highway A, 8 miles northeast of Neva. PARRISH HIGHLANDS TRAIL: This 55 mile trail meets up with the Lincoln County ATV trail system. There are three parking areas for the Parrish/Highlands trail. Highway Q, at the Oneida/Langlade County line; Highway H, 2 miles south of Highway 17/Q; and Highway T, 3 miles west of Highway 45 in Summit Lake. PICKEREL/PEARSON ATV TRAIL: Located between Post Lake & Pickerel, this trail connects the Parrish/Highlands ATV trail and the Augustyn Springs ATV trail. This trail runs along either side of Rolling Stone Lake, and along the east side of Pickerel Lake. WHITE LAKE ATV TRAIL: The White Lake ATV trail is one of the shortest trails in the area. Parking is available in two places, Sherry Road, 1.25 miles north of Highway 64 in Polar; and Highway M/Maple Street, in downtown White Lake. An additional section that connects with Oconto County trails, on Highway 55 just south of Hollister, WI.

Oconto County: The Nicolet State Trail in Oconto County begins in the town of Gillett near the Oconto/Shawano county line. In Suring, a parking area with access to the trail is available next to the Village Hall near State Highway 32. Beginning around Mountain, the trail parallels Highway 32 the rest of the way north into Forest County. FOREST COUNTY ATV TRAIL: The Forest County Forestry Department maintains an eight-mile public ATV trail on County Forest land. A loading dock is available at the trailhead parking area. Please stay on the trail, follow the brown ATV trail markers, and use caution and appropriate speeds. Driving beyond the borders of the ATV area onto private land is ILLEGAL and may result in permanent trail closure and fines. The Nicolet National Forest is closed to ATV use. Use of this trail is a privilege. Please respect the rights of neighboring landowners and other trail users. People who love fall colors and love Wisconsin’s state parks, forests, trails and recreation areas can share that love by entering their photos of people enjoying state properties this fall in an upcoming “Fall in Love with Wisconsin State Parks” Facebook photo contest. The DNR will launch a Fall in Love with Wisconsin State Parks photo contest on Facebook Sept. 15. At the same time they will be helping to promote the State Park System as the Department of Natural Resources. All photos entered into the contest become the property of the DNR and may be used in publications and brochures, and on the DNR website and social media outlets. “Wisconsin residents and visitors alike love our state properties and fall colors,” said DNR Secretary Cathy Stepp. “This is an opportunity to share their enjoyment of Wisconsin in the fall by entering their photos and letting Facebook users vote on their favorites.” The contest will run from September 15 through October 26, 2014. Photographers who submit photos early will to get the chance to receive the most votes. People can check on updates on fall color progress through the Department of Tourism’s fall color report. To enter photos, people should go to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Facebook page and click the “Like” button. Once you are a “Fan” of the Wisconsin DNR’s Facebook page, enter photos by clicking the “Photo Contest” box on the left side of the page. Fans can enter up to one photo per day. Photographers must be at least 13 years of age, and have the permission of anyone pictured in the photos to have their image submitted to the contest with the understanding that the photo may be used in publications, brochures or online. Photographers must also identify the property where the photo was taken. A complete set of Fall in Love With Wisconsin State Parks contest rules [PDF] is available on the DNR website. A list of all Wisconsin state parks, forests, recreation areas and trails is available by searching the DNR website for “find a park.” DNR Facebook fans will then be able to vote once a day for their favorite photos from the contest gallery. Whichever photo has the most votes by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, October 26, 2014 will be deemed the winner, and the photographer will receive a 2015 Wisconsin State Park sticker, a 2015 Wisconsin trails pass, and a two year subscription to Wisconsin Natural Resources Magazine. GOD WILL GIVE YOU REST I had not been able to sleep more than 1 ½ to 3 hours per night for the last 5 years. Recently I have gone several nights unable to sleep at all. The last 4 weeks I had only slept a total of 29 hours for that period of time. I put a prayer request on Facebook, which resulted in numerous responses with both suggestions and prayers. That very night I slept for 5 hours straight for the first time in years. Thank you Lord for giving me the rest I need daily.

Relief for Chronic Hip Pain Non-Surgical Treatment Now Available in Antigo Do your hips hurt? Does the pain gnaw at you during the day or keep you up at night?

Exercising outside of the box-Simple ways to incorporate exercise into your daily routine

Exercise is an essential element of a healthy lifestyle. When coupled with a healthy diet, exercise puts men and women on a path toward optimal health while reducing risk for a host of ailments, some of which can be deadly. But many people find they simply don’t have the time to exercise regularly. Commitments to career and family can be demanding and time-consuming, and exercise is often a casualty of a hectic schedule. Though getting to the gym every day or even making use of exercise equipment at home on a daily basis may not be feasible, that doesn’t mean people still can’t find ways to incorporate a little exercise into their daily routines. The following are a few simple ways to fit more exercise into your day no matter how busy you may be. • Avoid the elevator, and attack the stairs. The elevator may be inviting, but it’s also somewhat of an enabler. Instead of taking the elevator up to your office each day, take the stairs, and take them with more gusto than you’re used to. Rather than taking one step at a time, take the stairs two by two, lifting your legs high as you scale each pair of steps. This helps build your leg muscles and makes the daily climb up the staircase a little more strenuous. • Turn TV time into treadmill time. Watching a little television at night is how many people relax and unwind, but it can be a great time to squeeze in some daily exercise as well. Opinions as to what’s the best time of day to exercise vary, and no definitive study exists to suggest one time of day is better than another. People who like to relax with a little television time at night should make the most of that time by hitting the treadmill, elliptical machine or exercise bike instead of just plopping down on the couch. Add a television to your home’s exercise room or purchase a gym membership where the cardiovascular machines are connected to televisions. You will still get to enjoy your favorite shows while simultaneously getting the benefit of exercise. • Say “bon voyage” to the conference room. Professionals who spend lots of time in meetings can add a simple twist that incorporates exercise into a typical business meeting. Rather than conducting the meeting in a conference room, propose a walking meeting when possible. A walking meeting is the same as a standard business meeting, but it’s conducted on foot outside of the office. Walking meetings can provide some much-needed energy for you and your fellow staff members, who may appreciate the chance to get out from behind their desks and stretch their legs while still getting work done. Take your smartphones or tablets along to jot down important ideas, just like you would in a more traditional meeting. And make the most of your walk by leaving time for some light stretching before and after the meeting. Chances are you will return to your desk reenergized and glad you found a way to get some exercise despite of a busy schedule. • Park far away when shopping. It’s tempting and almost human nature to hunt for the parking spot closest to the door when shopping at the mall or even the grocery store. But for those who want to include more exercise in their daily routines, parking far away from the entrance to your favorite store is a great way to incorporate more walking into your life. Walking is a simple yet effective cardiovascular exercise, one that the Mayo Clinic notes can lower your blood pressure and manage your weight while lowering your low-density lipoprotein, which is commonly referred to as “bad” cholesterol. In fact, research has indicated that regular, brisk walking can be just as effective at lowering a person’s risk of heart attack as more vigorous exercise, including jogging. When parking far away from the entrance, just make sure you park in a well-lit area where others can easily see or hear you. Many adults find they simply don’t have the time to commit to routine exercise. But there are several simple ways to incorporate exercise into your existing routine without taking time from your already busy day.

I’ve had hip pain since 2004. I’ve visited 3 orthopedic surgeons, a few physical therapists, and 2 other chiropractors over the past several years without finding much relief. After just one treatment with Dr. Draeger, I had far more mobility and much less pain than I’d had in 10 years. I continued getting adjustments and laser therapy, because they’ve enabled me to keep up with my 4 kids and do things I had not been able to do in a long time.

Winterize to safeguard your home from harsh weather

Autumn is a beautiful time of year marked by welcoming cooler temperatures and the natural beauty of leaves changing colors. Autumn also has a tendency to fly by, as if the powerful weather of winter simply cannot wait to make its presence felt. With such a seemingly short time between the end of summer and the dawn of winter, homeowners know they don’t have too many weekends in between to prepare their homes for the potentially harsh months ahead. But such preparation, often referred to as “winterizing,” can make a home more comfortable when the mercury dips below freezing, while saving homeowners substantial amounts of money along the way. • Clean the gutters. Leaves falling in fall can be a beautiful sight to behold, but many of those leaves are likely finding their way into your gutters, where they can lodge and cause a host of problems

Tuesday, September 16, 2014

down the road. If the leaves and additional debris, such as twigs and dirt, that pile up in your gutters are not cleared out before the first winter storm, the results can be costly and even catastrophic. Winter rain and snowfall needs a place to go upon hitting your roof, and gutters facilitate the travel of such precipitation from your roof into street-level drainage systems. If gutters are backed up with leaves and other debris, then ice dams may form, forcing water to seep in through the roof. That damage can be costly and can even cause the roof to collapse inward in areas with heavy snowfall. Clean gutters throughout the fall, especially if your property has many trees, and be sure to check gutters one last time before the arrival of winter. • Tend to your attic. Homeowners who have attics in their homes might want to add some extra insulation up there, especially those who recall feeling cold inside their homes last winter, which is often a telltale sign of improper insulation in a home. A good rule of thumb when determining if your attic needs more insulation is to look for the ceiling joists. If you can see the joists, then you need more insulation. • Address leaky windows and doors. Sometimes attic insulation is

not the culprit when it comes to a cold home. Oftentimes, leaky windows and doors are the real bad guys in a drafty home. Fall is a great time to inspect for leaky windows and doors, as the wind outside can serve as your partner. When the wind outside is blowing, take a tour of your home’s windows and doorways, standing next to them to determine if there any holes or leaks that are letting outdoor air inside. If you notice any leaks beneath exterior doors, install some door sweeps to keep outdoor air where it belongs. Leaks around windows can be snuffed out with caulk or weather stripping. • Test the furnace. Homeowners typically do not devote much thought to their furnaces in spring, summer and fall. But with winter on the horizon, fall is the time to test the furnace to make sure it’s ready for the months ahead. Expect a somewhat foul yet brief odor to appear when starting the furnace. That odor should dissipate shortly, but if it does not go away, then your furnace is likely in need of repair. But even if the smell does not stick around, you might want to have the furnace cleaned by a professional anyway. Such cleanings ensure the furnace works efficiently throughout the winter. • Clean the garage. You might not mind parking in the driveway during the warmer months of the year, but why subject your vehicles to harsh winter weather if you don’t have to? Clean the garage in the fall so you have an indoor parking spot throughout the winter season. Protecting your car from the elements can add years to its life and also saves you the trouble of digging your car out of the snow. Fall is a time of year for homeowners to spend a weekend or two preparing their homes for the often harsh weather that awaits when winter arrives.

Get the 411 on flooring Choosing the right flooring for a home is no small task. Flooring is expensive, so homeowners want to make the best decision possible so their choice of flooring is not one they regret and ultimately replace in the years to come. When choosing flooring for their homes, many homeowners are overwhelmed by the options at their disposal. Each type of flooring can look great in its own way, which is why homeowners may struggle to find the right fit for their homes. Educating yourself about flooring is a great way to make the process of choosing your next floor much less overwhelming and more enjoyable. The following are some of the more popular flooring options you will no doubt encounter as your search for a flawless floor begins. Hardwood Nearly everyone is familiar with hardwood floors, which are durable, warm and a favorite of homeowners aiming for a traditional look. Homes with open floor plans often benefit from hardwood flooring, as it creates the feeling of continuity that homeowners hope to achieve with open floor plans. Various species, including oak, maple and cherry, of hardwood flooring are available, and they typically vary in price, with more exotic imported options carrying hefty price tags. More traditional hardwood flooring is less expensive, and solid wood flooring can be refinished several times to increase its lifespan. Engineered wood Engineered wood is less susceptible to temperature changes and humidity than solid wood, and some new varieties of engineered wood include substrates made from recycled wood fiber and stone dust, which may appeal to eco-friendly homeowners. Men and women who want to install their own floors may prefer engineered wood, which is now available in self-locking parquet or plank squares that can be installed without using glue or nails. Bamboo Bamboo is another flooring alternative that’s popular among eco-conscious homeowners, as it comes from plants that regenerate quickly and is therefore considered a sustainable material. Bamboo flooring is made of strands of bamboo that are glued together, forming engineered planks or solid strips. Bamboo flooring is strong and able to resist the negative effects of fluctuating humidity, which include swelling and contraction. Many people prefer the fresh, bright feel of bamboo flooring. Laminate Laminate flooring is among the less expensive flooring materials to buy and install. Homeowners who purchase laminate flooring have an array of options to choose from, and floating laminate flooring systems can be installed over existing floors without glue or nails. Some feel laminate flooring is indistinguishable from real wood, but the plastic coating that makes up the top layer of laminate flooring is often a giveaway that the floors are laminate and not real wood. Similar in construction to engineered wood, laminate flooring differs because its top layer is a photographic imprint on the face of each board, whereas engineered wood is made up of real hardwood veneer attached to several layers of plywood. Cork Cork is another sustainable flooring material that’s a favorite among homeowners looking to make their homes more eco-friendly. The appearance of cork floors is unlike many flooring materials, as it is speckled thanks to unusual grain patterns of the trees from which it is harvested. Cork flooring is popular in kitchens and bathrooms because cork tiles have a naturally nonslip surface that makes areas of a home where floors get wet safer. Cork flooring may need to be resealed every few years to guard against stains and potential moisture issues. Flooring choices vary greatly, and it’s easy for homeowners to become overwhelmed by all of the options at their disposal. But taking time to understand each of those options can make the process of choosing a floor that much more fun.

Handy tips for revitalizing paneled rooms

Paneling is a low-cost way to cover problem walls. In the 1960s and 1970s, paneling was very popular. Sold in large panels, paneling was relatively easy to hang, and quickly became a staple of dens and finished basements. But few of today’s homeowners are enamored with the look of faux wood paneling. Those who purchase homes that have paneling on the walls often search for ways to transform the look of rooms in which the walls are covered in paneling. While paneling does go up quickly, removing it may not be as simple. Explore these options for giving paneled walls a new look. Paint over the paneling The fastest way to breathe new life into a paneled room is to paint over the paneling. The texture of the paneling will show from beneath, giving the room appeal without the dark hue of the wood or veneer panels. Consult with a paint store or home

improvement center to determine the most effective way to cover up paneling with paint. Sometimes it is wise to lightly scuff the paneling with a fine-grit sandpaper so that the paint will adhere. Shiny or glossed paneling can be dulled with a de-glossing product. Sometimes a combination of a thick primer and color will grip the paneling and reduce the number of coats needed to cover it. Also, invest in a high-quality, professional-grade paint. It may cost a bit more, but such paint will be well worth it when it glides over the paneling, covering it completely. If you don’t want the grooves showing between the panels, fill them in with spackle and sand down to create a smooth surface before painting. Cover the paneling Covering up the paneling is another tactic. Rather than coating the wall in paint, consider a wallpaper liner. Liners are essentially a thick, plain wallpaper that is applied on top of the paneling or used when dealing with damaged walls. In lieu of tearing down the walls and putting up new drywall, the liner will cover imperfections. Many of these products can be painted directly and may not require priming beforehand. This can be great for homeowners whose goal is to cover paneling quickly and easily. Those who prefer a patterned look on the walls can opt to cover paneling with a printed wallpaper. However, depending on the thickness of the wallpaper, this may be a two-step process. You may need to fill in the creases between the panels first, or first use a thick wallpaper liner to create a seamless surface. Cut the paneling If you desire a cottage or country look in a room, remove half of the paneling, leaving the bottom portion intact. Then place molding or a chair rail where you made your cut, creating

a wainscoting effect. The top portion of the wall can be painted, while the bottom portion can be left as the wood color or painted a complementary color. Remove the paneling The most labor-intensive way to give a paneled room a new look is to remove the paneling. Pry at a portion of the paneling in an inconspicuous spot in the room to determine which method was used to install the paneling. Some people only tack it into place with small, finishing nails, while others glue the paneling to the wall for a secure installation. Glue will be much more difficult to remove and could further damage the walls and paneling in the process. If the paneling is too difficult to remove, covering or painting it may be a smarter option. Small nails can be removed by pulling at the panels. Spackle holes before painting over the walls. Paneling is an inexpensive decorating option that was first popularized 40 years ago. Though less popular now, paneling still shows up in homes and can be remedied with some relatively easy tips.

Budget-friendly bathroom transformation tips

The cost of creating a luxury washroom is more than many homeowners’ budgets can withstand. Fortunately, a dream bathroom does not have to break the bank. There are several ways to make a bathroom worthy of the most comforting spa without stretching your budget. • Install a wall-hung mirror. If your idea of a luxury bathroom harkens back to a time before the advent of recessed medicine cabinets, then a wall-hung mirror can give the bathroom an entirely new feel without much of a financial commitment. Flush-mount mirrors need not require the services of a contractor, but they can provide a sense of elegance that recessed cabinets cannot. • Replace bathroom countertops. A countertop replacement job may sound expensive, but such an undertaking is not very costly in the washroom, where counter space is typically limited. Since the cost of countertop materials is by the square foot, you can replace bathroom surfaces for a relatively small amount of money. Granite countertops can be beautiful, but such surfaces do not create the warm feel that many prefer in a luxury bathroom. A material such as soapstone is warm and inexpensive and can quickly give the bathroom a new look.

Handyman John Rolling

Section B Page 5

• Embrace calm colors. Painting the bathroom is another inexpensive way to give the room an entirely new look. If the walls of your washroom are currently a vibrant color, consider a more calming tone to give the room the luxurious and relaxing feel you’re aiming for. • Transform your double vanity. Many homeowners prefer a double vanity in their bathrooms, as such a setup allows both men and women the space to get ready for bed or work without getting in one another’s way. But instead of a traditional vanity with a counter between the sinks, consider installing matching pedestal sinks to surround an antique washstand. This can give the washroom a feel of antique luxury, and such washstands can found for a few hundred dollars. • Replace old fixtures. Though they are often overlooked, cabinet and door fixtures as well as towel racks can greatly influence the feel of a washroom. If the cabinet and drawer handles are old or outdated, replace them with more modern options. Such a job might be even more effective if you repaint or reface existing cabinetry. Neither task is terribly expensive, but both can give the washroom a more luxurious feel. The same goes for replacing old towel racks, which can be an eyesore if they’re especially dated. Transforming a bathroom may seem like a significant and costly undertaking, but savvy homeowners can give their washrooms a new and luxurious look without spending much money.
