2014 Labor Day Payday Contest

Winner of the 2014 Labor Day Payday random drawing: Nominee: Joel Zalewski Nominee’s Employer: Servco FS Nominated By: Mary Beth Zalewski Joel is the hardest working man I have ever met. He is currently in a management position at the fertilizer plant, however he has worked in all positions by choice. His work always waits until last. He helps out with bagging fertilizer, and everything else when it’s busy or someone isn’t feeling the best. He remembers every detail every employee shares with him, be it a birthday, upcoming wedding/event or even something personal. He takes the time to really be there for his staff, no matter what he has going on. Ask anybody that knows him and I’m willing to bet you will get a similar response. If you ask him, he would probably say it’s just part of the job. I can’t think of anybody that deserves a little recognition more than Joel. 2014 Labor Day Payday Nominees Nominee: Joseph Peter Nominee’s Employer: St. Mary’s / Crandon Rescue Area

Tuesday, September 9, 2014

Nominated By: Angelia Peter Joe not only has a full time phlebotomist position at St. Mary’s hospital in Rhinelander but he is on the Crandon area rescue team as an EMT, and also volunteers at the Newbold Fire Dept. He is always caring for others and helping in any way that he can. Joe is also enrolled at Northcentral Tech. in Antigo to continue in his education for advanced EMT. He is constantly busy but still makes time for his family, especially his son David, and his friends. Nominee: Thomas Turner Nominee’s Employer: ACE Heating & Refrigeration, LLC Nominated By: Heather Turner He started his own business 11 years ago with a van and few supplies. It has been just him doing all the heating, cooling, with exception of a few part time people helping. He had a rough go when the economy tanked, but has continued to work hard. He now handles multiple counties for the heating program for Wisconsin. He works long days sometimes not coming home until 10-11 at night, working 7 days a week. He has also done service work and repairs for our elderly and not charged them, instead accepting homemade jams and jellies. He is the hardest working person I know, also the most compassionate person. He takes his work very seriously, and always strives to go above and beyond whenever possible.

Nominee: Frank Jalowiec Nominee’s Employer: Self-employed Nominated By: Sheila Rine My dad deserves to win because he will go out of his way to help anyone out. This may sound like father of the year but I guarantee if you ask anyone, they will agree. My dad is a jack of all trades. He is a licensed electrician. He has built garages, sided houses, fixed plumbing jobs, built decks, does electrical jobs and the list continues. Whenever someone needs something fixed, they will call him as he is usually there the same day or the next to check out the job or to give advice or suggest someone else. He has helped me out in more ways than one. My dad goes over and beyond and I feel he is greatly deserving of this award. He is the most hard-working guy I know (other than my husband) and you would not think he is retired - although he may be tired!

THE ANTIGO AREA SHOPPER

Tuesday, September 9, 2014 has sat by his side day and night taking care of him, helping him relearn how to do things, being there physically, mentally, and emotionally, being his rock. Not only is she the best nurse I know or one of the best people I have ever known, she is the reason I believe my brother made it out alive. She has never left his side. She now juggles the stressful job of being a nurse since she went back to work and taking care of him. I don’t believe there is anyone out there that deserves this more than her. I am honored to call her my best friend and sister-in-law.

20+ years. He will help anyone out if they need it. He is a caring father figure to his nieces and nephews. He is the best brother I could ever have. Always have been there for me, and a son our father is proud of. They have done many projects together. He always stands firm on his two feet and has been a piler in our Antigo community for over 50 years. He also has restored a 1955 Cameo Pickup to original. Won many trophies also a Harley Davidson motorcycle to a beautiful custom look. He is one special man.

Nominee: Jill Hohensee Nominee’s Employer: Antigo Auto Nominated By: Calli Hohensee Jill Hohensee is one of the hardest workers that I know. She gets paid salary from 9-5 Monday-Friday. But in reality because of how much work she has to do all the time, she works 5am-7pm. So she puts in a lot of extra hours for free. Plus she takes work home so she can try and catch up over the weekend for free. Then she had her world turned upside down on May 20th. Her son Travis Hohensee had an unexpected stroke and was minutes away from death. There was absolutely no warning at all. She took a couple days off to be there for his surgery but because of the work she does for the company she couldn’t be there for her family for very long. She’s in charge of payroll and such, so if she didn’t go to work 100’s of people wouldn’t get paid. And she knows how important a pay check is to a lot of families. Then when her son was recovering in the hospital he needed someone there 24/7 and she wanted desperately to be there for her only son but she couldn’t. She could only go there on weekends. It was and still is a very VERY rough time for her and her family. Travis and his wife rent a house that Jill owns and because of all the doctor bills and therapy, they can’t afford much. So she told them not to worry about rent and just worry about getting better. So now she has to pay for her house and their house. Money is very tight for her and she has a daughter in high school and that can get expensive too. The biggest reason why I feel like she deserves win is because she is always willing to give what she can to others but she will NEVER EVER ask for anything from anyone. So she doesn’t get much help. Please consider her for this because she deserves it.

Nominee: Ashley Dieck Nominee’s Employer: Fantastic Sams Nominated By: Travis Dieck She puts in extremely long hours along with being a mom at home.

Nominee: Jeff Ralph Nominee’s Employer: Parsons Nominated By: Mary Fuchs Jeff is a hard-working man at Parsons for 30+ years. He is the president of the Badgerland Classics & Customs Car Club for

If you know my Grandpa he would help you out even if he didn’t know you because that is my Grandpa. He has taught me everything since I was little, they call me Wilson at work, I drive equipment like Grandpa did at the County now that he is retired he still works, helps my boss Jack Kautza when needed helps at the fair 24/7. Runs farm safety for children to learn to drive the tractors safe. When there is an accident on a farm Grandpa goes there and talks to the family and even gives them money. My Grandpa is also so involved with the Honor Flight, which he took last year with his son David Wilson when he talks about it to us Grandpa always chokes up. Grandpa prepared the pork at Lakeside’s pig they brought at the market sale at the fair to help the 4-H children make money. Grandpa is also very active in his church. I know I’m forgetting more things Grandpa does but in my eyes and heart Keith Wilson at 84 is the hardest working person I know. Nominee: DeAna Shestak Nominee’s Employer: Social Services Nominated By: Rachel Pelky DeAna Shestak deserves this award because she has served this county for 8 years helping our people. She has always treated everyone as an equal person to herself, does not look or think ANY lower of ANYONE!

CoVantage and Verne’s Raises over $15,000 for the Boys and Girls Club of Langlade County

CoVantage Credit Union and Verne’s Arctic Cat recently held a fundraising raffle to support the Boys and Girls Club of Langlade County. Credit Union employees sold raffle tickets for a 2014 Arctic Cat Wildcat Trail XT UTV and held a brat fry at Lakeside Grocery in July. Proceeds from the raffle and brat fry totaled over $15,048. For the past fourteen years, CoVantage has sponsored a similar raffle aimed at benefiting a local non-profit group. Since 2000, the Credit Union’s annual raffles have raised over $117,000 for the Boys and Girls Club. The drawing was held August 13th at the Antigo/Langlade County Chamber of Commerce Customer Appreciation Night. The winner of the ATV was Susan Fitzpatrick of Iron River, Michigan. According to Brian Prunty, President/CEO of CoVantage, “Part of our Credit Union mission is to support and give back to the communities we serve. Providing financial assistance to a non-profit organization like the Boys & Girls Club of Langlade County is one of the ways our staff and directors work toward achieving this goal.”

Some people wonder why more and more parents are taking their children to see chiropractors. The answer is simple...

September is

BABY SAFETY MONTH

10 REASONS PARENTS TAKE THEIR CHILDREN TO SEE A CHIROPRACTOR:

1. To encourage good neural plasticity (brain and nerve development). 2. To support “first-class” nerve communication throughout the body to promoting health and wellbeing. 3. To help strengthen their child’s immunity – encouraging fewer colds, ear-aches and general illness. 4. To help resolve breastfeeding issues and colic. 5. To reduce the detrimental impact our modern world has on our children’s health. 6. Encourages children to thrive by supporting digestive strength. 7. To diminish nerve interference which may impact their child’s capacity to learn and concentrate. 8. To promote body balance – helping to resolve poor posture, asthma, allergies and bed-wetting.. 9. To help kids stay fun and light hearted. 10. To help kids stay in tip-top shape.

September is National Baby Safety Month. Here are a few simple tips to help make sure that your baby is safe: SAFE A safe crib has no moving parts • New recommendations have been made by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) for choosing a safe crib. These recommendations include: - Purchasing a crib that is certified by Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association - The slats should be no more than 2-3/8 inches apart, in order to avoid the infant’s head from getting trapped. - The mattress should be the same size of the crib,

Babies can be checked by chiropractors very soon after birth and special techniques have been developed to carefully correct any subluxated areas. Poor nerve communication may result in developmental delays, an inability to concentrate, behavioral problems, digestive issues, asthma, headaches – the list is endless. For babies, this ineffective communication may play out as colic or irritability, an inability to suckle and breastfeed or poor sleep habits. When we appreciate how the nervous system may be hindered and impaired it makes sense why more parents are having their child’s spine and nervous system assessed.

Your child’s health is their greatest asset and chiropractic for children has been shown to be gentle, safe and effective. Did you know...Dr. Amy Stuber has completed additional training for pediactric chiropractic care? Ask around and you will find that parents frequently report chiropractic helps their children stay in tip-top shape. Call to schedule your child’s FREE consultation today!

SIMPLE A simple sleep space keeps your baby safe! • No bumpers. No blankets. No stuffed toys. • Babies have not changed, but the way we put them to sleep has. Remember: A simple crib is a safe crib. SLEEP Babies sleep safest on their backs. • Place babies on their backs to sleep. Deaths due to suffocation and SIDS has decreased by 30-35% just by sharing this message. Babies should have “belly time” during the daytime when you are both very awake, and when they are practicing their crawling skills.

Whether we have a large spine or a tiny little one, if that spine is negatively impacting the communication of the nervous system then our body is unable regulate and co-ordinate itself correctly…

• Inspect your farm on a regular basis for hazards that can injure children wandering on your farm. Correct obvious hazards immediately. • Children who are physically able to be involved in farm work should be assigned age-appropriate tasks and continually trained to perform them. They should also be constantly supervised. • Equip all barns, farm shops, chemical storage areas, livestock pens, etc. with latches that can be locked or secured so that children cannot enter. • Always turn equipment off, lower hydraulics and remove the key before leaving equipment unattended. • Do not expose children to hazards. Never carry them on tractors and equipment or invite them into the farm shop, livestock barns, grain bins, etc.

Important Safety Tips to Remember All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety ATVs have become popular for work and recreation on many farms and ranches. Unfortunately, reported cases of serious injury and death have increased along with their increased use. Most of these injuries and deaths can be attributed to improper use of ATVs. Make ATV safety a priority on your farm or ranch. An ATV is not a toy. Children should not be permitted to operate ATVs without specialized training and then they should be allowed to only operate an ATV of an appropriate size. ATVs with an engine size of 70cc to 90cc should be operated by people at least 12 years of age. • ATVs with an engine size of greater than 90cc should only be operated by people at least 16 years of age. • Wear appropriate riding gear: DOT-, Snell ANSI-approved helmet, goggles, gloves, over-the-ankle boots, long-sleeve shirt and long pants. • Read owners manuals carefully. • ATVs are not made for multiple riders. Never carry anyone else on the ATV. • Any added attachments affect the stability, operating and braking of the ATV. • Just because an attachment is available doesn’t mean that it can be used without increasing your risk of being injured. • Do not operate the ATV on streets, highways or paved roads. Child Safety on the Farm Thousands of children are injured and hundreds are killed every year by hazards found on the farm. Some of these children are working on the farm while others wander into trouble on their own or are invited into hazardous areas. Implement injury prevention strategies today to protect agriculture’s greatest resource, our children. • Do not allow children to roam freely on the farm. Design a fenced “safe play area.” This area should be near the house and away from work activities.

Falls from Tractors and Trailing Equipment Run-overs caused by falls from tractors and trailing equipment are one of the most common forms of unintentional injuries that happen on the farm or ranch. Many of these lead to serious injury and death. Falls from farm machinery are particularly common for the older farmer and children. Falls from machinery can be prevented by adopting these basic practices. • Wear shoes and boots with slip-resistant soles and heels. • Keep platforms, foot-plates and steps clear of mud, snow, manure or other debris. • Before moving, check the tractor and trailing equipment to see that no one has climbed aboard without your knowledge. • Remove tools or other items that may cause a tripping hazard from the operator platform. • Don’t use working farm equipment as a place to baby-sit children. Arrange for proper childcare. • Never allow anyone to ride on the drawbar or towed machinery. • Insist that no one ride on farm equipment except those required for its operation, instruction, or diagnostics. • Reduce speed on rough, uneven or hilly ground. • Watch for obstacles. • Wait for the tractor to stop before getting off. Set brakes and step down using handholds or rails. No one should jump off a moving tractor. • Whenever possible, equip tractors with a Rollover Protective Structure (ROPS) cab. They are more comfortable, give overhead protection, and prevent falls from tractors. Safe Use of Harvesting Equipment Harvesting equipment is a necessity on farms to gather the crops for a bountiful harvest. Harvest time is primary revenue time on many farms and is also one of the peak periods for farm injuries and deaths. Many of these injuries can be prevented through effective farm safety management. • Develop a “safety first” attitude. Follow safe work practices all the time and set a good example for others. • Be physically and mentally fit before operating equipment. Fa-

• Make sure everyone who operates the equipment has the appropriate training and is physically able to operate it safely. • Shut down equipment, turn off the engine, remove key and wait for moving parts to stop before dismounting equipment. • Keep bystanders and others away from equipment operation area. Do not allow “extra riders”, especially children. Livestock Handling Farm workers, ranchers, family members and visitors are injured every year by livestock. Many of these injuries occur when handling livestock. • Label livestock handling areas to warn away visitors. • Design livestock pens and handling facilities using recommended plans. • All facilities should be designed to allow workers easy access to and exit from animals. • Make sure to consistently and properly use restraining equipment. • Equip pens with emergency exits. • Keep children and bystanders out of livestock handling areas. • Animals can be unpredictable. Be sure you understand some of the common instincts of animals. - A strong territorial instinct is common. - Changes in lighting or shadows can excite or spook them. - Separation from other animals can cause unpredictable behavior. - Sudden or loud noises can frighten animals. - Some types of livestock, such as beef cattle, swine and dairy cattle, are colorblind and have poor depth perception. This causes them to be sensitive to contrasts in light, movement, and noises. - Cattle and horses can see everything around them except directly behind their hindquarters.

Operating Farm Equipment

An unwanted safety trend is happening in rural America with an increase in motor vehicle versus farm equipment incidents on our rural roadways. Only 19 percent of the U.S. population live in rural areas, but there are significantly more crashes in rural areas than urban areas. In 2010, fatal crashes in rural areas accounted for 55% of all traffic fatalities nationwide. A variety of risk factors are associated with these increased numbers, such as increased urbanization in rural areas, no or narrow shoulders, slow moving vehicles, hills and curves, blind intersections, and loose surface material. Distracted driving is responsible for a number of these incidents, and we are seeing several agencies running ad campaigns about the danger of distracted driving including the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations (NHTSA) campaign of “one text or call could wreck it all.” NHTSA stats show that in 2010, 3,092 people were killed in

Page 11

crashes involving a distracted driver, and an estimated additional 416,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver. Farmers can help avoid collisions by making sure that they have up-to-date lighting and clearly visible Slow Moving Vehicle emblems, and retro- reflective markings outlining the motorized farm equipment or implements. Farmers should also consider using flashing lights on equipment and moving equipment during daylight hours when possible. Many crashes between farm equipment and passenger vehicles occur at dusk during spring planting and fall harvest season and often involve the farm equipment being rear-ended or sideswiped by motor vehicles. Operators of farm equipment should always wear seatbelts if the equipment has them and only allow an extra rider if the equipment is built with an instructional seat and seatbelt. Extra riders that are not restrained can be injured in a collision and can be a distraction for the operator of the farm equipment. Just as with motor vehicles, farm operators should limit cell phone usage and texting to times when they are not operating the equipment.

Rural Roadway Safety is something that all drivers need to be concerned with. This series of articles will focus on Rural Roadway Safety issues for farmers and people driving on America’s rural roadways. Today’s busy lifestyles seem to have people on the road and in a hurry to get at super-highway speed, but America’s rural roadways are not equipped for that speed and therefore present several safety hazards to contend with. Roads that were engineered decades ago can be narrow and winding, constructed of gravel, and have unguarded intersections and railroad crossings. On rural roads, drivers will find large farm equipment moving slowly from field to field and taking up a large portion of roadway. People can be distracted from the primary responsibility of driving while texting or using hand-held and wireless phones, operating laptop computers, or visiting with passengers in the vehicle. Taking the attention of the driver off the roadway and diverting it to other items is dangerous on four lane roadways, and it can be deadly on the rural roads. Farm equipment needs to be checked on a regular basis to ensure that all lighting and markings are in working order and visible to the motoring public. Farm equipment operators need to take heed when making left turns into fields and farmsteads. Farm operators should also use turn signals when a tractor or combine is so equipped and use hand signals for older equipment. Operators of farm equipment should always look behind before attempting a left-hand turn to be certain no vehicles are trying to pass them. The motoring public needs to be aware that farm machinery will turn left into fields or farmsteads and to drive defensively when attempting to pass farm equipment. Remember: drivers may only pass farm equipment in designated “passing” zones; it is illegal to pass farm equipment in “no passing” zones. It may be difficult for farmers making a left-hand turn to see passing vehicles in their rear view mirrors if those following vehicles are too close. Taking time to pass safely can be the difference between life and death. Leaving home a little earlier and allowing more time to make it to a destination can allow for a more pleasant drive that will be safer for drivers, passengers, and other vehicle operators who share the road.

Much like the scale of projects varies greatly, so, too, do the financial commitments required of homeowners to make those projects a reality. But no matter the size of the project, homeowners can find ways to stretch their budgets without sacrificing the quality of their improvements.

This Week’s Sudoku Puzzle Sponsored By:

How to find time for fitness

Finding time to exercise is no small feat for many men and women. Obligations at home and at the office can make it hard to fit in a workout, a familiar quandary for men and women with multiple commitments. The United States Department of Health and Human Services advises that healthy adults get at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity, and that such activity should be spread out over the course of the week. In addition, the DHHS also advises that healthy adults include strength training exercises in their workout regimens at least twice a week. While such recommendations may seem manageable, many men and women still feel as if there’s just not enough time in the day for them to incorporate a daily exercise regimen. The following are a few ways such men and women can find time for fitness. • Exercise in the morning. Research has shown that men and women who exercise in the mornings exercise on a more consistent basis than those who exercise later in the day, including after leaving the office at the end of the workday. • Prepare meals ahead of time. If working out in the morning simply won’t work out for you, then consider planning meals in advance so you can free up time between the office and dinner each night. For example, slow cookers and crockpots make it possible to start making dinner in the early morning and require little or no effort once you arrive home in the evening • Get off the couch. Many men and women prefer to unwind on the couch as they catch up on their favorite television shows and movies. But such unwinding should not come at the expense of working out. Much like catching up on work at the gym, you also can catch up on your favorite shows and movies while at the gym. Finding time to exercise can be difficult, but even the busiest men and women have several options at their disposal as they attempt to make fitness a bigger priority in their lives.

Sept. 13 marks opening of archery deer hunting season and Wisconsin’s first statewide crossbow hunting season With fall right around the corner, Sept. 13 marks the opening of the 2014 archery and crossbow deer hunting seasons. These seasons will run concurrently statewide, from Sept. 13 to Jan. 4, 2015. “For those of us who love to bow hunt, it’s an exciting time of the year and anticipation runs high,” said Bob Nack, big game section chief for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The new crossbow season, open to all hunters with an appropriate license, will create a new hunting opportunity for many hunters throughout Wisconsin. Hunters interested in using both a conventional bow and crossbow may do so by paying full price for one of the licenses and purchasing a $3 upgrade for the second license. Archery and crossbow deer hunters will again be allowed to hunt during the regular nine-day gun deer hunt in November, and will have the opportunity to fill a gun deer license tag using crossbow or archery equipment. Hunters will see a mix of deer numbers across the state, depending on which zones they hunt. Those in the new Farmland Deer Management Zones should expect to see comparatively more deer than those hunting in the Forest Zones, where deer numbers are down. “We will see a reduced harvest throughout the north and some central forest counties,” said Nack. “We continue to have good numbers of deer in most farmland areas and expect some excellent bow hunting this year.” Nack says it is important to keep in mind that localized distribution of deer may not reflect regional herd trends. Deer change their movements in response to weather, food availability and other factors, and are not always evenly distributed throughout a deer management unit. Aerial surveys often show a large number of deer in 1 square mile of habitat with very few deer in one of the neighboring square-mile blocks. “As always, there is no substitute for scouting and pre-season contacts with neighboring land owners,” said Nack. In 2013, more than 266,000 licensed archery hunters harvested almost 88,000 deer, compared to 263,000 archery hunters and 94,000 deer harvested in 2012. During any open gun deer seasons, archery and crossbow hunters are required to follow the same blaze orange clothing regulations as gun hunters. All deer hunters are reminded to be especially careful when climbing into and out of deer stands state recreational safety specialists say statistics show this is when most injuries occur.

Technology can play a pivotal role in improving public spaces in your community

CARLEY AUCTION

Public spaces have long been the focal point of strong communities. Long before the advent of the Internet, smartphones, tablets, and even newspapers, men and women learned about the goings-on in their communities by gathering in town centers and other public spaces. While communication has become more streamlined since the days of the town crier, a community’s public spaces still say a lot about a community and its residents. Idyllic public spaces can be a source of pride for community residents, providing a gathering space for special community events and holidays as well as a safe place to spend time with family, friends and neighbors. And much like technology has changed the way men and women learn about events in their community, it’s also begun to transform the look and feel of the public spaces those same men and women rely on when spending time with their families and friends. But updates to a public space itself is not the only way city planners can use technology to make the most of their public spaces and strengthen their communities. The following are a few additional ways city officials and planners can use technology to their advantage as they attempt to improve and strengthen their communities. • Embrace social media. Community events are often held in public spaces, and such events can be promoted through various social media platforms. For example, Twitter can be used as a 21st century town crier, instantly informing residents of public events while serving as a reliable way to disseminate any last-minute event updates among community residents. • Poll residents about community events. City officials and planners often want as much community feedback as possible as they attempt to improve their communities. Social media provides an easy avenue to conduct informal polls and gauge community interest in certain programs. Want to host a free movie night in the park next summer? Poll residents on social media to see which movies they’d prefer to see and then show the film that draws the most votes. • Host an online forum where residents can express thoughts and ideas about their communities. Many men and women may be too busy with work and family to attend town hall meetings in person. To counter such hectic schedules, city officials and planners can host online forums where community residents can express their concerns or thoughts about community issues and initiatives from the comforts of home or the office.
