Wisconsin Spudmobile Potato-Growing Area Exhibit Shows Depths of State’s Potato Production
It’s no secret Wisconsin is the third-largest potato-producing state in the nation, which is no small potatoes for a state many people associate with dairy production. But did you ever stop and think about all the facets of potato production or the areas within Wisconsin which produce this fantastic vegetable? The “Potato-Growing Area” exhibit of the Spudmobile will have the answers! As the fourth and final exhibit visitors see on the driver’s side wall, the display will feature a map of Wisconsin that highlights all the areas contributing to Wisconsin’s potato-producing success. For example, Langlade, Oneida and Forest Counties are proudly responsible for supplying more than 8,000 acres of Wisconsin-certified seed potatoes. And as the state’s number one supplier of fresh potatoes, Portage County grows approximately 17,000 acres alone, which produce almost 8 million hundredweight (cwt) or just shy of 1 billion pounds of potatoes in one year. Adams, Juneau, Marathon, and Waushara Counties also join the list combining for over 23,000 acres. “In addition to learning where potatoes come from on this exhibit, people will also be able to get to know some of the growers themselves with their pictures displayed,” says WPVGA Director of Promotions Dana Rady. “It’s important for people to see the farmers who are committed to putting food on their dinner tables every night.” The counties listed above will easily stand out in larger font sizes on the exhibit and will also be featured on the map, which will be positioned in front of a blooming Wisconsin potato field. It’s yet another exhibit that displays an enormous amount of education in a creative and fun way, and one that will have you leave knowing exactly where your food comes from. THE RICHES OF HIS GRACE We were studying God’s Grace, during a Wednesday night bible study, two weeks ago. The Grace of God is not just a gift for covering our sins. It is really a vehicle that carries all of the gifts and power of God. When faith is added to the Grace, all of God’s promises are activated for the believing person. After the meeting I asked if anyone needed prayer. A lady asked for prayer for a bulging disc in her back. She had constant pain and we prayed for her healing. The pain immediately left her back. When a person believes in God’s promise miracles happen. Thank you Jesus for your healing power!

Clifford Hausmann worked for Karl’s Transport for 19 years and passed away suddenly in 2009. He retired from the military and would talk about the horrors that he experienced in Vietnam and the pain he experienced when he returned home from his own fellow Americans. Clifford was a wonderful employee, friend and a GREAT AMERICAN. We want to honor him and all of the Vietnam Vets who never got the homecoming or the thank you that they so deserved. We would like to invite you, your family, current service members and all veterans to come and let us say thank you and try to in some small way show you we appreciate and love you. We will never understand what you went through, only God and your fellow Vets understand but we want to honor you this day and thank you with food, prizes and some fellowship with your fellow Vets.

Home projects perfect for ‘staycationers’
The “staycation” was a concept many first acquainted themselves with when the economy started to struggle and men and women were forced to tighten their belts. In lieu of trips overseas or family trips to popular tourist destinations, many men and women opted to stay home and save their money. While the idea of a staycation makes practical sense, many found that idling away a week of hard-earned vacation at home could grow somewhat boring after a few days. But whether a staycation is a week-long escape from the office or a three-day weekend, homeowners can tackle a few projects around the house to turn their time at home into one marked by productivity instead of boredom. • Add a splash of color. One of the easiest and most effective ways to give a home a new look is to repaint the home’s interior. Such a project can be a small-scale undertaking focusing on one or two rooms in the house or a more ambitious exercise in which more lived-in rooms like a family room and/or kitchen are given an entirely new color scheme. When removing old paint, consider using sanding pads to make the task easier than the days or yore, when paint was often tediously scraped off of walls with a putty
knife. Parents on staycation can even involve the whole family in their painting project, allowing youngsters to choose new colors for their rooms and do a little work with the paintbrush as well. • Say farewell to old faucets. Faucets have a unique way of making bathrooms appear dated. But vanity faucets can quickly and easily be replaced so long as the main problem is appearance and not plumbing. Homeowners who suspect potential plumbing problems with sinks should seek a consultation with a professional before replacing vanity faucets. Once the go-ahead has been granted, homeowners can spend a weekend or a day or two during their staycation replacing vanity faucets around the home. Though the project might seem small, it can yield dramatic and aesthetically appealing results. • Consider some eco-friendly updates. Homeowners who live in older homes might be able to turn their time away from the office into an exercise in going green around their homes. Eco-friendly updates, which can include replacing old air conditioners with newer, more efficient models or replacing older toilets with more newer models designed to conserve water, may even earn homeowners tax breaks and will almost certainly lead to lower utility bills. Additional eco-friendly and easy home improvement projects that can be tackled in a day or two include replacing inefficient and wasteful water fixtures and installing a programmable thermostat that makes it easier to control heating and cooling costs and conserve energy.
• Stain the garage floor. Many homeowners treat their garages as a workspace, and as a result garages tend to be ignored when making cosmetic changes. Staining the garage floor can clear away any oil spots and paint stains that may have accumulated over the years, and a clean and well-maintained garage can increase a home’s resale value. Staycations have grown increasingly popular over the last half decade, as many homeowners are opting to forgo costly vacations in favor of staying home to pad their nest eggs. While it’s important for staycationers to squeeze in some rest and relaxation, it also can be beneficial to tackle a few projects around the house during time away from the office.

How to invite more natural light into your home A dark home can be dreary and drain residents’ energy levels rather quickly. Natural light has the power to make a person feel more energized, and it also can buoy spirits. As a result, many homeowners want to increase the amount of natural light in their homes. Increasing natural sunlight in a home reduces reliance on interior lighting. This reduces energy bills and lowers the home’s carbon footprint. Natural light also can help people in a home feel happier and more content. According to the National Institutes of Health, some people experience serious mood changes during the winter months. Dubbed seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, this condition may be effectively treated with light therapy. Exposure to more light can alleviate fatigue, loss of interest and sad or anxious feelings. Homeowners looking to increase the natural light in their homes, be it for medical or aesthetic reasons, can do so in a variety of ways. • Keep the drapes open. Opening blinds and curtains as far as they will go allows as much light to shine in without having to do major

home renovations or spend any money at all. Homeowners concerned about privacy can install a window film that allows viewing from the inside only. • Clean the windows. Dirty windows obstruct sunlight from entering the home. They also can make a home appear unkempt. Spend a free day cleaning the windows so that they’ll let ample light in. • Install seamless or low-profile windows and doors. Seamless sliding doors enable a large amount of light to enter the home. Such doors can replace an entire wall to brighten up a dark area of a home. The more windows and doors a home has, the brighter it will be. • Take inventory of dark spots. A room may be dark because it simply does not have a layout conducive to brightness. Is a wall blocking light from reaching a portion of the room? Think about changing the room’s layout or even making structural changes to improve light distribution. The addition of a small window on a south- or west-facing wall can greatly improve natural light. Using mirrors can also reflect light where it is needed. • Invest in skylights or solar tubes. Both skylights or solar tubes enable light to enter a home from above. Skylights are larger and require considerably more work to install, while solar tubes are more low-profile and can be put into rooms that do not abut the roofline, such as those obstructed by attic space. The tubular cylinders are installed between the roof and the ceiling and carry light through a reflective tube to the room below. Diffusers on tubular daylighting devices scatter the rays so the light doesn’t cast harsh shadows, and UV filters can help protect furniture from discoloring. • Trim shrubs and trees. If trees and bushes are blocking light from entering your home, trim them to enable dappled light to come through. Deciduous trees that will naturally lose their leaves come autumn can be planted on sunny areas of the property. This way in the summer months they will shade the house and keep it cooler, while in winter more sun will stream in when the leaves are shed.

Keep pests away from entertaining areas
Outdoor entertaining is one of the joys of nicer weather. People routinely gather on the patio or around the pool when the weather warms up, and such recreational activities can foster companionship and reduce stress. However, if nuisance animals and insects are sharing entertaining spaces, these pests can quickly put a damper on the festivities. While it may seem impossible to keep an outdoor entertaining area completely pest-free, there are ways to keep such unwanted intrusions manageable. Identify common pests Yard pests vary depending on geography, so the first step is to figure out which pests are native to your area. Mosquitoes can be found in many locales, but certain insects may be exclusive to specific regions. For example, palmetto bugs are native to moist, tropical areas, such as the southeastern United States. In addition to insects, squirrels, moles, raccoons, and other rodents may also descend on a property. Neighborhoods that abut natural ecosystems or infringe on wild animals’ habitats may see a wider array of animals encroaching on entertaining spaces. Deer, bears, coyotes, and certain bird species can present their own brands of trouble. Homeowners new to an area may have to experience a learning curve to determine which pests are common to a certain area, as well as which seasons bring which creatures. Try natural repellents first To minimize damage to the environment and to protect local wildlife, homeowners should exhaust natural ways to repel pests before resorting to less eco-friendly methods. Animals can be kept out of a yard with fences and other barriers, such as thorny bushes. Many pests are deterred by smells or certain structures

in a lawn or garden. For example, inserting chicken wire into a garden bed may be enough to repel burrowing animals. Certain insects, such as flies and mosquitoes, find the aromas of citronella grass, basil and marigold offensive. Surrounding a property with these plants can create a natural bug repellent. Lavender and rosemary are other aromatics that may deter pests. Blood meal and soap solutions can repel deer and other wildlife that may feed on garden plants. Pests attracted to food can be kept at bay with frequent sweeping or hosing down of the patio. In addition, maintain a clean grill and store trash in tightly secured receptacles. Consider more traditional alternatives If natural repellents do not work, you may need to rely on more traditional products to repel insects and other pests. Beetle traps lure beetles with an inviting scent before the beetle gets trapped in a bag and cannot exit. Traps for wasps and flies follow a similar premise. Bug zappers are largely viewed as an inhumane option but can be highly effective. Unfortunately, these zappers also attract and kill beneficial insects, such as bees and butterflies. Chemical repellents also are available. Stores stock pesticides that will rid plants of damaging insects. These repellents also may be used around the patio to make the area inhospitable to insects and other pests. Contact an exterminator If the problem is simply too difficult to manage on your own, then you might need to contact an exterminator, who can spray the perimeter of the home for bugs and can also be called in to safely trap and remove nuisance animals. An exterminator may also have detailed knowledge of protected species and which habitats can and cannot be disturbed.
