National Design Contest Announced For Wisconsin’s New Spudmobile The Wisconsin Potato & Vegetable Growers Association (WPVGA), representing farmers, shippers and packers, seed providers and affiliated business and organizations, has announced a national design contest for its new rolling billboard and educational center on wheels known as the Spudmobile. The contest, open to anyone 18 years or older, is asking participants to submit their designs for the outer “wrap” of the Spudmobile. The Association will be awarding three first place prizes of $1,000 each for the best designs. The Spudmobile Wrap Contest launched April 1 and runs for a six week period. During that time, contest entrants will be asked to help develop a design for the Spudmobile’s exterior wrap. The WPVGA will use the Spudmobile to promote the quality potato and vegetables that are grown in Wisconsin, and educate people about the health benefits potatoes offer. Wisconsin spuds are free of fat, cholesterol and gluten, and have complex carbohydrates that satisfy a body’s energy needs, especially before and after exercise. The WPVGA will also use the Spudmobile to promote buying local and enhancing their message of the importance of ‘Field to Fork’ in the lives of all Americans. Buying local contributes to Wisconsin’s economy, but it also ensures that people are receiving quality food that doesn’t have to travel thousands of miles to get to a family’s plate. “This Spudmobile Wrap Contest is a fantastic way to get the public involved in a project we have been discussing for some time,” said Dana Rady, WPVGA director of promotions. “We are excited to see the eye-catching, vibrant and engaging designs artists will be sending in.” Entering the contest is extremely simple. Interested individuals can download all the necessary materials and fill out an entry form online at www.wisconsinspudmobile.com. All submissions should also be uploaded to the site no later than 4pm CST on Tuesday, May 13, 2014. A complete set of rules, regulations and submission specifications can be found at www.wisconsinspudmobile.com. All entries must be developed using a professional design software. WPVGA is a non-profit organization that represents and promotes state potato and vegetable growers. We currently represent more than 300 members and affiliates. For more information on our commitment to sustainable agriculture, jobs and water use, visit www.wisconsinpotatoes.com.

Pet First Aid
Sale Now through April 16th
AWARENESS MONTH
April is Pet First Aid Awareness Month
Are you prepared in the event that your pet has an emergency? At Antigo Veterinary Clinic, we treat many pets every month for such problems as toxic ingestion or poisoning, choking, wounds, injuries and heat stroke in warmer months. Here are a few tips you can learn to help you pet in an emergency: • Make a home and travel first aid kit for your pet. This should include items such as peroxide, alcohol, bandaging materials, Benadryl Allergy tablets, aspirin or baby aspirin, and triple antibiotic ointment. Consult with your veterinarian in advance about safe emergency dosages of aspirin or baby aspirin, and Benadryl for dogs. • Choking emergencies: if possible, open the mouth and look inside to see if there is an object that can be removed. If not, try lifting the pet’s hindquarters and/or attempting a Heimlich maneuver with your pet’s forequarters pointed down. Using your thumbs pointed toward the soft spot under the pet’s ribs, give several quick inward thrusts. • Wounds: clean wounds with water and antibacterial soap as soon as possible. Small/superficial wounds may be treated with triple antibiotic ointment. Peroxide can be used in fresh wounds.
715 Superior Street, Antigo • 715-623-3516 Hours: Mon - Fri 8 - 6 • Sat 8 - 5 • Sun 10 - 3
• Bleeding: apply compression to the bleeding area and wrap with bandage material if possible, to temporarily stop the bleeding. • Ingestion of poisonous foods, plants or foreign material – with exception of caustic agents such as bleach, batteries and other corrosive materials, inducing vomiting can be of benefit. For dogs, administer hydrogen peroxide in quantities of 1-2 tablespoons to induce vomiting; then contact your veterinarian. There are no safe over-the-counter emetics for cats. Become familiar with common poisons – human medications, household plants, chocolate, xylitol (in sugar free gum and candy), chocolate, onions, grapes/raisins, macadamia nuts, rat poison, antifreeze. • Heat stroke: begin cooling your pet immediately by placing cool wet cloths on the pet or bathing in cool (not cold) water. • Allergic reaction: some pets may have allergies to insect bites/bee stings. Facial swelling and/or vomiting can be seen within minutes or hours. In early stages, administration of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) at a dose of 1 mg per lb body weight can be helpful. • Vehicular trauma: internal injuries and fractures are common. If possible, wrap your pet in a blanket and transfer them onto a piece of sturdy plywood for transport, to minimize further injury. • CPR: learn the basics of pet CPR – chest compressions and rescue breathing. Attend a CPR course for pets. Antigo Veterinary Clinic will be holding a Pet First Aid and CPR seminar on Saturday April 27th at 2 pm at Antigo Veterinary Clinic.

Prom 2014 Safety
Tips For Parents
• Know and discuss the School code of conduct before the prom with your child. • Does the school code of conduct extend to off-site functions that have been approved by the school? • Know who your child is attending the prom with and discuss the events for pre and post prom parties with other parents. • Discuss the dangers of drinking and driving. • Talk with your child about the dangers of club drugs, warning signs and who to notify for assistance. • Pre-plan and role-play answers that your child can use to get out of uncomfortable situations. (e.g., offered alcohol, getting a ride from an intoxicated driver, unwanted sexual advances, etc.) • Discuss guidelines and a curfew. Discuss the consequences of violating these rules. • Discuss travel plans, use a reputable limousine service that will not allow a person to bring, serve or introduce alcohol into the vehicle. • Know who is driving to the prom and who will be a passenger. Limit the number of passengers to increase safety and reduce driver distractions. • Know the location of post prom parties and who is sponsoring them. • Talk to your teenager about the serious dangers and consequences of underage drinking and driving. • If your child’s’ plans change, confirm the change with the parents of other children.

• Remind your child that you are there for them, if they need a ride home or to an after prom affair.
Tips for Teens
• Alcohol is illegal for persons under the age of twenty-one. Underage drinking is illegal and can result in arrest, injury, or worse! • Don’t let friends’ drink and drive. • Plan ahead—make sure you have a safe plan for prom night. • Discuss your plans with your friends, remind each other about responsible decision-making and confronting peer pressure. • Do not accept any drinks from someone you do not know. If you leave your drink, discard it and get a new one. • Do not leave your possessions unattended. • Learn the warning signs for alcohol poisoning and drug intoxication, contact 911 for assistance and immediate treatment. • Take extra money or have a responsible person available for transportation for a safe ride home or in case an emergency arises. • Remember to charge you cell phone and have it with you. • Know where you are and where you are going, keep your parents and friends informed. • Trust your instincts, if you feel endangered or uncomfortable, leave immediately. • Intoxication by alcohol or drugs can lead to poor judgment and dangerous situations. • Remember to contact your parents if your plans change. • Practice and discuss answers you can use to get out of uncomfortable situations.

HOME IMPROVEMENT
Sealing a driveway can extend its life
Installing an asphalt or a concrete driveway can be an expensive undertaking. To preserve the fresh, new look of the driveway, have the driveway sealed and then routinely seal it to keep it looking pristine. A good sealant can keep a driveway looking new longer and also can rejuvenate the appearance of an older driveway. Sealant can be compared to car wax. It provides an outer coating that will repel stains, stop UV rays from fading the driveway and help to protect against cracks and driveway degradation. Over time, asphalt driveways will begin to fade in color and the stone and rocks used in the asphalt mix will appear more prominent. By sealing the driveway, a homeowner can maintain its original dark color. Another reason to seal a driveway is to reduce the chance of freeze-thaw damage. This type of damage results when water penetrates the surface of the driveway and then expands as it freezes. The expansion can cause cracks and fissures, as well as compromise the soil underneath the driveway, making it sink or become unstable. Sealed driveways help to keep water beading on the surface of the driveway, rather than being absorbed into the driveway • Natural Stone Veneer • Chimney Block/Flues/Fire Brick • Patio Block/Concrete Pavers • Retaining Wall Block • Glass Block • Face Brick • Cultured Stone

material. When water no longer beads on the driveway, this is often an indicator that the driveway needs to be resealed. There are some guidelines to follow when sealing driveways. When starting, sealant should not be applied immediately after the driveway is poured. Concrete needs to cure for a period of up to one month before sealant should be applied. Fresh asphalt contains oils that eventually evaporate. The oils are what makes fresh asphalt pliable and soft. Once these oils evaporate, the asphalt gets harder and more durable. Sealers can prevent evaporation and may make the asphalt permanently soft. After the initial base application of sealant, the driveway should only be sealed every two to three years, depending on its condition. Sealants are just coatings, and adding too many layers can cause the sealant coatings to crack and peel away. Sealing a driveway is a labor-intensive process that’s best left to professionals. These professionals have the knowledge of technique and the right tools to get an even, thin coating of sealant. Remember, a driveway should not be walked or driven on for a minimum of 24 hours after sealant is applied. Weather conditions also can influence the amount of time it takes for the driveway to cure. Having the driveway sealed prolongs its durability and appearance. It also can make the driveway less prone to staining and cracking, making this project a sound investment.

Helpful Hints to Keep Your Pets Safe
Here are some helpful tips on keeping your pets safe this Spring: Make sure your cats or dogs are happy and healthy by brushing them and playing with their favorite toy. When brushing, now is the time to check their fur and skin for scabs, ticks or fleas. Did you get your pet to the vet? Yearly check-ups are good preventive medicine. Remember, that animals will often eat plants, foods and other substances that are poisonous to them. Plants like lilies, poinsettias, fox glove and foods like chocolate and substances like anti-freeze. Make sure your pets have collars with I.D. tags and now micro-chips are available so if your animal takes an unexpected adventure, you will be able to identify them and get them back quickly. Spend more time on reward instead of punishment. But because we love our pets so much, we give them everything they want. We should still set boundaries much like children to help keep your pets stay safe. Robert J. Zoretich President, Langlade County Humane Society

uestion: What do I need to know about Antihistamines, Allergy Medication?
nswer: Antihistamines are the most widely used medications to relieve or prevent allergy symptoms. These medications prevent the effects of histamine during an allergic reaction. Antihistamines are available as a liquid, tablet or nasal spray. Some require a prescription, while others are available over the counter (OTC). Newer antimhistamines prescribed by your doctor are less likely to have side effects.

Nutrition can have a big impact on your overall health. Smart Nutrition is about making food choices that produce a positive, rather than negative, impact. In fact, making smart food choices can help you maintain a healthy weight, lower your risk for a number of diseases, and even strengthen your immune system. While some foods clearly get the “green light” nutritionally, others deserve a yellow or even a red light. Fats, oils, sugars, and other high calorie/low nutrition foods, should be consumed with caution. Sodium should also be on your list of “yellow light” foods, and in some cases deserves a red light. Drinking plenty of water is part of good nutrition, but foods like raw fruit and vegetables can also help keep you hydrated. It’s important to realize that your body can have trouble distinguishing hunger from thirst pangs, so being well hydrated can often keep you from eating too much. By the same token, be aware that there may be times when you think your body is saying “I’m hungry”, but it could actually be trying to tell you that it needs more water. Alcohol, soda, and energy drinks give you high calories with minimal nutrition, so if you’re watching your calories and you want every calorie to count, avoid the empty calories found in alcohol or sugary drinks.

I was having a sciatic nerve problem that was causing me to have a pain in my lower left hip and down the back of my left leg. Some days the pain was mild and on other days it was extremely painful. It had been getting progressively worse in a two month period. One day my grandson was visiting and asked why I was walking funny. I told him about the problem and he pointed at me and said “It is healed in the name of Jesus!” After he left, I noticed the pain had diminished. The next day it was gone altogether and hasn’t returned since. This was several weeks ago. Praise the Lord! He still heals!!
