St. Augustine of Canterbury St. Augustine was the prior of the Benedictine monastery of St. Andrew in Rome at the end of the sixth century when Pope St. Gregory the Great sent St. Augustine of Canterbury along with around thirty of his fellow monks to England. After the dangerous journey he was greeted by the pagan king Ethelbert of Kent. Married to a Christian wife, King Ethelbert was baptized by St. Augustine shortly after his arrival and St. Augustine began reestablishing the Church there. He became the Bishop of Canterbury during this endeavor and spent much of his time trying to reconcile tensions between the recently converted Saxons, and the Christians they drove into hiding. St. Augustine had accomplished a significant amount in a short span before his death on May 27th 605.

For the Month of Mary: Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me.
