is not typical prime-time fare. As Reid and new surgeon Joel Goran (Daniel Gillies) struggle to save the comatose doctor’s life, Harris roams the halls of the hospital in “spirit” form. It isn’t clear, even to Harris himself, whether he’s truly a ghost or simply a figment of his own imagination. The cast also includes Husein (Huse) Madhavji, Julia TaylorRoss, Kristopher Turner and Wendy Crewson. The behindthe-scenes crew boasts an impressive history in the Canadian television industry. “Saving Hope” was created by Malcolm MacRury, known for his work on the hit CBC series “Republic of Doyle”, and Canadian playwright Morwyn Brebner. The series is produced by Ilana C Frank Films and Entertainment One (eOne) in association with CTV and NBC. Snagging the U.S. network was a huge triumph. In November 2011, hollywoodreporter. com revealed that Ilana Frank and eOne would pitch “Saving Hope” to the U.S. networks and cable giants. By March, it was official -- NBC had picked up the show’s 13 episodes for the summer season. CTV executive Phil King was understandably pleased. “With NBC now on board, this is another huge success for Bell Media’s independent production team and demonstrates yet again our commitment to

coma, plunging the hospital into chaos. Erica Durance, best known to many as Lois Lane in the CW’s “Smallville,” stars as Alex Reid, a fellow surgeon who is also Harris’s fiancee. While “Saving Hope” could be compared to the droves of medical dramas that have graced the small screen over the years, it’s actually more interesting for how it differs. Straddling both the worlds of traditional dramas and sci-fi, it

producing high-caliber, engaging and compelling original programming,” said King. “This captivating new series is sure to resonate with Canadian viewers as well as with viewers south of the border.” “Saving Hope” wouldn’t be the first Canadian series to make the jump from the Great White North. Lately, Canucks have been invading U.S. TV screens in such hits as Global/ ABC’s cop drama “Rookie Blue” (also produced by Frank), the Showcase/Syfy supernatural offering “Lost Girl,” and another CTV/NBC series “The Listener.” CTV also originated the police drama “Flashpoint,” which airs on CBS. It used to be that Canadian channels would merely pick up U.S. shows for broadcast in prime time, but there’s been a boom in Canada’s television industry thanks to the nation’s wealth of talent. Many of those talented actors, camera operators and directors honed their chops on American series, ironically enough. Since production costs are often lower in Canada, U.S. TV shows have been filming in such urban centers as Toronto and Vancouver for years, leaving well-trained, highly skilled professionals. Stars Durance and Shanks are two such professionals. In addition to “Smallville,” Calgary native Durance has been seen in “The Chris Isaak Show,” “Tru Calling” and “Andromeda.” She even appeared on “Stargate SG-1,” the Showtime/Syfy hit

her “Saving Hope” co-star Shanks is most famous for. Hailing from Kamloops, the actor rose to fame as Dr. Daniel Jackson in the science-fiction series, and has appeared in Fox’s “24,” “Andromeda,” “Eureka” and “Sanctuary” as well. He also appeared in the series that made Durance a star when he guested as archeologist Carter Hall (aka Hawkman) in “Smallville.” Many of the other stars are Canadian, too. Madhavji was a well-known television personality north of the border because of his work with the entertainment channel Star (now E! Canada). Turner’s hometown is Winnipeg, Man. Gillies was raised in New Zealand, but was born in Winnipeg. Crewson is truly a Canadian star. The Hamilton, Ont., native’s career has spanned three decades in film, television and on stage. Incidentally, “Saving Hope” isn’t the only series to take a stab at blending medical drama with something a bit more ethereal. CBS’s freshman drama “A Gifted Man” follows a surgeon who’s visited by the spirit of his ex-wife. While “A Gifted Man” certainly hasn’t killed in the ratings, NBC has higher hopes for its new series. “Saving Hope’s” ghostly sci-fi element gives it more room to explore bioethics and the differences between medical and spiritual death as the doctors face difficult and courageous decisions in their quest to save lives.
