Academy Award-winning British filmmaker Danny Boyle leads the charge as the artistic director for the Opening Ceremony. It was announced he would take the lead on the Opening Ceremony in June 2010, and he’s been hard at work ever since. The director is best known for his work on such films as “Slumdog Millionaire” (2008), which won him an Oscar, “28 Days Later” (2002) and “Trainspotting” (1996), though he’s also worked extensively in theatre and television. Inspired by Shakespeare’s “The Tempest,” Boyle’s Opening Ceremony is entitled “Isles of Wonder.” With rolling hills, rivers and families enjoying picnics, the opening scene represents a

classic and idyllic view of the British countryside. The massive set will feature meadows, fields and rivers, as well as real farmyard animals. Yes, real animals -- 12 horses, three cows, two goats, 10 chickens, 10 ducks, nine geese, 70 sheep and three sheep dogs will graze those picture-perfect fields. The four nations of the United Kingdom will each be represented by their national flowers -- the rose of England, the thistle of Scotland, the daffodil of Wales and flax from Northern Ireland. “The ceremony is an attempt to capture a picture of ourselves as a nation, where we have come from and where we want to be,” said Boyle. “The best part of telling that story has been working with our 10,000 volunteers. I’ve been astounded by the selfless dedication of the volunteers. They are the purest embodiment of the Olympic spirit and represent the best of who we are as a nation.’ Indeed, the volunteers are the true heart of the Opening Ceremony. Volunteers young and old have stepped up to ensure this year’s Opening Ceremony is memorable. Being a part of something so iconic instills a sort of national pride that only comes around every four years. The performers gave up weekends and evenings to take part in endless rehearsals (more than 150 by late June) to get everything just right.

Although the performers may be well rehearsed, a production on this scale requires a huge amount of work behind the scenes as well. The Whitechapel Bell Foundry created the largest harmonically tuned bell in the world, which will ring out to commence the beginning of the presentation. The bell measures more than six feet tall, nine feet wide, and weighs 23 tons. Astounding as that may be, the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games Opening Ceremony boasts even more impressive stats. There are more than more than 161,000 square feet of staging. To put that in perspective, that’s about the size of 12 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The flying system created for London’s ceremonies could lift as many as five elephants, and the prop store has been working on almost 13,000 props. All of the ceremonies require a whopping 23,000 costumes, and the costume department was kept busy sewing 24,570 buttons onto the costumes for just one of the opening sequences of the Opening Ceremony. Lighting includes 1,100 automated lamps, 1,000 conventional lamps, 500 LED fixtures and 32 follow spots. The millionwatt sound system utilizes more than 500 speakers and 50 tons of sound gear. That sound gear will be put

to use by British electronic music innovators Underworld, who’ve been appointed music directors for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Summer Games. Underworld, aka Rick Smith and Karl Hyde, are responsible for all of the music in the three-hour ceremony. “We want to leave people with a musical memory of the show rather than a purely visual one,” said Hyde. “It’s a great honor to be asked to do this and one we’re taking very seriously -- it’s certainly not something we’ll get the chance to do again.” Being part of the Olympic Opening Ceremony is the opportunity of a lifetime, especially considering this year’s Olympics are expected to draw in one billion viewers. Thanks to technology, these Games will be more closely followed than ever before, with live streaming of events online and various Olympic apps for mobile devices. Along with Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee, commemorating 60 years since her accession, it’s been a banner year for the U.K. There’s no doubt, it’s the place to be this summer as thousands of athletes compete for Olympic gold. Tune in Friday, July 27, to witness all the pomp and circumstance as the London 2012 Summer Olympics get underway.
