Custom decor without hassle, costs Brandpoint

Conventional wis dom holds that in order to achieve a custom look in your home decor, you either have to spend a bundle hiring professionals, or invest countless hours of hard work doing it yourself. In the Internet age, however, it’s easier than ever to achieve the look of custom home decor without the expense or hassle of traditional methods. That’s because you can buy virtually anything online these days, from custom wall art to made-to-order slip covers. And while for some items you’ll pay a bit more than you would in the local department store, online resources can provide you with virtually limitless

ways to achieve exactly the look you want. Here are a handful of home decor staples that you can customize through online resources: • Wall decor: While family photos are one of the easiest, cheapest ways to customize your wall art, sometimes a room cries out for an eyecatching canvas wrapped print. Home decor stores can yield some acceptable options, but for a bigger selection — and reasonable costs — head over to www. canvasyourway.com. The same folks who pioneered the concept of custom wallpaper murals now offer millions of image options online that you can customize in several sizes. Perhaps you need a cityscape to add just the right touch of sophisti-

cation to a living room and haven’t been able to find it in local stores. Canvas Your Way has hundreds to choose from or you can make a custom canvas print by uploading your own image. With so many options, it’s possible to find exactly what you’re looking for at a reasonable price — without the worry that you’ll ever see a similar piece in someone else’s home. • Lighting: Drive down any subdivision in the U.S., glance in entryway windows and you’ll likely see the same light fixtures repeated over and over again. Builders standardize home lighting and many homeowners simply never bother See Decor, D7

Wall decor can play a big part in a refreshed look in your home.

Improve outdoor entertaining space Brandpoint

From barbecues and games of bocce to parties and candlelit dinners, outdoor space can be a hub for entertaining friends and family. “Try to create a living room for your outdoor space,” says Kate Anthony, owner of Kate & Company Design Studio and Interior Design instructor at The Art Institute of California-San Diego, a campus of Argosy University. People spend a lot of time on their indoor living room spaces, and she recommends extending the interior home out to your exterior. Whether you have a small patio or sprawling backyard, interior design experts from The Art Institutes system of schools provide tips for making the great outdoors a place to eat, play and entertain.

Design and Interior Design instructor at The Art Institute of California-Hollywood, a campus of Argosy University, says a focal point brings everyone together, and can include furniture, a fountain, a fireplace, or any piece that will provide a “wow” factor. An outdoor rug can serve as a focal point and help define an area, and a fire pit makes a great place for guests to gather.

Seating groups

“Define the space for the type of entertaining you need,” Varias said. Determine the size of your space, the number of people you will typically be entertaining and whether you will use the space for eating, drinking and socializing, or playing games. In a larger space, you can mix dining, hanging out and garden spaces to proFocal points vide your guests with more areas Edward Varias, owner of E.V. to enjoy.

For a small space, seating can be a simple bistro table and two chairs. For larger spaces, you can incorporate sofa and chair groupings, along with a small coffee table. Anthony adds that a circular furniture pattern allows everyone to see each other, which is great when playing cards.

Vistas “Select several vistas or view points for people to explore depending on the space; utilizing the space in several locations creates gathering areas, such as a garden to explore or seclusion for meditating,” Varias said. Anthony encourages people to think about creating areas for games such as bocce and says that seating or rugs can help establish designated areas without fences or barriers. Deck Continued from D3 owners are adding punch by pairing two or more colors of deck stain. Staining the framing boards a contrasting color to the overall shade is a simple way to incorporate a second color. Consider staining the railings a complementary color to the deck boards — or just stain the railings and protect new wood with a clear waterproofer. Wilson adds that many homeowners think they have to apply a protective coating over a deck stain, but that isn’t the case. All Thompson’s WaterSeal Waterproofing Stains combine color and waterproofing protection all in one.

“Thinking about your deck in terms of colors opens up a world of creative, beautiful possibilities.” DIY Network star Jeff Wilson

ficial “color of the year” for 2014, and incorporating the color on a deck with plants and furniture can really liven up the space. Purple and green are a beautiful, natural pairing. Couple purple flowers with green pots or add dark purple pillows to green Adirondack chairs. “Thinking about your deck in terms of colors opens up a world of creative, beautiful possibilities,” Wilson said. “Deck-cessories” “It’s a simple, affordable Like any room of the way to make a stylish space home, furniture and acces- you can enjoy every day.” sories are an easy way to update for today’s trends. For Designer decks example, purple is the ofMake an even bolder state-

ment by using deck stains to create a pattern on the deck. Although it takes more time and planning than traditional deck staining, it may be worth the extra effort to achieve that unique style. For example, a checkerboard effect is very dramatic. The project is even fairly easy to execute with advanced planning. Consider pairing natural wood with a red semi-transparent stain to really make the design pop. Another styling tip is to create a unique design in the center of the deck. Diamonds are a popular trend and easier to create than the checkerboard pattern. Add several connected shapes in different sizes for an added dramatic effect. You can visit www.thompsonswaterseal.com and www.pinterest.com/thomponswseal for a variety of inspirational deck looks and other projects for your backyard oasis.

Decor Continued from D5 to change things. Or, if they do, they head over to the same home improvement store that everyone else uses, so changing a light fixture doesn’t really give them a unique look. A simple online search can yield thousands of options for customizing your home’s lighting design — from chandelier makers that allow you to specify the number, size and color of crystals to pendant lights in myriad colors, shapes and sizes. • Window treatments: Blinds for one room, sheers for another and valances in a third — sure, you can get all those window treatments customized from local businesses, but how

much time and money will it cost? Online merchants offer virtually the same level of customization for window treatments as you would find in a specialty shop, at competitive prices and with far less hassle than driving to a custom store, or having a sales person come to your home. All you need is a measuring tape and a vision, and you can find custom window treatments online to fit any home decor. • Slip covers: From shabby couches that are still comfy to sturdy dining room chairs that just need a new look, covering existing furniture with custom slip covers is usually much cheaper than reupholstering or replacing furniture altogether. Again, it’s easy

to find a host of online merchants that can customize slip covers to your specifications, including the exact size, color, pattern and fabric you desire. Easier than driving around looking at fabric samples, ordering custom slip covers online makes it simple to give much-loved, still useful furniture a whole new look and life. And most reputable online sellers will offer satisfaction guarantees, so you can be confident you’ll be happy with the look of custom slipcovers that you buy online. Customization doesn’t have to cost a lot of time and money. Some smart online searching can help you create exactly the home decor look you desire.

Family Features In home listings across the country, the word small is often replaced with a far more marketable and appealing word: “charming.” But what makes a home charming compared to small? How does a homeowner transition a cramped room into a space with unique and appealing character? Focusing on a few key areas will let you make a big impact in a little space, allowing you to create a charming and memorable environment. For starters, when dealing with a small space, it’s important to live clutter free. Make sure that only mandatory items and furniture are in the room.

Create special spaces

Lorie Marrero, a certified professional organizer and author of “The Clutter Diet,” recommends carefully considering the functions of any space, such as TV viewing, reading or computer use, so that only the items needed for those specific functions are stored there. Understanding how this space is utilized also allows you to establish dedicated zones and supplies for each activity more efficiently. In addition, Marrero notes that creating proper storage is the key to managing and maintaining a clutter-free home. “Even if large closets aren’t available, there are a number of versatile and affordable DIY products that help create storage where there wasn’t any. Building a better bath on a budget Brandpoint

Do you cringe every time you step into your bathroom? If so, it may be time to remodel. Bathroom remodels are the most popular remodeling project, according to a recent survey by the National Association of Home Builders. But remodeling doesn’t have to be a budget buster. You can simply improve what you already have to get the spa-like retreat you’re seeking. Here are a few tips to get you started on your redesign.

Decorative details

Remodeling is a costly job on its own, but trying to add unique details and decor to your project makes it

that much more expensive. To get a custom look without the price tag, start bargain shopping online or at a local antique shop. Look for one-of-a-kind finds like a beautifully framed mirror. A mirror adds the illusion of space and changes the look of a bathroom — whether you’re going for a traditional, transitional or modern feel. If you find a piece that doesn’t perfectly fit, add a coat of paint to match the rest of your space. Artwork adds a sophisticated touch and the best part is it doesn’t have to cost a lot. There are several websites where you can print artwork in a variety of styles and then frame it yourself. Accessories can also make a big difference; a new shower curtain, towels (in beautiful

Bathroom Continued from D12

Do you have a small space but want to use darker tones? Paint one wall dark and make it the focal point behind the vanity or against the tub. Don’t be afraid of using color. Remember: Paint easily can be changed if you don’t like it down the road. You also can add splashes of color with wallpaper borders, bath rugs and soap dishes.
