Celebrating 40 Years — the Carlisle way In 1974, Bill and Chip Miller (no relation) launched what is now known as Carlisle Events with an offering called Post-War ‘74. At that point, the two men shared more than just the same last name, they shared a passion for what is widely recognized today as the collector car hobby. That first event promoted by the Millers in 1974, now known as Fall Carlisle, quickly grew. In 1977, Spring Carlisle became the latest edition to the car show season at the Carlisle PA Fairgrounds and in 1982, Chip Miller showcased his passion with the addition of an all-Corvette-themed weekend, Corvettes at Carlisle. Over time, Bill and Chip furthered the excitement at Carlisle by offering collector car auctions and adding shows that catered specifically to certain enthusiast bases. Show totals reached as high as 17 in 2013. Between the launch of Carlisle Events in 1974 and modern day, Carlisle (the company) has promoted happenings not only in Carlisle (the town), but in places like Bloomington, Illinois;

Carlisle Events has kept its focus on the collector hobby, while also adding a Sports & Outdoor show and taking control of its four collector car auctions. Auburn, Indiana; San Diego, California; Evanston, Illinois; Atlantic City, New Jersey; Allentown, Pennsylvania; Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania and Zephyrhills, Florida. Now with 14 dates on the schedule, Carlisle Events has kept its fo-
cus on the collector hobby, while also adding a Sports & Outdoor show and taking control of its four collector car auctions. The outdoor weekend happens in September, while the auctions are part of Spring and Fall Carlisle as well
as Zephyrhills Fall and Winter AutoFest. With two dates completed as part of the 40th Anniversary Season of Carlisle Events, the remainder of the schedule has a lot to look forward to, plus there is a lot
of “buzz” surrounding the special displays that are in the works for the specialty shows, which begin in May with Carlisle Performance & Style. Carlisle’s home-based season starts in April with Spring Carlisle. The weekend welcomes 100,000 guests and boasts 8,100 sold out vending and car corral spaces. This will also be the second 2014 auction backed by Carlisle Auctions and will include the increasingly popular FREE UNLESS SOLD policy. In addition, ARMO comes to Carlisle with its Hot Products Showcase and the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow return too, showcasing the future of the automotive hobby as they tear down and rebuild Chevy small block engines. Market Cross Pub & Brewery will also tap their “Car Show Cream Ale” the first day of Spring Carlisle. Following Spring Carlisle is Carlisle Performance & Style. Carlisle Events has many car shows planned for this season — the organizations 40th anniversary.
Carlisle Events Continued from G5 following weekend, the Carlisle Import & Kit Nationals. Import weekend is more of an automotive festival than a car show and this year’s event will feature British built cars. Starting in June, the summer of anniversaries commences. The Carlisle Ford Nationals hosts a special 50th Anniversary celebration of the Mustang as well as a 110-year Anniversary of Ford itself. The Ford Parade will also occur in downtown Carlisle welcoming Car Show attendees downtown and offering visitors the opportunity to view the cars. Two weeks later, the Carlisle GM Nationals hosts a 50th Anniversary gathering of the Pontiac GTO. Finally, as the month of July kicks off, the Carlisle Chrysler Nationals celebrates the 100th year of the brand. In addition to the 100-year festivi-
ties at the Chrysler show, the weekend also begins the second half of the Carlisle schedule. August hosts three events, the Carlisle Truck Nationals, Bloomsburg Nationals and Corvettes at Carlisle. The Corvette weekend is the world’s largest all-Corvette-themed show and it’s just one of the “World’s Largest” offerings that can be found at Carlisle. The Corvette Parade will come into the downtown area on Saturday and allow visitors a first-hand look at the cars and opportunities to mingle with the owners. The anniversary season winds down with the Sports & Outdoor Show, Fall Carlisle and a return trip to Florida for Fall AutoFest. All told, the 40th Anniversary Season is something that co-owner and co-founder Bill Miller is very proud of! “When Chip and I started this in 1974, we
didn’t know what the future would hold for us,” noted Miller. “We are so fortunate that we were able to turn our passion and hobby into a business that has been very good to us and our families,” continued Miller. “While Chip is no longer with us, I think about him every day. I’m sure that he’s looking down on us and his son Lance and smiling from ear to ear. Chip was a car guy, I am a car guy and we’ve been blessed to have interacted with so many car guys (and girls) just like us over the course of the years. “ With the hopes of at least 40 more years, everyone at Carlisle Events hopes that you can find some time to check out an event in 2014 and beyond. If you haven’t been out on the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail between Shippensburg and Newville, you’ve missed some of the best outdoor experiences in Cumberland Valley. You can’t get a real appreciation or understanding of farming in the Cumberland Valley from a moving car. Whatever the season, there are interesting sights to be seen from the trail as farmers work the land. Watching the farming process during spring is particularly enjoyable since all the trees and bushes along the trail are also sprouting leaves. Over the next few months, farmers will be busy preparing fields for planting. This will give trail users the first opportunity to track crop progression on fields adjacent to the trail. As the weather warms it’s great to observe the plants emerging and maturing. Hiking or bik-
ing on the trail provides the best opportunity to see the cycle of farm life. Fresh produce is often available at the farm adjacent to the trail at Duncan Road. Additionally, signs installed along the length of the trail provide information on the area’s agricultural industry and Civil War history. The lucky hiker may also get to see deer, fox, groundhogs, and a great selection of local and migrating birds. Early morning or evening is the best time to observe wildlife from the trail. If the weather’s clear, the Rail Trail provides spectacular views of North and South Mountains which define the Cumberland Valley. Any time of day offers beautiful landscapes across the farmlands, and these views can change hourto-hour. On a clear day the sights from the trail are the
best in the Valley – it’s truly “big sky” country out here. Make plans to see the beautiful Cumberland Valley from the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail. The trail is nine miles long, but you don’t have to do it all at once. There are parking areas available with restroom facilities at Shippensburg Township Park and at the Trailhead Park on McFarland Street in Newville. There is also parking available near the trail’s midpoint in Oakville. It’s great to be out on the trail whether you’re a serious hiker, biker, horseback rider, or just a family out for fun, fresh air and exercise. Cumberland Valley’s spectacular scenic views and traditional working farms are best enjoyed from the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail.

Found it. The best dark chocolate raisin clusters. “I love dark chocolate. Love it. In the past two weeks, I’ve visited Macris Chocolates twice. When I go to fancy chocolate stores, which isn’t often, I usually just go with what I know I like, dark chocolate covered pretzels. Macris must have over 100 varieties of chocolate so I decided in addition to the pretzels I would try something else...so it came down to the dark chocolate raisin clusters. Wow! Amazing! Each cluster is the perfect ratio of raisins and chocolate. The sweet raisins paired with the rich, smooth chocolate is delightful. If you go to Macris make sure you try them. They also have an array of super cute gift items. I bought my girls mini pink and purple containers with chocolate pretzel balls. If you need a last minute gift, visit Macris (located in Lemoyne’s West Shore Plaza).”
Castlerigg Wine Shop opens in Carlisle. “I stopped by Castlerigg Wine Shop today after they had their grand opening weekend. It was much more than I expected! They offer Pennsylvania wines through exclusive partnerships and currently feature wines from Seven Mountain Wine Cellars and The Vineyard at Grandview. You can do a tasting at the wine bar or enjoy a glass and share a
few appetizers at one of the cozy tables. Some of the appetizers sounded delicious...baked brie, cheesecake, chocolate truffles, caprese and a few more! They also offer some unique wine merchandise and olive oils and balsamics from Olio in Lititz and specialty jams and chutneys from Tait Farm Foods in Centre Hall. They are hoping to add some live music and other special events so we will definitely be back to this new Carlisle addition. Castlerigg is conveniently located on Hanover Street in the downtown area so if you are headed out to dinner at one of Carlisle’s BYOB locations it’s easy to stop by and grab a bottle.”
workout outside since it was such a beautiful day. Opossum Lake (located at Easy Rd/Opossum Lake Rd, Carlisle) proved to be a fantastic alternative! I expected the 4-mile trail to leisurely wind me along the recently refilled 59-acre Opossum Lake, but what I got was easy to moderate hiking through the woods, fields and lakeside access points surrounding the lake with glimpses of the lake never too far away. Besides hiking, the lake is also suitable for fishing (bass, bluegills, muskellunge, crappie and trout), kayaking, picnicking and wildlife education. There are signs along the trail pointing out different areas of interest, including a beaver habitat, hardwood Hiking at forest, prairie and wetlands. Opossum Lake. I think my favorite part was a section where honeysuckle has completely taken over (it’s an invasive species), leaving a sweet aroma in the air. If you go, be sure to take along sturdy sneakers or hiking shoes, a bottle of water and bug spray!”
Mid St8 Taco adds flavor to the West S hore Farmers Market. “Mid St8 Taco recently opened at the West Shore Farmers Market and this Saturday my husband and I went to try it out for lunch. There has been quite a bit of
buzz about this stand opening at the farmers market as its owner, Pippa Calland, comes from the fine dining world, appeared on BBC America’s “Chef Race: UK vs. US” and studied the art of making the perfect taco in Mexico. I have to say that I agree with the hype... they were very tasty! You can get three tacos for $7, which is a pretty decent lunch cost. I went with two of the fish tacos and one pork. The fish tacos were my favorite! My husband also tried the chorizo and potato taco. You can tell a lot of thought and care went into every item they were serving including hand-making the corn

Farmers on Walnut is a producer-only open air farmers’ market in Camp Hill offering a wide variety of produce, meats and dairy - all produced and grown within 50 miles of the market. The indoor winter market, located in the Camp Hill Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, takes place the 1st and 3rd Thursdays through April from 3 - 6pm. Join the market back outside in May at the parking lot adjacent to the Camp Hill Borough Building, 2145 Walnut Street, Camp Hill.
Farmers on the Square is a farmer run, seasonal market that operates in downtown Carlisle. All vendors live and work within 50 miles of the town. Carlisle’s downtown square is a traditional location for a market. Between 1751 and 1952 the spot that currently holds the new Cumberland County Courthouse hosted open-air or enclosed farmers markets. Discover the bountiful and beautiful South Mountain Region with the Gettysburg Wine & Fruit Trail The Gettysburg Wine & Fruit Trail (GWFT) begins season five with new members and a new footprint of Adams, Cumberland, Franklin and northern York counties in Pennsylvania and Frederick and Washington counties in Maryland. The GWFT is the Agritourism Trail of the region that brings together the many faces of agriculture in the South Mountain Region. The GWFT began in 2009 by a group of small family farms desiring to bring travelers to Gettysburg beyond the battlefields to experience the agriculture of the region through the produce grown on their farms. The Trail has grown to include seasonal farms such as Christmas tree farms, farms with pumpkin mazes and events, the Apple Blossom Festival and the National Apple Harvest Festival. The Trail includes wineries and cideries that showcase the taste of this region with products made from the fruits of the South Mountain Region. One of the newest members, Castlerigg Wine Shop in Carlisle, brings to the Trail two wineries outside of our region: Seven Mountains Wine Cellars and The Vineyard At Grandview. Like the regional wineries, Castlerigg offers wine tastings and special events throughout the year. The Trail’s addition of breweries, distilleries and meaderies bring a full range of beverage options for every palate’s pleasure to the trail experience. The Pennsylvania cideries of the GWFT will be a feature at this year’s Apple Blossom Festival (May 34) as well as at the National Apple Harvest Festival (Oct 4-5 & 11-12). Big Hill Cider-

Looking Forward at the Future of the Automotive Hobby and Celebrating Its Past.

hat makes Carlisle, Pennsylvania so unique? It’s the home of Carlisle Events and the Carlisle Fairgrounds, one of the preferred automotive destinations for enthusiasts and collector car hobbyists worldwide. The 2014 season marks the 40th anniversary of Carlisle Events and the event simply known as Fall Carlisle. The event plays host to thousands of collector and classic automotive enthusiasts, who travel to the 150-acre Carlisle PA Fairgrounds from all points of the globe to buy, sell and celebrate all things automotive. Prior to Carlisle Events’ emergence, anyone interested in restoring or showing 1950s- or 1960s-era cars had few options. That all changed when Chip Miller and Bill Miller, Jr. became friends through a mutual interest in cars of the 1950s. Together they began going to car shows and swap meets, where like-minded individuals would hunt for parts and accessories to restore their vehicles. A need for these events became obvious to these two men in 1973. Until that time, the only cars deemed worthy to collect were pre-WWII automobiles. What started in 1974 by two friends has evolved into one of the most revered collector car outlets in the world. Carlisle Events has grown from their initial event offering in 1974 to 14 events held annually in Pennsylvania and Florida. The schedule includes a sport and outdoor event and 13 automotive themed weekends; five of which are swap meet/car corral focused. In addition, there are four collector car auctions presented by Carlisle Auctions. The best part of attending at Carlisle in today’s age of collector car showcases is that the eight remaining automotive dates offer something unique for everyone. Many of the shows are the largest of their type in the world and in most cases the world comes to Carlisle. As the company celebrates 40 years, Carlisle Events has truly been the destination for all things automotive and its slogan states exactly why you should step foot on grounds – The Cars, The People and the Excitement.
