Acura MDX: luxury and safety By Mike Blake

Acura began marketing its luxury SUV, the MDX, in 2001, replacing the underselling SLX. Acura chose MDX as the utility vehicle’s badge, to signify “Multi-Dimensional luXury,” and as a midsize crossover, it lives up to its initials. With solid fuel economy — an estimated 23 mpg average — a redesigned exterior that calls attention to it lavishness, a tech and comfort-filled cabin that seats seven, and a perfect five stars in NHTSA crash tests with “Good” IIHS scores for safety, the 2014 Acura MDX offers multidimensional luxury at about a $60,000 price tag.

Lighter construction

The third-generation MDX gets an all-new platform for 2014, replacing the underpinnings that is shared with the Honda Pilot and Odyssey. The new base provides an increase in interior room, 2.8-inch longer wheelbase, and a lower and narrower stance for improved stability and fuel efficiency. Utilizing high-strength steel, aluminum and magnesium components comprising 64 percent of its body structure, the 2014 MDX is 275 pounds lighter than the previous model — and the lightest luxury SUV in the midsize ranks. Developed and engineered in North America, MDX is produced at Acura’s stateof-the-art manufacturing facility in Lincoln, Ala. The family-friendly, seven-passenger crossover is enhanced by a redesigned MacPherson strut front suspension and

ness and elegant softness that replace the previous generation’s harsher exterior, MDX measures 193.6 inches long, 77.2 inches wide and 66.7 inches high on a 111-inch wheelbase, MDX has a ground clearance of 7.3 inches empty and 5.3 inches full, weighing in with a curbweight of only 4,063 pounds with the Tech and Elegant exterior Entertainment packages. In addition to its new apSculpted with round-

pearance, the 2014 MDX has added a plethora of new standard features including Keyless Access System with Push Button Start, Jewel Eye LED headlights, exterior and interior LED lighting, extended slide secondrow seating with one-touch walk-in for third-row access, an 8-inch on-demand multi-information display touchscreen, expanded view driver’s mirror, a powerful 432-watt Acura sound system with eight speakers, and acoustic glass front windows and windshield. MDX also offers a remote-linked power-operated tailgate, heated front seats, multiview rear camera, tri-zone, automatic climate control, USB Audio Interface with iPod integration and Bluetooth HandsFreeLink wireless telephone interface.

Performance gains While the new MDX loses about 10 horsepower from the Gen-Two powerplant, it gains effectiveness, econ-

omy and quietness. The old 3.7-liter engine was noisy in the cabin and was not as responsive as the new 3.5liter that offers an 8 percent increase in torque at engine speeds below 2,750 rpm, quietness that is appreciated in the cabin and an EPA rating of 20/28/23 mpg. Supplying 290 hp and 267 pound-foot of torque, the i-VTEC V-6 engine with Variable Cylinder Management is coupled with a sixspeed Sequential SportShift with paddle shifters to display good passing power and decent off-the-line speed. A trip to the track showed a 6.8 second zero-to-60 mph sprint and a 15.3-second quarter-mile. The system also lives up to its econo-rep for the niche. After 500 miles of test runs in mixed-use circumstances, my review MDX yielded an economy average 24.1 mpg. While I wouldn’t recommend extreme off-road challenges with this cross-

over, the suspension was equal to most pothole tasks, and the quiet cabin was stable with responsive steering and surprisingly minimal yaw and wobble during quick maneuvers.

Cabin filled with extras

Inside, MDX is luxurious, quiet, roomy, and filled with tech, safety and convenience, though that might also be due to the option packages installed. The Tech Package added such items as Acura Navigation System, AcuraLink® RealTime Traffic, blind spot information system, forward collision warning and lane departure warning systems. The Entertainment package added Acura DVD Rear Entertainment System, 9-inch full VGA screen and heated rear seats. The Advance Package added perforated Milano premium stain resistant leather-trimmed interior, heated and ventilated See MDX, E3

Beetle marks its 65th year in U.S. By Ann M. Job For The Associated Press

Sixty-five years after the first Volkswagen Beetle arrived in the United States as a distinctively shaped, little car, the Beetle keeps attracting buyers with its morespacious-than-ever, flexible interior, turbo engine power and modernized iconic look. For 2014, the Beetle lineup gets a new, performanceoriented trim name — RLine — with beefier bumpers and a limited-edition, bright yellow GSR model. In addition, all Beetles now have independent rear suspension for an improved ride. The 2014 Beetle threedoor hatchback also received the top overall score of five out of five stars in federal government crash testing. Meantime, buyers of all 2014 Beetles, even the base model, get standard Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity; six-way adjustable front seats with lumbar adjustment; power, one-touch side windows; leather-wrapped, multifunction steering wheel, and three-color ambient interior lighting. Starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including destination charge, is $21,115 for a base 2014 Beetle with 170-horsepower, 2.5-liter, naturally aspirated, gasoline four cylinder and five-speed, manual transmission, according to VW’s consumer website. The lowest starting price for a 2014 Beetle with an automatic transmission is $22,215, or $1,100 more, and this is with the 170-horse five cylinder. To get a turbocharged Beetle, buyers must move up to a diesel-fueled model that has a starting retail price of $25,415 with six-speed manual, or a gasoline turbo model with a starting retail price of $25,815 with manual, according to the VW consumer pricing website. The lowest starting retail prices for 2014 Beetles with turbos and automatics are $26,515 with TDI diesel engine and $26,915 with gasoline turbo. All Beetle turbos have four cylinders. All Beetles are front-wheel drive and have

MDX Continued from E2 front seats, adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, Collision Mitigation Braking System with headsup warning, Lane Keeping Assist System and remote engine start. The cabin seats seven. Headroom is great for average folks, but crunched for the tall. Front headroom is 38.1 inches, second row is 38.3 inches and third row shows 35.6. Legroom goes 41.4, 36.6 and a very tight 28.1 in the kids’ third row. Shoulder room comes in at 61.1, 59.1 and 54.7. The 2014 MDX is available in eight model packages, from the base MDX at $42,901 to the MDX SH in AWD at $56,505. The MDX with the Technology Package starts at $46,565. Add the Entertainment Package and it starts at $48,565. My test ride was the MDX with Tech and Entertainment and the Advance Package added, for a starting point of $54,505. With a Dark Cherry Pearl Exterior and Parchment cabin, my MDX added Protection Package V (floor mats, splash guards and wheel locks) for $354, 19-inch chrome-look alloy wheels for $2,240, running boards for $699, body side molding for $259, rear bumper protector for $208, moonroof visor for $172, cargo net for $50, cargo mat for $109, cargo cover for $289, heated steering wheel for $500 and destination charges of $895 for a total of $60,280. Visit www.CarlisleEvents. com for more on the automotive hobby. Mike Blake, former editor of KIT CAR magazine, joined Carlisle Events as senior automotive journalist in 2004. He’s been a “car guy” since the 1960s and has been writing professionally for about 30 years.

All Beetles now have independent rear suspension for an improved ride. seats for four. Competitors include other small, European hatchbacks, such as the 2014 Fiat 500L that has a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $19,995 with 160-horsepower, turbocharged, gasoline four cylinder and sixspeed manual. Meantime, the base, 2014 Mini Cooper hardtop with 134-horsepower, turbocharged, gasoline, threecylinder engine and sixspeed manual has a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $20,745. Note that the 500L has seats for five people, while the Mini Cooper hardtop has seating for four. The Beetle’s first year of U.S. sales in post-World War II 1949 totaled just two cars. But popularity with young Baby Boomers swelled cumulative sales and production beyond that of the Ford Model T, to more than 15 million by the early 1970s. In its third generation, today’s Beetle posts modest numbers. Last year’s U.S. sales of 43,134 were on par with U.S. sales of Fiat 500s and 2,000 shy of Mini Cooper car sales. The 2014 Beetle, classified by the government as a compact, looks larger than expected. At 14 feet

in length from bumper to bumper and nearly 6 feet wide, it’s slightly longer and wider than the Fiat 500L and Mini Cooper hardtop. The Beetle can feel surprisingly roomy inside, too, particularly in the front, where VW’s supportive and well-shaped seats alleviate fatigue from long travels. Rear-seat headroom is 37.1 inches, and front-seat headroom tops out at 39.4 inches — a tad less than the

minimum 40.5 inches and 40.3 inches in the 500L and Mini Cooper hardtop, respectively. Still, all but the tallest, bulkiest passengers could find a comfortable seat in the test car. Rear seatbacks split 50/50 and folded down easily in the test Beetle, giving flexible seating and cargo-carrying options. Maximum cargo space is 29.9 cubic feet. Windows on the Beetle’s doors are lengthy and siz-

able, so front-seat riders don’t feel hemmed in on the sides, except for thick metal pillars at the sides of the windshields. The major adjustment in visibility came via the rear, where the tops of the rear seats clipped off some of the view. And while VW officials announced that during the 2014 model year, top-ofthe-line Beetles would get rear camera availability, this feature was not on the test Beetle that had a price tag of $32,330. Seat adjustments were manual on this test car and included round plastic dials at the sides of the front seats for seat recline that can be difficult to operate. The 2-liter turbocharged/ intercooled, gasoline four cylinder gave sprightly performance, albeit with considerable engine noise, in the tester. Low-end “oomph” came on easily, and torque from this powerplant peaks at a commendable 207 foot-pounds at a low 1,700 rpm. This surpasses the turbo torque in the base Mini Cooper hardtop and 500L. Note that Beetles with this 2-liter turbo four are renamed R-Line this model year. They used to be called Beetle Turbos. VW is replacing the Beetle’s base, non-

turbo, five-cylinder gasoline engine with a smaller, 170horsepower, 1.8-liter, turbo four cylinder and wants to differentiate the upper-level 210-horse, 2-liter turbo models with the R-Line label. The R-Line turbo that was in the tester required premium gasoline, so filling the Beetle’s 14.5-gallon tank at today’s average price for premium can top $57. With six-speed Tiptronic automatic, the tester nearly averaged the federal government’s 26 miles per gallon in combined city/highway travel. But Beetle shoppers seeking the most mileage will want a diesel, where the combined city/highway fuel mileage average is 32 mpg. Passengers heard a lot of wind and road noise in the test Beetle, which had uplevel 19-inch tires, and the ride was more compliant than sporty. Interior buttons, knobs and other controls were clearly arranged and not gimmicky. The information display screen in the center dashboard, however, looked a bit small compared to those of other carmakers such as Toyota and Honda. The 2014 Beetle’s predicted reliability is worse than average, according to Consumer Reports magazine.

Running on empty: How far can you go? Brandpoint Whether intentional or purely circumstantial, it’s likely that most experienced drivers have seen the lowfuel light illuminate their vehicle’s dashboard at least once. For some drivers, the fuel light is a source of anxiety as they search for the closest gas station. For others, it can be a bragging right, proudly boasting how far they push their gas tanks to the limit. It’s no secret that an automobile can continue to run after the fuel light comes on, but should drivers rely on the extra mileage it allows? For traveling musician Chris Jones, 30, of Sioux Falls, S.D., seeing the fuel light on his dashboard usually comes as no surprise. Jones, a professional graphic designer during the week, travels with his band across North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska and Iowa nearly every weekend of the year. “I’m constantly driving across the Midwest with my band, and I run low on gas more often than I should admit,” Jones said. “It seems the gas light always comes on when I’ve just passed the last gas station for miles. Considering the areas where I travel, I get pretty nervous about running

How far can you go when the gauge reads “E?” out of gas on the side of a remote highway. It’s not a good feeling, but I think we’ve all been there.” It’s likely most drivers would agree that the fuel light often comes on at inopportune times. Stuck in traffic on a freeway; running late for an important appointment; or driving on a country road with no towns or gas stations in sight, is when drivers decide to push the fuel gauge past the “E” signal. Some popular car models can make it between 30 and 50 miles

after the fuel light goes on, according to a study by Pick Analysis. The average Chevrolet Silverado will continue for about 33 miles beyond empty. Smaller cars like the Volkswagen Jetta average about 43 miles and the Toyota Corolla tops the list at 47 miles. Knowing how far a vehicle can drive with low fuel may be reassuring, but the effects of low-fuel driving can be damaging to the car. “When you’re running low on gas, it’s best not to push your luck,” said

Neil Hoff, a refined fuels specialist with CHS, which supplies more than 1,400 Cenex branded gas stations. “Stopping to fill up before your gas gauge hits ‘E’ could save you stress, damage to your car and time spent on the side of the road.” Hoff explains that by allowing a car to run on empty, dirt and contaminants are more likely to become suspended in the fuel and block the fuel filter. When fuel is extremely low, the fuel pump is no longer suspended in fuel and can overheat. In some cases, low fuel can even affect power steering and brakes. To avoid an expensive trip to a mechanic, Hoff advises taking a proactive approach to fueling, advising drivers to always keep at least a quarter tank of gas in the tank at all times. Running out of gas in heavy traffic is not only inconvenient but also dangerous, so Hoff recommends fueling up before getting on highways or major roads. Also, becoming familiar with where gas stations are along a driving route will also help prevent running out of gas on long trips. Always keep a gas can in the trunk in case of emergencies. “Keeping your car fueled is cheaper and safer, in the long run, than driving on empty,” Hoff said.

Hot cars at this year’s New York auto show By Dee-Ann Durbin Associated Press NEW YORK — With more than 1 million visitors annually, the New York International Auto Show is one of the most important shows for the U.S. auto industry. Here are some of the vehicles debuting this year. Subaru Outback: The newly redesigned 2015 Outback is the fifth generation of the popular crossover, which debuted 20 years ago at the New York show. The new Outback has a sharper, more premium design and more interior room. Fuel economy is improved by 3 mpg to 33 mpg on the highway with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, which gets 175

horsepower. The engine is carried over from the 2013 model year, but Subaru also improved fuel economy with features like shutters on the grill which close to improve air flow. A 3.6-liter six-cylinder with 256 horsepower is also available. Other new features include front seat cushion air bags, which help keep passengers in place in a crash, and blind spot detection and lane change assist, which alert the driver to cars in other lanes. The Outback goes on sale this summer. Pricing wasn’t announced, but Subaru says it will be similar to the outgoing model, which starts at $23,495. Alfa Romeo 4C: After a nearly 20-year absence, Italian car maker

Alfa Romeo is returning to the U.S. market. The elegant, rounded 4C sports car will go on sale in limited numbers starting in June. The company expects to sell around 800 4Cs in the U.S. this year and around 1,200 next year. The 4C two-door, rear-wheel-drive coupe, which is on display in New York, will start at around $54,000. Five hundred limited edition models will start at $70,000. The 4C has a 1.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 240 horsepower and a six-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission. It gets an estimated 28 mpg in combined city and highway driving. Honda Fit and HR-V: Honda

confirmed that its HR-V subcompact SUV, which is based on the tiny Fit, will go on sale this winter. The vehicle isn’t on display in New York, however. The new 2015 Fit is. It’s shorter and wider and has five additional cubic feet of passenger room. New features include a rearview camera and Honda’s LaneWatch system, which shows a view of the passenger side lane when the driver uses the turn signal.

Last year’s U.S. sales of 43,134 were on par with U.S. sales of Fiat 500s and 2,000 shy of Mini Cooper car sales. in length from bumper to bumper and nearly 6 feet wide, it’s slightly longer and wider than the Fiat 500L and Mini Cooper hardtop.

Natural gas pickups slow sellers so far By Ryan Holeywell Houston Chronicle

When Ford announced last summer it would sell a version of its F-150 pickup specially made to run on natural gas, many saw it as a watershed moment. Few light-duty vehicles used by everyday consumers are available in a natural gas configuration. Suddenly, the most popular model in America’s best-selling line of vehicles would come in a version that could run on the relatively cheap, clean fuel. But early sales numbers show that the public isn’t exactly clamoring for an F150 powered by compressed natural gas. Ford readies the trucks for CNG conversion on the assembly line, and contractors later perform the conversion by special customer order. Since sales began in December, just over 200 of the CNG-prepped trucks have been sold. Ford officials say they aren’t worried. “The first year is always a bit challenging because it’s new to everyone who is looking at it,’’ said Jon Coleman, Ford fleet sustainability and technology manager. “Once we get established in the market, then we’ll see the sales pick up substantially.’’ Coleman said the thirdparty modifiers that convert the vehicles only began their work in the last few months, so he doesn’t view the figures as especially low. “Having that number of orders this early on, we think, is a fairly good endorsement,’’ he said. Analysts aren’t as upbeat about the numbers, but they say that from a business perspective, it might not matter for Ford.

Since sales began in December, about 200 of the CNG-prepped F-150 Ford trucks have been sold. “You’re talking small numbers when in the U.S., 16 million vehicles could be sold this year,’’ said Christian Mayes, an analyst with Edward Jones Equity Research, referring to total projected car and truck sales in 2014. “It’s pretty niche.’’ Still, the experience with CNG-ready F-150s isn’t necessarily a dud. Mayes said Ford doesn’t have to use many resources to produce CNG-ready trucks, nor does it have to do the heavy lifting of conversion. Essentially, the CNGready F-150 is giving Ford the chance to test the waters with alternative fuel vehicles — and get some good publicity — without much cost or risk. “It’s not going to move the needle much for Ford, but it’s about giving customers choice,’’ Mayes said. Last year, Ford announced that its 2014 F-150 trucks

would come in two options beyond the typical gasoline model: one that runs on natural gas and another that can run on natural gas or gasoline. Natural gas is less expensive and produces fewer polluting emissions. Ford’s move was significant, since at the time, U.S. automakers geared most of their CNG-ready vehicles toward heavier-duty use. A version of the Honda Civic was the only natural gas-fueled personal passenger car available for sale directly to U.S. customers. For the F-150, Ford produces a vehicle that has engine components prepped to run on CNG, and then arranges to hand the trucks over to third-party modifiers to do the nuts and bolts of the conversions. Because gasoline is a liquid, it naturally lubricates the engine it powers. CNG

is a gas, so that lubrication doesn’t occur and the engine runs hotter. Ford’s CNG-prepped vehicles take that into consideration and are made with more heattolerant engines, said Paul Shaffer, managing director for the Dallas location of Westport, one of Ford’s largest modifiers.

Through the dealer Although vehicles converted to run on compressed natural gas have been in commercial fleets for years, Ford’s new system is significant for a couple of reasons. The whole transaction occurs through the dealer. Moreover, Ford honors warranties for F-150s converted to CNG by its approved modifiers, which isn’t always the case with CNG conversions. This one-step system for purchasers appeals to Cheritta Johnson, assistant

director of fleet services for the city of Dallas, which recently ordered 65 of the new F-150s. “You don’t have to deal with two different entities if it breaks down,’’ Johnson said. Dave Hurst, principal research analyst at Navigant, said the consumer market for CNG vehicles in the U.S. isn’t likely to grow soon. Only about 1,900 consumer-level CNG vehicles will be sold this year, he predicted.

29,000 vehicles By contrast, he said, fleets may buy 29,000 CNGpowered vehicles this year, mostly heavier duty trucks like Ford’s F-250 and F-350. He said part of the reason CNG demand isn’t taking off is that fuel economy for gasoline-powered vehicles is improving. Mayes said the alumi-

num body Ford is introducing on the 2015 F-150 is far more significant than this year’s natural gas model. The aluminum reduces the vehicle’s weight and makes it the most fuel-efficient F150 yet. Every step taken to improve the fuel efficiency of gasoline-powered vehicles reduces the appeal of the more costly CNG vehicles. According to Ford, an F150 Regular Cab 4x2 with a 3.7 liter V6 engine starts at $24,445. The prepping option adds another $315. Converting it to run on CNG — which involves new fuel tanks, fuel lines and fuel injectors — bumps the price tag by $7,500 to $9,500. Compressed natural gas costs about $1.25 less per equivalent gallon of gasoline, according to Energy Department figures. Even with that difference, Ford acknowledges that only higher-mileage drivers are likely to see long-term savings if they switch to CNG. “The more fuel you use, the more the econom ics makes sense,’’ Coleman said. Drivers also face the challenge of finding places to fill up. Only 686 CNG pumping stations are available to the public nationwide, according to the Energy Department. Texas has 41. Shaffer, of Westport, said most of his customers are fleet operators, because they have more predictable routes and know they’ll have access to CNG infrastructure — often at private company facilities. “We understand this will mostly be a fleet vehicle,’’ Ford spokesman Nik Ciccone said, “but it’s also a way to test the waters with consumers.’’ Zain Shauk contributed to this report.

Car buying New-look Subaru WRX an understated performer made easy:

Consider this before hitting the sales lot

By Peter Couture and Lyra Solochek Tampa Bay Times Chances are, motorists who roll up next to a redesigned-for-2015 Subaru WRX won’t give it a second look. Unlike the STI, a higher-performance version of the compact sedan, this WRX has no readyfor-takeoff rear wing to announce its capabilities. The wow factor comes when you drive it.

Buying a car may be one of the biggest purchases you make in a lifetime. When searching for the perfect car to fit your personal needs, there are many things to consider before hitting the sales lot and filling out the paperwork.
