Car of the Year: SRT Viper
This past year was an exciting automotive season for striking architecture, behemoth power upgrades, performance improvements, luxury and high tech enhancements, as well as nostalgic homages. Beginning in 2005, All About Cars has completed its calendar-year coverage with a Top-10 report on the Car of the Year. Our ninth annual list is filled with an impressive list of vehicles topped by a supercar, followed by two nostalgic reimaginings of sports power, two iconic muscle cars, an elegant English badge, a luxury American insignia, German workmanship, an SUV and the first-ever truck to make this list. While cost is no object for this grouping devoted to the best automobiles, crossovers, sports-utes and trucks I tested, the top price does not necessarily make the best vehicle. Though my top car exceeded $100,000 in price, it is interesting to note that one car was in the $30,000 range, four were in the $40,000s, one each at $50,000 and $60,000 and two cars were priced in the $80,000s. Many cars I tested from $50,000 to $150,000 didn’t make the list. My rating system is subjective and based on eight categories, with the cars given ratings of 10 for perfection down to 1 for worst possible application. The eight categories in which I judged the vehicles were: interior; safety; power; handling/ride; economy/price; looks; niche-fitting and a miscellaneous grouping in

which I took into consideration the “feel-good” factor and other intangibles. Making the list are vehicles I tested in calendar 2013, so if I drove it in 2012, or have it scheduled for 2014, it didn’t warrant consideration. I gave only five perfect 10s all year — that is, in a single category. No vehicle has ever come close to a perfect score across the board. This year, no vehicle received less than a charitable 5 in any category. While nostalgia may have been the lynchpin of this year’s top vehicles, pow-
er was a close second, as horsepower for my best of the best routinely exceeded 400 horses and even soared to 640 horsepower for the winner. I have an admitted predilection for muscle icons and for power, though luxury, top performance and style also figure in heavily. Over the past eight years, my overall winners have been: Jaguar XJ8, Lexus LS600h, Corvette ZR-1, Chevy Camaro, Audi A8L, Ford Mustang, Mercedes Benz C63 AMG Coupe and Lexus LFA. Our ninth annual list is topped by an American icon originally dreamed up by Carroll Shelby, and brought back this year to knock our socks off.
No. 1: SRT Viper American supercar full of venom and style — $115,285. On hiatus for two years, Viper is back with a more rounded look, added comforts, tech, power, a new suspension, advanced aerodynamics packages and an 18-speaker premium audio system It’s all-aluminum 8.4-liter, V-10 engine thunders out 640 horsepower and 600 lbs.-ft. of torque — the most torque of any naturally aspirated sports car engine in the world. EPA rated at 13 mpg city/18 mpg highway.
Corvette still reigns supreme on America’s highways. Its 427 engine roars out 505 horsepower and 470 lbs.-ft. of torque. EPA rated at 15/24.

The first truck ever to make my top 10 list, the F-150 SVT Raptor is a dedicated offroad performer with exterior aggressiveness, badges and a “cool” factor. Electronics abound inside. Its V-8 explodes out 411 horsepower and 434 lbs.-ft. of torque, good for 11 city/16 highway.
