2014 Chevrolet Cruze: Popular compact adds a diesel option One of the seven bestselling sedans in America this year is the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze, and it continues to attract buyers with its economical capabilities and some spiffy cosmetic and comfort upgrades.

Traditional and diesel options Built in Lordstown, Ohio, Cruze adds to its capabilities with an all-new, 2-liter clean turbo-diesel-powered model that achieves an EPA-estimated 46 mpg highway – better than any non-hybrid or gasoline passenger car in America. The turbo diesel delivers 151 horsepower and an impressive 264 pounds per foot of torque and can travel 717 miles on a single tank. For those who prefer traditional gasoline engines, Cruze accelerates with either a 1.8-liter I-4 engine that is rated at 138 horsepower and 125 pounds per foot of torque with an EPA estimate of 22/35 for the automatic, or an Ecotec 1.4liter I-4 turbo engine with variable valve timing that puts out 138 horsepower and 148 pounds per foot of torque and is EPA estimated at 26/39. My Cruze LTZ test ride was equipped with the 1.4-liter I-4 turbo and in mixed-use driving, I averaged of 33.1 mpg.

European styling The four-door, 5-passenger Cruze doesn’t skimp on construction quality as it is built with a steel body frame integral (unibody) that has front and rear crumple zones; galvanized steel front fenders, hood, roof, door panels, one-piece bodyside outer panel and thermal plastic olefin bumper fascias. Cruze has European-inspired architecture, giving it a more sporty look than one would expect from an economical compact. Created to look cool rather than economical, Cruze features a two-tier grille with Chevrolet’s gold bowtie logo, an arching roofline that connects a steeply raked windshield and fast-sloping rear pillars that provide a trendy coupe-like proportion.

By Mike Blake

Prominent headlamp housings wrap around the corners and sweep upward into the fenders and hood. The short rear deck is typically found on sport coupes and wheels are planted at the corners with minimal front and rear overhangs, which make the car appear longer. A true compact, Cruze specs in at 181 inches long, 70.7 inches wide and 58.1 inches high on a 105.7-inch wheelbase and weighs in with a curbweight of 3,155 lbs. And new exterior colors for 2014 include Red Hot, Rainforest Green Metallic, Tungsten Metallic and Blue Ray Metallic.

Dependable performance My test Cruze LTZ and its 1.4-liter I-4 turbo were mated to a six-speed automatic transmission to provide niche-worthy performance. Created for dependability and economy, you can get speed when asked, after slight hesitation, but passing at speed takes some strategy before the pop kicks in, and uphill grades are overcome confidently. On the track, my test vehicle finished a zero-to60 mph run in a slow, but steady 9.5 seconds while completing a quarter-mile in 17.3 seconds. Cruze was more exciting on the autocross, showing noticeable understeer but surprising stability and smoothness from its rackmounted electric power steering. StabiliTrak electronic stability control with traction control, rollover mitigation and anti-lock brakes are standard, and its MacPherson strut front suspension and technically advanced Z-link rear deliver a balanced ride.

Loaded cabin Cruze’s cabin is filled with standard infotainment and safety technologies including Chevrolet MyLink with Bluetooth streaming audio for music and select phones; voice recognition for phone, music and radio; Pandora and Stitcher Smartphone compatibility and Gracenote (playlist and album art) capability. The cabin seats five with 39.3 inches of front headroom and 37.9 inches in row two. Legroom is 42.3 inches up front and 35.4 for second-seaters and shoulder room is 54.7 and 53.9. Cruze’s safety is attended to with 10 standard air bags including front airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, frontand rear-seat-mounted side airbags and two-row side curtain airbags; and it has received an overall perfect five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Built into its safety system are a rigid high-strength steel safety cage, front passenger seat occupant sensing system and rollover sensing and protection system, collapsible pedal assembly to help protect against lower-extremity injuries, and Chevrolet’s Onstar system. The 2014 Chevrolet Cruze is available in 9 trims, encompassing manual and automatic configuration, plus a Diesel Automatic. The LS Manual bases at $18,345 including $825 for Destination and Freight and $19,539 for the LS Automatic. The 1LT manual starts at $19,840, the ECO Manual at $20,760, the 2LT Manual at $22,120, my test LTZ Automatic based at $24,630 and the Diesel Automatic goes for $25,810 stock. My LTZ in Silver Ice Metallic paint mated to a Jet Black Leather interior, added the Sun, Sound and Sport Package for $1,995 and encompassed a power sunroof , Pioneer premium nine-speaker audio system, unique front and rear fascias, lower body moldings, rear spoiler, fog lamps and uplevel instrument cluster with chrome trim rings. Fidel’s former limos being reborn as Havana taxicabs By Peter Orsi The Associated PRess HAVANA — In a former life they were the “comandante’s” cars: A fleet of black, boxy, Soviet-made limousines that for years were at the disposal of the presidency in Fidel Castro’s Cuba. Today the limos have been decommissioned and repurposed as Havana taxi cabs, at the service of tourists who want a little slice of history to go with their ride across town. “When I tell (travelers) where the car came from, they sit in the seat back there and ... stretch their legs and say, ‘I can’t believe it!’” said Moises Suarez, 58, who has been behind the wheel of one of the expresidential limos for the last three years. The luxury automobiles were produced by Russian manufacturers GAZ and ZIL in the 1960s and ‘70s. Those sent to Cuba reportedly included a ZIL111 convertible model that was the first of its kind to roll off the assembly line, a personal gift to Castro from Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. They were often used to ferry around visiting dignitaries. At least one of the limos was used occasionally by Castro himself, though he usually preferred a military-style jeep for his own

When former U.S. President Jimmy Carter paid a historic visit in 2002, Castro — who always had a flair for stagemanship — picked him up at the airport in a Soviet stretch despite the fact that by that time the presidency had acquired a fleet of slick Mercedes Benzes. Suarez, who drives for state-owned Cubataxi, said about 14 of the cars passed into the hands of the company about five years ago, and 10 are still on the road. Many aspects of his GAZbuilt Chaika — Russian for “seagull” — are original, from the camel-colored headliner to the radio with its buttons and knobs labeled in Cyrillic lettering. At some point a Mercedes engine was swapped in, however, similar to the way that 1950s Detroit classics in Havana are still running thanks to makeshift monkeywrenching. On the driver’s-side door, Suarez has affixed a small sign that says “Smile, Jesus loves you” — a small irony for a country that was officially atheist for decades under Castro (the policy was removed from the constitution in the 1990s). SPIELBERG, Austria — Red Bull’s hopes for a triumph on its home circuit were dampened Friday as Mercedes regained its dominance in Formula One, clearly setting the pace on the opening day of practice for the Austrian Grand Prix. With Daniel Ricciardo’s maiden victory in Canada two weeks ago, Red Bull ended a six-race winning streak by Mercedes but the Australian driver and his teammate Sebastian Vettel did not come close to matching their rival’s speed on the Red Bull Ring. Lewis Hamilton beat teammate Nico Rosberg to the fastest time in the second practice. Hamilton completed his best lap on the 4.3-kilometer (2.7-mile) track in 1 minute, 9.542 seconds, topping Rosberg by 0.377. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso was almost a second off the lead in third. Vettel came sixth, more than 1.4 seconds behind Hamilton, while Ricciardo posted the eighth fastest time. Mercedes also came 1-2 in the opening practice, with Rosberg beating Hamilton by 0.140. “It’s so close between the two of us,” Rosberg said about the fight with Hamilton for pole position. “I’m hoping we will still have

the edge on everybody else. That seems to be the case today.” However, Hamilton said he wouldn’t mind if Rosberg started in front of him on Sunday. “ H u n t i n g d e f i n i te ly brings out the better side,” the 2008 F1 champion said. “When you are in front, you feel vulnerable and any mistake you make you are going to be caught.” In the morning session, Ricciardo and Vettel came only 13th and 15th respectively. “We clearly did better in the afternoon,” Vettel said. “We are not there where we want to be when it comes to speed ... but it will be warmer on Saturday and Sunday and I think that will bring us closer.” In the first session, Vettel brought his car back to the garage undamaged following a spectacular incident in the final turn. He came off the track and spun twice on the grass before the car came to a standstill on the track again. “That wasn’t planned of course,” the four-time champion said. “I went too wide and the wet grass was slippery.” Ricciardo also spun on the same spot shortly afterward, prompting team boss Christian Horner to joke “they were just warming up the crowd.”

A bit of muscle in the milk The Super Sport name has been synonymous with performance, and this year’s rendition lives up to that promise. The brawny LS3 blazed down the quartermile in 13.2 seconds, and tore off a zero-to-60 mph run in just 4.7 seconds at the track. On the highway, the ride was quiet, controlled, confident and unhesitating in all ranges. During even the most extreme turning tests, steering was sure, wobble and yaw were minimal, traction was sticky and braking secure. The engine set-up is EPA rated at 14 mpg in the city and 21 on the highway, and while my long highway treks saw better-than-expected fuel efficiency, quick starts and city stop lights brought the overall gas average down to a mixed-use average of 16.1 mpg.

2015 Lexus RX: Luxury SUV GM could face doesn’t miss a beat or a step another fine for By Ann Job The Associated Press Buyers of luxury sport utility vehicles keep choosing one SUV — the Lexus RX — in greater numbers than any other. It’s easy to see why. The RX is a smartly sized and quiet, refined family vehicle with luxury appointments, good fuel economy and flexible seating and cargo space. It has upscale looks, and fit and finish can be top notch. Now into its 16th year, the RX also has a reputation for reliability. Consumer Reports said it expects much better than average reliability for the current RX and lists the RX as a recommended buy. Even price increases and the lack of a third row of seats haven’t stopped the RX from leading others in the luxury SUV segment. Last calendar year, for example, RX sales in the United States topped 100,000, which has been a regular occurrence for this SUV since its 1998 introduction. The second best-selling premium- or luxury-branded SUV last year was the Buick Enclave, whose sales tallied just over 60,000. For 2015, the base retail price for the five-seat RX goes up by $1,035 to $41,705. This is for a 2015 RX 350 with front-wheel drive and 270horsepower V-6 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The lowest starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including destination charge, for a 2015 RX 350 with all-weather drive — Lexus doesn’t call it all-wheel drive — also is increased $1,035 to $43,105.

The RX comes in higherpriced models, too, such as the gasoline-electric hybrid RX 450h. This fuel-thrifty version starts at $48,355 and has a government fuel economy rating of 32 miles per gallon in city driving and 28 mpg on the highway. The combined city/highway mileage rating of 30 mpg for the front-wheel drive RX hybrid is 43 percent higher than the 21-mpg combined city/highway rating for a non-hybrid, frontwheel drive, 2015 RX 350. Buyers surely can find luxury SUVs with lower starting prices. The 2015 Acura RDX, for example, has a starting retail price of $35,790 with front-wheel drive, 273horsepower V-6 and sixspeed automatic. Another competitor — the 2014 Lincoln MKX — has a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $39,470 for a front-wheel drive model with 305-horsepower V-6 and six-speed automatic. Lexus, which is Toyota’s luxury brand, hasn’t strayed far from the successful formula it initiated with the very first RX. Styling inside and out is not garish or showy, but the leather is soft enough to impress and shiny wood trim looks real. Powe r f ro m t h e c u rrent 3.5-liter, four cam V6 comes on smoothly and steadily. In all but the most aggressive driving, shifts from the automatic transmission are not noticeable. There’s decent low-end “oomph” when starting up from a stop. But the RX 350’s peak torque of 248 foot-pounds at 4,700 rpm is less than

The 2015 Lexus RX has been a consistent seller thus far. what some competitors offer. There are 280 footpounds of torque at 4,000 rpm in the Lincoln MKX and 251 foot-pounds of torque at 5,000 rpm in the Acura RDX. The test 2015 RX 350 was driven with some spirited accelerations and more leisurely, fuel-conserving segments. On average, the vehicle averaged 20.6 mpg, which is nearly equal to the government’s 21-mpg fuel economy rating. The RX 350 needs only regular gasoline, so filling the 19.2-gallon tank cost $70 at today’s prices. The suspension muted many road bumps, but the ride was not overly compliant. The interior was quiet for easy conversing. Most controls are easy to find and easy to operate. The test 2015 RX 350 was one of the easiest to connect to an Android cell phone, and it didn’t take a lot of looking through menus on a display screen to accomplish the linkup. But the position of the gated gear shift lever — an-

gled out from the bottom middle of the dashboard — took some practice to get into “Drive.” Plus, the center console sits up a good bit between the front seats and can impinge on knee room. Other controls, such as for mirrors and windows, and the audio and ventilation controls are in familiar locations and have good-sized buttons. So, it does not take a lot of time to get inside the RX 350, get situated and then drive away. The RX 350 test SUV included a rectangular “mouse” that was fixed to part of the center console. A resting place for a person’s hand was just behind it to provide some bracing when the mouse control is moved. But the space devoted to the mouse and the hand resting spot meant only two cupholders were available for open, visible storage. Everything else had to go in the covered center console or glovebox, and when the cupholders were filled, the driver lacked for a easyto-reach spot for cell phone, keys or key fob.

DETROIT — An old email from a General Motors employee warning of a “serious safety problem” could help trigger another government fine against the automaker. The Aug. 30, 2005, e-mail surfaced Wednesday during a House subcommittee hearing on GM’s delayed recall of 2.6 million small cars with ignition switch problem. This email outlined a similar issue with a larger car. Employee Laura Andres wrote that she was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Impala home from work when she hit a bump and the engine stalled on busy Interstate 75 near Detroit. The car behind her had to swerve to avoid a crash. A GM mechanic told her the cause was likely a faulty ignition switch. “I think this is a serious safety problem ... I’m thinking big recall,” Andres wrote in an e-mail to 11 GM colleagues. Yet it wasn’t until Monday that GM recalled the Impalas, Buick LaCrosses and other models with the same switch, almost nine years after Andres’ e-mail. Safety regulators received dozens of similar complaints about the cars during that time. GM said that excess weight on a keychain could cause the ignition switch to move out of the “run” position if the car is jarred,

like when it hits a pothole. The engine stalls, and the drivers loses power steering and power brakes. Under federal law, automakers must notify the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration within five business days of determining a safety defect exists. A maximum $35 million fine is possible if the agency finds an automaker took too long to report a problem. GM paid a $35 million fine last month for its 11-year delay in reporting defective ignition switches in the Chevrolet Cobalt and other small cars. Multiple fines are not without precedent. From 2010 through 2012, NHTSA fined Toyota Motor Corp. four times for a total of $66 million due to safety-related violations. GM wouldn’t comment Thursday on the possibility of another fine. NHTSA also wouldn’t comment on the Impala case, but said it reviews all recalls to make sure they comply with the notification law and it takes “appropriate action” when it finds problems. Andres’s e-mail alone isn’t enough to trigger the five-day rule, because it only suggests the ignitions are unsafe. But it’s proof that some GM employees knew about a potential problem for almost a decade. GM has not yet submitted a required timeline to NHTSA that will say when it officially determined the Impala switches were defective.

gine cover added $395. Destination freight added $995 and the gas guzzler tax of $1,300 put the price as tested at $47,720. Visit www.CarlisleEvents. com for more on the automotive hobby.

Impala recall By Dee-Ann Durbin and Tom Krisher The Associated Press

The Associated Press
