2013 Hyundai Elantra is an elegant family car

In the third year of its fifth generation, the Hyundai Elantra continues its trek toward gaining awards, sales and recognition as an affordable upscale family car that handles well and provides comfort. Last year, Elantra earned accolades as the 2012 North American Car of the Year and Best Family Car of the Year. This year, it has added kudos for safety and style. New for 2013 are upgrades to standard equipment including air-conditioning, 16- versus 15-inch wheels, cruise control, telescopic steering wheel and solar glass with windshield shade band. The Elantra Limited, which I tested, adds a standard power driver’s seat with power lumbar support and an available Dual Automatic Temperature Control with Clean Air Ionizer and Auto Defog System as part of the Limited Technology Package.

Fluidic sculpture

Hyundai has built Elantra with what it calls “Fluidic sculpture”. The phrase is used to convey the illusion of constant motion with flowing lines along the sides, a strong undercut feature line starting at the front door, muscular wheel arches, and a sleek roof line, in an aerodynamic package. Elantra is bold and elegant with a hexagonal black chrome front grille and detailed swept-back headlights. The combination of 16-inch alloy wheels, bodycolor door handles and mirrors, rear defroster, remote keyless entry system with alarm, daytime running lights, fog lights, dual heated power outside mirrors and power tiltand-slide sunroof provide a catlike demeanor and a prey-hunting stance. The Elantra Limited I tested weighed in at 2761 lbs. (curbweight) with dimensions of 178.3 inches in

length, 69.9 inches in width and 56.5 inches in height, with a minimum ground clearance of 5.5 inches on a 106.3-inch wheelbase.

Refined 4-cylinder engine Elantra is powered by a refined 1.8-liter Nu fourcylinder engine rated at 148 horsepower and 131 lbs.ft. of torque. The engine’s aluminum block with a cast iron cylinder liner, cylinder head and crank is 30 percent lighter than an iron block, some 74 pounds lighter, while still providing comparable strength. Meshed with Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing camshafts and hydraulic engine mounts, the Elantra powerplant is EPA rated at 28 mpg in city driving and 38 mpg on the highway. My examination in mixed-use driving situations showed an average of 32.9 mpg.

Quiet ride

Pampering cabin Hyundai has created a pampering, intuitive familyoriented cabin with roominess in front and adequate space in row two. Front headroom is comfortable at 40.0 inches in the front row and 37.1 inches in row two. Front legroom is a generous 43.6 inches in the first seats, but a very tight 33.1 inches for the back-seat passengers. Shoulder room is accommodating in front with 55.9 inches and in back with 54.8 inches. While Elantra does employ plastic on many interior surfaces, it is generally utilized in an attractive manner. Elsewhere, the cabin is a cornucopia of upscale amenities with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather shift knob and seating surfaces, heated front and rear seats, 6way adjustable driver’s seat, one-touch up drivers window, AM/FM/XM Satellite Radio/CD/MP3 audio system with six speakers and iPod/USB auxiliary input jacks, air conditioning prep package, trip computer, power windows, tilt steering wheel, front 2-speed intermittent wipers, map lights with sunglass holder, dome lamp and cargo area light. For those who rely on their automobiles to haul and store everything from groceries to camping gear to golf clubs to school projects, trunk space measures nearly 15 cubic feet, and the 60/40 folding rear seats increase capacity even more.

With a quiet ride, Elantra is tentative though smooth. Understeer is apparent in quick engagements, but when cruising, there is little or no float. I found acceleration came hesitantly, however Elantra is a slow-butsteady performer, smoothly finishing a zero-to-60 mph run in 9.2 seconds, while taking down a quarter-mile challenge in a slow-butenjoyable 17 seconds flat. On the highway, Elantra has ample power to succeed in long uphill situations, but at speed, acceleration needs some strategizing before passing is attempted because throttle response is tentative. pressure monitoring system. The 2013 Hyundai Elantra in Base GLS trim starts at $16,965. I tested the Elantra Limited, which started at $21,115, about $1400 above last year. The Technology Package added $2350 (about $400 more than last year) for a Navigation system with 7-inch screen, rearview camera, 360-watt premium audio with external amplifier, dual automatic temperature control with CleanAir Ionizer and defogger, automatic head lamps, proxim-
