Lady Tigers ready for volleyball district By MINDY BLANKEMEYER mnblankemeyer@aol.com

The Sealy Lady Tiger volleyball team is on track and getting ready to start district play Tuesday night. Despite a loss last Tuesday to La Grange of 25-20, 15-25, 24-26, 20-25, the Lady Tigers came back on Friday to defeat Bellville 21-25, 21-25, 25-14, 25-22, 15-3, bringing their season record to 22-11. Monday afternoon before the La Grange match, Coach Jennifer Vaden found out that her starting libero Hope Zaruba, was pulled from action by her doctor due to a stress injury that was not healing properly. “We had to make some last-minute adjustments and did the best we could,” Vaden said. Zaruba reported that she should only be out for about two weeks. Vaden used Rylee Novicke in the libero position during the La Grange match. The Lady Tigers started out strong in match one, holding their own against the stout La Grange team. The long haul of the La Grange defense was too much to handle and they lost the next four matches. Standouts in the La Grange game were Maelee Sowa with 17 kills and 10 digs, Madison Luther with 11 kills, Rayann Rabius with nine kills and 23 digs, Amber Klepser with 13 digs and 41 assists, LaShanda Fitzgerald with seven kills, Laura Richardson with two blocks, and Novicke with 14 digs. “Our girls kept scoring and that’s what I asked of them,” Vaden said. “They weren’t timid and

afraid. We are only getting better from here. I am very proud of them.” On Friday, the Lady Tigers hosted Bellville. Even though the Battle of Mill Creek has always been considered a football fight, it carries over into all sports when these two teams meet up. Sealy defeated Bellville earlier in the season during tournament play. Bellville has struggled this season to find its perfect lineup. They lost several longtime starters at graduation, and are in a rebuilding stage. In the first two matches, Bellville stood strong and played well, defeating the Lady Tigers 21-25 in both matches. In match two, Vaden made the decision to swap liberos and placed sophomore Madison Klotz on the court. Match three was the turnaround for the whole game. The Lady Tigers came out and stood their ground and found their rhythm on the court, defeating Bellville 25-14. Match four was a definite battle with long volleys and tough defense on both sides, but Sealy prevailed 25-22. Match five, the Lady Tigers owned convincingly, with a win of 15-3, winning the game. Stand outs for the Bellville game were Rayann Rabius with 20 kills and 12 digs, Amber Klepser with 39 assists and 17 digs, Madison Luther with 10 kills and one block, Maelee Sowa with 10 kills and 12 digs, LaShanda Fitzgerald with four blocks, Laura Richardson with three blocks, and Madison Klotz with 13 digs. District play started Tuesday night when the Lady Tigers hosted Bay City.

Blinn sweeps Coastal Bend Blinn College volleyball was going after every loose ball and hitting well at the net for points as the Buccaneers completed a 3-0 sweep of Coastal Bend College Saturday afternoon inside the PE Building in Brenham. The Buccaneers won by the score of 25-8, 25-14 and 25-18 to improve its overall record to 13-7 and the Region XIV record also improved to 2-1. “Our effort was strong tonight and even our swings were aggressive,” said Blinn head coach Kalie Mader. “We wanted to follow the same theme as last night of scoring more points on our own and we did that.” Blinn had a very bal-

anced effort on the offensive end as Eboni Mitchell led the team with eight kills, six digs and a .353 hitting percentage. Abolanle Onipede and Alexis Kingston each finished with seven kills and the team combined for a .406 hitting percentage. Serving was also a big strength was the Buccaneers combined for 18 aces as Coastal Bend had trouble defending the aggressive serve style of Blinn. Jordyn Keamo finished with 31 assists in the victory. The Buccaneers jumped out to an 11-2 lead after an ace from Dana Teets in the first set. The set didn’t get any better for Coastal Bend as Blinn kept its foot on the gas and closed

out the first with a 25-8 victory. The second set was slightly closer but Blinn was still able to hold on to the momentum and lead 18-10 in the second after an ace from Kingston. The Buccaneers closed out the second set 25-14 to grab a 2-0 lead in sets. Coastal Bend gave its best effort in the third set, keeping the set close. Down the stretch though, the Buccaneers were able to pull away as Keamo sealed the sweep with an ace for a 25-18 victory in the third.

Lady Tigers dominating district By MINDY BLANKEMEYER mnblankemeyer@aol.com

The Lady Tigers were on fire in district play this week, and 17 was the magic number. Sealy defeated Wharton on Tuesday in three games, 25-13, 25-17, 25-14, then took down Brookshire Royal in three games as well, 25-4, 25-13, and 25-8. The Lady Tigers did not allow more than 17 points in any match this week solidifying their presence on the court as they come together to find their place in district. Sealy is now 25-11 for the season and 3-0 in district, and a huge win on Tuesday was the confidence booster the girls needed to keep their heads up and the team moving forward. Wharton had a hard time Tuesday finding their grove on the court and getting into a rhythm to pull out any significant points against Sealy. Libero Hope Zaruba returned to the court on Tuesday, but only for limited play time. Zaruba, who does not want to aggravate her

injury, is only playing enough to stay in action, but not overdo it. Playmakers for the Wharton game were Madison Luther with eight kills and two blocks, Rayann Rabius with eight kills and seven digs, LaShanda Fitzgerald with seven kills and one block, Laura Richardson with five kills and one block, Amber Klepser with 31 assists and seven digs, and Zaruba with seven digs. Friday, Sealy hosted Brookshire Royal and felt like royalty when the game was over. A quick three in, three out kept pace with the previous two district games and they walked out with their heads held high. Amber Klepser opened match one with a serve that couldn’t be defended and placed four aces on the board right away. In match two, the Lady Tigers gave up a few more points than in match one, but kept the Lady Falcons in check with good defense and quick feet for their kill attempts.

Standout performances on Friday against Royal were Rayann Rabius with 12 kills, Maelee Sowa with eight kills and two aces, Madison Luther with four kills and five aces, Amber Klepser with 27 assists, four aces, and eight digs and Hope Zaruba with four digs and four aces. Sowa gave some team insight after the game and where they plan to go next. “Right now we are very close to coming together on the court, it’s like we are just an inch away,” she said. “We are working on our plays in practice, and it’s getting there. We are working on taking each game and play one at a time, and not letting these teams get into our heads. We gotta shake it off and just have fun.” The next two district games will bring major competition and test the team’s abilities. First on Tuesday, Sealy hosted Columbus, who is known to bring a lot of height and talent, On Friday, Sealy will travel to El Campo.

Start Your Own Investment “Traditions” Thanksgiving is just around the corner. And like all holidays, this one has plenty of traditions, such as Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (started in 1924) and football (the first broadcast Thanksgiving Day game was played between the Detroit Lions and the Chicago Bears in 1934). Traditions are important, and you may want to establish some in one of the key activities of your own life: investing. So, what sort of investment traditions could you start? Here are a few ideas:

Do great things with Kubota’s RTV X-Series utility vehicles.

• Invest regularly. By definition, engaging in a tradition means performing the same acts over and over. This type of behavior can impose discipline and consistency to your investing. For example, consider contributing the same amount of money each month to the same investments. When the price of these investments is down, your contribution will pay for more shares – in other words, you’ll be “buying low,” one of the key principals of investing. And when the price of your investments is up, you’ll be a savvy enough investor to buy fewer shares. Over a long period, this technique can help lower the per-share price of your investments, but it does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss. To make it easier to follow through, you could set up monthly, automatic purchases of these investments from your checking or savings account. • Increase 401(k) contributions when you get a raise. Why not make it a tradition to boost your contributions to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored plan every time your salary increases? Your 401(k) is a great way to save for retirement, as your contributions are typically made with pretax

dollars, resulting in lower taxable income, and your earnings can grow on a tax-deferred basis. Even if you don’t reach the contribution limit (which, in 2015, is $18,000, or $24,000 if you’re 50 or older), you can help yourself make progress toward your retirement goals if you give your 401(k) a “raise” every time you get one. • Review your progress at least once a year. Pick one day a year – perhaps a “milestone” day, such as your birthday or wedding anniversary – to review your overall investment picture. Are your investments performing the way you had hoped? Is your portfolio properly diversified, or are there gaps you need to address? Are you investing too aggressively or too conservatively? A yearly review of your investments and long-term financial strategy, possibly with the help of a financial advisor, can help keep you on track toward your objectives. Of course, you don’t need to wait 12 months before looking over your situation; you may need to adjust your holdings during the course of any given year, in response to changes in the financial markets or your individual needs. But by committing yourself to at least one full-scale review a year, you can greatly reduce unpleasant “surprises” while staying abreast of exactly where you are and where you’re headed. On Thanksgiving, you can enjoy the holiday’s traditions, along with those that may be unique to your family. And someday, you may well be thankful that you followed some productive investment “traditions.” This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

Playoff season ends to Silsbee, 35-21 By MINDY BLANKEMEYER mnblankemeyer@aol.com

On Friday, Nov. 20, the Tigers traveled to Shenandoah for the area playoffs to face the Silsbee Tigers and fell in a shattering loss 35-21. The Tigers came in ready to fight Friday night and they proved that in the first quarter when they took their first possession down the field for a touchdown right away. Jason Mackey took the kickoff back to their own 33-yard line. Two first downs later, it was Mackey who caught a 15-yard pass from Kolby Wolfe at the back of the end zone for the first touchdown of the game. Stephen Rosas’s extra point was good. Sealy 7, Silsbee 0. At kickoff after the touchdown, Sealy decided to gamble with an onside kick and won big! TJ Theriot was spot on for the Tigers setting them up to take over at the Silsbee 40-yard line. Deshawn Davis marched the ball down the field with one handoff after another until a final handoff from Wolfe around the left side put him in the end zone for

a second touchdown for the Tigers in the first quarter. The extra kick by Rosas was good. Sealy 14, Silsbee 0. At the last seconds of the first quarter, Silsbee scored their first touchdown of the night, then attempted a two-point conversion which was successful, ending the first quarter Sealy14, Silsbee 8. Silsbee had their second touchdown with a long run to the end zone. A failed attempt at a two-point conversion evened out the score at 14-14 with 8:20 left in the half. Sealy unable to produce points to take the lead punted back to Silsbee who took the ball in for their third touchdown of the night. Silsbee then kicked an extra point to pull ahead of the Tigers 21-14 with 4:56 left in the half. Sealy quarterback Wolfe gave it all he had nearing the end of the half, and on a fourthand-4, he ran to the outside being taken down within inches of the goal line taking the Tigers chances of tying up the scoreboard at the half. The third quarter of play went almost score-
