Tigers drop two in district the court and exploded offensively for 22 points while only allowing Sealy to score three, ending the first half 29-12 and giving Wharton a commanding lead. Wharton’s defense in the third quarter was almost as unyielding as the third quarter. Wharton put up 18 points to Sealy’s eight points only furthering the gap. Sealy did step up their game in the fourth quarter and held tight point-forpoint as they did in the first quarter, 10-13, but it was not enough to come close to Wharton, ending the game 60-30 Wharton. High scorer against Wharton was Tyler Fuller with eight points followed by Tyreke McNeese with six points. Clayton Fritsch and Tajh Green each added five points, and Trey Holcomb and Jared Brantley chipped in three points each. Box scores against Bay City were 6-12, 4-8, 15-12, and 8-18. Points against Bay City went to Green with 14 points, McNeese with six points, Holcomb with five points, Brantley with four points, and Fuller with two points. On Tuesday, Jan. 26, The Tigers hosted Wharton and lost 60-30, then traveled to Bay City on Friday and lost 50-33 bringing the team to a 2-3 record in district play. Hosting Wharton on Tuesday night proved to be the toughest game of the season for the Tigers so far. Over the last two weeks, four of the teams’ starting seniors have left the team and will reportedly not be returning which has left Sealy’s varsity team in a muddled state. These changes to the roster have brought junior varsity players up to the varsity level and the end result has not been good to this point. The first quarter was ultimately low scoring, with the Tigers leading Wharton 9-7, but that was the only time that Sealy would be on top for the remainder of the game. In the second, Wharton came onto

The Tiger soccer team had an incredible win over Lamar Consolidated Tuesday, Jan. 26, of 3-0, then tied Calhoun on Friday 3-3 in preparation for district play, which is set to start on Feb. 8. Goals were made by Selvin Vasquez, Misael Dominguez, and Abel Gonzalez against Lamar Consolidated. Coach Perez named the goalkeeper Javier Noriega as the game’s MVP. “He made a few important saves for us,” Perez said. On Friday, in the second game of the week, there was high intensity from the beginning in the Calhoun matchup. Both teams were making wild kicks and efforts for a goal in the first ten minutes of play, but not one made it near the goal. Eliazer Guerrero had a near goal that was stopped short by the Calhoun goalkeeper right as it bounced off the top pole of the net. Calhoun was first to find the goal line 20 minutes into the game. They were on the attack and Sealy found it hard to defend the net. Two minutes later, Calhoun brought the ball back to the goal line for their second point almost unexpectedly. Lady Tiger losses close door to playoff hopes By MINDY BLANKEMEYER mnblankemeyer@aol.com

On Tuesday, Jan. 26, the Lady Tigers played host to Wharton and lost 71-51, and then traveled to Bay City on Friday and lost 84-43 leaving the team with a 1-6 district record and all hopes of making the playoffs gone. Roster changes to the girls’ varsity team are weighing heavy on the Lady Tigers. The only two senior players on the roster have left the team for unspecified reasons with no additions being added to the roster to fill the void, and leaving the

remaining team exhausted from overuse. Wharton came out on fire Tuesday night starting at tipoff putting up the first four points of the game. Jaymi Gordon was first on the board for the Lady Tigers with two, but they were still trailing. Gordon added a 3-pointer to come within reach of Wharton, but not close enough when they would pull just out of reach again. The two Tiger teams would tie at 13 and again at 15 until Wharton pulled ahead to win the first quarter 16-17. Wharton came out in the second with two

3-pointers right off the bat to pull ahead. McKayla Black answered with a 3-pointer of her own for the Lady Tigers. Wharton was able to keep Sealy at bay just enough to where the Lady Tigers could score, but not lead on the board. The half ends 39-32 with Wharton on top. The third quarter almost mirrored the first two on the board. The Tigers would get close, but just couldn’t pull ahead. Wharton put up 18 points to Sealy’s 15, which left the Lady Tigers down by 10 experiencing the biggest gap

they had seen so far. All steam was lost in the fourth quarter. Coach Branch only used seven of his players for the majority of the game, which took its toll on them. The Lady Tigers were only able to put up four points to Wharton’s 14, and lost 71-51. Leading scorer for the Wharton game was

Gordon with 21, as well as shooting two 3-pointers, and going 5 for 8 on free throws. Black added 11 points and went 7 for 8 on free throws, and Taylor Bartholomaus also had 11 points, followed by Jayme Kana with four points. Kayla Rice and MaKayla Scott each added two points to round out the game. Box scores for Bay

City were 8-25, 9-25, 8-22, and 18-12. Points scored against Bay City were not available as of press time. Next up for the Lady Tigers will be the final three district games. Tuesday, Feb. 2, they host El Campo, Friday, Feb. 5 they travel to Columbus, and then the ■ LADY TIGERS, page 6

On Friday, the society held a 1920s Vintage Fashion Show as men, women and children alike strutted their stuff down the runway in vintage clothing such as wedding attire, swimsuits and dapper daywear. Admission for the event was $15. The show also took a glance at present day clothing inspired by 1920s fashion as models pranced about in trendy styles maintaining that vintage air with a fresh look almost 100 years later. Kolkhorst Petroleum sells Rattlers stores to owner of Stripes Photos by Jason B. Hogan

Youngsters take over county offices Austin County Judge Tim Lapham directs audience attention to the jury box, where officials would sit during opening ceremonies for 61st annual Austin County Youth Government Day on Monday at the county courthouse. High school students from across the county were represented by Sealy, Bellville, Brazos and Faith Academy schools for a day of governance with Austin County offices. Some of those included in the day’s events were the county commissioners court, county clerk’s office and county tax assessor-collector’s office. Marcus Peña, county tax assessor and election official, presented the county’s new form of voting using polling pads, which debuted in the March Primary at county polling locations.

K o l k h o r s t Petroleum will sell 14 of its Rattlers convenience stores to affiliates of Sunoco LP in the first half of this year, according to a press release from the company. The deal also includes Kolkhorst’s wholesale motor fuel distribution business, though the company will retain and continue to operate its commercial fuel, bobtail and lubricant business with the headquarters remain-

ing in Navasota. Kolkhorst Foods, LLC, will be retained as well, which currently operates five Burger King locations. Austin County locations of Rattlers include Bellville, Brenham and Chappel Hill. Company officials were not immediately available to comment on if the stores will be rebranded. Sunoco closed a $1.8 billion deal last year to purchase the company that operated Stripes convenience

store chain in Texas and other states. Sunoco subsequently announced in February that it would lay off 161 Stripes employees in April. “Rattlers” convenience store chain first began as Jim’s Food Mart in December, 1992, in College Station. The stores were renamed and re-imaged in 2005. The 14 stores are located in six counties throughout Central Texas operating primarily with

Exxon, Shell and Valero branded fuels. The company supplies dealer accounts with branded and unbranded fuel throughout Central, South, and East Texas. Kolkhorst Petroleum was first established in 1972 as a fuel consignee for Exxon by Vivian and the late James Kolkhorst. Jim Kolkhorst, the president and CEO of Kolkhorst Petroleum, Inc., took ownership of the company in 1997.

Panthers tame Tigers, 48-26 By Mindy Blankemeyer mnblankemeyer@aol.com

In Sealy’s first game on the road this season, the St. Pius X Panthers defeated the Tigers 48-26. Coming off of a high from week one in a victory over Wharton, 28-17, the Tigers are now 1-1 for the season. The Panthers owned the opening quarter without doubt. The Tigers allowed the first Panther touchdown at 8:30 on the clock. The Panthers missed the extra point to the right taking a 6-0 lead. It only got worse from there. The Panthers scored a second touchdown with 5:12 remaining on the clock in the first, but failed on a two-point conversion that was blocked by Tiger defender Trey Holcomb. The Panthers were up a dozen. Then a third touchdown came with just under two minutes on the clock. This time the Tigers misread the Panthers two-point conversion. St. Pius X was now up 20-0. After giving up 156

passing yards to the Panthers in the first quarter alone, the Tigers began to settle in and play real Tigerball as they opened the second quarter. On the first play of the second quarter, quarterback Clayton Fritsch faked a handoff and threw a pass to Kobe Aguado who scored the Tigers first touchdown of the night. The extra point by Eliazer Guerrero was good to bring the score to 20-7, St. Pius X. The Panthers were on the Tiger 44-yard line when they changed quarterbacks. The Tigers forced a fumble, which was picked up by Tiger linebacker Jess Welch to give Sealy the opportunity to close the gap on the scoreboard. A long pass by Fritsch to the right found wideout Justin Eckhardt wide open. With 7:20 on the clock, Eckhardt turned that pass into a 39-yard touchdown for the Tigers. The extra point by Guerrero was blocked leaving the Tigers trailing St. Pius X by a touchdown.

Kobe Aguado takes down the Panther quarterback Friday night in the loss to St. Pius X. Aguado also had 11 tackles, two sacks and one special team tackle to go along with 18 yards rushing in the game. The Tigers continued their second-quarter command. With just under two minutes left on the clock, Sealy marched the ball down the field in an attempt to even up the score. The Tigers came within five yards of a

third touchdown but just couldn’t get it done when time ran out on the clock and sent the teams into the locker room for halftime with St. Pius X still holding a 20-13 lead. The second half opened with a kickoff to

the Tigers where Christian Browning drove the ball all the way back to the Panther 35-yard line behind a wall of Tiger lineman. Unfortunately, Sealy lost the ball to a fumble on the next play and the Panthers took full

advantage. St. Pius X drove the ball down the field to score their fourth touchdown of the night with 8:24 left on the clock. The extra point was good bringing the score to 27-13, St. Pius X. ■ FOOTBALL, page 6

Early turnovers prove costly for Tigers By SCOTT JOINER esjoiner@yahoo.com

Three interceptions and a pair of long Bellville touchdown runs in the first half proved insurmountable for the Sealy Tigers in a 35-7 loss to the Bellville Brahmas on Friday at TJ Mills Stadium. “Early on we had our opportunities to score 21 points,” Sealy coach Jason Holcomb said. “Turnovers changed the whole football game. Once you fall behind to a slot-T team — that’s a good team — you’re going to be in trouble.” Bellville (2-2) scored on its second possession when Mac Briscoe broke free for a 71-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 Brahmas lead with 7:14 remaining in the first quarter. Sealy (1-3) responded with a 61-yard drive with three completions setting the Tigers up

at the Bellville 9-yard line. Tigers quarterback Garrett Zaskoda started the drive with a 29-yard completion to Christian Browning, followed by a 12-yard pass to Justin Eckhardt and a 20-yard toss to Tyrek McNeese. But, Zaskoda’s pass from first-and-goal was intercepted by the Bellville defense. “They have a good defense,” Holcomb said. “They have their All-state middle linebacker back. We sat our starting running back out to get his ankle healed up for this week when we start district play. We threw the ball around pretty decent, we just had those turnovers early that kept us from scoring. If you score, you get momentum and what a slot-T team does on offense changes a little bit.”

On the next Sealy drive, Zaskoda scrambled 18 yards and a 15-yard penalty for a late hit put the Tigers at the Bellville 35. On fourth-and-8, Brahmas defensive back Marcus Ward picked off a Sealy pass and returned it to the Tigers 24. Sealy’s defense came up with a turnover of its own two plays later when defensive back Kobe Aguado hit Bellville’s tight end, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Christian Browning

and returned to the Brahmas’ 13. “(Aguado) made some good tackles,” Holcomb said. “Eckhardt made some good tackles and Jess Welch had a good game defensively.” Zaskoda tied the game up on the first play of the ensuing drive. He found Jared Kainer in the slot for a 13-yard touchdown pass. Kicker Eliazer Guerrero added the extra point to tie the game at 7-7. Briscoe put the Brahmas back in front

on a four-play drive. He ran for a 24-yard gain, followed by a 14-yard carry and capped it off with a 37-yard touchdown, which was highlighted by a spin move at the

line of scrimmage to escape two Sealy defenders, giving Bellville a 14-7 lead. “We missed two or three tackles in the ■ TIGERS, page 6

Sealy Tiger Clayton Fritsch holds off one air-bound El Campo defender and hauls in a 29-yard pass from Garrett Zaskoda while dodging two other defenders on his way to the end zone, and Sealy’s first score of a Friday night loss.

Tigers come up short against No. 5 El Campo By SCOTT JOINER esjoiner@yahoo.com

With two weeks to prepare due to a bye, the Sealy Tigers gave Class 4A’s No. 5 ranked El Campo a challenge in the first half, but the difference in size and speed showed in the second half as the Tigers came up short losing 31-7. “I thought we played really well in the first half,” Sealy coach Jason Holcomb said. “We didn’t start the second half the way I wanted to. Football is a huge game of momentum, and when they got it, they ran with it. We didn’t tackle well a couple times and it just kind of got away from us.” The Ricebirds were known primarily as a running team coming into the game, but scored on a pair of long touchdown passes in the second half that decided the game. “Those were two good balls; they haven’t really done that,” Holcomb said. “They’ve run them, but they just connected.” El Campo struck quickly on its first drive. Nery Enriquez

started the drive with a 49-yard carry to put the Ricebirds at the Sealy 5. A one-yard run by Enriquez moved them closer and on the third play of the drive Enriquez scored on a four-yard run. The Ricebirds missed the point after attempt to lead 6-0. The Tigers managed two first downs on the ensuing drive but were forced to punt before crossing the 50-yard line. El Campo’s second drive was highlighted by a first down pass from Brock Brandl to Wesley Arrambide for 16 yards. The Sealy defense held its ground forcing an incompletion on third-and-5 play resulting in a Ricebirds punt. Sealy started its third possession of the game from its own 10. Garret Zaskoda picked up a first down on an 11-yard completion to Brennan Brandes. The Tigers completed two more passes with Zaskoda finding Jared Kainer for eight yards and Justin Eckhardt on a 28-yard completion for a first down, putting the Tigers at the El Campo

38. Zaskoda was sacked on fourth down to end Sealy’s first scoring chance of the game. El Campo went three-and-out on its first possession of the second quarter. On third down, Darius Houston and Tyrek McNeese brought down Brandl to stop the Ricebirds at their 38. The Ricebirds added to their lead on the final possession of the half. With 7:19 remaining, El Campo drove 82 yards on 15 plays with a 29-yard field goal capping off the drive for a 9-0 Ricebirds lead at halftime. El Campo scored on three of its first four possessions in the second half. The first came just three plays into the opening drive when Enriquez broke two tackles and ran 45 yards for a touchdown. Brandl ran in a twopoint conversion for a 17-0 El Campo lead. With 2:10 remaining in the third quarter, El Campo scored on a 56-yard touchdown pass from Brandl to Antoine Greer for a

Early in the fourth quarter, El Campo struck again on a 36-yard touchdown pass from Brandl to Greer to give the Ricebirds a 31-0 lead. McNeese gave the Tigers hope on the ensuing kickoff with a return to the El Campo 41. Nine plays later on third-and-18, Zaskoda hit Clayton Fritsch on a 29-yard pass, and Fritsch beat two El Campo defenders for a touchdown to cut the lead to 31-7. Sealy’s defense and

special teams kept fighting and came up with a big play late in the game. With just under two minutes to play, Sealy’s Rory Strong blocked an El Campo punt to set the Tigers up at the Ricebirds 26, but couldn’t score before time expired. “That’s a sign of great character on his part,” Holcomb said. “The kids played hard. There are a lot of distractions this week with fair week.” Sealy has another tough test on Friday

with a trip to face Class 4A’s No. 4 ranked Stafford. “There is a reason they’re ranked No. 4 in the state – they have eight division one athletes in the senior class,” Holcomb said. “They’re pretty good. We’ve just got to prepare for what they do. They put the ball in the air. They have some outstanding receivers and they’re big on defense. We’ve got to come up with a game plan to slow them down a little bit.”
