Lady Tigers eye playoffs Sealy girls roll with wins against Royal, Wharton. By CREIGHTON HOLUB sports@sealynews.com

Coming off of a pair of huge wins last week, the Lady Tiger basketball team is right on pace for a playoff berth from District 25-3A. The Lady Tigers have tomorrow night off, but return to the basketball court Tuesday night as they host the Columbus Lady Cardinals. Sealy is set to visit El Campo next Friday before the regular season finale at home against rival Bellville on Feb. 4. The Lady Tigers started last week with a solid 46-31 victory against Brookshire Royal and finished off Wharton, 59-42. “I thought our posts did a great job of getting the ball inside and doing something with it tonight,” said Jerry Brantly, the Lady Tigers’ head basketball coach. “They hustled, the whole team worked hard. “That’s what you like to have as a team – you like for somebody to carry the team – and if it’s somebody different every night, that means you have a well-balanced team,” the head coach added. Sealy fans also got a peek at the near future as Brantly started pulling up players from his sub-varsity teams to get some seasoning before the playoffs arrive in a couple of weeks. “We got to play some younger kids and they came in and did well,” he added. “I think we’re just now starting to play our best basketball. Softball team in preseason top 10 By CREIGHTON HOLUB sports@sealynews.com

It’s not a stretch of the imagination to see the Lady Tiger softball team advancing deep into the 3A playoffs again this spring. The Lady Tigers graduated only a few key players and the surrounding talent pool should provide solid replacement players to help fill the gaps left by last year’s seniors. Mix in the solid pitching from Mariah Holub and Shannon Brown with the strong bats the Lady Tigers have returning, and you have a recipe for success. However, the Lady Tigers will have to get past No. 3 La Grange – the team that ended Sealy’s historic regional title finalist season – if they hope to advance to Austin in 2014. The Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA), the best location for polls in the state’s girls sports, has pegged Sealy at the No. 8 position. However, the TGCA is only predicting which teams to watch as of Monday. Actual polls are expected to be available next week.

Tigers clench soccer playoffs By CREIGHTON HOLUB sports@sealynews.com

The Tigers will finally see the playoffs for the first time this school year. According to the head boys soccer coach, Juan Perez, the Tigers clenched with a combination of their victories and help from other teams that has kept them in the race for the district championship. However, you can bet on the Tigers having one of the top four finishes in District 36-4A. The Tigers started last week with a 3-2 victory in Navasota last Tuesday. But the Tigers’ luck ran out as College Station managed to get the lone, winning goal in last Friday’s game at Tiger Stadium, 1-0. Despite the one-point loss, Perez was very happy with his team. “I think this was the best game we’ve played the whole season, even though we lost,” Perez added. “Everything came together, but we had one mistake and they scored.” Against College Station, goalkeeper Tyler Nunn made five saves and against Navasota, he made four saves. Battling Navasota, Javier Arriaga scored two goals and Andres Guerrero scored one. Emilio Guerrero and Eric Hernandez each contributed one assist. The JV Tigers defeated College Station, 3-2, and tied Navasota, 1-1. The Tigers took

Tigers are 4-4-2 heading into district play Wharton up next for baseball team By CREIGHTON HOLUB sports@sealynews.com

The District 25-3A baseball race began earlier this week as the Tigers hosted neighboring Brookshire Royal and continues as Sealy visits Wharton tomorrow night. However, the Tigers finished the pre-district season with a solid, but imperfect, showing against Aldine. Sealy took the game, 14-4, in just five innings. The same Sealy team slipped to La Grange with a 2-1 decision earlier last week. With last week’s decisions split in half, the Tigers are now at 4-4-2 on the season. The two ties came from tournament play earlier this season. While the Tigers managed to earn a 10-run rule victory over the 5A team, head coach Brett Montier believed The Sealy News/CREIGHTON HOLUB his team could have finished the job sooner. Kaleb Manak connects with an Aldine pitch during the final pre-district game last Friday night. “We had too many The Tigers are set to visit Wharton tomorrow night.

physical mistakes tonight and too many errors running the bases,” Montier said. “In order for us to make a run at this in the playoffs, we’re going to have to be physically and mentally in the game. I understand some physical errors every once in a while, but we’re a lot better baseball team than what we showed tonight.” The competition for playoff berths in District 25-3A should be fierce, just as it has been for the past few seasons. “I told (my players) that they’re a good baseball team, because they’re able to make these mistakes that I don’t want to happen and they still 10-run rule somebody,”

Montier added. “Realistically, it should have been over earlier.” The pre-district finale was a good spot to address any issues in the bullpen. The Tiger pitchers faced solid batters and were forced to earn their strikes. “Holten (Einkauf) fought through some adversity early on with his pitching and he struggled with the strike zone,” Montier said. “Teague came in and really helped us out, but he had some moments where he struggled a little bit.” The Tigers are set to visit Wharton tomorrow and to host Needville on Tuesday. JV games are scheduled for the first pitch at 5 p.m. and the varsity should follow at 7:30 p.m.

Lady Tigers trounce district foes El Campo, Bellville, Royal fall to Sealy girls in softball action By CREIGHTON HOLUB sports@sealynews.com

The Lady Tiger softball team is off to a solid start in District 25-3A with three straight victories, including a key win over El Campo last week. Sealy defeated El Campo, 8-7, before trouncing nearby rivals Bellville and Brookshire Royal, 10-0 and 15-0, respectively. “We did a good job staying focused with Bellville and did a pretty good job against Brookshire,” said Casey Anderson, the Lady Tigers’ head coach. However, the Lady Tigers had to adjust their batting strategies from speedy pitching to lower velocity pitching. “(Royal’s) pitching was slower than slow, and we did a good job adjusting to it. It’s a matter of staying focused and not letting those teams sneak up and take a victory from us.” Normally, games are held Tuesdays and Fridays, but with spring break hitting most school districts this week, the Lady Falcons agreed to play their game Monday morning in order to maximize the players’ time with their families. “We played real well,” Anderson added. “We actually hit the ball real well off their pitching and our defense was

It was a good win for us.” The next couple of weeks will help define what kind of season the Lady Tigers will have in 2014 and whether they can add another district crown to the trophy case. “We’re looking pretty good right now,” Anderson added. “We played real well against El Campo and beat them, that was a big win – coming (into the district season), I think they were the team to beat. You’ve got (El Campo), Needville, Columbus and us all vying for that top spot. Now we’ve got Wharton and Needville, if we beat them, we’ll be sitting real good. Hopefully we’ll be sitting 5-0 after next Tuesday.” Individual Statistics:
