Austin County Fair president's welcome I can’t believe three years has come already! This is my last year as Fair President and I can say it has been a great learning experience. There is so much that goes on behind the scenes that not everybody knows about. It takes a lot of work and effort to do what the Fair is all about! We have a great Board of Directors and lots of great volunteers that make it possible. I would like to thank them all
and also thank all the sponsors, buyers and parents. All this together is what it is all about – taking care of the Youth of Austin County. Volunteers dedicate time to make annual fair a success Putting on an event the size of the Austin County Fair and Rodeo requires the talents of many volunteers. They are the backbone to the event’s success. Thanks to them, the fair is still going strong after 87 years. Folks from all over the county gather together during the months of September and October to clean the fairgrounds, repair what needs to be fixed, spruce up the livestock barn and help with anything else necessary to the internal workings of the fair. Young and old alike work side by side and put in many hours of work so the fair association can present the county with quality entertainment. Everywhere you look, there are volunteers. By the time you enter the parking gate, go through the ticket gate, grab a soda and burger and catch a glimpse of livestock and home economic exhibits, you have come in contact with many volunteers. Everyone focuses on one common goal: The betterment of the youth of Austin County. It’s impossible for any one group to do it all; therefore, to all the hardworking volunteers who devote time and effort to the fair, the board of directors would like to extend a sincere thank you. Let them know that the Austin County Fair and Rodeo would not be what it is today without their help.

way of scholarships for their educational and occupational goals. Freddie is a charter member of the Wallis Lions Club and the First Wallis Baptist Church. He is presently serving as vice president of the Brazos FFA Alumni. He also assists with the annual Antique Tractor Show at the Wallis Fire Department Frolic in June and the Alumni Tractor Technician Competition in January at Brazos High School. The Austin County Fair has been a very important part of his life. Freddie and his wife, Wanda, have two sons, a daughter and eight grandchildren. Each child will be given a participation number, which must be worn during the contest. Stick horses will be provided. Three age divisions: 3-4 years, 5-6 years and 7-8 years – limited to 20 contestants per age division
The three timed events are barrel racing, pole bending and goat ribbon racing. The contestant will be required to ride the stick horse through the patterns in order to be scored. Failure to do so will receive a no time. Fastest time overall in each age division wins. The Austin County fair has added a new play area or minipark for children ages 5 and under called Mommy & Me. The play area, located behind the commercial exhibit buildings, is designed for the smaller fairgoers to create
their own memories at the fair by bouncing in the dinosaur jumper, swinging, cruising’ around the track on a tricycle or pedal tractor, or digging for prizes in the sandbox. Children can enter the fenced Mommy & Me area

Shuttle buses will be provided at the Austin County Fair and Rodeo, picking up and delivering passengers from the Austin County Courthouse square in
Bellville to the fairgrounds. The shuttle will run every 15 minutes. Runs include: Thursday, Oct. 10 buses

17 queen candidates Austin County Fair competing for title of little Miss contestants Miss Austin County Fair One of the most popular events at the fair is the Austin County Fair Queens Contest. Seventeen beautiful young ladies will compete to be crowned the 2014 Austin County Fair Queen. The contest will be held in the Austin County Fair Convention & Expo Center at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9. Each candidate for fair queen is required to sell at least $1,500 in advance gate tickets in order to qualify. The girl who sells the most advance season passes will be named 2014 Austin County Fair Ticket Queen and receive her title from last year’s winner, Courtney Klein. Gloria Whitmore, 2013 Austin County Fair Queen, will be on hand to crown this year’s Austin County Fair Queen. The fair queen and ticket queen will receive a $2,000 scholarship each upon entering college or a career school. The fair queen runner-up and ticket queen runner-up will receive a scholarship of $1,500 each. The 2014 fair queen and ticket queen will also receive a special gift from the Austin County Fair Association. All girls who sell more than $2,500 worth of tickets will receive a $50 gift. Judging will begin on Thursday afternoon with personal interviews with the judges, prior to the girls’

Fair to raise funds for ACS with Tough Enough to Wear Pink This year makes eight years in row the Austin County Fair Association has joined forces with the American Cancer Society using the program, Tough Enough to Wear Pink, to raise money for cancer research, education and patient services. To date, that program has raised over $5 million nationally, all dedicated to the elimination of breast cancer. On Friday, Oct. 10, the fair association will donate to the Austin County Unit of the American Cancer Society $1 for every pink shirt worn into the fairgrounds between the hours of 5 and 8 p.m. Volunteers of the unit will be on hand to distribute ribbons to those wearing pink shirts. Cowboys across the country and in Canada are wearing pink these days in an effort to combat breast cancer. Other sports have recently jumped
on the pink wagon, and you often see baseball and football players wearing pink shoes, socks, helmets, even chin guards. “This is one of our most important projects,” said Roy Mewis, former fair president and current parade luncheon chair and stage manager. “And, we look forward every year to seeing more people wear pink.” No, pink isn’t normally a color that one would associate with rough and tough rodeo contestants, but that thinking changed when Terry Wheatley asked cowboys to join her in her fight to end the dreaded disease. In 2004, Wheatley was looking forward to attending the Wrangler National Rodeo Finals in Las Vegas since her son, Wade, was a contestant in team roping. Her husband, Jim, had been a six-time qualifier in team roping, as well. But, she had recently undergone breast cancer surgery, and
that was on her mind. Wheatley had lost her grandmother to breast cancer, and her mother had a double mastectomy before the age of 40. In addition, her daughter, Katie, had been through two surgical biopsies before she was 20. What’s more, Karl Stressman, director of Wrangler special events at the time, and Wheatley’s business associate, was also dealing with the fact that his wife had suffered with the disease. Wheatley felt compelled to do something, so she enlisted the help of Wrangler and the Profession Rodeo Cowboys Association. The word was spread, and on the night of the finals, the rodeo arena was a sea of pink. Since the inception of Wheatley’s idea, hundreds of rodeos and western events have supported some form of Tough Enough to Wear Pink. Wrangler is now the campaign’s title sponsor.

Fair tickets on sale Tickets for the 87th Annual Austin County Fair, including the Passports to Fun, are on sale at the Austin County Fair Office or from any queen contestant. Season passes are $35 at the gate for the entire run, Oct. 8-12. There will be only 850 Passport To Fun coupon books sold this year. Passport To Fun coupon books allow entry onto the fairgrounds and unlimited carnival rides for the entire five days of the fair for only $95. Once the coupon books are gone, no more will be sold. When purchasing Passports to Fun, make sure to sign the coupon book as soon as possible. Passports to Fun will not be accepted at the gate without a signature from the person using the passport. Also, Passports to Fun will not be replaced if lost, stolen or misplaced. Day tickets, senior citizen and children’s (6-11) tickets will only be sold at the gate. Day tickets are $15. Children 6-11 and senior citizens are $6. This year there will be no admission charge
on Sunday. Wednesday special The Austin County Fair Association is offering $5 off the day ticket, which will be valid only on Wednesday, Oct. 8. To receive the discounted ticket price, present a $5 coupon, which will be available in the fair brochure located at many businesses in the community. Present the coupon at the gate when purchasing a day ticket. Note that $5 coupons may only be used in conjunction with day tickets. This year Talley Amusements will be offering a wristband for $35. Thursday special Talley Amusements is offering $5 off a wristband on Thursday, Oct. 9. To receive the discount, present the $5 coupon at the ticket booth located in the carnival. Sunday special Bring two canned goods to the carnival ticket booth on Sunday, Oct. 12, and receive $5 off the price of a wristband. PRCA rodeo action Crowds will flock into Koerth Arena on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights to see the fair’s PRCA rodeos that feature world champions against local competitors. The PRCA Rodeos will begin at 7:30 p.m. each day. “The rodeos we have planned for this year will be bigger and better than ever, and we will have some of the world’s best cowboys and cowgirls right here,” said chairman Ricky Huff. “And do we ever have a surprise in store for the crowd. Gizmo will be on hand to keep the crowd laughing.” Bronc riding, barrel racing, bull riding – there’s nothing like a rodeo to create excitement, and the Austin County Fair and Rodeo is no exception. Fairgoers will be treated to a genuine, rough and tough, western rodeo, and the best part is admission to the rodeo performances is included in the fair admission. Eight events – bronc riding, bare-
back riding, barrel racing, steer dogging, team roping, calf roping, ladies’ breakaway and bull riding – will spotlight cowboys and cowgirls competing to win cash prizes of about $25,000 plus added money for each event. Traditionally, the Austin County Fair and Rodeo has attracted contestants from all over the nation, so it’s not unusual to see world champion and circuit cowboys perform. Austin County is rich in rodeo enthusiasm and boasts several PRCA qualifiers. The Bellville Heritage Cowgirls will perform on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Mo Betta Rodeo Company will be the producer of the rodeo, and his organization provides all the stock for the show, some of which appeared at national finals. All year long the rodeo committee works to assure the production of a stupendous rodeo for fans, as their jobs also include maintaining the arena, bucking chutes and pens.

Fair awards scholarships to 14 local students The Austin County Fair Association is pleased to announce the 2014 recipients of the Austin County Fair Memorial Scholarships. The Austin County Fair has been awarding scholarships in memory of deceased directors and deceased director’s spouses since 1992. The scholarship program originally awarded six scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each. Over the years, the Fair Association has been increasing scholarships. This year scholarships totaling $42,000 were awarded to 14 deserving Austin County students. The Fair Association takes great pride in giving back to these students from our community for their hard work and dedication that they have shown throughout the years. The Austin County Fair Memorial Scholarships are funded from money raised throughout the year through various activities. With the support of the community and dedicated board members, the Fair Association has
awarded $59,500 in scholarships this year including the queen scholarships. The Austin County Fair Association works hard all year committing many countless volunteer hours working toward the goal of continuing to raise scholarships. By 2015, the Fair Association will have awarded over $500,000 in scholarships since the program started and will continue to strive towards dedicating their efforts to the youths of Austin County. This will be the fifth year that the Fair Association will award the Harold Luhn Agricultural Memorial Scholarship from the Chuck and Rita Scianna Endowment Fund. The Harold Luhn Agricultural Memorial Scholarship is awarded each year to one student who will pursue a career in agriculture. This is the third year the Austin County Fair Association will award two C.W. and Lillie Brandes Agricultural Memorial Scholarships.
This year the scholarships have been increased to $3,500 each to well deserving qualified recipients who pursue a course of sturdy in the field of agriculture. The C.W. and Lillie Brandes Agricultural Memorial Scholarship is endowed by their granddaughter Tracey and her husband Jim O’Neil. The Austin County Fair Association would like to extend their congratulations to all the graduating seniors in Austin County and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors! Youth auction to showcase Livestock judging set for 300 for sale, set for Oct. 10 Wednesday, Thursday
The Austin County Fair and Rodeo Youth Auction Sale is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 10 at 12:30 p.m. Since the first fair in 1927, its focus has been on the youth of the county. Out of more than 352 exhibit entries at the fair, only 300 will make the sale after the animal has been judged eligible for sale in its class. Since all animals shown at the fair are of top quality, those that go to the sale ring are outstanding. Buyers from all over the area will have the chance to bid on steers, commercial heifers, horses, hogs, lambs, goats, rabbits, turkeys and broilers. In case an exhibitor has more than one animal in the show, only one may be selected to be sold at the youth auction sale. All entries not sold in the sale are eligible for sale by Aresale. Participation in the youth auction sale is limited to 4-H’ers and FFA members who reside in or are enrolled in a school in Austin County. Therefore, money spent at the sale goes directly to the youth of Austin County. Since 1970, the youth auction has generated over $12 million. Last year, sales topped over $1 million with add-ons. Everyone is invited to attend the youth auction, which will be held in the Austin County Fair Convention and Expo Center, and support the youth of the county
The Austin County Fair and Rodeo features numerous events for FFA and 4-H members, including livestock projects where students can raise commercial heifers, horses, breeding rabbits, market barrows, market broilers, market lambs, market goats, market rabbits, market steers and market turkeys. Students must work to raise their livestock for many months prior to the fair. They put a lot of time and sweat into their projects. Come out and see all their hard work pay off as grand champion and reserve champions are named. The livestock judging schedule is:

Star-studded concert line-up Country music legends Ronnie Milsap and Johnny Lee are joined by Daryle Singletary, Aaron Watson, the Turnpike Troubadours and other performers during the 87th Annual Austin County Fair & PRCA Rodeo. The fair will be held Oct. 8-12 at the Austin County Fairgrounds. The excitement begins on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. with the sounds of Route 4 Band. Country Showdown winners, 100 Miles Gone, will open on Thursday, Oct. 9, at 6:45 p.m. followed by JB and the Moonshine Band at 7:15 p.m. JB and the Moonshine Band are an up-and-coming band with hits such as “The Only Drug,” “Perfect Girl,” and “Yes”. The Honky Tonk Kid himself closes out Thursday night at 10:15 p.m. Aaron Watson is known for his songs “July In Cheyenne,” “Raise Your Bottle,” “Barbed Wire Halo,” “Fast Cars Slow Kisses,” “3rd Gear and 17,” “Shut Up and Dance,” and “Off The Record.” Daryle Singletary kicks off Friday evening, Oct. 10, at 8:15 p.m. Singletary is from rural Georgia and earned his fame for country authenticity with such unforgettable hits as “I Let Her Lie,” “Too Much Fun”, “Amen Kind of Love” and “The Note.” Ronnie Milsap takes the stage at 10:15 p.m. Milsap was born in Robbinsville, N.C., at the edge of the Smoky Mountians.
