Family caregivers can find support Kingston Road Creative at The Caregiver Show on May 14 Walk set for Saturday Simply put – family caregivers need support. That’s the reason for the upcoming Caregiver Show, a free event May 14 at the Direct Energy Centre. Produced by Metroland Media Toronto and conceived in partnership with Downsizing Divas, the show will provide a relaxing day for caregivers, giving them access to caregiving

resources, providing the opportunity to meet other caregivers in similar circumstances, and to receive a little pampering. Some eight million Canadians are family caregivers. A caregiver is anyone who provides care to a loved one or friend with acute, chronic problem or aging issues. A caregiver can be a wife, husband, sister, brother, daughter, son, uncle,

aunt, mother, father, grandchild or caring neighbour. “We do hope you take advantage and attend this show,” said Marg Middleton, general manager of Metroland Media Toronto. “We want to provide good information and show people how to access helpful resources. Just as important, the day offers an opportunity >>>SHOW, page 26

Local players score Raptors Game 7 tickets Draw winners attend game at ACC thanks to Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart program NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com The luck of the draw sent 15 members of a Scarborough Basketball Association (SBA) Saturday house league program to last Sunday’s Raptors game. The seventh and final game of the first round playoff series (which the Raptors ended up losing 104-103 to the Brooklyn Nets), it was no doubt the hottest sports ticket in Toronto this season. Not only did the Air Canada Centre obviously sell out, the adjacent ‘Jurassic Park’, otherwise known as Maple Leaf Square, was filled to capacity with 10,000 fans two hours prior to tip off to the May 5 afternoon game. No problem, though, for these Scarborough basketball players who were whisked to the stadium in a yellow school bus – and even had an interview with TSN – before heading into the packed building. The tickets were offered up to the SBA by Canadian Tire’s youth sports charity Jumpstart which is already involved in sponsoring membership in the league.

“It was really thrilling, it was awesome for the kids,” said an appreciative Kareem Granger, head convenor of the house league program. The SBA and Jumpstart decided a good way to dish out the tickets was a draw – but with a twist. The draw was open to all players in the Saturday house league program between the ages of 9 and 14. But they were told that the prize was watching Sunday’s big game on a big screen, preceded by a pick-up game. The parents of the winning draw members were obviously let in on the ruse. Sunday’s pick-up game came about as promised, held at McGregor Park Community Centre. “Being kids and being young basketball players they were excited just to start a little pick-up game on the basketball court,” he said. The only thing out of the ordinary, he said, was all the assembled media and guests. “It was a little weird because there was, like, camera guys on the court as they were playing.” And that’s when the kids were told the truth: the only big screen they would be looking at that afternoon

Scarborough Basketball Association head convener Kareem Granger, centre right, is interviewed by TSN personality Cabral ‘Cabbie’ Richards on Sunday in Maple Leaf Square just before escorting a group of 15 Scaborough Basketball Association house league youth players into the Air Canada Centre for Game 7 of the Toronto Raptors/Brooklyn Nets first round playoff series.

was actually inside the Air Canada Centre. “Getting tickets to Game 7 is one thing, the excitement of hanging out with each other is another thing. But then the whole red carpet treatment

that we got when we got down there was a total other thing – the T.V. time. A lot of them are still getting text messages and hearing from their friends who saw them because we did the interview ... I guess that

was live, right before the game,” said Granger. In the end, there was only one way it could have turned out better (referring, of course, to a Raptors win).

Integrity Commissioner rules mayor guilty of discreditable conduct Automated message to Scarborough East voters critical of Councillor Ainslie’s subway vote MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com He’s on leave and out of the country for substance abuse treatment, but more public humiliation may be waiting for Mayor Rob Ford when he returns. Toronto Integrity Commissioner Janet Leiper has found Ford is guilty of discreditable conduct for his “robocalls” to constituents of Scarborough East Councillor Paul Ainslie last fall, and said Ford should publicly apologize. In a report last week, Leiper con-

cluded the embattled mayor broke a code of conduct when he sent an automated message to ward residents after council voted to support a Bloor-Danforth subway extension into Scarborough rather than a lightrail transit line it had previously approved. The calls, paid for by the mayor himself, thanked Scarboruogh councillors who “supported their residents” by voting for the subway but added it was “extremely, extremely unfortunate that your Councillor Paul Ainslie was the only Scarborough councillor who did not

listen to his constituents and voted against the Scarborough subway.” Leiper concluded Ainslie had involved residents in the subway versus LRT debate through public meetings and newsletters in his ward - as Ford could have found out - so to say Ainslie “did not listen” was unfair. his ward The call’s description of Ainslie’s vote, and the fact the calls only went to residents of his ward, “implies that the primary reason for the call was

to unfairly taint Councillor Ainslie’s reputation with his constituents,” the integrity commissioner said. “This is not city business.” The report recommends council approve a motion at a meeting this week to make Ford apologize to Ainslie in writing and on the floor of council. Leiper later added the matter should be defered until the mayor’s leave is over. “I feel vindicated,” Ainslie said on Monday. “We have rules that we’re expected to follow, both with the public and each other.” The councillor said he tries to

consult constituents as much as we can on major issues and found the charge he doesn’t listen to them “very insulting.” The mayor took a leave of absence on the day the report was issued. Ainslie said he hasn’t received a response from Ford or from the mayor’s office, which is controlled currently by Norm Kelly, the acting mayor. Ford previously apologized for breaking the code of conduct in 2009 with comments in which he accused another councillor of being in a conflict of interest.

Give caregivers our support I

t takes a good heart to dedicate oneself to caregiving – be it for an aging parent, a friend or family member with acute or chronic health problems. It takes patience, self-sacrifice and a lot of love. But it also requires support and respite for the caregiver themselves, to be able to learn from experts, to lean on others in similar circumstances and to have a chance to take time to relax and refresh. That’s what’s on offer at The Caregiver Show, coming up May 14 at the Direct Energy Centre. It’s a free event produced by Metroland Media Toronto and conceived in partnership with Downsizing Divas. It’s tailored to people who care for others – and with as many as eight million family caregivers in Canada, we’re sure there are plenty of you among our readership who could use the support. We invite you to join us for the day. If you’re taking care of another person, especially if you haven’t had any previous training or support, it can be our view challenging and isolating – when it comes to Hope to see you particularly navigating opportunities for at Wednesday’s government support or discovering local resources. Caregiver Show You’re not alone. Allow us to get you the help you need. The Caregiver Show will give you a chance to learn about those resources and network with people who are in similar circumstances. Form some new relationships, broaden your education and take some time out for a little pampering. Get first-hand advice from one of our prominent guest speakers: Teepa Snow, an occupational therapist currently working as a dementia care and dementia education specialist; Dr. Amy D’Aprix, co-founder of Essential Conversations Project, Inc., an organization dedicated to assisting families in having the key planning/decision-making discussions; Shirlee Sharkey, president and chief executive officer of Saint Elizabeth Health Care; and Dipti Purbhoo, senior director, client services with Toronto Central CCAC. You’ll also have a chance to explore products and see demonstrations from our participating organizations. And of course, don’t miss the Rest and Relaxation Zone to replenish your energy levels and learn ways to take care of yourself while you care for another. The show runs from 11 a.m to 7 p.m. on May 14. For more information or to register for the free event, visit www.caregivershow.ca We hope to see you there!

A simple gift idea for Mother’s Day

Co-ordinate social agencies

The best presents involve presence This is a little ditty about one grandmother reminiscing about Mother’s Days past and upcoming. My Favourite Mother’s Day Gift Of All I really liked the rose bouquet Can’t say enough about the Chardonnay And those yoga classes were something else I never would of thought of that myself The cherry bubble bath was sweet The Mamma Mia tickets were a treat And that necklace blew my mind I wear it pretty much all the time I love the Persian rug And that Davy Keon mug But my favorite Mother’s

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY Day gift of all Is when you give me a hug The portrait goes well above the fireplace Never had a quilt with so much lace And that rocking chair is the best It’s my favorite place to rest The chandelier really makes the den I play the James Taylor CD again and again And those fudge brownies that you bought My stomach and thighs thank you a lot I love the Persian rug And that Davy Keon mug But my favorite Mother’s Day gift of all Is when you give me a hug

Sometimes it gets pretty rough I miss you and the kids so much Since you all moved out of town It’s not as much fun with you not around So this year put away that credit card And please don’t rack your brain so hard Your open arms are quite enough for me They’re all I really need Oh, I’ll always love that Persian rug And that Davy Keon mug But my favorite Mother’s Day gift of all Is when you give me a hug The very best Mother’s Day gift of all Is when you give me a hug Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. To the editor: It has been reported that a social agency in Toronto called For Youth Initiative (FYI) has received a half million dollars from the federal government’s Department of Justice. Minister Peter Mackay visited this agency and made this announcement. I have no problem with any social agency in receiving funding that comes from our hard earned tax dollars, but I must insist there be some kind of accountability as to how these funds are spent. Toronto has many social agencies operating here that are receiving funding. My concern is that these agencies don’t co-ordinate with each other and sometimes these agencies offer the same programs and services. By co-ordinating, they would be able to offer different and unique programs. Moe Irshad

Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly’s mayoral role deserves praise at this time

H

e won’t return your phone call personally. He doesn’t worry about his office budget. And he shows up early. Sometimes, Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly shows up very early. On Monday, he and Toronto Centre-Rosedale Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam hosted a 9 a.m. news conference, to do something else that Mayor Rob Ford would never do: invite 200 LGBT couples to get married, for free, at Toronto’s Casa Loma. de-facto mayor Now that Mayor Ford has left city hall to look after his personal problems, Kelly is the de-facto mayor. The leave of absence funnels to Kelly the few powers left to Ford after council voted to isolate him in November. Kelly represents Toronto at official functions, acts as the head of the government in emergency and otherwise. And he continues in his role of attempting to elevate the discussion at city hall, and restore dignity to the institution – a role in which Kelly has excelled. I take the time to point

david nickle the city this out, because he really deserves the shout-out. This past 12 months have seen the city dragged through the mud – from the moment that crack video started making the rounds, or maybe a short while before, when gossip about Mayor Ford’s substance troubles found their way from back-rooms to front pages. role Kelly stepped into the role of deputy mayor in the midst of it, taking over from Doug Holyday after he made his way to Queen’s Park. Kelly did so gamely – knowing there was trouble with the mayor, and hoping to provide quiet counsel to the mayor and his brother, Councillor Doug Ford, as the office unravelled. thankless job A thankless job, but Kelly had the good grace to appear grateful for it. And when council put him in the sort-of top job, he managed to retain some grace even as he was

clearly delighted to oblige. He’s spent the past five months taking council’s pulse, nudging things along on issues he cares about, but otherwise taking a que-serasera approach to matters of municipal policy. You would never run a campaign promising to be a mayor like Kelly. But it is actually a good lesson for future mayors, as they think about how to manage this city. Norm Kelly’s geniality has led to a pretty productive council. It passed a decent budget, made a tough call on the future of the Billy Bishop Airport, and generally conducted its business as well as one might hope. The next mayor might find him/herself needing some of Kelly’s low-key mojo. Given the city’s financial constraints, it will be difficult to make a mark with more than one or two big, city-building projects and still manage the books. The virtues of modesty, inclusiveness and compromise might be the main of what our future leaders require.

ONTARIO VOTES

Budget breakfast becomes campaign launch for local MPPs MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com It was their budget at breakfast, but by lunch, it was pretty much an election platform. Five local Liberal MPPs rose to defend the latest Liberal plan for Ontario during a morning meal Friday at the Scarboro Golf and Country Club. At one point in the early morning event, Brad Duguid

was asked whether or not New Democrat Leader Andrea Horwath and her caucus would approve the budget, those votes being required to keep the Liberal minority government from falling. “If they don’t, this is the kind of budget that we’d be very pleased to go to the polls on,” said the Scarborough Centre MPP. This provincial budget is larded with measures Duguid

said a “conscientious” New Democrat should want to support, “fostering a fair society,” in the words of Pickering-Scarborough East MPP Tracy MacCharles, while running “the leanest government” in Canada. In a stark contrast, charged Duguid, the Opposition Progressive Conservatives “want a full austerity package” which could undercut Ontario’s fragile recovery,

and their “right-to-work” agenda would bring conflict with labour unions.New Democrats want to launch “a bit of an attack on corporate Ontario,” Duguid said, adding this not a time for “going heavy on business taxes.” Horwath made her intentions clear later in the morning, tweeting the NDP “cannot support a budget that is irresponsible and a government that is unaccountable.”

But before that, Duguid, MacCharles, Bas Balkissoon, Mitzie Hunter and Soo Wong each spoke on budget points now certain to be part of a spring election campaign, and took questions. Another Scarborough MPP, Lorenzo Berardinetti, was absent. Brad Weber, a wealth advisor for BMO Harris Private Banking asked how the budget - about $12.5 billion short of breaking even this

year - could be balanced by 2017, as the government plans. “Will taxes have to be raised to cover shortfalls?” The Liberals have spending under control, Duguid responded, boasting that “we’ve got health care down now to (an annual budget increase of ) about two per cent.”

Wharf winning entry wMerchants’

rahul gupta

The results are in, and the name of a new waterfront street is Merchants’ Wharf. The “main street” for the emerging East Bayfront residential development located on the water’s edge and connecting to Queen’s Quay, Merchants’ Wharf was one of 700 suggestions for a naming contest organized by Waterfront Toronto. Submitted by Daniel Thompson, the name received nearly 40 per cent of some 2,200 votes cast during the online contest. The naming choice must still be approved by TorontoEast York Community Council. ‘Slow order’ between Vic Park, Kennedy If you’ve noticed slower than normal subway service on the surface tracks between Victoria Park and Kennedy stations of late, that’s because the TTC has imposed a “slow order” on trains passing through. The order, in place for safety considerations due to the poor state of the tracks,

w

TO in TRANSIT has meant a doubling of travel time in both directions as trains on either side of Victoria Park inevitably become backed up, says the TTC. The TTC is performing overnight maintenance and track replacement work following the end of service. It has also announced weekend subway closures between Kennedy and Victoria Park May 10 and 11 as well as 24 and 25, as well as for June. The slow order is expected to remain until the end of June. rentals available wZipcar

It is now possible to rent a Zipcar from some GO Train stations in the GTA. Beginning in May, six Zipcars will be available for members of the car share service to reserve at GO Transit stations including Eglinton, Scarborough and Mimico, the company said in a statement. Zipcar is one of sev-

eral carshares to gain prominence in the eyes of Metrolinx, which runs GO’s operations. Visit www. zipcar.ca/gotransit on bus maintenance facility wmeeting

The TTC wants to erect a 19-acre garage and maintenance facility to store 250 buses at the intersection of McNicoll Avenue and Kennedy Road, which it says will be needed within five years. Last week the TTC board heard a presentation on the project that has some residents worried about worse road congestion and an uptick in diesel emissions in the area caused by increased bus traffic. An open house on the project is scheduled for Wednesday, May 14 at Kennedy Public School, 20 Elmfield Cr., from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Contact TTC community liaison Lito Romano at lito.romano@ ttc.ca or 416-397-8699.

The Airplane Boys are Mannie Serranilla (Beck Motley on stage) and Jason Drakes (Gone Bon Voyage on stage). The Scarborough band recently opened for Snoop Dog on a tour that took them through England, Scotland, Japan, Korea and China.

Bringing the ‘Scarborough sound’ to the world The Airplane Boys set to release first album Egos & Expectations this month ALI RAZA scm@insidetoronto.com

A

Malvern hip-hop group is resonating their “Scarborough sound” all over the world. The Airplane Boys, a duo consisting of Mannie Serranilla, 25, and Jason Drakes, 24, is releasing their first album, Egos & Expectations later this month. Describing their music as a “Scarborough sound” the group decided to release their album after an extremely successful tour with acclaimed rapper Snoop Dogg. Between 2011 and 2013, APB was the opening act for Snoop Dogg’s shows in UK and Asia. And with performances at festivals like Coachella and Osheaga, the group’s rise to fame is on course.

After an explosive entrance in the Toronto music scene and with music videos gone viral, Snoop Dogg’s management contacted APB. Tours with Snoop Dog That interaction catapulted them into the spotlight. “What’s crazy is that me and Mannie used to record to Snoop beats,” Drakes said. “We grew up listening to his music and now we had the opportunity to perform with him.” Tours with Snoop Dogg took the group to the O2 Arena in London, as well as Glasgow and Liverpool. They also toured through East Asia, visiting Tokyo, Kyoto, Seoul, Beijing and Shanghai. Serranilla, stage name

This body of work represents Scarborough, where we’re from.

– Mannie Serranilla (Beck Motley)

Beck Motley, and Drakes, stage name Gone Bon Voyage, were born and raised in Scarborough. The two became friends at the age of 10 and since then have grown and collaborated in a musical odyssey that has culminated into APB. They say growing up in Scarborough has been their biggest influence when it comes to creating their music. “This body of work represents Scarborough, where we’re from,” Serranilla said. “A lot of these songs rep-

resent what we’ve learned. Sometimes it’s overwhelming for these kids in Scarborough to adjust to this world. To absorb all these things at once and you build an ego, you build expectations for yourself and you forget the clarity of what you’re growth is.” Beau Monde collective APB’s growth has been on the shoulders of a collective creative group called Beau Monde. It consists of Serranilla, Drakes and their lifelong friends and has evolved into a creative media group. “Beau Monde is our collective. It’s a collective of a creative class of Toronto,” Serranilla said. “We specialize in photography, directing, music, it’s a movement for everyone involved in

positivity and expressing themselves.” Beau Monde has directed and produced the group’s music videos and recorded their first album. The response from fans has been positive, as APB has received much support since their inception. APB credits friends and family for the support they’ve received. Inspiring “This music is for our parents, our friends, it’s not just our experiences, it’s a collective experience of the people we love,” Serranilla said. “It’s raw. There’s songs you’re gonna question arrangement, there’s songs you’re gonna question what are they going for in this sound. But it’s a Scarborough sound.”

Inspired by Outkast, Kanye West, Daft Punk, Michael Jackson and others, APB brings what they call an “inspiring, rebellious and globe-trotting sound.” APB will be performing for Canadian Music Week tonight at Tattoo (567 Queen St. W.) Their first album, Egos & Expectations, will be released later this month. A YouTube of the song Harvest features footage shot at Scarborough’s Pope John Paul II Catholic High School and the Markham Station restaurant at Markham Road and Sheppard Avenue, on a snowy day and night. Unique gifts for mom Whether she’s still hard at work raising children or her kids have grown up and now have children of their own, Mom deserves our best efforts come Mother’s Day. And while traditional gifts like flowers and chocolate might make for thoughtful Mother’s Day gifts, those who want to go the extra mile for Mom this year can consider the following unique gift ideas. • Concert tickets: Many adults recall the days of their youth when Mom would relax while listening to some of her favourite music on a lazy summer afternoon. Why not take a stroll down Memory Lane and take Mom to see one of her favourite acts in concert? Even if you have outgrown Mom’s musical tastes, she will still appreciate the chance to spend an evening out on the town with her kids and some good music. • Theater tickets: If Mom is a fan of live theater then nothing will

elicit a bigger smile than tickets to a Broadway show she has had her eyes on. If Broadway is a bit too far for your Mom to travel, do your homework and find a traveling production of a former Broadway show close to her. Such productions often feature many of the same actors who made the play famous on Broadway so you’re still bound to see an unforgettable show Mom will love. • Parts unknown: Moms who love to travel and experience other cultures would certainly appreciate a trip abroad or a domestic getaway to a region of the country they have yet to explore. Before booking any such trips, speak to your Mom and ask if there’s anywhere in particular she’d like to go. Such trips can be expensive, so adults might want to speak to their siblings and finance such an excursion together. • Spa treatment: If Mom is still

as active as ever, then a day of pampering at a nearby spa is sure to please. Many luxury spas offer packages, especially around Mother’s Day, that make a full-on spa treatment a more affordable gift. Men and women can even accompany Mom on her trip and reap the rewards of being such a thoughtful son or daughter.

A vast number of families travel to their favourite restaurants for Mother’s Day meals. Mother’s Day is one of the busiest holidays of the year for restaurants. With large crowds to be expected, diners can follow a few tips when treating Mom to a meal. • Expect to wait. Even with a reservation, you’re bound to spend some time waiting at the restaurant. Other families may be lingering at their tables, as no one wants to rush Mom out of the door. Plan accordingly for a potentially long wait time. This means having a snack before you leave. Don’t arrive famished, as no one wants the dining party to be hungry and cranky, which is not a good way to celebrate Mom. Have plenty of snacks and drinks on hand for young children, as well as activities to keep them entertained. • Consider dining out a day be-

fore or after. Restaurants are generally packed on Mother’s Day, and as a result kitchen and wait staffs might be overtaxed. What’s more, diners might be relegated to a special or abbreviated menu. If you want a more relaxed setting and the ability to order whatever you desire, it may be a better idea to celebrate Mother’s Day in advance. Then have Mom enjoy a relaxing day at home on her special day. • Take-out is an option. Families can treat Mom to a dinner out, without really having to go out. Many restaurants offer takeout service, so you will not be limited to pizza or Chinese. Even chain restaurants have curbside service, so if Mom is in the mood for a burger or something more elaborate, she’ll have that option.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum earns standing ovation Maria Tzavaras scm@insidetoronto.com A well-deserved standing ovation was given for the Scarborough Music Theatre’s phenomenal production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. This musical, with book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, is for everyone, or more specifically, for those who may not enjoy your typical musical. It begins funny and ends funny, and right from the opening number called Comedy Tonight, the cast explain that despite the story being set in ancient Rome, there will be no war or tragedy, just fun and laughter. And they deliver. The characters are all introduced (we don’t need a whole first act to get to know the story) and between the amazingly creative set, which is three abstract-looking houses on the street where the show is set, and the costumes, it’s a show that engages all the senses. The people who live in these houses are what the plot is about. The first is the home of Marcus Lycus (Jason Silzer), a place where courtesans are sold. Beside them

Musicals can run long, and people usually spring into song for no apparent reason, but this show is different. It has over-the-top, funny and caricature-like characters, and is a musical farce at its best. crazy schemes

The cast strikes a pose in the Scarborough Music Theatre’s production of, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.

lives Senex (Clive Lacey), his wife Domina (Jill McMillan), their son Hero (Iain Workman) and their slaves Hysterium (Trevor Cartlidge) and Pseudolus (Mark Tingle), the one that creates all the mayhem. third house In the third house, lives an old man named Erronius (Richard Grierson), whose twin babies were

stolen by pirates and he is ever on a quest to find them. Hero is smitten by one of the House of Lycus’s girls, Philia (Carina Cautillo), who has been sold to Captain Miles Gloriosus (Michael Winn Johnson). Pseudolus, who wants his freedom and makes a deal with Hero that he will get Philia in exchange for his freedom. Sounds like a good plan, but this is where the craziness begins.

This means crazy schemes, like the one to get Philia, goes awry and an unsuspecting patsy has to bear the brunt of those mishaps. In this show it’s mostly Hysterium, who has to cover everything up, pretend to be a dead girl and lie to pretty much everyone. Things especially become chaotic when Hero’s parents get entangled in the mess and the Captain comes to claim his bride, Philia, who is busy running and hiding all over the place as Pseudolus’s crazy plans comes undone. The musical numbers are fantastic, most notably the amazing company opener Comedy Tonight and The House of Marcus Lycus, where we meet all the courtesans and get to see some great choreography. Lovely is a beautiful duet showcasing the vocal talents of Workman as Hero and Cautillo as Philia. There is so much comedic talent

in this show, most notably Tingle as Pseudolus and Cartlidge as Hysterium. They are naturally funny and are true crowd-pleasers, along with Grierson as old man Erronius in his quest to find his children. The Proteans ( Jack Ly, Brian Mathias, Mike Scott) are a talented trio who play multiple roles. They are in almost every scene and they are the vein of comedy throughout the show. Silzer as Lycus, Lacey as Senex and Johnson as the Captain are also responsible for many of the laughs and give great performances, and McMillan is fantastic as the overbearing Domina. This show has every gag imaginable. It’s silly and entertaining and full of talented performers. The physicality of the actors, not to mention the choreography, makes this an energetic show that’s funny, fastpaced and engaging throughout. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum runs until May 17. Performances are May 8 to 10; May 15 and 16 at 8 p.m. and May 11 and 17 at 2 p.m. at the Scarborough Village Theatre, 3600 Kingston Rd.

Rocker Larry Gowan and the Duchess of York at the Scarborough World Gala: no other hospital fundraiser promises an evening like that. The Scarborough Hospital Foundation has the Duchess, Lady Sarah Ferguson, as the keynote for at its second annual high-end event this Saturday, May 10, CEO Michael Mazza said, thanks to Ferguson’s particular interest in cancer treatment. Foundation board member Melvin John simply asked a friend of the former wife of Prince Andrew - known in the 1980s as “Fergie” - if she could help, Mazza said this week. Through this event the Foundation is out to raise $2 million for the hospital’s cancer care program, and since cancer care is “close to her heart,” Mazza said, the

people who meet the duchess Saturday will find her approachable. Ferguson is touring the hospital Saturday morning and seeing some donors privately, he added. “She’s given us an incredible amount of time.” Also speaking at the World Gala - for which seats at the Sheraton Centre Toronto cost a minimum of $1,250 - is Janice Gowan, wife of the Juno-award-winning Scarborough singer, who came to the hospital for chemotherapy in 2012. Janice Gowan had high praise for the physicians and nurses who treated her at TSH, saying “she felt she was being treated like an individual,” Mazza said. Re c e i v i n g a l i f e t i m e achievement award will be Dr. Dhun Noria, TSH’s chief of laboratory medicine, who along with her husband recently handed the hospital the sort of large donation

Mazza said gives hospital confidence its community is prepared to support its needs and make it great. That the hospital faces an uncertain future - it declined in March to merge with its neighbour, the Rouge Valley Health System, and much has been said in recent months about its aging facilities - is something Mazza acknowledges too. But people shouldn’t question the foundation’s ability to marshal community support, he argued, because Scarborough residents are starting to find the “pride of place” that can drive donations. Larry Gowan, the Laura Lynn Band and Saara Chaudry, who played the young Cosette in the Mirvish production of Les Miserables, will each perform at the event.

There’s no need to fly to a faraway destination in search of beauty and tranquility. Ontario’s own Westwind Inn, just 90 minutes northeast of Toronto in Buckhorn near Peterborough, is the ideal close-to-home getaway for, weddings, family reunions, corporate retreats or couples looking for a relaxing atmosphere. Westwind sits on a sprawling 60 acres encompassed by Crown land and Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park. Innkeeper Inga Gallacher describes the family owned and operated resort as “reminiscent of a Rocky Mountain Lodge surrounded by tall pines at the water’s edge.” The cedar inn, open since 1986, features 35 rooms - 31 in the main lodge and four luxury suites in the nearby chalet. The decor is rustic yet modern with a log cabin feel. Guests are guaranteed a room with an incredible view whether it be overlooking beautifully maintained gardens or picturesque waterfront. Rooms are suitable for two but come with a sofa bed for additional guests. They each feature a spacious four piece ensuite bath, fireplace and private balcony. Six

Councillors end per-term salary review system DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Toronto Council has voted to end the once-per-term salary review and from now on only increase the salaries of its members by the consumer price index. The always-controversial practise has been in place since 2006, at the suggestion of then-city-councillor and budget chief David Soknacki, who was perturbed at the difference between what city councillors made and those in the surrounding regions took home. The policy required that in the final year of every term of office, the city engage a management consultant to look at compensation levels in comparable municipalities, and recommend a pay rate in the 75th percentile of the average pay. But because Toronto councillors are generally paid less

than those in neighbouring municipalities, the consultants have always recommended politically untenable pay increases. Toronto’s executive committee rejected one last month that would have increased councillors’ pay by 13 per cent. At council, no one spoke about resurrecting that pay hike. But Scarborough Centre Councillor Michael Thompson took matters a step further and suggested scrapping the whole program. Under Thompson’s plan, the only pay increase that councillors would receive is the annual consumer price index increase they receive now. “What’s the use of having a bylaw that is no good to anybody,” said Thompson, who pointed out that the recommended increases do nothing but generate “anger” at council and in the community.

The City of Toronto is hosting two public meetings for implementing the Eglinton Connects Planning Study in regards to the Eglinton Crosstown LRT. Over the last two years, the city conducted the study to determine the future land use planning framework and public realm plan for Eglinton Avenue, between Jane Street and Kennedy Road, to intensify, beautify and improve mobility along the street. Staff will now consult the public on specific implementation measures to make the plan a reality. The first meeting will be held Monday, May 12 at the Ontario Science Centre, 770 Don Mills Rd., from 6 to 9 p.m. The second meeting will be held Thursday, May 15 at Beth Sholom Synagogue, 1445 Eglinton Ave. W., from 6 to 9 p.m.
