Stirling students organize food drive

Literacy focus of Community Conversation

DRIVE TO THE BASKET

TARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com Small in years, but big in heart, 25 five-year-old Scarborough students recently collected food for people in their community with the help of their teacher. The senior kindergarten students from Alexander Stirling Public School are the school’s first French immersion class. Looking to celebrate their 100th day of school, the students accepted an idea from their teacher, Famina Nanji, to organize a food drive to collect 100 non-perishable food items for a local food bank. “Counting by 10 is a really important thing for them to learn, so I thought, to make it a really relevant way of doing so, why not collect 100 items for the local food bank, and that way we can count up to 100 and make groups of 10 of the food items,” Nanji said, noting the exercise also tied into the students’ character education training, which so far has seen them learn about fairness, kindness, caring and friendship. “I thought this would be a really neat way to involve the local community as well,” she added. “To give back to the local community and do something nice for other people, as well as working on the math concept.” To help collect the 100 food items, Nanji appealed to all of the school’s students, who jumped at the chance to support the drive. “The response was really nice, and it was pretty amazing,” she said. >>>STUDENTS, page 16

The group, which aims to improve literacy by giving parents the skills to teach their children to read, hopes to start a “dialogue” in the community about reading, and connect families to information and resources that can help them do it. Bowling event helps local seniors TARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com Enjoy some good old-fashioned bowling fun and help St. Paul’s L’Amoreaux Centre suppor t Scarborough’s seniors. Bowl for Seniors takes place from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, at Club 300 Bowl, 146 Old Kennedy Rd., just north of Steeles Avenue, in Markham. Registration is $15 per person, with forms available online from St. Paul’s website, www.splc. ca. Pledge forms are also available from the website for people who wish to support the event, but are unable to attend. Bowlers can collect

pledges as well, using a downloadable sponsor sheet. The fundraiser benefits St. Paul’s various programs. The centre helps seniors live independently, while improving their quality of life through various support, recreation and health programs, providing assistance in English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Greek and Tamil. Along with other non-profit groups, the centre has felt the pinch of the recent economic downturn. With more seniors requiring help from the centre, it needs more funding to reach everyone who needs assistance. Bowl for Seniors will also raise

money through a raffle and T-shirt sales. The event features two tournaments, one for teams and one for individuals, with the highest scoring individual and team earning a trophy. But the real prize, will be the support raised for Scarborough’s seniors, said Lydia Li, St. Paul’s volunteer co-ordinator and fundraising assistant. “It’s a chance for our board, staff and supporters to get to know one another. Best of all, bowling is always fun,” she said, adding, “No matter who gets the highest score, our seniors will be the winners.”

In Annushath Indrakanthan’s small bedroom, his shirts still hang in the closet above a backpack stuffed with the binder and textbooks he carried on his last day alive, July 20, 2009. Hung over a graduation photo nearby is a medallion of Vishnu he wore that day for protection. Behind the photo is his wallet, returned by the police after he was fatally beaten and stabbed in an Agincourt strip plaza. Under the bed covers are the jersey and the pajama pants Annushath, known as Annu, wore on his last night. His mother Ranji is here often, looking at them, touching them as if a part of her son is still on the bed. Annu was 19 when he died. Two young men were arrested and went on trial last year, charged with premeditated murder. On Jan. 25 of this year, a jury found Antriksh Singh and Theepan Thivviyananthan, both 22, not guilty. When Ranji was told the verdict, members of her family said this week, she fainted on the spot. “It’s like he died all over again,” one said in the Indrakanthan’s northeast Scarborough home. “The jury’s decision has devastated my family, my parents,” said Nevishath, Annu’s younger brother. “My family didn’t receive the closure that we need, and it’s been a struggle.” The dead youth’s relations know they can’t criticize the verdict, but they find it hard to accept. Annu had no criminal record, they say, and he wasn’t athletic, wasn’t interested in the politics of Canada or of Sri Lanka, where his parents are from. He stayed home nights and saved the money people gave him on his birthdays instead of spending it. “My brother was a very introverted person. He didn’t really like leaving the house. He preferred to be in the comfort of his home most of the time, and of his family,” said Nevishath, who spent time with his brother in the world of Runescape, an online role-playing game. Most of all, Annu enjoyed taking care of his brothers and his many younger cousins. He was the oldest, so he knew his behaviour set an example, said an aunt who didn’t want her name published. “He’s not the person to harm people,” she added. “If anyone had gotten to know him they would have

gotten to love him.” During the trial, Singh testified he thought Annu was connected to a Scarborough-based gang, the East Side Thugs, and that he had driven a car over Singh’s ankle earlier in 2009. The court heard Singh say he went in search of Annu to get him to confess, Annu, enrolled at West Hill Collegiate, was taking courses at Stephen Leacock Collegiate that summer to upgrade some marks. Nevishath said the family had never heard of the East Side Thugs or Singh before July 20, 2009, and that his brother “didn’t have a reason to be alert or aware” as he headed across the street from the school at around noon for a slice of pizza, Singh arrived at the Bonis Avenue plaza that day with four friends, including Thivviyananthan, who testified he stayed in the car. Singh admitted in court he hit Annu with a hammer, but said it was in self defence. He was convicted of aggravated assault, but cleared of the first-degree murder charge. Annu died of his wounds in hospital. Family members are adamant he was not involved with a gang, and say they want him to be remembered for who he was. They showed a visitor this week a framed assignment Annu wrote when he was 13 or 14 and attending Heritage Park Public School. Entitled “Where I want to be in 10 years,” it expressed a boy’s wishes to start his own business and be successful enough to afford houses, cars and take care of his parents and brothers.

Mayor Ford needs to be inclusive

ou’re not coming to my party! Not those exact words, but to some degree Mayor Rob Ford said as much to opposition councillors and their hopes of getting on his executive committee. Wednesday’s meeting of Toronto Council was ridiculous our view – debating for hours on what would be on the agenda, even Contrarian a long debate on whether they voice needed should have a debate on emergency shelter beds. at table However, it was when attention was turned to including downtown councillor Adam Vaughan on the mayor’s executive committee that things became very apparent: Mayor Ford has no intention of welcoming anyone with opposing views into his inner circle. “You want to put people on that are going to disrupt our committee – and I don’t think it’s right,” said Ford. “If you’re not going to support the agenda, you’re going to put a tax-and-spend lefty on there and I don’t want that.” Yes, the executive committee is tasked with moving along the mayor’s agenda – whether you like it or not, in some cases. Ford assured any councillor could give a speech before the executive, and suggest motions that may be moved by members. It is, after all, their task to focus the conversation before it comes to council where, whatever is decided, it comes down to a vote. In the end, what comes from the executive committee may or may not get voted in by council. Vaughan argued the committee needed some representation from Toronto’s downtown core. Very true. Especially when considering since the 2010 election not a single councillor from the Toronto-East York Community Council area has sat on Ford’s executive committee. The city’s wins and losses are shared by all its residents. Having a voice that speaks to the unique issues of every corner of the city, and all residents of the city is not a bad thing. Allowing someone from the left a voice at the executive table would not be the wrong move by the mayor. Choosing a left-of-centre councillor who can work constructively with Ford and his agenda is the key to having a contrarian voice at the table. We endorse the idea of having representation from all sides of the political spectrum, from every part of the city, on the executive committee; and we call for expanding the motion by rookie councillors Mary-Margaret McMahon and Jaye Robinson to set councillor term limits to also include sitting on any city committee. newsroom

nothing was taken. She had a big smile on her face as if she was also happy to know the purse she turned in had been returned to its owner. We hugged and I thanked her. She said how her parents always told her to do the right thing and never take what doesn’t belong to you. She went on to say how she teaches her own children those same lessons. I gave her $20 as a small gesture of my thanks and appreciation for her kindness. She wouldn’t take it. I had to open her hand and make her clutch it. We wished each other well and went our separate ways. Agostina is her name and she truly was my angel that day.

Sadly, the lack of resolve shown by the many administrations who have misdirected our taxes into special interest pet projects has created this problem. The answer seems to be to throw money at a problem whenever it is politically expedient to do so thus their creation of the Big Move. However, against the wishes of the many, the province unleashed their Big Move on to the streets of Scarborough and now they want us to pay for it. Our MPPs said they did not prefer this option either, yet here we are with our streets becoming transit corridors. If no one is listening to us, can we now claim there is no taxation without representation? So go to the meetings or go online and make yourself heard. We can try to make a difference if we all speak up.

‘Angel’ returned purse lost in food court To the editor: I lost my purse in a downtown Toronto food court recently and only discovered it was missing five hours later. I work close by and went down to have a coffee with a colleague, hung my purse on the back of the chair and walked away a half hour later, leaving my purse behind. It was when I went to pull out $5 for the office lottery pool that I realized my purse was missing. I knew right away where I left it and ran back to the food court. Of course it was gone, but the staff at the Tim Hortons directed me to security, which was way down the hall, up the escalator and around the front of some big office building. Sure enough, my purse was

To the editor: I would encourage every taxpayer in Scarborough to get involved with the citysponsored Feeling Congested campaign that is asking for public input on the future of transit in Toronto. We must speak up to make sure that special interest groups and lobbyists do not deflect the burden entirely on to the lowly citizen taxpayer. Let’s make sure that all those with interests in the city pay their full share. Torontonians have always been paying for transit. Not only with our property tax increases, but every time we use the transit system. It is now the turn of the 905 area residents who get to use our public facilities for free to step up and be counted. Currently, the only way this can be achieved is through provincial taxation and adequate funding for the TTC.

turned in. All I knew was a member of the cleaning staff found it. On my way back through the food court to return to my office, I saw one of the cleaners and asked him if he was the one that found it. He said it wasn’t him as he had just started his shift. A few days later I returned, in hopes of tracking down the right shift. I noticed at the far end of the food court, a short, petit woman wiping down a tray. I walked up to her and asked her if she was the kind person who found my purse. I had it with me so she would recognize it. She beamed and in her broken English said: ‘I didn’t take anything and took it straight to security’. I didn’t even need to look into my purse to know that

Community

Tuesday edition expands role in community >>>from page 1 “This really is just the launch of a series of changes you will see in the year ahead as we strive to be ever closer to community life,” said Proudfoot. Metroland Media Toronto editorin-chief Peter Haggert is also pleased with the change. “It’s our goal to provide a timely newspaper relevant to the community it serves,” he said. “These moves signify a com-

mitment to content and gives us the opportunity to do a number of special things through the year. “We want to be aggressive information leaders in Scarborough. We want to serve a growing role as a catalyst for action in the community that brings positive change,” he said. “It’s a mouthful, but for us, it’s part of being a community partner.” On March 5, you’ll see a redesigned newspaper, with a few more pages than your Friday edition, with

more colour and anchor features that you can follow on a weekly basis. Community life “We’ll be making a strong point to delve into the issues of community life in Scarborough on a regular basis,” said Scarborough Mirror managing editor Alan Shackleton . “You’ll see other features, like columns on transit and business – and

a sports calendar as well.” It’s been a progressive few months at The Mirror. The newspaper launched www. ScarboroughMirror.com under the parent www.insidetoronto.com website, designed a colourful new nameplate, and adopted Twitter and Facebook channels to extend its reach to Scarborough residents in the way they’d like to be reached for community news and information.

We’ve also added a wide range of marketing options, ranging from social media, video, blogging and website development. Please call Angela Carruthers at 416-774-2244 for more information. As always, please let us know what you think. You can reach Scarborough Mirror managing editor Alan Shackleton at 416-774-2257 or email ashackleton@ insidetoronto.com

Trampoline meet slated The Scarborough Gym Elites (SGE) host their annual trampoline provincial qualifier this weekend at Pope John Paul II Catholic High School. Approximately 350 athletes from across Ontario will be competing in hopes of qualifying. Open to the public, the competition will be held Saturday, and Sunday, and there will be a minor entry

fee. Raffle tables, vendors and more will be available for athletes and spectators. Olympians Jason Burnett, Rosannagh MacLennan and Karen Cockburn may make an appearance during the qualifier. This will be the sixth year Scarborough Gym Elites has hosted the provincial qualifier. Each year, SGE and its volunteers look forward to planning

this event for its athletes and the community. “It is certainly an experience,” Osborne said. “I think the most gratifying part that everyone sort of feels is that they are capable of coming together and, with a collection of volunteers, put on an amazing event. ” Scarborough Gym Elites is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1999.

>>>from page 1 “We were able to reach our goal, and double it, within about a week.” They collected more than 200 items, which she used to teach her students sorting and graphing as well. The five year olds were thrilled they were able to help out people in their community, showing empathy and generosity beyond their years, she said. “I asked them how does it feel,” Nanji said. “They’re like I feel really

thankful, and I feel really happy, and it’s really nice because we can help them survive, you know the people that we’re donating to, and maybe they don’t have enough money to buy the food, so we can help them and they can survive, and maybe it’ll give them more energy so that they can play.” As Alexander Stirling’s flagship French immersion class, the senior kindergarten students are a special addition to the school. “It’s really neat, the kids

seem so proud, they’re like, ‘Oh we’re in the French class.’ And the other kids in the hallway pass by and they say bonjour,” Nanji said. “It’s like they know that it’s like a really special thing to be a part of ... The parents are very thankful and appreciative that there is actually this program that is available to their kids, and they’re proud that their kids are part of that program.” Subsequent French immersion grades will be added at the school as the students progress.
