It’s behind a Toronto Community Housing Corporation building on Birchmount Road, barely a stone’s throw from a busy stretch of Eglinton Avenue. Yet there are abundant wildflowers and other plants nearby. For more than two months, the bees flourished, and filled their

boxes with honey, which tenant volunteers sampled last week. "The best honey. It can’t compare to store-bought," said Laura Hammond, residents council cochairperson, who led the effort and, in maintaining the hives,

learned much about honeybee behaviour. Before she knew how friendly bees were, she said, she was terrified. "I wouldn’t even get this close at the beginning." The city housing authority first tried beekeeping last year, in partnership with a company called Alveole, beside its highrises at Gordon Ridge Place in southwestern Scarborough. This summer, it expanded the Gordon Ridge hives and added new ones at Birchmount Eglinton and Cooper Mills, a group of TCHC townhouses in South Etobicoke. One girl in the Birchmount building is allergic to stings, and fear was the last thing the beekeepers wanted. Fortunately, TD Bank helped them fund a May event with a demonstration hive to prepare residents, Hammond said, "so everybody was aware of how to treat them." For tenant Crystal Lush, working with the bees brought back memories. As a child, she helped her mother manage a beehive, taking out some of the wounded bees, until she got stung in the face. Helping with hives again was bittersweet at first, she said, until she recognized the benefits - honey, bee pollen, beeswax - add up to huge potential. Now, Lush is comfortable with bees, "regrowing that love again." Alveole, which manages 160 hives across Greater Toronto is inviting its volunteers this Saturday, Sept. 16, to an open house at its midtown Toronto headquarters, where they will get more of the sweet stuff. For years now, Toronto has been a safe haven from

OBITUARY

7 | Scarborough Mirror | Thursday, September 14, 2017

Joy Taylor, 94, remembered as lifelong progressive MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Joy Taylor, an unflappable lifelong progressive who died on Sept. 1, wasn’t afraid to take on anyone, including Stephen Harper. In a YouTube video shot by Operation Maple when she was 88, the Scarborough woman steps into a Toronto boxing ring as Tiger Taylor and tells the former prime minister she’s coming for him. "I may be old, but I’ll take you on any day for the old people," Taylor tells the camera before pretending to knock Harper out. Born Joy Marie Courtney in Newfoundland, she never lost her sharp sense of humour - introduced to this reporter, she gave her name as "Marilyn Monroe" - or her commitment to social justice and helping people in need. People say Taylor, who was 94, wrote hundreds,

or of Rivergrove, Oregon. In politics, "Joy was absolutely my mentor, and I took my direction from her," Kibbey said. "Personally, I think Donald Trump kept her going for quite a while." Federal NDP Leader Tom Mulcair said Taylor "spent her entire life speaking out on behalf of those less fortunate and fighting for social change and a better world." Her presence in Scarborough, Mulcair said, "will be sorely missed by all who knew and respected her active work in support of social justice." Only once, in 2013, did Taylor break from her beloved NDP, at least the provincial party. During a nomination in Scarborough-Guildwood, Taylor, the riding secretary, became convinced some "walk-in" voters supporting former Toronto councillor Adam Giambrone as a candidate voted

possibly thousands, of letters to newspapers over her lifetime. She also wrote CEOs of large companies, trying to shame them for taking huge salaries. "She was young in spirit. She was like a 30-yearold," said Catherine Brandsma, a friend. Taylor wanted to be as charitable as her parents her father, who took her to hear Tommy Douglas speak, and her mother, who fed strangers during the Depression. While in hospital recently, Brandsma recalled, Taylor gave her a boiled egg saved from breakfast and insisted she eat it. "She would say it was the Newfoundlander in her." Taylor cared for her late husband, Ed, many years before he died. She is survived by two brothers, two children, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, said Heather Kibbey, her niece and may-

improperly. When the provincial NDP refused to allow a third-party investigation, Taylor quit. "I find it rather sad that a party I supported by volunteering and donations for 74 years has now branded me a crazy old woman," she said. Taylor, however, kept volunteering for NDP campaigns. "Even to the end, she was making cute little teddy bears with NDP outfits on them, to sell for the benefit of the party," Kibbey said. Viresh Raghubeer, a party member and friend, called Taylor’s compassion and kindness "unmatched", and said she showed love to all. "Often, she cried over the suffering of those facing struggles both locally and in faroff lands," said Raghubeer. All are welcome to celebrate Taylor’s life on Oct. 14 at Toronto Public Library’s Cedarbrae Branch from 6 to 8 p.m.

ABOUT US

Time to get engaged with election year coming up Doug Ford’s decision to choose a rematch for mayor, rather than a seat at Queen’s Park, will hopefully put both elections on the radar of Toronto voters. The provincial election is June 7; while municipal elections across the province, including Toronto’s, are set for Oct. 22. The outcome of both elections will help determine the future course of the city. Ford made it known at his announcement, at the 23rd annual Ford Fest held in the backyard of his mother’s Etobicoke home, that he would seek Toronto’s top job as mayor on familiar themes: the war on cars and stopping the gravy train at city hall. Those themes resonated for him in the last election where he finished a surprisingly close second to Mayor John Tory, and prior to that it successfully worked for his brother, Rob. It’s going to be hard to get even that far this time around. Doug Ford is facing an incumbent, always a harder task, especially when the incumbent is polling as well as Tory has. And for two, it will be tough to pin Tory down on Ford’s talking points. Tory hasn’t raised property taxes at a much greater rate than Toronto Council did under Rob Ford. He’s no enemy of motorists, either. While he’s supported bike lanes, he’s also supported the replacement of the car-friendly Gardiner Expressway. And Tory is, well... a Tory, a former leader of the Ontario Progressive Conservative party. By comparison, the late Rob Ford had it easy running against the legacy of a progressive mayor (David Miller) who wasn’t even up for re-election. In any event, spending money wisely, whether at city hall or Queen’s Park, is a job requirement of all candidates. More attention needs to be focused on more pressing issues, especially public housing and transit. Public housing is crumbling while the ambitious transit building we are in the midst of, including the Scarborough subway extension and Tory’s signature SmartTrack, is suffering from dubious and haphazard planning. Both municipal and provincial candidates need to be pressed to come up with both the money to fund these long-simmering big-ticket items, along with a rational plan to make sure that money is spent well. Doug Ford’s entry into the race stirred up his vaunted Ford Nation and hopefully it will energize all voters to get up to speed with the issues and with the candidates as they start to emerge over the next few months.

Keesmaat wrote the book on truth to power "You often say we should speak truth to power." That was Andy Byford, the unflappable CEO of the Toronto Transit Commission, to the TTC’s board meeting the day after Labour Day. He was answering questions from commissioner Glen De Baeremaeker, and gently explaining to the persistent city councillor that the TTC couldn’t let buses from Durham Region use the overcrowded Scarborough Centre bus platform without risking collision. De Baeremaeker wasn’t happy about that, and muttered that there was no power around the table at the commission that he could see. Both of them, bureaucrat and politician, had an

She was hired from the private sector in 2013, under the Rob Ford administration and in a bureaucratic environment that would make any public sector worker quake in their boots. Keesmaat didn’t seem to care about any of that. She took to Twitter with gusto, unapologetically advancing a progressive urbanist agenda. She told a Toronto and Region Board of Trade luncheon crowd that councillors were pretty hard to deal with sometimes. Surviving those councillors and Mayor Ford, she took

on the new mayor John Tory - or at least his Gardiner Expressway rebuilt - in another public address. She did finally help craft the Scarborough subway plan, but she made her opposition known publicly and then privately through the process. Although that didn’t win her universal affection, particularly among right-wing councillors, Keesmaat managed to leave the job almost entirely unscathed. Indeed, the most rampant speculation was that she might wish to run for office herself something that she’s so far denied any interest in. Probably just as well for her. In terms of influence and capacity - in terms of power - it would be a step down.

Good Foot delivers packages and opportunity Non-profit delivers hundreds of parcels a month by foot and public transit

RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Good Foot Delivery will pick up almost any package and drop it off promptly wherever you want in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area. There are some items Ryan Hollinrake will balk at, like for example, a recent request to transport a 20-foot pipe. "Clearly someone didn’t read what we do," said Hollinrake, Good Foot’s affable managing director, laughing. "We’ll deliver your package as long as it fits on the TTC." The social enterprise company and non-profit employs more than 30 couriers, plus a small office staff. Last year, Good Foot delivered a record 11,500 packages. In a slow month, it will still move more than 800 parcels. As the company’s name suggests, all orders are delivered by foot or public transit. "We’re not your typical courier company," Hollinrake said. Not only will Good Foot pick up your parcel and deliver it for a fee, it will sort mail, deposit cheques, deliver an ice cream cake fast enough to prevent it from melting. Forgot your keys at a friend’s house? A Good Foot courier will pick them up and drop them off. "We just had a customer who broke a pair of eyeglasses. We picked them up, took them in to get them fixed and then dropped them back off," Hollinrake said. The company also has blue-chip clients and sponsors. Beanfield Metroconnect one of its largest customers often ships 10 parcels a day via Good Foot.

Dan Pearce/Metroland

(Above) Anton Ritchie, (left) and Jon Gauthier, of Good Foot delivery service, head out to pick up a parcel.

CIBC and TD Bank also make use of the service, and recently Facebook. One aspect which separates the company from the rest of the industry: all of its couriers, dispatchers and trainers have some form of developmental disability, from autism to Down’s Syndrome. Not that it prevents them from doing their job; Hollinrake says he has to sometimes remind his couriers not to deliver the

packages too quickly. Some of the most productive couriers can deliver more than eight packages during a single seven-hour shift. Unlike a harried courier faced with delivering a truck full of parcels, Good Foot couriers endear themselves to their customers, adding a little personality to the job. The company was the brainchild of Kirsten Gauthier and her brother Jon, Good Foot’s first cou-

rier, launching in 2009. Gauthier is now chair of the company’s board of directors. Jon said the company started modestly with around three or four volunteer couriers. After hitting its fundraising goals the company was able to start paying its couriers and began to grow steadily. "Each year we doubled our revenue and our staff," Jon said. "It’s great to help people out and give them a

place to come to every day." Jon, who has a developmental disability, continues to train new employees and handles social media marketing. "We didn’t have a business plan or anything," he said. "We just presented a solution to a problem." Good Foot is not just a place of employment, it’s a community hub for the couriers who will hang out well past their shifts. There’s more room now

with the company having recently expanded its office space inside the Centre for Social Innovation. Good Foot operates under a zero-profit model, with 100 per cent of revenues going to its employees, and day-to-day operating costs covered through charity donations. It supplements revenues with donations and in-kind sponsorships, like hot lunches for staff provided by local eateries. Beyond the odd federal grant, it receives no government funding. Hollinrake, who has been with the company since December 2016, says it’s almost at a break-even point where it can pay its employees, as well as cover operating costs solely from revenue. "We want Good Foot to be self-sustaining eventually," he said. The company is steadily building up its donor base, attracting interest from Fortune 500 companies and people who just want to help. Mike Wilson, the Toronto Maple Leafs super fan and largest private collector of the hockey team’s memorabilia recently hosted a charity fundraiser, inviting Good Foot’s entire staff to his Forest Hill home to check out the vast collection. In one night, the company collected some $40,000 in donations. During donation pitches he says he’ll forgo the typical Powerpoint presentation, instead inviting some of the couriers to talk directly with well-heeled donors. 10 minutes is all they need to compel a donation. "Once you meet our staff, you just get it," he said.

14 POLITICS

Scarborough cabinet minister calls it quits MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com After 23 years in elected office, Brad Duguid is getting off the "crazy roller-coaster called politics" for a while. The Scarborough Centre MPP said he would serve until next spring’s provincial election, which he’s sure Premier Kathleen Wynne and her Liberals will win. And he expects to ride the Bloor-Danforth subway extension to Scarborough Town Centre one day, no matter what some people may want. "The Scarborough Subway is written in stone," Duguid, 55, said in an interview Friday. "All kinds of critics attack it, and it’s still there. This is a train that’s well down the track." Duguid, as Ontario’s minister of economic development and growth, is

its way to getting a brandnew state-of-the-art campus "in the foreseeable future." He got into a "very acrimonious battle" with the former Conservative government in Ottawa to ensure environmental integrity in the Rouge National Urban Park. Duguid refused to sign over the Rouge Park’s land in Scarborough until the new national park legislation was changed, which it was this year. The park is in better hands than it would have been, he said. At his age, however, the "runway" to doing something else with his remaining working life was narrowing, so he made the difficult decision not to seek re-election, he said. Though Wynne’s popularity is low, Duguid made it clear he’s not leaving because of polls or dissatisfaction with her leader-

one of the project’s strongest voices. Getting it finished will now be up to others, though. A mild heart attack last year put things into perspective, letting Duguid know "I’m not indestructible," though after losing 40 pounds on a new diet he’s fully recovered and "stronger than I’ve ever been." After seven cabinet portfolios, what Duguid said he’s enjoyed most is "being an unabashed champion for Scarborough." He still sees himself as the "scrappy kid" elected to the former city’s council in 1994. In 2003, he beat Marilyn Mushinski, a cabinet minister herself, to become his riding’s MPP. Since then, Duguid has supported a merger of Scarborough’s hospitals into Scarborough and Rouge, which he said is on

ste the same.

A comeback story is shaping up, he said, noting unemployment in the province is at a 16-year low. "I’m leaving at a very optimistic time." Wynne is the only lead-

er "focused on people who feel they’re falling behind," he said, which includes many in Scarborough. And Duguid, whose role is to bring "a business voice to the cabinet table",

insists even Wynne’s recent initiatives which are disliked by business groups, such as a $15-minimum wage, won’t harm Ontario’s competitiveness. Mayor Tory called Duguid a "great fighter for jobs here in Toronto and Ontario." Most importantly to this city, Brad joined me in championing the BloorDanforth subway extension further into Scarborough," the mayor said. "His efforts have helped us get on with building a transit network that finally delivers what Scarborough residents have been promised in several municipal, provincial, and federal elections." Friends also expressed their thanks. "I wouldn’t be in public office without your support," said Parthi Kandavel, a Scarborough school trustee.

Notice of Completion Lakeshore East Rail Corridor Expansion (Don River to Scarborough GO Station) – Transit Project Assessment Process The Project Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario, is upgrading its commuter rail system into Regional Express Rail. The Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) is now home to nearly 7 million people and heading towards 10 million by 2041. To address the urgent transit needs of the GTHA, the Province of Ontario committed to implement Regional Express Rail and make other improvements to the GO system. By 2025, electrified trains will be running every 15 minutes or better, all day and in both directions, within the most heavily travelled sections of the GO network. To support this service increase, Metrolinx has completed a Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) under Ontario Regulation 231/08: Transit Projects and Metrolinx Undertakings, made under the Environmental Assessment Act, to evaluate expanding and improving the Lakeshore East GO rail corridor between the Don River and Scarborough GO Station in the City of Toronto. The project involves: • • • • • •

MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Scarborough councillors have approved a ninestorey Kingston Road condominium despite opposition from neighbours who say they’re worried about flooding and lost lake views. The Goldberg Group applied two years ago to build at 3655 Kingston, at Muir Drive near the eastern end of Eglinton Avenue, where a coin-operated car wash has stood since 2007. "Community outrage" over the proposal led to formation of the Scarborough Village Community Association, which signed 1,062 residents to a petition against it, a spokesperson, Rob Burridge, told Scarborough Community Council on Sept. 6. At one time, residents installed lawn signs saying, "Stop the Highrise on Muir." Burridge, who lives in a

20-storey condo building across Kingston from the site, said many who signed the petition would lose their view of Lake Ontario. More frequently cited, however, by residents is that the south side of Kingston contains a city-designated "neighbourhood," where the Official Plan allows a maximum building height of four storeys. They also suggested the 99-unit building would cause traffic problems, endanger children walking to school and make basement flooding in the area worse. Janice Da Costa warned of "possible underground streams" south of Kingston, and said decisions on the building should be delayed until a groundwater study for the area can be done. Franco Agostinis, who lives nearby service road, advised councillors to forget about the proposal. "We just don’t want it," he said. Representing Goldberg, Janice Robinson, a planner,

argued the development "will upgrade Kingston Road" and said many purchasers are retirees from Scarborough. There are houses south of the lot, but it’s surrounded by roads, and the city’s transportation department has no concerns about the proposal, she said. The stretch of Kingston is also a designated "avenue," where special policies apply to encourage higher density. Scarborough councillors approved an Official Plan amendment to allow the building. Dino Lombardi, a planner from Scarborough, supported the proposal, saying he was "concerned about some of the vitriol coming from the residents." Lombardi said he and his wife are thinking of downsizing, and his son also wants to stay in the neighbourhood. "This is the type of development that allows him to do that."

Doug Ford looks to heaven for help in mayoral race DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Now we know what many of us long suspected: Doug Ford will in fact be running for mayor in 2018. He didn’t quite manage to win in 2014, coming in a fairly close second to Mayor John Tory. And while he flirted with provincial politics, helping Raymond Cho take Scarborough RougeRiver in 2016, that is not where his heart is. So the mayoralty it is. But during his Sept. 8 announcement at Ford Fest, at his mother Diane’s home in central Etobicoke, it became clear Doug isn’t running alone. He will be running alongside a ghost: the spirit of former Mayor Rob Ford, his little brother, who died in early 2016 battling cancer, is going to be right there with him, "grinning down from heaven," pushing the agenda forward. The spectre of Rob Ford was raised numerous times during the speeches at Ford Fest. Ward 1 councillor Vince Crisanti risked and finally lost his deputy mayor-

ANALYSIS alty, telling the crowd there that "Rob Ford is with us: he is everywhere tonight." Ward 7 councillor Giorgio Mammoliti, not to be outdone, pushed it over the top, telling the crowd, "I know Rob Ford wants one thing right now, I do talk to him every night, I pray like everybody else..." The canonization of Rob Ford began a long time ago, of course - really, in his political lifetime spent returning phone calls from beleaguered Torontonians and expounding an anti-government message on talk radio. It took off in earnest, after his passing in 2016, when his funeral took over city hall and shut down the city core. None other than Rob Ford’s daughter Stephanie, then 10 years old, planted the seed as she said, in her eulogy: "I know he’s in a better way now, and he’s the mayor of heaven now. I know that he will be with us forever. I love him so much."

Metroland file photo

Back in 2014, the late Rob Ford stood supporting his big brother Doug as he backed out of the provincial leadership race. Now, the elder Ford may be channeling his brother’s memory as he reaches for the Toronto mayoralty in 2018. The Mayor of Heaven. In the magical world of Ford Nation, it is a powerful notion. It is magic that Doug

Ford will need, if he hopes to persuade Toronto to give him the considerable power of the mayor’s office next year. Paula Fletcher, Toron-

to-Danforth councillor and one of those who has served alongside Rob Ford both when he was councillor and mayor, said there are worse

strategies than treating the former mayor’s memory with almost religious reverence. "I think it plays very well to Ford Nation," she said. "It’s Eva Peron: you’re there, (and then after death) you’re still there. Doug Ford needs Rob still there in order to have any chance in the election." Rob Ford was, after all, a nearly mythic figure in his life. He was an energetic public servant, making house calls to residents across the city. He was also epically flawed: he smoked crack, was a self-confessed alcoholic, and under the influence was abusive and offensive and often a hazard. But as Fletcher pointed out, "the common people really loved Rob Ford." And that love - that spectre of love - is Doug Ford’s best and perhaps only hope. It took him to second place in 2014. It may take all of that and more to pull him ahead in 2018. Because as Fletcher points out: "It doesn’t matter how many times Doug Ford invokes Rob Ford: he’s not him."

Future art centre gets a name Guild Park’s future arts centre will be named for the couple who owned it, Rosa and Spencer Clark, Scarborough councillors decided last week. The Clarks founded the Guild of All Arts, an art colony, in what is now Guildwood in 1932, later opening a hotel and restaurant, the Guild Inn. Years after closing it, the City of Toronto allowed a private operator to renovate and reopen the inn this year as an event centre, the Guild Inn Estate. The city also says Building 191, which the Clarks built nearby in 1963 for office space and storage, will be expanded and restored into an arts centre offering programs by

2020. Scarborough Community Council on Sept. 6 agreed to rename Building 191 the Clark Centre for the Arts, one of 154 names submitted last year. Reawakening the "sleeping building" is the next phase in reviving the Guild, said Scarborough East Councillor Paul Ainslie. Along with renovations to historic cabins at Guild Park, the art centre "will bring the entire park alive", he said in a statement. "The community and I have worked hard to bring this vision to a reality and I am very happy to see the progress and enthusiasm from everyone involved."

the top of the list: Infuse with natural light. Skylights bring in two times more daylight than a typical window, adding more sun beams right where you need them. Positioning one above the vanity will help you apply your make-up with a perfect touch, as natural light is the best lighting for this daily task. Improved health. Bathroom makeovers were the most desired project in Canada in 2016, according to a recent study. From luxurious double showers to deluxe power rooms, we’re spending an average of $8,000 to renovate this space. Upgrading fixtures, appliances and new tiling are core essentials for a deluxe bathroom, but how can you transform this space into your own home spa? The trend that most designers are moving towards is a skylight, a surprisingly affordable addition to any renovation project. Here are some reasons why skylights are looking very bright at

Better air flow. The combination of daylight and fresh air makes for a good indoor climate that’s essential for optimal health. A Velux programmable skylight allows you to let the steam out after a hot bath or shower to create a healthier living environment for you and your family, and decreases the chance of bathroom condensation. Affordable alternatives. If you’re on the fence about a skylight, another option for more natural light is a sun tunnel, which is really cost effective and unobtrusive. It takes four hours on average to install and requires no structural changes to the home. Find more information online at velux.ca.

The beginning of September is synonymous with three simple words: back to school. Equal parts excitement and dread fill the air. Marketing campaigns are abound; all vying for precious dollars saved up for supplies, clothes, shoes and the like. In the news, it’s no different. Education is making its rounds in the headlines. Premier Kathleen Wynne announced changes on the way to Ontario students’ report cards and curriculum, as well as possible changes to literacy testing. The Toronto public school board voted to suspend the student resource officer program. In Caledon, Ont. some Grade 9 students are even negotiating their end-of-term grades. Ontario Education Minister Mitzie Hunter also announced that the province’s school boards will begin to collect race-based data in everything from the

PRIYA RAMANUJAM Millennial Mind hiring of staff to student suspensions. This, in addition to following the lead of Toronto’s Oakwood Collegiate, and working toward a province-wide end to ’streaming’ students into academic or applied courses in Grade 9. Hunter spoke of the disproportionate number of students who are racialized, of special education needs or from low-income households who are streamed to applied courses. "The status quo is unacceptable," she said. I couldn’t agree more. And all the above changes

and plans are promising. What’s also promising when my niece, who started junior kindergarten this September, received a letter halfway through the summer, addressed to her her first piece of mail ever -- from her teachers for her family to read to her. The small, genuine gesture went a long way in getting her excited for school. Or, when I look on my Twitter timeline and see a viral video of New York based teacher Erica Buddington who remixed "Bodak Yellow", a hit single from uber popular rapper and reality TV star Cardi B, to help her 6th graders learn a geography lesson. These acts to meaningfully connect and get students engaged give me hope. Priya Ramanujam is a journalist, editor, and cofounder of Urbanology Magazine. She is a proud lifelong Scarborough resident. Activist ’rescues’ rabbits from reptile store Feeding live rabbits to pet snakes is immoral, man argues MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Animal activist Paul Bali walked into All Reptiles, a mid-Scarborough pet store, last month and told its owner he wouldn’t leave until she surrendered live rabbits to him. Bali said the visit and his demand were prompted by discovering All Reptiles sells live rabbits as "feeders" for pet snakes. The Toronto man considers feeding living rabbits or rats to snakes immoral, and to end "the mental pain of knowing this is going on," he had to do something, he said. "I promised I wasn’t going to leave until she gave

something to me," Bali recalled on Thursday. "I just said, ’I’m here on behalf of the rabbits.’" Though he declared he’d spend the night in the Kennedy Road store, Bali’s sit-in ended after owner Karen Truong convinced Bali she would get him live rabbits from a supplier. "He stationed himself here. He demanded to see live rabbits, which we don’t have here," she said. The Dorset Park-area store has frozen rabbits, rats and mice available, but on its website also advertises the same animals live. Bali came to confront Truong about this, though he doesn’t think selling frozen animals is humane, either. The activist, representing a group called Animals Unarmed, was at the store a month earlier and said he bought a rat there, "to get it out of harm’s way." After he returned, and

animals," Truong said. "I sell maybe - maybe - seven or eight live rabbits per year." The larger snakes are, the less they eat, and the largest the City of Toronto allows will eat a small rabbit, said Truong, who sometimes brings reptiles to local schools and answers students’ questions about them.

“I just said, ‘I’m here on behalf of the rabbits.’” - Paul Bali Because their instinct is to eat live prey, certain snakes need to be fed something warm and moving. They will ignore frozen food. though some can be conditioned to eat it, Truong said. "In the meantime, you can’t let them starve." When Bali picked up the

Bali says he’s morally opposed to selling live rabbits and rats as food for pet snakes. had a long conversation with Truong, she offered to donate two live rabbits to his group, and Bali picked

them up the following week. "It’s a reptile store. We sell animals that eat other

rabbits, both of a New Zealand breed raised for meat, on Aug. 23, he said he would foster them. "It was a confrontation initially. We left on good terms," said the Toronto man, who acknowledged people are replicating what happens in nature by feeding rabbits to snakes, and the rabbits would have met an unpleasant end if they stayed on the farm. "Snakes need to eat, I get that," he added, saying he bears no ill will against Truong, though he believes what her store does is immoral. Truong said Bali’s intentions aren’t bad. He obviously loves animals, she said. Bali, a friend of Anita Krajnc, acquitted in May for giving water to pigs on their way to a Burlington slaughterhouse in 2015, said he had also bought two rats from Big Al’s Aquarium, another pet store on Kennedy.

Historical designation for farmhouse Scarborough councillors have voted to protect an Agincourt farmhouse which was once home to the first Black Canadian to run for federal office. Built in 1888 and known as the HarrisWhite House, the oneand-a-half-storey structure at 33 Murray Ave. is already on the City of Toronto’s Heritage Register. Scarborough Community Council on Sept. 6 agreed the house should be designated under the Ontario Heritage Act, as the city’s preservation board recommends. Toronto Council must confirm the decision. Built by the Kennedy family, the house was part of the Village of Agincourt. John Harris farmed the property, subdivided around 1950, from 1912 until 1943. From 1951, the house with a veranda, T-shaped plan, steep gable roofs, and decorative brick patterning was owned by Vivian (Keeler) White and her husband Bill White, who died in 1981. Bill White, a grandson of Virginia slaves, ran for

View budget on webpage Toronto residents can now get a closer look at the police budget thanks to a new webpage. Police said the webpage (tps.on.ca/budget) would allow the budget to be more accessible so that it can be better understood. The webpage also invites community input. "We are showing the public how we build our budget and the key components," Toronto police’s chief administrative officer Tony Veneziano said in a news release

Tuesday. "We want to ensure that the budget is understood, clear up any misconceptions and also answer any questions." Veneziano also said police are committed to developing budgets that are "affordable and sustainable in the long term while working within the city’s fiscal pressures." The budget has a zero per cent increase for the second consecutive year, he said. A budget information session, hosted by the Toronto Police Services Board’s bud-

get committee, will be held at police headquarters’ secondfloor auditorium at 6 p.m. Sept. 19. The public event will be moderated by budget committee chair Councillor Shelley Carroll. The board’s budget committee will also hold a public meeting Oct. 5 at police headquarters to consider the draft 2018 police budget. The board will be presented with the budget committee’s recommendations for approval on Oct. 26.

Graduates of Centennial College’s HYPE, or Helping Youth Pursue Education, program are seen at the college’s Progress Campus in Scarborough after six weeks of tuition-free courses designed to prepare them for post-secondary education. About a third of HYPE graduates start college studies this fall.

Srimoloj Srianandan, valedictorian of Centennial College’s HYPEaɬ± Helping Youth Pursue Education - program for 2017, addresses the group at the college’s Progress Campus on August 10. Srimoloj Srianandan, a young man who lost his father at age 3, had witnessed civil war in his native Sri Lanka, and who got into trouble with the law when his family relocated to Toronto as a youth. "It’s great to stand in a room full of people who have your back," he told the class, who were accompanied by family and friends attending the

graduation ceremony at Progress Campus. "I listened to my brother, who told me to come here to Centennial to try a program. Now I work at Bombardier Aerospace." Srimoloj returned to Centennial over the summer to sample the college’s automotive training program through HYPE. The program serves to demystify college for those who may feel intimidated by higher education - often after having had a poor experience in high school. For Srimoloj, the Thursday guest speaker series motivated him to try new things despite the setbacks he’s had in his life. "Listen to those who form your inner circle of family and friends," Anthony Bertin, manager of Centennial’s Community Outreach Office, told the crowd, underscoring what Srimoloj had said about his brother. He praised the class for persevering to complete the program despite the distractions that summer brings. "Congratulations for finishing what you began!"

More than 100 young people committed a big part of their summer to participate in HYPE Helping Youth Pursue Education - Centennial College’s tuition-free learning experience that opens doors to higher education and fulfilling careers. Over six weeks the students, aged 17 to 29, took part in seven courses in business fundamentals, human development, automotive technology, esthetics, introduction to computers, digital media and culinary arts to get a sense of the career paths that may interest them. The initiative promotes education attainment by reducing the barriers to participation for youth living in underserved neighbourhoods, primarily in Toronto’s east end. In addition to attending classes at no cost, participants receive transit fare and meals during the day to ensure they’re fully fuelled to learn. The HYPE Class of 2017 came together last month to celebrate their achievement and to share some inspiring messages. The class valedictorian was

Our Mother of Perpetual Help Holy Spirit Thou make me see everything and show me the way to reach my ideal. You who give the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and who are in all instances of my life with me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank You for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be separated from You no matter how great the material desire may be. I want to be with You and my loved ones in Your perpetual glory. Amen. Person must pray this 3 consecutive days without stating one’s wish. After the 3rd day your wish will be granted no matter how difficult it may be. Promise to publish this as soon as your favour has been granted. M.L. Thank you to the Holy Spirit Thank you Holy Spirit for listening to my prayers and my prayers answered. ~L. J.
