Eat Pizza, Raise Dough For Local Food Pantry

P

articipants in this competition may want to bring a little Alka Seltzer along. The Spiaggia e Luna restaurant in Barnegat Township is sponsoring its first pizza-eating contest on Saturday, June 30, beginning at noon in the gazebo park, located behind the East Bay Avenue eatery. Entry fee is $15 per person. Proceeds benefit the nearby Barnegat Food Pantry. John Serpico, restaurant owner, said contestants will aim to be the fastest in chowing down a 16-inch pie, cut in eight slices. Whoever accomplishes the feat will walk off with $250 and a trophy. “When the contest ends will depend on how many people we can get signed up,” he said. “We’ll probably do it in groups of five.” Serpico said contestants are welcome to add their favorite toppings and, if they choose, can eat slices piled on top of each other. However, regurgitators will be eliminated. “We’d like to do this every year because we know the food pantry needs support,” he said. “This will be a fun way of doing it.” Jake Taylor, pantry co-director, said the facility serves approximately 70 families per month. “And with this economy, there’s always the likelihood we’ll get more people,” said Taylor. “Sometimes, summer is a tough time to get food donations because people are busy with a lot of things, but there are many people in need, so we have to keep the shelves well-stocked.” Taylor said major fundraisers during the year are the May collection drive by postal carriers and then a fall drive by area Boys Scouts. “We also want to thank the social clubs and service organizations who have given us support,” he said. To sign up for the contest, call the restaurant at 609-660-2200. —E.E.
