Expo boasts another banner year for pork By Andrew Sheeley Staff Writer andrew@thesalemnewsonline.com The pork boom at the 4-H/FFA Expo held yet again with another record set in hog sales. The 2016 total was 77 hogs at the auction. “It’s been another banner year, hogs are way up, sheep are holding steady, goats are growing slowly and steer is slightly down, but the quality is as good as ever,” said Ted Cunningham of Dent County’s MU Extension. “The hog show was definitely a big highlight. We had so many we decided to move up the auction an hour to 7 a.m. It ended up working out great because we finished in time and managed to avoid the heat.” The late July heat presented not just a discomfort, but a potential catastrophe which was avoided thanks to hard work and determination. The expo took place under the declaration of an excessive heat advisory from the National Weather Service. Meteorologists said the sultriness was due to the rare “heat dome” effect in which a sustained high pressure system impacts with the jet stream to sink moist air to the ground and drive temperatures exceptionally high. That factor, combined with the reality that swine don’t sweat, and that they’d been fattened up for sale, meant those showing hogs had to put their work in to take their pork to market.

Photo by Donald Dodd Cole Elliott’s ham was a 26.4-pound whopper bought by Junior Adams for $7 per pound. “We’re spraying them down with a lot of water and letting them have the leftover ice from our Sonic bag,” said Jennifer Smith while handling one of the many hoses onsite. “We’re working really hard to stop them from prematurely turning into bacon.” Smith had two children showing a duo of hogs this year, her son Tucker, a threeyear expo veteran, and daughter Kylie, a two-year vet. Retired FFA advisor Bob Parsons offered sage wisdom for many to keep their livestock cooled off. “Regular spraying and misting are important for hogs, particularly by a fan, but make sure not to have the fan in the pen with the hog to avoid any chance of electrocution,” Parsons said. “One of the most important things to remember is to help the animal avoid stress. The more stress you put it under, the bigger chance you have of it succumbing to heat stroke. That same logic also applies to us humans.” Although the hogs didn’t understand why they were at the Dent County Com-

Family owned and operated since 1986 Leta Hubbs Randy Hubbs Derrick Hubbs 801 S. Main St., Salem, MO 65560

mons, they did instinctually heed Parson’s advice and played their part in cooling off by splaying themselves out on the barn’s concrete floor and doing their best to not do much of anything. Many kudos were also expressed for Rusty Howard, whose selfless efforts kept many a pig cool and led him to be affectionately dubbed “The Hog Man” at the expo. Intercounty Electric was widely hailed for providing the many industrial fans which helped many animals and people avoid heat stroke. Outside of the hogs and heat, many other enduring moments took place at this year’s expo. The reigning Miss Salem, and longtime expo mainstay, Lyndsey Parker provided ribbons, awards and advice to the youthful faces looking to her for inspiration. “I’ve been coming to the expo since I was eight, so being able to give out the awards and see their smiling faces has meant a lot to me,” Parker said. “Many of the young girls kept telling me they thought I was a princess and wanted to know how they could be one too, I told them to work hard and study so one day they can compete in the Miss Salem Pageant too.” The event was best summed up by 4H Youth Program Associate Linda Shelton, who said, “All in all everything worked out because we worked together.” Shelton said in addition to the hogs, the other auction totals were: 19 steers, seven lambs, five goats and four chicken pens. No rabbits made weight this year so they weren’t featured. In spite of the heat, a total of only two steers and six hogs didn’t make weight. Shelton said the expo further garnered an all-time high in the sale of cured hams. “One of my favorite moments was Thursday, which was very hot, when the firefighters came out and opened up hoses for the kids to cool off and play in. It’s been an awesome experience and I’m already looking forward to next year.”

Livestock sale tops $185,000, shatters record By Donald Dodd Publisher Donald@thesalemnewsonline.com The 4-H/FFA Market Livestock Sale saw animals sell for $185,188.15 Saturday afternoon at The Dent County Commons, shattering the previous record sales. In 2014, $173,517.05 was brought in during the sale. “Despite the heat and a significant increase in hog numbers, we had another record-setting Expo and market sale, and the entire event went as smooth as ever,” said University Extension Livestock Specialist Ted Cunningham, one of the organizers of the event.” This year, 30 cured hams and bacon, three market chickens, five lambs, two goats, 77 hogs and 19 steers were sold.

Grant Case had the Champion Ham, Tyffany LuCerne the Champion Bacon, Isaac White Champion Chickens, Erica Rushing Champion Lamb, Kallen Garrison Champion Goat, Olivia Wisdom Champion Hog and Brett Fore Champion Steer. Hayden Wilson raised a hog to sell to benefit Russ Anderson, who has cancer, and the 225-pound hog sold for $22.50 a pound to Thomas Logging. “I continue to be amazed at the support our community shows for this event and the youth of Dent County,” Cunningham said. “It’s hard to point to one thing that makes our Expo so successful. Certainly a major factor is that our county has really deep agriculture roots and appreciates hard work, and recognizes that supporting our youth involved in agriculture ultimately strengthens our future.”
