Enjoy a free film every month

and learn more about mental health Mental Health Movie Monthly (MHMM) is a free publicfacing initiative in Garthdee, which uses film as a platform to stimulate discussions around mental health. Monthly showings have run consistently since it was founded in 2016 by two Lecturers in Mental Health Nursing from Robert Gordon University (RGU), Dan Warrender and Scott Macpherson.

MHMM has grown to reach many people through its film screenings, presentations and workshops, both locally and internationally. Garthdee residents, or people from further afield, may attend simply to enjoy a film, to discuss mental health as it relates to the film or to increase their knowledge and understanding of mental health issues. “Film is an accessible medium which is embedded in our culture, and it provides the rich seeds of discussion,” said Dan. “Mental health is often inappropriately seen as a taboo subject, and we hope that through our film showings and resulting discussions, we make it okay to have these conversations.”

Scott adds: “Our grand aim is that by encouraging people to talk about mental health, in a once-removed way, we increase the likelihood that people will speak openly about their own mental health.” Screenings take place on RGU’s campus and are always free for the public to attend. Refreshments and a welcoming environment are provided throughout, along with a facilitated discussion around mental health. There is no ‘expert panel’. Instead, everyone who attends is considered an expert on their own experience and are given an equal platform should they choose to use it. Films of any genre, age rating and style are shown to cater to a range of interests. Past screenings have included Frozen, Rambo, Split, It’s a Wonderful Life and also Pinocchio. MHMM’s mission is “to provide free monthly film showings, allowing an inclusive safe space where people can discuss mental health and human experience as equals”. You can keep up-to-date with future showings through MHMM’s Facebook page: RGU Mental Health Movie Monthly.

The next free showing is ‘Elf’ (PG) on Monday 9 December The film will be shown from 5pm to 8.30pm in room N117 of the Sir Ian Wood Building on RGU’s Garthdee Campus.
